ONLINE TEACHING SURVIVAL GUIDE: TECHNOLOGIES, MEDIA TOOLS, LEADERSHIP, AND MUCH MORE.INCLUDING TIPS TO MOTIVATE STUDENTS TO FOLLOW THE LESSONS. by JOY K. COURAGE 4.7 Stars (15 Reviews)    Price verified 12 hours ago

Online Teaching Survival Guide by Joy Courage, the same author who wrote: Google Classroom. The complete guide to create virtual classes and tips for making lessons interesting. Including a focus on students' view. Are you looking for a guide to help you teach online effectively and preserving your leadership? If yes, this is the right book for you! Online teaching is different in many ways from teaching in a traditional classroom. Education will need to be more interactive. You always have to remember that you are not sitting next to the student in the same room but face to face on a computer. A high level of interaction is often needed to maintain your student's attention and to keep things flowing in your classroom. Ask higher order thinking questions throughout the lesson can be a useful form of interaction, but it also helps you to see if the student understands what is taught. With online teaching, the interaction must not be at a monotone voice level. Having a monotone voice will not keep the student active and interested. A way to keep things interesting for the student is by speaking in different voice pitches or tones. These things can be modified based on your students' age groups. A great online teacher should be happy. A student can sense if the teacher is not happy about the class or seeing them. A happy teacher will create a happy, friendly atmosphere for learning. As the educator, you may instruct in the classroom by using a particular classroom platform provided by the company you work for, or Skype, Zoom, Google Classroom, and other online interfaces. This book covers: • How To Organize The Course • Leadership In Teaching • Knowledge of the Subject and Attitude to Keep • The Necessary Tools • The Best Platforms And Software ... And Much More! Let's begin this journey through online teaching to start or improve it. Click here to buy the book!

2018 Franklin SAT Word List With 4058 SAT Words for High SAT Score by Franklin Vocab Builder (Franklin Vocab System) 2.8 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 14 hours ago

SAT Words with Memorable Sentence Fragments This SAT Prep Book contains all the 4058 words, meanings, and for most words, memorable sentence fragments, which makes it easy for you to memorize the SAT words for your high SAT score. The words are given in bold (example, the words belabor and buttress below). The meaning is given after the equal sign (=) following a word. The words are not necessarily in alphabetical order. We have used the US spellings. The British spelling of a word, when different from the US spelling, is given in bracket after BRITISH as shown for the word belabor below. USE gives a sentence fragment carefully chosen for memory. When no sentence fragment is given, a * is shown as in the word buttress below. belabor (BRITISH = belabour) = to assail verbally, to insist repeatedly or harp on USE = belabor a point buttress = support USE = * Why is vocabulary so very important on the SAT test? Vocab is so important for the SAT test because, for most people, it is more difficult to memorize vocabulary than to improve math skills. So if you can memorize the required SAT words (which others find difficult) you can get high SAT score. Borrow It (free) Money Back Guarantee You can borrow it free (if you are a member of Amazon Prime). Or, better yet, buy it now because it is really good and because it is offered with 100% money back guarantee.

Goo Goo Gaga: A Guide to Communicate with Your Baby (includes a Workbook) by Miguel A. Calles 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 12 hours ago

From a parent of twins: This book is written with seven concise guidelines for communicating with your baby and establishing a strong relationship. As a bonus, this book contains a workbook to start applying these seven guidelines. Your baby was born after having listened to you for nine months while still in the womb. She knows your voice and has already established a relationship with you. She has to learn to communicate with you, and she must learn this brand new environment--which can be cold, dark, and scary at times. Your responsibility as the parent is to leverage the trust she has from your words and to mentor her in her new career as a person. As a parent of twin toddlers, at the time of this writing, I understand how little me-time is available. I know leisurely reading may be difficult to start, let alone reading for educational purposes. I empathize with your current parenting situation or the one you will soon start. This book is intentionally written to be short and to the point so you may start "doing" rather than just "reading."

