Nine Years, Three weeks and Three days: A story of Love, Life, Laughter, and Loss by K.L. Dale 5.0 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified 3 minutes ago

I didn't know what I was writing when I started. It was just a way for me to get things off my chest, out of my head; losing John affected me in ways I hadn't considered. Writing 'Nine Years' helped me to realise, and appreciate, things I hadn't previously acknowledged as important, or relevant. I never planned on it becoming four parts, it just happened. There were moments when I had to stop writing so I could cry, laugh, think, breathe, let whatever revelation I had had, to sink in. We enjoyed lots of good times over our nine years together, too many to talk about. I have included some of my favourites. We had a good life with lots of laughter, it wasn't all doom and gloom.I wasn't sure if I would let people read what I was writing at the beginning; it is deeply personal. I've pretty much laid myself, and my life with John, bare for the world to pass judgement on. I haven't sugar coated anything, I have been blunt in some of my wording, that's just the way I am. This isn't about justifying my grief, I don't need to do that; I refuse to do that. Grief needs no justification. I would like to think that reading 'Nine Years' will provide an insight into the reality of losing someone you love. To anyone who reads 'Nine Years' who has suffered a loss then I hope you find some kind reassurance that you are not alone in the feelings, thoughts, emotions you have had, or are still experiencing. It is shit, life is very unfair, but we are still standing. I don't claim to be an expert, I don't have the answers, I do a story to share.

The Dutch East India Company: A Captivating Guide to the First True Multinational Corporation and Its Impact on the Dutch War of Independence from ... by Captivating History 4.2 Stars (33 Reviews)    Price verified 24 minutes ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Dutch East India Company, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! Huge international companies and corporations are a normal part of our everyday lives today. For most, their unimaginable wealth and power, which are rivaling even some of the smaller countries of the world, is something we take for granted. And we see them as the living embodiment of the capitalist system, regardless if we take it as a good or a bad omen. However, this wasn't always the case. For the majority of history, it was the kings and emperors who wielded the most influence, commanded the largest armies, and had the largest treasures. And all of them would laugh at the idea of some merchants managing to not only catch up to their supremacy and riches but even surpass them. Yet they did. Probably the best example of that kind of success were the traders of the Dutch East India Company of the 16th century. This company singlehandedly reformed the way businesses functioned, creating the foundation of our modern capitalist world, with all of its strengths and weaknesses. And through its international trade, this corporation brought our world one step closer to the colonialism of the 19th century and the globalization of the 20th century. It even managed to transform itself from a group of merchants to an empire in its own right. By the time of its disbandment in the late 18th century, the world was irreversibly changed. In The Dutch East India Company: A Captivating Guide to the First True Multinational Corporation and Its Impact on the Dutch War of Independence from Spain, you will discover topics such as • Birth of a Corporation • The Company on the Rise • Fall of the Giant • Structure and Organization of the VOC • The Good, the Bad, and the VOC • And much, much more! Jack London on Adventure: Words of Wisdom from an Expert Adventurer by Jack London (Skyhorse) 1.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

Jack London was a writer, but more than that, he was an adventurer who wrote about his adventures. Growing up working class in San Francisco, London diligently scrounged out a life riding trains, pirating oysters, working on a sealing ship, and working at a cannery, all the while using his free time to hole up in libraries reading novels and travel books. A harrowing voyage aboard a sealing ship, where he and the crew were almost killed by a typhoon, convinced him to start writing stories. After a brief time on the east coast and a stint in the Yukon mining for gold, London returned to California. He published his stories in the Overland Monthly, which prompted him to become more disciplined in his writing. He published numerous novels over the years, including The Call of the Wild, a story about a dog who becomes a sled dog in the Yukon, The People of the Abyss, which heavily critiqued capitalism, and John Barleycorn, a memoiristic novel that detailed his struggles with alcoholism. With quotes from the array of Jack London's writings, readers will get a sense of his life as well as a keen yearning for undertaking their own adventures.

