Family & Friends by Stephen Probst (Stephen John Probst) Price verified 10 hours ago

Family & Friends is set in the year 2012 in San Francisco's Tenderloin District, which is known for its Asian restaurants, massage parlors, strip clubs, and live music halls. The Tenderloin is a soulful party town that offers a variety of live entertainment and plenty of risqué thrills. The main characters are three adult children in an ex-Roman Catholic family: Matthew, Camelia De Wilde, and Blair. Matthew is a 36-year-old homophobic Protestant minister who is married to Eleanor, a Protestant Plain Jane who is a sharp cookie; Camelia De Wilde is a secular 34-year-old bipolar fashion model who is dating Ricardo La Cruz, a Latino playboy; Blair is a liberal 24-year-old lesbian tattoo artist who befriends Sky, a gay African-American topless dancer. Blair realizes during a bout with crack addiction that her father is, in her opinion, gay. The realization awakens in her the strength she needs to kick her addiction and find the job that has eluded her until now; however, when she confronts her parents and siblings with her belief, she is met with denial and resistance. How would the truth affect the reputations of Blair's sister Camelia, an image-conscious star model, and her brother Matthew, the minister of a conservative Protestant congregation? How could Blair, a social outcast, be so cold when the truth would devastate so many prominent interests? Camelia and Matthew, determined to save their reputations, launch an idiotic plan to silence Blair. However, the exchanges become bone-deep and the plan backfires, leaving Blair thirsting for revenge. Blair hatches a vindictive plot of her own - and then, tragedy strikes. Ultimately, everyone is forced to grow up, accept life's harsh realities, and make difficult choices. None of the characters is recognizable as the person they once were, but it is a moral improvement for each of them. Family & Friends is - in truth - an all American tale, and the theme is socially relevant to the times. The family relationships ...

Welcome To The Jetsons Future: The Era Of Media Convergence by Steve Hoffman 4.8 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified 13 hours ago

The future of the media and entertainment businesses looks suspiciously like the 25-year cartoon series The Jetsons. Giant screens inhabit every room in our homes. Smaller screens sit in our hands (in the form of tablets), in our pockets (on our cell phones), in our connected dashboards, and they're moving on to our wrists (and other body parts). We watch "television" and "movies", listen to "radio" and read "newspapers" and magazines" on those screens. How does your content - the great entertainment you create - get to those screens? In The Jetsons Future, content will be delivered by what we now call broadband internet. We are moving from the era of broadcast to the era of broadband. Oh, and when the delivery system changes, the content that gets delivered necessarily changes too. (That's what Marshall McLuhan meant when he said, "The medium is the message.") In The Jetsons Future, all our traditional forms of entertainment - TV and movies, radio, music, print - are all combining into one giant blob we call "media". Here's the exciting part: with these changes come opportunities. Lot's of 'em! People and huge companies are doing what they love - and making money at it - in ways that were impossible not so long ago. Of course, there's a lot of creative destruction in there too. Not many people have been responsible for the content that's created by large media businesses and also worked as a practicing attorney. I have, and this is my unique perspective on where the opportunities - and challenges - are biggest in our future, The Jetsons Future! (Please note that this book expresses only my opinions. Neither Hanna-Barbera Productions, Inc. nor Warner Brothers, Inc. endorses, sponsors, or is any way connected to this book.)

Abstract Paintings by Steven Yessick 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 12 hours ago

