Chasing the Prophet: A Global Apocalypse Can Only be Prevented by the Courage of One Teen and His Loyal Dog by Orson B. Wolf 4.5 Stars (53 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

What would you do if in order to save all humanity, only one man had to be sacrificed... and that one person were you? As the fear of nuclear attack becomes more real than ever, the key to saving everyone's lives lies in the courageous relationship between a shy teenager and his loyal dog. Our planet is on the verge of World War III and a cloud of paralyzing fear is drifting in the air. While the leaders of the free world try to find a solution to the continuing crisis, the voice of The Prophet -- a mysterious figure that has gathered momentum in the last few years -- becomes increasingly louder. The lives of thousands have already been saved thanks to his appearances in the media during which he issues timely warnings against natural disasters and dangerous events. Within an already unstable security situation growing worse due to a deepening recession, an unemployed detective named Paul McBride is invited for a job interview. Paul suspects someone senior is behind this offer, perhaps even the prophet himself. The task given to Paul seems too easy: to follow a shy, introverted high school student named David who is always escorted by Max, his dog. Soon the investigator finds out the young man is hiding a dark secret of far reaching consequences. When David's secret is discovered by evildoers, he finds himself with his back against the wall, forced to demonstrate incredible courage in order to save himself, his loved ones, and the entire human race. But... will that suffice?

Gentle Beast (The Noor Chronicles Book 1) by Margaret Afseth 4.8 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

They steal people; farm them in the bowels of the earth like cattle, leaving little hope for humanity to survive. Against the odds, Althea fights to stay alive, and in the process, finds an undesirable named Loki to help her before it's too late. (BOOK 1) SYNOPSIS _____________ Picture human life with no more value than domestic cattle. Then imagine finding your life partner in that setting. This story has two main characters. The first is Loki, a non-human healer. He's made the mistake of his life, and now must pay, unjustly sentenced to prison for protecting the honor of his sister. Out in the universe where Loki comes from, he is viewed as an undesirable. He belongs to a misunderstood species, an outcast forbidden to take a mate. Also, a one-of-a-kind being, he is so rare he is feared by most, and revered by others. When Loki joins prison life, he expects it to be cruel, his freedom curtailed, but he is totally unprepared for the sideline enterprise the warden inside has established. Our second character is Althea. She is an average human woman struggling to make ends meet in today's society, living alone, neglected by family, who consider their own problems more important than maintaining relationships. When Althea makes a mistake that has unexpected results, she is thrown into Loki's ugly new prison world. As her children follow suit with bad judgment of their own, the results impact all in most unusual ways. Reader be forewarned: this is not a story for the faint of heart. It was written to mirror attitudes you may not enjoy. It is in memory of the countless little lives lost each year in our world.

The Adored by Tom Connolly 4.1 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

On the day before Winston Trout's wedding, his best men, 6 childhood friends from pre-school, will have difficulty getting to the church on time. One is in jail, arrested for murder. Two others have been hauled in by investigators from the SEC on charges of insider trading. A fourth is in Puerto Rico with a new love before he must return to duty as a Navy Seal in Afghanistan. The fifth, a gay man, is being tempted to switch sides. The sixth is trying to keep his promise to Winston to have all these men at the church on time. The Adored is a story rich in character, in the style of Tolstoy. It follows the lives of seven boys who bond in pre-school and who come of age in New York. It weaves a tapestry of interconnected lives on the global stage of privilege and power. Edward Wheelwright, a son of that privilege, is now a striver attempting to regain his family's fortune lost in the great recession. The love of his life, Val McGuire, is attempting to regain Eddie, lost to the lustrous Santa Alba. Eddie, Val and their closest friends are fully engaged in life - they work at the top of their father's businesses, they fall in love, they cheat on each other, and they trade on insider information. Yet, there is a goodness in each of the characters who work at redeeming themselves - some succeed. A problem lingers: one of them committed a murder as a teenager and an innocent young black man is serving time for it. Along the way these seven men from the 1% have starkly different lives but remain connected by an umbilical cord stretching back to the privileged life that began in preschool. Vito Boriello, an industrious sleuth with the Stamford Police Department, attempts to sort the good guys from the bad. There is no assurance he will be successful.

