The Digital Platforms Handbook: How to transform any business into a digital platform and thrive in the digital age by Dario Maisto 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

Companies invest massive amounts of money in their digital transformations but then struggle to keep the pace with native digital businesses. In this book we analyze what traditional companies can learn from the success stories of digital companies like Amazon, Google, Facebook, Uber, Airbnb and others that were able to create platform business models around their product and service offerings. Building a digital platform ecosystem in fact means much more than developing an application for smartphones: it is really about reinventing a new platform-based business model leveraging products and services offered by the company as well as the possibilities enabled by the digital revolution. This is a practical book, not an additional book on how things should work, but rather the first book on how things have to work when trying to create a platform business model for companies operating in sectors like manufacturing, insurance, banking, pharma, healthcare and retail. If you are a manager in sales, marketing, innovation, strategy or business development, a student or a consultant, you will find this book full of practical tips for your digital strategy and you will be able to learn from the best examples in the digital platforms' environment. You will be immediately able to use the knowledge acquired in your internal meetings, job interviews and clients' engagements. This book does not require any special prerequisites as topics that are specific to the digital platforms' environment are carefully explained to enable everyone to have a seamless and frictionless reading experience.

11 Powerful Strategies GREAT MANAGERS Use to Create Impact: How Great Managers Can Create a Winning Team by Robinson Reyes 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

There are many strategies a manager can use to manage a team properly. Some of these strategies tend to be on the more human side while others are on the more professional. A balance needs to be applied if we want to create the most significant impact in our departments and companies. Throughout the years, I have had a few great managers and others, not so great. I have had the chance to be a manager myself, and throughout this book, I want to present 11 techniques great managers use to make the most significant impact within their team. But this book should not only be read by managers. It should also be read by all employees who have no direct reports so that they have something at hand they can use to make their teams better. Change starts at any level of the organization. Gandhi famously said the following quote. "We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our bodies. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do." - Mahatma Gandhi Any employee can bring new ideas to the table, meaning that anyone could go through this book and propose some, if not all, of them to their managers.

Schaum's Outline : Microeconomics Fourth Edition by Dominick Salvatore 3.8 Stars (27 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Microeconomic theory presents, in a systematic way, some of the basic analytical techniques or "tools of analysis" of economics. As such, it has traditionally been one of the most important courses in all economics and business curricula and is a requirement in practically all colleges and universities. Being highly abstract in nature, microeconomic theory is also one of the most difficult courses and often becomes a stumbling block for many students. The purpose of this book is to help overcome this difficulty by approaching microeconomic theory from a learn-by-doing methodology. While the book is primarily intended as a supplement to all current standard textbooks in microeconomic theory, the statements of theory and principles are sufficiently complete to enable its use for independent study as well. Each chapter begins with a clear statement of theory, principles, or background information, fully illustrated with examples. This is followed by a set of multiple-choice review questions with answers. Subsequently, numerous theoretical and numerical problems are presented with their detailed, step-by-step solutions. These solved problems serve to illustrate and amplify the theory, to bring into sharp focus those fine points without which the student continually feels on unsafe ground, and to provide the applications and the reinforcement so vital to effective learning. The topics are arranged in the order in which they are usually covered in intermediate microeconomic theory courses and texts. As far as content, this book contains more material than is covered in one-semester courses in undergraduate microeconomic theory. Thus, while directed primarily at undergraduates, it can also provide a useful source of reference for M.A. students, M.B.A. students and businesspeople. There is no prerequisite for its study other than a prior course in or some knowledge of elementary economics. The methodology of this book and much of its content have been tested in ...