The Mongol Invasions: A Captivating Guide to the Mongol Invasions and Conquests along with the Life of Genghis Khan by Captivating History 4.8 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 33 minutes ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Mongol Invasions, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! Two captivating manuscripts in one book: • The Mongol Conquests: A Captivating Guide to the Invasions and Conquests Initiated by Genghis Khan That Created the Vast Mongol Empire • Genghis Khan: A Captivating Guide to the Founder of the Mongol Empire and His Conquests Which Resulted in the Largest Contiguous Empire in History The Mongols were known to be both merciful as well as tolerant. Moreover, their conquests weren't aimed against civilized life; in fact, they helped connect numerous cultures and facilitated the spread of ideas and knowledge across the continent. Of course, the Mongols themselves were not uncultured brutes, as they had their own civilization, society, and traditions. With all that being said, this does not mean they were innocent for all the destruction they caused. Instead, it is implied that the Mongols weren't like fire, causing annihilation wherever they passed. They were more like water, capable of causing floods and carving mountains while at the same time creating fertile soil and giving life. Like many other topics in history, the Mongol story has more than one side, and this book will try to present as many as possible. It will explore both the bloody history of Genghis Khan and his conquests while showing that he and his fellow Mongols were capable of much more than that. Diving deep inside their culture and society, we'll cast off their barbaric image. They will be exposed for what they actually were, mere humans like any other on this Earth. Hopefully, by the end of this guide of the Mongol conquests, you will get a better understanding of not only the history of the Mongols but of all of humankind as well. Some of the topics covered in part 1 of this book include: • Origin of the Mongols • Rise of Genghis Khan and the Unification of the Steppes • The Mongol Conquest of the East • Genghis ...

Building the Wall: The Play and Commentary by Robert Schenkkan (Arcade) 4.2 Stars (10 Reviews)    Price verified 39 minutes ago

In the tradition of Hamilton and Angels in America, a powerful, politically charged, dystopian drama that couldn't be more timely. Written in a "white-hot fury" on the eve of the 2016 election, the stunning new play by Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning dramatist Robert Schenkkan is creating a nationwide sensation. Bypassing the usual development path for plays, it has been signed up to open in five theaters across America in a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere, starting in Los Angeles (March) and Denver (April) and continuing in the Washington, DC, area, Tucson, and Miami, with more productions to follow, including in Santa Fe and New York City. Building the Wall lays out in a harrowing drama the consequences of Donald Trump's anti-immigration campaign rhetoric turned into federal policy. Two years from now, that policy has resulted in the mass round-up of millions of illegal aliens, with their incarceration overflowing into private prisons and camps reminiscent of another century. The former warden for one facility is awaiting sentencing for what happened under his watch. In a riveting interview with a historian who has come seeking the truth, he gradually reveals how the unthinkable became the inevitable, and the faceless illegals under his charge became the face of tragedy. The play is accompanied by commentary from three prominent scholars: on the real purpose of the border wall, our dark nativist history of restricting immigration, and the tradition of political protest in art.

The Black Death: A Captivating Guide to the Deadliest Pandemic in Medieval Europe and Human History by Captivating History 3.9 Stars (43 Reviews)    Price verified 39 minutes ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of The Black Death, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! The Black Death was the first recorded pandemic in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. All across the continent, people learned just how gruesome and horrific disease could be as the plague crossed the boundaries of countries and the lines established by society, killing everyone equally. It showed that no one -- not even archbishops and kings -- were immune from its grasp. The ferocity with which the plague swept across the continent, even reaching the shores of England, demonstrated how unprepared they were for something on such a large scale. It was the first time that a major disease would strike the continent after the fall of the Roman Empire, but it would not be the last. Over the next few centuries, the bubonic plague would return several times. Although it was incredibly deadly, it never again had the same catastrophic effect on the European population. People began to study it from a scientific perspective instead of the same superstitious angle or religious fatalism, making it possible to understand exactly what was causing the deaths. Today, those in the medical profession can easily treat the bubonic plague if they realize what it is early enough. With examples of the illness occurring in many nations during the last decade, including the US, the Black Death is not gone, but it is no longer the death sentence that it once was. In The Black Death: A Captivating Guide to the Deadliest Pandemic in Medieval Europe and Human History, you will discover topics such as • The First Pandemics • The Black Death • The Unlikely Use of the Black Death • Rumors and Arrival • Perceptions Vs. The Reality • The Ultimate Equalizer • Stealing the Future - Princess Joan • Decline of the Catholic Church and the Rise of Mysticism • Art of the Black Death • The First Quarantine and Successful Containment • Beyond ...

