"I was prepared." "I have the skills to do well." "I studied like crazy." "Why couldn't I reach my standardized test goal?" As an experienced educator and test prep expert, this sad chorus is all too familiar to me. So many students feel as though they did all they could possibly do to put themselves in a position to succeed on their SAT, ACT, or AP exam, only to fall painfully short of their goals. They feel perplexed and deflated. But they neglect to consider one very important piece of the test-taking puzzle: the mindset. Developing the proper mindset for standardized testing is paramount in performing well on any exam. Unfortunately, it is also the most frequently overlooked factor. The Test Prep Mindset Pocketbook is the perfect companion to any test prep study guide. It helps test-takers cultivate their mindset by familiarizing themselves with the basic concepts of test-taking strategy, meditation, and mindfulness. Whether a student is preparing for the SAT, ACT, or AP exam using Collegeboard, The Official ACT, Princeton Review, Kaplan, or Barron's texts, The Test Prep Mindset Pocketbook is a must have. The simple format and relatable analogies make the strategies discussed in the book easily understandable and applicable for students. The Test Prep Mindset Pocketbook is not only crucial to a student's test preparation, but its mindset concepts and strategies are also essential to living a balanced and connected life, both academically and personally.

Hypersanity: Thinking Beyond Thinking (Ataraxia Book 5) by Neel Burton (Acheron Press) 4.2 Stars (41 Reviews)    Price verified one day ago

Sharpen your mind, reframe your perspectives, and unleash your full human potential RD Laing presented madness as a voyage of discovery that could open out onto a free state of higher consciousness, or hypersanity. But if there is such a thing as hypersanity, then mere sanity is not all it's cracked up to be, a state of dormancy and dullness with less vital potential even than madness. We could all go mad, in a way we already are, minus the promise. But what if there was another route to hypersanity, one which, compared to madness, was less fearsome, less dangerous, and less damaging? What if, as well as a backdoor way, there was also a royal road strewn with petals and sprayed with perfume? This is a book about thinking, which, astonishingly, is barely taught in formal education. Our culture mostly equates thinking with logical reasoning, and the first few chapters examine logic, reason, their forms, and their flaws, starting with the basics of argumentation. But thinking is also about much more than logical reasoning, and so the book broadens out to examine concepts such as intelligence, knowledge, and truth, and alternative forms of cognition that our culture tends to overlook and underplay, including intuition, emotion, and imagination. If Hypersanity fails to live up to its tall promise, it should at least make you into a better thinker. And so you can approach the book as an opportunity to hone your thinking skills, which, in the end, are going to be far more important to your impact and wellbeing than any facts that you could ever learn. As BF Skinner once put it, 'Education is what survives when what has been learnt has been forgotten.' Burton guides the reader to unlearn, rediscover, and return to wholeness. It is a journey out of Plato's cave... -- The International Review of Books About the author Dr Neel Burton is a psychiatrist, philosopher, and wine-lover who lives and teaches in Oxford, England. He is a Fellow of Green-Templeton College in the ...

Evolution of an Educator: There is Room for Love in Teaching by Ted Hamilton 5.0 Stars (16 Reviews)    Price verified 13 hours ago

At four years old, my mother returned from the hospital, her brain tumor removed. The remaining schizophrenia and the damage of the surgery ensured the woman who bore me would not be the one who raised me. These pages color the reality of living with mental illness, and the evolution I experienced growing up in that crucible of turmoil. I offer real faces and true testimonials, how I sought to right the wrongs done to me by doing for others what was needed. Inside is all of it: the Kid Talks and pool tables, the criminals and the matriarchs, a whole other world in education and the culture that drove it. These memories became my origin story, how one broken child used his own hurt to understand others, and it's the narrative of how I found room for love in teaching.