Home for Christmas by Stephanie Wilson (Highland Park Publishers) 4.3 Stars (59 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

The moon glimmered brightly that Seattle October night. Magical; cold, crisp and clear -- as it almost never was. Streams of miniscule princesses, pirates and even oversized vampires trekked to Savannah Wentworth's historic estate. She would log 2,100 pieces of candy before closing the door for the last time. It was sold, the ancestral home; papers would be signed the following day. She didn't have to pass out candy, or face curious neighbors... or make dozens of candied apples or litter the front porch with pumpkins and hay bales. But she did. Family traditions ran deep. While that bittersweet night was an ending... a new beginning arrives with a broom, a couple of black bags, and two helping hands. Somewhat annoyed, she unknowingly meets Austin Douglass, self-made tech mogul, and the estate's new owner. Savannah is a member of Seattle's old-money elite with an impeccable pedigree and business prowess... until, of course, it was swept away in the economic downturn. To settle debt, she sold everything, including the ancestral home. And Christmas is just around the corner. Austin Douglass grew up on an Eastern Washington wheat farm. He knew two things and promised one; the hum of the combine and a sun-scorched day's labor, and that he wouldn't stay there. Now, in IPO preparations, he needs deep-pocket investors. Life has little prepared him for entertaining Seattle elite. Through a colleague, he meets someone who is. Savannah is a traditionalist, Austin, a minimalist. They are polar opposites. She is losing her family estate, he is gaining one. As the holidays brighten the city and snow falls ever so magically, as time-honored Christmas traditions are celebrated, can these two breach their differences? Journey with them and discover if there is a path leading... Home for Christmas.

The Life of a Cowboy: Complete 5 Book Collection: True Life Tales of Texas Cowboys and Adventure Novels by Andy Adams (Musaicum Books) Price verified 8 hours ago

"The Log of a Cowboy" is an account of a five-month drive of 3,000 cattle from Brownsville, Texas, to Montana during 1882 along the Great Western Cattle Trail. Although the book is fiction, it is based on Adams's own experiences, and it is considered by many to be literature's best account of cowboy life. Adams was disgusted by the unrealistic cowboy fiction being published in his time; The Log of a Cowboy was his response. The Chicago Herald has said: "As a narrative of cowboy life, Andy Adams' book is clearly the real thing. It carries its own certificate of authentic first-hand experience on every page." This edition also includes Adams other famous western novels like The Outlet, A Texas Matchmaker, Reed Anthony, Cowman and The Wells Brothers. Andy Adams (1859-1935) was an American writer of western fiction and was born in Indiana. Since childhood Andy used to help his parents with the cattle and horses on the family farm. Due to this Andy's works have been lauded widely for his first hand and authentic portrayal of the life of a cowboy unlike his contemporaries like Owen Wister who romanticized it.

As a single 21-year-old,Bess Parker ventured forth alone, which was virtually unheard of in 1908, into far southwestern North Dakota to establish a homestead, where she became a successful rancher. Her journey demonstrated her strength and steely will as it was filled with challenges and heartache. After kicking her drunk and abusive husband to the curb in 1916, Bess found herself raising four small children alone in a sod house on the pioneer prairie. Bess II: Into the Wind continues Bess' story through the First World War, the Spanish Flu epidemic and into the 1920s as she works to keep her children and her ranch thriving in dangerous times. She meets Anna ,a schoolteacher who is also lesbian, and given the religious and intolerant nature of the community, Bess and Anna must manage their relationship secretly and discreetly while raising the children--or face the consequences of their forbidden love. BessII is the second in a series of four historical novels by Charles Cranston Jett based on this amazing real-life character.

Into the Americas (A novel based on a true story) by Lance Morcan (Sterling Gate Books) 4.3 Stars (242 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

INTO THE AMERICAS (A novel based on a true story) is a gritty, real-life adventure based on one of history's greatest survival stories. It was inspired by the diary entries of young English blacksmith John Jewitt during his time aboard the brigantine The Boston and also during his sojourn at Nootka Sound, on North America's western seaboard, from 1802 to 1805. Written by father-and-son writing team Lance & James Morcan (authors of The World Duology and The Orphan Trilogy), INTO THE AMERICAS is a tale of two vastly different cultures - Indigenous North American and European civilization - colliding head on. It is also a Romeo and Juliet story set in the wilderness. Nineteen year-old blacksmith John Jewitt is one of only two survivors after his crewmates clash with the fierce Mowachaht tribe in the Pacific Northwest. A life of slavery awaits John and his fellow survivor, a belligerent American sailmaker, in a village ruled by the iron fist of Maquina, the all-powerful chief. Desperate to taste freedom again, they make several doomed escape attempts over mountains and sea. Only their value to the tribe and John's relationship with Maquina prevents their captors from killing them. As the seasons pass, John 'goes Indian' after falling in love with Eu-stochee, a beautiful maiden. This further alienates him from his fellow captive whose defiance leads to violent consequences. In the bloodshed that follows, John discovers another side to himself - a side he never knew existed and a side he detests. His desire to be reunited with the family and friends he left behind returns even stronger than before. The stakes rise when John learns Eu-stochee is pregnant. When a final opportunity to escape arises, he must choose between returning to civilization or staying with Eu-stochee and their newborn son. INTO THE AMERICAS has been adapted to a feature film screenplay and is in early development with Morcan Motion Pictures.

