Democracy Abroad, Lynching at Home: Racial Violence in Florida by Tameka Bradley Hobbs (University Press of Florida) 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

"Hobbs unearths four lynchings that are critical to the understanding of the origins of civil rights in Florida. The oral histories from the victims' families and those in the communities make this a valuable contribution to African American, Florida, and civil rights history."--Derrick E. White, author of The Challenge of Blackness "A compelling reminder of just how troubling and violent the Sunshine State's racial past has been. A must read."--Irvin D.S. Winsboro, editor of Old South, New South, or Down South? Florida is frequently viewed as an atypical southern state--more progressive and culturally diverse--but, when examined in proportion to the number of African American residents, it suffered more lynchings than any of its Deep South neighbors during the Jim Crow era. Investigating this dark period of the state's history and focusing on a rash of anti-black violence that took place during the 1940s, Tameka Hobbs explores the reasons why lynchings continued in Florida when they were starting to wane elsewhere. She contextualizes the murders within the era of World War II, contrasting the desire of the United States to broadcast the benefits of its democracy abroad while at home it struggled to provide legal protection to its African American citizens. As involvement in the global war deepened and rhetoric against Axis powers heightened, the nation's leaders became increasingly aware of the blemish left by extralegal violence on America's reputation. Ultimately, Hobbs argues, the international implications of these four murders, along with other antiblack violence around the nation, increased pressure not only on public officials in Florida to protect the civil rights of African Americans in the state but also on the federal government to become more active in prosecuting racial violence. Tameka Bradley Hobbs is assistant professor of history at Florida Memorial University.

The Giant Forest: Chapter Book for Parents and Grandparents of Preteens Who Love to Read (Growing Up Aimi 1) by Mia Belew 5.0 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

Move over C S Lewis and Roald Dahl. There's a new storyteller on the rise and she's only 11 years old. In this true-to-life story, Aimi, Roci, Mousi, Sybil and Sycamore are a loose group of friends, aka The Bunch, who attend school together. The Bunch go to a 150-year old church camp, Mount Hermon, founded around the time of the first gold rush in 1849. The camp is located in a giant forest situated in the Santa Cruz mountains of California, just over the hill from Silicon Valley. In keeping with the principles of its founders, Bart, Prissie and their adopted son Artie, the camp administrators want the camp to be a modern day refuge for children like the Bunch who live at a time when many people around them, including their parents, are chasing new gold in their area. Each member of the Bunch becomes seemingly inexplicably lost in the giant forest. They must each find themselves, then find one another before they can together again find their way home. Along the way they receive help from new animal friends whose ancestors had previously received a life-saving kindness from the founders of Mt. Hermon. Along the way, each member of the Bunch battles with and finds resolution to problems they face at home from overbearing or neglectful parents, sibling rivalry, prejudice, betrayal and displaced loyalty. When the five become reunited, bigger battles ensue. To return home they must overcome giants that have plagued them throughout their lost experience. Once victorious, the Bunch is led back to Mt. Hermon by their forest friends. A chapter book for for preteens who love to read. Enjoy discussion questions at the end of each chapter for reading groups or parent and child devotions. Giant forest = a really big forest or a forest with giants? Or both. Only the reader knows.

The Complete Harvard Classics and Shelf of Fiction by Charles W. Eliot (knowledge house) 4.0 Stars (34 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

( newly updated TOC ) The Harvard Universal Classics, originally known as Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf, is a 51-volume anthology of classic works from world literature, compiled and edited by Harvard University president Charles W. Eliot and first published in 1909. Eliot had stated in speeches that the elements of a liberal education could be obtained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. (Originally he had said a three-foot shelf.) The publisher P. F. Collier and Son saw an opportunity and challenged Eliot to make good on this statement by selecting an appropriate collection of works, and the Harvard Classics was the result. Eliot worked for one year with William A. Neilson, a professor of English; Eliot determined the works to be included and Neilson selected the specific editions and wrote introductory notes. Each volume had 400-450 pages, and the included texts are "so far as possible, entire works or complete segments of the world's written legacies." The collection was widely advertised by Collier and Son, in Collier's and elsewhere, with great success. Eight years later Eliot added a further 20 volumes as a sub-collection titled 'The Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction', offering some of the greatest novels and short stories of world literature. The exhaustive anthology of the 'The Harvard Classics' comprises every major literary figure, philosopher, religion, folklore and historical subject up to the twentieth century.