Advancing Environmental Education Practice (Cornell Series in Environmental Education) by Marianne E. Krasny (Comstock Publishing Associates) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 12 hours ago

In this important intervention, change-agent Marianne E. Krasny challenges the knowledge-attitudes-behavior pathway that underpins much of environmental education practice; i.e., the assumption that environmental knowledge and attitudes lead to environmental behaviors. Krasny shows that certain types of knowledge are more likely than others to influence behaviors, and that generally it is more effective to work with existing attitudes than to try to change them. The chapters expand the purview of potential outcomes of environmental education beyond knowledge and attitudes to include nature connectedness, sense of place, efficacy, identity, norms, social capital, youth assets, and individual wellbeing. Advancing Environmental Education Practice also shows how, by constructing theories of change for their environmental education programs, environmental educators can target specific intermediate outcomes likely to lead to environmental behaviors and collective action, and plan activities to achieve those intermediate outcomes. In some cases, directly engaging program participants in the desired behavior or collective action can lead to changes in efficacy, sense of place, and other intermediate outcomes, which in turn foster future environmental actions. Finally, Advancing Environmental Education Practice shares twenty-four surveys that assess changes in environmental behaviors and intermediate outcomes, and provides guidelines for qualitative evaluations. Thanks to generous funding from the Cornell Department of Natural Resources, the ebook editions of this book are available as Open Access volumes from Cornell Open (cornellopen.org) and other Open Access repositories.

Education and Development in Colonial and Postcolonial Africa: Policies, Paradigms, and Entanglements, 1890s–1980s (Global Histories of Education) by Damiano Matasci (Palgrave Macmillan) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 8 hours ago

This open access edited volume offers an analysis of the entangled histories of education and development in twentieth-century Africa. It deals with the plurality of actors that competed and collaborated to formulate educational and developmental paradigms and projects: debating their utility and purpose, pondering their necessity and risk, and evaluating their intended and unintended consequences in colonial and postcolonial moments. Since the late nineteenth century, the "educability" of the native was the subject of several debates and experiments: numerous voices, arguments, and agendas emerged, involving multiple institutions and experts, governmental and non-governmental, religious and laic, operating from the corridors of international organizations to the towns and rural villages of Africa. This plurality of expressions of political, social, cultural, and economic imagination of education and development is at the core of this collective work.

Teacher Quality, Instructional Quality and Student Outcomes: Relationships Across Countries, Cohorts and Time (IEA Research for Education Book 2) by Trude Nilsen (Springer) 3.3 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

This volume offers insights from modeling relations between teacher quality, instructional quality and student outcomes in mathematics across countries. The relations explored take the educational context, such as school climate, into account. The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement's Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is the only international large-scale study possessing a design framework that enables investigation of relations between teachers, their teaching, and student outcomes in mathematics. TIMSS provides both student achievement data and contextual background data from schools, teachers, students and parents, for over 60 countries. This book makes a major contribution to the field of educational effectiveness, especially teaching effectiveness, where cross-cultural comparisons are scarce. For readers interested in teacher quality, instructional quality, and student achievement and motivation in mathematics, the comparisons across cultures, grades, and time are insightful and thought-provoking. For readers interested in methodology, the advanced analytical methods, combined with application of methods new to educational research, illustrate interesting novel directions in methodology and the secondary analysis of international large-scale assessment (ILSA).

Audacious Education Purposes: How Governments Transform the Goals of Education Systems by Fernando M. Reimers (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 12 hours ago

This open access book offers a comparative study of eight ambitious national reforms that sought to create opportunities for students to gain the necessary breath of skills to thrive in a rapidly changing world. It examines how national governments transform education systems to provide students opportunities to develop such skills. It analyses comprehensive education reforms in Brazil, Finland, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Portugal and Russia and yields original and important insights on the process of educational change. The analysis of these 21st century skills reforms shows that reformers followed approaches which are based on the five perspectives: cultural, psychological, professional, institutional and political. Most reforms relied on institutional and political perspectives. They highlight the systemic nature of the process of educational change, and the need for alignment and coherence among the various elements of the system in order. They underscore the importance of addressing the interests of various stakeholders of the education system in obtaining the necessary impetus to initiate and sustain change. In contrast, as the book shows, the use of a cultural and psychological frame proved rarer, missing important opportunities to draw on systematic analysis of emerging demands for schools and on cognitive science to inform the changes in the organization of instruction. Drawing on a rich array of sources and evidence the book provides a careful account of how education reform works in practice.

