The Ottoman Empire by Charles Horne (Endymion Press) Price verified 13 minutes ago

Constantinople, the Turkish capital, the mysterious, ancient, ever-flourishing city, sacred alike to Christian and Mahometan, stands in its wondrous beauty upon European shores; yet Turkey is an Asiatic State. Her story belongs to Asia, the world of dreamy fancy and lurid legend, not of sober fact and accurately dated history. Hence one can speak of Turkey only after the fashion of her own clime, repeating the poetic fantasies with which her writers have adorned her early days, enjoying the beauty and noting the symbolism of each new tale, but with not too deep a faith in its mathematical veracity. The story deals first with Ertoghrul, whose name means the right-hearted man; and the hero who succeeds him is Osman, the limb-breaker. The significant titles indicate the chief qualities for which the Turks take pride in their far ancestors. Those founders of the race were sturdy warriors and "right-hearted" men of honor. This is certainly not the general conception of the Turks, held by the peoples of the West; but if we are to appreciate or understand at all the marvellous rise of this fierce yet romantic race, we must begin by casting aside the false ideas which many of us have acquired through dwelling only on the evil side of the character of a fallen foe. Let us start on the basis of a few plain facts. Western ignorance and indeed indifference as regards things Asiatic, are so dense that we blunder over the very name of this people and of their land. To speak of the Turkish Empire at Constantinople is as mistaken as to speak of the Caucasian Empire at London. Turk is really a general name covering all the nations and tribes which once spread over northern Asia and most of Russia. The name, to a gentleman of Constantinople, suggests something of wildness and barbarism. His own nation is a special branch of the Turkish race, the one that has risen above all others in intellect, in civilization and fame. The members of this noteworthy people are called the Osmanli, ...

Amalgam of Paranormal Stories by James Huber Price verified 50 minutes ago

A romp through time, space, mind and computers. Time can be conquered, but are there controls that sit there to be tested? Could be. Space is not a constant, it is always changing, scenes, events weather, all have their own character. Some people have figured how to get past any rules. Would you try? Mind control has been discussed for centuries, but how about control by the mind? Can we make things move about with out minds? Can we make things work for us with only our minds? Remains to me see. The dawn of the age of computers is a far back in history idea, right? Wrong. Forty years ago no one had personal computers. Now people have wristwatches more powerful than the Apollo Space Program had. Cars always had a need for gas. Maybe no more. Technology is in position to make mankind their slaves. A few explorers can keep this from happening.

Tame the Spark (Mirrorside Book 0) by Jessica Lynch 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified one hour ago

It all begins with Hera & Zeus... Before Noelle ever falls into the Other, before Cassandra becomes the witch in the woods, a young Manhattan socialite meets a stubborn silver-haired stranger and discovers that the Fates won't be denied -- Elisabeth "The old ways are dying." That's how the man who's been following me around the city finally breaks his silence. The old ways are dying, and it's up to me to save them. Well, to be fair, it's up to the two of us. Because, thousands of years ago, we were both gods -- and we were married. He introduces himself as Zeus, king of the gods, and tells me that I'm not really Elisabeth Morgan. I'm Hera, and throughout countless lifetimes over the course of millennia, I've been his queen. Of course, I don't believe him. I'm convinced he's broken loose from an asylum. The first time he approaches, my betrothed warns the silver-haired man to keep away from me. With a smirk, he disappears, as if he knows we'll meet again. And we do because, after seeing him once, I can't stop myself from searching him out again. It's an addiction, a compulsion, a need that turns into a rage so fiery, I nearly burn up the world around me when I discover him with another woman. Because Hera is the jealous sort. Because I'm Hera. And he is Zeus, my wild, uncontrollable, philandering consort. He says the old ways are dying, and we have to return to the Other side. Will I go? I don't know. Can I tame him? Make him mine and mine alone like he never was? He says we're meant to be, but I'm not sure. Can I leave him? No. I can't. So I go. And I discover that there's a whole other realm out there, I'm a whole other person, and, with his help, it's up to Zeus and Hera to save both the worlds. Tame the Spark is a prequel novelette (~14k words) that is set directly before the first full-length Mirrorside book, Stalk the Moon.

