The language and the themes of these books are suitable for children from two to eight years old. These are bilingual books written in both Hindi and English. Sins of Summer by Linda Heavner Gerald (Lime Pie Publisher) Price verified 4 hours ago

How much abuse can a person take before breaking? At what point does the abused become the abuser? These questions cause us to stop and ponder. Such things are discussed in the Bible as well as Shakespeare. In this psychological thriller, Linda Heavner Gerald grips you from the beginning with these compelling questions. The life of Audrey Brock is used as an example. Things began as a dream for the beautiful Audrey but quickly descended into Hell for this beauty who experienced horrible abuse and betrayal. How could she cope with the pain? Her story grabs at our very core. Maybe we shouldn't be so quick to judge our neighbor? Life may look perfect, but is it? Audrey and John Brock began life committed to a life together. They pledged undying love to each other. What Audrey suffered, earlier in her life, destroyed any chance of finding happiness. She didn't understand the degree of damage which she carried. Horrible dreams tortured her nights. Anger, alcoholism, loss of friends, weight gain, and depression almost destroyed the "golden girl." The power, which she finally discovered, allowed her to forgive a monster. The person whom she forgave could never understand that by forgiving him, Audrey set herself free.

Hiking Life's Difficult Trails: A Spiritual Journey (Hiking the Trail of Truth Book 2) by Mark Stephen Taylor (Createspace) 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Hiking Life's Difficult Trails is a spiritual journey -- an arduous challenge. This particular journey is much better suited to those who have learned to live with remorse -- who have earned it through a broad diversity of loss, pain and suffering. There are those who in time develop what it takes to negotiate difficult terrain in life, and there are those who do not. Yet to have what it takes has only one requirement -- humility. We all fail in one way or another each day. Admit it or not, we just can't seem to attain perfection. We usually blame God for our inability to live as we should, but them praise Him when He allows things to get a little better. We just can't seem to find a way to be content in our circumstances, and be thankful for both the good ones and the bad ones. But, the bottom line is, we actually have some profound misunderstandings -- about life, about circumstances, and about God himself. It's time once again to hike along with award-winning author Mark Stephen Taylor. In this second volume, he takes us back to the wilderness trail -- not just to hike along its rim, but to explore its depths -- to hike up its buttes, among its sharp crags, and into its areas of parched desolation. Mr. Taylor helps us to better understand the difficulties of this earthly life, and leads us along a most profound trail of discovery, illumination, and hope. Hiking is indeed great therapy. So, what are you waiting for? C'mon along -- let's do it!

Create Aha Moments: Tips for Teachers by Dennison S. Bhola 5.0 Stars (17 Reviews)    Price verified 42 minutes ago

Teachers and trainers: Are you ready to create more Aha moments? Are you ready to help your students learn and truly understand more of the content you are presenting?Create Aha! Moments discusses how to convert "teachable moments" into "Aha! Now, I understand" moments, using clear language and metaphors that make the process easy to conceptualize and apply. When teachable moments are not converted into "Aha! Moments" valuable opportunities to facilitate learning are lost. To be able to consistently create "Aha! Moments," teachers need to be aware of when teachable moments are likely to arise, expectantly await them, and be able to recognize them as soon as they present themselves. Then, with the conditions set for learning, teachers can employ high-quality feedback to ensure that learning happens, i.e., to ensure the learning "light bulbs" are illuminated!

How to Create a Perfect School: Maintain Students' Motivation and Love of Learning from Kindergarten through 12th Grade by Lee Jenkins (LtoJ Press) 4.6 Stars (14 Reviews)    Price verified 22 hours ago

Parents and educators have the same desire: to hear students exclaim, "School is challenging, but I love it!" Unfortunately, our current education system does very little to produce these results. Why? Because we do not know how to preserve and grow students' intrinsic motivation. That is the focus of How to Create a Perfect School. Lee Jenkins wrote this invaluable guide to share the proven processes he has developed which encourage students to work hard and enjoy learning. These processes include: • organizing student input to maintain their kindergarten level of intrinsic motivation • replacing school practices that destroy motivation with ones that accelerate motivation • honoring every student for outperforming their own best work • adding up every student's contribution for team totals • creating students who can clearly explain the learning process to any interested adult. Do these processes really work? Yes! This method has been tested with more than 7500 students, and the results are in. Teachers using this method see an increase in classroom learning by six times the national average. Do you want this to be your school? Then look no further. How to Create a Perfect School is the book you need to lead your students into long-lasting, student-driven academic success.