Higher Education Reforms in Romania: Between the Bologna Process and National Challenges by Adrian Curaj (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 12 hours ago

Romania is an active player in various international higher education areas, while undergoing a series of higher education reforms within its national framework. The Higher Education Evidence Based Policy Making: a necessary premise for progress in Romania project was implemented by the Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Funding (UEFISCDI) in the timeframe February 2012 - February 2014, being co-financed by the European Social Fund through the Operational Programme "Administrative Capacity Development". The project aimed to increase the capacity of public administration for evidence-based policy making in the field of higher education, while focusing on good practices at international level and impact assessment. With the contribution of the national and international experts, the project has generated a number of analysis and studies on the existing higher education public policies (quality assurance, internationalisation, equity, data collection, the Bologna Process, financing of higher education). Based on the results of the project, the book will reunite a number of policy research articles which would tap into the innovative aspects of the project's activities and provide a concise overview of what good practices can be drawn from the empirical research conducted in this project. The book will therefore aim to improve the information on Romanian higher education reforms, as well as on the concrete evidence-based policy proposals which could be transformed into future policy solutions in the Romanian higher education system.

Mergers and Alliances in Higher Education: International Practice and Emerging Opportunities by Adrian Curaj (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 12 hours ago

This volume casts light on mergers and alliances in higher education by examining developments of this type in different countries. It combines the direct experiences of those at the heart of such transformations, university leaders and senior officials responsible for higher education policy, with expert analysts of the systems concerned. Higher education in Europe faces a series of major challenges. The economic crisis has accelerated expectations of an increased role in addressing economic and societal challenges while at the same time putting pressure on available finances. Broader trends such as shifting student demographics and expectations, globalisation and mobility and new ways of working with business have contributed to these increased pressures. In the light of these trends there have been moves, both from national or regional agencies and from individual institutions to respond by combining resources, either through collaborative arrangements or more fundamentally through mergers between two or more universities. After an introductory chapter by the editors which establishes the context for mergers and alliances, the book falls into two main parts. Part 1 takes a national or regional perspective to give some sense of the historical context, the wider drivers and the importance of these developments in these cases. Included are both systemic accounts (for countries as France, Sweden, Romania, Russia, Wales and England), and specific cross-cutting in itiatives including a major facility at Magurele in Romania and a Spanish programme for promoting international campuses of excellence. Part 2 is built from specific cases of universities, either in mergers or alliances, with examples from different countries (such as France, UK, Romania, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Switzerland). A concluding chapter by the editors assesses these experiences and indicates the implications and future needs for understanding in this domain.

Environmental Education in Indonesia: Creating Responsible Citizens in the Global South? (Routledge Explorations in Environmental Studies) by Lyn Parker 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

Indonesia's wealth of natural resources is being exploited at breakneck speed, and environmental awareness and knowledge among the populace is limited. This book examines how young people learn about the environment to see how education can help to develop environmental awareness and avert vast environmental destruction, not only in Indonesia, but also in the Global South more generally. Based on in-depth studies conducted in the cities of Yogyakarta and Surabaya, complemented with surveys of students in secondary schools, Environmental Education in Indonesia examines educational curricula, pedagogy and "green" activities to reveal what is currently being done in schools to educate children about the environment. The book investigates the shortcomings in environment education, including underqualified teachers, the civil service mentality, the still-pervasive chalk-and-talk pedagogy and the effect of the examination system. It also analyses the role of local government in supporting (or not) environmental education, and the contribution of environmental NGOs. The book establishes that young people are not currently being exposed to effective environmental education, and the authors propose that the best and most culturally appropriate way forward in Indonesia is to frame pro-environment behaviour and responsibility as a form of citizenship, and specifically that environmental education should be taught as a separate subject. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of contemporary Indonesia and Southeast Asia, education for sustainability and environmental education, as well as sustainability and sustainable development more generally. Nature Guiding by William Gould Vinal (Comstock Publishing Associates) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 12 hours ago

