The Markson family is dealing with a personal apocalypse when the world plunges into its own. Zoe is set to graduate high school in a few short weeks, but the celebration is bitter sweet. She comes home everyday to her mother being whittled away at by the cancer that is spreading through her body. Her friends stopped coming around after the diagnosis, and Zoe's only confidant is her brother, Carl, who has his own way of dealing with emotions. After school one-day things go from bad to worse. The dead are rising and the world is falling. Thankfully, the Markson family is prepared in weaponry and skill. Between the blood and guts there is family and sacrifices. There is evil and there is insanity. The past comes back to haunt, and the future looks bleak. But is there hope?

Marine Anthropogenic Litter by Melanie Bergmann (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 15 minutes ago

This book describes how man-made litter, primarily plastic, has spread into the remotest parts of the oceans and covers all aspects of this pollution problem from the impacts on wildlife and human health to socio-economic and political issues. Marine litter is a prime threat to marine wildlife, habitats and food webs worldwide. The book illustrates how advanced technologies from deep-sea research, microbiology and mathematic modelling as well as classic beach litter counts by volunteers contributed to the broad awareness of marine litter as a problem of global significance. The authors summarise more than five decades of marine litter research, which receives growing attention after the recent discovery of great oceanic garbage patches and the ubiquity of microscopic plastic particles in marine organisms and habitats. In 16 chapters, authors from all over the world have created a universal view on the diverse field of marine litter pollution, the biological impacts, dedicated research activities, and the various national and international legislative efforts to combat this environmental problem. They recommend future research directions necessary for a comprehensive understanding of this environmental issue and the development of efficient management strategies. This book addresses scientists, and it provides a solid knowledge base for policy makers, NGOs, and the broader public.

Handbook of Contact Mechanics: Exact Solutions of Axisymmetric Contact Problems by Valentin L. Popov (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 4 hours ago

This open access book contains a structured collection of the complete solutions of all essential axisymmetric contact problems. Based on a systematic distinction regarding the type of contact, the regime of friction and the contact geometry, a multitude of technically relevant contact problems from mechanical engineering, the automotive industry and medical engineering are discussed. In addition to contact problems between isotropic elastic and viscoelastic media, contact problems between transversal-isotropic elastic materials and functionally graded materials are addressed, too. The optimization of the latter is a focus of current research especially in the fields of actuator technology and biomechanics. The book takes into account adhesive effects which allow access to contact-mechanical questions about micro- and nano-electromechanical systems.Solutions of the contact problems include both the relationships between the macroscopic force, displacement and contact length, as well as the stress and displacement fields at the surface and, if appropriate, within the half-space medium. Solutions are always obtained with the simplest available method - usually with the method of dimensionality reduction (MDR) or approaches which use the solution of the non-adhesive normal contact problem to solve the respective contact problem.

Slugs, Snails and Casino Tales: True Stories of Casino Life by Rowntree Travis 3.9 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

The murky world of casinos and the even murkier world of the staff and punters who work and play in them, has always been a tight-lipped secret, securely protected behind closed doors and covert threats. Real life in a UK casino is nothing, absolutely nothing, like the movies or anything you have ever seen, read or heard about. Until now! If you enjoyed the movie 'HUMAN TRAFFIC' (1999), which explored the themes of coming of age, drug culture and relationships, with scenes that provoked social commentary, you'll love SLUGS, SNAILS AND CASINO TALES. With a hint of 'CASINO ROYALE' (1967), 'TRAIN SPOTTING' (1996) and '24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE' (2002), this work of fiction is based on a combination of real events, rumours, urban legends and the imaginings of the author. With an added dash of 'OCEANS ELEVEN' (2001), SLUGS, SNAILS AND CASINO TALES is a merry-go-round of tall tales based on actual events that will shock and entertain. The genre is strictly ADULT due to the profanities that are frequently used throughout (as they occur in real life) but never gratuitous in nature.

A New Witness for God (Vol. 1-3): Study on Mormon Church and the Book of Mormon (Complete Edition) by B. H. Roberts (e-artnow) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 15 minutes ago

A New Witness for God is a three volume treatise by B. H. Roberts, one of the leaders in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who wrote this work as a recapitulation of 75 years of the existence of "Mormonism" and "Mormon Church." The author's purpose was to prove that the world was in need of a new God's witness, and that Joseph Smith, a great modern prophet, was that witness. Dividing the work in thesis he firstly proves that the world was in necessity of a New Witness; then moves on to the state of the Christian church and how it was destroyed and there was an apostasy from the Christian religion; third thesis deals with the Scriptures declaring that the Gospel will be restored to the Earth; final thesis suggest that Joseph Smith is the New Witness for God who re-established the Church of Jesus Christ on Earth. Following these theses is the study of the Book of Mormon.

