The Adored by Tom Connolly 4.1 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

On the day before Winston Trout's wedding, his best men, 6 childhood friends from pre-school, will have difficulty getting to the church on time. One is in jail, arrested for murder. Two others have been hauled in by investigators from the SEC on charges of insider trading. A fourth is in Puerto Rico with a new love before he must return to duty as a Navy Seal in Afghanistan. The fifth, a gay man, is being tempted to switch sides. The sixth is trying to keep his promise to Winston to have all these men at the church on time. The Adored is a story rich in character, in the style of Tolstoy. It follows the lives of seven boys who bond in pre-school and who come of age in New York. It weaves a tapestry of interconnected lives on the global stage of privilege and power. Edward Wheelwright, a son of that privilege, is now a striver attempting to regain his family's fortune lost in the great recession. The love of his life, Val McGuire, is attempting to regain Eddie, lost to the lustrous Santa Alba. Eddie, Val and their closest friends are fully engaged in life - they work at the top of their father's businesses, they fall in love, they cheat on each other, and they trade on insider information. Yet, there is a goodness in each of the characters who work at redeeming themselves - some succeed. A problem lingers: one of them committed a murder as a teenager and an innocent young black man is serving time for it. Along the way these seven men from the 1% have starkly different lives but remain connected by an umbilical cord stretching back to the privileged life that began in preschool. Vito Boriello, an industrious sleuth with the Stamford Police Department, attempts to sort the good guys from the bad. There is no assurance he will be successful.

The Bat: a coming of age story and a search after truth. (The Red Grouse Tales) by Leslie Garland 4.2 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

What is true? What is truth? An adult, speculative, spiritual and philosophical coming of age story. An old and now sceptical Thomas looks back on the events of his last term at school when his class returned to a new beautiful class teacher, a donation of stuffed animals and birds by an eccentric benefactor and the increasingly strange events which followed. Zoological specimens appeared to be not quite as dead as they looked. A bell-jar which had contained a stuffed bat shattered during an exorcism, after which what had been strange events turned to being sinister and frightening. As a then young and naive Thomas searched for the truth, he found himself, questioning 'good and evil', realising that his task is not as simple and straightforward as he would have wished and in so doing loosing his innocence and having to accept that belief may have as much to do with truth as do facts. (Warning to sensitive readers; the story is an adult one and so does contain references to sex)

Climies by Michael J. Vaughn 4.0 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

"The Handmaid's Tale" meets climate change. Russell Peppers emerges from a curious labyrinth to find that the world has changed. He kayaks over underwater towns, past woods cut in two by new shorelines, and meets Mimi, owner of a Victorian that cruises the bay atop a barge. The survivor community of Skyline is beautiful, but the erratic weather and a drowned metropolis point to a species that fell prey to its own greed. "CLIMIES makes for a captivating read. All of the advanced technology created to accommodate itself to life post global warming was ingenious. Alice in Wonderland (Al S), and a dystopian Willy Wonkaesque quality magnified a trillion times via a post apocalyptic re-engineering of the remnants of a galaxy, interspersed with a moving story line of a lost boy and the political dynamics of the Climies vs. right wing Patriots, contributed towards a timely and novel approach informed by the mayhem characteristics of a surreal era. Parts of the backstory are traumatic and yet Russell, the lead character, is perpetually cocooned in a comforting naiveté. The touches of whimsical talking cats and dogs and musical blackberries add to a wistful, magical backdrop. And that warm presence of Mimi's nurturance, the giddiness of young love, and the emergence of flawed but substantive father figures equate to a mysterious yet oddly reassuring parallel universe we can access by merely closing our eyes and breathing deeply." -- Calder Lowe, Editor, DNA Ezine

Evenfield by Rachel Ferguson (Dean Street Press) 3.5 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

This book was written for those who don't despise children's parties, Edwardian actresses, dancing classes and the scent of lilac over sun-warmed fences. Barbara Morant spent a crucial part of her childhood in the unremarkable suburban house which lends this novel its name. For her siblings, it's merely a place to live; for her mother, it's a symbol of the provincial drudgery of suburban living. But for Barbara, the house and the routines of those years are invested with a halo of happiness, and she yearns for them long after the family's return to London. Her obsessive nostalgia, the pursuit of her childhood joys, lead her to attempt a recreation of the past. She leases the house, undoes the changes made in the intervening years, and moves in, only to find the past irretrievably changed and changed by her later knowledge and experiences. Lushly packed with domestic detail and references to popular culture, household products, advertisements, songs, décor, and pastimes, Evenfield provides us with a hilarious but surprisingly profound exploration of childhood and the way it's remembered (and misremembered) by adults, and of the vanity of searching for lost time. Rachel Ferguson - known for earlier classics The Brontës Went to Woolworth's, A Footman for the Peacock and Alas, Poor Lady - gives us here her own unique variation on Proust. This new edition includes an introduction by social historian Elizabeth Crawford. 'It is only (now) that I realise how much... my work owes to the delicacy and variety of Rachel Ferguson's exploration of the real and the dreamed of, or the made up, or desired.' A.S. Byatt