Nature Guiding is the science of inculcating nature enthusiasm, nature principles, and nature facts into the spirit of individuals. "Doing" nature-study means observing, wondering, and solving problems. It could include collecting, building, measuring, painting, planning, writing, touching, experimenting or any of a wide range of other activities. Most importantly, it allows children to be "original investigators." This book is intended as a resource for teachers and students engaged in nature study at summer camps and in schools. William Gould Vinal believed that the teacher of nature study should be "in sympathy with the simple life and the country way," that the nature study should emphasize observation of the interactions of plants and animals in their environment, and not be reduced to matters of taxonomy and anatomy. In Nature Guiding, he offers advice to camp counselors and school teachers on incorporating nature study into everyday activities, as well as suggestions for parents and others about using visits to state and national parks to teach nature lore.

The Cold War in the Classroom: International Perspectives on Textbooks and Memory Practices (Palgrave Studies in Educational Media) by Barbara Christophe (Palgrave Macmillan) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 8 hours ago

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book explores how the socially disputed period of the Cold War is remembered in today's history classroom. Applying a diverse set of methodological strategies, the authors map the dividing lines in and between memory cultures across the globe, paying special attention to the impact the crisis-driven age of our present has on images of the past. Authors analysing educational media point to ambivalence, vagueness and contradictions in textbook narratives understood to be echoes of societal and academic controversies. Others focus on teachers and the history classroom, showing how unresolved political issues create tensions in history education. They render visible how teachers struggle to handle these challenges by pretending that what they do is 'just history'. The contributions to this book unveil how teachers, backgrounding the political inherent in all memory practices, often nourish the illusion that the history in which they are engaged is all about addressing the past with a reflexive and disciplined approach.

Empowering Teachers to Build a Better World: How Six Nations Support Teachers for 21st Century Education (SpringerBriefs in Education) by Fernando M. Reimers (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 8 hours ago

This open access book presents a comparative study on how large-scale professional development programs for teachers are designed and implemented. Around the world, governments and educators are recognizing the need to educate students in a broad range of higher order cognitive skills and socio-emotional competencies, and providing effective opportunities for teachers to develop the expertise needed to teach these skills is a crucial aspect of effective implementation of curricula which include those goals. This study examines how large-scale efforts to empower teachers for deeper instruction have been designed, how they have been implemented, and their outcomes. To do so, it investigates six programs from England, Colombia, Mexico, India, and the United States. Though all six are intended to broaden and deepen students' curricular aspirations, each takes this expansion of curricular goals in a different direction. The ambitious education reforms studied here explicitly focus on building teachers' capacity to teach on a broader set of goals. Through a discerning analysis of program documents, evaluations, and interviews with senior leaders and participants in the programs, the book identifies the various theories of action used in these programs, examines how they were implemented, and discusses what they achieved. As such, it offers an indispensable resource for education leaders interested in designing and implementing professional development programs for teachers that are aligned with ambitious instructional goals.

Socioeconomic Inequality and Educational Outcomes: Evidence from Twenty Years of TIMSS (IEA Research for Education Book 5) by Markus Broer (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 8 hours ago

This open access book focuses on trends in educational inequality using twenty years of grade 8 student data collected from 13 education systems by the IEA's Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) between 1995 and 2015. While the overall positive association between family socioeconomic status (SES) and student achievement is well documented in the literature, the magnitude of this relationship is contingent on social contexts and is expected to vary by education system. Research on how such associations differ across societies and how the strength of these relationships has changed over time is limited. This study, therefore, addresses an important research and policy question by examining changes in the inequality of educational outcomes due to SES over this 20-year period, and also examines the extent to which the performance of students from disadvantaged backgrounds has improved over time in each education system. Education systems generally aim to narrow the achievement gap between low- and high-SES students and to improve the performance of disadvantaged students. However, the lack of quantifiable and comprehensible measures makes it difficult to assess and monitor the effect of such efforts. In this study, a novel measure of SES that is consistent across all TIMSS cycles allows students to be categorized into different socioeconomic groups. This measure of SES may also contribute to future research using TIMSS trend data. Readers will gain new insight into how educational inequality has changed in the education systems studied and how such change may relate to the more complex picture of macroeconomic changes in those societies.