Can Pat Riordan put aside his own sense of loss to inspire his students to rise above theirs? Together with other school staff, Riordan works to bring structure and inspire hope, unraveling the troubles and trauma behind disruptive behaviors and learning delays. A well-written book with all of the depth and sincerity needed to create a sense of cohesion and empathy between the narrative and the characters. A tough look at some harsh realities of the teaching profession, coming at a time when we need an infinite amount of respect and support for our teachers--this book sheds light and reality on that and furthers the discussion of how truly important teachers are to our society and culture at large and how much more support they deserve from us. I enjoyed how the author, J. Michael McGee, introduced his characters and wove in details and care throughout. McGee clearly has experience and passion for the work and that shows through in his writing creating a bridge of connection between author and readers. This book is a relatable one and the kind of triumphant story of the spirit that will never get old. As a teacher in mainstream education who has worked with a large number of disadvantaged and challenging children I was really drawn to this book. Salammbô by Gustave Flaubert (E-BOOKARAMA) 3.9 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

"Salammbô" is an historical novel by Gustave Flaubert, published in 1862. Although the titular heroine is a fictional character, the novel's setting of ancient Carthage and many characters are historically accurate, if highly romanticized. The novel is set in ancient Carthage just after the end of the first Punic War. Carthage has been defeated by the Romans and is nearly bankrupt. Being broke is always a problem, but it is made worse in Carthage's case because they owe a huge amount in back pay to the mercenaries that they had been using to fight Rome. These battle hardened troops were camped outside the city... "Salammbô" is the story of the siege of Carthage in 240-237 BCE by mercenaries who had not been paid for their help in fighting the Romans. It is also the story of the love of Mathô, one of the mercenaries, for Salammbô, the daughter of Hamilcar, chief magistrate of Carthage.

. . . And The Rains Came by Travis Gregory 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

"... And the Rains Came", is a novel that plays upon the emotions, hopes, needs and biases of both men and women in regards to life, love, and relationships. It is a modern romance universal in its appeal; it is the story of two people who find love, lose it, and then learn how to love all over again. Soulmates: fact or fiction? One need not believe in this concept to realize the romanticism and idealism inherent in it. One need not ever experience this concept in actuality to realize the hope and yearning it engenders. For Laura and David this concept is both fantasy and fact. We follow these two characters through a lifetime filled with both incredible love and torturous betrayal. We witness David and Laura's first meeting, and the birth of their daughter. We are also witness to the event that almost destroys their union. The ideal of "soulmate" gets bent, twisted, and then shattered as the inevitable pitfalls of living and loving intrude upon the fantasy of what should be. It then redefines itself as rebirth as they decide to love each other despite this, an enduring love that not even death can destroy. "... And the Rains Came" is a greatly descriptive and empathetic novel written in a way that promotes a deep and sincere connection between the reader and the characters. It creates an empathy that allows the reader to experience in real time the emotions, both positive and heart-wrenching, that the characters are experiencing. Vivid imagery both physically descriptive and emotional lends itself to a dynamic piece of fiction that one will want to read repeatedly and often.