Still Invisible?: Examining America's Black Male Crisis by Elvin Dowling (Inspira Communications) 4.8 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

Still Invisible? is more than a narrative on the challenges facing Black males. After all, everyone recognizes there's a problem, and another book simply highlighting those challenges does very little to address the issues at hand, contribute to meaningful and substantive dialogue or offer reasonable solutions on how to help make America better. What makes this book different from anything else you have ever read, however, is that it provides the reader with the tools and resources they need to factually contextualize the issues facing black men today, while not letting anyone off the hook for the problems we need to overcome--be they self-inflicted wounds or perpetrated by the state.

How The Blind Detective and His Seeing Eye Dog Saved the Narwhals: A Peter Straw, Third Eye Mystery Novel by Shawn Adair Johnston 5.0 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

In 2079, the "unicorns of the sea," also known as narwhals, are being driven to extinction for their ivory tusks by poachers in the Canadian Arctic. Peter Straw, the blind detective who claims to use his "third eye" to catch bad guys, is working with Canadian authorities to stop the poaching. Can Straw, with the help of three intellectually augmented animals, including his Seeing Eye dog Watson, help bring the villains to justice? As well as Watson, a harbor porpoise named Emma and a chimpanzee named Aristotle Jones have received surgical augmentation, raising their cognitive abilities to the level of young human adults. They describe their transformation into human-level consciousness as well as the role they play in tracking down the narwhal poachers. In addition to two famous ghosts haunting Quebec City, where most of the action takes place, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Coast Guard chase the villains down the St. Lawrence River where they plan to rendezvous with the foreign agents financing the narwhal poaching scheme. In this adventure story, the nature of good versus evil, consciousness, and what it means to be a "person" are explored with humor and compassion for all who struggle to overcome handicaps and achieve meaning in life.

In addition to the ever-present threat of "Insane Grizzly Woman", as well as some other very scary beasts, our heroes find themselves investigating a kidnapping and possible murder which threatens to destroy the peace that has existed for almost 200 years between the native and white populations. As Straw and his companions work to solve these crimes, they are embroiled in local politics and the controversial choices native people must make concerning their future. While our heroes are enamored of this world in which they now find themselves, they do want to return home. Unfortunately, the initial asteroid passage of earth appears to have awakened an ancient evil in this land which threatens their plan to return as well as their very lives and maybe even their very souls.

The Story of the Goths by Henry Bradley (Blackmore Dennett) 4.0 Stars (143 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

More than three hundred years before the birth of Christ, a traveller from the Greek colony of Marseilles, named Pytheas, made known to the civilized world the existence of a people called Guttones, who lived near the Frische Haff, in the country since known as East Prussia, and traded in the amber that was gathered on the Baltic shores. For four whole centuries these amber merchants of the Baltic are heard of no more. The elder Pliny, a Roman writer who died in the year 79 after Christ, tells us that in his time they were still dwelling in the same neighbourhood; and a generation later, Tacitus, the greatest of Roman historians, twice mentions their name, though he spells it rather differently as Gotones. In his little book on Germany, he says -- in that brief pointed style of his which it is so difficult to translate into English -- "Beyond the Lygians live the Gotones among whom the power of the kings has already become greater than among the other Germans, though it is not yet too great for them to be a free people." And in his Annals he mentions that they gave shelter to a prince belonging to another German nation, who had been driven from his own country by the oppression of a foreign conqueror. These two brief notices are all that Tacitus, who has told us so much that is interesting about the peoples of ancient Germany, has to say of the Gotones. But if he could only have guessed what was the destiny in store for this obscure and distant tribe, we may be sure that they would have received a far larger share of his attention. For these Gotones were the same people who afterwards became so famous under the name of Goths, who, a few centuries later, crowned their kings in Rome itself, and imposed their laws on the whole of Southern Europe from the Adriatic to the Western sea...

