Pierre François : 5th Grade Mishaps by Lori Ann Stephens 4.2 Stars (27 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Ten-year-old Pierre François--otherwise known as Pierre the Fantastic Flying Fish and Pierre the Genius Brain--is an expert at signing his school papers with original names. He's also good at extolling the greatness of France, using weird words like "extolling," dissecting owl vomit, and avoiding The Stinky Chair in math class. What he's not good at is a foolproof bladder. Accidents happen, although this is Top Secret information. So when it's time for the entire fifth grade to go to Adventure Camp, a two-night trip in the wilderness, Pierre would rather complain about the fifth grade meanies, dream of mastering the spelling bee with Jedi skills, and devise ways to meet the fascinating new girl in school. But Adventure Camp is coming for him, along with a wet and icy cold front. Can Pierre muster all his courage and wit to survive nature's onslaught of ice, rain, and other liquid fiascos?

Dealer No. 1 by James Ross Price verified 5 hours ago

Billy Elliott meets Breaking Bad! Mickey Hall is a bright, friendly fifteen year-old from a chaotic family background - a feckless single-parent mother, a drug-addicted sister and a series of waster 'dads' - who realises that his life would become so much easier if he simply embraced a life of crime himself. Having decided on this course of action he assembles a group of like-minded schoolfriends, and adopts a huge fighting dog called Maximus and, being both charming and very ruthless he sets out to become the number one drug dealer in town. He also begins a relationship with the prettiest, coolest girl in school. Things are going well until one afternoon he is abducted by a car full of adult gangsters who take him to a disused warehouse where he thinks they are going to murder him but instead he is introduced to the leader of the gang - his own father, a powerful, influential and affluent figure in the criminal underworld. He is quickly seduced deep into a life of crime by his new-found father's wealth and power. Eventually though, Mickey finds himself in a situation where he must choose between saving his family and betraying his father, forced to choose between old loyalties and his new found wealth and security. Set in the grimy, poverty-stricken, north-eastern wasteland of Sunderland, a place of derelict industry, charity shops, and people riding 'benefit chariots' - a town that is ironically currently bidding for the title European City of Culture - comes this YA novel of drugs, dreams and dead-end families.

Miss Marple Struts Her Stuff (A Jack Hamma Action Adventure Book 4) by Anthony E Thorogood (Burgoyne Publishing) 4.1 Stars (9 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

A relentless and humorous thriller where every move is a false start and every clue a red herring. Jack faces the Hong Kong mafia and is mixed up in a deadly turf war. The knives and cleavers are out. Engaged to protect a beautiful Chinese girl, the daughter of a Triad Dragon Master, Jack fouls up big time when she is abducted from under his nose. A page turner you can't put down. Reviews: The latest instalment of Jack Hamma and his detective agency is currently my favourite. Whilst reading this I had a thought, the style of writing is similar to Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently, but slightly more sensible. In my opinion Anthony Thorogood is fast becoming the King of Banter, the pace of the book is fast and this is matched by the pace of the humor. Very funny with a nice tidy story line. And as for the ending, it had me going oooooooh!!! '... it ended with a twist that took me utterly by surprise.'

Saardu: The Adventure Begins (The Saardu Series Book 1) by Carma Chan 2.5 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

It's time for a whole new myth! Saardu: The Adventure Begins is the first book in a series of novels unravelling the mysteries of String Theory for kids. The first book aims at enticing young readers who are beginning to read chapter books on their own. However, adults have read and enjoyed this story, too. Ruby feels trapped in a boring, rigid environment where genetic engineers have done away with Art, eradicated imagination and put people down for daydreaming. She is at risk of being found out as an incurable daydreamer, and narrowly avoids disaster, though her parents pay the price for her mistake. This edition adds bonus material at the end of the story and an introduction to prepare readers for a unique experience. Inventing a new myth for young children is no small feat. It demands tenacity in the reader and inventor alike. New cultures must be laid bare. Unique laws of physics apply. The stage must be set for extraordinary characters to move through dread, terror, and laughter. My aim in writing this novella was to give kids an appetite for String Theory, for possibilities of higher and lower dimensions interacting, and a thorough enjoyment of the gift of being human. The story begins with an unlikely hero thrown into an outrageous quest on the worst day of her life. Before we can understand Ruby's morbid predicament, we must have context, which, in this myth, requires a basic grasp of the dimensions of time, language and imagination; the pros and cons of genetic engineering; and how her community 7,000 light years from Earth and 32 generations from now, is all about us, here and now. The summit of my new myth is Zenya, the 11th dimension, a perfectly otherworldly, creative plane. This first adventure connects the dots, in a way that children can follow, to who we are, how and why we are here, what happens when we die, and really what's going on in our universe! It is such an enormous puzzle, it took decades to craft the first installment. It has ...