Two Knights In London by Paul Boon 3.4 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

What happened to the Princes in the Tower? Was it a mixture of time and magic which transported them through history and legend? Here is one story of betrayal, fear, bravery, loyalty and love. It might be true, or it might be fantasy. Maybe only Edward and Richard know the answer. It might still seem like a dream to them... that first day after that night of flaming torches... Richard stared at the new world and then allowed his brother to come into focus. "Where are we?" he asked feebly, "What's happening? Where are we? Where is this place?" "I don't know," said Edward, truthfully. "I think we are alive but maybe bewitched." "Bewitched!" breathed Richard in horror. "In Hell?" "No! Not Hell. I won't believe that," said Edward. "We've done nothing to deserve Hell. That was a wizard. The purple mist! He did something. A spell or something." Richard collapsed, feeling more wretched than before. Edward held him. "Courage my brother. We live. We are surrounded by strangeness, but we are alive." "But what can we do?" asked Richard. "Where can we go? Who will be our champion?" This looked like the place where they had seen the fox. The knights felt nothing. There seemed to be no magic in this place. Maybe the magic only worked at night, or when the wizard was nearby. Ralph thought back to the moment when they had entered the purple mist. The wizard had vanished, they thought. What if he had just hidden behind the mist, somehow? If so, where did that leave them and the boys. Was there any way back?

Time and Patience (Secession Book 4) by James Huber Price verified one hour ago

Time and Patience is the fourth episode in this thrilling series about the breakaway Southwest Coalition and the bankrupt United States from which the Coalition had seceded. In this episode, we see the formal end of the old USA, as a military coup unseats the Magistrate tribunal which so recently had replaced the former "one President" form of government. Continuing from where Plebiscite ended, Time and Patience also sees us through a series of terrorist acts against both the remnant US and the Coalition. Working cooperatively to the extent possible, the two countries take decisive action on a global scale to permanently remove - or at least defang - some of the more serious threats, at home and abroad. Time and Patience is, like its predecessors, a well-thought-out and perfectly believable succession of events which one should expect in the world, as it has evolved in this series. It is well-balanced mélange of the expected and the unexpected. The often heroic actions of various military personnel in both countries is absolutely realistic. Sadly, the self-centered, deluded, misguided and just plain stupid actions of the anti-heroes in this story are also absolutely realistic.

The Ol-Kai people : A story from the land of the six peoples by Jesse Hutson 3.2 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

In 1966 a newly independent Guyana had successfully upended two hundred years of British government, thus leaving the country in the deep throes of political turmoil. The Ol-Kai people: A story from the land of the six peoples is author Jesse Hutson's powerful novel that reimagines those tumultuous times, as seen through the eyes of Billu Latchman, an East Indian teacher and newspaper editor who must navigate a new world thrown into abject disorder, as it strives to evolve from a slave plantation society to a modern state. Startling and raw, this evocative novel offers a rare vantage into an exotic land as it clashes with contemporary culture. At twenty-four years old, Billu Latchman is a young man swept up in perilous times. Having no parents, his Aunt Emily and his ailing grandmother are all that he can claim as family. What's more, the new independent republic under the rule of a recently appointed President does not bode well for Billu and his people. The regime is comprised of Afro-Guyanese, a people who have long fostered tensions with Billu's East Indian community, the largest group in this "land of six peoples." When, in his newspaper, Billu offends an important person in the new British Guiana, Billu finds he has no recourse but to go into hiding to save himself and his relatives, first taking up with Pastor Jim Jones and visiting the remote settlement of Jonestown near Venezuela. There Billu and his friend William gain an intimate understanding of the infamous Jonestown, its inhabitants, and the charismatic Pastor Jim Jones, with followers of the People's Temple describing their lives before and after they came to the settlement. Grappling with his homeland, Billu eventually seeks refuge in Copenhagen, where he lives with Auntie Madge and forges a new life, falling in love with a local woman named Eva. However, he finds himself ultimately drawn back to Guyana and the quest for the fabled city of El Dorado, leaving behind the life he built in Europe for ...

