Feynman & Boyd: Volume 1 : Manhattan by J.C.S. Wilson (The Rattling Page) Price verified 4 hours ago

"This was a spectacular first book of the year! An alternate ending to WWII leads to high seas survival, a desert mystery and a quirky scientist's take on the mayhem... " - Goodreads "... a mix of science fiction, second world war history and of course, a post-catastrophe dystopian world. Unique, thought provoking and eminently readable." - Goodreads Sitting alone in his truck, Richard Feynman watches the Trinity Test fail. A year later, months after the celebrations that follow the end of World War Two, Lottie Boyd drifts alone on the Atlantic with a sniper rifle over her lap, one of the few to have escaped the Silent Zones. The fear that a large scale nuclear event would kick off a chain reaction of much more stable elements going into a fisson-state, burning the planet away, was real in the formative years of atomic testing. In Feynman and Boyd, the reverse occurs. The Trinity test fails due to a previously unidentified counter-reaction, where something in the natural world snuffs out combustion. The dusty by-product of this reaction, nicknamed "Deaden," is found to stabilize any combustible form, rendering weapons useless. The Manhattan Project quickly becomes a facility for creating Deaden. It is this anti-weapon that wins World War II. Within weeks of discovering Deaden, and using controlled reactions to manufacture it, it's then discovered that Deaden eventually also stops cellular combustion, killing every surrounding living thing. These areas are the Silent Zones. Despite this, manufacturing keeps being developed, and a massive, singular Silent Zone befalls most of the world, killing most living things in it's grip. Most. Lottie Boyd is in her twenties, a chronically ill woman whose illness has made her immune to the suffocation of Deaden. She has struck out for warmer climate after everyone and everything she has ever known has been killed. She sails on her father's sailboat, the Slocum, a replica of Joshua Slocum's Spray. The novel follows Lottie ...

It's Dark in Wenlock by Bill Stenlake Price verified 4 hours ago

It's Dark in Wenlock. I have been out at night in Wenlock before, of course I have. It is just that I haven't been out that late, walking home in complete darkness. They turn off the street lights overnight. That made the difference, as I walked home last night. I'd got a call for help about 10 o'clock, but by the time everything was sorted it was about 3 o'clock before I was ready to walk home. I walked down the lane by the Pottery and turned onto Sheinton Street. At the Bull Ring I crossed over the road and started walking up past the church. I heard a noise to my left. I can't explain what sort of noise exactly, but it was like a swooshing noise. I stopped and turned. I felt my heartrate go up a few notches. I could just make out the outline of the nearest gravestones. I could also make out the shape of the big tree beyond that. That was about the extent of my view. Then she appeared from the doorway of the church and walked along the path and away from me. She must have been hiding in the doorway as I approached. The whoosh, I took to be her movement. She had a long cloak on, as far as I could make out. Beyond the gravestones, she just blended into the rest of the darkness. I did call out to her, but she didn't slow down and she didn't respond. That was my first encounter with her. Later that morning I saw activity down the town. When I enquired what was going on, I found out that a body had been discovered in a house near to the corner of Sheinton Street. A passer-by had found the front door open and ventured in. What they found was not a pretty sight. I felt I should mention that I had been walking past there in the night. I also feel I should tell about the figure I saw running away from the entrance to the church, less than 50 metres away. I am interviewed by a detective and that is that. But it isn't. About lunchtime I have been in the town again. I am on my way home when a car stops beside me. It is the detective. 'We need to have another talk to ...

The Legacy (Shadow Core - Book 1) by Licinio Goncalves 4.8 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Nearly a century has passed since the last major battle of the Unification War. The ancient skirmish was brief, but devastating. It left behind the shattered fragments of the Solarian Union's Second Fleet, the lifeless hulls of a civilian convoy and countless questions about who or what could have been responsible for such an atrocity. The conflict disrupted the very fabric of space and created the Dead Zone, a hazardous region that may hold the only record of what really happened so long ago. Deep within the Dead Zone, an ancient 'derelict' dreadnaught of unimaginable destructive power drifts silently through the void, hidden away at the heart of the old anomaly. The saga begins as Kade - a smuggler from the fringe colonies - excitedly steps aboard the four-kilometre-long ship from the mythical human faction rumoured to have once stood against the avarice of the Solar System. Bound by an old promise to seek out the fabled vessel, Kade's destiny is forever altered when she meets the sole 'human' crew member that calls the ship home. What secrets does the 'derelict' hold? And why does the Union seek to destroy it?