The British Raj: A Captivating Guide to the British in India, Starting from the Indian Rebellion of 1857 to the Indian Independence Act of 1947 by Captivating History 4.5 Stars (16 Reviews)    Price verified 13 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the British Raj, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! The British presence in India lasted for nearly 350 years, but only the last 90 were under the direct rule of the British government. To some, ninety years might seem a short period to write a history book about. However, the time of the British Raj was very influential. It brought change to Indian politics, education, society, infrastructure, industry, and other aspects of Indian life. But while the British Empire brought modernization to its colonies, that modernization came with a price. The British Raj did not cover just where India is today. In fact, it spanned across the territories of four separate states that exist today: Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, and Burma. It is estimated that around a quarter of a million British were buried in these territories since the East India Company set its first foothold. The oldest European graves can be found in port cities such as Madras or Bombay, where the first merchants settled trading offices. In The British Raj: A Captivating Guide to the British in India, Starting from the Indian Rebellion of 1857 to the Indian Independence Act of 1947, you will discover topics such as • East India Company, the First British Presence on the Indian Subcontinent • East India Company, the First British Presence on the Indian Subcontinent • The Crown's Rule of India • The Famines of India • Nationalism in India • India during World War I • Mahatma Gandhi • World War II, the "Quit India" Movement, and Independence • And much, much more! Overcoming Financial Failure: A Peace Treaty with the System by Andrew L. Hicks 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 19 hours ago

After being inspired by the work of independent author Yann Girard, Andrew L. Hicks took a 30-day challenge to write each day about something he knows about, and then self-publish his work. He doesn't know about anything more than financial failure. Andrew has never before read a book that speaks to his particular demographic (35, male, financially illiterate, unemployable, but driven to aspire for greatness nonetheless), so he wrote it. In this book, he looks back on his many financial blunders and analyzes his long-held beliefs about money and success, with the intention of recalibrating his life and taking on bold new frontiers. Will he succeed? Will he fail? Will his demons slaughter him before he finds a place in this world? No one can say who will emerge victorious. (He'll be fine.)

The Human Race is God too! Also He is [Your Name]: [Your Name] by Kevin Pattison (Global Stabilized Energy LLC) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 49 minutes ago

I know there are more ways to see God then just faith alone for some the intellectual if they see it, it will be the scientific proof for His (Gods) existences, for the religious it is the completed Bible guided by the Universe to end up where God and self are one by education too! For the spiritual it is knowing God from within (not thinking you know or believing you know but when you "know" it is right gods way it JUST IS! correct) all together to know how the Universe works. It is One God, One Love and One truth to have all the knowledge in the Universe and live in one reality all together Gods reality or the same as what could be our reality what is the small part in all of us on our spiritual side. We are able to have the way with the right formula to find the whole truth to set us free by using the four truths 1. Man 2. Woman 3. God 4. Human simultaneously together to find the one truth per issue. God is education by the whole truth (not partial truths like the church teaches unknowingly) when using the parallel universe for the part of God that can be split, separated and divided up explaining why when and how God is the way for knowledge in all thing and living things that which is inside all of us (we can get to with the right teachings). I would like to unite the professionals in their related fields to open their minds all together as one to define God as it is not all in this book.

Democracy's Children: Intellectuals and the Rise of Cultural Politics by John McGowan (Cornell University Press) 3.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 7 hours ago

How do American intellectuals try to achieve their political and social goals? By what means do they articulate their hopes for change? John McGowan seeks to identify the goals and strategies of contemporary humanistic intellectuals who strive to shape the politics and culture of their time. In a lively mix of personal reflection and shrewd analysis, McGowan visits the sites of intellectual activity (scholarly publications, professional conferences, the classroom, and the university) and considers the hazards of working within such institutional contexts to effect change outside the academy. Democracy's Children considers the historical trajectory that produced current intellectual practices. McGowan links the growing prestige of "culture" since 1800 to the growth of democracy and the obsession with modernity and explores how intellectuals became both custodians and creators of culture. Caught between fears of culture's irrelevance and dreams of its omnipotence, intellectuals pursue a cultural politics that aims for wide-ranging social transformations. For better or worse, McGowan says, the humanities are now tied to culture and to the university. The opportunities and frustrations attendant on this partnership resonate with the larger successes and failures of contemporary democratic societies. His purpose in this collection of essays is to illuminate the conditions under which intellectuals in a democracy work and at the same time to promote intellectual activities that further democratic ideals.