The Middle Ages: A Captivating Guide to the History of Europe, Starting from the Fall of the Western Roman Empire Through the Black Death to the ... by Captivating History 3.9 Stars (20 Reviews)    Price verified 58 minutes ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Middle Ages, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! One of the least understood periods of European history occurred between the 6th century and the 14th or 15th century (depending on which historian you ask). Commonly called the Middle Ages, this was a time period of extreme change for Europe, beginning with the fall of the Western Roman Empire. To a continent that had seen a drastic shift in the power structure, the world seemed to be particularly harsh. Rome had been a major player across Europe for well over a millennium. Then it was gone. This is also a time period that still inspires art, literature, and philosophy today. There were men who lived during the Middle Ages who are still quoted and revered today, such as Saint Thomas Aquinas. They were almost always men of the cloth (religious men), but not always. People still enjoy the works of Geoffrey Chaucer, a famous writer who was also a merchant. The architecture of this time has also been used and reused for many centuries as well. The cathedrals and castles built during the Middle Ages still remain while younger structures have long since crumbled. Perhaps the most famous architecture from the time though is known as the Gothic style. The look and feel of the Gothic style have inspired many generations, including the Romantics of the 1800s and the horror/mystery genre that is still so popular today. However, it was the birth of universities that reflects the thinking of the time. Prior to the Middle Ages, there was no higher education. Many of the institutions and ideas that the men of the Renaissance would explore began during the Middle Ages. It was a time when Europe healed from the fall of one superpower and transitioned into something that more closely resembled the map of Europe today. It would undergo many more changes in the years following the Middle Ages, but nations began to find their identities without their Roman ...

2020: A Novel by Kenneth Steven (Arcade) 3.5 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

In the tradition of 1984 and It Can't Happen Here, 2020 is a timely dystopian novel about a country divided, a terrorist attack, and an populist leader who promises he alone is the solution. In 2020, Britain is at a breaking point. Years of economic turmoil, bitter debates over immigration, anger at the political elites, and fears about the future have created a maelstrom, a dis-United Kingdom, with citizens tempted to find easy answers in demagoguery and isolationism. The country is a bomb waiting to explode. Then it does. A major terrorist attack targets a sleeper train traveling between Edinburgh and London, leaving a staggering number of dead and wounded. Investigators soon identify the culprits as a radicalized group of young British Muslims. Horrific images from the attack and speculation by the media fan worries about further terrorist acts and the danger of an enemy within. In the aftermath, two far right organizations join to create a new radical group called White Rose, promising to stand up for English values. An unproven leader vows thathe can fix the nation. As the nightmare unfolds, a myriad of voices—from across the social and political spectrum—offer wildly differing perspectives on the chaotic events... and unexpectedly reveal modern Britain's soul with 20/20 acuity. Thoughtful, compassionate, and provocative, Kenneth Steven's 2020 is a parable for our times.

