When Lucy is given a beautiful ruby necklace by Pierre, a gorgeous man she's only just met, her life suddenly becomes much more complicated. But the necklace isn't Pierre's to give and he and Lucy are forced to flee from Albie Chan, the local Triad boss. Here we meet the enigmatic Aurora, her suave yet sinister assistant, and a band of strange little people. There's a kleptomaniac monkey called Fingers and an Abyssinian cat with a talent for tracking, which comes in handy when an odd little jade statue in the shape of a camel turns up. A possibly-forged painting is discovered and there's even a cameo appearance by 1980's pop star, Pete Burns, although these two things are not necessarily related. NOTE: If you're not a LFC fan, please don't be put off. The book is not about football or allegiances. WARNING: Contains content of a sexual nature, some swearing and violence.

Devotion: For Love or Honor by Isabella Harron (Teresa A. Rehm) 3.8 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 11 minutes ago

Ryan I stepped out of bed this morning without delay excited for a Monday morning; this has been my routine since the second day of school Senior year, unlike the way I felt the day before. The first day of school, I walked in, tired of football, girl drama, and worrying about what the future holds. It was on the tip of my tongue to ask if I can move up my date to join the military if I graduate in December instead of waiting until May, but promises made amid the heartbreak, control the choices I have now. I walked the hall, debating my options on the way to my elective, Journalism, which I chose as an easy option. I continued my path, a daunting task when surrounded by cheerleaders fighting for my attention. Clueless, them, not me, a talent I developed freshmen year when I started playing varsity football while fighting off the senior girls. I learned how to seem interested. I have perfected the technique; I am a master at it. I am not a jerk or even a bad guy. I have not found a girl in this school that holds my interest; it is as simple as that. Until that day first period Journalism, breaking away from the group as the sound of the second bell rings, I made my excuses, walking into the classroom as if I owned the place. Another technique I had developed which hid my insecurity in this life, to all outside appearances, I am calm and confident when I am in all reality nervous as a kindergartner on his first day of school. I plastered my best one, a smirking smile working for me as I heard the collective gasps from the girls as I strolled into the room that is until I listened to her voice, rendering me speechless. "Good morning Mr. Raines. How nice of you to join us." My eyes met hers, halting me in my tracks. With a pounding heart, dry mouth, and I was utterly silent. It could not have been but a second before I heard a clearing of a throat, witnessing as she pointed towards an empty seat, but to me, it felt as if hours had passed where I was lost, caught up in ...

Fiona Garvey, ballet dancer and new college graduate, is desperate to escape her sister's betrayal and a failed relationship. Vowing to restart as far from home as possible, she accepts a two-year teaching position with the Peace Corps in Africa. It's a role she's sure she can perform. But in no time, Fiona realizes she's traded her problems in Omaha for bigger ones in Gabon, a country as beautiful as it is filled with contradictions. Emotionally derailed by Christophe, a charismatic and privileged Gabonese man who can teach her to let go of her inhibitions but can't commit to anything more, threatened by an overly familiar student with a menacing fixation on her, and drawn into the compelling but potentially dangerous local dance ceremonies, Fiona finds herself at increasing risk. And when matters come to a shocking head, she must reach inside herself, find her dancer's power, and fight back. Blending humor and pathos, A DANCER'S GUIDE TO AFRICA takes the reader along on a suspense-laden, sensual journey through Africa's complex beauty, mystery and mysticism.

Ode to a Nightingale (Complete Edition) by John Keats (e-artnow) Price verified 42 minutes ago

This carefully crafted ebook: "Ode to a Nightingale (Complete Edition)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. "Ode to a Nightingale" is either the garden of the Spaniards Inn, Hampstead, London, or, according to Keats' friend Charles Armitage Brown, under a plum tree in the garden of Keats House, also in Hampstead. According to Brown, a nightingale had built its nest near his home in the spring of 1819. Inspired by the bird's song, Keats composed the poem in one day. It soon became one of his 1819 odes and was first published in Annals of the Fine Arts the following July. "Ode to a Nightingale" is a personal poem that describes Keats's journey into the state of Negative Capability. The tone of the poem rejects the optimistic pursuit of pleasure found within Keats's earlier poems and explores the themes of nature, transience and mortality, the latter being particularly personal to Keats. The nightingale described within the poem experiences a type of death but does not actually die. Instead, the songbird is capable of living through its song, which is a fate that humans cannot expect. John Keats (1795-1821) was an English Romantic poet. The poetry of Keats is characterized by sensual imagery, most notably in the series of odes. Today his poems and letters are some of the most popular and most analyzed in English literature.

