The Rewards of Virtue by Tom Goss (Thomas C. Goss, Fedora Fiction Press, St. Louis, MO) 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 7 minutes ago

Larry Trotter is a middle-aged, unemployed loser until he is invited to dinner by a pair of eccentric neighbors who grill him on his past, and during which he passes out. He wakes to find that his world has not only been turned upside down, but also inside out and twisted up like a sweater left on the dryer too long. He is thrust into an adventure that soon embroils him in ancient history, a worldwide conspiracy, corporate intrigue, golf (but I already said corporate intrigue, didn't I?), an epic chess game, Martian invaders, saving the world, rock and roll, and even more terrifying, a steady girl friend. Yet, he still has time to cook for himself. How Trotter manages these, and other challenges is the plot of this absurd and comic fantasy lark. This novel contains profanity and mild sexual innuendo. Reader discretion is advised.

That Sleep of Death: The Ghostlord, Book Two by Robert John Burke Price verified 11 minutes ago

Bryan Mitchell still has a lot of problems. He's still obsessive-compulsive. He still lives in a parallel world where a biological weapon called the Germ transformed civilization. He's still a Ghostlord, a person marked as Contaminated by the Germ whose fears come to life as horrifying monsters. He's forced by the authoritarian Task Force to hunt down others like him. His home city of Boston has been wracked with civil unrest ever since Bryan succeeded in his first Task Force mission and turned a rogue Ghostlord called the Herald into a martyr. Some want him dead, all wish to control his power, and Bryan doesn't even know which side he's on. Oh, and now he has friends, which sounds like a good thing, but for Bryan they introduce a thousand new worries. When a band of mercenaries attacks Bryan and his girlfriend Jennifer Warfield and drops hints about the murder of someone close to their friend Ruth, Bryan's team is drawn into a web of double-dealing and manipulation encompassing a successor to the Herald, a telepathic enemy with a terrifying plan, their own scheming employers, and deadly secrets within their ranks. There's also a Christmas party. Bryan had better stock up on hand sanitizer. In the world of a Ghostlord, thoughts can kill, enemies return from the dead, and safety is an illusion. The more Bryan tries to set things right, the further he travels down the path of using his power in ways that could make him the most dangerous threat of all...

The Life of Umberto Cavallo and Other Matters: a novel by Joel Augee (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform) 4.1 Stars (10 Reviews)    Price verified 12 minutes ago

*Note: First Edition revised April 2018. The "Life of Umberto Cavallo and Other Matters" is the story of an immigrant's struggles. It begins in northern Italy in 1885, where Berto, as a small boy, secretly visits his demented grandfather, and upon hearing the old man's far-fetched anxieties, must decide whether to protect him from his fears. In a world teeming with poverty, desperation and sacrifice, the story tumbles across oceans and lives. It crosses paths with murderous gauchos and lonely farmers, and culminates in one man's attempt to decipher a destructive individualism boring through the family tree, and answer the question: what is the psychological cost of emigration (and which generation shall pay it)? At times comedic and tragic, and spanning not only four continents and five generations, but the width of the human heart in conflict with itself, this novel pulls you toward the finish with an unrelenting hold. An earlier version of "The Life of Umberto Cavallo and Other Matters" was a Finalist in the Santa Fe Writers Project fiction contest (2010). This novel is both literary and historical. It is a family saga and a geographic journey. Fans of Jonathan Franzen's "The Corrections" and Elsa Morante's "History: a Novel," as well as those of classic authors like Pat Conroy, Irene Nemirovsky, John Steinbeck, and Pacific Northwest writer Ivan Doig, may appreciate this novel.

The Illusion of Free Will (Book of Lists) by I. M. Probulos 4.2 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