Soviet Union in World War 2: A Captivating Guide to Life in the Soviet Union and Some of the Main Events on the Eastern Front Such as the Battle of ... by Captivating History 5.0 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified 56 minutes ago

If you want to learn about the Soviet Union and Eastern Front during World War 2, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! No nation suffered more losses during the Second World War than the Soviet Union. The figure most historians recognize as roughly accurate is twenty million. The exact figure is impossible to tally for a number of reasons: destroyed records, inexact pre-war records, Soviet politicization of the population figures before and after the war, and much more. No matter what the exact total was, what is known is that the Soviet population only recovered its losses from the war in the late 1950s. For those of you unfamiliar with WWII, the combined losses sustained by the United States and Great Britain were just over 800,000 dead. The Soviets lost that many people during the Siege of Leningrad alone. In Soviet Union in World War 2: A Captivating Guide to Life in the Soviet Union and Some of the Main Events on the Eastern Front Such as the Battle of Stalingrad, Battle of Kursk, and Siege of Leningrad, you will discover topics such as • Before the War • Stalinism • 1938 and 1939 • Interlude • Barbarossa • War of Extermination • The Major Battles • And much, much more! 101 Games To Play Whilst Socially Distancing: For Children Aged 3-7 by Martin Williams (Early Impact) 4.4 Stars (197 Reviews)    Price verified 17 hours ago

During this global pandemic there are many unknowns for teachers. However, one thing is clear - social distancing, at least in some form, is here to stay for the foreseeable future. Attempting social distancing with young children raises many questions: how is it possible? How can we incorporate it into games and activities? How do we help and support children with this lack of human connection? These are the questions that this book answers. Written by an early years expert and consultant, '101 Games To Play Whilst Socially Distancing' provides a simple, and step-by-step description of games covering the entire curriculum that take place within the context of social distancing. Resources have been stripped back, to leave a collection of activities where storytelling, role-play, drama, song, and movement come to the fore. Wellbeing is at the heart of this book. Children's mental health will have been tested recently in ways never experienced by earlier generations, and wellbeing and happiness are central to all the games. This book teaches: ? A wide range of outdoor games, and all the activities can be played in the outdoor environment if required ? Many games that develop memory and listening skills ? Multiple maths games, that develop skills in number, shape and calculating ? A wide selection of early phonics and literacy games ? Activities ideal for Kindergarten, Reception, Preschool, Key Stage 1, Pre-K, Nursery - all children between the ages of 3-7 ? Inspiration that is ideal for teachers, junior sports coaches, preschool workers, childminders - anyone that works with young children ? Higher Education Reforms in Romania: Between the Bologna Process and National Challenges by Adrian Curaj (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

Romania is an active player in various international higher education areas, while undergoing a series of higher education reforms within its national framework. The Higher Education Evidence Based Policy Making: a necessary premise for progress in Romania project was implemented by the Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Funding (UEFISCDI) in the timeframe February 2012 - February 2014, being co-financed by the European Social Fund through the Operational Programme "Administrative Capacity Development". The project aimed to increase the capacity of public administration for evidence-based policy making in the field of higher education, while focusing on good practices at international level and impact assessment. With the contribution of the national and international experts, the project has generated a number of analysis and studies on the existing higher education public policies (quality assurance, internationalisation, equity, data collection, the Bologna Process, financing of higher education). Based on the results of the project, the book will reunite a number of policy research articles which would tap into the innovative aspects of the project's activities and provide a concise overview of what good practices can be drawn from the empirical research conducted in this project. The book will therefore aim to improve the information on Romanian higher education reforms, as well as on the concrete evidence-based policy proposals which could be transformed into future policy solutions in the Romanian higher education system.