Just try this amazing, colorful, and brilliant Abstract Paintings book which is an extensive collection of nearly every oil and acrylic painting that I have completed during my entire painting career as of yet. Covering many styles such as abstraction, surrealism, and figurative work, I basically touched on a number of key ideas and facets intertwined with various styles and time periods of art. My paintings are unique to my own style, as well as with each piece being unique in itself. Inspiration came from abstract expressionism, surrealism, and cubism at times, among a few other things that I picked up along the way. It is a comprehensive volume of work, all compressed into a single unified visual display. Over the course of two decades, I pursued oil painting with the highest degree of interest and involvement, while also living my life to the fullest extent humanly imaginable. Some of the newer pieces are in the front of the book. All of the old pieces are also in this book, as well as many early pieces which have never yet been published anywhere. There are no words in the book, because I feel that words would detract from the art. I simply wanted the art to speak for itself. At one point, I developed a unique style for creating paintings called Systemic Hard Edge Abstraction. I approached the design of each painting with a design method that I considered in an almost scientific way. I kept a running list of shape combinations that I later translated into oil paintings, thus creating an abstraction that utilized the best of my drawings over a period of time. Most of the drawings I used to design these paintings with were drawn at live music performances in Nashville. While I was there, I experienced many, many amazing music performances, in a place where musicians who come there attempt to do their absolute best live musical shows. The forms and designs of the Systemic Hard Edge Abstraction pieces involve a bright and colorful dynamic, with judiciously ...

Intentions by Oscar Wilde (E-BOOKARAMA) 3.9 Stars (41 Reviews)    Price verified 18 hours ago

"Intentions" is a groundbreaking work of criticism, in four parts, by the inimitable Oscar Wilde. It was originally published in 1891 when Wilde was at the height of his form. These brilliant essays on art, literature, criticism, and society display the flamboyant poseur's famous wit and wide learning. A leading spokesman for the English Aesthetic movement, Wilde promoted "art for art's sake" against critics who argued that art must serve a moral purpose. On every page of this collection the gifted literary stylist admirably demonstrates not only that the characteristics of art are "distinction, charm, beauty, and imaginative power," but also that criticism itself can be raised to an art form possessing these very qualities.

The Total Work of Art in European Modernism (Signale: Modern German Letters, Cultures, and Thought) by David Roberts (Cornell University Press and Cornell University Library) Price verified one day ago

In this groundbreaking book David Roberts sets out to demonstrate the centrality of the total work of art to European modernism since the French Revolution. The total work of art is usually understood as the intention to reunite the arts into the one integrated whole, but it is also tied from the beginning to the desire to recover and renew the public function of art. The synthesis of the arts in the service of social and cultural regeneration was a particularly German dream, which made Wagner and Nietzsche the other center of aesthetic modernism alongside Baudelaire and Mallarmé. The history and theory of the total work of art pose a whole series of questions not only to aesthetic modernism and its utopias but also to the whole epoch from the French Revolution to the totalitarian revolutions of the twentieth century. The total work of art indicates the need to revisit key assumptions of modernism, such as the foregrounding of the autonomy and separation of the arts at the expense of the countertendencies to the reunion of the arts, and cuts across the neat equation of avant-gardism with progress and deconstructs the familiar left-right divide between revolution and reaction, the modern and the antimodern. Situated at the interface between art, religion, and politics, the total work of art invites us to rethink the relationship between art and religion and art and politics in European modernism. In a major departure from the existing literature David Roberts argues for twin lineages of the total work, a French revolutionary and a German aesthetic, which interrelate across the whole epoch of European modernism, culminating in the aesthetic and political radicalism of the avant-garde movements in response to the crisis of autonomous art and the accelerating political crisis of European societies from the 1890s forward.

DIGITAL ART volumes are series of original digital creations by Stephen C. Rose published in groups of 50 and made available to all for whatever use they wish to make of them with no restrictions whatsoever. Visual art is in the eye. Digital art is real. Its particular qualities enable envisioning many iterations in a single work These can aid meditative thinking. They can be returned to with profit. Some works will change before your eyes, Some of the images in this volume are aphorisms. All are made with free software, most commonly the remarkable IrfanView. Please address any inquiries to steveroseATgmail.com I would love to know of anything you create from these. Digital Art is the Aesthetic expression of Triadic Philosophy. Works are created by a form of play with images until something speaks truth and beauty fused. The work is then published. As everything evolves, Digital Art is continually subject to reiteration by me and anyone else who happens on it. Aesthetics is the third in the three step thought process advocated by Triadic Philosophy - Reality, Ethics, Aesthetics. I am in the process of placing all of my work in the three categories of content that represent my thnking: Abba's Way, Triadic Philosophy, and Cybercommunities. These correspond to the root triad Reality, Ethics, Aesthetics. Digital Art is thus a primitive form of gift in the cyber age, offered as a sharing of self as related to all selves.