Ancient Africa: A Captivating Guide to Ancient African Civilizations, Such as the Kingdom of Kush, the Land of Punt, Carthage, the Kingdom of Aksum, ... by Captivating History 4.9 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 42 minutes ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of ancient Africa, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! Africa is the continent where the first humans were born. They explored the vast land and produced the first tools. And although we migrated from that continent, we never completely abandoned it. From the beginning of time, humans lived and worked in Africa, leaving evidence of their existence in the sands of the Sahara Desert and the valleys of the great rivers, such as the Nile and Niger. Some of the earliest great civilizations were born there, and they give us an insight into the smaller kingdoms of ancient Africa. Egypt is the main source of knowledge of many neighboring kingdoms that were just as rich and developed. Unfortunately, they were forgotten in time, as other civilizations and kingdoms replaced them as the continent's power bases. Only recently are we rediscovering the might of the Kingdom of Aksum, the political prowess of Kush, and the richness of the mysterious Punt. The early medieval kingdoms of Ghana and Mali are still being researched due to their unique pre-Muslim culture and their own outlook on Islam. As the home of the many pharaohs, Queen Sheba, Hannibal Barca, and Mansa Musa, Africa deserves our full attention. It has stories to tell us and cultural riches to share with us. Africa is where paganism, Christianity, and Islam left their trails and created a cultural fusion that is unique to the continent. Some modern countries are popular tourist destinations, while others are war-torn lands still unable to industrialize. This polarity of Africa can be traced to ancient times, and the world-shaping events that occurred here need to be studied and understood. In Ancient Africa: A Captivating Guide to Ancient African Civilizations, Such as the Kingdom of Kush, the Land of Punt, Carthage, the Kingdom of Aksum, and the Mali Empire with its Timbuktu, you will discover topics such as • The Kingdom of Kush • The Land of ...

Anyone who has enjoyed a snack or two from a delightful swimming pool imitates the same practice in the water towns of China from times past. Brocade and printed silk fabrics were first created in China. Iridescent porcelain is a product of the Ming dynasty. The Chinese were among the first to develop blast furnaces. They were the first to invent fireworks and gunpowder. And the list goes on and on. As you read this book, you will note that history tends to repeat itself in the rise and fall of the many dynasties of China. However, you will also notice that there are clear distinctions between one era and the next. Your Guide to Get into Medical School: Practical Advice by Trusted Professionals by Aly Madhavji 3.9 Stars (15 Reviews)    Price verified 42 minutes ago

It is commonly known that the application process to medical school is competitive. From our experience, about 1% of students who express an interest in becoming a physician during their first year of undergraduate studies, eventually matriculate into medical school. While pursuing a career in medicine remains a dream for many and is considered the endpoint of a journey, many different paths can lead towards that destination. Given the significant time commitment required for a successful application, the decision to pursue medicine is one of the biggest decisions many high school and undergraduate students face. However, many applicants do not look beyond gaining the coveted admission letter and are then left with an incomplete understanding of what medical school entails, and the diverse career paths they can take after obtaining their MD. One of the primary reasons for this is that despite significant progress made in recent years, medicine remains a "closed door" career. A large proportion of students in our medical class had at least one immediate relative within the profession, which is also reflected in the literature. The barriers created by such exclusivity make it difficult for those who have not been socialized into the profession from a young age to navigate the unspoken pitfalls of the admissions process. This book attempts to break down some of those barriers. It focuses on every component of the medical school application process. It differs from the many other books written on this subject by taking an experiential approach. We believe that the best way to learn about medical school acceptance is to garner advice from those who have recently achieved that milestone, as well, as from individuals in related professions who can provide valuable insights. This guide is divided into ten chapters, each of them covering an important step along a premed's journey. While this book has a focus on North America, we have written this guide with a global ...