Alexander Hamilton: A Captivating Guide to an American Founding Father Who Wrote the Majority of The Federalist Papers by Captivating History 3.9 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating life of Alexander Hamilton, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! Alexander Hamilton, unlike many of the other Founding Fathers of the United States, was born outside of wedlock and was an orphan at the age of thirteen after his mother died. He was thrown into the world, depending on the charity of friends and neighbors. That perhaps is one of the reasons why Alexander Hamilton was fiscally sensitive and always anxious about funding and finance, not only for himself but for the new nation of the United States, where he emigrated when he was in his late teens. It is no wonder then that he became the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States and that he even saved banks from financial collapse. Hamilton had a brilliant mind. Although the law was his calling, he was blessed with charisma that could persuade even the stoniest of hearts. As a prolific writer, he never shied from presenting his legal (and personal) opinions regarding the political issues of the day. In Alexander Hamilton: A Captivating Guide to an American Founding Father Who Wrote the Majority of The Federalist Papers, you will discover topics such as • From Nevis to Boston • From Pen to Sword • Onset of Hamilton's Political Career • Economy and the First National Bank • The Time the Troubles Start • Empowerment of Political Parties • The Bitterly Fought Elections • Bottom of the Curve • And much, much more! Comprised of fifty states, this huge nation is filled with diverse topography, as well as a variety of flora and fauna. Not only that, but the USA is also home to a huge population with diverse ethnic backgrounds, including Hispanic, African American, Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Polish, and many more. A vast number of the white population are the descendants of the European colonists and settlers who ultimately conquered the land, dominating the Native Americans who were the original inhabitants of the land. This was very similar to the way the British conquered the Indian subcontinent, except for the fact the British conquerors didn't make the Indian subcontinent their permanent home while the early American colonists shed sweat and blood to make the untamed American wilderness their new homeland. But, in order to do so, the Americans waged wars against the Native Americans who had roamed the lands for thousands of years, driving them away from their homes in a brutal and horrific manner. Part of the blame lay on the Native Americans as well since their retaliation on the newcomers trespassing their lands were often brutal and horrific. Some of ...

What were those glowing spots in the black cover of night? Just how far away was the moon? These and other questions hounded humanity through the millennia until, finally, relative economic stability allowed for a number of people to examine their world more closely. Slowly, knowledge and understanding accumulated generation by generation until the conditions were ideal enough for a revolution to occur in thinking, experimentation, worldview, and natural philosophy. It was the Scientific Revolution, the time period when Western theologians had more and better tools to measure and make sense of the things around them. With careful measurements, precise data collection, and an unwavering sense of curiosity, humankind stepped into the future. The truly magnificent feature of this time period, besides, of course, the scientific discoveries themselves, was the kinship between philosophers, scientists, and experimental hobbyists throughout Europe. Hundreds, if not thousands, of letters between great intellectuals such as Isaac Newton, Johannes Kepler, Robert Hooke, and Tycho Brahe have been preserved, demonstrating how these men (and a few women) worked in cooperation with one another in order to better their own research. The Spanish-American War: A Captivating Guide to the Armed Conflict Between the United States of America and Spain That Took Place after the U.S. ... by Captivating History 4.1 Stars (17 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Spanish-American War, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! The Spanish-American War really only lasted about ten weeks (the buildup and decision to go to war took longer than the war itself), but a peace treaty was not signed until December of 1898. This was an event that was the tipping point for the end of the Spanish Empire and the rise of the US as a formidable player on the world stage. Not all Americans were happy with the change, with famous Americans like Mark Twain speaking out about the US occupation of the lands that it was meant to save. This breach was seen as being as antithetical to American ideals as bowing to the English crown would have been seen during the American Revolution. Still, the isolationist's view of the country was no longer popular, and more Americans wished to play a larger part in the world. The ideology of the country was not entirely different than it had been, but it was moving more toward the superpower it eventually became by the end of World War II. America had finally taken strides to match the might and power of the other Western countries, and it was increasingly more difficult to ignore the events around the world once they had lands to protect so far from the mainland. In The Spanish-American War: A Captivating Guide to the Armed Conflict Between the United States of America and Spain That Took Place after the U.S. Intervened in the Cuban War of Independence, you will discover topics such as • Spain's Waning Influence • America - A Country Itching to Break out of Isolationism • Building Tensions • America's Sensationalized Sympathy with Cuba • Remember the Maine! - An Excuse for War • A Brief War with Huge Implications • Rough Riders - The Beginning of the Legend of Theodore Roosevelt • How the Smoked Yankees Ensured Roosevelt's Success • The Price of Peace • The Anti-Imperialist League • The Foraker Act of 1900 and ...