Lift Us Up, Don't Push Us Out!: Voices from the Front Lines of the Educational Justice Movement by Mark R. Warren (Beacon Press) 4.1 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 14 hours ago

Parents, young people, community organizers, and educators describe how they are fighting systemic racism in schools by building a new intersectional educational justice movement. Illuminating the struggles and triumphs of the emerging educational justice movement, this anthology tells the stories of how black and brown parents, students, educators, and their allies are fighting back against systemic inequities and the mistreatment of children of color in low-income communities. It offers a social justice alternative to the corporate reform movement that seeks to privatize public education through expanding charter schools and voucher programs. To address the systemic racism in our education system and in the broader society, the contributors argue that what is needed is a movement led by those most affected by injustice--students of color and their parents--that builds alliances across sectors and with other social justice movements addressing immigration, LGBTQ rights, labor rights, and the school-to-prison pipeline. Representing a diverse range of social justice organizations from across the US, including the Chicago Teachers Union and the Genders and Sexualities Alliance Network, the essayists recount their journeys to movement building and offer practical organizing strategies and community-based alternatives to traditional education reform and privatization schemes. Lift Us Up! will outrage, inform, and mobilize parents, educators, and concerned citizens about what is wrong in American schools today and how activists are fighting for and achieving change.

Your Guide to Get into Medical School: Practical Advice by Trusted Professionals by Aly Madhavji 3.9 Stars (15 Reviews)    Price verified 25 minutes ago

It is commonly known that the application process to medical school is competitive. From our experience, about 1% of students who express an interest in becoming a physician during their first year of undergraduate studies, eventually matriculate into medical school. While pursuing a career in medicine remains a dream for many and is considered the endpoint of a journey, many different paths can lead towards that destination. Given the significant time commitment required for a successful application, the decision to pursue medicine is one of the biggest decisions many high school and undergraduate students face. However, many applicants do not look beyond gaining the coveted admission letter and are then left with an incomplete understanding of what medical school entails, and the diverse career paths they can take after obtaining their MD. One of the primary reasons for this is that despite significant progress made in recent years, medicine remains a "closed door" career. A large proportion of students in our medical class had at least one immediate relative within the profession, which is also reflected in the literature. The barriers created by such exclusivity make it difficult for those who have not been socialized into the profession from a young age to navigate the unspoken pitfalls of the admissions process. This book attempts to break down some of those barriers. It focuses on every component of the medical school application process. It differs from the many other books written on this subject by taking an experiential approach. We believe that the best way to learn about medical school acceptance is to garner advice from those who have recently achieved that milestone, as well, as from individuals in related professions who can provide valuable insights. This guide is divided into ten chapters, each of them covering an important step along a premed's journey. While this book has a focus on North America, we have written this guide with a global ...

Why YA?: (And What Is It, Anyway?) by Atthys Gage (Feckless Muse Press) 4.5 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified one day ago

The year 1967 saw the publication of The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, arguably the first book of serious literature for young adult readers. The author was barely 18 years old. Since then, YA has exploded into one of the largest markets in fiction with tens of thousands of new titles published every year. But how did it all get started? How has it grown? And what the heck is it anyway? For anyone who has written or wants to write (or just enjoys) YA literature, this brief, 20 page essay offers a fresh perspective on the past, present and future of a publishing phenomenon.

Life as a Professor: Observations on Declining Education Quality by Dr Randall J Dyck 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 17 hours ago

As a result of ongoing academic changes seen over the last decade, the students of today are obtaining a poorer understanding of material, which means that they are less prepared for jobs in the workplace and employers are reluctant to hire them when they graduate. Less courses are being offered in various subject areas, less details are being presented in those courses, the number of assignments is reducing, the assignments have become more brief and easier to do, less reading is required, less reference material is being given, and tests are becoming more basic. This book presents observations about the declining quality of content delivered in courses at universities and colleges, possible reasons for these changes and their impact on the quality of classroom instruction, as well as some recommended solutions that are needed. Follow along as the issues are presented and perhaps, together, we can make positive changes now that will protect the future and value of education. My technology book, "E-Commerce Concepts", discussed strategies to use when a business wanted to take advantage of e-commerce to increase their sales and international exposure. Another book, "MBA Strategic Analysis", discussed methods to use to assess business strengths so that opportunities for growth can be more effectively implemented. A final book, "Computerized Financial Systems", reviewed database designs and processes that are needed for implementing functional financial systems.

