The Topography of Modernity: Karl Philipp Moritz and the Space of Autonomy (Signale: Modern German Letters, Cultures, and Thought) by Elliott Schreiber (Cornell University Press and Cornell University Library) Price verified 6 minutes ago

Karl Philipp Moritz (d. 1793) was one of the most innovative writers of the late Enlightenment in Germany. A novelist, travel writer, editor, and teacher he is probably best known today for his autobiographical novel Anton Reiser (1785-90) and for his treatises on aesthetics, foremost among them Über die bildende Nachahmung des Schönen (On the Formative Imitation of the Beautiful) (1788). In this treatise, Moritz develops the concept of aesthetic autonomy, which became widely known after Goethe included a lengthy excerpt of it in his own Italian Journey (1816-17). It was one of the foundational texts of Weimar classicism, and it became pivotal for the development of early Romanticism. In The Topography of Modernity, Elliott Schreiber gives Moritz the credit he deserves as an important thinker beyond his contributions to aesthetic theory. Indeed, he sees Moritz as an incisive early observer and theorist of modernity. Considering a wide range of Moritz's work including his novels, his writings on mythology, prosody, and pedagogy, and his political philosophy and psychology, Schreiber shows how Moritz's thinking developed in response to the intellectual climate of the Enlightenment and paved the way for later social theorists to conceive of modern society as differentiated into multiple, competing value spheres.

Blessed Is He Who Watches: The book of Revelation - A historicist interpretation by Carol White 3.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 17 minutes ago

Today, there are four main approaches to interpreting the book of Revelation: the idealist approach; the preterist approach; the futurist approach; and the historicist approach - which is followed here. This approach to interpreting Revelation finds little favour today and will be unfamiliar to many Christians. However, it is by no means novel. It has been the approach adopted by many Protestant commentators since the Reformation, and it still has its adherents today. A historicist interpretation views the book of Revelation as a revelation and prediction of the most important events affecting the church during the course of the gospel age. In common with the other approaches, it also seeks to draw general truths and lessons from the book. However, unlike the others, it sees the prophecy of the book being fulfilled in the unfolding history of this present age, from John's time to the return of Christ. The hope of the author is that what is offered here will help the reader to understand the time in which we live, and so be better equipped to serve God and to stand in the midst of the testing things that are happening in our day. About the author: Carol White lives in Teddington, Greater London. She was converted in 1980 after spending 28 years as a convinced atheist. Her church affiliation has been with Baptist and Independent Evangelical churches.

Fortune Favors the Cruel (Dark Maji Book 1) by Kel Carpenter 4.6 Stars (178 Reviews)    Price verified 25 minutes ago

Throne of Glass meets Black Jewels in this twisted yet alluring dark fantasy tale. Quinn Darkova, freed from the chains of slavery, wants nothing more than vengeance against those who sold her. But with her dark powers on the rise and her ascension nearing, Quinn's blood retribution will have to wait in favor of her immediate survival. Lazarus Fierté is a nobleman without equal. He's as controlling as he is stubborn, and for the last six years he's been waiting for a woman to appear -- but not just any woman. A Maji of great power, capable of terrible things. She could be the key to everything he holds dear. His savior... or his destroyer. The only thing he didn't predict was that she would become both. *Please note, this is a dark fantasy series. There is a heavy romance subplot between two consenting adults but the material is dark in nature. The characters are not heroes. This isn't a story about saving the day. If you're looking for a series that's romance dressed up as fantasy, this is NOT it. If you're looking for Game of Thrones level of fantasy, this will have too much romance for you. If you want a dark fantasy about characters that are antiheroes on their best days and the villains on their worst... this is for you.*

Why was James, besides currently suffering from post-traumatic stress, not their first choice? President Harold Willis is trapped in a whirlpool of lies and deception with his clandestine intelligence and the NSA as the encrypted secret Golden Codes cannot be hacked. With no cooperation from MI6, Mossad, counter intelligence or any other covert agency, war game nuclear bomb analyses declares treason and the hunt for a traitor is launched. The initial threat of external Cyber warfare is eliminated. Kings Rule by Joseph Dulmage 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Kings Rule looks carefully at Israel's divided monarchy, 975 BC - 582 BC. As both kingdoms' development unfurls, succeeding kings from Judah and Israel are studied in chronological order. Commentary, although thorough is not overly encyclopedic. Scripture interprets scripture, consequently, I have endeavored to let the Bible present its own story. Sermon and lesson helps occur frequently throughout the text. Part Two offers a number of important studies concerning God's mystery relationship with Israel. Several parables present further explanation on the kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of God. The work is designed for Bible students, teachers, and preachers.