And this is for good reason. After its founding sometime in the 10th century BCE, Sparta soon rose to be one of the most powerful city-states in not only the Greek but the entire ancient world. Perhaps the most significant achievement in all of Spartan history, though, was their defeat of the Athenians in the Peloponnesian War. This conflict, which lasted roughly 30 years, put the two greatest Greek city-states of the time, Athens and Sparta, up against one another, and the result, a Spartan victory, helped to reshape the entire ancient world. Bears by the Numbers: A Complete Team History of the Chicago Bears by Uniform Number by Lew Freedman (Sports Publishing) 4.8 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

What do Al Campana, Frank Dempsey, Stan Wallace, Don Mullins, Gale Sayers, and Steve Trimble all have in common? They all wore number 40 for the Chicago Bears, even though more than four decades passed between the last time Campana last pulled on his jersey and the number was retired for Sayers in 1994 (along with 51 for Dick Butkus). Since the Chicago Bears first adopted uniform numbers in 1932, the team has handed out only 99 numbers to more than 1,000 players. That's a lot of overlap. It also makes for a lot of good stories. Bears by the Numbers tells those stories for every Bear since '32, from Red Grange to Pernell McPhee. This book lists the players alphabetically and by number; these biographies help trace the history of one of football's oldest and most beloved teams in a new way. The Corridor (Volume 2) by Vic Neal (Nice Cake Publishing LTD) Price verified 2 hours ago

The long-awaited sequel to The Corridor - a laugh-out-loud comedy set in Oxford University which follows the student lives of the next generation of Prime Ministers and world leaders. The Corridor is a documentary-style comedy which follows a group of Oxford students through their conversations, tweets, emails, video diaries and text messages. Unsurprisingly, the students are more interested in their bizarre clubs, secret dining societies and political schemes than attending lectures or writing essays. Based on the experiences of an Oxford student, The Corridor exposes the excesses of its students and shines a light on the ancient institution that has continued to excrete our most reprehensible politicians for hundreds of years. A must-read for anyone thinking of becoming a future Prime Minister.