In Search of Lost Time [volumes 1 to 7] by Marcel Proust (knowledge house) 4.3 Stars (192 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

"'In Search of Lost Time' is widely recognized as the major novel of the twentieth century." -- Harold Bloom "At once the last great classic of French epic prose tradition and the towering precursor of the 'nouveau roman'." -- Bengt Holmqvist "Proust so titillates my own desire for expression that I can hardly set out the sentence. Oh if I could write like that!" -- Virginia Woolf "The greatest fiction to date." -- W. Somerset Maugham "Proust is the greatest novelist of the 20th century." -- Graham Greene On the surface a traditional "Bildungsroman" describing the narrator's journey of self-discovery, this huge and complex book is also a panoramic and richly comic portrait of France in the author's lifetime, and a profound meditation on the nature of art, love, time, memory and death. But for most readers it is the characters of the novel who loom the largest: Swann and Odette, Monsieur de Charlus, Morel, the Duchesse de Guermantes, Françoise, Saint-Loup and so many others -- Giants, as the author calls them, immersed in Time. "In Search of Lost Time" is a novel in seven volumes. The novel began to take shape in 1909. Proust continued to work on it until his final illness in the autumn of 1922 forced him to break off. Proust established the structure early on, but even after volumes were initially finished he kept adding new material, and edited one volume after another for publication. The last three of the seven volumes contain oversights and fragmentary or unpolished passages as they existed in draft form at the death of the author; the publication of these parts was overseen by his brother Robert.

Violent Circle Comedy Series Box Set by S.M. Shade 4.8 Stars (73 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

Meet the crazy neighbors who live on Violent Circle, where normal is a dirty word. Whether it's battling the town to keep an adult toy shop from being shut down, making it through the college years in an apartment full of guys, or struggling to be a single parent, they always stick together. Book One: Scarlet Toys Living on Violent Circle, a place that's less of a neighborhood and more of an insane asylum poured into the street, I thought I was prepared for anything. After you've seen a woman strip down at the laundry room to wash the clothes she's wearing, then saunter across the street naked, you've seen it all, right? How naïve I was. After the factory closed, leaving me and a good portion of the town unemployed, I took a job managing Scarlet Toys. I knew it wouldn't be a typical work environment, selling adult toys in a town more uptight than a constipated nun, but some things you just never see coming. Like the protesters covered in poison ivy, screaming about smut peddlers. Or a dancing dinosaur named Fappy. Or the allure of the man standing in the center of all the chaos. Wyatt Lawson, a six foot, four inch heap of muscle with a quick smile, ignited my interest in more than the available manager position. Like the missionary one. Or the rodeo. Maybe the side rider. What can I say? I'm an overachiever. Let's just hope he doesn't scare easily. Book Two: Frat Hell Frat Hell. That's how the whole neighborhood refers to the apartment where I live with three other college students. It's a bit judgmental, considering the neighborhood we live in is more like a zoo than an apartment complex, but not inaccurate. If you put that many young guys together, things are bound to be interesting. I still maintain that the giant water guns filled with poison ivy water were not my idea. January Dixon. She's the girl I've lusted after for years. A smart mouth and sharp tongue surrounded by soft beauty and a body I'd give up an organ just to touch. An important organ, like a ...

OCW (Volume 1): The Re-Creation by TL Brown Price verified 22 hours ago

"What's an E-fed?" That is all I have heard since beginning this story, so I'll explain: The E-fed, or fantasy wrestling, represents the genre of both role-playing and statistics-based games and set in the world of pro wrestling. Many variants of this exist. Examples include websites, message boards, e-mail, regular mail, etc. Storylines are determined and the roster is composed of characters created by the players. In this collection of books that make up the first volume of an epic series, the lesser known existence of the e-fed style is shown in a similar style. In the OCW, there are easily over thirty characters that all have their own stories to tell. In these pages, names are made, stories begin and fights... keep things interesting.