Teaching Tolerance in a Globalized World (IEA Research for Education Book 4) by Andrés Sandoval-Hernández (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 12 hours ago

This open access thematic report identifies factors and conditions that can help schools and education systems promote tolerance in a globalized world. The IEA's International Civic and Citizenship Study (ICCS) is a comparative research program designed to investigate the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens, and provides a wealth of data permitting not only comparison between countries but also comparisons between schools within countries, and students within countries. Advanced analytical methods provide insights into relationships between students' attitudes towards cultural diversity and the characteristics of the students themselves, their families, their teachers and school principals. The rich diversity of educational and cultural contexts in the 38 countries who participated in ICCS 2009 are also acknowledged and addressed. Readers interested in civic education and adolescents' attitudes towards cultural diversity will find the theoretical perspectives explored engaging. For readers interested in methodology, the advanced analytical methods employed present textbook examples of how to address cross-cultural comparability of measurement instruments and multilevel data structures in international large-scale assessments (ILSA). Meanwhile, those interested in educational policy should find the identification and comparison of malleable factors across education systems that contribute to positive student attitudes towards cultural diversity a useful and thought-provoking resource.

Handbook of Education Policy Studies: School/University, Curriculum, and Assessment, Volume 2 by Guorui Fan (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 12 hours ago

This open access handbook brings together the latest research from a wide range of internationally influential scholars to analyze educational policy research from international, historical and interdisciplinary perspectives. By effectively breaking through the boundaries between countries and disciplines, it presents new theories, techniques and methods for contemporary education policy, and illustrates the educational policies and educational reform practices that various countries have introduced to meet the challenges of continuous change. This volume focuses on policies and changes in schools and classrooms. The studies on school changes present the differences in the policies and challenges of K-12 schools and universities in different countries and regions, and in connection with the contradictions and conflicts between tradition and modernization, as well as the changing roles of various stakeholders, especially that of teachers. In terms of curriculum and instruction, many countries have undertaken experiments and introduced changes based on two major themes: "what to teach" and "how to teach". International education assessments represented by PISA not only promote the improvement and extensive application of educational assessment and testing techniques, but have also had far-reaching impacts on education policies and education reforms in many countries. Focusing on the changes in educational policies at the micro level, this volume comprehensively reveals the complex interactions between school organizations, teachers, curricula, teaching and learning, evaluation and other elements within the education system, as well as the latest related reforms worldwide.

Student Misconceptions and Errors in Physics and Mathematics: Exploring Data from TIMSS and TIMSS Advanced (IEA Research for Education Book 9) by Teresa Neidorf (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 12 hours ago

This open access report explores the nature and extent of students' misconceptions and misunderstandings related to core concepts in physics and mathematics and physics across grades four, eight and 12. Twenty years of data from the IEA's Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and TIMSS Advanced assessments are analyzed, specifically for five countries (Italy, Norway, Russian Federation, Slovenia, and the United States) who participated in all or almost all TIMSS and TIMSS Advanced assessments between 1995 and 2015. The report focuses on students' understandings related to gravitational force in physics and linear equations in mathematics. It identifies some specific misconceptions, errors, and misunderstandings demonstrated by the TIMSS Advanced grade 12 students for these core concepts, and shows how these can be traced back to poor foundational development of these concepts in earlier grades. Patterns in misconceptions and misunderstandings are reported by grade, country, and gender. In addition, specific misconceptions and misunderstandings are tracked over time, using trend items administered in multiple assessment cycles. The study and associated methodology may enable education systems to help identify specific needs in the curriculum, improve inform instruction across grades and also raise possibilities for future TIMSS assessment design and reporting that may provide more diagnostic outcomes.