Guitar Works Volume Seven: The Scrap Wood Build by Geo Dell (Dell Sweet) 3.3 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

The Scrap Wood build is exactly as it sounds. It is a slim bodied electric guitar built from scrap wood. I went further than that and carried the idea of conservation through the build by using all recycled parts with the exception of new pots in the wiring harness. This build starts with rough-sawn, recycled timbers; the glue up to provide the necessary width. Rough-cutting and shaping the body: Routing for a loaded pickguard; mating a re-purposed neck to the body as a glue-in neck. Fretboard work, wiring, shaping, sanding, electronics and final sanding, prepping, staining and finishing round out this project. Start to finished project fully photographed. The resulting guitar, a short scale slim bodied electric, is not only unique but very playable and something you can be proud of finishing and playing.

A pilgrimage of contention through a politically vibrant age of revolution--this book provides a stunning exploration of the secret number '26' and rebus picture words in relation to the 15th century "Ellesmere Manuscript,' the most famous version of Geoffrey Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales.' Leonardo Da Vinci almost certainly would have heard of Geoffrey Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales'--and this book explains how these two scientists had a lot more in common than you might think. Had there been rebus picture word puzzles in the artwork related to 'Canterbury Tales'? This book explores the concept of that pilgrimage within the context of artwork related to the Philosophers' Stone. Step aboard the enchanted mystery ship for a journey through the basics of the Philosophers' Stone. Utilizing an extravaganza of vibrant illustrations from history's most eminent artists, this book first highlights the fine points of the fundamentals and then acquaints the readers with the history and overall canons of the Philosophers' Stone. The readers embark upon a tour through widely varying perspectives on the concept of the age-old pilgrimage. Readers will then explore the intricacies of the Art of alchemy, but what is even more important--by carefully piecing together the scattered clues, they will be brought nearer to the closely guarded message hidden deep inside the deliberately obscured texts. There is a message hidden in the picture word puzzles. Only this author exposes the true intent of the ancient alchemists, fishing out the actual concealed message from the muddy pond of hints and innuendo. The Art had been used for a very specific purpose -- and readers are guaranteed to be surprised with the deciphered end result. This book is a fast paced thriller that decrypts real clues in the artwork and riddles of the Masters. Upending the apple cart on what should be found within the alchemy riddles, the author has ferreted the secret message out from the picture word puzzles. The ...

Posing Guide for Models and Photographers - Volume 3 - Featuring Trish (Posing Guides) by Paul Moore 3.0 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

These posing guides were created to make available to both photographers and models an inexpensive guide to posing and are priced as low as the publisher will allow. They are not intended to be a definitive work on posing. Nor are they attempting to define the only way posing can be approached. All models are unique and bring their own style and personality to the image. The accomplished photographer recognizes this and tries to emphasize the individual characteristic that each model presents. Photography is a visual medium. The photographer must learn to see what presents itself in the viewfinder. Although much can be explained in writing much more can be gleaned by presenting the work in a visual format. It is much easier to show a model or photographer what you are looking for than trying to communicate it by other means. That is why there is such a heavy emphasis on imagery in these books. I hope you enjoy them and that they are useful in your work. More than 70 color pictures in this work. The artist that created this work (the author) has been a photographer for more than 40 years and has had thousands of his photographs published worldwide.

Is theirs a match made in heaven... or hell? Nick Channing, drummer for Fully Automatic, has never taken relationships seriously. He's had fun and met dozens of women -- mostly one-night stands -- and he prefers it that way. From his parents to his friends, he's witnessed love and relationships firsthand and believes women are nothing but a headache. Nick, Brad, and Val team up again to launch her new band Val Hella. There's one problem, though: they still need a bassist. They audition dozens of women, trying to find the perfect one and settle on Sabrina, known onstage simply as Sinna, a bad ass metal head who's perfect for the band: pierced, tattooed, dressed in black from head to toe, and she handles her bass with precision. She is a force to be reckoned with and Nick is smitten. When Nick gets her alone the first time to lay on the charm, he's met with a coolness he's never experienced. Sabrina is mysterious and thoroughly unimpressed with Nick and his behavior, and that's when he decides he has to have her. As he falls headlong for her, he discovers her secrets, one dark shadow at a time. He thinks she loves him back, but he can't be sure. By the time he's completely down the rabbit hole, his heart's so entangled, he fears he might not be able to save himself. Can she save him or will she wreck him for all time? Solace + Yearning – Poetry and Dance of Belonging: A Community Arts Project from Denmark, Western Australia by Nicola-Jane le Breton (Vivid Publishing) Price verified one day ago