The international battle against Internet pirates has been heating up. Increasingly law enforcement is paying attention to book piracy as ebook publishing gains an ever-larger market share. Drawing from a large number of interviews—from writers, self-publishers, mainstream publishers, researchers, students, admitted pirates, free speech advocates, attorneys, and local and international law enforcement officials—the text speaks to such issues as: •Why pirates have acted and how they feel about it •The conflict over constitutional rights and piracy •The current laws surrounding Internet piracy •Examples of cases taken against some pirates •Alternatives to piracy •Personal experiences of being ripped off •The ways piracy affects different industries and how they've responded Author Gini Graham Scott prepares readers to arm themselves against these modern perils by learning about copyright, infringement, and how to prevent, combat, and end book piracy. Bears by the Numbers: A Complete Team History of the Chicago Bears by Uniform Number by Lew Freedman (Sports Publishing) 4.8 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified one day ago

What do Al Campana, Frank Dempsey, Stan Wallace, Don Mullins, Gale Sayers, and Steve Trimble all have in common? They all wore number 40 for the Chicago Bears, even though more than four decades passed between the last time Campana last pulled on his jersey and the number was retired for Sayers in 1994 (along with 51 for Dick Butkus). Since the Chicago Bears first adopted uniform numbers in 1932, the team has handed out only 99 numbers to more than 1,000 players. That's a lot of overlap. It also makes for a lot of good stories. Bears by the Numbers tells those stories for every Bear since '32, from Red Grange to Pernell McPhee. This book lists the players alphabetically and by number; these biographies help trace the history of one of football's oldest and most beloved teams in a new way. For Bears fans, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Bears by the Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even those they think they already know.

Slavery in Florida: Territorial Days to Emancipation by Larry Eugene Rivers (University Press of Florida) 5.0 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

This important illustrated social history of slavery tells what life was like for bond servants in Florida from 1821 to 1865, offering new insights from the perspective of both slave and master. Starting with an overview of the institution as it evolved during the Spanish and English periods, Larry E. Rivers looks in detail and in depth at the slave experience, noting the characteristics of slavery in the Middle Florida plantation belt (the more traditional slave-based, cotton-growing economy and society) as distinct from East and West Florida (which maintained some attitudes and traditions of Spain). He examines the slave family, religion, resistance activity, slaves' participation in the Civil War, and their social interactions with whites, Indians, other slaves, and masters. Rivers also provides a dramatic account of the hundreds of armed free blacks and runaways among the Seminole, Creek, and Mikasuki Indians on the peninsula, whose presence created tensions leading to the great slave rebellion, the Second Seminole War (1835-42). Slavery in Florida is built upon painstaking research into virtually every source available on the subject--a wealth of historic documents, personal papers, slave testimonies, and census and newspaper reports. This serious critical work strikes a balance between the factual and the interpretive. It will be significant to all readers interested in slavery, the Civil War, the African American experience, and Florida and southern U.S. history, and it could serve as a comprehensive resource for secondary school teachers and students.

Black Miami in the Twentieth Century (Florida History and Culture) by Marvin Dunn (University Press of Florida) 5.0 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

The first book devoted to the history of African Americans in south Florida and their pivotal role in the growth and development of Miami, Black Miami in the Twentieth Century traces their triumphs, drudgery, horrors, and courage during the first 100 years of the city's history. Firsthand accounts and over 130 photographs, many of them never published before, bring to life the proud heritage of Miami's black community. Beginning with the legendary presence of black pirates on Biscayne Bay, Marvin Dunn sketches the streams of migration by which blacks came to account for nearly half the city's voters at the turn of the century. From the birth of a new neighborhood known as "Colored Town," Dunn traces the blossoming of black businesses, churches, civic groups, and fraternal societies that made up the black community. He recounts the heyday of "Little Broadway" along Second Avenue, with photos and individual recollections that capture the richness and vitality of black Miami's golden age between the wars. A substantial portion of the book is devoted to the Miami civil rights movement, and Dunn traces the evolution of Colored Town to Overtown and the subsequent growth of Liberty City. He profiles voting rights, housing and school desegregation, and civil disturbances like the McDuffie and Lozano incidents, and analyzes the issues and leadership that molded an increasingly diverse community through decades of strife and violence. In concluding chapters, he assesses the current position of the community--its socioeconomic status, education issues, residential patterns, and business development--and considers the effect of recent waves of immigration from Latin America and the Caribbean. Dunn combines exhaustive research in regional media and archives with personal interviews of pioneer citizens and longtime residents in a work that documents as never before the life of one of the most important black communities in the United States.