Chris Boyden loved Matt VanderVeen since junior high. But growing up gay in the Bible belt of west Michigan was difficult, and unlike Matt, he wasn't brave enough to face the prejudice head-on. Especially when his family told him over and over that he wouldn't be able to attend college without a scholarship. Back in high school, he worried that coming out would get him kicked off the baseball team or make recruiters reluctant to scout him. Eventually, Matt broke up with him when he couldn't handle being Chris's secret boyfriend any longer, but college has given them a second chance -- if Chris has the courage to take it. When a terrible injury puts Chris's baseball scholarship in jeopardy, it reminds Chris of all the reasons he stayed in the closet to begin with, and his ultra-masculine father's expectations and thoughtless homophobia aren't helping. Baseball has always been Chris's hope for the future, but now that dream could cost him Matt's love. NOTE: This eBook novelette is a re-release. Her throat tightened as her mouth became dryer than a desert. "Y-Yes, alright." She stuttered. "I am in your service." In all honesty, Mina could not refuse. She owed this woman everything for providing refuge after her husband's passing. Without her, there was no telling where Mina would be. "I want you to become a mail-order-bride. There's a wealthy rancher owner out west who wants to donate his money toward building a school in his town. It's a noble effort but there is no one capable of teaching the children. I have corresponded with this man and I deem he's a good soul who will be able to provide for you and your children - should you accept - as I know you will." She paused to take a sip of her tea. "In return, you'll become headmistress of your very own school and you can do with it as you wish." Mina blinked in utter surprise. "Ma'am... " It was all she could say as her mind fizzled with the thought of putting her future in a man's hands once more. She didn't want to relive all the misery and heartache of sharing a bed with someone she didn't love. Excerpt: Frustrated with its deadlock with the ogre the stallion pranced back out of reach and turned, sprinting towards a new target. It easily leapt over the ankylosaurus and thundered towards the girls. Amy lashed out with a beam of gold light that skittered around the unicorn, lights shimmering and dissolving on contact with its powerful aura. Ignoring the spell it ate up the distance to Helen who stood uncertainly as she eyed the behemoth eating up the distance towards her. "Honestly you two" Lorelei said making a gesture with her hands and speaking words in her harsh guttural language that sent the two ladies tumbling into the underbrush, lifted none too gently by unseen arcane forces. She set her own shields against the momentum of the powerful beast who shattered them on impact and lowered its horn to impale her. She spun with her trademark grace and quickness, managing to avoid the horn but caught a back kick from a hoof that shattered her wrist. Despite her training and will she still emitted a shrill shriek at the tremendous jolt of agony that went through her. Without a thought Amy ran to her side and placed her hand over the wrist. Lorelei bit her lip to prevent any sounds from this new pain. Amy channeled the energy inside her, stoking it like a furnace til warm healing energy poured thickly out of her. Lorelei's splintered bones in her wrist fused together and no longer poked ghoulishly through her skin. Then both the dark elf and the red head cried again in pain as their incompatible magics clashed against ...

The Badlands War by DEREK WEISMAN 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 10 hours ago

A friend of mine always said that stupidity is forever. That we follow the same routine that our fathers follow. If I heed to his warning, I probably wouldn't be in this wasteland. Trying to escape from a broken heart, I ended up in a Desert hellhole far from home. The heat is merciless, the water-scarce, and the enemy worse than a plague of locust. But most of all, the incompetent of our leaders were wearing us all down. As death comes ever so close, I knew there is no chance I will see home. For home was nothing more than a torturous dream. There is nothing for me but my canteen, my gun, and my brothers in arms.