The End May Be Much Nearer Than We Think by James Thomas Lee Jr 2.9 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

In my adult Sunday school class on December 12, 1982, I spoke to the class about the Theory of Evolution and expressed my beliefs about how that theory is affecting our life and how it will lead to the Great Tribulation. Remarkable as such a statement may sound I believe it to be very much the truth. Therefore, I have written this book to retrace the steps that led to the above lecture and also to share my findings concerning the relationship that exists between the Theory of Evolution and the Great Tribulation. I hope to relate in this summary not just a review of that Sunday morning class but also to provide a trail of my research. Perhaps, after reading these pages, my reader will be led to conclude, as I already have, that the end may be much nearer than we think. Chapter one will present the reason for all of my research. In trying to teach the Book of Revelation, I found several questions about the Great Tribulation that I could not answer but felt should be answered. With all of those questions on my mind, I left the Book of Revelation knowing that my learning was not complete and that it would not be complete until I learned some more answers about the Tribulation. Chapter two will move away from the Tribulation for a bit and follow the class into a study of the book of Genesis. However, it will appear again based on my examination of that one book right after having studied the other. From that sequence of events, I was able to see that the accounts of those two seemingly unrelated events, Creation and the Tribulation, were drawn closer and closer. In chapter three, the Theory of Evolution will be shown to be the catalyst that will eventually set off the Great Tribulation. That chapter will discuss the devil and his tactics and also look at four reasons why the Tribulation may be near. Finally, in chapter four, the Book of Revelation will be examined again in narrative form to answer those questions that had initially been raised in chapter one. I know ...

Clyde Connor: Historical Western Romance - Book 1 Montana Law Men Series by SALLY PLATT (Enchanted Barn Press) 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified one hour ago

WHEN THAT MAIL ORDER BRIDE PLAN DID NOT WORK OUT... The day Miss Janette Novak, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, put her little white button-up shoe out of the stagecoach door and onto the dirt road that was known at the time, humorously, as Main Street in Trizbee, Montana, Sheriff Clyde Connor was in the middle of responding to death and destruction. Literally. And for the longest while Sheriff Clyde Connor had no idea what brought Janette Novak -- or her two cousins, Abigail Willetts and Lucy O'Brien -- all the way from back East to the Wild West of Montana. But, then again, it did not matter. Because, as the Sheriff, Clyde Connor had a certain duty to take care of Miss Janette Novak anyway. However, and though they most certainly overlap in some ways, duty is one thing and love is quite another. And love for one another that arises even in the face of trying circumstances... well, that kind of love is usually the strongest. And Clyde and Janette did face trying circumstances. After all, this was the West. And Clyde Connor was a law man. But, the question was, would those two be able to find a way to overcome the obstacles and get on the same sheet of beautiful music -- before it was too late? Network Virus: A tale of rape and child abduction. (Adventure, Mystery, Romance (AMR) Book 8) by Michael Hillier (KSF Publishing) 3.5 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Extracts from the novel:- She groaned as she slid off the car bonnet and lay in a heap on the ground, panting and exhausted. Tears of humiliation trickled down her face, smearing the mascara over her cheeks. She was wet and dirty and half-naked. She felt utterly spoiled. So this, she thought dumbly, is what rape is really like. If we have any problems with you - anything at all - I don´t think there is a chance we could get to you before the mob had torn you apart and cut off your goolies. They want you to look very young. They tried it with a ten-year-old but she was useless, even though they´d explained it all in advance and she said she understood. It´s my daughter - she hasn´t come home from school. She´s nearly thirteen, but she is quite small and skinny. Unless she does herself up, she doesn´t look much more than ten or eleven. I don´t know what to do. I don´t want to go out looking for her and not be here if she turns up. I presume you are aware that, for all her pneumatic charms and her willingness, the girl is still under the age of consent. You'll be in deep trouble, my lad, if the police decide to take action against you.

Sutter's Country Home for Children: Laurie Kast-Klein by Laurie Kast-Klein 3.9 Stars (44 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

She had seen it all. The social workers would pull up with a kid. Aunt Clara and Uncle Dan would greet them in the driveway, all smiles and handshakes. Before the road dust had settled from the departing worker's car, the kid would be given the low-down on living here. The low-down was what everyone called the rules. Don't speak unless spoken to. Do what you are told, when you are told. Never touch the telephone. "The sooner you fall into line, the better off you will be," Uncle Dan always piped in. Some of the kids cried, some kicked and screamed when they realized their predicament. That's what the chamber was for. The Chamber was merely a downstairs storage closet. Those that couldn't settle in the way they were expected had to be given the chamber treatment.

Chasing Ghosts: The Quentin Strange Mysteries Book 1 by Dean Cole 4.6 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Haunted pasts. Terrifying apparitions. Dark secrets. Quentin Strange is... well, strange. But it isn't just his anachronistic sayings and dress sense, the fact that he's a socially awkward, book-loving loner who's possibly still a virgin at nearly thirty. He's seeing and hearing things. Odd things. Ghostly things. Getting the gig as photographer for The Cricklewood Gazette, he travels with his new partner, journalist Katrina (make sure you call her Kat) Brannigan, to Hilderley Manor, an enormous manor house nestled in the remote countryside of Northern England that is believed to be one of Britain's most haunted buildings. The pair join a ghost hunting team and a group of fellow guests for a long weekend of ghostly activities. But something dark haunts the draughty corridors of the house. And it links to a decades-old mystery that is about to be uncovered. A mystery like no other. A story of the supernatural. Of death, and what it does to the living. The first book in a new series, Chasing Ghosts is a quirky British mystery that explores the supernatural elements of our world with touches of LGBT romance, humour and horror.

His brilliantly observed slices of life allow us to visit places we may not normally choose to enter and to walk a few miles in the shoes of others.