'Solace + Yearning' layers landscape, poetry, eco-art and contemporary dance to create an immersive space for many voices: yearning to connect to country, grief for what is absent, and reaching towards an understanding of indigenous language and culture. "Along the edges, voices call softly, softly... the past speaking to the present." This multi-arts collaboration explores 'settler guilt' and 'solastalgia' -- a sense of loss caused by environmental change -- in a small rural community. The work unravels contradictory and complicated feelings about Australia's stories, the assumed advantage of non-indigenous Australians, and yet our deep longing for the wisdom and connection intrinsic in indigenous cultures. "It is beneath the bark where stories are whispered and life rises to stitch together this river with this sky." Performed in Denmark, Western Australia in 2012, and again as a solo performance by Annette Carmichael in 2014, these images and reflections portray a complex relationship between people and place. "Sometimes, sometimes I make the mistake of thinking that what has not been written down has been forgotten." With gratitude to Joey Williams, Wayne Webb, Toni Webb, and Harley Coyne, who walked the trail with us and generously shared their Noongar culture and stories.

Vatsalya : Rangolis with Love by Mahalakshmy Manoj Nair (Notion Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 12 hours ago

V?tsalya is a selection of handpicked designs from the author's collection of rangolis, which she has created over a period of time. They have been made with great love, care and attention to details for special occasions like the birthdays of family members, anniversaries, festivals like Diwali, Dussehra, New Year, etc. They take hours, and in some cases, days to make and is a process the author terms 'immensely enjoyable'. However, since the lives of these rangolis are very short, this book is created to give longevity to these designs, and in that process, be used as a coffee table book, adding aesthetic value to the décor of the place or perhaps inspire other artists in any way possible. Featured in this book are mostly freehand rangolis along with some traditional kolams with a twist, galicha (carpet) rangoli design, portrait rangoli and pookalam. This book is intended for aesthetic use, and this is not a rangoli tutorial book.

In Defense of Papyrus: Avatar Uses the World’s Second-Most-Hated Font to Signal the Downfall of Civilization (Short Read) by David Kadavy 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 12 hours ago

In 2009, director James Cameron set the typography world on fire, by using the Papyrus font for the logo of his movie, Avatar. Type snobs the world over were outraged. Even Ryan Gosling spoke out about the issue, through a hilarious (and horrifying) SNL skit. Why would a movie with a $280 million budget not only use a font that ships free on nearly every computer on the planet - but that also happens to be the world's second-most-hated font? For a decade, nobody could make sense of it. Until now. In In Defense of Papyrus, former type snob and design commentator David Kadavy (author of Design for Hackers) finally formulates a coherent explanation of why the Papyrus font was used in the international blockbuster, Avatar. For the first time ever, Kadavy breaks down why type snobs hate Papyrus. You'll be shocked to learn about Papyrus's deceptively solid fundamentals. You'll be dismayed to find out Papyrus's one, giant, shortcoming. Your sense of reality will be shattered as you discover how that one shortcoming is exactly what makes James Cameron's choice of Papyrus one of the most briliant font choices of the century. Download now, and read this short read on the comfort of your favorite e-reader. That is, if civilization doesn't collapse first.

