*Wild West Tale One
In the spring of 1859 in Brooklyn, New York, gentleman geologist Ben Jones proposed, "Maggie Mecinski, I want you to be my bride. But first, I must seek my fortune in the hills near Santa Barbara, California. Only after I come back as a success... will I be able to marry you."
Maggie boldly answered as an act of sheer willpower, "I will marry you, Ben."
From that moment on, Maggie made a few life changing plans of her own. She knew that Ben would travel cross-country on horseback. Meanwhile, she would secretly book passage on a ship. The dangerous route would take her through the newly discovered Northwest Passage from the Atlantic through the Arctic to the Pacific Ocean.
In Santa Barbara, California. greenhorn prospector Ben Jones discovered a mountain of gold. Now, he needed a bad reputation to scare off the murderous mountain men of the Wild West. So, he invented the Legend of the Gold Undertaker. Every few weeks, Ben buried a new hand carved casket in the Mission's cemetery and claimed that the bodies were his unlucky partners. Of course he paid the old caretaker with gold nuggets instead of cash.
Without his knowing, Maggie spied on Ben. She feared that her beloved fiancé had been corrupted by greed. Was Ben killing off his partners in order to keep all the gold for himself? Would Ben kill her after they were made partners for life?
Early 1850... Oregon Territory... The Cayuse Indian War. A young mélange woman, raised as white by her British father, finds herself on the wrong side of the new American border. The men she expected to marry, the king's men of the Hudson Bay Company, are leaving. And, instead, the Americans are coming. She must accept a life of servitude to either an Indian male without love and with a slave value of only six dollars or else become a Whiteman's woman - Americans known as "squaw men" who could legally abandon her, abuse her, and even kill her as easily as one might a cow or a horse. Ultimately she will have to sell herself to one or the other. The only question is, to who?
And meet Captain Thomas Bodeen, a ne'er do well soldier of fortune who daringly runs the blockades of both the warring Indians and the US revenue cutters to make his fortune off the war while trying to escape his own dark past of a murdered girl. They will meet in a collision of opposite wills; sarcasm, spite, pride, prejudice, and hate in a conflict ruled by only one commodity - Gold.