Structural change, fundamentals, and growth: A framework and case studies by Margaret McMillan 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 18 hours ago

Can developing countries use industrialization, as the East Asian economies did, to try to catch up with the high-income countries? Structural Change, Fundamentals, and Growth says the answer is likely to be "no." Rather, they will need to chart a new path to economic convergence that relies less on moving from low-productivity agriculture to higher-productivity manufacturing, and more on investing in health, education, and institutions -- although the process will take longer this way.

Consorting And Collaborating In The Education Market Place (Education Policy Perspectives) by Chris Husbands (Routledge) Price verified 15 hours ago

This text offers descriptions and analyses of some of the different ways in which schools and other educational institutions have started to establish new collaborative relationships in today's competitive educational marketplace. Using case studies, the book describes examples of such collaborative structures.; Educational consortia have been established as a vehicle for professional and curriculum development, as a source of mutual support and as a condition of mutual survival. As the "LEA monopolies" have been forced to shed many of their traditional functions or schools have opted out, schools have found it necessary to re-create parts of their collaborative structures out of sheer self- Interest.; For Some Educators Who Continue To Be Attached To Notions Of "an educational service" and professional collegiality in the provision of such a service, inter-institutional collaboration becomes seen as something to be valued independently of the instrumental benefits which it provides. For this variety of reasons, consortium working and collaborative structures seem set to develop in spite of, or as a necessary antodote to, educational markets. Understanding the role and operation of such structures is a necessity for educational managers in all parts of the educational service.

By the end of the book, not only will you have an understanding of the rules of chess, but you will also be able to understand the top beginners strategies which if practiced will allow you to challenge some of the best players in the world. Chess is one of the world's most popular board games, and is played by millions of people from all walks of life in parks, homes, online and tournaments. This two-player game is played on a checkered board with 64 squares arranged in an eight by eight grid called a chessboard. The game begins with each player possessing 16 pieces, 8 pawns, two rooks (sometimes called castles), two bishops, two knights, a queen and a king. The different player's pieces are colored differently and are usually either black or white, though colors may vary. Regardless of the color variation though, each 'team' is referred to as either black or white. The objective of the game is to 'checkmate' the opponent's king by placing it in such a position that it cannot escape capture. There are other methods to winning the game, such as when an opponent forfeits or resigns from the match. Forfeitures are normally as a result of the opponent losing too many pieces, or if a checkmate is seen as inevitable. There are also circumstances where the game ends in a draw for various reasons, meaning that neither player wins. The first official world chess championship was held in 1886 between Wilhelm Steinitz and Johannes Zukerfort. The victor and thus the first official World Champion was Wilhelm Seinitz. Since the creation of the World Chess Federation in Paris in 1924, the best chess players in the world have been awarded the title of Grandmaster, which is the ...

Indigenous Knowledge and Education in Africa (Frontiers in African Business Research) by Chika Ezeanya-Esiobu (Springer) Price verified 12 hours ago

This open access book presents a strong philosophical, theoretical and practical argument for the mainstreaming of indigenous knowledge in curricula development, and in teaching and learning across the African continent. Since the dawn of political independence in Africa, there has been an ongoing search for the kind of education that will create a class of principled and innovative citizens who are sensitive to and committed to the needs of the continent. When indigenous or environment-generated knowledge forms the basis of learning in classrooms, learners are able to immediately connect their education with their lived reality. The result is much introspection, creativity and innovation across fields, sectors and disciplines, leading to societal transformation. Drawing on several theoretical assertions, examples from a wide range of disciplines, and experiences gathered from different continents at different points in history, the book establishes that for education to trigger the necessary transformation in Africa, it should be constructed on a strong foundation of learners' indigenous knowledge. The book presents a distinct and uncharted pathway for Africa to advance sustainably through home-grown and grassroots based ideas, leading to advances in science and technology, growth of indigenous African business and the transformation of Africans into conscious and active participants in the continent's progress. Indigenous Knowledge and Education in Africa is of interest to educators, entrepreneurs, policymakers, researchers and individuals engaged in finding sustainable and strategic solutions to regional and global advancement.