Alice thinks she's accepted the loss of her ballet career, injury having forced her to trade in pointe shoes onstage for spreadsheets upstairs. That is, until the day Alice's boss asks her to befriend Lana, a pretty new company member he's got his eye on. Lana represents all Alice has lost, not just as a ballet dancer, but as a motherless daughter. It's pain she's kept hidden, even from herself, as every good ballet dancer knows to do. Lana, lonely and unmoored, desperately needs some help, and her mother, back home, vows eternal support. But when Lana begins to profit from Alice's advice and help, her mother's constant attention curdles into something more sinister. Together, both women must embark on a journey of painful rediscoveries, not just about career opportunities won and lost, but the mothers they thought they knew. Frances Burney (1752-1840) was an English satirical novelist, diarist and playwright. She is best known for her novels Evelina, Cecilia, Camilla and The Wanderer. Burney's novels explore the lives of English aristocrats, and satirize their social pretensions and personal foibles, with an eye to larger questions such as the politics of female identity. She has gained critical respect in her own right, but she also foreshadowed such novelists of manners with a satirical bent as Jane Austen and Thackeray.

The Turn by Matthew Tysz 3.8 Stars (33 Reviews)    Price verified 11 minutes ago

"They say the end of the world began when the president of the United States shot himself on national television... " This is the first of three books currently available. The series will ultimately consist of five novels. Before I get into what the story is about specifically, I want to let you know off the bat that this is a niche story: this entry novel into a dark mythological world consists of a crushingly dark and hopeless atmosphere, and is governed by characters who themselves are no white knights; they are wanderers trying to make sense out of a confusing world. To read the first entry of this series is like walking through a dark forest, with noises echoing from untraceable sources, shapes forming in the branches that look like something other than what they are, and all manner of things appearing out of nowhere. As the series continues, the forest opens up, and the characters begin to find agency in this new world. There is slavery in this story, and implications of all forms of abuse (though sexual abuse is never explicitly described). The main characters are flawed to a fault; some may argue an unforgivable fault. There is no hero in this story, at least not in this opening entry to the series. This first book is somber, depressing, and bizarre. However, nihilism is not the overall theme of the series: quite the opposite, in fact. On to the subject of the story... The series begins two years after an event which rendered the world geographically unrecognizable and left less than ten percent of the population alive. Scholar, one of the two main characters, was lazing in his basement apartment when the event actually happened, so the details of this event are unknown to him, because nobody wants to talk about it. The second main character is Ashley. He is a former Wall Street playboy who has learned how to adapt physically and psychologically to the new world. But he wants to get out of survival mode and see the world, motivated by a deep and ...

God Speaks.a true story by Beverly A. Brown 4.6 Stars (66 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

When God does something miraculous, sometimes you see it and sometimes you don't. I can truthfully say, that I have seen a miracle. I never expected it to happen. The circumstances surrounding it didn't make much sense to me at the time, because my daughter was dying. My daughter... a child whose biography is full of challenges. But God had a special purpose for her life. Now I can understand why He chose her. She was a perfect candidate for God to work through -- in ways that most of us can't even imagine. Something supernatural happened to my daughter. God worked in her life in such a way that revealed a unique revelation of His presence. It was a never to be forgotten experience, creating a phenomena, which is now burned into many people's memories. One author said it this way... God is speaking, always speaking; not through channels you might have expected. But He is always speaking. My daughter's life and her death would make that statement ring true in a way that no one could have predicted. Her legacy would live on long after she was gone. You probably have no idea who Tara Nicole Brown is, but what a story it tells; her story. If you have ever wondered... is God really involved in my life? or... is there really life after death?, then this story is for you. It's an exceptional story. Piecing it together has been my labor of love these past four years. I think it's important to share how we've survived times of adversity and tragedy, so that we don't lose heart; which is part of the reason I wrote this book. All of us go through dark times in our lives. When life seems dark and hard to understand, many times we doubt God's presence. But we are not alone. God is with us. As you dig a little deeper in this story, you will discover, He is with us... even in the valley of the shadow of death. My daughter's life was a great testimony of God's presence, His love, and true purpose. Now her memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew her, and ...

