Over 50 and Fabulous : The Second Adulthood Thriving Guide by Tania Klein 5.0 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

You are fifty. Now what? As women approach their fiftieth birthday, they often experience hot flashes, mood swings, and an array of emotions, ranging from frustration, anxiety, desperation, hopelessness, blissful ignorance, and a false sense of bravery. Rarely, if ever, do women say that the day they turned fifty was the best day of their lives. But what if we were to turn this narrative around and start viewing turning fifty (sixty, seventy, or any age, for that matter) as the time in our lives when we finally get to be our true selves and do things that are truly important to us? When, instead of trying to conform to society's outdated standards, we can proudly embrace our uniqueness. A time when expectations and polite social behavior don't make you feel boxed in or that you need to "act your age," but rather, cause you to see yourself as an immensely advanced person capable of doing whatever you set your mind on. This is the time to rewrite the History of Aging and reconsider what is possible in your Second Adulthood. Not only for the rare kind of women that lead the movement but for all of us. In her book, founder and CEO of Rejuvenation Station and creator of Phace Gym, Tania Yanis Klein, makes a compelling case for rethinking your current age, modifying your daily routine, adding restorative face and neck exercises, and why she thinks these actions will change your life. "There is so much we can do to look our best without turning to plastic surgery or dressing like our daughters. And looking older than you are might be a sign that you don't take good care of yourself and your body."- Dr. Heike Franz, Coach for women 50+

DEAD DOG ROAD: A True Story Into The Dark World Of An Abused Child by Diane N. Black (BLACK FLOWER PRESS) 4.7 Stars (41 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

IN A SMALL TEXAS TOWN, THE DIRECTOR OF A CHILDREN'S HOME TRIES TO SAVE THREE ADOPTED RUSSIAN CHILDREN LIVING WITH A SADISTIC WOMAN IN THE BACKWOODS OF CANEY HEAD. A heart-stopping story that highlights the failure of the agencies we trust to protect the most vulnerable among us -- and a truth more compelling and powerful than we could imagine. Abuse reports from neighbors draw attention to twelve-year-old Alexey who runs away to hide in the woods. The local child protection agency sends the director of the children's home to visit Alexey and his younger sisters, Anastasia and Svetlana. But despite her compelling report the agency believes the denials of the adoptive mother and leaves the children in the abusive home. Knowing the horrible truth, the director faces one obstacle after another as she tries to find someone to protect the children from the unspeakable. Dead Dog Road -- a place where secrets are buried like the injured fighting dogs who are dumped there.

Nine Lives: Drunk Stoned and Stupid / Happy Joyous and Free by Bob Huppert 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Nine Lives is the brutally honest journey of one man's journey from the Hell that is drug and alcohol addiction (Drunk Stoned & Stupid) to a life free from bondage (Happy Joyous & Free.) Randy called. That's possibly the hardest step to take toward recovery, reaching out for help. Randy had been driving around with a loaded revolver in his lap, trying to gather the courage to park somewhere and end his pain. Permanently. So why not make one last call? The details of the call don't matter. The only thing a man in that situation hears is, "I know how you feel. I felt that way myself." And he KNEW that I knew. It wasn't just "I feel your pain" bullshit. All my years of pain and destruction finally had a purpose, a reason, a meaning. "We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it." I finally understood. I had something to offer Randy that no one else in his life could offer. No one but another cocaine addict who had been through the whole nightmare and came out the other side could say or do anything that would have any effect on him. We talked for a long time, trading horror stories. 'I'll tell you my worst fuck-up if you tell me yours.'

Stryker: The Siege of Sadr City by Konrad R.K. Ludwig (Roland-Kjos Publishing) 4.5 Stars (852 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

In the spring of 2008, Coalition troops responded in-force to what quickly became one of the largest, bloodiest and most influential battles of the Iraq War. For nearly three months, American and Iraqi forces fought a vicious battle over the most densely populated district of Baghdad, against a ruthless and well-organized insurgent militia known as the Jaish al-Mahdi. Sgt. Ludwig's gripping narrative offers an unfiltered view of the Final Battle of Sadr City through the unforgiving sights of his machine gun. Eager to test his mettle and make a difference in the world, he enlists with the United States Army as an infantryman and gets assigned to a tight-knit unit of hardened veterans known as "Bull Company." Having already fought in the battles of Fallujah and Mosul, Bull Company embarks on a 15-month combat deployment to the front lines of Sadr City -- which culminates in a brutal mission to push deep behind enemy lines, capture a well-guarded militia stronghold, and hold their ground "for as long as it takes."