Mergers and Alliances in Higher Education: International Practice and Emerging Opportunities by Adrian Curaj (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

This volume casts light on mergers and alliances in higher education by examining developments of this type in different countries. It combines the direct experiences of those at the heart of such transformations, university leaders and senior officials responsible for higher education policy, with expert analysts of the systems concerned. Higher education in Europe faces a series of major challenges. The economic crisis has accelerated expectations of an increased role in addressing economic and societal challenges while at the same time putting pressure on available finances. Broader trends such as shifting student demographics and expectations, globalisation and mobility and new ways of working with business have contributed to these increased pressures. In the light of these trends there have been moves, both from national or regional agencies and from individual institutions to respond by combining resources, either through collaborative arrangements or more fundamentally through mergers between two or more universities. After an introductory chapter by the editors which establishes the context for mergers and alliances, the book falls into two main parts. Part 1 takes a national or regional perspective to give some sense of the historical context, the wider drivers and the importance of these developments in these cases. Included are both systemic accounts (for countries as France, Sweden, Romania, Russia, Wales and England), and specific cross-cutting in itiatives including a major facility at Magurele in Romania and a Spanish programme for promoting international campuses of excellence. Part 2 is built from specific cases of universities, either in mergers or alliances, with examples from different countries (such as France, UK, Romania, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Switzerland). A concluding chapter by the editors assesses these experiences and indicates the implications and future needs for understanding in this domain.

Environmental Education in Indonesia: Creating Responsible Citizens in the Global South? (Routledge Explorations in Environmental Studies) by Lyn Parker 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

Indonesia's wealth of natural resources is being exploited at breakneck speed, and environmental awareness and knowledge among the populace is limited. This book examines how young people learn about the environment to see how education can help to develop environmental awareness and avert vast environmental destruction, not only in Indonesia, but also in the Global South more generally. Based on in-depth studies conducted in the cities of Yogyakarta and Surabaya, complemented with surveys of students in secondary schools, Environmental Education in Indonesia examines educational curricula, pedagogy and "green" activities to reveal what is currently being done in schools to educate children about the environment. The book investigates the shortcomings in environment education, including underqualified teachers, the civil service mentality, the still-pervasive chalk-and-talk pedagogy and the effect of the examination system. It also analyses the role of local government in supporting (or not) environmental education, and the contribution of environmental NGOs. The book establishes that young people are not currently being exposed to effective environmental education, and the authors propose that the best and most culturally appropriate way forward in Indonesia is to frame pro-environment behaviour and responsibility as a form of citizenship, and specifically that environmental education should be taught as a separate subject. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of contemporary Indonesia and Southeast Asia, education for sustainability and environmental education, as well as sustainability and sustainable development more generally. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.tandfebooks.com/doi/view/10.4324/9780429397981, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.

What Did You Ask At School Today : A Handbook Of Child Learning Book 1 by Kamala V. Mukunda (Collins India) 4.6 Stars (32 Reviews)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

'This is a beautiful work, extremely well written, almost an encyclopaedia for those interested in children's education.' - Dr Yash Pal, National Research Professor This insightful and well-researched book is for teachers and educators, as well as anyone interacting closely with children. Applying frontline research in child psychology, the author calls for a dramatic change in approach towards school teaching. The skill of being able to ask the 'right questions' is far more important than giving the right answers, says Mukunda, and urges teachers to adopt good teaching practices and an open mind towards the learning process of a child. Using a step-by-step approach, and giving varied examples from school situations around the world, the book unravels interesting questions on learning, memory, intelligence, child development and emotional health. This is an enlightening read for parents, social workers, psychologists and counsellors.

Nature Guiding by William Gould Vinal (Comstock Publishing Associates) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

Nature Guiding is the science of inculcating nature enthusiasm, nature principles, and nature facts into the spirit of individuals. "Doing" nature-study means observing, wondering, and solving problems. It could include collecting, building, measuring, painting, planning, writing, touching, experimenting or any of a wide range of other activities. Most importantly, it allows children to be "original investigators." This book is intended as a resource for teachers and students engaged in nature study at summer camps and in schools. William Gould Vinal believed that the teacher of nature study should be "in sympathy with the simple life and the country way," that the nature study should emphasize observation of the interactions of plants and animals in their environment, and not be reduced to matters of taxonomy and anatomy. In Nature Guiding, he offers advice to camp counselors and school teachers on incorporating nature study into everyday activities, as well as suggestions for parents and others about using visits to state and national parks to teach nature lore.