Wonder by Clark Wilkins Price verified 2 hours ago

Tom Bodeen has taken the dangerous job of flying freight to a civil war torn planet on behalf of wealthy bachelor Charles Winston. Winston is already the object of Elizabeth Moure and her four unmarried sisters until they are distracted by the strikingly handsome, charming, and yet totally mercenary Bodeen. When the charismatic Bodeen takes no interest in the prideful Elizabeth, she accuses him of prejudice against her and openly despises him for it. Yet the capture of her sisters by a wild native attack soon forces her to swallow her pride and beg him to rescue them, a request she believes the renowned Bodeen certainly capable of but which he has no intention of granting. Indeed! He's bent on leaving and with good reason. He's about to be sentenced to a firing squad by a militia captain and only Elizabeth can prevent it. The solution? She'll save him from the captain if he'll save her sisters. The captain's price to drop his charges? Elizabeth has to marry him. The problem? She hates him worse than Bodeen, the natives outnumber Bodeen a thousand to one, his weapons nearly useless, he doesn't know where the girls are, he'll die by horrific torture if caught, and he doesn't do this kind of work for free. Even if he is successful, Elizabeth will be condemned to a life of misery with the conniving captain. A happy ending would be a wonder or do wonders never cease?

INGRID ON PARADISO: THE RESCUE OF THE GREEN GIRLS: A KATI OF TERRA ADVENTURE by Helena Puumala (Dodecahedron Books) Price verified 2 hours ago

After Kati of Terra and her companions leave Kati's friend and fellow abductee, Ingrid, on the planet Paradiso to search for the home of the Green Girls that she has returned from slavery on the planet Vultaire, Ingrid's life gets complicated. As if life wasn't confused enough, for a beautiful young woman who has been mistaken for a Spring Goddess, and who has the peculiar ability to keep these highly valued Green Girls alive while away from their home world, when nobody else can. First of all, nobody seems to know where on Paradiso the Green Girls lived before being snatched away by the Slaver Gorsh. As the answer to that question is revealed, it also becomes clear that corruption and criminality must have entered the picture - certainly within the Star Federation bureaucracy, and possibly among the people of the Green Girls, themselves. Ingrid must unravel these mysteries. Her efforts to do so eventually involve many colleagues, both local and from the Star Federation, including the Paradiso K-man with whom she falls in love, during their search for the truth about the Green Girls. The mission first takes her to the unexplored southern hemisphere of Paradiso, and then, ultimately, to another far-flung planet, in her quest to keep the girls (and herself) safe from the slavers who would use and abuse them. She becomes bait in a perilous trap, and must rely on her own wits and survival skills, along with crucial help from an extraordinary wise woman, before a dangerous and unusual rescue mission can be attempted by her lover Tomas, along with Kati of Terra, and others devoted to their cause. The novel is about 200,000 words, providing an excellent value. It takes place within the general story arc of the Kati of Terra series, but it is not necessary to have read the Kati books to enjoy this adventure/romance, as any necessary background is recounted within the book.

He served fifteen years in the Coast Guard, most recently as captain of the Deployable Operations Group, (DOG), the Coast Guard's version of the Army's Special Forces and Navy's Seals operations. When the command was decommissioned, rather than accept re-assignment, Bannon retired from the full-time Coast Guard. But when his country needs him, Bannon once again answers the call. Recruited by the Secretary of Homeland Security, he leads a small, secretive team of specially-trained, highly-skilled operatives capable of responding to and investigating specific, targeted threats against the homeland. Devils Island by Ron Hall 3.7 Stars (44 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Jacob frantically stumbled over the fallen log, crashing uncontrollably through the dense underbrush and falling to the ground. He scrambled quickly back up to his feet and began running again. Jacob had no idea where he was going, but he knew that he should run. He crashed through some more undergrowth and into a little less dense part of the forest. He spun, looking around. His heart felt as if it were trying to jump out of his chest. His mind was racing. Where had Rick gone? Was the thing following him? Was it following Rick? The two friends had just split up, hoping that at least one of them could get away. He turned and ran again, as he ran; he tried looking over his shoulder to see if that thing was after him. He saw no sign of it. Running through this jungle was tough and he kept stumbling and falling. He looked back again; nothing. He turned his head back just in time to dodge around a large tree, as he jumped to his left, he was knocked off balance with a vicious blow. He felt like he had been run over by a truck or a middle linebacker. He hit the ground hard and bounced once. He tried to regain his balance and scramble back to his feet but just as he began to rise he was knocked backward again by the heavy blow of a large hairy paw. Jacob did not even realize that blood was seeping out of his body in several places. The claws had opened his face and falling through the brush had opened several small wounds on his arms and legs. He tried to rise up to his feet again; his entire body was protesting the movement. He felt as if he were moving in slow motion. A cold blackness was beginning to overcome him as he saw the big paw with the razor sharp claws swinging down toward his face. The blackness now enveloped him, his last thought was: I hope Rick makes it out.
