This book offers fast-track vocabulary training for the VERBS of Modern Greek. It is primarily aimed at intermediate level learners who wish to refresh and improve rapidly their lexical background in Modern Greek (it is assumed that readers know the three conjugation types of Greek verbs), but beginners could also profit from parts of it.
The verbs are introduced via various example sentences, which address different registers of the Greek language, from the official, formal one, to every-day, informal expressions. Some other linguistic parallels (nouns, adverbs, adjectives) are underlined or highlighted in each pair of bilingual sentences. The alphabetical order of verbs is avoided, to make their introduction more natural. Each pair of examples begins with simpler sentences (for the beginner learners), and has at the end longer/more complicated ones (for intermediate learners). The locutions in which the verbs play a part, indicated after each verb definition, are also intended for the intermediate learners. Beginner learners may just wish to skip reading them in the first instance, if they sound too complicated, and come back to them when re-reading.
The second part of the book offers some of Esop's fables, first in a bilingual, juxta-paragraph version, then followed by translation, and then just in Modern Greek, but annotated with lexical footnotes (for English we have used George Fyler Townsend's translation from 1867, for Modern Greek we have used the anonymous work of contributors to wikisource, wishing to add a Modern counterpart to the original Ancient Greek texts of the fables)
The fables are available from Wikisource, under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License (CC-BY-SA) and the GNU Free Documentation License (https://el.wikisource.org/wiki/???????_?????) and https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Three_Hundred_Aesop%27s_Fables)
We have slightly modified both the English and the Modern Greek versions, in order to make the correspondence ...
