This classic vampire story has inspired generations of authors, from Bram Stoker to Charlaine Harris. A young English gentleman of means, Aubrey is immediately intrigued by Lord Ruthven, the mysterious newcomer among society's elite. His unknown origin and curious behavior tantalizes Aubrey's imagination. But the young man soon discovers a sinister character hidden behind his new friend's glamorous facade. When the two are set upon by bandits while traveling together in Europe, Ruthven is fatally injured. But when Ruthven resurfaces in London -- making overtures toward Aubrey's sister -- Aubrey realizes this immortal fiend is a vampyre. John William Polidori's The Vampyre is both a classic tale of gothic horror and the progenitor of the modern romantic vampire myth that has been fodder for artists ranging from Anne Rice to Alan Ball to Francis Ford Coppola. Originally published in 1819, many decades before Bram Stoker's Dracula, and misattributed to Polidori's friend Lord Byron, The Vampyre has kept readers up at night for nearly two hundred years. HACKAMORE REIN A Vampire from Spain: Rodrigo García Olza: RODRIGO GARCÍA OLZA NOVEL SERIES Part 1 (Book 1) by DG Farnsworth 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 32 minutes ago

Normally when you hear hoofbeats you think about horses. Maybe sometimes you should think about zebras. Vampires may be scary, but for some people they aren't half as frightening as falling in love. A vampire will intentionally pretend to be anything you want to believe it is for the single motive of draining life force energy. In the media the vampire is used to communicate the message of a feeling of mortal alienation from God, and a wish to conquer that alienation. Often the vampire in literature pushes the reader and main character on a spiritual journey with both religious and psychological elements to aid in their comprehension of the value of their existence. A vampire may convey isolation but has a strong religious or spiritual quality representing the transcendental agent through which individuals and societies may confront questions about their innate goodness or evilness -- a belief in God, and the possibility of the afterlife. But for Rodrigo García Olza and Triston Fallonside, it's all about horses, Jim Beam, Depeche Mode, and enjoying life to the fullest...

AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Where did your interest in ghost stories come from? When I was young and living in Poland, I lived next door to an old cemetery. It had been a Jewish Cemetery before World War II, and had been gated since 1945. No one had been inside in all those years, my child brain imagined. Our apartment was on the eleventh floor and I could see through the dense trees down to the half buried tombstones. I convinced myself I had seen several ghosts wandering there at night. My fascination with all things supernatural grew from there. Is that the reason history plays such an important part in this series as well? Yes, absolutely. The ghosts of World War II were everywhere in Poland. You couldn't escape that dark history. I've had a life-long fascination with that time period especially since the tendrils of the horrors still penetrate our modern times. Los Angeles also features prominently in ...

Jason Teufel by Christopher Kilgore (Teufel Inc.) 3.7 Stars (13 Reviews)    Price verified 32 minutes ago

Jason Teufel is haunted by dreams of an ancient battlefield covered with fire and smoke, monstrous creatures fighting legions of angels, and hidden gems that glow with power. Of these nightmares, it is the black hall that scares him the most. Cold and dark, he is dragged through a long hallway night after night, the still breath of death bearing ever down on him. When a terrifying vampire by the name of Moragan, kidnaps Jason in the hopes of resurrecting a terrible evil, he is forced to confront the horrors of his mind. Hunted by angels and demons alike, the once cut and dry biblical fiction becomes so much hazier then it had once seemed. Evil fights evil and good seems suspiciously absent from either side. With nothing as it should be, Jason must traverse the bowls of the earth, each step unlocking a new clue to the reason behind the war between Heaven and Hell. As the dreams become clearer, Jason becomes colder. Perhaps a "gift" from Moragan or perhaps something that has always been there, the new darkness within begins to change him. Now there is a choice that must be made, with the truth laid bare at his feet, will he cling to the old ideas of history or will he resist the powers that be...