Wounded Minds: Understanding and Solving the Growing Menace of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder by John Liebert (Skyhorse) 4.5 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified one day ago

A compelling look at one of the most pressing public health issues of our time. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. John Liebert, a psychiatrist who has treated hundreds of veterans, and Dr. William Birnes, a New York Times bestselling author, uncover the disturbing truths about post-traumatic stress disorder among veterans. Using scientific, historical, and anecdotal evidence, these two experts reveal why PTSD is on the rise, the threats it poses to society, and how the military is dramatically failing to give their men and women the help they desperately need. In addition, Liebert and Birnes detail the cutting-edge methods that have been developed to help soldiers heal the emotional wounds of combat. Wounded Minds also provides readers with fascinating analyses of several high-profile suicide and massacre cases, including Staff Sergeant Robert Bales's murder of sixteen Afghan citizens and Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who opened fire on a room full of defenseless American troops. Through these stories, the authors further illustrate the very real threat posed by post-traumatic stress disorder. They also explain how to diagnose and understand the brain abnormalities associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, the diagnostic problems confronting military medicine today, and what we can do now and in the future to curb this devastating epidemic.

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy (Open Road Media) 4.3 Stars (1,050 Review)    Price verified 7 hours ago

The grand epic set during Napoleon's invasion of Russia: a vividly detailed view of nineteenth-century Russian life by the author of Anna Karenina. Widely regarded as one of the greatest novels ever written, War and Peace is Leo Tolstoy's magnum opus, a groundbreaking work of literary realism, and a psychologically acute examination of Tsarist society in the Napoleonic Era. The narrative follows the fates, fortunes, loves, and betrayals of five aristocratic Russian families from an elegant soirée in 1805 Saint Petersburg to the abandoned and burning Moscow of 1812. With a panoramic cast of characters, including peasants, soldiers, nobles, and historical figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte and Mikhail Kutuzov, Tolstoy presents a hugely ambitious portrait of the human condition. First published in 1865, this edition of War and Peace was translated into English by Louise and Alymer Maude

A Buddhist Love Story by Bobby Hudson 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 11 hours ago

A few years ago I wrote a novel entitled "A Buddhist Love Story," which is the fictional account of Ron Johnson's adventure into Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhist practice. As Ron becomes a practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism, he revolutionizes his life. Moreover, Ron falls madly in love with Denise Sanford, the woman who introduces him to Nichiren Buddhism. A problem arises when Denise finds out something dark and disturbing about Ron's life that he has managed to keep secret from her. The question is whether or not Denise's revelation about Ron will doom any potential romance between Ron and Denise or will Ron be able to use Nichiren Buddhism to change his fundamental darkness and use it to benefit his relationship with Denise. This Buddhist philosophy was developed in Japan by a13th century monk named Nichiren Daishonin. Nichiren discovered by the very act of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo a person could reach a state of enlightenment or absolute happiness. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo translates to "devotion of the Mystic Law of cause and effect through the Buddhist teachings." Although "A Buddhist Love Story" is a fictional story, the novel's true intent is to give the reader an accurate and very real account of what it means to practice Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism. Since many Americans know little about Nichiren Daishonin Buddhist practice, I chose to provide readers with relative information about this Buddhism in an entertaining way. While being invested in Ron's story, the reader is able to learn how to practice Nichiren Buddhism and learn about the tremendous positive impact Nichiren Buddhism can have on a person's life. Therefore, "A Buddhist Love Story" can actually be used as a reference guide to practicing Nichiren Buddhism. Nichiren Buddhism is not a cult. In fact, Nichiren Buddhism advocates diversity and free thinking. No one in the Soka Gakkai International, which is the lay organization for Nichiren Daishonin Buddhist practice, ever tells anyone how they ...