Ink, Red, Dead: A Cozy Hobby Mystery (Kiki Lowenstein Cozy Mystery Series Book 3) by Joanna Campbell Slan (Spot On Publishing) 4.4 Stars (183 Reviews)    Price verified 9 minutes ago

AS MANY SECRETS AS PILES OF STUFF -- MURDER IN A HOARDER'S HAVEN... The phrase "hostess with the mostest" takes on a whole new meaning when crafty amateur sleuth Kiki Lowenstein finds herself stuck in the middle of a hoarder's crime scene in the third installment of the Joanna Slan's cozy mystery series. But proceed with caution: this one's as littered with surprises as it is clutter. Scrapbook maven Kiki happens to be a card-carrying Episcopalian -- but she respects the power of intuition. So when she has a "bad feeling" en route to Marla Lever's house for a scrapbooking crop, she heeds her instincts. Something is definitely very wrong. Marla's nowhere to be seen, although her car's in the garage -- buried under a heap of garbage and lawn furniture. Tip of the iceberg, sadly. Because the potential horror of scrapbooking in a hoarder's paradise pales in comparison to the body the cops find in Marla's freezer. Marla's nearly dead herself -- passed out from heat stroke, no thanks to the suffocating aroma of her 101 feline friends. Or so it seems... But the hoarding and the human popsicle aside, something about her circumstances just doesn't seem right to Kiki -- whose insatiable curiosity and endearing persistence make her an ace amateur sleuth. For one, why would Marla turn off her A/C in the thick of a heat wave when she's expecting company? Alongside her coworkers at Time in a Bottle scrapbooking store (some more delightful than others), and with a helping hand from her longtime crush Detective Chad Detweiler, Kiki digs deep into a treasure trove of clues -- from Marla's semi-estranged children to her barely-touched inheritance -- meticulously gluing the pieces together as only a scrapbooker could. But it's only a matter of time until curiosity kills the cat -- or until Kiki's spidey sense winds her down a path even more treacherous than one of Marla's hallways. To say that "Ink, Red, Dead" is a page-turner is an understatement. Readers will tear ...

A Footman for the Peacock by Rachel Ferguson (Dean Street Press) 4.0 Stars (9 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

The peacock displayed himself and paraded the lawn, sometimes pausing to look up at the sky. Waiting? Listening? Guiding. No. Signalling. Controversial when first published in the early days of World War II, due to its treatment of a loathsome upper-crust family dodging wartime responsibility, A Footman for the Peacock can now be enjoyed as a scathing satire of class abuses, a comic masterpiece falling somewhere between Barbara Pym and Monty Python. Sir Edmund and Lady Evelyn Roundelay live surrounded by a menagerie of relations and retainers. The Roundelays' history of callous cruelty is literally etched on a window of the servants' quarters with the words "Heryn I dye, Thomas Picocke. 1792". Sir Edmund reflects cheerfully on the running footmen who have 'died off like flies' in the family's service. But now -- amidst digressions on everything from family history and servant woes to the villagers' linguistic peculiarities and a song immortalizing the footman's plight -- war threatens the Roundelays' smug superiority. What's more, it appears that the estate's peacock is a reincarnation of Thomas Picocke, and may be aiding the Nazi cause... By turns giddy and incisive, hilarious and heartbreaking, A Footman for the Peacock is Rachel Ferguson at her very best. This new edition features an introduction by Elizabeth Crawford. 'The Roundelays are people to live with and laugh at and love' Punch

Croaked: (Short Story) Comedy-Thriller by T. E Antonino 3.9 Stars (13 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

From the comedically unhinged mind of T. E. Antonino comes a comedy-thriller, short in duration, but with madness as inescapable as the echoes of a long-abandoned swamp. Madness shows up when you're born, when you die, and, in Marvin Snicks's case, everywhere in between. Haunted by an incessant croaking coming from the woods around his home, Marvin finds himself being pulled deeper and deeper into the jaws of insanity, as if by a gigantic, sticky tongue. The heinous croaking erodes his sanity day after day, driving him to an obsession that affects every facet of his life. Even the company therapist, with her five-year junior college degree, seems to be pushing Marvin deeper and deeper into the inescapable mire of feverish delusion. In the end, it's man against beast in a twisted, final showdown.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad (Beelzebub Classics) 4.0 Stars (2,182 Reviews)    Price verified 9 minutes ago

The reaches opened before us and closed behind, as if the forest had stepped leisurely across the water to bar the way for our return. We penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness. As the peak of European Imperialism, steamboat captain Charles Marlow travels deep into the African Congo on his way to relieve the elusive Mr Kurtz, an ivory trader renowned for his fearsome reputation. On his journey into the unknown Marlow takes a terrifying trip into his own subconscious, overwhelmed by his menacing, perilous and horrifying surroundings. The landscape and the people he meets force him to reflect on human nature and society, and in turn Conrad writes revealingly about hypocrisy, morality and the dangers of imperialism. "Heart of Darkness" is an eminent instance of the literary evocation of evil, and we can see how it might be regarded as a representation of the concept of original sin in fresh and secular terms. -- T. S. Eliot The heavy hypnotic style [of "Heart of Darkness"] falls around me again, and I am aware of the poverty of my own. -- Graham Greene One of my favorite books. -- William Faulkner Conrad endeavored to create a great, massive, multiphase symbol that would render his total vision of the world, his sense of individual destiny, his sense of man's place in nature, his sense of history and society. -- Robert Penn Warren

