You Should Never Speak Truth To Power... The Galactic Empire is dying and chaos and anarchy are breaking out everywhere. As a result, Captain Stalker and his men are unceremoniously exiled to Avalon, a world right on the Rim of the Empire. It should have been an easy posting... Well, apart from the bandits infesting the countryside, an insurgency that threatens to topple the Empire's loose control over Avalon, and a corrupt civil government more interested in what it can extort from the population than fighting a war. The Marines rapidly find themselves caught up in a whirlwind of political and economic chaos, fighting to preserve Avalon before the competing factions tear the world apart. They're Marines; if anyone can do it, they can. The battle to save the Empire starts here.

The Story of the Goths by Henry Bradley (Blackmore Dennett) 4.0 Stars (143 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

More than three hundred years before the birth of Christ, a traveller from the Greek colony of Marseilles, named Pytheas, made known to the civilized world the existence of a people called Guttones, who lived near the Frische Haff, in the country since known as East Prussia, and traded in the amber that was gathered on the Baltic shores. For four whole centuries these amber merchants of the Baltic are heard of no more. The elder Pliny, a Roman writer who died in the year 79 after Christ, tells us that in his time they were still dwelling in the same neighbourhood; and a generation later, Tacitus, the greatest of Roman historians, twice mentions their name, though he spells it rather differently as Gotones. In his little book on Germany, he says -- in that brief pointed style of his which it is so difficult to translate into English -- "Beyond the Lygians live the Gotones among whom the power of the kings has already become greater than among the other Germans, though it is not yet too great for them to be a free people." And in his Annals he mentions that they gave shelter to a prince belonging to another German nation, who had been driven from his own country by the oppression of a foreign conqueror. These two brief notices are all that Tacitus, who has told us so much that is interesting about the peoples of ancient Germany, has to say of the Gotones. But if he could only have guessed what was the destiny in store for this obscure and distant tribe, we may be sure that they would have received a far larger share of his attention. For these Gotones were the same people who afterwards became so famous under the name of Goths, who, a few centuries later, crowned their kings in Rome itself, and imposed their laws on the whole of Southern Europe from the Adriatic to the Western sea...

FREE MEN and DREAMERS Vol 4: Oh, Say Can You See? by L. C. Lewis (L.C. Lewis) 4.9 Stars (17 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Though the capital smolders, the battered Constitution and the presidency have survived. But the British left the struggling government no home. Gone are the symbols of America -- the Capitol Building and the President's House, and nearly every relic of the infant nation. Britain's next target is the port city of Baltimore, but has the raid on Washington stiffened the Americans' backs? As the Willows women mourn their absent men -- gone to war, or wounded, or captured -- they await the birth of a blessed child. Miles away, attorney Francis Scott Key embarks on a diplomatic mission that will leave an everlasting mark on America. Proving that the pen can indeed be more powerful than the sword, Key records the fears and hopes of his embattled people. His epic poem, soon set to music and titled "The Star-Spangled Banner," rallies a shattered nation to rise from its knees to claim the dream of "one nation under God" during the closing hours of the War of 1812.

The Crystal Chalice (The Legend of Erren-dar Book 1) by R.J. Grieve 4.6 Stars (59 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

The Kingdom of Eskendria is facing the greatest threat to its existence since the fall of the legendary Old Kingdom. The cruel servants of the Destroyer, the ancient enemy of the kingdom, are creeping into the forests of the Forsaken lands ever closer to the mighty river that forms the boundary of Eskendria. Their goal: to annihilate it completely. Eskendria's allies have deserted it and its mountain passes are terrorised by a nest of brigands led by their enigmatic leader, Celedorn - the greatest swordsman in the kingdom and a man with such a savage reputation that even the minions of the enemy are afraid of him. As a final resort, Relisar, the last of the Sages, attempts to summon the champion predicted in an ancient prophesy to save the Kingdom in its darkest hour. But alas, age has diminished Relisar's powers and all he manages to summon is one ragged girl who can remember nothing about herself, not even her name. The king, desperate to avoid a battle on two fronts, sends his eldest son, Andarion, to deal with the threat from the mountains, but he is facing no ordinary adversary in Celedorn and his plans go badly awry. The confrontation in the mountains sets in train a series of unexpected events that lead to Relisar, Andarion, Celedorn and the girl with no name finding themselves on a perilous journey across the Forsaken Lands in a race against time both to save themselves and Eskendria. Yet no human being has crossed these lands in a thousand years and all that is known about them is merely legend. Are the rumours true that fragments of the Old Kingdom live on, hidden from the Destroyer? Are the stories about ancient and evil spirits haunting the forests only myth? As for the companions, who is the girl with no name? And most of all, what is the dreadful secret that Celedorn is hiding that could affect the fate of the Kingdom?