THE IMPRESSIONIST OF PROVENCE by Ray Drayton 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 7 hours ago

1939-1945: The world was plunged into global conflict for the second time in recent history. The giant juggernaut of the Swastika swept across Europe with a vengeance to divide and conquer. Provence, like the rest of France was put to the sword of Nazi Ideology. French civilians stoically continued living their lives as they had for centuries, albeit on a day to day basis. The same question remained on every Frenchman's lips - surely this cannot be happening?? But it is. That is the shocking reality... Professor Baptiste Dubois was one such man. He relinquished his post as a lecturer at The Sorbonne in Paris. Like the great masters of French Impressionist Art, he heeded the inner call to imbibe in the vibrant light and colour harmonies which represent Provence. This unique region in the south of France possessed a magic which had mysteriously attracted artists since the post Renaissance Period. Provence lured people of similar ilk to partake in creating the magic their inner eye perceived directly onto canvas. The heart saw what the physical eye could not see. The 'New Age' technique of Impressionist art form was born. Baptiste's intended sojourn to join his family living in Provence and practice his art skills in particular, was thrust to one side when the totally unexpected happened. The outbreak of war for the second time that century... The French government departed Paris 10th June 1940. German forces occupied Paris four days later. The French Capital had fallen. The Dubois family in idyllic Provence went about their daily lives seemingly oblivious to what had happened in the north of France. The brutal truth became apparent one night in 1944 when a RAF heavy bomber ditched in the Rhone River adjacent to the ancient Roman city of Arles, close by where they lived. Under threat of death by their German occupiers if they were caught, the two surviving members of the Dubois family hid the injured pilot from the dreaded Gestapo. Baptiste and his granddaughter, ...

Dancing in Blackness: A Memoir by Halifu Osumare (University Press of Florida) 5.0 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

American Society for Aesthetics Selma Jeanne Cohen Prize in Dance Aesthetics Before Columbus Foundation American Book Award Dancing in Blackness is a professional dancer's personal journey over four decades, across three continents and 23 countries, and through defining moments in the story of black dance in America. In this memoir, Halifu Osumare reflects on what blackness and dance have meant to her life and international career. Osumare's story begins in 1960s San Francisco amid the Black Arts Movement, black militancy, and hippie counterculture. It was there, she says, that she chose dance as her own revolutionary statement. Osumare describes her experiences as a young black dancer in Europe teaching "jazz ballet" and establishing her own dance company in Copenhagen. Moving to New York City, she danced with the Rod Rodgers Dance Company and took part in integrating the programs at the Lincoln Center. After doing dance fieldwork in Ghana, Osumare returned to California and helped develop Oakland's black dance scene. Osumare introduces readers to some of the major artistic movers and shakers she collaborated with throughout her career, including Katherine Dunham, Pearl Primus, Jean-Leon Destine, Alvin Ailey, and Donald McKayle. Now a black studies scholar, Osumare uses her extraordinary experiences to reveal the overlooked ways that dance has been a vital tool in the black struggle for recognition, justice, and self-empowerment. Her memoir is the inspiring story of an accomplished dance artist who has boldly developed and proclaimed her identity as a black woman.

Skytrain: A Transport Revolution by Philip Kaplan (Skyhorse) Price verified 4 hours ago

The legendary Douglas DC-3 airliner was a technological breakthrough that changed the course of both civilian and military aviation. In the 1930s, passenger air travel was expensive, uncomfortable, and frequently unreliable. That began to change with the appearance of the handsome, thoroughly modern DC-3, the twenty-one-passenger twin-engine propeller-driven creation of Donald Douglas and his young California company. The first production models were sold to airlines for $90,000. The price climbed to $115,000 just before the United States entered the Second World War in December 1941. The new plane quickly became a favorite of passengers the world over, and it became the first truly profitable plane for the industry. The threat posed by the coming war made the US Army realize that a military version could handle the vital troop and cargo transport capability soon to be needed. The C-47 Skytrain was born and evolved into specialized versions with many nicknames: Gooney Bird, Dakota, and Puff the Magic Dragon. In WWII, General Dwight Eisenhower was so impressed he referenced it in his famous comment: ?The four pieces of equipment the most vital to Allied success in Africa and Europe were the bulldozer, the jeep, the two-and-a-half-ton truck, and the Douglas C-47.? Skytrain celebrates the long and distinguished career of this great plane.