With a powerful lunge, the beast was on him sending both of them crashing to the ground. Its steamy hot breath bellowed in his face, reeking with the stench of death as they rolled on the ground. Immense pain exploded though his left shoulder when the black devil's fangs tore through his plate armor and bored deeply into his flesh. Michael prayed he could scramble to his feet and unsheathe his sword in time. A sudden downward thrust of his arms was all he needed. He pushed his legs forward and managed to dislodge the black devil long enough to scramble to his feet. He drew his sword, then smiling he welcomed the fight. The 28th Century celebrates seven hundred years of The Crowned Confederacy's rule over mankind and its space colonies. The Silent Assassin reaches its first act's conclusion in Book V: WHEN SEA BURNS. The political intrigues, assassinations, romance, war, and drama of the previous four books triggered an explosive butterfly effect which materialises in this volume of the series. A powerful new faction behind the events unveil themselves, and the main protagonist will be challenged to his limits. Will he survive, or will he finally break? WHEN SEA BURNS Audi Prabian and his three companions: Nagisawa Chizuru, Jane Drake, and Jonathan Mills are mercenaries dragged into the war between The Cypriot Brotherhood and The Crowned Confederacy. With deep animosity from the past still plaguing their relationships, they are forced to work together to escape Planet Gleicherde and avoid certain death at the Brotherhood's hands. But things turn complicated when the Brotherhood admiral in charge of the invasion--Denis Khristoforovich Lavrov-- seeks to duel Audi after he witnessed his skills in battle. The Brotherhood is rapidly advancing in all fronts, and Audi must avoid Denis before all avenues of escape from the planet are denied. However, Denis commits an atrocity in the name of his cause. Despite usually apathetic, Audi becomes enraged by Denis's action and abandons his three companions. He vows to stay in Gleicherde until he could crush Denis for what he's done. WHEN SEA BURNS is a tale of heroic struggle which serves to test the humanity of its characters. The ideals of friendship, love, humanism, and environmentalism will be strained to their limits as Audi and Denis clash over the war-torn planet of Gleicherde.

Dantriné, the capital of the great land of Dorthland, festers. It has been two years since Queen Lana was murdered and the priesthood of the Mokerin have the ear of the widower king. They sow seeds of misery to embolden their dark lord to return, and on Venvedeer's Island something appears on the floor of a cave that was not there before. A tiny drop of oil; no bigger than an insect's eye. Zenzel is returning to earth for the third time since abandoning his human form, and will be more powerful than ever before. The great wizard Ortello knows too well what a mighty foe he faces and is forced to impose great burdens on his fellow wizards to prepare for the coming war. He turns Faylon into a mighty Baygu tree, which will serve as a haven against Zenzel's dark forces. Ronin he tasks with leading the animal kingdom to the refuge of the Baygu, giving him a stunning new visage to do so. Coalbatch is sent on a mission of a more diplomatic nature, to seek the support of the Uderlites, the race beneath the ground. This is just the start of Ortello's work in Dantriné: He must claim his apprentice Poe at the Hand Harvest, as unready as Poe may be, and rescue the prisoner falsely accused of Queen Lana's murder from deep inside the King's dungeons. Fortunately, a diminutive but deadly sellsword much suited to the task is making her way to Dantriné in a wooden box. But first she must fight for her freedom in the King's Tourney. "Escape from Dantriné" is the first novel in a series, with "To the Far Reaches" to follow.

Heartland Junk Part II: Sanctuary: A ZOMBIE Apocalypse Serial by Eli Nixon 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 3 hours ago