In Search of Lost Time [volumes 1 to 7] by Marcel Proust (knowledge house) 4.3 Stars (192 Reviews)    Price verified 31 minutes ago

"'In Search of Lost Time' is widely recognized as the major novel of the twentieth century." -- Harold Bloom "At once the last great classic of French epic prose tradition and the towering precursor of the 'nouveau roman'." -- Bengt Holmqvist "Proust so titillates my own desire for expression that I can hardly set out the sentence. Oh if I could write like that!" -- Virginia Woolf "The greatest fiction to date." -- W. Somerset Maugham "Proust is the greatest novelist of the 20th century." -- Graham Greene On the surface a traditional "Bildungsroman" describing the narrator's journey of self-discovery, this huge and complex book is also a panoramic and richly comic portrait of France in the author's lifetime, and a profound meditation on the nature of art, love, time, memory and death. But for most readers it is the characters of the novel who loom the largest: Swann and Odette, Monsieur de Charlus, Morel, the Duchesse de Guermantes, Françoise, Saint-Loup and so many others -- Giants, as the author calls them, immersed in Time. "In Search of Lost Time" is a novel in seven volumes. The novel began to take shape in 1909. Proust continued to work on it until his final illness in the autumn of 1922 forced him to break off. Proust established the structure early on, but even after volumes were initially finished he kept adding new material, and edited one volume after another for publication. The last three of the seven volumes contain oversights and fragmentary or unpolished passages as they existed in draft form at the death of the author; the publication of these parts was overseen by his brother Robert.

Violent Circle Comedy Series Box Set by S.M. Shade 4.8 Stars (73 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Meet the crazy neighbors who live on Violent Circle, where normal is a dirty word. Whether it's battling the town to keep an adult toy shop from being shut down, making it through the college years in an apartment full of guys, or struggling to be a single parent, they always stick together. Book One: Scarlet Toys Living on Violent Circle, a place that's less of a neighborhood and more of an insane asylum poured into the street, I thought I was prepared for anything. After you've seen a woman strip down at the laundry room to wash the clothes she's wearing, then saunter across the street naked, you've seen it all, right? How naïve I was. After the factory closed, leaving me and a good portion of the town unemployed, I took a job managing Scarlet Toys. I knew it wouldn't be a typical work environment, selling adult toys in a town more uptight than a constipated nun, but some things you just never see coming. Like the protesters covered in poison ivy, screaming about smut peddlers. Or a dancing dinosaur named Fappy. Or the allure of the man standing in the center of all the chaos. Wyatt Lawson, a six foot, four inch heap of muscle with a quick smile, ignited my interest in more than the available manager position. Like the missionary one. Or the rodeo. Maybe the side rider. What can I say? I'm an overachiever. Let's just hope he doesn't scare easily. Book Two: Frat Hell Frat Hell. That's how the whole neighborhood refers to the apartment where I live with three other college students. It's a bit judgmental, considering the neighborhood we live in is more like a zoo than an apartment complex, but not inaccurate. If you put that many young guys together, things are bound to be interesting. I still maintain that the giant water guns filled with poison ivy water were not my idea. January Dixon. She's the girl I've lusted after for years. A smart mouth and sharp tongue surrounded by soft beauty and a body I'd give up an organ just to touch. An important organ, like a ...