Lead to Leadership: The Essence of Positive Leadership by Chris Peterson 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

Do you want to be a leader instead of a manager? Is it your goal to have a positive impact on the world? Are you looking to improve your leadership skills to inspire your team? Leadership is the glue that unites the world. Great leaders make an impact on the world, especially positive leaders like Mandela, Gandi, or John F. Kennedy. We need leaders in our societies, in companies, organizations, family, and even groups of friends to bring people together towards better outcomes. Positive leadership distinguishes successful organizations from the rest. It provides you with the power to unite people around a vision, a vision they will fight for as if it were their own. Inspired and motivated team members are a hundred times more effective than employees driven by money and personal interests. While the first will make the extra mile for the success of the organization, the second will only consider the relationship between their effort and their reward, disregarding the group. "Lead to Leadership" series will teach how to become a great leader, to embrace leadership as a lifestyle, and use it to empower others and improve their lives. You will become a leader at work, with your family and group in your group of friends and you will have the answers to lead them to success. For many years, I have studied and practiced leadership. As an entrepreneur, I understood pretty early that the success of my business would be directly correlated with my leadership skills. After a lot of work and lots of mistakes, I know what works and what does not in terms of leadership approaches, what is important to be a great leader, and how to inspire and motivate my team members. Furthermore, I learned first hand how can you find and develop new leaders in your teams, leaders that will help you spread your vision further than you could ever expect on your own. Positive leadership, with honesty empathy, and initiative, can change the world and make it a better place. I'm glad to ...

The Cold War in the Classroom: International Perspectives on Textbooks and Memory Practices (Palgrave Studies in Educational Media) by Barbara Christophe (Palgrave Macmillan) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book explores how the socially disputed period of the Cold War is remembered in today's history classroom. Applying a diverse set of methodological strategies, the authors map the dividing lines in and between memory cultures across the globe, paying special attention to the impact the crisis-driven age of our present has on images of the past. Authors analysing educational media point to ambivalence, vagueness and contradictions in textbook narratives understood to be echoes of societal and academic controversies. Others focus on teachers and the history classroom, showing how unresolved political issues create tensions in history education. They render visible how teachers struggle to handle these challenges by pretending that what they do is 'just history'. The contributions to this book unveil how teachers, backgrounding the political inherent in all memory practices, often nourish the illusion that the history in which they are engaged is all about addressing the past with a reflexive and disciplined approach.

Empowering Teachers to Build a Better World: How Six Nations Support Teachers for 21st Century Education (SpringerBriefs in Education) by Fernando M. Reimers (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

This open access book presents a comparative study on how large-scale professional development programs for teachers are designed and implemented. Around the world, governments and educators are recognizing the need to educate students in a broad range of higher order cognitive skills and socio-emotional competencies, and providing effective opportunities for teachers to develop the expertise needed to teach these skills is a crucial aspect of effective implementation of curricula which include those goals. This study examines how large-scale efforts to empower teachers for deeper instruction have been designed, how they have been implemented, and their outcomes. To do so, it investigates six programs from England, Colombia, Mexico, India, and the United States. Though all six are intended to broaden and deepen students' curricular aspirations, each takes this expansion of curricular goals in a different direction. The ambitious education reforms studied here explicitly focus on building teachers' capacity to teach on a broader set of goals. Through a discerning analysis of program documents, evaluations, and interviews with senior leaders and participants in the programs, the book identifies the various theories of action used in these programs, examines how they were implemented, and discusses what they achieved. As such, it offers an indispensable resource for education leaders interested in designing and implementing professional development programs for teachers that are aligned with ambitious instructional goals.