Flatlined: Science Fiction/Mystery/Suspense by John Meany 3.8 Stars (57 Reviews)    Price verified 32 minutes ago

Before losing control of the car I heard Annie yell, "No! No way! No! Luke! Luke! Turn the wheel back! Turn the wheel back!" The car skidded on the wet pavement, fishtailed. Then we crashed into the tree. Boom! All thoughts stopped. The medics rushed me to the trauma center. The next thing I remember I was suddenly floating above my body, I heard the cardiac monitor flat line, indicating that either my heart had just stopped or that I had died. I wasn't frightened though. No. In fact, I felt fine. I experienced a tremendous sense of calm, well-being and painlessness. My body might have been in trouble, but not me. As I watched the operating procedure from the ceiling, aware that I no longer had any attachment to my physical self, none whatsoever, I realized I had become a mist, a vapor, a subatomic particle, something. I hovered in the air, near the ultraviolet lights like a crumb on the back of a moth. I was still in tune with my senses, actually, I was more in tune with them than I had ever been; my senses were heightened. Among the handful of surgeons and assistants, all of whom were dressed in green gowns and caps, there seemed to be a lot agitation. The medical team worked on my injured body in a decidedly critical manner. The fact that I had just flat lined had caused a great deal of confusion. Extraordinarily, the next thing I became aware of was two ghostly beings, which were human-like in that these phantasmagoric beings were shaped like people. Based on the mold of their bodies I could distinguish that one of the beings was male, the other was a female. These entities were floating in the air with me, hovering near the ceiling. However, they made no distinguishable sound; all I could hear was the surgeons down below talking among one another.

One night while high on hallucinogenic mushrooms and PCP Terrence seeks his cyberbullies out. Once he locates them, he murders all three of his former friends in a barbaric manner with a hatchet. Or did the mysterious Dark Man, who might or might not exist, put the hatchet in his hand?" This is what Terrence's family longs to find out, as well as the entire country. A Pumpkins' Halloween: A Novella by Mark Kasniak 3.9 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified 10 minutes ago

A Pumpkins' Halloween is a wonderful tale that embodies all the right attributes that sum up the spirit of the holiday of Halloween. Ghosts, zombies, vampires, maniacs, witches, and talking jack-o'-lanterns all take turns playing different roles in this multi-storied novella. A Pumpkins' Halloween brings to you everything you remember that was fun about Halloween along with a good dose of dark humor, while at the same time scaring and sickening you with its real-life tales of depravity. A Pumpkins' Halloween follows the storytelling of five jack-o'-lanterns as they come to life on Halloween evening. As the jack-o'-lanterns banter back and forth while giving each other grief, they find themselves forced to look out on the street because, after all, they're stationary, they're pumpkins. As Halloween progresses, each jack-o'-lantern takes turns telling a story in celebration of the holiday and one will ultimately be judged the winner at night's end. However, there is a stipulation. Each story has to be about the trick-or-treaters that the jack-o'-lanterns watch passing them by as they go about in search of candy. Also, each story gets to be picked by one of the other jack-o'-lanterns for added difficulty. The tales the jack-o'-lanterns tell focus on such taboo subjects as a father who is not very good at being one, a little boy who likes to play with matches, a woman who doesn't enjoy the company of children, not even her own, and a psycho killer who likes to target trick-or-treaters for his murderous games. [Warning: A Pumpkins' Halloween is NOT a children's story!!! It contains adult situations and some strong language.]

Then another one erupted into a mess of blood and guts. "Get in your car!" Charlene heard a voice shout. Charlene glanced around but could not find the source of the voice. "Get in your car, you damn fool!" Up. The voice was coming from somewhere above her. Charlene glanced up the rocky cliff wall that lined the road. She saw the glint of a rifle, and then she saw the man holding it. He put the gun to his eye and fired. Charlene started as she felt the bullet whizzing past her head and heard it whistle past her ear. Then she heard a very loud splat and she spun to see a dung beetle flopping on the ground only a few feet away from her. She shoved the back door shut and scrambled back into the front seat, pulling the door closed behind her. A beetle slammed into the driver's side window with incredible force just as Charlene closed the door. The window cracked, but did not shatter. Charlene looked up to see another beetle flying towards the car. It folded its long wings beneath its shell and dive-bombed straight for the glass, picking up speed as it descended. It splattered against the glass. Another dung beetle crashed into the window. The cracks in the window widened. More gunfire rang out, shot after shot echoing in the narrow canyon. Charlene sat quietly in the car, forcing herself to stay calm, not knowing where to go, or what to do. She adjusted her glasses and tried not to scream. Step Into Fear! Look for Land of ...