Choosing Life: My Father’s Journey in Film from Hollywood to Hiroshima by Leslie A. Sussan (BookBaby) 4.8 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified one minute ago

In 1946, with the war over and Japan occupied, 2nd Lt. Herbert Sussan received a plum assignment. He would get to use his training as a cinematographer and join a Strategic Bombing Survey crew to record the results of the atomic bombings in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. From his first arrival in Nagasaki, he knew that something completely novel and appalling had happened and that he had to preserve a record of the results, especially the ongoing suffering of those affected by the bomb (known as hibakusha) even months later. When the U.S. government decided that the gruesome footage would not be "of interest" to the American public and therefore classified it top secret, he spent decades arguing for its release. His last wish was that his ashes be scattered at ground zero in Hiroshima. The author, his daughter, followed his footsteps in 1987, met survivors he had filmed more than 40 years before. And found that she met there a father she never really knew in life. This book recounts Herbert Sussan's experiences (drawn directly from an oral history he left behind), his daughter's quest to understand what he saw in Japan, and the stories of some of the survivors with whose lives both father and daughter intersected. This nuclear legacy captures the ripples of the atomic bombing down through decades and generations. The braided tale brings human scale and understanding to the horrors of nuclear war and the ongoing need for healing and peacemaking.

Bible Character Daily Devotions For A 366-day Calendar by James Thomas Lee Jr 4.8 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified 15 hours ago

The Bible is an honest Book, so it does not try to protect the guilty person or sugarcoat his or her story. The Bible also does not try to distort or exaggerate the truth to advance the Lord's agenda in the earth. For those reasons, a person can critically examine Bible characters, trust what he or she is reading, and learn very much about God, His Word, and His Principles for living. For convenience and ease of use, the titles of all of the devotions in this book begin with the Bible character's name. That means that a reader can look up his or her favorite Bible character in the Index by name and quickly locate all of the devotions that have been written about that person. The Index also contains a complete list of every Bible passage that has been referenced, so a reader can easily view those by looking under Bible Verse References. While an obvious attempt has not been made to match certain devotions to certain dates, the devotions between December 19th and December 25th are about Jesus' seven statements from the cross. Among the many Bible characters that have been included in this book are Adam with 4 separate devotions, Abraham with 4 separate devotions, Daniel with 3 separate devotions, David with 13 separate devotions, Elijah with 7 separate devotions, Elisha with 5 separate devotions, Ezekiel with 6 separate devotions, Hezekiah with 4 separate devotions, Isaac with 4 separate devotions, Jacob with 6 separate devotions, Jesus with 50 separate devotions, John the Baptist with 4 separate devotions, Joshua with 5 separate devotions, Moses with 7 separate devotions, Paul with 11 separate devotions, Peter with 8 separate devotions, Solomon with 8 separate devotions, and 217 more. The hope is that each devotion will be encouraging and inspirational for the reader. But more than that, the goal of every word in this book is to exalt Christ and to proclaim Bible truth.

Government Beers by Guy Beaver 4.2 Stars (10 Reviews)    Price verified 10 minutes ago

It all starts with a smudged print-out, which puts WESLEY LARKIN, a NASCAR-loving 7-year-old diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer on a collision course with an unlikely team of NASA nerds that accidentally leave microbrewery plans in a huge government proposal. The result is a heroic triumph of astronomical proportions! GORDON MILLER gets caught up in a vortex of circumstance as he becomes the accidental program manager of a 3,000 person government program. "So let me get this straight. You're a rocket scientist, who runs a satellite program for NASA, who also works on race cars, starts charitable foundations, volunteers to keep score for the York River Tsunamis, and runs a brewery? Is there anything else you do?" asked Wendy, wanting to get her facts straight. "I write Haikus," responded Gordon. "And the brewery part needs some caveats." The story takes place at NASA Langley Research Center and surrounding historical areas of Hampton Roads, Virginia. The quirky character crew has idiosyncrasies that include thinking in haiku poems, chiropractic dependencies, and time-travel obsession. Fighter jets from Langley Air Force Base and race cars at Langley Speedway frame the story as the plot dilemma becomes the rationalization and discovery of government funded beers used to help WESLEY fight for his life. "... I enjoyed it! I hope that those who read it realize it is not only fun, but an excellent and very important lesson, too." --Dr. John Switzer, The Liberty Professor

Researching Elites and Power: Theory, Methods, Analyses (Methodos Series Book 16) by Francois Denord (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 15 minutes ago