It came at you first like an unexpected chill breeze on a warm day. Most people never had a chance to figure out what was happening before it was too late. Only the lucky ones, the ones already ruined, like me, were able to defend ourselves. The terrifying second installment of Heartland Junk, a zombie apocalypse serial novel! -- Instinctively, I crouched into the wheat, letting the thin stalks brush my face. The people on the hill just stood there, unmoving. Staring. Had they seen me? I didn't think they had. In fact, I had a creeping suspicion that they couldn't see anything. This wasn't exactly what I'd expected, but it was close. I lowered myself onto hands and knees and began crawling toward the row of dark shapes. Sunlight struck their left sides at such an extreme angle that the rest of their bodies were obscured in shadow, halfway between silhouette and nightmare. I didn't have a weapon. I could feel my head clearing itself of hydrocodone, feel my limbs getting lighter by the minute. This was foolish. No, it was suicide. I crawled forward. I had to know. For everyone. For Rivet, for Jennie. For me. Damn it, I needed answers. Rivet was always right, in the end. It just took everyone else awhile to come around. I scrambled closer, keeping my head below the ceiling of clear air above the wheat. Stalks bent and snapped beneath my palms, my knees, the rubber toes of my shoes. Every few seconds, I popped my head into the clear to see how close I'd come. And every time, the statuesque bodies loomed nearer, watching, waiting for something. Dark sentinels in the growing twilight. I could see now that they were turned away from me, all of them, facing south over the darkening field. With startling speed, the sun dropped behind the treeline off to the left, sending shadows racing past me to reunite with their dark brethren on the opposite border. Its light still reflected on the high clouds overhead, filling that wide, endless sky with fire even while the ...

First Shard of Light (Shards of Light Book 1) by Kyrja (K3 Press) 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

In order to stop the brutal War of Magics raging within the mortal plain, Ri'Lanna, the Goddess of Light, allied herself with the God of Warfare, to imprison her brother, the God of Thunder, within the celestial plain. Not only did the Goddess betray her brother, but she also tricked the God of Warfare by stealing magic from the rest of the known world. Ri'Lanna then created a place of salvation for a few handfuls of her faithful, within a small nation she has named the Beqa'vah. But in stealing magic from the rest of the known world, Ri'Lanna unknowingly unbalanced the cosmos, creating a thinning in the fabric that is the membrane between the world of the living and the emptiness of the Void, where those who have earned eternal damnation reside. Fortunately for both the humans who occupy the mortal plain and their divine counterparts, Ri'Lanna's half-sister, Zarta, the Goddess of Flame, has foreseen the eventuality of the barrier between the worlds failing and has taken steps to prevent the collapse of the universe by sundering the soul of one of her faithful followers, placing a half of the soul into the bodies of a set of twins separated at birth born within her sister's protected domain. Danas, the boy, grows up to become a devoted disciple in the Attendant Orders of the Goddess of Light, while the girl, Yachana, is deemed "Zarta Touched" at birth, condemning her to a lifetime in the dark of a cave lit by the flame of a single candle. Her simple needs are met by a group of mystics calling themselves the Daughters of the Flame, providing for the girl in the hope she will be the prophesized oracle who will one day release the souls of all of Zarta's servants, both living and dead, during the apocalypse that will save humanity from the destruction their Red Goddess has foreseen.

Left on Paradise by Kirk Adams (Kirk Adams Books) 5.0 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Imagine a land where drugs are legal, reproductive rights are unquestioned, gay marriage is celebrated, nature is unpolluted, socialism is implemented, diversity is unchallenged, and racial harmony perfected. Imagine a land without conservative strictures, Christian moralism, and constitutional antiquarianism. Imagine a progressive utopia in the south Pacific. Better yet, imagine what might happen if progressives and radicals decided to form a new country based exclusively (or must we say inclusively?) on leftist ideals rather than customs and constitutions founded by Puritan fanatics, Yankee traders, and Virginia gentlemen. Imagine what might happen if 102 such idealists moved to a pristine Pacific island and showed the world what it truly means to be... Left on Paradise. The year is 2001 and a new country has been founded among the nations -- a State of Paradise freed from the corruptions and compromises of the Old World. Here Hollywood celebrities Ryan Godson and his wife Kit Fairchild lead a band of hand-chosen compatriots to show what it means to live in a land without private property, a society without firearms, and a culture without moral judgment. On an isolated Pacific island, this intrepid assembly of feminists, pacifists, socialists, libertarians, communists, environmentalists, multiculturalists, and progressives of every hue will establish a secular utopia as the newest state among the nations. Disgusted by the election of George W. Bush and the American population that elected him, the secular pilgrims have emigrated to a New World to build a truly great society in a tropical paradise. Freed from every barrier to leftists ideals, this progressive community is finally free to be itself. Only one question now remains: will the United States Marines arrive in time to save them from each other?