ROOSEVELT AND CHURCHILL men of secrets (David Stafford World War II History) by David Stafford (Lume Books WW2 Non-Fiction History, A Joffe Books Company) 4.4 Stars (84 Reviews)    Price verified one minute ago

A THOROUGH EXAMINATION OF THE VITAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TWO OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT STATESMEN DURING WORLD WAR TWO. 'However much they valued their special relationship, neither man allowed it to trump national goals. David Stafford's fascinating book is a useful reminder of how complicated the Grand Alliance actually was.' New York Times 'An intriguing book which makes a very good read.' Irish Independent 'A swift, well-documented assessment of the relationship's "volatile mix of friendship, rivalry and resentment".' Kirkus Reviews 'Much of this book upsets accepted views... Stafford has the precious gift of making technical subjects easy to follow; he writes clearly, and maintains a strong narrative flow. This is most readable history.' The Sunday Times Roosevelt and Churchill were titans of the twentieth century with a unique relationship. It was based on interlinked national histories, partially shared nationality (Churchill was half-American), love for the navy and a common belief in the superiority of Anglo-Saxon institutions. Above all, it was cemented by shared enemies: Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. On these foundations, Churchill and Roosevelt constructed a fighting alliance unlike any other in history. A Combined Chiefs of Staff, Anglo-American war-making boards, and an atomic alliance helped to deliver victory in 1945. The two men also developed an extraordinary personal relationship, communicating almost daily. Their camaraderie ended abruptly with Roosevelt's death on 12 April 1945, just hours before American and British troops liberated Buchenwald and Belsen. At the heart of this special relationship, hidden by layers of secrecy, was a far-reaching sharing of intelligence which would endure well beyond their own premierships. In this fascinating account, David Stafford draws on declassified information and his own specialist understanding of intelligence to illuminate the relationship between two men who, as leaders and allies, were ...

Jerusalem's Traitor: Josephus, Masada, and the Fall of Judea by Desmond Seward 4.4 Stars (57 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

An ancient historian who watched the destruction of Jerusalem... When the Jews revolted against Rome in 66 CE, Josephus, a Jerusalem aristocrat, was made a general in his nation's army. Captured by the Romans, he saved his skin by finding favour with the emperor Vespasian. He then served as an adviser to the Roman legions, running a network of spies inside Jerusalem, in the belief that the Jews' only hope of survival lay in surrender to Rome. As a Jewish eyewitness who was given access to Vespasian's campaign notebooks, Josephus is our only source of information for the war of extermination that ended in the destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple, and the amazing times in which he lived. He is of vital importance for anyone interested in the Middle East, Jewish history, and the early history of Christianity. Praise for Desmond Seward: 'Undeniably the work of someone who knows and accepts the standards of critical history but... who sees the past also as an epic or a colourful spectacle' - Professor David Knowles, The Times Literary Supplement 'His scholarship is great, his theme both interesting and largely unexplored, and his judgement sound' - The Economist Desmond Seward is a British popular historian, best known for The Hundred Years War, never out of print since 1978, The Monks of War, The Wars of the Roses and Richard III - all republished by the Folio Society. His latest is The Demon's Brood, a history of the Plantagenet kings in one short volume.

Take A Chance (The Chanceville Chronicles Book 1) by Lynn Ross 4.6 Stars (22 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Professional and ambitious to a fault, Cora O'Malley has no time for the fascinating mystery author, Trent Rogers, she chances to meet in the airport -- even if he is easy on the eyes. But when she returns from an extremely successful business trip only to find herself fired with an explanation that makes no sense, Cora decides to hire Trent to find out the real story. Trent keeps it to himself that writing mysteries and conducting actual investigations are two very different things. The assignment is the perfect excuse to get to know Cora better, especially now that she has the time for romance. But Cora also has a wild-child past that Trent never would have expected of the buttoned-up businesswoman he first met. Part of her past is Dougie, her childhood best friend whose casual familiarity with Cora sets Trent's teeth on edge. Suddenly, relationship-challenged Cora has to decide whether she wants to fan flames from a comfortable old spark or take a chance on a new love. Full of sweet and sassy banter, Take a Chance is a fun, positive story sure to make you smile. This "closed-door" romantic comedy has plenty of humor and romantic chemistry, but there are no graphic sex scenes on the page. There is some limited adult language and suggestive humor.

Turkey's Economic Odyssey Since 2000: From Ascent to Turmoil by Kadir Yürükoğlu 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 11 hours ago

This book reviews economic policies and performance in Turkey since 2000. Coming out of a severe crisis at the turn of the century and years of coalition governments, the economy stabilized, supported by an IMF program, and recovered rapidly, buoyed by international capital flows. While high interest rates and currency appreciation attracted hot money, the construction sector and consumption growth led the economy in the 2010s. External debt piled up rapidly. The tide turned after 2011 as the ruling Justice and Development Party became overconfident after several election victories, started undoing structural reforms, and shifted from the parliamentary system to a one-person rule in 2018. Turkey has suffered from an insidious decay of institutions and a lack of respect for the rule of law. Unraveling inflation was made worse by the president's interventions in monetary policy by cutting policy interest rates, leaving the economy with even higher inflation and depleted foreign exchange reserves. While some see the recent appointments of the Minister of Finance and the Central Bank governor as credible attempts to return to economic orthodoxy, recovery will likely be arduous if not impossible, under the current political structure.