3D printing offers everybody the opportunity to make a comfortable living servicing even small groups of collectors. As well as a full update on the current state of additive manufacturing, this report focuses mainly on specific niches that are proving to be most well suited to 3D printing. It looks in great length at real people, the products they are selling and the profits they are making. This report does not shy away from giving detailed information on operating costs but also on real world selling prices, with lots of authentic examples. Not only does it identify niche markets that are relatively unknown to outsiders, it examines them in detail, discussing at length their individual merits, why they are appropriate for consumer level 3D printing and their long term future prospects. It includes nearly 400 individual pictures to ensure that new designs and original concepts are easily understood. It explains which products are already being produced and sold, what variations are possible and which markets are rapidly opening up. Some of these opportunities might be considered quite niche in today's global marketplace, but entrepreneurs no longer need a large expensive factory to service these customers. Filled with practical tips on how to optimise your equipment, make the printing process more efficient and save costs, it even explains which extra equipment will be useful to you in the future, showing how to extend your workshop, often using your 3D printer to do so. This is an industry that is still in constant flux. New techniques and new possibilities are being discovered all the time and this report attempts to incorporate many of the very latest developments.

Surrounded by a close knit group of friends and surrogate family she rarely lets anyone get close. Then she meets Seth, the charismatic and charming lead singer of Thin Veneer, a popular band at the local bar scene. Together two unlikely friends learn the pitfalls of love, life and moving on. Amidst the backdrop of college, friendships will be formed, secrets will be revealed, mistakes will be made, lessons will be learned and hearts will be broken... It isn't what happened to her, it's What Happened In Between. REVIEWERS ARE SAYING: 5 stars "It's not an easy journey, and the author has provided Laken with a wonderful array of friends, both male and female. All of these characters are very real to us; they are flawed, but sometimes capable of remarkable acts of kindness and love. All of them make bad choices at times, including Laken. In other words, Scar has written a true portrait of life, the life as experienced by young men and women of college age, who are struggling to come to terms with becoming adults." 5 stars "Wow I was completely blown away by this storyline. First of all I enjoyed that it took place over several years and you were able to see the change in the characters. Though Laken is the main character, you really can't get to to know her without the help of others such as Mandy, Devon, Marie, Alex, Megan and Rick. Each of these characters was developed so great that as a reader you really got to see them as your friends as well. Scar does an amazing job of describing situations so well, without giving you an exact point or straight forward place. And though the ending was a certain way, she is able to give you enough that each reader can have a slightly different ending of their own. I love that feeling when you finish a book and that the story of the character doesn't end there; just like when you say bye to a ...

A Salute to Patriotism: The Life and Work of Major General Howard L. Peckham by Jean Peckham Kavale (Cypress Publishing) 4.4 Stars (32 Reviews)    Price verified 31 minutes ago

A SALUTE TO PATRIOTISM is more than the biography of a dedicated army officer, Howard Louis Peckham. It's also the story of his remarkable family, starting with his ancestors who sailed from England to America in the seventeenth century and their descendants, who bravely served in the Revolutionary War and future wars. It also tells how they dealt with obstacles, tragedy, and success along the highway of life. Additionally, the author brings well-documented insights into her father's career and its significant contribution to the military history of the United States. After graduating from West Point, he served for twenty years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In 1942 he transferred to the Quartermaster Corps and went to Washington, where he headed the Fuels and Lubricants Division of the Quartermaster Corps. While serving concurrently as a member of the Army-Navy Petroleum Board, he testified before Congress about U.S. Army petroleum needs. For his meritorious work of procuring fuels and allocating them to our armed forces worldwide, he was awarded a Distinguished Service Medal. In postwar Paris, Howard Peckham headed the American Graves Registration Command and returned more than 80,000 American war dead to the United States. Approximately 60,000 others were interred in ten permanent American cemeteries in Europe, graded and constructed under his command. After his return to the United States, he served in highly responsible positions until his army retirement in 1956. As a civilian, his patriotic service continued when he worked for the Free Europe Committee (secretly funded by the CIA) and traveled abroad to meet with Western European diplomats. His goal was to get them more involved in the Committee's work. Nations behind the Iron Curtain peacefully freed from Communist domination, Howard Peckham believed, would ensure more security for the United States. FROM THE AUTHOR: My father's major World War II story, for which he received a DSM medal, included ...

