Ralph Barrington was a very young man when he inherited the run-down Georgian mansion of Redwoods in Winchester. In accordance with Margaret Fitzgerald's will, Ralph was unable to sell his inheritance; therefore he and his teenage daughter, Roselyn, known as Ros, were forced to make the best of things and to live in just a few of the rooms. Ralph's wife, Charlotte, was a depressant: she had cruelly denied Ros at birth, and then, Ros re-meets Andrew Frazer MacFarlane, who has had an equally tragic and difficult beginning to his life; but not only has Andrew got himself entangled with a woman, who is determined never to let him go, but he also harbours a fearful, dark secret.
Set amongst some of Scotland's most dramatic scenery, this is a powerful tale as seen through the eyes of an eighteenth century, former daughter of the house, Marguerite Fitzgerald Campbell, an adventuress during the Jacobite uprisings, who suffered a cruel rape; she had a child. There is a mystery surrounding ...
Ten-year-old Pierre François--otherwise known as Pierre the Fantastic Flying Fish and Pierre the Genius Brain--is an expert at signing his school papers with original names. What he's not good at is a foolproof bladder. Accidents happen, although this is Top Secret information. So when it's time for the entire fifth grade to go to Adventure Camp, a two-night trip in the wilderness, Pierre would rather complain about the fifth grade meanies, dream of mastering the spelling bee with Jedi skills, and devise ways to meet the fascinating new girl in school. But Adventure Camp is coming for him, along with a wet and icy cold front. Can Pierre muster all his courage and wit to survive nature's onslaught of ice, rain, and other liquid fiascos?

The modern era has unfolded in the shadow of the French Revolution. Almost all future revolutionary movements looked back to the Revolution as their predecessor. Its central phrases and cultural symbols, such as La Marseillaise and Liberté, fraternité, égalité, ou la mort, became the clarion call for other major upheavals in modern history, including the Russian Revolution over a century later.
The values and institutions of the Revolution dominate French politics to this day. The Revolution resulted in the suppression of the feudal system, emancipation of the individual, a greater division of landed property, abolition of the privileges of noble birth, and nominal establishment of equality among men. The French Revolution differed from other revolutions in being not only national, for it intended to benefit all humanity.

A Room of One's Own is an extended essay by Virginia Woolf. First published on 24 October 1929, the essay was based on a series of lectures she delivered at Newnham College and Girton College, two women's colleges at Cambridge University in October 1928. While this extended essay in fact employs a fictional narrator and narrative to explore women both as writers of and characters in fiction, the manuscript for the delivery of the series of lectures, titled "Women and Fiction", and hence the essay, are considered non-fiction. The essay is generally seen as a feminist text, and is noted in its argument for both a literal and figural space for women writers within a literary tradition dominated by patriarchy.

In this guide, you will be able to discover:
? What companion planting is and how it can benefit you

Memories of a youthful life lived in a small town in the post-industrial wastelands of the Black Country. But there are memories of darkness, of a cosmic horror that stalked the residents of Sedgley one fateful summer. Memories that drove Dalton into exile, of Lurkers in the shadows carrying his friends off into the celestial underbelly of the cosmos to be experimented on for some eerie purpose. Ten years later Dalton has returned, so have the memories, and so ...

Examining the nature of law and grace, the novel elaborates upon the history of France, the architecture and urban design of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, antimonarchism, justice, religion, and the types and nature of romantic and familial love. A relentless and humorous thriller where every move is a false start and every clue a red herring. Jack faces the Hong Kong mafia and is mixed up in a deadly turf war. The knives and cleavers are out. Engaged to protect a beautiful Chinese girl, the daughter of a Triad Dragon Master, Jack fouls up big time when she is abducted from under his nose. A page turner you can't put down.
Reviews: The latest instalment of Jack Hamma and his detective agency is currently my favourite. Whilst reading this I had a thought, the style of writing is similar to Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently, but slightly more sensible. In my opinion Anthony Thorogood is fast becoming the King of Banter, the pace of the book is fast and this is matched by the pace of the humor. Very funny with a nice tidy story line. And as for the ending, it had me going oooooooh!!!
'... it ended with a twist that took me utterly by surprise.'