What's Breath Got to Do With it: Synchronizing breathing with being by Offer Dan 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 9 hours ago

For your information You can find on the internet and download the complete eBook for free. Those who "laugh last" are the ones who postpone the last breath and breathe well until the day comes. My mom practiced Yoga and was a breathwork instructor. I started juggling my breath at the age of nine. Five decades later, I decided to write about my methods, personal experiences, and intimate memoirs, sharing my insights. The book is a culmination of persistent knowledge-seeking guided by science and cross-examined by personal observations; the approach sidesteps from the trodden path in presentation and interpretation. Even though Air is light, the subject of breathing can be heavy, burdened with myths and mystic words. I aim to simplify tangled topics yet deeply penetrate the matters discussed. The added humor should assist in digesting the fiber of understanding respiration. Here's a summary of what's covered: • Basic explanations of the biology and chemistry of breathing. • Indications to assess personal effects of different breathing practices. • Practical ways to evaluate an individual's breathing profile. • Breathing exercises for physical and mental wellness. • Breathing tools for responding to immediate situations. Chances are my breathing practices will affect you differently than they affect me. Therefore, I intend to provide you with the know-hows and ways to tweak my practices so they may better suit you as an individual. Along the way, I will answer many questions like the ones below. • Why do traumatic events register differently when screaming out as opposed to holding the breath? • How can synchronizing smiles with inhaling augment the effect of breathing exercises? • How can video recordings of night sleeping make mouth-taping redundant? • How does a 'breathing clock' improve body language synchronization when speaking to an audience? • How does 'Dying man's breathing' assist in overcoming cravings? • How can the ...

Twilight Zone Reflections: An Introduction to the Philosophical Imagination by Saul Traiger Price verified one hour ago

Twilight Zone Reflections is the first book of its kind to explore the entirety of The Twilight Zone (1959-1964) as a series. It acts as both an introduction to the field of philosophy and as a complete guide to the philosophical issues illustrated throughout the original 1959-64 television series. Author Saul Traiger explores each of the 156 episodes, investigating the show's themes in metaphysics, epistemology, moral and political philosophy, and other topics in a way that is accessible to both seasoned philosophers and those outside academia. Each short chapter dives into a single episode and concludes with helpful cross-references to other episodes that explore similar philosophical problems and subjects. For example, a reader may be interested in questions about the nature of the mind and whether machines can think. By referencing this book, they could easily discover the thematic connections between episodes like "I Sing the Body Electric" or "The Lateness of the Hour," and learn how both episodes introduce the viewer to possible worlds that challenge us to consider whether our idea of the mind, and even our very personhood, extends beyond the human to robots and other artificial intelligences. Each chapter introduces fundamental philosophical questions such as these through the lens of The Twilight Zone and inspires additional exploration. Further readings are suggested for all episodes, making this volume indispensable to academics, students, and fans of the show. Each chapter is short and accessible, ensuring that this book is the perfect resource to accompany a complete series re-watch. The Twilight Zone considered questions that strike at the heart of philosophical inquiry, such as the nature of self, the existence of god, the possibility of an afterlife, the relationship between knowledge and mental illness, the nature of possibility, even the nature of imagination itself, and so much more. Traiger argues that each episode can serve as an entry ...

Environmental Knowledge, Race, and African American Literature (Literatures, Cultures, and the Environment) by Matthias Klestil (Palgrave Macmillan) 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 4 hours ago

This open access book suggests new ways of reading nineteenth-century African American literature environmentally. Combining insights from ecocriticism, African American studies, and Foucauldian theory, Matthias Klestil examines forms of environmental knowledge in African American writing ranging from antebellum slave narratives and pamphlets to Charlotte Forten's journals, Booker T. Washington's autobiographies, and Charles W. Chesnutt's short fiction. The volume highlights how literary forms of environmental knowledge in the African American tradition were shaped by the histories of slavery and race, mainstream environmental writing traditions, and African American forms of expression and intertextuality. Turning to the Underground Railroad, debates over education and home-building, and the aesthetics of the pastoral and the georgic, Environmental Knowledge, Race, and African American Literature provides an original perspective on the African American ecoliterary traditionthat uncovers new facets of canonical and understudied texts and offers new directions for ecocriticism and African American studies.

