"At present it appears the war has made peace more remote... however the war contained within it a seed which may yet bud into peace."
After six days' fighting Israel had seized control of the Gaza Strip and Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, the Golan Heights from Syria, and East Jerusalem and the West Bank from Jordan.
Although victorious, the mantle of governing the West Bank brought with it unexpected challenges.
At the heart of the Israeli effort were men such as Moshe Dayan and Eytan Israeli, and despite the circumstances relations were surprisingly cordial to begin with.
Dayan in particular sought to minimise the appearance of occupation, and with great effort from both sides a working relationship was established.
However, with time peace became a distant dream and new problems emerged: censored textbooks led to strikes, caches of arms were discovered, and terrorism grew in the region.

We are facing a global energy crisis caused by world population growth, an escalating increase in demand, and continued dependence on fossil-based fuels for generation. It is widely accepted that increases in greenhouse gas concentration levels, if not reversed, will result in major changes to world climate with consequential effects on our society and economy. This is just the kind of intractable problem that Purdue University's Global Policy Research Institute seeks to address in the Purdue Studies in Public Policy series by promoting the engagement between policy makers and experts in fields such as engineering and technology. Major steps forward in the development and use of technology are required. In order to achieve solutions of the required scale and magnitude within a limited timeline, it is essential that engineers be not only technologically-adept but also aware of the wider social and political issues that policy-makers face. Likewise, it is also imperative that policy ...

This book trains the next generation of scientists representing different disciplines to leverage the data generated during routine patient care. It formulates a more complete lexicon of evidence-based recommendations and support shared, ethical decision making by doctors with their patients.
Diagnostic and therapeutic technologies continue to evolve rapidly, and both individual practitioners and clinical teams face increasingly complex ethical decisions. Unfortunately, the current state of medical knowledge does not provide the guidance to make the majority of clinical decisions on the basis of evidence.
The present research infrastructure is inefficient and frequently produces unreliable results that cannot be replicated. Even randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the traditional gold standards of the research reliability hierarchy, are not without limitations. They can be costly, labor intensive, and slow, and can return results that are seldom generalizable to every patient ...

This book examines the exercise of power in the Stalinist music world as well as the ways in which composers and ordinary people responded to it. It presents a comparative inquiry into the relationship between music and politics in the German Democratic Republic and Poland from the aftermath of World War II through Stalin's death in 1953, concluding with the slow process of de-Stalinization in the mid-to late-1950s. The author explores how the Communist parties in both countries expressed their attitudes to music of all kinds, and how composers, performers, and audiences cooperated with, resisted, and negotiated these suggestions and demands. Based on a deep analysis of the archival and contemporary published sources on state, party, and professional organizations concerned with musical life, Tompkins argues that music, as a significant part of cultural production in these countries, played a key role in instituting and maintaining the regimes of East Central Europe. As part of the ...

The Mediterranean diet focuses on healthy eating and eating food that is very popular in the Mediterranean climate. It also serves to lose weight and normalize the digestive processes in the body. The Mediterranean diet should not be confused with the usual Mediterranean cuisine. The main difference between these two types of meal plans is that the first one contains a large number of low-fat food, which is easier and faster to cook. The main ingredients that are used in this type of diet are vegetables and fruits. As regards fats, olive oil is preferably recommended. However, this is not the whole list of allowed products. Fish, seafood, poultry, greens, whole grain bread, cereals, pasta, beans, nuts, yogurts and low-fat cheeses such as feta or mozzarella are widely used during the diet, too. The Mediterranean meal plan is not very strict, so sometimes you can sip a glass of dry wine for dinner. Nevertheless, roasted and fatty food, red or smoke meat, sweets, as well as white bread ...