After a decades-long apocalypse, the United States has become the Seven Cities of America. Chicago, cut off from the other cities, ruled in darkness, is home to the scientist who created the virus. Hateful of humanity, hateful of himself, the dying scientist passes his knowledge on to his apprentice, who he believes will use it to damn all life to everlasting misery. The apprentice, Harold, his own past stained with unforgivable acts, does not share his master's hatred. But he wants this knowledge, and would shamelessly kill innocents to get it. But to what end, he struggles to realize -- all the while wondering if humanity, worthless as it seems, deserves compassion more than he deserves omniscience. As Harold struggles with his future and his identity, Chicago's ruler, the host, learns of the knowledge he has. Harold is has to flee his home. The host, Grakus, is on a journey of his own -- to prove that humanity should never have existed, to guide it to its destiny of self-destruction. He will not allow Harold to thwart his delicate plan to do so. But Harold will not allow the host to steal his decision before he's had the chance to make it. The Last City of America is a character-driven epic touching every corner of America, exposing every level of its beauty. The individual emulates humanity, and humanity's faults are written in the individual. The two walk with one another into the final decision. Cities fall one-by-one to man's ignorance. Camilla, A Picture of Youth: British Romance Classic by Frances Burney (e-artnow) Price verified 3 hours ago

Camilla - A Picture of Youth deals with the matrimonial concerns of a group of young people: Camilla Tyrold and her sisters, the sweet tempered Lavinia and the deformed, but extremely kind, Eugenia, and their cousin, the beautiful Indiana Lynmere. Central theme is the love affair between Camilla herself and her eligible suitor, Edgar Mandlebert. They have many hardships, however, caused by misunderstandings and mistakes, in the path of true love.

The Gospel of Matthias by Philip Wik (A Blue Kitten Book) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 11 minutes ago

The Gospel of Matthias has everything: thrills, action, love, horror, coming-of-age, satire, and science fantasy. It's a space opera that has diverse characters on a stage of a vast scope of time and distance. And it's a story that connects with us. The fears and passions of Julie and Selene on their life's journey become our fears and passions. Written with the feeling of a poet and the vision of an architect, this epic has strong characterization, a well-developed plot and plot twists, and relishes the romance of ideas. It echoes the futuristic nostalgia of Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles and the horror of H.P. Lovecraft or Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. The Gospel of Matthias is the abridged version of The Luna Cult Chronicles trilogy. The Brain in a Vat A new religious cult is sweeping the nation. Tom, a Chicago reporter, is investigating the cult for its terrorist ties. The worship of the goddess Luna is attracting Julie, his girlfriend. Intrigue in Asia and the Middle East that threatens to plunge the world into another world war entangles them. Their curiosity leads Tom and Julie to a laboratory of human heads in glass jars. Global Extinction The cult is now facing its greatest challenge along with the rest of the world. A comet the size of the moon will destroy the Earth in a month. Julie and her fifteen year-old daughter Selene travel from Michigan to Washington, D.C., confronting along the way rape, cannibalism, child sacrifice, and radiation poisoning. The War of the Hybrids It's the year 2041 with moon colonies and space travel. Julie is now the leader of the cult and her daughter Selene is a twenty-five year old West Point graduate, the wife of Bill, a Moslem, who also graduated from West Point. The last world war has reached its climax as animal-human hybrids exterminate humanity.