This volume features new work on cinema in early twentieth-century Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Republican China. Looking beyond relatively well-studied cities like Shanghai, these essays foreground cinema's relationship with imperialism and colonialism and emphasize the rapid development of cinema as a sociocultural institution. These essays examine where films were screened; how cinema-going as a social activity adapted from and integrated with existing social norms and practices; the extent to which Cantonese opera and other regional performance traditions were models for the development of cinematic conventions; the role foreign films played in the development of cinema as an industry in the Republican era; and much more.

Surrender: How the Clinton Administration Completed the Reagan Revolution by Michael Allen Meeropol 4.3 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

Michael Meeropol argues that the ballooning of the federal budget deficit was not a serious problem in the 1980s, nor were the successful recent efforts to get it under control the basis for the prosperous economy of the mid-1990s. In this controversial book, the author provides a close look at what actually happened to the American economy during the years of the "Reagan Revolution" and reveals that the huge deficits had no negative effect on the economy. It was the other policies of the Reagan years--high interest rates to fight inflation, supply-side tax cuts, reductions in regulation, increased advantages for investors and the wealthy, the unraveling of the safety net for the poor--that were unsuccessful in generating more rapid growth and other economic improvements. Meeropol provides compelling evidence of the failure of the U.S. economy between 1990 and 1994 to generate rising incomes for most of the population or improvements in productivity. This caused, first, the electoral repudiation of President Bush in 1992, followed by a repudiation of President Clinton in the 1994 Congressional elections. The Clinton administration made a half-hearted attempt to reverse the Reagan Revolution in economic policy, but ultimately surrendered to the Republican Congressional majority in 1996 when Clinton promised to balance the budget by 2000 and signed the welfare reform bill. The rapid growth of the economy in 1997 caused surprisingly high government revenues, a dramatic fall in the federal budget deficit, and a brief euphoria evident in an almost uncontrollable stock market boom. Finally, Meeropol argues powerfully that the next recession, certain to come before the end of 1999, will turn the predicted path to budget balance and millennial prosperity into a painful joke on the hubris of public policymakers. Accessibly written as a work of recent history and public policy as much as economics, this book is intended for all Americans interested in issues of economic ...

The Far Shore by Edward Ellsberg 4.6 Stars (577 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

June 6, 1944, D-Day: Allied forces took the beaches at Normandy -- and the naval engineering genius of Edward Ellsberg would play a crucial part. Before World War II, Edward Ellsberg had already established himself as a true innovator and master naval engineer, revolutionizing the salvage and rescue of sunken vessels like no one before. Then, having served his country for over a decade, he retired to private life. But his work was not finished. Within hours of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the aging and physically ill Ellsberg was on a train to Washington, DC, to offer his services once again. And they would be needed for the greatest military invasion in human history. In The Far Shore, Rear Admiral Ellsberg describes in detail the meticulous preparation and efforts behind the Normandy Invasion -- efforts that would keep the flow of men and materials streaming onto the beaches and into the heart of Europe. From dealing with the extremes of engineering possibilities to wrestling with the knowledge that countless lives would depend on the success of his intricate planning, Ellsberg would work himself into exhaustion to do his part. His achievements would eventually earn him the Distinguished Service Medal and lead to his appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Vividly described by a man who saw firsthand the horrors of war and the cost of victory, The Far Shore takes readers through the brutal surf, onto the bloody beaches, and into the mind of one of World War II's little-known heroes.

Misreading the Bengal Delta: Climate Change, Development, and Livelihoods in Coastal Bangladesh (Culture, Place, and Nature) by Camelia Dewan 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Perilously close to sea level and vulnerable to floods, erosion, and cyclones, Bangladesh is one of the top recipients of development aid earmarked for climate change adaptation. Yet to what extent do adaptation projects address local needs and concerns? Combining environmental history and ethnographic fieldwork with development professionals, rural farmers, and landless women, Misreading the Bengal Delta critiques development narratives of Bangladesh as a "climate change victim." It examines how development actors repackage colonial-era modernizing projects, which have caused severe environmental effects, as climate-adaptation solutions. Seawalls meant to mitigate against cyclones and rising sea levels instead silt up waterways and induce drainage-related flooding. Other adaptation projects, from saline aquaculture to high-yield agriculture, threaten soil fertility, biodiversity, and livelihoods. Bangladesh's environmental crisis goes beyond climate change, extending to coastal vulnerabilities that are entwined with underemployment, debt, and the lack of universal healthcare. This timely book analyzes how development actors create flawed causal narratives linking their interventions in the environment and society of the Global South to climate change. Ultimately, such misreadings risk exacerbating climatic threats and structural inequalities. Misreading the Bengal Delta is available in an open access edition through the Sustainable History Monograph Pilot, thanks to the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The Disarticulate: Language, Disability, and the Narratives of Modernity (Cultural Front Book 8) by James Berger (NYU Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 10 hours ago