End of a Girl (Folio 55 Book 1) by Nia Sinjorina 4.2 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

"Now I lie in a chamber deep underground, as safe from the monsters and their masters, the creatures and their crimes, as I can be; not knowing whether I'll see the sky, or what remains of it ever again. As I forget everything but the task, as the All fills me, refreshes me, steadies me, and removes me, I drink my fill from the flow of the Web and share the sensations of my companions who have yet to abandon the surface." "Somewhere far above, the universe has gone mad. The beautiful mother that is the moon has started to burn. The forever father that is the sun appears to be dimming, a dark spot growing bigger and blacker against its golden skin. Fiery rocks have begun to fall from the heavens, to punch through the air and pummel the land below, the place where we and what remains of all life does live. It is all I can do, in consumption of these crimes, to keep water from my eyes and despair from my heart." So are written the words of the Narrator, shared and transcribed for the Folion, on the 28th of November, 2020. These sentences form part of the fifty-fifth folio, the work that relates the tale of The Lady, she who has set us free. With humanity's armies destroyed, its nations mere memory, and its people hunted to extinction, our last stand, as mandated by the Epilogue, is made not with force of arms but with a Sharing. On paper and metal, plastic and stone, we throw our survival into the streams of time, so that who we are shall never die! End of a Girl, the first book of Folio 55, is out now. Grab a copy and begin an epic journey in the company of an insignificant teenager inhabiting a remote town on a distant coastline of the United Kingdom. Insecure, angry, and bored, Molly Peterson wishes for a more interesting life. Be careful what you wish for!

Pretty Bird: A Sci-Fi Novella by Eli Nixon 4.5 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

The animals are gone. All of them. Except, of course, for the parrot. The one telling me to kill. Eli Nixon's "Pretty Bird" is a novella of epic proportions, a thrill-a-minute ride through humanity's most bizarre future that will leave you guessing until the last page. With a stellar cast of characters and an unforgettable ending, "Pretty Bird" offers an exciting look into a future where anonymity is the most prized fact of life, where things are not always as they seem, and where a single bird has the power to disrupt the entire cosmos. Sample: The sharpest terror comes from the unknown, but somehow Gammans Park looked even more foreboding now that I knew what was inside and waiting for me. An aluminum can crunched between my tire and the road's asphalt surface as I rolled to a stop along the curb across the street from the park. I cut off the engine. The lumpy half-parrot reached over with a thick, sausage-like wing and hooked a nub around the door handle, pulling it open. I prayed for a truck to come screaming out of nowhere and tear the door off its rusty hinges, crushing the parrot beyond repair, beyond Lazarus's power to heal, but the door simply creaked open and the parrot hopped out, then pushed it closed behind him. I lit a cigarette and followed suit. The park entrance yawned before us in full tangled glory, beckoning us into its maw. I don't know why I'd chosen this place other than that it seemed somehow fitting. Kill the messenger, kill the harbinger. Don't litter. I was halfway across the street before I remembered. The parrot-thing waited patiently for me as I ran back to the car and leaned into the back seat, then trotted back to catch up. There was a muted agony in its eyes, the only expression I'd ever seen it give. I didn't feel sorry for it. How could I? Although Gammans Park covered less than an acre, the overgrown path we chose seemed to wind through the briars and trash heaps for miles. More than once I wondered if we were going in ...

The Daragh Deception (Conclave Worlds Book 1) by Kenley Davidson (Page Nine Press) 4.4 Stars (32 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

He's the one man who could ruin everything. And he may be the only one who can keep her safe. When Emma Forester left Earth behind, all she wanted was to do her job and be left alone. After months on the run, a corporate colony world on the outskirts of explored space seemed like the perfect place to hide from her terrifying past. But before she can settle into her new life on Daragh, she attracts the attention and the suspicions of brusque, handsome corporate soldier Devan Rybeck. Devan is convinced Emma is hiding something, but finds himself increasingly driven to protect the fragile-looking newcomer from the harsh realities of a colony world. Her distracting presence complicates his mission and his feelings, until a vicious attack reveals that neither Emma nor Daragh are all they pretend to be. Emma's subsequent flight into the dangerous and unpredictable wilds of Daragh proves just how much steel she's hiding beneath her quiet exterior, and just how far she's willing to go to protect her secrets. But Daragh has secrets of its own, and Devan must race against time to bring Emma home before her staggering discoveries trigger a Conclave war. If he fails, there will be no escape from the coming darkness -- either for himself or the woman he would die to protect.