This open access book describes how elite studies theoretically and methodologically construct their object, i.e. how particular conceptualizations of elites are turned into research practice using different methods for collecting, dealing with and analyzing empirical data. The first of four sections focuses on what Mills named the power elite and includes Bourdieu's field of power. The second section addresses studies of the domain of economic power, whereas the third section centers on research on elite education. The fourth and last section highlights research on symbolic power, either within social fields or as a dimension of social structure at large, areas where recognition is essential. All sections comprise empirical case studies of elites and power, whereby each of which makes explicit the various methodological choices made in the research process. Through focusing on methodological approaches for the study of elites and power and on how such approaches relate to each other as well as to the theoretical perspectives that underpin them, this book will be a valuable source for social scientists.

Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives by Josie Brown (Signal Press) 4.3 Stars (17 Reviews)    Price verified one day ago

The divorce of a community's "perfect couple" exposes the cracks in the marriages of their neighbors with life-altering consequences. Suburbia is a jungle, filled with lots of vicious creatures. Take the Paradise Heights Women's League board. Lyssa Harper should have warned golden-haired DILF du jour Harry Wilder what he was getting into when she invited him to meet the mommies who run their suburban, gated community. At least he brought cupcakes. Since meeting the former Master-of-the-Universe turned stay-at-home single dad, Lyssa has been his domestic Sherpa, teaching him the ins and outs of suburban life. She just didn't realize her friends would show up at his house unannounced with casseroles, leopard-print bikini briefs, and plans to rearrange his kitchen cabinets. The truth is, if Harry and his wife, the neighborhood's "perfect couple," can call it quits, what does that mean for everyone else? Lyssa's husband, Ted, is a great father, but he pays less attention to her than her Pilates-pumped momtourage. Her friends gossip about the neighbors while ignoring their own problems: infertility, infidelity, and eating disorders. When Harry sets boundaries with his new fan club, he is exiled from the neighborhood's in-clique. But Lyssa refuses to snub him. What she never expects is the explosive impact her ongoing friendship with Harry will have on her close-knit pals -- and on her marriage. "Josie Brown is a skilled observer whose clever dialogue and feisty style make for truly entertaining reading." -- Jackie Collins, author, Hollywood Wives REVIEWS AND PRAISE "Fans of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES will love this story.. The quick pace and snappy dialogue make this a fun read." --Romantic Times Just in time for summer, Brown's novel offers an enjoyable take on suburban California family life, complete with mommy cliques, rebel teenagers, and, of course, lots of adultery. Changing Habits of Mind: A Brain-Based Theory of Psychotherapy by Zoltan Gross (Routledge) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Changing Habits of Mind presents a theory of personality that integrates homeostatic dynamics of the brain with self-processes, emotionality, cultural adaptation, and personal reality. Informed by the author's brain-based, relational psychotherapeutic practice, the book discusses the brain's evolutionary growth, the four information-processing areas of the brain, and the cortex in relationship to the limbic system. Integrating the different experiences of sensory and non-sensory processes in the brain, the text introduces a theory of personality currently lacking in psychotherapy research that integrates neurobiology and psychology for the first time. Readers will learn how to integrate psychodynamic processes with cognitive behavioral techniques, while clinical vignettes exemplify the interaction of neurophysiological process with a range of psychological variables including homeostasis, developmental family dynamics, and culture. Changing Habits of Mind expands the psychotherapist's perspective, exploring the important links between an integrated theory of personality and effective clinical practice.

Marijuana: Fight the Power! by D. Farang Price verified one day ago

Marijuana's unfair, long-standing negative stigma is refuted and debunked in this large manuscript, thanks in large part to the plant's vast array of scientifically proven medicinal benefits. Marijuana - Fight the Power! - succinctly and thoroughly covers the origins, roots and history of marijuana suppression and demonization, starting in the 1930's. The book closely examines the plethora of proven medicinal benefits derived from the two main types of marijuana - Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indica. The concomitant advantages of the plant are the key to educating and changing the still-persistent (and wrong-minded) anti-marijuana lobby. Most people know about the chemical THC, an active substance in marijuana that gets users "high." But recently, attention has shifted to another compound found in marijuana, called Cannabidiol (CBD). While many otherwise competent (albeit deluded) health professionals find it difficult to look past certain side effects of THC, CBD doesn't appear to present that problem, as users don't get "stoned." Moreover, evidence of CBD's vast medicinal benefits continues to grow by leaps and bounds. With CBD medicinal products set to become widely available in pharmaceutical stores and herbal preparations, more university medical students and pro-active scientists are taking a close look at CBD-drug interactions. Medical marijuana has been conclusively proven to help people who suffer from anger, anxiety, anorexia, arthritis, asthma, chronic pain, fatigue, insomnia, Graves disease, MS (Multiple Sclerosis), PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and loss of appetite - to name but a few chronic diseases and potentially debilitating issues that the herb has a positive impact upon. Moreover, marijuana's plethora of promising medical attributes include treating cancer patients (often facilitating permanent remission), ADHD, sexual disorders, fibromyalgia, insulin resistance, osteoporosis, menopause and anorexia. Marijuana (aka marihuana, ...