The Cold War in the Classroom: International Perspectives on Textbooks and Memory Practices (Palgrave Studies in Educational Media) by Barbara Christophe (Palgrave Macmillan) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 42 minutes ago

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book explores how the socially disputed period of the Cold War is remembered in today's history classroom. Applying a diverse set of methodological strategies, the authors map the dividing lines in and between memory cultures across the globe, paying special attention to the impact the crisis-driven age of our present has on images of the past. Authors analysing educational media point to ambivalence, vagueness and contradictions in textbook narratives understood to be echoes of societal and academic controversies. Others focus on teachers and the history classroom, showing how unresolved political issues create tensions in history education. They render visible how teachers struggle to handle these challenges by pretending that what they do is 'just history'. The contributions to this book unveil how teachers, backgrounding the political inherent in all memory practices, often nourish the illusion that the history in which they are engaged is all about addressing the past with a reflexive and disciplined approach.

Empowering Teachers to Build a Better World: How Six Nations Support Teachers for 21st Century Education (SpringerBriefs in Education) by Fernando M. Reimers (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 42 minutes ago

This open access book presents a comparative study on how large-scale professional development programs for teachers are designed and implemented. Around the world, governments and educators are recognizing the need to educate students in a broad range of higher order cognitive skills and socio-emotional competencies, and providing effective opportunities for teachers to develop the expertise needed to teach these skills is a crucial aspect of effective implementation of curricula which include those goals. This study examines how large-scale efforts to empower teachers for deeper instruction have been designed, how they have been implemented, and their outcomes. To do so, it investigates six programs from England, Colombia, Mexico, India, and the United States. Though all six are intended to broaden and deepen students' curricular aspirations, each takes this expansion of curricular goals in a different direction. The ambitious education reforms studied here explicitly focus on building teachers' capacity to teach on a broader set of goals. Through a discerning analysis of program documents, evaluations, and interviews with senior leaders and participants in the programs, the book identifies the various theories of action used in these programs, examines how they were implemented, and discusses what they achieved. As such, it offers an indispensable resource for education leaders interested in designing and implementing professional development programs for teachers that are aligned with ambitious instructional goals.

This open access thematic report identifies factors and conditions that can help schools and education systems promote tolerance in a globalized world. The IEA's International Civic and Citizenship Study (ICCS) is a comparative research program designed to investigate the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens, and provides a wealth of data permitting not only comparison between countries but also comparisons between schools within countries, and students within countries. Advanced analytical methods provide insights into relationships between students' attitudes towards cultural diversity and the characteristics of the students themselves, their families, their teachers and school principals. The rich diversity of educational and cultural contexts in the 38 countries who participated in ICCS 2009 are also acknowledged and addressed. Readers interested in civic education and adolescents' attitudes towards cultural diversity will find the theoretical perspectives explored engaging. For readers interested in methodology, the advanced analytical methods employed present textbook examples of how to address cross-cultural comparability of measurement instruments and multilevel data structures in international large-scale assessments (ILSA). Meanwhile, those interested in educational policy should find the identification and comparison of malleable factors across education systems that contribute to positive student attitudes towards cultural diversity a useful and thought-provoking resource.

Handbook of Education Policy Studies: School/University, Curriculum, and Assessment, Volume 2 by Guorui Fan (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 42 minutes ago

This open access handbook brings together the latest research from a wide range of internationally influential scholars to analyze educational policy research from international, historical and interdisciplinary perspectives. By effectively breaking through the boundaries between countries and disciplines, it presents new theories, techniques and methods for contemporary education policy, and illustrates the educational policies and educational reform practices that various countries have introduced to meet the challenges of continuous change. This volume focuses on policies and changes in schools and classrooms. The studies on school changes present the differences in the policies and challenges of K-12 schools and universities in different countries and regions, and in connection with the contradictions and conflicts between tradition and modernization, as well as the changing roles of various stakeholders, especially that of teachers. In terms of curriculum and instruction, many countries have undertaken experiments and introduced changes based on two major themes: "what to teach" and "how to teach". International education assessments represented by PISA not only promote the improvement and extensive application of educational assessment and testing techniques, but have also had far-reaching impacts on education policies and education reforms in many countries. Focusing on the changes in educational policies at the micro level, this volume comprehensively reveals the complex interactions between school organizations, teachers, curricula, teaching and learning, evaluation and other elements within the education system, as well as the latest related reforms worldwide.