Socioeconomic Inequality and Educational Outcomes: Evidence from Twenty Years of TIMSS (IEA Research for Education Book 5) by Markus Broer (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

This open access book focuses on trends in educational inequality using twenty years of grade 8 student data collected from 13 education systems by the IEA's Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) between 1995 and 2015. While the overall positive association between family socioeconomic status (SES) and student achievement is well documented in the literature, the magnitude of this relationship is contingent on social contexts and is expected to vary by education system. Research on how such associations differ across societies and how the strength of these relationships has changed over time is limited. This study, therefore, addresses an important research and policy question by examining changes in the inequality of educational outcomes due to SES over this 20-year period, and also examines the extent to which the performance of students from disadvantaged backgrounds has improved over time in each education system. Education systems generally aim to narrow the achievement gap between low- and high-SES students and to improve the performance of disadvantaged students. However, the lack of quantifiable and comprehensible measures makes it difficult to assess and monitor the effect of such efforts. In this study, a novel measure of SES that is consistent across all TIMSS cycles allows students to be categorized into different socioeconomic groups. This measure of SES may also contribute to future research using TIMSS trend data. Readers will gain new insight into how educational inequality has changed in the education systems studied and how such change may relate to the more complex picture of macroeconomic changes in those societies.

Teaching Tolerance in a Globalized World (IEA Research for Education Book 4) by Andrés Sandoval-Hernández (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

This open access thematic report identifies factors and conditions that can help schools and education systems promote tolerance in a globalized world. The IEA's International Civic and Citizenship Study (ICCS) is a comparative research program designed to investigate the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens, and provides a wealth of data permitting not only comparison between countries but also comparisons between schools within countries, and students within countries. Advanced analytical methods provide insights into relationships between students' attitudes towards cultural diversity and the characteristics of the students themselves, their families, their teachers and school principals. The rich diversity of educational and cultural contexts in the 38 countries who participated in ICCS 2009 are also acknowledged and addressed. Readers interested in civic education and adolescents' attitudes towards cultural diversity will find the theoretical perspectives explored engaging. For readers interested in methodology, the advanced analytical methods employed present textbook examples of how to address cross-cultural comparability of measurement instruments and multilevel data structures in international large-scale assessments (ILSA). Meanwhile, those interested in educational policy should find the identification and comparison of malleable factors across education systems that contribute to positive student attitudes towards cultural diversity a useful and thought-provoking resource.

Handbook of Education Policy Studies: School/University, Curriculum, and Assessment, Volume 2 by Guorui Fan (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

This open access handbook brings together the latest research from a wide range of internationally influential scholars to analyze educational policy research from international, historical and interdisciplinary perspectives. By effectively breaking through the boundaries between countries and disciplines, it presents new theories, techniques and methods for contemporary education policy, and illustrates the educational policies and educational reform practices that various countries have introduced to meet the challenges of continuous change. This volume focuses on policies and changes in schools and classrooms. The studies on school changes present the differences in the policies and challenges of K-12 schools and universities in different countries and regions, and in connection with the contradictions and conflicts between tradition and modernization, as well as the changing roles of various stakeholders, especially that of teachers. In terms of curriculum and instruction, many countries have undertaken experiments and introduced changes based on two major themes: "what to teach" and "how to teach". International education assessments represented by PISA not only promote the improvement and extensive application of educational assessment and testing techniques, but have also had far-reaching impacts on education policies and education reforms in many countries. Focusing on the changes in educational policies at the micro level, this volume comprehensively reveals the complex interactions between school organizations, teachers, curricula, teaching and learning, evaluation and other elements within the education system, as well as the latest related reforms worldwide.