Handing over: Nlp-Based Activities for Language Learning by Jane Revell 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 15 minutes ago

Many teachers who know about Neuro-Linguistic Programming and use it in their lives have said to us: Yes, bu t... what do I actually do with N LP in the language classroom? We wrote Handing Over for them. It is the companion volume to In Your Hands, the introduction to NLP for teaching and learning. Both books are written for teachers (although we know of schools where In Your Hands is being used with advanced learners and companies where it is used on training courses). Handing Over is more specifically concerned with applying the concepts and teachings o f NLP to the language classroom and contains practical lessons and ideas to use with language learners. It is written for the teaching of English as a foreign language, but most of the suggestions are relevant to the teaching of any language. Although many of the activities can be done without knowing about NLP, an understanding o f the basic concepts will allow you to appreciate the reasons behind them and help students get more from them. We have not repeated the information from In Your Hands, although we have given a brief resume of some of the key ideas where they provide a rationale for the activities. The book is organised into sections corresponding to key concepts in NLP. All the activities have been used successfully by one or both o f us (and others) in a variety o f situations, with individuals and classes of between six and 60 teenagers, adults, trainers, teacher trainees, business people, and some of them with up to 700 teachers at a time. Although activities appear in one section, the holistic nature of NLP means that many of them could equally well come under a different heading. The contents list at the back o f the book gives an overview, but the best approach is to read through and decide how you can best integrate activities into your teaching.

Terror at Sea: Lifting the lid on modern piracy by Douglas Stewart (Lume Books) 4.0 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Piracy. Although often associated with the antiquated figures of picture books and blockbuster films, modern-day pirates are a very real threat, terrorizing our seas and claiming lives. 'Even as you read these lines, somewhere on the high seas mariners are being attacked by armed pirates, their faces masked, their weapons deadly.' So begins Douglas Stewart's introduction to the unimaginably dangerous world of modern piracy. Attackers are armed with rocket-launchers and automatic machine guns, and their victims may be murdered, tortured, seized as hostages, or simply dumped overboard. Perhaps most worrying of all is the recent trend for use of these ill-gotten gains to fund international terrorism. Difficult to police and on the rise, Stewart lifts the lid on a side to piracy that is often underrepresented in the media, but directly affecting the reign of terror we are all affected by. Terror at Sea tells of disappearing phantom ships and of a cigarette scam run by a fraudster from New Jersey, the story of MV Estonia and many other disasters at sea. As it enters the mysterious world of the Triads, some of the most bloody, cunning and lucrative attacks, frauds and schemes of the past twenty years are brought to the page in an exciting and refreshing way. Praise for Douglas Stewart "Do read this superb novel" - Sunday Independent Douglas Stewart did not start writing professionally until he had become an international lawyer. Ever since, he has juggled writing with legal issues in the UK and USA before taking early retirement, giving him more time to focus on writing. After a stint in Las Vegas, he is now back in Europe where he lives with his wife.

A Place To Be Killed: Tourism Alert Thailand by D. Farang 3.7 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

A tourist dies tragically and unnecessarily in Thailand of unnatural causes almost every day and for Australians in particular, "The Land of Smiles" (which becomes an oxymoron for the victim's families) is the deadliest destination of them all. But why should you care? Because it may be someone you know that suffers a tragedy there next, or God forbid someone close to you or yourself. I know a mother in Australia who had to go with her husband and two children to Thailand in order to pick up her 24 year old daughter in a body bag. Needless to say the family will never return to the country. With the world her oyster, the quickly rising young business executive died on a motorcycle in Phuket, hit by a Thai man going the wrong way on the road. But that's fairly normal in Thailand - for motorcycles, cars and trucks to drive in the opposite direction from everyone else. That potentially life-saving knowledge wasn't known to her and her fiancee - who survived the violent collision, still traumatized to this day to be certain. It's but one Thailand tourist tragedy in a veritable plethora of them world-wide. British subjects also die with alarming frequency in the country, in almost every way imaginable. After marrying a Thai and living in Thailand for ten years I decided to write about WHY so many tourists die tragically in Thailand of unnatural, avoidable causes. It's necessary to get the word out on the nature of the myriad of key tourist fatality factors, so people can learn the truth about what's really happening (in the otherwise wonderful country). THE BOTTOM LINE ? Proactive-minded tourists can avoid all the inherently lurking dangers in the beautiful country by educating themselves, others and concomitantly adjusting many at-risk behaviors as needed. After all, no one should get killed on their hard-earned holiday in Thailand, but far too many still do. With up to 25 million foreigners (farang) visiting the country annually, most visitors come home happy ...