A ship heading from Earth to Athena, a planet 500 light years away, is suddenly attacked by the Gerns, an alien empire in its expansion phase. People aboard are divided by the invaders into Acceptables and Rejects. The Acceptables would become slave labor for the Gerns on Athena, and the Rejects are forced ashore on the nearest 'Earth-like' planet, called Ragnarok. The Gerns say they will return for the Rejects, but the Rejects quickly realise that that isn't going to happen. Ragnarok has a gravity 1.5 times that of Earth, and is populated by deadly, aggressive creatures and it contains little in the way of usable metal ores. This, combined with a terrible deadly fever that kills in hours, more than decimates the population.

Detective-Inspector Gabriel Hanaud has been described as the "first major fiction police detective of the Twentieth Century". He was modelled on two real-life heads of the Paris Sûreté, Macé and Goron. Émile Gaboriau's Monsieur Lecoq was also an acknowledged inspiration. Mason wanted to physically differentiate Hanaud from Sherlock Holmes as much as possible, and so he made him stout and broad-shouldered in contrast to Holmes who was thin. He often relies on psychological methods to solve cases and is assisted by his friend, the fastidious Mr Julius Ricardo, a former City of London financier. Do you want to learn more about the Spanish Flu and its consequences? If your answer is yes, then keep reading!
1918 has to be considered a terrible and sad year for our forefathers. Hopeful soldiers were so glad to be returning from WWI. They were coming home to their families and loved ones in the hope of seeing their spouses and children. Instead, they were greeted by one of the worst pandemics ever to hit the modern-day World.
They did not know at the time that they were part of the problem because they did not realize the flu had followed them home. During this time, there was so little known about how the flu was being transferred between humans or some other source because it had not yet been identified.
The one thing that everyone did know was that people were dying at such a rapid rate. It was unbelievable. You might be feeling fine one day, and within 36 hours, you were dead, and whatever it was, it was spreading like wildfire.

If planning on moving into an RV for a life on the road, the urgency to get
rid of that last obstacle may become an obsession. I know because this happened to me.
The thought of selling your home without the assistance of a "Real Estate
Agent" sends most people into panic. All the paperwork seems overwhelming
not to mention trying to direct buyer traffic to your house. If you want
to sell your home fast (and most of us do) the first instinct is to try
to find a good real estate agent. You can interview several agents,
search the Internet for the most compelling ad, or talk to your friends
Or... you can save yourself a lot of money (and headaches) by selling
your house yourself.
First time buyers and sellers don't have a clue how the real estate world
works. Professional real estate agents work hard to keep that ignorance in
place. This is why you rarely get helpful information from any real estate
Until just recently selling your home as a ...
This eBook edition of "A Hero of Romance (Unabridged)" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Excerpt:"It was about as miserable an afternoon as one could wish to see. May is the poet's month, but there was nothing of poetry about it then. True, it was early in the month, but February never boasted weather of more unmitigated misery. At half-past two it was so dark in the schoolroom of Mecklemburg House that one could with difficulty see to read. Outside a cold drizzling rain was falling, a shrieking east wind was rattling the windows in their frames, and a sullen haze was hiding the leaden sky. As unsatisfactory a specimen of the English spring as one could very well desire."
The Rainbow tells the story of three generations of the Brangwen family, a dynasty of farmers and craftsmen who live in the east Midlands of England, on the borders of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The book covers a period from the 1840s to 1905, and shows how the love relationships of the Brangwens change against the backdrop of the increasing industrialization of Britain. The first central character, Tom Brangwen, is a farmer whose experience of the world does not stretch beyond these two counties; while the last, Ursula, his granddaughter, studies at university and becomes a teacher in the progressively urbanized, capitalist and industrial world.
This open access book is the first comparative study of public, voluntary and private asylums in nineteenth-century Ireland. Examining nine institutions, it explores whether concepts of social class and status and the emergence of a strong middle class informed interactions between gender, religion, identity and insanity. It questions whether medical and lay explanations of mental illness and its causes, and patient experiences, were influenced by these concepts. The strong emphasis on land and its interconnectedness with notions of class identity and respectability in Ireland lends a particularly interesting dimension. The book interrogates the popular notion that relatives were routinely locked away to be deprived of land or inheritance, querying how often "land grabbing" Irish families really abused the asylum system for their personal economic gain. The book will be of interest to scholars of nineteenth-century Ireland and the history of psychiatry and medicine in Britain and ...