Student Misconceptions and Errors in Physics and Mathematics: Exploring Data from TIMSS and TIMSS Advanced (IEA Research for Education Book 9) by Teresa Neidorf (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

This open access report explores the nature and extent of students' misconceptions and misunderstandings related to core concepts in physics and mathematics and physics across grades four, eight and 12. Twenty years of data from the IEA's Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and TIMSS Advanced assessments are analyzed, specifically for five countries (Italy, Norway, Russian Federation, Slovenia, and the United States) who participated in all or almost all TIMSS and TIMSS Advanced assessments between 1995 and 2015. The report focuses on students' understandings related to gravitational force in physics and linear equations in mathematics. It identifies some specific misconceptions, errors, and misunderstandings demonstrated by the TIMSS Advanced grade 12 students for these core concepts, and shows how these can be traced back to poor foundational development of these concepts in earlier grades. Patterns in misconceptions and misunderstandings are reported by grade, country, and gender. In addition, specific misconceptions and misunderstandings are tracked over time, using trend items administered in multiple assessment cycles. The study and associated methodology may enable education systems to help identify specific needs in the curriculum, improve inform instruction across grades and also raise possibilities for future TIMSS assessment design and reporting that may provide more diagnostic outcomes.

Preparing for Life in a Digital Age: The IEA International Computer and Information Literacy Study International Report by Julian Fraillon (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Ability to use information and communication technologies (ICT) is an imperative for effective participation in today's digital age. Schools worldwide are responding to the need to provide young people with that ability. But how effective are they in this regard? The IEA International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) responded to this question by studying the extent to which young people have developed computer and information literacy (CIL), which is defined as the ability to use computers to investigate, create and communicate with others at home, school, the workplace and in society. The study was conducted under the auspices of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) and builds on a series of earlier IEA studies focusing on ICT in education. Data were gathered from almost 60,000 Grade 8 students in more than 3,300 schools from 21 education systems. This information was augmented by data from almost 35,000 teachers in those schools and by contextual data collected from school ICT-coordinators, school principals and the ICILS national research centers. The IEA ICILS team systematically investigated differences among the participating countries in students' CIL outcomes, how participating countries were providing CIL-related education and how confident teachers were in using ICT in their pedagogical practice. The team also explored differences within and across countries with respect to relationships between CIL education outcomes and student characteristics and school contexts. In general, the study findings presented in this international report challenge the notion of young people as "digital natives" with a self-developed capacity to use digital technology. The large variations in CIL proficiency within and across the ICILS countries suggest it is naive to expect young people to develop CIL in the absence of coherent learning programs. Findings also indicate that system- and school-level planning ...

Early Childhood Policies and Systems in Eight Countries: Findings from IEA's Early Childhood Education Study by Tony Bertram (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

This report provides an overview of policy strategies on early childhood education settings (from birth to primary schooling) in eight countries. Data were collected using a policy questionnaire addressed to and completed by the National Research Coordinator(s) (NRC) of Chile, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Italy, Poland, the Russian Federation and the United States. The countries that participated provide interesting illustrations of early childhood education policy in action in a range of diverse contexts. Analysis of the systemic and structural results of ECE policy at national and, where necessary, subnational levels, enables transnational comparisons in policy and systems. Key policy changes, both underway and planned, are documented. These data reveal key findings in each of the five policy areas as covered in the questionnaire and this report: public policy; delivery models and providers; participation and enrollment; quality assurance systems; and expectations for child outcomes. In particular, the study aims to provide meaningful information for countries, states and jurisdictions across the world in relation to early childhood education, mapping the systems, structures and user pathways in place, along with the perceptions of stakeholders about the system, its functioning and impact. This comprehensive assessment of the wider policy contexts and settings for early childhood education includes teacher/practitioner qualifications, pedagogy approaches, and opportunities for professional development. Such information will enable countries to review their early childhood education systems in an international context.