Dead and Moaning in Las Vegas by Brandon Meyers 4.2 Stars (52 Reviews)    Price verified 31 minutes ago

This is a humorous story about the zombie invasion of Las Vegas. Many things are lost in Las Vegas: innocence, paychecks, Little Scotty's college fund. But the worst of all... is humanity. Once a man's been bitten by lady luck, the hunger becomes infectious, and before he knows it he'll chew the arm off the guy sitting next to him just to win a hand of poker. Especially if he's a zombie. Las Vegas has been overrun by flesh-eating, undead monsters that are now flooding the Strip and obliterating everything in their wake -- cars, tourists, and even casinos. First on their path of destruction: the Olympus, Las Vegas's premiere hotel and casino, which is currently housing a human buffet-line that's been trapped inside by a poorly thought-out, self-locking alarm. Amid the chaos of hungry zombies are a handful of survivors not yet food for the slow (but persistent) tourists-turned-undead: a guitar-wielding Elvis impersonator and his nostril-mining son, a feminist stripper, and an alcoholic janitor whose drunken hijinks might just be the only thing keeping him alive. Cornered inside an overflowing casino, the only place for this rag tag crew to go is out, but is there any place safe? Can they evade the soulless Bobby Darin impersonator who's become unofficial king of the zombies? Have the zombies taken over every last casino in Vegas? Or were they always there to begin with? Written by the co-authors of the popular web-comic A Beer for the Shower, and the novel The Missing Link.

The Orphan Ship by Sterling R. Walker 4.6 Stars (88 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

The Orphan Ship by Sterling R. Walker Stranded 225 million kilometers from home on Mars Station, cousins Jake O'Brien and Lorina Murphy are drawn into a fledgling effort to help the hundreds of abandoned street children who call the station home. Jake becomes a medical apprentice in an outreach clinic, while Lorina volunteers at a juvenile shelter. They soon discover that their efforts may be in vain because something much more serious than poverty plagues Mars Station. Also stranded on Mars Station, ship's captain Danae Shepherd faces the difficult task of hiring replacement crew after an alien virus claims the lives of four in her employ, including her husband. She stumbles upon the same problem that has Jake and Lorina stumped: why are homeless children disappearing without a trace? What reviewers are saying about The Orphan Ship: "Authors have the ability to open a reader's eyes to the situation around them as well as the situations possible in the future. The trick here is captivating the reader to the point that the severity of the situation resonates to the reader. If you don't care enough about a character to begin with, when the big events happen you kinda just shrug your shoulders and say "eh." However, this is not the case with The Orphan Ship. The characters are woven so intricately together with the plot that it is impossible not to care about them, especially when they begin to see past their own concerns in order to benefit the lives around them. I will always be the first to tell you that fantasy or science fiction stories aren't typically my deal. But the humanistic interest in this book made reading worth it. This is a solid read that isn't just fluff. And for those science-fiction buffs, you are guaranteed an enjoying read." - Mari Jensen (Bookrated.com) "The Orphan Ship is Sterling R. Walker's first sci-fi book. Spaceships? Check. Humans living on other planets? Check. Advanced technology? Check. In other words, it has all the elements ...

OCW (Volume 1): The Re-Creation by TL Brown Price verified 8 hours ago

"What's an E-fed?" That is all I have heard since beginning this story, so I'll explain: The E-fed, or fantasy wrestling, represents the genre of both role-playing and statistics-based games and set in the world of pro wrestling. Many variants of this exist. Examples include websites, message boards, e-mail, regular mail, etc. Storylines are determined and the roster is composed of characters created by the players. In this collection of books that make up the first volume of an epic series, the lesser known existence of the e-fed style is shown in a similar style. In the OCW, there are easily over thirty characters that all have their own stories to tell. In these pages, names are made, stories begin and fights... keep things interesting.