How much do you remember about your early childhood?
Beth Anne Evans remembers the fish nibbling at her legs in the swimming hole, the brown eyes of the calf at the farm up the road, and the scent of her mother's perfume... But she has other memories too, like the roar of the car engine after bedtime, the heat of the flames when her father's store burned down, and the pallor of her sister's face after the VW bus went off the road...
Set in rural America in the 1970s, this fictionalised memoir beautifully observes and recreates an early childhood lived in the shadow of outsized adulthoods. Sometimes the darkness of Beth Anne's story threatens to overwhelm her -- like that evening when even the fireflies desert her -- but the light always returns, whether as the sun setting over Cape Cod or the Fourth of July fireworks exploding above a Vermont field.
Three Before Nine pulls the reader in with unusually rich dialogue and vivid description. Author Bess Linnet invites the reader to ...
"Beaumarchais and the War of American Independence" in 2 volumes is one of the best-known works by an American historian Elizabeth Sarah Kite. Pierre Beaumarchais (1732-1799) was a French polymath who rose in French society and became influential in the court of Louis XV as an inventor and music teacher. He made a number of important business and social contacts, and played various roles as a diplomat and spy. An early French supporter of American independence, Beaumarchais lobbied the French government on behalf of the American rebels during the American War of Independence. Before France officially entered the war in 1778, Beaumarchais played a major role in delivering French munitions, money and supplies to the American army.

Delicious and Easy Recipes with this Weight Watchers Cookbook
Weight loss, without any doubt, is one of the most excellent motivators for millions of people to follow this diet. Instead of relying on calorie calculations, this program works with their "SmartPoints." Each recipe has been allocated to its respective SmartPoint values. They can be from a range of 0-10 SmartPoints per serving. Those points are the core reference for dieters to watch for.
Unlike other weight-loss diets that make you count calories, SmartPoints have nothing to do with calories; instead, they have been allocated based on your age, sex, weight, height, activity level, metabolism, and other factors. Keeping those parameters in mind, each dieter has been given their specific allowance of SmartPoints to consume per day. Each element carries its SmartPoints; for example, if you are male, then you get 8 SmartPoints. Similarly, if your height is more than 5'1, then you get 1 SmartPoints. The daily allowance is ...
The problem was caused by flames so it seemed logical for it to end in smoke.
Michael Brydges, just wanted to be Chief of Police in Douglas, Ga. He worked hard, neglected his family, and patched empty promises with "unwanted gifts" for it. He didn't want his family to want for anything. All they wanted was him.
After losing his wife and daughter, he allowed the daughter that he was left to raise to get away with whatever she wanted. No matter the cost, crime, or reason. "She's grieving," he explained. Not realizing that each time he "fanned the flames" her behavior would grow worse; causing her to explode with deceit, anger, and violence.
Did he hand over the match that would cause the flame to burn the bridge that should have brought them together? Did he add fuel to the fire that would consume the life of the daughter that was still living?
Or is it all her fault?

The Mayflower was an English ship that famously transported the first English Puritans, known today as the Pilgrims, from Plymouth, England to the New World in 1620. There were 102 passengers, and the crew is estimated to have been about 30, but the exact number is unknown. This voyage has become a cultural icon in the history of the United States, with its story of death and survival in the harsh New England winter environment. The culmination of the voyage was the signing of the Mayflower Compact, an event which established a rudimentary form of democracy, with each member contributing to the welfare of the community.