Global Perspectives on Recognising Non-formal and Informal Learning: Why Recognition Matters (Technical and Vocational Education and Training: ... by Madhu Singh (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 56 minutes ago

This book deals with the relevance of recognition and validation of non-formal and informal learning education and training, the workplace and society. In an increasing number of countries, it is at the top of the policy and research agenda ranking among the possible ways to redress the glaring lack of relevant academic and vocational qualifications and to promote the development of competences and certification procedures which recognise different types of learning, including formal, non-formal and informal learning. The aim of the book is therefore to present and share experience, expertise and lessons in such a way that enables its effective and immediate use across the full spectrum of country contexts, whether in the developing or developed world. It examines the importance of meeting institutional and political requirements that give genuine value to the recognition of non-formal and informal learning; it shows why recognition is important and clarifies its usefulness and the role it serves in education, working life and voluntary work; it emphasises the importance of the coordination, interests, motivations, trust and acceptance by all stakeholders. The volume is also premised on an understanding of a learning society, in which all social and cultural groups, irrespective of gender, race, social class, ethnicity, mental health difficulties are entitled to quality learning throughout their lives. Overall the thrust is to see the importance of recognising non-formal and informal learning as part of the larger movement for re-directing education and training for change. This change is one that builds on an equitable society and economy and on sustainable development principles and values such as respect for others, respect for difference and diversity, exploration and dialogue.

Progress maps for the learning and development of children under the age of 6: A reference framework by SINEACE 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 14 hours ago

Children begin to learn before entering educational institutions. From birth they gradually develop the social-emotional, communicative, cognitive and motor skills and competencies which allow them to interact with others: to understand and communicate affection, needs, desires, ideas, emotions and thoughts; as well as to overcome everyday situations. The foundations for learning are laid in the first years of life and there are currently more than 200 million children under the age of 5 who cannot reach their developmental potential due to poverty, poor health, poor nutrition or lack of fundamental education during this important period. Early Childhood Development (ECD) is a progressive, multidimensional, integral and timely process that translates into the construction of increasingly complex abilities in navigating social networks and the interaction with the environment in order for children to fully exercise their rights. The meaningful interactions that children have with adults in quality environments play a central role in their development and learning. These caregivers are not only responsible for the feeding and resting of the child, but also provide an adequate environment for learning and development, and interpret their emotional state, helping them to regulate it; in this way, the development of trust, curiosity, purposefulness, and self-control, and the ability to relate, communicate and cooperate with others is allowed. Currently, worldwide efforts are being made to improve the quality of services for children under the age of 6, in order to provide comprehensive care and education that guarantees the right to an equitable education regardless of social, cultural or economic background. Current research agrees that a determining factor in the learning and development of the child is the adult who accompanies him and the understanding they have of the process of learning and development at this age. With this in mind, the National System of ...

A Direct Republic: The Null Hypothesis of Politics: (How to automate a legislature) by Donnie Gebert 3.5 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified one day ago

A direct republic is an organizational model utilizing select parts of a direct democracy and a constitutional republic. All members of a direct republic sign and agree the constitution/social contract. This contract states you will not engage in murder, rape, theft, and basic crimes against humanity. Once signed, the individual becomes their own representative and places social contributions directly into the funding pools for the social projects they approve of. All other laws are agreed to by adding modular pieces of law onto ones own palate of need. This means the legislature is assembled in a DIY or build-a-bear fashion. Executives are, de facto, the individuals in charge of the projects you fund. The judiciary is self directed and handled by contract. Cases are settled in the arbitration services selected by contract, not by mandated courts with centralized statutes.

The Dream Is Over: The Crisis of Clark Kerr's California Idea of Higher Education (The Clark Kerr Lectures On the Role of Higher Education in Society ... by Simon Marginson (University of California Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program for monographs. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. The Dream Is Over tells the extraordinary story of the 1960 Master Plan for Higher Education in California, created by visionary University of California President Clark Kerr and his contemporaries. The Master Plan's equality of opportunity policy brought college within reach of millions of American families for the first time and fashioned the world's leading system of public research universities. The California idea became the leading model for higher education across the world and has had great influence in the rapid growth of universities in China and East Asia. Yet, remarkably, the political conditions supporting the California idea in California itself have evaporated. Universal access is faltering, public tuition is rising, the great research universities face new challenges, and educational participation in California, once the national leader, lags far behind. Can the social values embodied in Kerr's vision be renewed?