With hundreds of examples I. M Probulos explores the illusion of free will and explains in succinct and clear terms the reason for his position. As part of the Book of Lists series, this book includes over 30 lists, but it much more than that. It has a very clear narrative and perspective and its goal is to define exactly what the illusion of free will means and the issues involved. This book has been thoroughly researched and includes findings from psychology, genetics, neurobiology, quantum physics, and numerous other sources to back up the author's deterministic view of the universe. The first point is that making a choice and having free will are two, entirely separate issues; second, personal responsibility and consequences are also separate from free will. The book explores numerous approaches to the concept of free will and includes numerous scenarios and examples of deterministic behavior. The author lists positive determinist behaviors, and finally, there are numerous additional resources including books, debates, internet articles, and even some competing information. The author posits the concept that we can be positive causal ramjets. The concept of a ramjet is simple-since it operates by air intake, the faster it goes, the more oxygen it takes in, and the faster it goes. So the deterministic argument against "if everything is determined, why do anything?" or "if I am just a robot then why not just go home and sit on the couch?" is that, for one, nothing changes about choices or activity in a causal world, and two, we want to cascade as many positive and beneficial causal events as possible and minimize the negative. When the Jonquils Bloom Again, 5th Edition by J G Knox (LTL Publishing) Price verified one hour ago

A love story, several love stories, dreams of him, her husband to be, she dreams. A young lady in the 1940s with irritable bowel syndrome wanting kissed, needs enemas. She gets used to them. Gentle enemas ease her discomfort, make her feel good, are pleasant, desirable. Something not talked about in polite society, something she wants to talk about, share how good she feels, share her feelings with the boy she loves. Relaxed, she opens-up about her most hidden feelings under a big oak in the park during her first picnic with her boyfriend in high school. The next day she is little-miss-red-ears, when he comes to see her. She is in bed with a cold and is having enemas as part of her treatment, and he knows! The book is a novel, a saga, a love story of two sisters, their family and their lovers. They suffer the racial prejudice and experiences of 1940s. There is a lynching of a good man, murders of bad men, a World War II hero, a scientist with Ashberger's syndrome, and family---loving family. When the Jonquils Bloom Again is set in South Carolina, a college town; and Pennsylvania, a mill town, with a mother who teaches Sunday school and one father who is an Polish Gypsy, another who is a lead man in the plant, and another who is a Chiropractor---and villains much higher placed in society and members of the Klan. Slices-of-life before and after both World Wars. The use of corporal correction during that period is covered, both the good and bad. Done right pain can teach. Done wrong it can harm---it's a simple as most people think---and complicated enough to require some understanding of neurology and physiology to fully understand. The book is moral, two swear words in the entire book, enemas clinically given by nurses, an aunt, a mother and a husband. Only one fully sexual scene is a wedding night, two virgins teaching each other, one having spent weeks reading up on what he is supposed to do, the other having been taught to do whatever he tells her to do once ...

Loneliness In Different Stages Of Life: Loneliness In Childhood, Adolescence, Adulthood And Old Age. by Denis Dralyuk Price verified 3 hours ago

Loneliness is a common condition in modern times and many people complain that they feel unhappy because they consider it a cruel fate. However, this is really just their choice. Money, fame and their hobby can satisfy them, but true happiness is children, family and closest friends. We are all social creatures and we need other people around us, so most of us feel terribly lonely when there is no communication. However, sometimes we are lonely, even when we are surrounded by colleagues or members of our family. Why? Because we decide to feel so. This choice is mostly on a subconscious level, and we do not realize why. Let's try to understand why we feel so lonely in my life. Itself loneliness is the normal sense in us - we are born, live and die alone. And the only person with whom we spent his entire life is ourselves. And this is wonderful, because it gives us a chance to know each other and share yourself with people who have chosen. In every stage of life a person can feel lonely. As a child, young person or mature aging. Loneliness is always unpleasant and depressing, but it is largely a matter of personal choice. And everyone can find the strength to overcome it. For the purpose of the first place you need just a little faith and optimism, and sometimes - a little support from family or friends. Or to find any, if you do not have... And everything is changed, life is wonderful, and loneliness disappears forever.

From Dream to Dice: Creating & Running a Role-Playing Game (My Storytelling Guides Book 3) by Aron Christensen (Loose Leaf Stories) 4.7 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

I've written two other books (so far) on my tricks and tools for running table-top role-playing games. But now it's time to put those tools to the test - making an actual RPG campaign. Right here, right now, on the page. So let's do this! I'll start with the seed of a story idea, go through world-building and character creation, then expanding that basic plot out into scenes, combats and crises. This is an up-close, behind the scenes look at how I make a game. Then I'll run the campaign for my group. The second half of this book details what went right, what went wrong, how I kept the game moving and my friends entertained. From the dream that inspired me to the dice hitting the table, this is how I run an RPG.