Middlemarch by George Eliot (Pandora's Box Classics) 4.1 Stars (9 Reviews)    Price verified 22 hours ago

By the time the novel appeared to tremendous popular and critical acclaim in 1871-2, George Eliot was recognized as England's finest living novelist. It was her ambition to create a world and portray a whole community--tradespeople, middle classes, country gentry--in the rising provincial town of Middlemarch, circa 1830. Vast and crowded, rich in narrative irony and suspense, «Middlemarch» is richer still in character, in its sense of how individual destinies are shaped by and shape the community, and in the great art that enlarges the reader's sympathy and imagination. It is truly, as Virginia Woolf famously remarked, 'one of the few English novels written for grown-up people'. "One of the few English novels written for grown-up people." -- Virginia Woolf "What do I think of 'Middlemarch'? What do I think of glory -- except that in a few instances this 'mortal has already put on immortality.' George Eliot was one. The mysteries of human nature surpass the 'mysteries of redemption,' for the infinite we only suppose, while we see the finite." -- Emily Dickinson "'Middlemarch' is probably the greatest English novel." -- Julian Barnes "They've [women] produced the greatest writer in the English language ever, George Eliot, and arguably the third greatest, Jane Austen, and certainly the greatest novel, 'Middlemarch'... " -- Martin Amis

Uncage Eden: A Spiritual Philosophy Book about Food, Music, and the Rewilding of Society by DJ Rankin 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 12 hours ago

Our planet is in peril. Our species is in captivity. We alone hold the key. We have become disconnected from the love song of our living planet, and as a result, she has become severely out of balance as she spirals through her evolution. It is not beyond our power to regain a harmonious relationship with our plentiful Mother Earth, and as we reweave the web of symbiosis we were born with, humanity may once again experience a life without limitation. We are meant to be integral components of the wild, not slaves of the systematic destruction of it, and as the veil of our incarceration is lifted, we will rise to the occasion of tearing down the walls that contain us. This is the story of one water protector's path to understanding, his struggle to find what it means to live in a good way, and the incredible world that his adventure reveals along the journey. From Rattlesnakes to frybread to space dust to space funk, the music of the universe has a most compelling story to share, and as we ride the wave of this fundamental vibration, we become enlightened to the astounding complexity of creation. We are the dreamers, we are the creators, we have the ability to manifest our own reality as we travel throughout this material existence, and it is up to us to believe in the abundance of tomorrow. We have become lost in a cloud of fear, as we insist on imagining the worst possible outcomes for our children's future. The powers-that-be are attempting to subdue our awakening, but we are emerging from this nightmare, and rediscovering the true nature of the spirit within. Life is meant to be lived, every moment is meant to be cherished, and you are meant to be you. The language of human supremacy has convinced us that we are powerless, but we alone hold the key to unlocking the cages of our planet, and as we shed this illusion of scarcity, the magic of the garden will once again be free to bloom. And we're gonna make the best late night snacks.

Venator L'Incubo dell'Inferno-The Nightmare of demons: English and Italian version (Italian Edition) by Nunzia Alemanno 4.3 Stars (29 Reviews)    Price verified 22 hours ago

In questo ebook sono presenti due versioni: quella Inglese Venator - The Nightmare of Demons, e quella Italiana Venator - L'Incubo dell'Inferno. ??????In this ebook there are two versions: the English version "Venator - The Nightmare of Demons", and the Italian version "Venator - L'Incubo dell'Inferno". Demon hunters have been the subject of tales, fairy tales, and fantastic genre books on various occasions, and have been protagonists of horror or fantasy cinema. But it never occurred to anyone that they could really exist in our world, and closer than we could imagine. The Venatorius Order is the concrete proof of the existence of an unimaginable reality, as hidden as the Order itself, as concrete as the water of the oceans and the moonlight reflected in it. Just the moon, the inspiring muse of poets and writers, a luminous lighthouse in the dark nights, will return to ...