Language is integral to our social being. But what is the status of those who stand outside of language? The mentally disabled, "wild" children, people with autism and other neurological disorders, as well as animals, infants, angels, and artificial intelligences, have all engaged with language from a position at its borders. In the intricate verbal constructions of modern literature, the 'disarticulate' -- those at the edges of language -- have, paradoxically, played essential, defining roles. Drawing on the disarticulate figures in modern fictional works such as Billy Budd, The Sound and the Fury, Nightwood, White Noise, and The Echo Maker, among others, James Berger shows in this intellectually bracing study how these characters mark sites at which aesthetic, philosophical, ethical, political, medical, and scientific discourses converge. It is also the place of the greatest ethical tension, as society confronts the needs and desires of "the least of its brothers." Berger argues that the disarticulate is that which is unaccountable in the discourses of modernity and thus stands as an alternative to the prevailing social order. Using literary history and theory, as well as disability and trauma theory, he examines how these disarticulate figures reveal modernity's anxieties in terms of how it constructs its others.

Co-governed Sovereignty Network: Legal Basis and Its Prototype & Applications with MIN Architecture by Hui Li (Springer) Price verified 3 hours ago

This open access book introduces MIN, a novel networking architecture to implement the sovereign equality of all countries in the cyberspace. Combining legal theory and network technology, it first discusses the historical development of sovereignty and expounds the legal basis of cyberspace sovereignty. Then, based on the high-performance blockchain, it describes a new network architecture designed to implement co-governance at the technical level. Explaining network sovereignty and including rich illustrations and tables, the book helps readers new to the field grasp the evolution and necessity of cyberspace sovereignty, gain insights into network trends and develop a preliminary understanding of complex network technologies such as blockchain, security mechanisms and routing strategies. The MIN network implements the "four principles" of cyberspace adopted by most nations and people: respecting cyber sovereignty; maintaining peace and protection; promoting opennessand cooperation; and building good order to provide network system security. There maybe three scales of application scenario for MIN, the big one is for UN of Cyberspace, the middle one is for Smart city, the small one is for enterprise group or organizations as private network, MIN-VPN. We have developed the product of MIN-VPN, you could find its message on the preface if care about the security of your network.

The Nature-Study Idea: And Related Writings (The Liberty Hyde Bailey Library) by Liberty Hyde Bailey Price verified 11 hours ago

In The Nature-Study Idea, Liberty Hyde Bailey articulated the essence of a social movement, led by ordinary public-school teachers, that lifted education out of the classroom and placed it into firsthand contact with the natural world. The aim was simple but revolutionary: sympathy with nature to increase the joy of living and foster stewardship of the earth. With this definitive edition, John Linstrom reintroduces The Nature-Study Idea as an environmental classic for our time. It provides historical context through a wealth of related writings, and introductory essays relate Bailey's vision to current work in education and the intersection of climate change and culture. In this period of planetary turmoil, Bailey's ambition to cultivate wonder (in adults as well as children) and lead readers back into the natural world is more important than ever.

Organizational Design by Alan S. Gutterman (Sustainable Entrepreneurship Project) 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 10 hours ago

An organization does not simply appear on its own; in fact, organizations are contrived social systems that are created by like-minded groups of persons in order to pursue and hopefully achieve a stated goal or purpose. Organizational design is concerned with the factors and issues that must be considered, and the rules and processes that must be implemented, with respect to the design, development, implementation and maintenance of a successful and effective organization. Organizational design is more than simply organizational structure -- the boxes and lines that are normally found on a traditional organization chart -- and extends outward to include a variety of other factors including information and reward systems; management and decision making processes; organizational culture, including mission, vision, values and norms; strategy, including the goals or purposes for which the organization exists; and the human resources who will do the work necessary for the organization to operate, survive and thrive. This book is intended to be a valuable resource for anyone who finds themselves operating in the important role of "organizational designer".

Diamonds and War: State, Capital, and Labor in British-Ruled Palestine by David De Vries (Berghahn Books) 3.2 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

The mining of diamonds, their trading mechanisms, their financial institutions, and, not least, their cultural expressions as luxury items have engaged the work of historians, economists, social scientists, and international relations experts. Based on previously unexamined historical documents found in archives in Belgium, England, Israel, the Netherlands, and the United States, this book is the first in English to tell the story of the formation of one of the world's main strongholds of diamond production and trade in Palestine during the 1930s and 1940s. The history of the diamond-cutting industry, characterized by a long-standing Jewish presence, is discussed as a social history embedded in the international political economy of its times; the genesis of the industry in Palestine is placed on a broad continuum within the geographic and economic dislocations of Dutch, Belgian, and German diamond-cutting centers. In providing a micro-historical and interdisciplinary perspective, the story of the diamond industry in Mandate Palestine proposes a more nuanced picture of the uncritical approach to the strict boundaries of ethnic-based occupational communities. This book unravels the Middle-eastern pattern of state intervention in the empowerment of private capital and recasts this craft culture's inseparability from international politics during a period of war and transformation of empire.