Internet Book Piracy: The Fight to Protect Authors, Publishers, and Our Culture by Gini Graham Scott (Allworth) Price verified 10 hours ago

The international battle against Internet pirates has been heating up. Increasingly law enforcement is paying attention to book piracy as ebook publishing gains an ever-larger market share. With this threat to their health and even survival, publishers and authors must act much like the music, film, and software giants that have waged war against pirates for the past two decades. Now, The Battle against Internet Piracy opens a discussion on what happens to the victims of piracy. Drawing from a large number of interviews—from writers, self-publishers, mainstream publishers, researchers, students, admitted pirates, free speech advocates, attorneys, and local and international law enforcement officials—the text speaks to such issues as: •Why pirates have acted and how they feel about it •The conflict over constitutional rights and piracy •The current laws surrounding Internet piracy •Examples of cases taken against some pirates •Alternatives to piracy •Personal experiences of being ripped off •The ways piracy affects different industries and how they've responded Author Gini Graham Scott prepares readers to arm themselves against these modern perils by learning about copyright, infringement, and how to prevent, combat, and end book piracy. Allworth Press, an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing, publishes a broad range of books on the visual and performing arts, with emphasis on the business of art. Our titles cover subjects such as graphic design, theater, branding, fine art, photography, interior design, writing, acting, film, how to start careers, business and legal forms, business practices, and more. While we don't aspire to publish a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are deeply committed to quality books that help creative professionals succeed and thrive. We often publish in areas overlooked by other publishers and welcome the author whose expertise can help our audience of readers.

Innocent Eyes (A Cane Novel Book 1) by Charlotte E Hart 4.0 Stars (111 Reviews)    Price verified 14 hours ago

"If he's gross, I'm bailing." That's what I said to my supposed best friend when she asked me to take her place. A blind date, she said. What harm could it do? He was charming. Beautiful. God's finest creation. He wined me and dined me. Made me do things I'd never before dreamt of in the bedroom. It was perfect. Dangerous. Arousing. But Jenny didn't tell me the full story. She didn't tell me about the debt she owed. And now Quinn Cane wants his money's worth, and he's going to make me pay whatever way he can. "A debt needs to be paid." The woman who came to meet me didn't owe me money. I could tell by her innocent eyes. Still, the debt will be paid either way. She was something to play with and use as I saw fit, but something about Emily Brooks made me want to keep her. So she became my dirty girl. Pure. Innocent. Mine. Then she whispered my damned name and invaded my world, changing its reasoning. She wasn't meant to break the rules. But she rolled my dice and won. Shame. Forgiveness. Dark. Erotic. Romance. This book is intended for mature audiences. 18+ only.

And this is for good reason. After its founding sometime in the 10th century BCE, Sparta soon rose to be one of the most powerful city-states in not only the Greek but the entire ancient world. Perhaps the most significant achievement in all of Spartan history, though, was their defeat of the Athenians in the Peloponnesian War. This conflict, which lasted roughly 30 years, put the two greatest Greek city-states of the time, Athens and Sparta, up against one another, and the result, a Spartan victory, helped to reshape the entire ancient world. It ushered in a period of Spartan hegemony which was radically different than when the Athenians sat atop the Greek world. Bears by the Numbers: A Complete Team History of the Chicago Bears by Uniform Number by Lew Freedman (Sports Publishing) 4.8 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 17 hours ago

What do Al Campana, Frank Dempsey, Stan Wallace, Don Mullins, Gale Sayers, and Steve Trimble all have in common? They all wore number 40 for the Chicago Bears, even though more than four decades passed between the last time Campana last pulled on his jersey and the number was retired for Sayers in 1994 (along with 51 for Dick Butkus). Since the Chicago Bears first adopted uniform numbers in 1932, the team has handed out only 99 numbers to more than 1,000 players. That's a lot of overlap. It also makes for a lot of good stories. Bears by the Numbers tells those stories for every Bear since '32, from Red Grange to Pernell McPhee. This book lists the players alphabetically and by number; these biographies help trace the history of one of football's oldest and most beloved teams in a new way. For Bears fans, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Bears by the Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even those they think they already know.