The Battle of Thermopylae: A Captivating Guide to One of the Greatest Battles in Ancient History Between the Spartans and Persians by Captivating History (Newcos) 4.4 Stars (23 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Battle of Thermopylae, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! The Battle of Thermopylae is one of the most famous battles in human history. It featured two of the ancient world's most prominent cultures, the Achaemenid-led Persian Empire and the fragmented yet culturally advanced Greeks. It also included some of history's most famous leaders, such as the Persian king Xerxes and the Spartan king and military general Leonidas. This glorification is apt only because the battle was indeed an important moment in the much larger conflict known as the Greco-Persian Wars. However, the Greeks lost this battle. In fact, it was a slaughter. Had it not been for some good fortune as well as an advantage in terms of equipment and fighting techniques, the Battle of Thermopylae could have gone down in history as the beginning of the end for one of the world's great civilizations. That these soldiers were more willing to die than to surrender to the evil Persians is part of the reason why this battle has become so famous. It serves as a symbol of what people will do to protect their freedom and their homeland. Sure, much of our memory of the Battle of Thermopylae is glorified untruth, but no one can deny that the Greeks and the Persians, in late August or early September of 480 BCE, fought one of the most important battles in one of the most important wars of the ancient era. In The Battle of Thermopylae: A Captivating Guide to One of the Greatest Battles in Ancient History Between the Spartans and Persians, you will discover topics such as • Leading up to The Battle of Thermopylae • The Main Characters of the Battle of Thermopylae • Greece and Persia Prepare for Battle • The Battle of Thermopylae: Seven Days to Last the Test of Time • Meanwhile, at Artemisium • After the Battle of Thermopylae • The Greek and Persian Armies • And much, much more! The Cambridge Five: A Captivating Guide to the Russian Spies in Britain Who Passed Information to the Soviet Union During World War II by Captivating History 3.9 Stars (28 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Cambridge Five, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! During the poverty-stricken years of the Great Depression, when Britain's financial markets plummeted and the poor and wealthy alike doubted the economic systems in which they participated, the potential of one political ideal shone like no other: Communism. Young intellectuals from the country's very best schools discussed the premise of labor-value versus wealth-value, and a great many of them became card-carrying members of the Communist Party in Britain. It was exactly the kind of hunting ground the Soviet Union needed to recruit high-level agents to their cause. Over the course of the early 1930s, five students of Cambridge University were handpicked by Soviet agents and instructed to use their status as educated members of the British elite to serve the U.S.S.R. Anthony Blunt, Guy Burgess, Donald Maclean, Kim Philby, and John Cairncross accepted the offer and in doing so changed the course of WWII and the Cold War. Their actions were not discovered until the 1950s, long after the war was finished and the damage -- or achievements, depending which side you were on -- had already been done. In The Cambridge Five: A Captivating Guide to the Russian Spies in Britain Who Passed Information to the Soviet Union During World War II, you will discover topics such as • The Undeniable Attraction of Marxism • Students of Prestige • Anthony Blunt: Teacher, Lover, Recruiter • Burgess: A Mole Within the BBC • Maclean and the Spanish Civil War • World War II: Espionage Between Allies • Enigma, Bombe, and Colossus • Espionage and the Battle of Kursk • Project Venona • Allied Insurgents in Albania • The Downfall of the Cambridge Five • And much, much more! The Afsharid and Qajar Dynasty: A Captivating Guide to Two Iranian Dynasties Who Ruled Persia from 1736 to 1925 by Captivating History 4.4 Stars (12 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Afsharid and Qajar Dynasty, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! Most people have heard about the famous and mighty Persian Empire of old, be it the one ruled by the Achaemenid Dynasty which challenged the Greeks and ultimately fell to the might Alexander the Great or the later Persian Empire ruled by the Parthian and Sassanid Dynasties which fought against the Romans an the Byzantines before being conquered by the Arab tribes which brought the Islamic religion to the Iranian Plateau. However, after those glory days of the ancient era, the Persian story is relatively ignored, hidden in the dark corners of history. Because of this, most of us have no idea how the Persian Empire became the contemporary Iranian republic. This guide aims to fill this hole in the Persian story, taking a look at the modern history of Iran during which this crucial change occurred. Through retelling this part of the Iranian past, which was one of the hardest and most devastating eras for the people of Iran, this book will also try to portray the development of the Iranian culture and civilization, exploring its uniqueness and its evolution. On top of all that, it will try to depict the lives of the common population, those who remain silent and voiceless despite being the overwhelming majority. Combing through all these elements will provide an interesting insight into the Iranian past but also explain why this country has become so notorious and anti-Western in the last several decades. Hopefully, understanding the past will one day lead to the healing of this broken relationship and lead the entire world one step closer to universal peace. Of course, this isn't a task which can be achieved through one single guide, but it can be seen as a small step in the right direction, leading to a better comprehension of the Iranian civilization as a whole and its place on the world stage. In The Afsharid and Qajar Dynasty: A ...

The Hemlock Girl by C. L. Heckman 4.7 Stars (13 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Junior year was supposed to be calm. I was going to lay low and stay out of the limelight, exactly where I liked to be. My plans were right on track. I was getting straight A's, helping with the school play, and getting home way before curfew. Well, I was... until I met Jasper. I swear the earth stopped spinning that first time we made eye contact. His sky blues paralyzed my brain, and I had zero control left over the rest of my body. What was I doing? Jasper was too young, too immature, and too freaking beautiful. My biggest mistake was allowing him to get in the car with me after practice that night. It was too easy to lean in and smell his cologne, and way too easy to get swept up in the whole idea of us. Trying to protect myself from him, I put up walls - walls that he knocked down every single chance he got. He was getting to me and whether I liked it or not, he was going to eventually win. Finally giving in to temptation, I allowed myself to get swept off my feet and became part of his world. I never realized that to be part of it, I had to be part of them. At a bonfire on a beach the summer after my junior year my life changed forever... I became a Hemlock girl.