Teaching for Excellence and Equity: Analyzing Teacher Characteristics, Behaviors and Student Outcomes with TIMSS (IEA Research for Education Book 6) by Nathan Burroughs (Springer) Price verified 20 hours ago

This open access book examines the interrelationship of national policy, teacher effectiveness, and student outcomes with a specific emphasis on educational equity. Using data from the IEA's Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) conducted between 1995 and 2015, it investigates grade four and grade eight data to assess trends in key teacher characteristics (experience, education, preparedness, and professional development) and teacher behaviors (instructional time and instructional content), and how these relate to student outcomes. Taking advantage of national curriculum data collected by TIMSS to assess changes in curricular strategy across countries and how these may be related to changes in teacher and student factors, the study focuses on the distributional impact of curriculum and instruction on students, paying particular attention to overall inequalities and variations in socioeconomic status at the student and country level, and how such factors have altered over time. Multiple methods, including regression and fixed effects analyses, and structural equation modelling, establish the evolution of these associations over time.

Gender Differences in Computer and Information Literacy: An In-depth Analysis of Data from ICILS (IEA Research for Education Book 8) by Eveline Gebhardt (Springer) Price verified 11 hours ago

This open access book presents a systematic investigation into internationally comparable data gathered in ICILS 2013. It identifies differences in female and male students' use of, perceptions about, and proficiency in using computer technologies. Teachers' use of computers, and their perceptions regarding the benefits of computer use in education, are also analyzed by gender. When computer technology was first introduced in schools, there was a prevailing belief that information and communication technologies were 'boys' toys'; boys were assumed to have more positive attitudes toward using computer technologies. As computer technologies have become more established throughout societies, gender gaps in students' computer and information literacy appear to be closing, although studies into gender differences remain sparse. The IEA's International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) is designed to discover how well students are prepared for study, work, and life in the digital age. Despite popular beliefs, a critical finding of ICILS 2013 was that internationally girls tended to score more highly than boys, so why are girls still not entering technology-based careers to the same extent as boys? Readers will learn how male and female students differ in their computer literacy (both general and specialized) and use of computer technology, and how the perceptions held about those technologies vary by gender.

Young People's Views of Government, Peaceful Coexistence, and Diversity in Five Latin American Countries: IEA International Civic and Citizenship ... by Wolfram Schulz (Springer) Price verified 9 hours ago

This open access report presents findings from the five Latin American countries that participated in the second cycle of the IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS 2016). ICCS 2016 investigated the ways in which a range of countries are preparing their young people to undertake their roles as citizens during the second decade of the 21st century. The study also responded to new challenges in civic and citizenship education, and its findings allow robust comparisons of lower-secondary students' attitudes to and perceptions of a wide range of aspects related to civics and citizenship. The results presented in this report come mainly from data collected via a regional Latin American student questionnaire. The findings provide insights into Latin American lower-secondary students' thoughts on government practices (e.g., corruption and authoritarian government), their attitudes toward peaceful coexistence (e.g., use of violence, disobedience to the law, empathy), and their perceptions of diversity in society (e.g., tolerance of and discrimination against minorities and homosexuals). Four of the five participating Latin American countries also participated in the previous cycle of this study (ICCS 2009), making it possible to explore changes in young people's civic-related perceptions and attitudes between 2009 and 2016. Data from the international part of the study (test and questionnaire) were used to review the extent to which region-specific perceptions relate to other factors such as students' level of civic knowledge and students' socioeconomic and educational contexts.