Risen Light Nature Photography of Country Living by Christopher Shea 3.1 Stars (14 Reviews)    Price verified 12 hours ago

Over the years I have held a certain vision for the look and feel of my photography. I want it to have a soft warm look, balanced with a contrast of highlights and shadows. The soft warm light I am looking for can be seen very early in the morning as the sun is just beginning to rise. To accomplish this, I stay away from artificial flash and use natural light. Many of my pictures are not what you would see in nature and wildlife magazines. This is because they are just a little on the artistic side and slightly away from the technical, brightly lit photography that you see in some magazines and reference books. The best way to accomplish this warm look is to shoot just as the morning sun is breaking over the horizon. There is a very small window of morning light that gives everything that soft warm look and feel. This can make it very difficult to photograph wildlife. It took me several months to get pictures of wood ducks because they kept arriving to the pond after that small window of time. But eventually my patience paid off and I got the shot. That is one of the reasons our books are titled "Risen Light." The other reason for the title is that through my photography, Donna's writing, and our lives, we give honor, praise, and glory to Jesus, the true Risen Light. The photographs are accompanied by scripture from the Bible. We did this because the Bible contains the very words of life, and that alone is more important than anything in this world. If the scriptures we have selected can help you to understand, just a little bit, who God is and the love that he has for us, then Donna and I have accomplished our purpose. These books are one of the ways we share the word of God with those who are looking. As you turn each page and view the pictures and read the words, I hope that you will get a glimpse of the natural beauty of creation that has captivated us. God has put everything together in just such a way that when we see nature, we just know there is a ...

More Storage More Problems: Easy steps to manage your flood of digital photos by Sabrina Hughes 4.8 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified 18 hours ago

Most photos we take today are born digital -- in other words, they are created by a digital camera or camera phone and only exist in a digital format. In the recent past, we photographers tended to limit our shots since we may have only had one roll of film on us at any given time. However, now that we are shooting almost exclusively on digital media (with seemingly limitless storage), we are overwhelmed by thousands of pictures, sometimes forgotten on our phone or memory cards. Just because we can keep all those photos doesn't meant that we should. In fact, just because they are digital doesn't mean that all those photos are being stored! Digital files promise convenience and instant accessibility, but they still need to be organized and archived just as prints would! Keeping up with the seemingly endless flood of digital photos from our phones, cameras, tablets, and other devices can be daunting. In this book, I outline simple steps that, when followed regularly, will help you manage your digital images regardless of how many devices you use to take pictures. When you've followed these steps, your digital photo files will be tidy and navigable!

The Rights of Man by Thomas Paine (Green World Classics) 4.7 Stars (250 Reviews)    Price verified 12 hours ago

One of the most influential writers and reformers of his age, Thomas Paine successfully publicized the issues of his time in pamphlets that clearly and persuasively argued for political independence and social reform. Rights of Man, his greatest and most widely read work, is considered a classic statement of faith in democracy and egalitarianism. The first part of this document, dedicated to George Washington, appeared in 1791. Defending the early events of the French Revolution, it spoke on behalf of democracy, equality, and a new European order. Part Two, which appeared the following year, is perhaps Paine's finest example of political pamphleteering and an exemplary work that supported social security for workers, public employment for those in need of work, abolition of laws limiting wages, and other social reforms. Written in the language of common speech, Rights of Man was a sensation in the United States, defended by many who agreed with Paine's defense of republican government; but in Britain, it was labeled by Parliament as highly seditious, causing the government to suppress it and prosecute the British-born Paine for treason. Regarded by historian E. P. Thompson as the "foundation-text for the English working-class movement," this much-read and much-studied book remains an inspiring, rational work that paved the way for the growth and development of radical traditions in American and British society.

Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe (Green World Classics) 3.9 Stars (325 Reviews)    Price verified 12 hours ago

Born in Newgate prison and abandoned six months later, Moll's drive to find and hold on to a secure place in society propels her through incest, adultery, bigamy, prostitution and a resourceful career as a thief ('the greatest Artist of my time') before she is apprehended and returned to Newgate. If Moll Flanders is on one level a Puritan's tale of sin and repentance, through self-made, self-reliant Moll its rich subtext conveys all the paradoxes and amoralities of the struggle for property and power in Defoe's newly individualistic society.