Cherry Lips (Cherry Fairy Tales Book 2) by Lacey Dearie (Rock Paper Spirit) 4.4 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

Cerise is not a witch. She's an apprentice herbalist whose father is a wannabe warlock and fairy godmother is a madame. But Cerise has a closely guarded secret - the cherry lip-stain she manufactures and sells to the richest and most powerful women in the land is a potent aphrodisiac that makes the wearer irresistible. Of course, with such power comes responsibility, something Cerise did not consider while she was testing each batch of the product on the men of her home town. Soon, word of the magical make-up reaches the childless Queen Merewald, and she becomes determined to uncover the secrets of the lip-stain herself and use them to seduce her ageing, impotent husband, King Palen. Her best chance is to send her feline brother-in-law, Blaxton, to befriend Cerise and spy on her. What the Queen didn't count on was her nephew falling for Cerise without the use of magic or her niece using their jester as bait to uncover the secrets before she did. Cherry Lips is a chick-lit fairytale about a medieval amateur cosmetologist, a nymphomaniac witch, a kinky jester, an unconventionally handsome prince, a wizard with magical healing powers, a castle made of sand and crystals, magical lip-stain that makes the wearer irresistible and cats. Lots and lots of cats. Cherry Lips is the first book in the Cherry Fairy Tales Trilogy and is followed by Bewitcher and Waiting For Magic.

Perhaps for a laugh, perhaps for a story to tell his lawyer friends back in Mississippi, Basil accompanies Olive to a women's emancipation rally, whereupon he falls irrevocably in love with a young suffragette, Miss Verena Tarrant, and sets about trying to rewrite her beliefs. The problem is that Olive has been grooming Miss Tarrant as her protégé. Will Basil reform the lovely young activist orator, or will Olive win the young woman's heart and mind? Often proclaimed James's funniest novel and regarded as his most successful political work, The Bostonians deals with love and friendship in the awkward landscape of shifting social roles, feminism in post-Civil War America, and a woman's place in this brave new world. Funny, astute, and merciless, The Bostonians is one of James's most successful portrayals of a world teetering between old values and the relentless march of social progress. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

One word changes everything. The all-powerful ruling authority, the Common, implants sensors into its citizens, sensors into the eyes and into the ears. They can see what you see and hear what you hear, and everything is monitored and recorded. One wrong word, or action, and you can lose your citizenship, which means death. This is the world that Alpha has survived in for thirteen years, and he's good at it. At the School, he's an instructor rank, the highest ranking, which means almost no mistakes, for years. But now everything is unraveling. The Common has set their sights on him, systematically testing him to determine his allegiances. And what's worse, they're bringing Theta into this, the only person in the world that he cares about, and they might even kill her to get to him. And the only way that this gets resolved, and the only way he can keep Theta safe, is if Alpha finds a way to escape the School. But how can you run from an enemy who can watch you at all times, an enemy who knows everything about you, when a single misspoken word can destroy you? A nonstop Dystopian novel, terrifyingly engrossing and imaginative.

The King's Story by H M Sealey 3.6 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Misha Heath has served the King since she was fourteen. In the years since she first learned the world was in the grip of a demonic kingdom that desires nothing but destruction, she has lost count of the battles fought, the injuries she has acquired, the people she has helped and the people she has lost. But in all that time, she was certain she knew the King. Yet the King who walked the earth as a man, healing the sick, raising the dead and setting the captives free, is the same King who flooded the world and who sent His people to war against the Moabites, the Amalekites and the Philistines as though those men, women and children didn't matter to Him at all. The same King who stood by while women and children were treated as spoils of battle. The same King who cared more for sexual immorality than genocide and slavery. At least, that was what she thought, until Misha begins to learn the King's story. A story that began at creation and is still being written, chapter by chapter. A story written in the King's own blood and the King's own tears, sometimes joyous, sometimes horrifying, sometimes ugly and sometimes beautiful. The King sees the beginning and the end, He is the reason the world turns on it's axis and His love for humanity is unsurpassed and all-consuming. His voice can be the roar of the waterfall or the whisper of a summer breeze. One day, Misha knows the King will return to Earth as a conquering lion and then there will be no more suffering, no more pain, no more abuse. The King will wipe every tear from the eyes of His people and death will be utterly defeated. Death though, has his own plans in the time still remaining. He doesn't want to be redundant. He doesn't want to be nothing. Death will do anything he can to destroy or delay the King's work on Earth, including twisting the King's story just enough to drive Misha away from the one for whom creation exists. But Misha is a writer, a writer whose peculiar abilities have cursed and blessed ...