Saturnastra Chicot by Teresita Blanco Price verified 3 hours ago

Preface Chicot is the sixth book in my fantasy series. You can read them whichever way you please. It will not change too much the understanding of the whole. The books are designed to be their own stand alone work. Still, depending on the order you choose, you may miss a few key details. Chicot explains the source of the weapons that were key in the story of Melina. He is a craftsman, and he made tools both for war and for peace. He was mostly known in Saturnastra for his weapons for war. This book is his story. I find that a person who makes a weapon is just as interesting as the guy who wields it. Without skilled weaponsmith, people today would be fighting with clubs. This story also explains in detail how the guild system works. Guilds tend to get put on a pedestal in most fantasy books. They were never painted in their true corrupted colors. Chicot's main issue with them was that apprentices had to work free for a period of time, before getting their Journeyman license. Nobody in their right mind should, ever, ever work for free. IntroductionChicot is another one of my books told from a down to earth perspective. It is a bit of a fantastic biography. The book is told from the perspective of a character within the story. While Melina's story was obtained from numerous interviews, Chicot's story was put together by someone who grew up with him. Jozef paints all the different faces of Chicot. Since he is not a professional biographer type of person, Jozef only tells things as he sees it. As you read the book, you will realize that Jozef is not the most reliable narrator. Unreliable narrators is kind of my thing. Every human has its own biased, and Jozef is not different with that matter. Still, he is not the type of person to downplay Chicot's flaws. As far as flaws are concerned, Chicot has many of them. This is just part of designing a well-rounded type of person. This writing style also helps ground this fantasy story by limiting the point of view. As with ...

Welcome to The Blood Gift Book two in a dramatic new trilogy In a land of impossible things, where the ability to touch and use Strand brings gifts of power, ex-assassin Vehemence is walking an uncertain path. Both the Guild of Impossible Things, whose job it is to protect the strand, and the Faction, which works against the Guild it considers corrupt, are determined that Vehemence the Blood-Linker should work for them. Claimed by the Faction before he has a real chance to decide by himself, Vehemence finds himself living a life he didn't knowingly choose. War stirs the land, Kingdom and Duchy erupting into violence towards each other and Dolour, Vehemence's master, has to reveal his true identity when the Guild insists he give up leadership of his hex-breaking group. But the Guild too, suffers a blow, when their all-seeing Oracle leaves, and seeks out Vehemence and the remains of the group, determined to break the hex on the Swamps, and find out the truth of what happened there all those years ago. She wishes to continue the hex-breaking work and the group, along with members of the Faction, rally to her cause. But Vehemence no longer knows where his allegiance should lie. Always wanting redemption for himself, now he finds himself wishing for freedom. Especially once he learns the true range of his abilities as a Blood Linker. It is obvious now that Dolour, and possibly others, have not told him the truth about what he can do. As priorities and allegiances shift, the hex-breaking group loses members, and Vehemence, unsure what his path should be, must take his future into his own hands, and decide for himself where his powers will be best used. This is the startling second book in the Blood Gift trilogy, set in a fantasy world where the impossible is never out of reach.

Understanding Open vs. Closed Adoption, Preparing for Possible Difficulties, Pros & Cons of Sharing Pictures & Updates, Visiting Birthparents, Social Media, Appropriate Gifts, & More... Even when the same couple is involved in more than one adoption, each situation will require a different answer to that question. And to make a complicated question even more difficult, there are many layers to open adoption that will each require an answer in order to have a healthy adoption triad. How often should you share pictures and updates? What are the pros and cons of connecting with birthparents over social media? What risks are being taken by involving extended family members in your adoption relationships? What about visiting face-to-face? This book may not be able to answer the question for you about how open your adoption should be, but it will give you tools to help you answer it for yourself! 10 Open Adoption Essentials: What Children Need Their Adoptive Parents & Birthparents to Know About Open Adoption Relationships After an infant is adopted, why is it so common for relationships to fall apart between adoptive parents and birthparents? One reason is because that relationship is so unique from any other relationship in this world that it is difficult for those involved to foresee what that could go wrong. It does not have to be this way. You owe it to yourself and others in your adoption triad (child, adoptive parents, birthparents) to learn as much as you can in order to sidestep some of the bumps you may experience along your journey. There are many factors that go into a healthy adoption triad, but it is always good to start out ...