Student Misconceptions and Errors in Physics and Mathematics: Exploring Data from TIMSS and TIMSS Advanced (IEA Research for Education Book 9) by Teresa Neidorf (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 42 minutes ago

This open access report explores the nature and extent of students' misconceptions and misunderstandings related to core concepts in physics and mathematics and physics across grades four, eight and 12. Twenty years of data from the IEA's Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and TIMSS Advanced assessments are analyzed, specifically for five countries (Italy, Norway, Russian Federation, Slovenia, and the United States) who participated in all or almost all TIMSS and TIMSS Advanced assessments between 1995 and 2015. The report focuses on students' understandings related to gravitational force in physics and linear equations in mathematics. It identifies some specific misconceptions, errors, and misunderstandings demonstrated by the TIMSS Advanced grade 12 students for these core concepts, and shows how these can be traced back to poor foundational development of these concepts in earlier grades. Patterns in misconceptions and misunderstandings are reported by grade, country, and gender. In addition, specific misconceptions and misunderstandings are tracked over time, using trend items administered in multiple assessment cycles. The study and associated methodology may enable education systems to help identify specific needs in the curriculum, improve inform instruction across grades and also raise possibilities for future TIMSS assessment design and reporting that may provide more diagnostic outcomes.

Preparing for Life in a Digital Age: The IEA International Computer and Information Literacy Study International Report by Julian Fraillon (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 42 minutes ago

Ability to use information and communication technologies (ICT) is an imperative for effective participation in today's digital age. Schools worldwide are responding to the need to provide young people with that ability. But how effective are they in this regard? The IEA International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) responded to this question by studying the extent to which young people have developed computer and information literacy (CIL), which is defined as the ability to use computers to investigate, create and communicate with others at home, school, the workplace and in society. The study was conducted under the auspices of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) and builds on a series of earlier IEA studies focusing on ICT in education. Data were gathered from almost 60,000 Grade 8 students in more than 3,300 schools from 21 education systems. This information was augmented by data from almost 35,000 teachers in those schools and by contextual data collected from school ICT-coordinators, school principals and the ICILS national research centers. The IEA ICILS team systematically investigated differences among the participating countries in students' CIL outcomes, how participating countries were providing CIL-related education and how confident teachers were in using ICT in their pedagogical practice. The team also explored differences within and across countries with respect to relationships between CIL education outcomes and student characteristics and school contexts. In general, the study findings presented in this international report challenge the notion of young people as "digital natives" with a self-developed capacity to use digital technology. The large variations in CIL proficiency within and across the ICILS countries suggest it is naive to expect young people to develop CIL in the absence of coherent learning programs. Findings also indicate that system- and school-level planning ...

Early Childhood Policies and Systems in Eight Countries: Findings from IEA's Early Childhood Education Study by Tony Bertram (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 42 minutes ago

This report provides an overview of policy strategies on early childhood education settings (from birth to primary schooling) in eight countries. Data were collected using a policy questionnaire addressed to and completed by the National Research Coordinator(s) (NRC) of Chile, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Italy, Poland, the Russian Federation and the United States. The countries that participated provide interesting illustrations of early childhood education policy in action in a range of diverse contexts. Analysis of the systemic and structural results of ECE policy at national and, where necessary, subnational levels, enables transnational comparisons in policy and systems. Key policy changes, both underway and planned, are documented. These data reveal key findings in each of the five policy areas as covered in the questionnaire and this report: public policy; delivery models and providers; participation and enrollment; quality assurance systems; and expectations for child outcomes. In particular, the study aims to provide meaningful information for countries, states and jurisdictions across the world in relation to early childhood education, mapping the systems, structures and user pathways in place, along with the perceptions of stakeholders about the system, its functioning and impact. This comprehensive assessment of the wider policy contexts and settings for early childhood education includes teacher/practitioner qualifications, pedagogy approaches, and opportunities for professional development. Such information will enable countries to review their early childhood education systems in an international context.

