Triumphant to the Last (the Jacobite Battle for Scotland Book 2) by John Marshall 4.3 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 36 minutes ago

Book 2 of the Jacobite Wars for Scotland Scotland had won its freedom at Prestonpans but all was not well. Bonnie Prince Charlie had dreams of sitting on the throne in London, among many of his expectations that his officers sought to subdue. After all the Scot's army was yet insignificant in comparison to the English army and the English King was already looking towards the Dutch to bolster his numbers. If the French had kept their promise and risen as expected, it may have been a different story. While Charlie danced away the night at Holyrood Palace, his officers worried about his plans for the future. Jamie Shepherd and his cousin William Shepherd had experienced the horrors of war at Prestonpans and both now wondered what was right and what was wrong in this conflict. Neither knew where their Uncle James Legg was and whether he would return. As they stood at Duddingston Loch they were faced with a future that looked bleak and both thought of home and family. Were they prepared for what was to happen next? The plain answer is that no one was. Their paths would not be of their choosing, but this was war and few knew or wished for what lay ahead. With the English army massing at Newcastle and rumours of further battalions arriving from Europe, what was the sensible action? Wait in Edinburgh and grow in strength or challenge the enemy on its own land. Only a maniac would do that? Well, Bonnie Prince Charlie had his own thoughts and this would be the beginning of a long journey. Follow in the footsteps of the young boys as they travel the length of England and Scotland in their quest for a free Scotland. Who will be 'Triumphant to the Last'?

The Last War had consumed the entire planet, destroying nearly everyone and everything. The fleeting remains of humanity had managed to rebuild the Twelve Cities focused entirely on establishing a peaceful people and a peaceful planet. Erstwhile: A Sci-Fi Romance (The Jekh Saga Book 1) by H.E. Trent 4.1 Stars (89 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

As an adamant opponent of Terran settlement on the planet Jekh, Owen McGarry made his family name synonymous with "traitor" on Earth. Lobbyists standing to profit from off-world colonization hinted that the Jekhans were preparing to declare war. Nearly twenty years after Owen's supposed death, his granddaughter Courtney wants to learn the truth -- even if she has to travel to the far-flung colony to do it. Court soon learns that not only was her grandfather right about the Jekhans, but that conditions on their world are far more hostile than she feared. Terran forces decimated the population of the resident human-alien hybrids, and the people who remain seem to be all out of fight. That is, except for the pair of men Court finds hiding in her basement. Fugitives Murki and Trigrian see a future in Court. On a planet where so few women remain, she has the potential to be the mate the lovers need. And more, she could become the advocate for their people that her grandfather didn't get the chance to be. When the corrupt local government seeks to punish Court's friends and family for her actions, she has no choice but to make a stand. If it takes a riot to make the people on Earth see that they were misled about Jekh, she's more than willing to start one. After all, her reputation couldn't possibly get any worse. ___ ERSTWHILE is a romantic adventure set in the near future that contains dark humor, some violence, and a very needy pair of extraterrestrials. The 37th Mandala by Marc Laidlaw (Freestyle Press) 3.4 Stars (19 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

The mandalas have always been among us, unseen and uncalled. Those few occult masters who have encountered them have known to leave them alone, for to these unholy forces we are mere playthings, insignificant tools to be used, fed upon -- and eventually discarded. When New Age charlatan Derek Crowe learns the secrets of the mandalas he sees only the opportunity for easy money. He ignores the warnings, alters the mystical texts to make the dreaded mandalas seem benevolent to a gullible public, then publishes his book and waits for the profits to roll in. But Crowe is all too successful. For he has inadvertently released upon the earth a horror that is beyond all understanding or control -- a horror both infinite and hungry. Named Best Novel of 1996 by the International Horror Guild Award, and a finalist for the World Fantasy Award, this marks The 37th Mandala's return to print after many years, and its first appearance as an ebook. Reviews: "Genuinely creepy. This book has enough to keep the reader checking the corners." - Stephen King "Marc Laidlaw is writing the kind of horror fiction that made me fall in love with the field in the first place. While he can be gruesome when he needs to be, his real power is in the largeness of his vision. The 37th Mandala is a masterpiece of the kind of visionary horror we've hardly seen since Lovecraft died." - Ramsey Campbell "This one will eat your brain." John Shirley "Attempts to achieve a genuine sense of awe are rare in contemporary horror. Describing the unspeakable is a daunting task, but Laidlaw rises to it, creating a manifestation of the unearthly that is both accessible and impenetrably alien. A superior tale of human beings in thrall to occult forces." - Publishers Weekly "To all rational men, there are horrific thoughts -- and their particular horror is what underlies and sustains such distinctively modern novels as The 37th Mandala... The strength of The 37th Mandala... lies in its painstaking attempt to ...