The author of "Moe Howard Died For Our Sins" returns with another collection of hilarious short stories. "Whether writing about the end of the world, terrorist swans, entering the afterlife or high school journalism, White entertains with clever asides, obvious (and some not-so-obvious) puns, and cultural and societal pokes. His stories combine satire, slapstick, innuendo, and outright silliness. All of it is punctuated with interesting, quirky characters." Seattle Post-Intelligencer "White has a wonderful talent for engaging the unexpected, and his quick turns are wild and fun." Book Review.com. "Some of his stories come across as being written in the classic style of Mark Twain and the British satirist Saki... Still others comes across with the raw, in-your-face humor worthy of Comedy Central." ReaderViews.com. The WOW Factor: How I Turned One Idea and My Unbridled Enthusiasm into a Golf Revolution by Barney Adams (Skyhorse) 4.5 Stars (10 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

The founder of Adams Golf and the inventor of Tight Lies, the most popular fairway wood of all time, tells his rags-to-riches story. In the early years of Adams Golf, entrepreneur Barney Adams labored in obscurity. He collected six patents for his golf products, manufacturing fine equipment but enjoying no sales. Everything changed for him and his company in 1996, though, when he invented the Tight Lies fairway wood. Working as a custom fitter, his customers repeatedly asked for a club they could play from "long iron" distance, from 180 to 220 yards to the green. Adams knew the technical secret was to lower the club's center of gravity. He did this by designing the traditional head shape upside down, which not only lowered the center of gravity, but also increased the hitting surface. The result was a club that was easier to hit, and suddenly Adams and his club, after years of diligent work, became overnight sensations. As lean as those early years of Adams Golf were, the amazing success of Tight Lies more than made up for them. Sales skyrocketed beyond Adams's wildest expectations, and earned Adams Golf two placements on the Inc. 500 Fastest Growing Small Companies list, an Industry Week Top 25 Award for Growing Manufacturing Companies, several golf industry awards, and led to the largest IPO in the history of the golf industry in 1998. This is Barney's unvarnished story of how he made this happen, and how you, too, can make your entrepreneurial dreams come true.

Punic Wars: A Captivating Guide to The Punic Wars and Hannibal Barca by Captivating History 4.4 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Punic Wars, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! Two captivating manuscripts in one book: • The Punic Wars: A Captivating Guide to the First, Second, and Third Punic Wars Between Rome and Carthage, Including the Rise and Fall of Hannibal Barca • Hannibal Barca: A Captivating Guide to the Carthaginian General Who Fought in the Second Punic War Between Carthage and Ancient Rome The Punic Wars between 264 BCE and 146 BCE were a series of wars fought between the armies of ancient Carthage and Rome. In the years before the battles broke out, Carthage had risen from a small port community to the Mediterranean region's richest and most powerful city. Carthage had a powerful navy, a mercenary army, and ample resources to act as an authority in trade and politics. As such, Carthage prohibited Roman trade in the Western Mediterranean through an agreement with what was then just a small city called Rome. Without an organized military, Rome had little choice but to abide by the treaty. As history shows, however, Rome didn't stay small and insignificant for long. As its size and power grew, so too did Rome's desire to fight back against its Carthaginian oppressors: so followed the three Punic Wars. At the start of the conflict, Carthage dominated the Mediterranean. By the end of the wars, Rome had not only conquered Carthage but become the strongest society in the Western Mediterranean. It was a formative period for the Roman Republic and one that would eventually lead Rome to form its own empire. Some of the topics covered in part 1 of this book include: • Never before told story of what the Punic Wars were all about, where it was fought, and the major events surrounding the historical war • Full account of the epic battles fought during the three wars that spanned over 118 years • The outcome of the many years of warfare between the two major powers, Carthage and Rome • And much, much ...