Global Perspectives on Recognising Non-formal and Informal Learning: Why Recognition Matters (Technical and Vocational Education and Training: ... by Madhu Singh (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 42 minutes ago

This book deals with the relevance of recognition and validation of non-formal and informal learning education and training, the workplace and society. In an increasing number of countries, it is at the top of the policy and research agenda ranking among the possible ways to redress the glaring lack of relevant academic and vocational qualifications and to promote the development of competences and certification procedures which recognise different types of learning, including formal, non-formal and informal learning. The aim of the book is therefore to present and share experience, expertise and lessons in such a way that enables its effective and immediate use across the full spectrum of country contexts, whether in the developing or developed world. It examines the importance of meeting institutional and political requirements that give genuine value to the recognition of non-formal and informal learning; it shows why recognition is important and clarifies its usefulness and the role it serves in education, working life and voluntary work; it emphasises the importance of the coordination, interests, motivations, trust and acceptance by all stakeholders. The volume is also premised on an understanding of a learning society, in which all social and cultural groups, irrespective of gender, race, social class, ethnicity, mental health difficulties are entitled to quality learning throughout their lives. Overall the thrust is to see the importance of recognising non-formal and informal learning as part of the larger movement for re-directing education and training for change. This change is one that builds on an equitable society and economy and on sustainable development principles and values such as respect for others, respect for difference and diversity, exploration and dialogue.

The HUMAN Project by Erika Ilves (THE HUMAN PROJECT) 4.3 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

What should our generation do to advance the ongoing human project? THE HUMAN PROJECT is an intellectual adventure into the future of our species and an invitation to reach for the stars. Literally. Think of the ongoing human project as an inter-generational relay. How is our generation -- all of us living at the beginning of the 21st century -- doing in our leg of the journey? Today we can't give a good answer. We are mostly making it up as we go. But what if we put some serious thought into it? Our unprecedented connectivity and access to knowledge makes it easier than ever. So let's look as far into the future as our knowledge allows. Let's lay out all the known challenges to our existence and opportunities for our evolution. Then, let's step back and think: Where do we want to take the human project and why? What are the most important contributions our generation can make during our brief window of existence? And how do we get going? We (the authors) take these questions head on in THE HUMAN PROJECT. Our answers are based on 3 years of research spanning fields from cosmology to biology, Big History to science fiction. We've studied scores of the global challenge lists put together by inter-governmental organizations, global fora, billionaire philanthropists, and former presidents. We've immersed ourselves in public debates on issues that are now well-understood and sought out lonely voices speaking about issues that have yet to register in the public's awareness. We offer our answers as a conversation starter. If you are a concerned member of the human race wondering where to place your life's energy or just your cognitive or financial surplus, THE HUMAN PROJECT is a good place to start.

Teaching Health Care in Virtual Space: Best Practices for Educators in Multi-User Virtual Environments by ESTELLE E CODIER (University of Hawaii Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 42 minutes ago

Teaching Health Care in Virtual Space is the first "how-to" manual for health educators on the instructional use of three-dimensional, computer-generated virtual environments that can be inhabited simultaneously by many participants; commonly called "multi-user virtual learning environments" or MUVE. Based on her experience supervising more than 400 learning activities in Second Life® -- as of 2014, the largest public (free) MUVE -- Dr. Estelle Codier has written a step-by-step handbook for novice and experienced MUVE teachers alike. The book provides those new to virtual teaching with specific steps to assess their own instructional readiness, guidance for assessing student and class readiness, as well as detailed descriptions of problem prevention and solutions. The text is accompanied by lively case studies of both success and failure in virtual learning environments. Inspiring stories of student learning illustrate the power of MUVE to transform health care education. This innovative handbook presents an extended discussion of the pedagogical advantages for learning in multi-user virtual environments, along with a history of learning in Second Life®. The text includes an appendix of supporting materials for MUVE learning activities: evaluation grids, grading matrices, syllabus descriptions, and detailed orientation materials for both faculty and students. While the sample learning activities were designed for nurses, instructors in other disciplines could easily adapt them for use in any MUVE setting.