The Election by Darryl Greer 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 19 hours ago

One body was not supposed to be uncovered -- but it was -- and the silent shadows it lets loose haunt the past, the present and, unless one man prevails, they will haunt the future too. Darryl Greer takes the reader from New Guinea's Kokoda Track where a young digger dies an agonising death to present day Australia where, in one year, the nation is threatened by virulent anarchy and by the greed and arrogance of a secret organisation. There are murders and the echoes of old wartime atrocities, a search for evidence, assassinations and dead people who torment the living as the hero, Michael Takada, is drawn even further into a world of darkness and conspiracy. The force he needs to confront is cunning and evil... and wants Michael for itself. But, if he does not act against what resides in the shadows, more innocents will be murdered. The catch -- and there's always a catch -- is that Michael's own heritage could be his downfall. Greer has his hands full as he gives us themes of disclosure and redemption, good versus evil, order versus anarchy, with a liberal dosing of most of the deadly sins and a few of the mildly toxic ones on full display. The Election is no humdrum, formulaic whodunit. It is an authentic gut-wrenching, page-turning, corpse-mouldering, firestorm-igniting, corruption-revealing, killer-rampaging masterpiece.

Hell's Highway by G. Daniel Cole (Createspace) 4.0 Stars (24 Reviews)    Price verified 20 hours ago

Having been blessed with a rich, full life, I must with all due humility confess that very little moves me anymore. I've seen and experienced the self-sacrifice and beauty that only the deepest of loves can bestow. I have been poisoned and hardened by man's inhumanity to man. Having said that, imagine my soul-stirring surprise when my friend Danny Cole sent me, almost apologetically, the first chapter of what became this book, seeking my opinion. The thing was, you see, Danny Cole had never before written anything in the way of books, short stories, poetry, etc. But he had something he needed to express and about halfway through his twenty-second year of sobriety he felt the time had come to express it. Not that he isn't a creative artist. Anyone who has ever seen the photographs of his loving tribute to his daughter Gloria, named Gloria Gardens, that he designed and constructed stone by stone in his back yard couldn't help but realize that. Anyone who has ever seen his photography would also realize his artistic talent. What follows here is true artistry as well... it is a story of depravity, deprivation and cruelty... a story of angels with razor wire halos. It is a story of guts, determination, learning the hard way, the law of the jungle and human kindness even in the vilest of circumstances. It is the story of a life that never stood a chance... except for the guy that lived it: G. Daniel Cole and the merciful God that was watching over him. Whether you are a troubled soul struggling with tragedies that appear insurmountable, or one privileged to say "there but for the grace of God go I"... from start to finish this story will move you to the very depths of your Being. That every minute of it was lived by the man who put these words to paper only adds to its deep and eternal message. With an abiding sense of privilege to have witnessed its birth, I now invite you to read Hell's Highway... a story that will stay with you for the rest of your life. John W. ...

The Skipton Haunting: Curse of the Red Ribbon Witch by Andrew John Bell (Independant Publisher) 5.0 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 21 hours ago

Once connected, never can a bond be broken... Relocating from the quiet suburbs of London to the industrial northern town of Newton Escomb, to a small cul-de-sac there named Skipton Road, was already a challenge in itself for Christopher Joyce and his family -- yet, they had no idea of what malevolent horrors awaited them there. Unbeknown to them, the Joyce's new home bore a terrible and bloody past. It was plagued by wicked entities, twisted deeds, death, and witchcraft. Although, not all was as it seemed. Christopher was a firm sceptic of anything supernatural, as was his wife, Amy, but that would soon change after two demonic beings made their presences and sordid intentions known through many terrifying apparitions and vivid nightmares. Already held in a vulnerable state of mind, Amy gradually succumbed to the powerful influence of these dark spirits, namely a fallen witch who possessed a desperate thirst for vengeance against men -- Sabina. As their connection grew, the bond between Amy and Sabina, Christopher was left with little choice but to act. After all, he had his and Amy's young children to protect as well. Through the help of strangers and past acquaintances of Skipton Road, Christopher steadily became obsessed with discovering the truth behind what now haunted his family. However, there lurked an even greater darkness within the shadows -- Baal, an ancient demon -- Sabina's master. The Joyce family had unwittingly found themselves embroiled in a battle between the warring spirits, and it would change their lives forever. Sequel to 'The Skipton Haunting: Tale of the Red Ribbon Witch', but can also be read as a stand-alone novel. The demonic entities entailed are based on an actual haunting the author and his family experienced in 2016. Names of characters and certain places have been changed to help protect identities of those involved.