Mission AI: The New System Technology (Research for Policy) by Haroon Sheikh (Springer) 4.5 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

This open access book offers a strategic perspective on AI and the process of embedding it in society. ?After decades of research, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now entering society at large. Due to its general purpose character, AI will change society in multiple, fundamental and unpredictable ways. Therefore, the Netherlands Scienti?c Council for Government Policy (WRR) characterizes AI as a system technology: a rare type of technologies that have a systemic impact on society. Earlier system technologies include electricity, the combustion engine and the computer. The history of these technologies provides us with useful insights about what it takes to direct the introduction of AI in society. The WRR identifies five key tasks to structurally work on this process: demystification, contextualisation, engagement, regulation and positioning. By clarifying what AI is (demystification), creating a functional ecosystem (contextualisation), involving diverse stakeholders (engagement), developing directive frameworks (regulation) and engaging internationally (positioning), societies can meaningfully influence how AI settles. Collectively, these activities steer the process of co-development between technology and society, and each representing a different path to safeguard public values. Mission AI - The New System Technology was originally published as an advisory report for the government of the Netherlands. The strategic analysis and the outlined recommendations are, however, relevant to every government and organization that aims to take up 'misson AI' and embed this newest system technology in our world.

The Concierge Class: How an unseen army of fixers is undermining democracy on behalf of corporations and the rich. And what we can do about it. by Kit Sadgrove 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 3 hours ago

Every day, an unseen army is working to advance the aims of corporations and the rich. From accountants to trade associations, and from scientists to think tanks, the members of the concierge class serve their masters diligently, devising ways to help them evade taxes, change legislation, and sway public opinion. And the result is more profit for the rich, a widening of inequality, and a weakening of democracy. The Concierge Class is the first book to explain the inner workings of concierge capitalism. It shows how the affluent co-opt skilled professionals into hiding their cash, pushing their agenda, and whispering in the ears of politicians. The book reveals who is doing the wealthy's dirty work, how they do it, and the steps we can take to stop it.

New Social Mobility: Second Generation Pioneers in Europe (IMISCOE Research Series) by Jens Schneider (Springer) 3.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 2 hours ago

This open access book comparatively analyses intergenerational social mobility in immigrant families in Europe. It is based on qualitative in-depth research into several hundred biographies and professional trajectories of young people with an immigrant working-class background, who made it into high-prestige professions. The biographies were collected and analysed by a consortium of researchers in nine European countries from Norway to Spain. Through these analyses, the book explores the possibilities of cross-country comparisons of how trajectories are related to different institutional arrangements at the national and local level. The analysis uncovers the interaction effects between structural/institutional settings and specific individual achievements and family backgrounds, and how these individuals responsed to and navigated successfully through sector-specific pathways into high-skilled professions, such as becoming a lawyer or a teacher. By this, it also explains why thesetrajectories of professional success and upward mobility have been so exceptional in the second generation of working-class origins, and it tells us a lot also about exclusion mechanisms that marked the school and professional careers of children of immigrants who went to school in the 1970s to 2000s in Europe - and still do.

Saving and Investment in the Twenty-First Century: The Great Divergence by Carl Christian von Weizsäcker (Springer) 4.6 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

The economy of the 21st century in the OECD countries and in China, is characterized by a new phenomenon: the structural surplus of private savings in relation to private investment. This is true even in a situation of prosperity and very low interest rates. On the one hand, this excess saving is due to people's increasing inclination to save in light of rising life expectancy, driven by the desire to have sufficient assets in old age. On the other hand, the demand for capital is not increasing to the same extent, so that investment is not keeping pace with the rising desire to save. The resulting gap between the private desire for wealth and private investment can only be closed by increasing public debt. This open access book offers a new, capital-theoretical perspective on the macroeconomic relationship between desired wealth and investment, and it presents new empirical data on private wealth and its composition in the OECD plus China area. The authors arguethat a free economic and social order can only be stabilized if the wealth aspirations of individuals are met under conditions of price stability. This is not possible without substantial net public debt. A new way of thinking about the economy as a whole is required. By way of an in-depth theoretical and empirical analysis, the book demonstrates this new way of thinking and describes the current challenges facing economic policy. It will appeal to economists and students of economics who are interested in macroeconomic theory and its economic policy implications. An impressive, and convincing theoretical dive into the fundamentals behind secular stagnation, with very strong implications for actual debt policy. Public debt may be needed to improve welfare. - Olivier Blanchard, Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and Professor of Economics Emeritus at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The Wolf King: Ibn Mardanish and the Construction of Power in al-Andalus (Medieval Societies, Religions, and Cultures) by Abigail Krasner Balbale 5.0 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