Preparing for Life in a Digital Age: The IEA International Computer and Information Literacy Study International Report by Julian Fraillon (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 9 hours ago

Ability to use information and communication technologies (ICT) is an imperative for effective participation in today's digital age. Schools worldwide are responding to the need to provide young people with that ability. But how effective are they in this regard? The IEA International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) responded to this question by studying the extent to which young people have developed computer and information literacy (CIL), which is defined as the ability to use computers to investigate, create and communicate with others at home, school, the workplace and in society. The study was conducted under the auspices of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) and builds on a series of earlier IEA studies focusing on ICT in education. Data were gathered from almost 60,000 Grade 8 students in more than 3,300 schools from 21 education systems. This information was augmented by data from almost 35,000 teachers in those schools and by contextual data collected from school ICT-coordinators, school principals and the ICILS national research centers. The IEA ICILS team systematically investigated differences among the participating countries in students' CIL outcomes, how participating countries were providing CIL-related education and how confident teachers were in using ICT in their pedagogical practice. The team also explored differences within and across countries with respect to relationships between CIL education outcomes and student characteristics and school contexts. In general, the study findings presented in this international report challenge the notion of young people as "digital natives" with a self-developed capacity to use digital technology. The large variations in CIL proficiency within and across the ICILS countries suggest it is naive to expect young people to develop CIL in the absence of coherent learning programs. Findings also indicate that system- and school-level planning ...

Early Childhood Policies and Systems in Eight Countries: Findings from IEA's Early Childhood Education Study by Tony Bertram (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 12 hours ago

This report provides an overview of policy strategies on early childhood education settings (from birth to primary schooling) in eight countries. Data were collected using a policy questionnaire addressed to and completed by the National Research Coordinator(s) (NRC) of Chile, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Italy, Poland, the Russian Federation and the United States. The countries that participated provide interesting illustrations of early childhood education policy in action in a range of diverse contexts. Analysis of the systemic and structural results of ECE policy at national and, where necessary, subnational levels, enables transnational comparisons in policy and systems. Key policy changes, both underway and planned, are documented. These data reveal key findings in each of the five policy areas as covered in the questionnaire and this report: public policy; delivery models and providers; participation and enrollment; quality assurance systems; and expectations for child outcomes. In particular, the study aims to provide meaningful information for countries, states and jurisdictions across the world in relation to early childhood education, mapping the systems, structures and user pathways in place, along with the perceptions of stakeholders about the system, its functioning and impact. This comprehensive assessment of the wider policy contexts and settings for early childhood education includes teacher/practitioner qualifications, pedagogy approaches, and opportunities for professional development. Such information will enable countries to review their early childhood education systems in an international context.

Global Perspectives on Recognising Non-formal and Informal Learning: Why Recognition Matters (Technical and Vocational Education and Training: ... by Madhu Singh (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 8 hours ago

This book deals with the relevance of recognition and validation of non-formal and informal learning education and training, the workplace and society. In an increasing number of countries, it is at the top of the policy and research agenda ranking among the possible ways to redress the glaring lack of relevant academic and vocational qualifications and to promote the development of competences and certification procedures which recognise different types of learning, including formal, non-formal and informal learning. The aim of the book is therefore to present and share experience, expertise and lessons in such a way that enables its effective and immediate use across the full spectrum of country contexts, whether in the developing or developed world. It examines the importance of meeting institutional and political requirements that give genuine value to the recognition of non-formal and informal learning; it shows why recognition is important and clarifies its usefulness and the role it serves in education, working life and voluntary work; it emphasises the importance of the coordination, interests, motivations, trust and acceptance by all stakeholders. The volume is also premised on an understanding of a learning society, in which all social and cultural groups, irrespective of gender, race, social class, ethnicity, mental health difficulties are entitled to quality learning throughout their lives. Overall the thrust is to see the importance of recognising non-formal and informal learning as part of the larger movement for re-directing education and training for change. This change is one that builds on an equitable society and economy and on sustainable development principles and values such as respect for others, respect for difference and diversity, exploration and dialogue.