The Great Boer War by Arthur Conan Doyle (E-BOOKARAMA) 3.7 Stars (117 Reviews)    Price verified one day ago

"The Great Boer War" is a book written by Arthur Conan Doyle first published on 23 october 1900. Arthur Conan Doyle made his reputation as a novelist, but far stranger than fiction is the creator of Sherlock Holmes' tale of the Boer War in South Africa. The then 40-year-old novelist wanted to see the war first hand as a soldier, but the Victorian army balked at having a popular author wielding a pen in its ranks. The army did accept him as a doctor and Doyle was knighted in 1902 for his work with a field hospital in Bloemfontein. Doyle's vivid account of the battles is in part thanks to the eye-witness accounts he got from his patients. Doyle has thoroughly mastered the details of the campaign, and presents them in a form that can be easily understood. Furthermore, his descriptions of the various engagements are masterpieces of graphic writing. It is interesting and entertaining when a great novelist turns to telling great history.

The Book of Mormon: An Account Written by the Hand of Mormon, Upon Plates Taken from the Plates of Nephi by Joseph Smith (e-artnow) 4.4 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

The Book of Mormon is a sacred text of the Latter Day Saint movement, which contains writings of ancient prophets who lived on the American continent from approximately 2200 BC to AD 421. The Book of Mormon is the earliest of the unique writings of the Latter-day Saint movement, the denominations of which typically regard the text primarily as scripture, and secondarily as a historical record of God's dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas. According to Smith's account and the book's narrative, the Book of Mormon was originally written in otherwise unknown characters referred to as "reformed Egyptian" engraved on golden plates. Smith said that the last prophet to contribute to the book, a man named Moroni, buried it in the Hill Cumorah in present-day Manchester, New York, before his death, and then appeared in a vision to Smith in 1827 as an angel, revealing the location of the plates, and instructing him to translate the plates into English for use in the restoration of Christ's true church in the latter days

Audacious Education Purposes: How Governments Transform the Goals of Education Systems by Fernando M. Reimers (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 15 minutes ago

This open access book offers a comparative study of eight ambitious national reforms that sought to create opportunities for students to gain the necessary breath of skills to thrive in a rapidly changing world. It examines how national governments transform education systems to provide students opportunities to develop such skills. It analyses comprehensive education reforms in Brazil, Finland, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Portugal and Russia and yields original and important insights on the process of educational change. The analysis of these 21st century skills reforms shows that reformers followed approaches which are based on the five perspectives: cultural, psychological, professional, institutional and political. Most reforms relied on institutional and political perspectives. They highlight the systemic nature of the process of educational change, and the need for alignment and coherence among the various elements of the system in order. They underscore the importance of addressing the interests of various stakeholders of the education system in obtaining the necessary impetus to initiate and sustain change. In contrast, as the book shows, the use of a cultural and psychological frame proved rarer, missing important opportunities to draw on systematic analysis of emerging demands for schools and on cognitive science to inform the changes in the organization of instruction. Drawing on a rich array of sources and evidence the book provides a careful account of how education reform works in practice.

THE ROLL-CALL by Arnold Bennett (Musaicum Books) 4.3 Stars (19 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

This story concerns the young life of Clayhanger's stepson, George. George Edwin Cannon - he soon drops the surname Clayhanger, given to him upon his mother's marriage - is an architect, and represents what his stepfather Edwin Clayhanger wished to become. The characters of Edwin and Hilda are not developed further in this book: Edwin - now elevated to Alderman - appears only briefly. The central character displays an unattractive arrogance because of the wealth behind him. In an early chapter, he thinks about adding electric light to his London dwelling, and decides that he - or rather, his stepfather - can well afford it. Bennett seems to have felt that the children of the successful bourgeoisie, unless their excesses are suppressed as Edwin's were, will become spoilt. Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) was an English journalist, novelist, and writer. After working as a rent collector and solicitor's clerk, Bennett won a writing contest which convinced him to become a journalist. He later turned to the writing of novels, including his most famous Clayhanger and Anna of the five towns.