The Innocent (Las Casas Book 1) by Heather Shaw 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 6 hours ago

It's 1982, and a group of locals and ex-pats gather in southern Mexico for a little cuchi-cuchi. Someone is watching, though. Someone knows that the party is just an excuse... but for what? Murder? Or something even worse. During the 1980s, Pablo Escobar, the Colombian king of cocaine trafficking, noticed he was losing too much product to upscaled D.E.A. efforts in southern Florida. A decision was made to look for alternate routes, the simplest solution being to avoid the Caribbean and move shipping to the Pacific. Cocaine would be trafficked directly to the southern Mexican shoreline where couriers could be hired to transport the drugs to the U.S. At first, the couriers were paid in cash, but by the end of the 80s, payment in kind was standard operating procedure. Couriers generally received 35-50% of the product they transported. This change in payment procedure occurred simultaneously with Escobar's empire crumbling under combined D.E.A., Columbian and Chilean crackdowns. By the early 1990s, Mexican couriers were becoming suppliers in their own right. What started as a limited partnership turned into a full-scale, wholesale operation, currently affecting two-thirds of all Mexican municipalities. The astounding success of Mexican trafficking is partly because of the endemic corruption of political and legal entities, but poverty is also greatly to blame. Without paths to education and good jobs, the poor do what they must to provide for themselves and their families. Gangs and criminal activity are the usual signs of systemic failure to include the underclass in government. In 2013, the toll from the drug war (2006-2013) was more than 120,000 deaths. These deaths do not include the 27,000 people reported as missing.

Inconceivable Effects: Ethics through Twentieth-Century German Literature, Thought, and Film (Signale: Modern German Letters, Cultures, and Thought) by Martin Blumenthal-Barby (Cornell University Press and Cornell University Library) Price verified 12 hours ago

In Inconceivable Effects, Martin Blumenthal-Barby reads theoretical, literary and cinematic works that appear noteworthy for the ethical questions they raise. Via critical analysis of writers and filmmakers whose projects have changed our ways of viewing the modern world -- including Hannah Arendt, Franz Kafka, Walter Benjamin, the directors of Germany in Autumn, and Heiner Müller -- these essays furnish a cultural base for contemporary discussions of totalitarian domination, lying and politics, the relation between law and body, the relation between law and justice, the question of violence, and our ways of conceptualizing "the human." A consideration of ethics is central to the book, but ethics in a general, philosophical sense is not the primary subject here; instead, Blumenthal-Barby suggests that whatever understanding of the ethical one has is always contingent upon a particular mode of presentation (Darstellung), on particular aesthetic qualities and features of media. Whatever there is to be said about ethics, it is always bound to certain forms of saying, certain ways of telling, certain modes of narration. That modes of presentation differ across genres and media goes without saying; that such differences are intimately linked with the question of the ethical emerges with heightened urgency in this book.

Persuasion by Jane Austen (Pandora's Box Classics) 4.2 Stars (16 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

First published in 1818, Persuasion was Jane Austen's last work. Its mellow character and autumnal tone have long made it a favorite with Austen readers. Set in Somersetshire and Bath, the novel revolves around the lives and love affair of Sir Walter Elliot, his daughters Elizabeth, Anne, and Mary, and various in-laws, friends, suitors, and other characters, In Anne Elliot, the author created perhaps her sweetest, most appealing heroine. At the center of the novel is Anne's thwarted romance with Captain Frederick Wentworth, a navy man Anne met and fell in love with when she was 19. At the time, Wentworth was deemed an unsuitable match and Anne was forced to break off the relationship. Eight years later, however, they meet again. By this time Captain Wentworth has made his fortune in the navy and is an attractive "catch." However, Anne is now uncertain about his feelings for her. But after various twists and turns of fortune, the novel ends on a happy note. In Persuasion, as in such novels as Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma, Austen limned the plight of young women who could escape the constraints of family life only by marrying, and suggest the foolishness of women who believed they were free and not dependent on the financial and social resources of men. At the same time, Persuasion offers an ironic and subtle paean to the true love that enables one woman to rise above straitened economic circumstances and the stifling social conventions that restricted women to narrowly circumscribed lives in the common sitting room. Sure to appeal to admirers of Jane Austen, Persuasion will delight any reader with its finely drawn characters, gentle satire, and charming re-creation of the genteel world of the 19th-century English countryside. Anne Elliot must have been Jane Austen herself, speaking for the last time. There is something so true, so womanly about her, that it is impossible not to love her. She is the bright-eyed heroine of the earlier novels ...