Progress maps for the learning and development of children under the age of 6: A reference framework by SINEACE 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 6 hours ago

Children begin to learn before entering educational institutions. From birth they gradually develop the social-emotional, communicative, cognitive and motor skills and competencies which allow them to interact with others: to understand and communicate affection, needs, desires, ideas, emotions and thoughts; as well as to overcome everyday situations. The foundations for learning are laid in the first years of life and there are currently more than 200 million children under the age of 5 who cannot reach their developmental potential due to poverty, poor health, poor nutrition or lack of fundamental education during this important period. Early Childhood Development (ECD) is a progressive, multidimensional, integral and timely process that translates into the construction of increasingly complex abilities in navigating social networks and the interaction with the environment in order for children to fully exercise their rights. The meaningful interactions that children have with adults in quality environments play a central role in their development and learning. These caregivers are not only responsible for the feeding and resting of the child, but also provide an adequate environment for learning and development, and interpret their emotional state, helping them to regulate it; in this way, the development of trust, curiosity, purposefulness, and self-control, and the ability to relate, communicate and cooperate with others is allowed. Currently, worldwide efforts are being made to improve the quality of services for children under the age of 6, in order to provide comprehensive care and education that guarantees the right to an equitable education regardless of social, cultural or economic background. Current research agrees that a determining factor in the learning and development of the child is the adult who accompanies him and the understanding they have of the process of learning and development at this age. With this in mind, the National System of ...

A Direct Republic: The Null Hypothesis of Politics: (How to automate a legislature) by Donnie Gebert 3.5 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 13 hours ago

A direct republic is an organizational model utilizing select parts of a direct democracy and a constitutional republic. All members of a direct republic sign and agree the constitution/social contract. This contract states you will not engage in murder, rape, theft, and basic crimes against humanity. Once signed, the individual becomes their own representative and places social contributions directly into the funding pools for the social projects they approve of. All other laws are agreed to by adding modular pieces of law onto ones own palate of need. This means the legislature is assembled in a DIY or build-a-bear fashion. Executives are, de facto, the individuals in charge of the projects you fund. The judiciary is self directed and handled by contract. Cases are settled in the arbitration services selected by contract, not by mandated courts with centralized statutes.

The Dream Is Over: The Crisis of Clark Kerr's California Idea of Higher Education (The Clark Kerr Lectures On the Role of Higher Education in Society ... by Simon Marginson (University of California Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 12 hours ago

A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program for monographs. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. The Dream Is Over tells the extraordinary story of the 1960 Master Plan for Higher Education in California, created by visionary University of California President Clark Kerr and his contemporaries. The Master Plan's equality of opportunity policy brought college within reach of millions of American families for the first time and fashioned the world's leading system of public research universities. The California idea became the leading model for higher education across the world and has had great influence in the rapid growth of universities in China and East Asia. Yet, remarkably, the political conditions supporting the California idea in California itself have evaporated. Universal access is faltering, public tuition is rising, the great research universities face new challenges, and educational participation in California, once the national leader, lags far behind. Can the social values embodied in Kerr's vision be renewed?

Democracy's Children: Intellectuals and the Rise of Cultural Politics by John McGowan (Cornell University Press) 3.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 52 minutes ago

How do American intellectuals try to achieve their political and social goals? By what means do they articulate their hopes for change? John McGowan seeks to identify the goals and strategies of contemporary humanistic intellectuals who strive to shape the politics and culture of their time. In a lively mix of personal reflection and shrewd analysis, McGowan visits the sites of intellectual activity (scholarly publications, professional conferences, the classroom, and the university) and considers the hazards of working within such institutional contexts to effect change outside the academy. Democracy's Children considers the historical trajectory that produced current intellectual practices. McGowan links the growing prestige of "culture" since 1800 to the growth of democracy and the obsession with modernity and explores how intellectuals became both custodians and creators of culture. Caught between fears of culture's irrelevance and dreams of its omnipotence, intellectuals pursue a cultural politics that aims for wide-ranging social transformations. For better or worse, McGowan says, the humanities are now tied to culture and to the university. The opportunities and frustrations attendant on this partnership resonate with the larger successes and failures of contemporary democratic societies. His purpose in this collection of essays is to illuminate the conditions under which intellectuals in a democracy work and at the same time to promote intellectual activities that further democratic ideals.

