Remarkable Things by Deirdre Palmer (The Patcham Press) 4.5 Stars (32 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

If you like the novels of Joanna Trollope and Elizabeth Jane Howard then you'll love this wonderful novel of secrets, lies and embroidery: 5* reviewer It's never too late to find out who you really are... When Gus Albourne inherits Aunt Augusta's cottage in the Sussex village of Hangburton, he finds himself with more than a property on his hands. Why did Augusta make Gus, her adoptive nephew, her sole beneficiary, while his late brother, Robert, the natural son, was left out of the will? Robert's widow, Elspeth, and disabled daughter, Jenny, are far more deserving than Gus, but when he tries to share the legacy with Elspeth, she refuses, hinting at a long-ago family feud involving Augusta. It's a mystery, one which Gus must solve in order to make amends for his aunt's unfairness and help Elspeth. But an unexpected find in the cottage brings a new twist, leading him to the questionable story of his birth mother, Catherine. With his own history fast unravelling before his eyes, the last thing Gus needs is a relationship, but when he meets Millie Hope it's impossible to stay away. Millie feels the same about Gus, but until she finds her missing daughter, Karen, her life must stay on hold. When Millie's ex-husband dies, finding Karen becomes even more urgent. But there's more than one barrier to the search. For a start, there's Jack, Karen's terrifying ex-boyfriend. And then there's the reason Karen disappeared in the first place, which is less certain as time goes on. Solving someone else's problems seems a whole lot easier than solving your own, as Gus and Millie discover. But just as the curtain seems set to fall on their respective dramas, more shocks are in store, and Gus faces the hardest decision of his life.

UNDERDOG THINKING: A Bold Idea, a Business Adventure and 101 Lessons Learned Along the Way by Atul Vir 4.5 Stars (22 Reviews)    Price verified 7 minutes ago

Underdog Thinking is real-life business adventure story that follows the journey of an Indian Immigrant to the U.S. who was told he "didn't know a damn thing about American business." But as opportunity would have it, a short time later he found himself an accidental entrepreneur with a front row ticket to the ins and outs of launching and growing a business. He was flying high on his growing success -- until a fateful moment when everything changed. As businesses rise and fall to the tune of supply and demand, sometimes the harshest betrayals come out of nowhere, when you least expect it -- as do the surprising sparks of hope. When an unforeseen circumstance initiates a chain of events that leave him at a crossroads he must make the tough call: to give in and give up, or push through and win. CEO, business ethics thought leader, speaker and author Atul Vir has lived that story. And even in the darkest moments when failure seemed most imminent, he drew on the work ethic instilled from his earliest days, and his commitment to do right by his customers -- to bring his dream up from the ashes and back to life. In his new book, Underdog Thinking, Vir inspires readers to face any challenge that comes their way -- with practical business lessons for every step of the journey gleaned from his experience as both an immigrant building a business and as CEO of Equator Appliances for more than 25 years. The book dives into current themes dominating the business landscape, including: global business, overcoming failure, bootstrapping, securing financing, immigration and what innovation truly means. While many people offer sage advice on these topics, Vir's lessons are paired with a unique, captivating story and more than two decades of entrepreneurial expertise in an industry dominated by much bigger players -- major multinational corporations.

The Other Side of the Moon: The Life of David Niven by Sheridan Morley (Dean Street Press) 4.2 Stars (104 Reviews)    Price verified one day ago

'A highly readable work... Niven emerges as gallant and gracious.' Chicago Tribune Sheridan Morley wrote this biography of the consummate on-screen English gentleman after speaking to over 150 of Niven's friends and colleagues (only Rex Harrison refused). The result is a picture which both supports and contradicts the charming vagabond persona depicted in Niven's own bestselling memoirs. While millions throughout his life were enchanted by Niven's happy-go-lucky charisma and world-class anecdotage, he was in many respects a private figure, haunted by a fear of failure, and a victim of several key tragedies in his personal life. Morley's biography is a warm, appreciative but perceptive account which captures both sides of one of Hollywood's most enduringly lovable figures. 'A compassionate account that goes past the blithe persona... yet, there is much humor -- the actor's and his biographer's -- in this notable book' Publishers Weekly 'Head and shoulders above the average showbiz biography... He understands many of Niven's deeper feelings' John Mortimer, Sunday Times 'A well-told story... the darker side as well as the mask of a complex and perhaps desperate character. He was a life-enhancer off-screen as well as on' The Times 'Shrewd and pleasing; shows how dark Niven's moon could be' Alexander Walker, Evening Standard

Chiara has presided over the espresso machine at Bar Birbo for as long as anyone can remember. In Santa Lucia, this is the only place to go for a cappuccino served with a side of gossip. The town's residents rely on each other and feel almost like a family, but their secrets are kept well hidden. While romance is in the air for some, the truth behind the love affairs is far more complicated than anyone can imagine. When everyone has ulterior motives and unspoken desires, it's only a matter of time before things finally come to a head. And unfortunately for the townspeople, the revelations could prove deadly. Can the residents of Santa Lucia survive the inferno of their own making? Or will they burn in the flames?