Architects of Buddhist Leisure: Socially Disengaged Buddhism in Asia’s Museums, Monuments, and Amusement Parks (Contemporary Buddhism) by Justin Thomas McDaniel (University of Hawaii Press) Price verified 18 hours ago

Buddhism, often described as an austere religion that condemns desire, promotes denial, and idealizes the contemplative life, actually has a thriving leisure culture in Asia. Creative religious improvisations designed by Buddhists have been produced both within and outside of monasteries across the region -- in Nepal, Japan, Korea, Macau, Hong Kong, Singapore, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. Justin McDaniel looks at the growth of Asia's culture of Buddhist leisure -- what he calls "socially disengaged Buddhism" -- through a study of architects responsible for monuments, museums, amusement parks, and other sites. In conversation with noted theorists of material and visual culture and anthropologists of art, McDaniel argues that such sites highlight the importance of public, leisure, and spectacle culture from a Buddhist perspective and illustrate how "secular" and "religious," "public" and "private," are in many ways false binaries. Moreover, places like Lek Wiriyaphan's Sanctuary of Truth in Thailand, Su?i Tiên Amusement Park in Saigon, and Shi Fa Zhao's multilevel museum/ritual space/tea house in Singapore reflect a growing Buddhist ecumenism built through repetitive affective encounters instead of didactic sermons and sectarian developments. They present different Buddhist traditions, images, and aesthetic expressions as united but not uniform, collected but not concise: Together they form a gathering, not a movement. Despite the ingenuity of lay and ordained visionaries like Wiriyaphan and Zhao and their colleagues Kenzo Tange, Chan-soo Park, Tadao Ando, and others discussed in this book, creators of Buddhist leisure sites often face problems along the way. Parks and museums are complex adaptive systems that are changed and influenced by budgets, available materials, local and global economic conditions, and visitors. Architects must often compromise and settle at local optima, and no matter what they intend, their buildings will develop lives of their own. ...

At publication date, a free ebook version of this title will be available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Renaissance Futurities considers the intersections between artistic rebirth, the new science, and European imperialism in the global early modern world. Charlene Villaseñor Black and Mari-Tere Álvarez take as inspiration the work of Renaissance genius Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), prolific artist and inventor, and other polymaths such as philosopher Giulio "Delminio" Camillo (1480-1544), physician and naturalist Francisco Hernández de Toledo (1514-1587), and writer Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616). This concern with futurity is inspired by the Renaissance itself, a period defined by visions of the future, as well as by recent theorizing of temporality in Renaissance and Queer Studies. This transdisciplinary volume is at the cutting edge of the humanities, medical humanities, scientific discovery, and avant-garde artistic expression.

Go Metro, Los Angeles! by Huzail Hassan Price verified 20 hours ago

Before you ask, yes, Los Angeles HAS transit options. But let me clarify it even further for you. The area has AMAZING transit options. However, not many would think that, believing the only way to survive in the city is to purchase a car. This is due to the massive freeway construction in the mid-1900s, plaguing the city since with false perceptions and traffic. Los Angeles got its start with connecting railroads. Then a man named Henry Huntington came around and sprouted suburbanization with the Pacific Electric. At its peak, it had over a thousand miles, which is even more than the current NYC subway system! However, due to foreseen circumstances, the system shut down in favor of freeway construction. But then it came back! Metro and Metrolink dominate any system in America with its relatively new infrastructure. However, ridership is quite low, which is why more need to discover this hidden gem in Los Angeles and its history, along with reasons why public transit is superior. This book isn't inclusive to Los Angeles, however. This book takes examples of stories from other cities in the world dealing with planning problems, doubling as reasons why public transit is the clear winner of the fight for more efficient lives. After immersing yourself in this perception changing book, you'll soon realize why more transit supporters are needed and how Los Angeles sets an example in transit.

Playwright and screenwriter Joshua James has gathered thirty monologues for women, collected from his plays 2 VERY DANGEROUS PEOPLE SHARING 1 SMALL SPACE, RUNNING IN PLACE, OLD DOG and many more... for actors for auditions, students for class study and for solo performances. "Joshua James' work is bold, intelligent and subversive. Read it. Then find a way to make it happen on stage. American theater is clogged with the paltry visions of the privileged class, which assure us that the world we live in does not need immediate and radical change. James' work pulls the plug on sentimentality and comfort on stage. His work is at times dark, disturbing, but always arresting and shot through with a fine sense of humour." - Obie-award winning playwright Naomi Wallace