In October 1973, the State of Israel was invaded by Egyptian and Syrian forces. Despite early losses, Israel managed to outfight its opponents. The brief and bloody Yom Kippur War stands as a unique chapter in modern military history. Fought primarily by tank units, the war became a story not only of battle strategy and tactics, but also one of human discipline, endurance and sacrifice. While many historians have chronicled the events of the Yom Kippur War, few have been seasoned by actual combat. Avigdor Kahalani, commander of a tank battalion on the Golan Heights during the Yom Kippur War, describes this experience in The Heights of Courage. Beginning with a description of the initial Syrian offensive, he recounts the personal endeavors of his men, their fears and their ambitions, as well as their emotional and physical hardships. His stark account traces the efforts of the Israel Armored Corps as they struggle to overcome extreme difficulties and setbacks. The author describes their ultimate penetration into enemy territory and their approach to within forty kilometers of Damascus.

After reaching the age of being able to join the war effort his journeys in life only had begun. He traveled everywhere with excuses to write. While on his adventures he would meet new women, who interested him and flirt with them unbounded even in front of his wives; most of who seemed to be used to all of it. He loved big game hunting and large fishing expeditions and to brag about his many catches and hunts. His bragging was so big that everyone knew he had to be lying. Hemingway predicted at a young age that he would commit suicide like his father. Suicide ran rampant in the Hemingway family. You will find in the book why the Hemingways all committed suicide. Inside you'll read about • Ernest Birth and Younger Years • Ernest, WWI and Pauline Pfeiffer • Stories of War • Ernest's Unconsummated Love Affair • Ernest's Challenges with Mental Issues Where • Ernest Finally Got to Rest And much more! When it came to his collection of six-toed cats, he was a bowl of jelly. He melted like butter and spoke softly and cuddled them like they were all royalty. His cats never had to want for anything. He had an extreme attachment to all his pets. Ernest's life did not go out large as he lived. It was quiet, in an area where no one would find his burial grounds for quite some time and for years the public had no idea that he had committed suicide. Killing himself at 61 seemed to have cut a brilliant man's life very short when he was beginning to become famous worldwide. Read on to see what you think.

A Nation of Ruins by Robert John Burke 3.5 Stars (19 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

It's 2098, and conservative America stands victorious. The Second American Revolution and the New Bill of Rights have swept away all traces of liberalism in the United States of America. Bearing arms is compulsory, illegal immigrants are hunted down without mercy, and the reborn nation stands astride the world like a Colossus. Only a few embittered old holdouts, like civil rights attorney and former left-wing activist William Fitzgerald, still remember it as the land of the free. When he reluctantly agrees to defend a close friend's son, the so-called Peace Vigilante, Fitz finds himself at the center of the trial of the century, where the most dangerous man in America is the one who won't carry a gun. Combining an impassioned defense of progressive ideals and liberal Christianity with a gripping near-future legal thriller, A Nation of Ruins presents a vision of a very different world, but one entirely too close to our own for comfort...

ANCIENT: Rise of Noah by Celdon Daniel (SAMARITAN Literary Federation) 3.7 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

A re-telling of the story of Noah with a unique focus on the psychology and emotion of the Great Flood. The story of Noah's Ark is well known. There are those who hold to it as uncorrupted truth; there are those who regard it as an uncorroborated fable -- but what cannot be denied is the reality that sometimes a man can be given a task that seems too much for him to bear, and that sometimes you can do nothing to prevent the loss of the world around you. This is the story of Noah, told in a way that you would never imagine or expect. It is the end of the world (the first time), and, as such, it does not fall short of that apocalyptic ambition. ANCIENT is a story about survival; it is a story about the human spirit. It is a paradox of wet and dry, of safety and doom. Beneath the surface, there is a moral of repentance and a message of hope. It's one thing to imagine what life was like inside the Ark -- but dare one imagine what it was like on the outside?