Barchester Towers: Victorian Classic from the prolific English novelist, known for The Palliser Novels, The Prime Minister, The Warden, Doctor ... by Anthony Trollope (Createspace Independent Publishing Platform) 4.3 Stars (325 Reviews)    Price verified 19 hours ago

Barchester Towers is the second novel in Anthony Trollope's series known as the "Chronicles of Barsetshire". Among other things it satirises the then raging antipathy in the Church of England between High Church and Evangelical adherents. Barchester Towers concerns the leading clergy of the cathedral city of Barchester. The much loved bishop having died, all expectations are that his son, Archdeacon Grantly, will succeed him. Instead, owing to the passage of the power of patronage to a new Prime Minister, a newcomer, the far more Evangelical Bishop Proudie, gains the see. His wife, Mrs Proudie, exercises an undue influence over the new bishop, making herself as well as the bishop unpopular with most of the clergy of the diocese. Her interference to veto the reappointment of the universally popular Mr Septimus Harding (protagonist of Trollope's earlier novel, The Warden) as warden of Hiram's Hospital is not well received, even though she gives the position to a needy clergyman, Mr Quiverful, with 14 children to support. Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) was one of the most successful, prolific and respected English novelists of the Victorian era. Some of his best-loved works, collectively known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire, revolve around the imaginary county of Barsetshire. He also wrote perceptive novels on political, social, and gender issues, and on other topical matters. Trollope's literary reputation dipped somewhat during the last years of his life, but he regained the esteem of critics by the mid-twentieth century.

Walden, Slavery in Massachusetts & Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau (Musaicum Books) 4.3 Stars (2,487 Reviews)    Price verified 21 hours ago

"Walden" is a book written by Henry David Thoreau. The work is part personal declaration of independence, social experiment, voyage of spiritual discovery, satire, and manual for self-reliance. First published in 1854, it details Thoreau's experiences over the course of two years, two months, and two days in a cabin he built near Walden Pond, amidst woodland near Concord, Massachusetts. The book compresses the time into a single calendar year and uses passages of four seasons to symbolize human development. Civil Disobedience (Resistance to Civil Government) is an essay that was first published in 1849. In it, Thoreau argues that individuals should not permit governments to overrule or atrophy their consciences, and that they have a duty to avoid allowing such acquiescence to enable the government to make them the agents of injustice. Thoreau was motivated in part by his disgust with slavery and the Mexican-American War. Slavery in Massachusetts" is an 1854 essay based on a speech he gave at an anti-slavery rally at Framingham, Massachusetts, on July 4, 1854, after the re-enslavement in Boston, Massachusetts of fugitive slave Anthony Burns. Henry David Thoreau (1817 - 1862) was an American author, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, historian and leading transcendentalist. He is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay Resistance to Civil Government (also known as Civil Disobedience), an argument for disobedience to an unjust state.

Understanding Willing Participants, Volume 2: Milgram’s Obedience Experiments and the Holocaust by Nestar Russell (Palgrave Macmillan) 4.9 Stars (9 Reviews)    Price verified 7 minutes ago

Horrified by the Holocaust, social psychologist Stanley Milgram wondered if he could recreate the Holocaust in the laboratory setting. Unabated for more than half a century, his (in)famous results have continued to intrigue scholars. Based on unpublished archival data from Milgram's personal collection, volume one of this two-volume set introduces readers to a behind the scenes account showing how during Milgram's unpublished pilot studies he step-by-step invented his official experimental procedure -- how he gradually learnt to transform most ordinary people into willing inflictors of harm. The open access volume two then illustrates how certain innovators within the Nazi regime used the very same Milgram-like learning techniques that with increasing effectiveness gradually enabled them to also transform most ordinary people into increasingly capable executioners of other men, women, and children. Volume two effectively attempts to capture how step-by-step these Nazi innovators attempted to transform the Führer's wish of a Jewish-free Europe into a frightening reality. By the books' end the reader will gain an insight into how the seemingly undoable can become increasingly doable.