Yorktown: Katana Krieger #1 by Bill Robinson 4.3 Stars (337 Reviews)    Price verified 8 minutes ago

Four hundred years in our future, Captain Katana Krieger has just assumed command of the Union Navy's new frigate, USS Yorktown, when suddenly she and her crew are assigned to find a missing convoy 200 light years from earth. What she finds instead is an alien invasion, one that only she and her crew can stop. Action and adventure await the reader. This is not great literature, it's simply great fun. Some violence, an adult innuendo or two, and an occasional "frak," otherwise fine for fun lovers of all ages. NOTE: A couple bits of information appear to be useful based on the first 60 or so reviews. First. Yes, it's written in the first person, which bothers some folks in this genre, but I thought it necessary since it's a mystery being solved and this way you get the same info she gets to figure it out. It is, as many have pointed out, unlike 99% of alien invasion stories. Second, Katana is not Spruance, or Nimitz, or Halsey or any modern Navy commander. She is based on Steven Decatur, late 1700s US frigate captain. Youngest captain in US Navy history, one of only 53 people ever to have a portrait appear on US currency, namesake of an Arleigh Burke destroyer. When the USS Philadelphia was captured in Tripoli, he planned, executed, and personally led a special ops mission to destroy her (which earned him the utter respect of Horatio Nelson). When his brother was killed, he planned, executed, and led a special ops mission during which, outnumbered better than 5 to 1, he still managed to personally kill the enemy ship captain and escape. He was sent by Thomas Jefferson to negotiate treaties with foreign governments, which he usually did through expeditious use of his cannons. No modern commander would act that way, but Katana's soul is 700 years old. The ships in this book are generally either (a) revolutionary war battles or (b) associated with the first six frigates of the US Navy (Congress, Constitution, Decatur, Bainbridge, Truxton). This is a topsails and ...

Time Stands Still: Book Two of the Emi Lost & Found series by Lori L. Otto 4.4 Stars (92 Reviews)    Price verified 8 minutes ago

Emi Lost & Found series - Winner of the Best Happily Ever After of 2013 - HEA Bookshelf "Intense doesn't begin to cover it. I cried. I sobbed. I bawled. A lot. Constantly. Take my word when I say that you and Emi will become one. I felt every emotion as if I was in the story. I could have been Emi." - Kelli, Alphas, Authors and Books Oh My Emi Hennigan could never have predicted her life would be like this. After wasting more than ten years being "just a friend" to her true love, Nate Wilson, Emi feels more than a little regret. Her future was set, though. Nate loved her as much as she loved him, and they were moving forward with a romance that took them both by surprise. They already knew their bad habits, quirks and the subtle nuances of expressions, but the love was all-encompassing and new to them both. No man could compete, Emi thought, until one night - one evening, one party, one journey, one second alters her course completely. That night, her brother's confident best friend, Jack Holland, comes back into her life with a mission: to spend more time with Emi to prove he is the right man for her. A romance with him is the furthest thing from Emi's mind, though, staying loyal and steadfast to a trusted man that she will always love. In a year's time, though, Emi must learn to make changes she'd never before considered after being impacted by unexpected events. While her fragile spirit takes time to heal, Jack slowly finds a comfortable place in her life. Only time will tell if it's right for Emi - and enough for him. Marilia, the Warlord (Chrysathamere Trilogy Book 1) by Morgan Cole 4.8 Stars (15 Reviews)    Price verified 8 minutes ago

Formerly published under the title "Marilia, the Bastard." Born the bastard daughter of a painted lady, Marilia was told she would live out her days within the walls of her mother's brothel, a companion for the rich men of Tyrace. But after a terrible betrayal, Marilia's world turns upside down. With the help of her twin brother, Annuweth, she flees the only home she's ever known in search of the one man who can offer her a chance at a better life-the Emperor of Navessea's greatest general, a friend of her deceased father. What follows is a journey spanning years, from the streets of the desert city of Tyracium to the splendor of the emperor's keep and the wind-swept, wild island of Svartennos. Along the way, Marilia discovers, for the first time, the gift she has for strategy and warfare -- a world that is forbidden to girls like her When the empire is threatened by a foreign invasion, the defense of Navessea is left in the hands of a cruel and arrogant general no match for the empire's enemy. With the fate of her new home and her family hanging in the balance, Marilia swears to use all her courage and cunning to do whatever she can to help repel the invasion -- if she can convince anyone to follow her. The struggle that follows will test her to her core and lead her back to the past she thought she had escaped. Facing treachery within her own ranks as well as a devious enemy commander, Marilia will need all the help she can get, even if it means doing something her brother may never forgive -- making a deal with the man who murdered her father. Inspired by The Song of Achilles and Ender's Game, Marilia, the Warlord is a blend of the epic and the personal, a story of romance, envy, the rivalry between brother and sister, and one woman's painful discovery that her childhood dreams weren't quite what she imagined.