He learns too late that the killer had a special fondness for little girls that invades Kalis' dreams and his every waking moment. If Sasti can't finish his new eyes for Kalis, he will have to choose between the eyes of a killer and blindness. That is, if he can fight back the urges long enough to coach her through the process. Kalis is the first in a series of novellas that takes us through a world where the proper preservation of someone's eyes gives practitioner the knowledge and skills of their former owner. Unfortunately, that's not all they inherit.

From Cellar to Throne: Zen's Quest for Immortality 17: The Purgatory Fire Snake (Tempered into a Martial Master: A Cultivation Series) by Mobo Reader 4.2 Stars (14 Reviews)    Price verified 19 hours ago

All the martial artists wanted was to earn a spot in history. Some blended in the crowd, and some didn't. Some worked their way to the top and some became nothing but heaps of dust on the ground. Some were born into riches and jewels, and some were born with nothing but a strong mind and a great talent, like Zen Luo. However, when he saw just how unfair the world was, he couldn't stay put and set out on a journey towards greatness, with only two goals in mind: To witness the world from the very peak of martial arts and to provide a safe and happy future to the people he cared about. Falling from nobility, Zen Luo became a humble slave and served as a human punchbag for his former cousins. Inadvertently, he found a way to refine himself into a weapon and a legend started because of that. With a strong belief in never surrender, he strove for revenges and pursued big dreams. Warriors from various clans contended for hegemony and the world was stirred. Relying on the body that was comparable to a powerful weapon, Zen beat his numerous enemies on his way to the immortality. Would he succeed eventually?

Mermaids are great swimmer and beautiful. Do they have dolphin pets? That would be fun. Wait -- do mermaids wear clothes? Miri's parents didn't mean to keep it a secret. It's just that when she started talking, she was as chittery as a dolphin. So they put off telling her. Oh, she knows she was adopted, likes her food extra salty, and can hold her breath an unbelievably long time. But she never would have dreamed it meant she was a mermaid. Besides, she doesn't have one of those slimy fish tails. She isn't a very good swimmer and doesn't even like to swim in the deep end of the pool, much less in the ocean. Now she's supposed to LIVE at the bottom of it? That's too much. Then again, maybe it won't be all bad. There is the princess part, with the jewels and tiaras. And mermaids are pretty. They get to sit around all day brushing their hair and singing and --- Wait! Do mermaids wear clothes? Miri Attwater and the Ocean's Secret is a middle grade, fun light-hearted girl adventure, approximately middle-grade formatted 175 printed pages long, for readers ages 7 and up.

Of Afflictions, Fourteen: A Tapestry of Twisted Threads in Folio by Stephen Donald Huff (Capital Ideations LLC) Price verified 20 hours ago

While we collectively fear wild animals and muggers, most contemporary plagues come in the guise of unavoidable corporate logos and unforgettable commercial jingles. This new and most modern form of disease presents symptoms that include unhealthy obsessions, unwise compulsions and preprogrammed responses, all accompanied by an irrepressible tune that inevitably drives a rational mind to the very brink of lunacy. Visualize anything except the latest fad slogan while engrossing yourself in a moment of hysteric interest, and then pause to think. Of dreamscape dominions wrought from the felt fabric of primitive emotion; of futuristic shamans enacting fabulous rites in technology; of a mother's ruined soul, savaged by violence and then transcendent in death for her child's love; of quirky neighbors, outrageous demands, abominable illness, and all the countless human infirmities that rot civilization from within; such twisted threads weave life's strange tapestry. Of fascinating grotesqueries, here study endless cases, and of afflictions, fourteen.

Saskia's Skeleton by Lily Markova (Lo-Fi Books) 4.4 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 20 hours ago

Saskia, a one-eyed 10-year-old girl, meets a skeleton in the Spooky Woods and, delighted with his tailcoat and the bird nesting in his ribcage, befriends him; together, they go on to have many horrible adventures and find themselves in a lot of wonderful trouble. Saskia lives in a castle with her Princess and Franz (a nice-cat-turned-nasty-human), attends Bastilly's School for the Ungifted, Average, and Unchosen, and dreams of becoming a circus acrobat. Apart from her being frequently bullied by her proper classmates, Saskia's life is charmed -- that is, until she invites a skeleton over for dinner. Before she knows it, proper grown-ups kidnap Saskia and take her to the Prison for Children Who Did Something Wrong. There, Madam Horridan, who Saskia suspects might be a wicked hag, tries to convince the girl that her castle is a decrepit eyesore, her Princess is sick and needs to take metal pills, and her friends Franz and Skeleton aren't real. Saskia, Skeleton, and Charlie (another prisoner, who can run faster than anyone else despite having a wooden leg) must use their talents to escape from the Prison and rescue the Princess before she receives the Extra Painful, Ultra Dangerous, and Occasionally Effective Lightning Treatment. The Princess's well-being is not the only thing at stake: Madam Horridan is determined to turn Saskia into a proper child and separate her and the Skeleton forever.