Lift Us Up, Don't Push Us Out!: Voices from the Front Lines of the Educational Justice Movement by Mark R. Warren (Beacon Press) 4.1 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 20 hours ago

Parents, young people, community organizers, and educators describe how they are fighting systemic racism in schools by building a new intersectional educational justice movement. Illuminating the struggles and triumphs of the emerging educational justice movement, this anthology tells the stories of how black and brown parents, students, educators, and their allies are fighting back against systemic inequities and the mistreatment of children of color in low-income communities. It offers a social justice alternative to the corporate reform movement that seeks to privatize public education through expanding charter schools and voucher programs. To address the systemic racism in our education system and in the broader society, the contributors argue that what is needed is a movement led by those most affected by injustice--students of color and their parents--that builds alliances across sectors and with other social justice movements addressing immigration, LGBTQ rights, labor rights, and the school-to-prison pipeline. Representing a diverse range of social justice organizations from across the US, including the Chicago Teachers Union and the Genders and Sexualities Alliance Network, the essayists recount their journeys to movement building and offer practical organizing strategies and community-based alternatives to traditional education reform and privatization schemes. Lift Us Up! will outrage, inform, and mobilize parents, educators, and concerned citizens about what is wrong in American schools today and how activists are fighting for and achieving change.

Consorting And Collaborating In The Education Market Place (Education Policy Perspectives) by Chris Husbands (Routledge) Price verified 5 hours ago

This text offers descriptions and analyses of some of the different ways in which schools and other educational institutions have started to establish new collaborative relationships in today's competitive educational marketplace. Using case studies, the book describes examples of such collaborative structures.; Educational consortia have been established as a vehicle for professional and curriculum development, as a source of mutual support and as a condition of mutual survival. As the "LEA monopolies" have been forced to shed many of their traditional functions or schools have opted out, schools have found it necessary to re-create parts of their collaborative structures out of sheer self- Interest.; For Some Educators Who Continue To Be Attached To Notions Of "an educational service" and professional collegiality in the provision of such a service, inter-institutional collaboration becomes seen as something to be valued independently of the instrumental benefits which it provides. For this variety of reasons, consortium working and collaborative structures seem set to develop in spite of, or as a necessary antodote to, educational markets. Understanding the role and operation of such structures is a necessity for educational managers in all parts of the educational service.

Indigenous Knowledge and Education in Africa (Frontiers in African Business Research) by Chika Ezeanya-Esiobu (Springer) Price verified 5 hours ago

This open access book presents a strong philosophical, theoretical and practical argument for the mainstreaming of indigenous knowledge in curricula development, and in teaching and learning across the African continent. Since the dawn of political independence in Africa, there has been an ongoing search for the kind of education that will create a class of principled and innovative citizens who are sensitive to and committed to the needs of the continent. When indigenous or environment-generated knowledge forms the basis of learning in classrooms, learners are able to immediately connect their education with their lived reality. The result is much introspection, creativity and innovation across fields, sectors and disciplines, leading to societal transformation. Drawing on several theoretical assertions, examples from a wide range of disciplines, and experiences gathered from different continents at different points in history, the book establishes that for education to trigger the necessary transformation in Africa, it should be constructed on a strong foundation of learners' indigenous knowledge. The book presents a distinct and uncharted pathway for Africa to advance sustainably through home-grown and grassroots based ideas, leading to advances in science and technology, growth of indigenous African business and the transformation of Africans into conscious and active participants in the continent's progress. Indigenous Knowledge and Education in Africa is of interest to educators, entrepreneurs, policymakers, researchers and individuals engaged in finding sustainable and strategic solutions to regional and global advancement.