NAM: Story of the Vietnam Generation (a novel) by Mel Smith (First Steps Publishing, Oregon) 4.6 Stars (28 Reviews)    Price verified 8 minutes ago

A riveting, historically accurate tale of war's horror, impossible love, and ultimate redemption. This is the Vietnam generation's story. Through battle, love's heartbreak, and unbelievable loss, follow the lives of three Vietnam War combatants: a North Vietnamese patriot and two untested American boys, as they deal with the legacy of their nations' tragedy. A historically accurate, riveting account of war, its personal cost and lingering aftermath. It was the sixties. We were the baby boomers and our fathers had fought in World War II -- the heroes who saved the world from tyranny. It was our obligation to serve, as they had. To duck service, was not an option; not if you believed in life in America, the American way, and family values. ? ? ? "No, Cam... I'm right about Vietnam and World War II," he said, pointing the two fingers holding his cigarette at me like darts. "You'd better have a damn good reason to ask a man to put his life on the line 'cause there's no greater sacrifice he can make. Our fathers had Hitler, Mussolini, Tojo to fight... some of the biggest evil the world has ever known. They really were fighting for freedom and our way of life. Losing wasn't an option. "What did we have?... Huh? What the [*] did we have to fight for? Not a goddamn thing! We went because we were Americans... because we were asked by our country to go... young men always have been. So we went... and we died. That's bravery and sacrifice above and beyond the call, my friend. Dyin' for nothin'... that's a hell of a thing to ask of a man." ? ? ? "NAM, The Story of a Generation" is a tale of times that defined a generation: the counter culture that grew out of it; commitment without conscience; love in impossible circumstances; the unimaginable horror of war, healing hope, and renewal. The Vietnam War is the common thread that binds together the lives and fortunes of the three main characters. An epic novel about a generation and the conflict that changed two nations.

The Wake Up (The Seers Book 1) by Angela Panayotopulos 4.4 Stars (35 Reviews)    Price verified 36 minutes ago

What if you could see the angelic or demonic manifestations of people's characters in mirrors? And what if, in your world, this gift was fatal? Since early childhood, Lexi has repressed a rare ability to See. For most of her life, and from most people who know her, this is a well-kept secret. Raised by a family of mirror-makers, glass-blowers, and wolves, Lexi trains herself to See selectively, plagued by her otherness. She comes of age when the nation's leader bans man-made reflective surfaces, plunging the nation into a dystopia where government agencies annihilate families like Lexi's and redraw the lines of normalcy, tradition, and trust. As her family breaks apart, Lexi falls for a man whose secrets run even deeper than hers. Betrayal and deceit ignite dangerous consequences in a world of blurring realities. Caught up in a battle as old as time itself, the last mirror-maker must choose between the safety of compliance and the lethal truth that could rouse her world from darkness. THE WAKE UP is a modern-day parable about love, truth, and self-discovery. It examines how our choices determine the manner in which we live before we die, and how we stop fearing the monsters beneath the bed once we discover them within us.

America Rising by Tom Paine 4.5 Stars (92 Reviews)    Price verified 8 minutes ago

When an old friend of Josh Henson's is found beaten to death in the parking garage of the San Francisco radio station where he works, the former newspaper reporter turned Internet investigator is drawn from his home in the bucolic Florida Keys into a world of political maneuvering, intimidation and assassination, all parts of a battle not only for control of the country but for its very soul. In a novel that anticipated the Occupy and Move Your Money movements, Henson begins covering a campaign to take back America from the corporate and political elites that have hijacked it for their own purposes and profit. As he does, he is drawn into another battle, this one fought quietly and without quarter by a shadowy group of men and women who bring their own "particular set of skills" to bear against forces that will stop at nothing in defense of wealth and power. America Rising is a novel for our times, a novel of audacity and hope, where "change you can believe in" is more than just a slogan. It is not a screed. It's a story of people banding together to ensure, in the words of Abraham Lincoln, that "government of the people, by the people and for the people will not perish from the earth."