The Wolf King explores how political power was conceptualized, constructed, and wielded in twelfth-century al-Andalus, focusing on the eventful reign of Muhammad ibn Sad ibn Ahmad ibn Mardan?sh (r. 1147-1172). Celebrated in Castilian and Latin sources as el rey lobo/rex lupus and denigrated by Almohad and later Arabic sources as irreligious and disloyal to fellow Muslims because he fought the Almohads and served as vassal to the Castilians, Ibn Mardan?sh ruled a kingdom that at its peak constituted nearly half of al-Andalus and served as an important buffer between the Almohads and the Christian kingdoms of Castile and Aragon. Through a close examination of contemporary sources across the region, Abigail Krasner Balbale shows that Ibn Mardan?sh's short-lived dynasty was actually an attempt to integrate al-Andalus more closely with the Islamic East -- particularly the Abbasid caliphate. At stake in his battles against the Almohads was the very idea of the caliphate in this period, as well as who could define righteous religious authority. The Wolf King makes effective use of chronicles, chancery documents, poetry, architecture, coinage, and artifacts to uncover how Ibn Mardan?sh adapted language and cultural forms from around the Islamic world to assert and consolidate power -- and then tracks how these strategies, and the memory of Ibn Mardan?sh more generally, influenced expressions of kingship in subsequent periods.

Precarious Times: Temporality and History in Modern German Culture (Signale: Modern German Letters, Cultures, and Thought) by Anne Fuchs (Cornell University Press and Cornell University Library) Price verified 10 hours ago

In Precarious Times, Anne Fuchs explores how works of German literature, film, and photography reflect on the profound temporal anxieties precipitated by contemporary experiences of atomization, displacement, and fragmentation that bring about a loss of history and of time itself and that is peculiar to our current moment. The digital age places premiums on just-in-time deliveries, continual innovation, instantaneous connectivity, and around-the-clock availability. While some celebrate this 24/7 culture, others see it as profoundly destructive to the natural rhythm of day and night -- and to human happiness. Have we entered an era of a perpetual present that depletes the future and erodes our grasp of the past? Beginning its examination around 1900, when rapid modernization was accompanied by comparably intense reflection on changing temporal experience, Precarious Times provides historical depth and perspective to current debates on the "digital now." Expanding the modern discourse on time and speed, Fuchs deploys such concepts as attention, slowness and lateness to emphasize the uneven quality of time around the world.

Handbook of Computational Social Science for Policy by Eleonora Bertoni (Springer) 3.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

This open access handbook describes foundational issues, methodological approaches and examples on how to analyse and model data using Computational Social Science (CSS) for policy support. Up to now, CSS studies have mostly developed on a small, proof-of concept, scale that prevented from unleashing its potential to provide systematic impact to the policy cycle, as well as from improving the understanding of societal problems to the definition, assessment, evaluation, and monitoring of policies. The aim of this handbook is to fill this gap by exploring ways to analyse and model data for policy support, and to advocate the adoption of CSS solutions for policy by raising awareness of existing implementations of CSS in policy-relevant fields. To this end, the book explores applications of computational methods and approaches like big data, machine learning, statistical learning, sentiment analysis, text mining, systems modelling, and network analysis to different problems in the social sciences. The book is structured into three Parts: the first chapters on foundational issues open with an exposition and description of key policymaking areas where CSS can provide insights and information. In detail, the chapters cover public policy, governance, data justice and other ethical issues. Part two consists of chapters on methodological aspects dealing with issues such as the modelling of complexity, natural language processing, validity and lack of data, and innovation in official statistics. Finally, Part three describes the application of computational methods, challenges and opportunities in various social science areas, including economics, sociology, demography, migration, climate change, epidemiology, geography, and disaster management. The target audience of the book spans from the scientific community engaged in CSS research to policymakers interested in evidence-informed policy interventions, but also includes private companies holdingdata that can be used to ...

Europeanization in Sweden: Opportunities and Challenges for Civil Society Organizations (Studies on Civil Society Book 10) by Anna Meeuwisse (Berghahn Books) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Notwithstanding its many successes since 1945, the project of European integration currently faces major difficulties, from financial crises and mass immigration to the departure of the UK from the European Union. At the same time, these challenges have spurred civil society organizations within and across Europe, revealing a shared public sphere in which citizens can mobilize around refugee rights, opposition to austerity policies, and other issues. Europeanization in Sweden assembles new empirical research on how these processes have played out in one of the continent's wealthiest nations, providing insights into whether, and how, the "Swedish model" can guide European integration.