In this book, you will discover that the Bible teaches you will
have the God you perceive, just like the mistaken steward in the
Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:24-26). This wicked steward
believed his god to be harsh, cruel, unfair and stingy. Please
notice that without as much as a word of opposition to the
steward's wrong conclusion, his master allowed him to continue
in his error. This mistaken servant had to live with the selfserving god that his flawed theology had given to him.
The actual truth of this parable is that the master was rich
not poor, generous not stingy, fair not unfair. Sadly, the
misinformed steward never learned his master's true nature.
This mistake caused the steward's perception of his master to
become his reality.
This is not an accurate reflection of God's true nature, for
God Jehovah never reaps where He doesn't sow. Instead, the
exact opposite is true. God is faithful to give generous harvests
where His children have sown.
The book provides an overview of more than a decade of joint R&D efforts in the Low Countries on HLT for Dutch. It not only presents the state of the art of HLT for Dutch in the areas covered, but, even more importantly, a description of the resources (data and tools) for Dutch that have been created are now available for both academia and industry worldwide.
The contributions cover many areas of human language technology (for Dutch): corpus collection (including IPR issues) and building (in particular one corpus aiming at a collection of 500M word tokens), lexicology, anaphora resolution, a semantic network, parsing technology, speech recognition, machine translation, text (summaries) generation, web mining, information extraction, and text to speech to name the most important ones.
The book also shows how a medium-sized language community (spanning two territories) can create a digital language infrastructure (resources, tools, etc.) as a basis for subsequent R&D. At the same ...
Miranda Schaffer just wants a little freedom for the start of college. Having convinced her parents to let her live in the house left to them by her great-aunt Janine, she's excited. That is, until her classmate, Cole, tries to convince her that the house is one of the tools needed by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse to raise Hell.
Cole identifies himself as a Guardian, whose sole purpose in life is to prevent the gateway to Hell -- supposedly Miranda's basement -- from falling into the wrong hands. Miranda brushes off his concerns, thinking he's crazy.
On top of that, the cute real estate agent interested in the house is, according to Cole, one of the Four Horsemen, and she should stay away from him at all costs. That's easier said than done when she can't get him out of her head.
Will her indecision leave her with Hell to pay?
This book had me gripped from the first page and had me swooning after both main characters. Thila was a strong, beautiful and educated woman - something that is often missing in many romance novels, in favour of the secretary-and-the-boss type relationship. The fact that Thila was interested in more than just romance and that she had her own career and goals was gripping to me and I could see myself liking her more and more as the story progressed. Arnav was a character I really liked reading about. As Thila is used to being the boss, I liked that Arnav took control of situations, but also knew when to back down. He was definitely a swoon-worthy main character and I would love to read more about both characters.
There were a couple of parts within the story that were raunchy and steamy, so if you don't like those aspects then this book may not be for you.
A dream-come-true-wedding in Vegas with a quickie living-in-the-real-world-divorce in Reno would solve Thila's ...

As Americans, we're facing serious problems - not only with skyrocketing healthcare costs but also lack of patient access and inefficient delivery. This book is written from a doctor's perspective, by Alejandro Badia, M.D., F.A.C.S. He didn't want to write this book but felt he had to because of the incredible problems he sees every day in getting the patient the care they need; and, as an expert, his treatment plans are constantly second-guessed and obstructed by the system which has a near-zero understanding of the problem that ...

According to an old story, a woman concealed her sex and ruled as pope for a few years in the ninth century. Pope Joan was not betrayed by a lover or discovered by an enemy; her downfall came when she went into labor during a papal procession through the streets of Rome. From the myth of Joan to the experiences of saints, nuns, and ordinary women, The Oldest Vocation brings to life both the richness and the troubling contradictions of Christian motherhood in medieval Europe.
After tracing the roots of medieval ideologies of motherhood in early Christianity, Clarissa W. Atkinson reconstructs the physiological assumptions underlying medieval notions about women's bodies and reproduction; inherited from Greek science and popularized through the practice of midwifery, these assumptions helped shape common beliefs about what mothers were. She then describes the development of "spiritual motherhood" both as a concept emerging out of monastic ideologies in the early Middle Ages and as a ...

In the remote Four Corners region of Colorado, Special Agent Nathaniel Arkin, a disgraced former intelligence officer, investigates the killing of a bigoted, vitriolic preacher who was about to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. In processing the murder scene, Arkin thinks he recognizes the modus operandi of a shadowy group he pursued and was on the verge of exposing years earlier, just before his abrupt fall from grace and exile from Washington, D.C. Rumored to be run by a self-righteous, lapsed Jesuit priest, it was a group Arkin long suspected of orchestrating an international assassination campaign targeting charismatic, fledgling fanatics -- future Hitlers and bin Ladens -- just as they emerged from obscurity, before they were capable of instigating mass murder. Reluctant, but aching for redemption, Arkin resumes the chase, setting in motion a chain of events that could lead to his salvation -- or his doom. Along ...