"You know, my parents didn't give me much advice about relationships, but my mother told me that we should never go to bed upset with one another." Talvi reached an arm out to invite Annika to curl up against his chest next to his heart. "Aww, that's a sweet thing to say," she said as she cozied up in the crook of his arm. "What did your dad tell you?" "He said to make sure the sofa was comfortable, just in case." Talvi Marinossian has slain maenads and fought off vampire attacks, but nothing has prepared him for getting involved with one of these forbidden 'Modern Girls'. When he finally tracks down Annika it's obvious that she's changed since her recent adventure in his homeland. It's not just that her spirits have fallen; it's also clear that she's not ready to embrace the next chapter in her life. He tries to persuade her to open up to him, but she finds it difficult since he won't even explain how he earns a living, why he has a secret cell phone, or the reason he keeps another woman's handkerchief in his pocket. Instead of relying on Talvi to help her adjust, Annika delves into her music and her job, and it isn't long before the new lovers find themselves completely out of sync with one another. Just when they start to find their rhythm, Talvi is called away on business and whisks Annika off to Paris for what is supposed to be a working vacation. But one bad decision leads to another, and the chaos that ensues may cost someone their life. Awakening Avery (A Second Chance Romance Book 3) by Laurie Lewis (Willowsport Press) 4.5 Stars (59 Reviews)    Price verified 8 minutes ago

"You're depressed," the doctor declared. "Ya think?" is author Avery Elkins Thompson's sarcastic response. She can't pull out from the malaise that set in following her husband's untimely death, and her adult children fear they are losing her too. She can't write, and questions about their father's death leave the family mired in pain. "We need a healing place," her oldest son tells her, suggesting she find it on Anna Maria Island, Florida, a former family vacation spot. When Avery returns to Baltimore to sell the family's waterfront condo, she meets rodeo-ers-turned-real-estate-brokers Teddie and Rider Davis, and Avery's quiet life will never be the same again. The Davises help Avery arrange a short-term house swap with widower Gabriel Carson from Anna Maria, whose overprotective parenting has resulted in two self-centered, twenty-something daughters. Avery and Gabriel are in for the summer of their lives as they step into one another's messy, complicated worlds. Still, venturing out on her own again is challenging for Avery, whose experiences at the Ringling's magnificent Ca d'Zan mansion, and with the quirky characters she meets there, eventually awaken her to truths she desperately needs to remember -- that God has not forgotten her, and as crazy as life can be, it is possible to laugh and love again.

Lingeria: Book One of One by Daniel Kozuh 4.6 Stars (19 Reviews)    Price verified 8 minutes ago

LINGERIA: A wondrous world of centaurs, goblins, elves, knights, bounty hunters, giant centipedes, angry bookies, four-armed Yetis, and a single wizard. There is just one problem - Lingeria shouldn't exist. It is the product of acclaimed, and depressed, author Norman Halliday So, how did Norman come to be sleeping on the couch of one of his fiction characters? And why are Norman's novels revered as Lingerian scripture? Also, why does all of Lingeria believe Norman to be God? Actually, a better question is... Who s this cruel wizard, about whom Norman never wrote, that seized power over the land? But first we should probably do something about the giant black cloud that sucks the life out of everything it passes over. Okay, so there is more than one problem. Joining Norman to untangle the mess that Lingeria has become is a lonely runt named Roe; Tahra, a mood mercenary; an anonymous goblin, and a blind librarian. With heroes like these, stopping Lingeria from being wiped out of existence should be as easy as fighting a hairless sewer ape. "This book takes every fantasy expectation, turns it upside down, and shakes its pockets for loose change. I highly recommend this one." - The Witty And Sarcastic Bookclub "It's hard to believe this is a debut novel! I smiled through the entire process of reading this book. The author has nailed the caricature of an alcoholic fantasy novelist who's grown to hate his own creation... I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by this one and I hope a sequel is forthcoming! " - Chet Sandberg, author of the Norse Gods and Monsters

BEYOND ALL LIMITS: America's No. 1 Assassin is Back in Action (Mark Cole Book 3) by J.T. Brannan (Grey Arrow Publishing) 4.4 Stars (119 Reviews)    Price verified 8 minutes ago

The USS Gerald R. Ford is America's newest and most powerful aircraft carrier, an incredible mobile weapons platform that can spread US influence across the globe. But just as she is about to enter joint exercises with the Chinese navy, there is a military coup which results in a new Chinese government led by the megalomaniacal General Wu, who immediately orders the launch of the feared 'Eastern Wind' anti-ship missile. The strike leaves the US carrier crippled in the middle of the East China Sea, her crew of thousands held hostage by further missile strikes. The US military is unable to respond, leaving China free to attack and reclaim Taiwan, with other nations also in Wu's sights. Due to the threat of nuclear reprisals, US President Ellen Abrams cannot order a conventional military response, and so she calls on Force One, a shadowy covert action group led by Mark Cole, to avert this global catastrophe. Against tremendous odds, Force One must infiltrate China, a police state home to the world's largest standing military, and rescue the remaining members of her old government from the depths of Beijing's Forbidden City, while Cole also tries to assassinate General Wu. But when the situation further deteriorates, rumors of the secret 'Great Wall' project are confirmed - under the remote Taihang mountains is a five thousand mile tunnel network hiding China's huge nuclear stockpile, which Wu now controls. And Cole knows that if he doesn't stop the man in time, it won't be just the crew of the USS Ford that is at risk; the whole world will be threatened with total annihilation.