Building the American Republic, Volume 2: A Narrative History from 1877 by Jane Dailey (University of Chicago Press) 4.2 Stars (22 Reviews)    Price verified one day ago

Building the American Republic combines centuries of perspectives and voices into a fluid narrative of the United States. Throughout their respective volumes, Harry L. Watson and Jane Dailey take care to integrate varied scholarly perspectives and work to engage a diverse readership by addressing what we all share: membership in a democratic republic, with joint claims on its self-governing tradition. It will be one of the first peer-reviewed American history textbooks to be offered completely free in digital form. Visit buildingtheamericanrepublic.org for more information. The American nation came apart in a violent civil war less than a century after ratification of the Constitution. When it was reborn five years later, both the republic and its Constitution were transformed. Volume 2 opens as America struggles to regain its footing, reeling from a presidential assassination and facing massive economic growth, rapid demographic change, and combustive politics. The next century and a half saw the United States enter and then dominate the world stage, even as the country struggled to live up to its own principles of liberty, justice, and equality. Volume 2 of Building the American Republic takes the reader from the Gilded Age to the present, as the nation becomes an imperial power, rethinks the Constitution, witnesses the rise of powerful new technologies, and navigates an always-shifting cultural landscape shaped by an increasingly diverse population. Ending with the 2016 election, this volume provides a needed reminder that the future of the American republic depends on a citizenry that understands -- and can learn from -- its history.

Les Misérables by Victor Hugo (Pandora's Box Classics) 4.4 Stars (933 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

It has been said that Victor Hugo has a street named after him in virtually every town in France. A major reason for the singular celebrity of this most popular and versatile of the great French writers is Les Misérables (1862). In this story of the trials of the peasant Jean Valjean -- a man unjustly imprisoned, baffled by destiny, and hounded by his nemesis, the magnificently realized, ambiguously malevolent police detective Javert -- Hugo achieves the sort of rare imaginative resonance that allows a work of art to transcend its genre. Les Misérables is at once a tense thriller that contains one of the most compelling chase scenes in all literature, an epic portrayal of the nineteenth-century French citizenry, and a vital drama -- highly particularized and poetic in its rendition but universal in its implications -- of the redemption of one human being. One of the half-dozen greatest novels of the world. -- Upton Sinclair The greatest of all novels. -- Leo Tolstoy Hugo is unquestionably the most powerful talent that has appeared in France in the nineteenth century. -- Fyodor Dostoyevsky I sobbed and wailed and thought [books] were the greatest things. -- Susan Sontag

Building the American Republic, Volume 1: A Narrative History to 1877 by Harry L. Watson (University of Chicago Press) 4.2 Stars (23 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

Building the American Republic combines centuries of perspectives and voices into a fluid narrative of the United States. Throughout their respective volumes, Harry L. It will be one of the first peer-reviewed American history textbooks to be offered completely free in digital form. Visit buildingtheamericanrepublic.org for more information. Volume 1 starts at sea and ends on the battlefield. Beginning with the earliest Americans and the arrival of strangers on the eastern shore, it then moves through colonial society to the fight for independence and the construction of a federalist republic. From there, it explains the renegotiations and refinements that took place as a new nation found its footing, and it traces the actions that eventually rippled into the Civil War. This volume goes beyond famous names and battles to incorporate politics, economics, science, arts, and culture. And it shows that issues that resonate today -- immigration, race, labor, gender roles, and the power of technology -- have been part of the American fabric since the very beginning.

Particle Accelerator Physics (Graduate Texts in Physics) by Helmut Wiedemann (Springer) 4.9 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

This book by Helmut Wiedemann is a well-established, classic text, providing an in-depth and comprehensive introduction to the field of high-energy particle acceleration and beam dynamics. The present 4th edition has been significantly revised, updated and expanded. The newly conceived Part I is an elementary introduction to the subject matter for undergraduate students. Part II gathers the basic tools in preparation of a more advanced treatment, summarizing the essentials of electrostatics and electrodynamics as well as of particle dynamics in electromagnetic fields. Part III is an extensive primer in beam dynamics, followed, in Part IV, by an introduction and description of the main beam parameters and including a new chapter on beam emittance and lattice design. Part V is devoted to the treatment of perturbations in beam dynamics. Part VI then discusses the details of charged particle acceleration. Parts VII and VIII introduce the more advanced topics of coupled beam dynamics and describe very intense beams - a number of additional beam instabilities are introduced and reviewed in this new edition. Part IX is an exhaustive treatment of radiation from accelerated charges and introduces important sources of coherent radiation such as synchrotrons and free-electron lasers. The appendices at the end of the book gather useful mathematical and physical formulae, parameters and units. Solutions to many end-of-chapter problems are given. This textbook is suitable for an intensive two-semester course starting at the senior undergraduate level.