Slavery in Florida: Territorial Days to Emancipation by Larry Eugene Rivers (University Press of Florida) 5.0 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified 31 minutes ago

This important illustrated social history of slavery tells what life was like for bond servants in Florida from 1821 to 1865, offering new insights from the perspective of both slave and master. Starting with an overview of the institution as it evolved during the Spanish and English periods, Larry E. Rivers looks in detail and in depth at the slave experience, noting the characteristics of slavery in the Middle Florida plantation belt (the more traditional slave-based, cotton-growing economy and society) as distinct from East and West Florida (which maintained some attitudes and traditions of Spain). He examines the slave family, religion, resistance activity, slaves' participation in the Civil War, and their social interactions with whites, Indians, other slaves, and masters. Rivers also provides a dramatic account of the hundreds of armed free blacks and runaways among the Seminole, Creek, and Mikasuki Indians on the peninsula, whose presence created tensions leading to the great slave rebellion, the Second Seminole War (1835-42). Slavery in Florida is built upon painstaking research into virtually every source available on the subject--a wealth of historic documents, personal papers, slave testimonies, and census and newspaper reports. This serious critical work strikes a balance between the factual and the interpretive. It will be significant to all readers interested in slavery, the Civil War, the African American experience, and Florida and southern U.S. history, and it could serve as a comprehensive resource for secondary school teachers and students.

Black Miami in the Twentieth Century (Florida History and Culture) by Marvin Dunn (University Press of Florida) 5.0 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 31 minutes ago

The first book devoted to the history of African Americans in south Florida and their pivotal role in the growth and development of Miami, Black Miami in the Twentieth Century traces their triumphs, drudgery, horrors, and courage during the first 100 years of the city's history. Firsthand accounts and over 130 photographs, many of them never published before, bring to life the proud heritage of Miami's black community. Beginning with the legendary presence of black pirates on Biscayne Bay, Marvin Dunn sketches the streams of migration by which blacks came to account for nearly half the city's voters at the turn of the century. From the birth of a new neighborhood known as "Colored Town," Dunn traces the blossoming of black businesses, churches, civic groups, and fraternal societies that made up the black community. He recounts the heyday of "Little Broadway" along Second Avenue, with photos and individual recollections that capture the richness and vitality of black Miami's golden age between the wars. A substantial portion of the book is devoted to the Miami civil rights movement, and Dunn traces the evolution of Colored Town to Overtown and the subsequent growth of Liberty City. He profiles voting rights, housing and school desegregation, and civil disturbances like the McDuffie and Lozano incidents, and analyzes the issues and leadership that molded an increasingly diverse community through decades of strife and violence. In concluding chapters, he assesses the current position of the community--its socioeconomic status, education issues, residential patterns, and business development--and considers the effect of recent waves of immigration from Latin America and the Caribbean. Dunn combines exhaustive research in regional media and archives with personal interviews of pioneer citizens and longtime residents in a work that documents as never before the life of one of the most important black communities in the United States.

Wounded Minds: Understanding and Solving the Growing Menace of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder by John Liebert (Skyhorse) 4.5 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified 22 hours ago

A compelling look at one of the most pressing public health issues of our time. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. John Liebert, a psychiatrist who has treated hundreds of veterans, and Dr. William Birnes, a New York Times bestselling author, uncover the disturbing truths about post-traumatic stress disorder among veterans. Using scientific, historical, and anecdotal evidence, these two experts reveal why PTSD is on the rise, the threats it poses to society, and how the military is dramatically failing to give their men and women the help they desperately need. In addition, Liebert and Birnes detail the cutting-edge methods that have been developed to help soldiers heal the emotional wounds of combat. Wounded Minds also provides readers with fascinating analyses of several high-profile suicide and massacre cases, including Staff Sergeant Robert Bales's murder of sixteen Afghan citizens and Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who opened fire on a room full of defenseless American troops. Through these stories, the authors further illustrate the very real threat posed by post-traumatic stress disorder. They also explain how to diagnose and understand the brain abnormalities associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, the diagnostic problems confronting military medicine today, and what we can do now and in the future to curb this devastating epidemic.