Lines of Inquiry in Mathematical Modelling Research in Education (ICME-13 Monographs) by Gloria Ann Stillman (Springer) Price verified 18 hours ago

This open access book is based on selected presentations from Topic Study Group 21: Mathematical Applications and Modelling in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics at the 13th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME 13), held in Hamburg, Germany on July 24-31, 2016. It contributes to the theory, research and teaching practice concerning this key topic by taking into account the importance of relations between mathematics and the real world. Further, the book addresses the "balancing act" between developing students' modelling skills on the one hand, and using modelling to help them learn mathematics on the other, which arises from the integration of modelling into classrooms. The contributions, prepared by authors from 9 countries, reflect the spectrum of international debates on the topic, and the examples presented span schooling from years 1 to 12, teacher education, and teaching modelling at the tertiary level. In addition the book highlights professional learning and development for in-service teachers, particularly in systems where the introduction of modelling into curricula means reassessing how mathematics is taught. Given its scope, the book will appeal to researchers and teacher educators in mathematics education, as well as pre-service teachers and school and university educators

Leapfrogging Inequality: Remaking Education to Help Young People Thrive by Rebecca Winthrop (Brookings Institution Press) Price verified 2 hours ago

Exemplary stories of innovation from around the world In an age of rising inequality, getting a good education increasingly separates the haves from the have nots. In countries like the United States, getting a good education is one of the most promising routes to upper-middle-class status, even more so than family wealth. Experts predict that by 2030, 825 million children will reach adulthood without basic secondary-level skills, and it will take a century for the most marginalized youth to achieve the educational levels that the wealthiest enjoy today. But these figures do not even account for the range of skills and competencies needed to thrive today in work, citizenship, and life. In a world where the ability to manipulate knowledge and information, think critically, and collaboratively solve problems are essential to thrive, access to a quality education is crucial for all young people. In Leapfrogging Inequality, researchers chart a new path for global education by examining the possibility of leapfrogging -- harnessing innovation to rapidly accelerate educational progress -- to ensure that all young people develop the skills they need for a fast-changing world. Analyzing a catalog of nearly 3,000 global education innovations, the largest such collection to date, researchers explore the potential of current practices to enable such a leap. As part of this analysis, the book presents an evidence-based framework for getting ahead in education, which it grounds in the here-and-now by narrating exemplary stories of innovation from around the world. Together, these stories and resources will inspire educators, investors, leaders of nongovernmental organizations, and policymakers alike to rally around a new vision of educational progress -- one that ensures we do not leave yet another generation of young people behind.

This open access book presents the assessment framework for IEA's International Computer an Information Literacy Study (ICILS) 2018, which is designed to assess how well students are prepared for study, work and life in a digital world. The study measures international differences in students' computer and information literacy (CIL): their ability to use computers to investigate, create, participate and communicate at home, at school, in the workplace and in the community. Participating countries also have an option for their students to complete an assessment of computational thinking (CT). The ICILS assessment framework articulates the basic structure of the study, providing a description of the ?eld and the constructs to be measured. This book outlines the design and content of the measurement instruments, sets down the rationale for those designs, and describes how measures generated by those instruments relate to the constructs. Hypothesized relations between constructs provide the foundation for some of the analyses that follow. Above all, the framework links ICILS to other similar research, enabling the contents of this assessment framework to combine theory and practice in an explication of both the 'what' and the 'how' of ICILS.

Early Algebra: Research into its Nature, its Learning, its Teaching (ICME-13 Topical Surveys) by Carolyn Kieran (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 hours ago

This survey of the state of the art on research in early algebra traces the evolution of a relatively new field of research and teaching practice. With its focus on the younger student, aged from about 6 years up to 12 years, this volume reveals the nature of the research that has been carried out in early algebra and how it has shaped the growth of the field. The survey, in presenting examples drawn from the steadily growing research base, highlights both the nature of algebraic thinking and the ways in which this thinking is being developed in the primary and early middle school student. Mathematical relations, patterns, and arithmetical structures lie at the heart of early algebraic activity, with processes such as noticing, conjecturing, generalizing, representing, justifying, and communicating being central to students' engagement.