Life After Favre: A Season of Change with the Green Bay Packers and their Fans by Phil Hanrahan (Sports Publishing) 3.6 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 12 hours ago

The 2008 football season was one of transition for the Green Bay Packers and their legion of loyal fans. For the first time in seventeen years, the Packers were entering the season without three-time league MVP Brett Favre under center. After a whirlwind summer of rumor and controversy, Packers' management decided traded the thirty-eight-year-old gunslinger to the New York Jets, leaving “Packer Backers" worldwide to cope with life after Favre. Wisconsin native Phil Hanrahan moved from Los Angeles to Green Bay for the 2008 season. He watched games at Lambeau Field and followed new starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers as he attempted to follow in the footsteps of Favre, a Green Bay immortal. Immersing himself in the worlds of team and town, Hanrahan is reborn a full-blown Cheesehead; living in a hotel that decades earlier had served as the Packers offices, observing training camp practices, interviewing players, attending the Packers' annual shareholders meeting, tailgating in arctic cold, shoveling snow at Lambeau for $8 an hour, celebrating Packer great Fuzzy Thurston's 75th birthday at Thurston's bar, and, at every turn, befriending the scores of die-hard Packers fans he encounters along the way. Hanrahan also journeys far from Lambeau in his pursuit of adventures in Packer Land. He attends road games in Minneapolis and New Orleans and catches others on TV in small-town Wisconsin taverns. He watches one game in a bar and grill owned by rookie receiver Jordy Nelson's parents in rural Kansas, another at Mabel Murphy's, a year-round Packers bar located in Scottsdale, Arizona. He also visits Kiln, Mississippi, Favre's hometown. With energy, insight, humor, and vivid color, Life After Favre tells the story of a singular team and town. Hanrahan reveals the incredible scope and breadth of Packer Nation, and in doing so demonstrates how, when you bleed Packer green, even a 6-10 season can be something special.

Droll Stories by Honore de Balzac (Skyhorse) 4.2 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 12 hours ago

From the great French novelist comes this long-unavailable collection of tales in the tradition of Boccaccio's Decameron. Balzac's Contes Drolatiques, or Droll Stories, were originally published in three volumes in the 1830s. Set in medieval Europe, these stories were Balzac's attempt to write in the great tradition of Rabelais and Boccaccio, to render the Middle Ages with a touch of raunchy humor, and to provide a delightful portrait of medieval France. Balzac took the old themes that had delighted his ancestors—the tales of faithless wives and confiding husbands, of monks incredibly endowed for amorous athleticism, of lusty wenches and adventurous lads, and of great bouts of eating and drinking. Droll Stories has always been an essential part of Balzac's work when published in French, but it has been excluded from the definitive English editions. This book presents all three volumes of this classic and enduring work. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

A serendipitous, fender-bending encounter between the author, a distinguished landscape architect, and a wealthy Frenchman in Provence leads to the strangest, funniest horticultural odyssey in recent memory. The rich, eccentric Frenchman has just finished renovating, with great care and attention, a beautiful house in Provence. But the elegant courtyard looks very empty. “Find me the oldest olive tree in existence," he challenges the author, “and bring it back to take pride of place in my garden." The author's travels take him to the olive groves of France, the farms of Greece and Spain, and many backyards of Italy. Along the way, he encounters a 3,000-year-old tree, a farmer who won't sell his tree unless he can sell the farm that surrounds it, mafiosi skullduggery in the plant world, unscrupulous dealers, divided families, local weddings, farcical disasters, and a village that believes a drop of rain that has touched the leaves of the Angel Tree will cure any illness or sadness.

The Constitution in Crisis: The High Crimes of the Bush Administration and a Blueprint for Impeachment by House Democratic Judiciary Committee Staff (Skyhorse) 4.0 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 13 hours ago

The Republican-led Congress has been notoriously slow to investigate the current Republican administration. For that reason, Representative Conyers of Michigan commissioned his staff to put together the report that became The Constitution in Crisis. It chronicles the deceptions, manipulations, and retributions of President George W. Bush and his administration. Did the President mislead the country in order to invade Iraq? Have suspected “evil-doers" been tortured in violation of U.S. and international laws? Has the National Security Agency eaves-dropped on American citizens in violation of wire tapping laws? This report is a must-read for anyone concerned about the direction of our nation! Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more.