Online as it is in Heaven: Theology and the Internet by Mike van Goch Price verified 4 hours ago

We're living in an age of constant movement. Our world is changing at the breakneck speed of progress as we become the most connected, most educated, and most information-saturated generation ever. And in the midst of this marvel, we get invited to a mobile game on Facebook. We spend hours scrolling mindlessly on couches and toilets. we make sure our entire social circle knows what we had to eat for Sunday brunch. But what if there was a deeper purpose to the Internet. A reason behind our phones becoming ubiquitous. A plan for the tech and connectedness we often take for granted in our lives. What if God had a plan for your data plan. A reason for creating fibre optic high-speed internet and laptops, alongside the platypus and photosynthesis. An Idea of what to do with sin and social media alike. And what if the bad parts of the online world are opposed to that plan. Like porn, gossip and trolls on Reddit. Is there a heavenly good to every laptop and smartphone in the hands of nine-year-olds and millennials alike? Online as it is in Heaven, looks into what that reason and purpose might be and where it might be heading. For the Church, for its pastors and for Christians living in the world but not of it.

My Life As A Retail Pharmacist - A Fictionalized Memoir by Adam Thomas 4.1 Stars (10 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Adam Thomas thought he led a charmed life. Happily married with an adorable set of twins he was a member of the most trusted profession in the country. Yes, retail pharmacy had its shortcomings, but Adam handled adversity gracefully. Even though he knew 'the customer wasn't always right', Adam didn't allow the volatility of such work hazards to permeate his rational thinking and sound judgment. One day, however, everything changes. His once charmed life is turned upside down. So begins the calamity Adam Thomas endures. My Life As A Retail Pharmacist - A Fictionalized Memoir follows Adam as he navigates the struggles of standing up for what he believes. Tanya Stenke-Branch blatantly eavesdrops on Adam's transaction with customer Milton R. Green. She dislikes Adam's solution to Green's insurance issue that arises and takes it upon herself to intervene. Adam is vocally upset with the unwelcome advice. But, according to 'this wife of a prominent surgeon', Tanya's interference is in Mr. Green's best interests. A reasonable everyday situation that Adam has handled numerous times in the past mutates into an unsalvageable disaster. Adam is ultimately terminated from Shaw Drug for his unprofessional behavior and his life begins to spiral out of control. What happens challenges Adam to question everything he once knew. When Tanya gossips to her friends at the local café about the incident, she discloses pertinent, yet confidential information, intentionally violating numerous HIPAA regulations. Fortunately for Adam, Paul Davis, Attorney at Law, just happens to overhear. Adam's case for retribution has considerable merit. As the lawsuit begins, the messy repercussions from such sensationalist trash that is so abundant in today's world surface. Adam's grasp on his charmed life continues to slip. The legal proceeding strains his familial interactions. His wife, Val, tries desperately to maintain balance, but Tanya and her lawyers just don't play fair. Could such a random ...

Hell on the Range by Chuck Mason (Lume Books) Price verified 6 hours ago

Chuck Whelan, one of the top line operators working out of the Marshal's office, is assigned to a mission in West Kansas. The government is giving up some of its land to farmers, and those farmers who win the local land-race, will be the one who get to choose the best land available, and lay their stake. Knowing that Cy Tropman owns a lot of the land on the neighbouring Sweet Springs is of concern to the Federal Marshal's office. They suspect he will go for the majority of land and not through following the law. Chuck Whelan is the only hope the farmers will get of laying claim to land fairly. Whelan's arrival in Sweet Springs is not different to his expectations. Trouble is rife and his welcome is highlighted by the beating up of a farmer by a hardcase who works for Tropman. Helping the farmer immediately places Whelan in Tropman's spotlight. As the race nears and Whelan's familiarity with the town grows, he knows the farmers will have a hard time claiming land that would suit their needs. With children and women in tow, they stand even less of a chance. The farmers don't have the law on their side... Whelan is their only hope. Can he help them stay alive long enough for them to claim some land that would be rightfully theirs? Chuck Mason is one of many pseudonyms for Donald S. Rowland, a British author born in Norfolk, England. His previous roles include film projectionist and Senior Clerk and Local Government Officer. He began his full-time writing career in 1964, starting with science-fiction before moving on to Westerns.