An Academy at the Court of the Tsars: Greek Scholars and Jesuit Education in Early Modern Russia (NIU Series in Slavic, East European, and Eurasian ... by Nikolaos A. Chrissidis 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 6 hours ago

The first formally organized educational institution in Russia was established in 1685 by two Greek hieromonks, Ioannikios and Sophronios Leichoudes. Like many of their Greek contemporaries in the seventeenth century, the brothers acquired part of their schooling in colleges of post-Renaissance Italy under a precise copy of the Jesuit curriculum. When they created a school in Moscow, known as the Slavo-Greco-Latin Academy, they emulated the structural characteristics, pedagogical methods, and program of studies of Jesuit prototypes. In this original work, Nikolaos A. Chrissidis analyzes the academy's impact on Russian educational practice and situates it in the contexts of Russian-Greek cultural relations and increased contact between Russia and Western Europe in the seventeenth century. Chrissidis demonstrates that Greek academic and cultural influences on Russia in the second half of the seventeenth century were Western in character, though Orthodox in doctrinal terms. He also shows that Russian and Greek educational enterprises were part of the larger European pattern of Jesuit academic activities that impacted Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox educational establishments and curricular choices. An Academy at the Court of the Tsars is the first study of the Slavo-Greco-Latin Academy in English and the only one based on primary sources in Russian, Church Slavonic, Greek, and Latin. It will interest scholars and students of early modern Russian and Greek history, of early modern European intellectual history and the history of science, of Jesuit education, and of Eastern Orthodox history and culture.

Incidental Archaeologists: French Officers and the Rediscovery of Roman North Africa by Bonnie Effros 4.4 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

In Incidental Archaeologists, Bonnie Effros examines the archaeological contributions of nineteenth-century French military officers, who, raised on classical accounts of warfare and often trained as cartographers, developed an interest in the Roman remains they encountered when commissioned in the colony of Algeria. By linking the study of the Roman past to French triumphant narratives of the conquest and occupation of the Maghreb, Effros demonstrates how Roman archaeology in the forty years following the conquest of the Ottoman Regencies of Algiers and Constantine in the 1830s helped lay the groundwork for the creation of a new identity for French military and civilian settlers. Effros uses France's violent colonial war, its efforts to document the ancient Roman past, and its brutal treatment of the region's Arab and Berber inhabitants to underline the close entanglement of knowledge production with European imperialism. Significantly, Incidental Archaeologists shows how the French experience in Algeria contributed to the professionalization of archaeology in metropolitan France. Effros demonstrates how the archaeological expeditions undertaken by the French in Algeria and the documentation they collected of ancient Roman military accomplishments reflected French confidence that they would learn from Rome's technological accomplishments and succeed, where the Romans had failed, in mastering the region.

The Logic of Causation by Avi Sion Price verified 10 hours ago

The Logic of Causation is a treatise of formal logic and of aetiology. It is an original and wide-ranging investigation of the definition of causation (deterministic causality) in all its forms, and of the deduction and induction of such forms. The work was carried out in three phases over a dozen years (1998-2010), each phase introducing more sophisticated methods than the previous to solve outstanding problems. This study was intended as part of a larger work on causal logic, which additionally treats volition and allied cause-effect relations (2004).

Time Matters: 7th edition by Alexandre Kassiantchouk 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 2 hours ago

8th edition available at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CW2WLHRW Two years ago, I started this book by explaining why the ancient Universe is red (or infrared), and how spiral galaxies counter centrifugal force from breaking them. Now I finish it with an explanation of how galaxies appeared from nothing but space and time, and where antimatter is. In the preface below you will find a list of long-standing problems solved in this book. Physicists, please read chapter 61 first: there I explain physics of observations for electrons, atoms, and "Black Holes". Astronomers, please read chapter 62 first, where 80-year-long problem of vanishing stars solved. I hope you enjoy reading my book, as I enjoyed writing it.

Revitalizing Collegiality: Restoring Faculty Authority in Universities (Research in the Sociology of Organizations Book 87) by Kerstin Sahlin (Emerald Publishing Limited) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 9 hours ago

The ebook edition of this title is Open Access and freely available to read online. The higher education and research system faces a constant dilemma. On the one hand, research and higher education are run by autonomous, interrelated academic communities, often described as collegial governance. On the other hand, they are an instrument for the fulfillment of goals that are often external to the academic community. What, then, is the role of academics and academic knowledge in governance of higher education and research, and how does this reflect on and impact their aims and overall place in society? Fostered through joint workshops and an open dialogue, this double volume of Research in the Sociology of Organizations develops a deeper understanding of collegiality, examining through a unique comparative perspective how it is translated and practiced in different settings across the world. Considering ways in which collegiality can be revitalized, this second installment argues for reintroducing collegiality both in analyzing the development of higher education systems and research and in the actual governing of universities. Revealing the globalization, homogenization and variation that have come to characterize the collegiate system, Revitalizing Collegiality critically considers the state of and future of the higher education system, and how we can consciously shape it moving forward.