Democracy's Children: Intellectuals and the Rise of Cultural Politics by John McGowan (Cornell University Press) 3.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified one day ago

How do American intellectuals try to achieve their political and social goals? By what means do they articulate their hopes for change? John McGowan seeks to identify the goals and strategies of contemporary humanistic intellectuals who strive to shape the politics and culture of their time. In a lively mix of personal reflection and shrewd analysis, McGowan visits the sites of intellectual activity (scholarly publications, professional conferences, the classroom, and the university) and considers the hazards of working within such institutional contexts to effect change outside the academy. Democracy's Children considers the historical trajectory that produced current intellectual practices. McGowan links the growing prestige of "culture" since 1800 to the growth of democracy and the obsession with modernity and explores how intellectuals became both custodians and creators of culture. Caught between fears of culture's irrelevance and dreams of its omnipotence, intellectuals pursue a cultural politics that aims for wide-ranging social transformations. For better or worse, McGowan says, the humanities are now tied to culture and to the university. The opportunities and frustrations attendant on this partnership resonate with the larger successes and failures of contemporary democratic societies. His purpose in this collection of essays is to illuminate the conditions under which intellectuals in a democracy work and at the same time to promote intellectual activities that further democratic ideals.

Lift Us Up, Don't Push Us Out!: Voices from the Front Lines of the Educational Justice Movement by Mark R. Warren (Beacon Press) 4.1 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 21 hours ago

Parents, young people, community organizers, and educators describe how they are fighting systemic racism in schools by building a new intersectional educational justice movement. Illuminating the struggles and triumphs of the emerging educational justice movement, this anthology tells the stories of how black and brown parents, students, educators, and their allies are fighting back against systemic inequities and the mistreatment of children of color in low-income communities. It offers a social justice alternative to the corporate reform movement that seeks to privatize public education through expanding charter schools and voucher programs. To address the systemic racism in our education system and in the broader society, the contributors argue that what is needed is a movement led by those most affected by injustice--students of color and their parents--that builds alliances across sectors and with other social justice movements addressing immigration, LGBTQ rights, labor rights, and the school-to-prison pipeline. Representing a diverse range of social justice organizations from across the US, including the Chicago Teachers Union and the Genders and Sexualities Alliance Network, the essayists recount their journeys to movement building and offer practical organizing strategies and community-based alternatives to traditional education reform and privatization schemes. Lift Us Up! will outrage, inform, and mobilize parents, educators, and concerned citizens about what is wrong in American schools today and how activists are fighting for and achieving change.

Indigenous Knowledge and Education in Africa (Frontiers in African Business Research) by Chika Ezeanya-Esiobu (Springer) Price verified 15 hours ago

This open access book presents a strong philosophical, theoretical and practical argument for the mainstreaming of indigenous knowledge in curricula development, and in teaching and learning across the African continent. Since the dawn of political independence in Africa, there has been an ongoing search for the kind of education that will create a class of principled and innovative citizens who are sensitive to and committed to the needs of the continent. When indigenous or environment-generated knowledge forms the basis of learning in classrooms, learners are able to immediately connect their education with their lived reality. The result is much introspection, creativity and innovation across fields, sectors and disciplines, leading to societal transformation. Drawing on several theoretical assertions, examples from a wide range of disciplines, and experiences gathered from different continents at different points in history, the book establishes that for education to trigger the necessary transformation in Africa, it should be constructed on a strong foundation of learners' indigenous knowledge. The book presents a distinct and uncharted pathway for Africa to advance sustainably through home-grown and grassroots based ideas, leading to advances in science and technology, growth of indigenous African business and the transformation of Africans into conscious and active participants in the continent's progress. Indigenous Knowledge and Education in Africa is of interest to educators, entrepreneurs, policymakers, researchers and individuals engaged in finding sustainable and strategic solutions to regional and global advancement.
