Hits to the Dome: The Chronicles of a Small Town Volume 1: Parts 1-6 by Selby Wost 4.7 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 12 hours ago

Worcester, New Hampshire, is a cesspool. It used to be a nice town until a wave of wealthy and clueless liberals took charge. Rome, Dakota, Richie, and Donny are four 14-year-old-boys who have to live in this collapsing hellscape, and they hate it. Everywhere they turn, there's a bum shooting up or taking a dump. Stoned hippies walk down the street with an aura of arrogance and self-satisfaction. At school, their commie teachers no longer bother with teaching actual subjects. Instead, all they do is praise themselves for their activism and force their viewpoints on their students. It seems like the four friends can't even walk home without some random demonstration blocking their way. They devise various plots to act out against the lunacy, setting them at odds with both the cops and the new-age Marxist regime. In a world full of parents, police, protesters, and pedophiles, the four friends are desperately trying to get by. The perils are numerous -- diversity festivals, molestation shacks, stoned elderly drivers listening to NPR, bum fights, shanty towns, and drug-addicted vagrants are all commonplace -- but our valiant heroes will fight to the last man.

UNLEASH KIDS BRAIN POWER: Proven Methods to Improve and Enhance Brain Power by BUD BROWN Price verified 11 hours ago

The book by Bud Brown is a good antidote to this misinformation. He has put an encyclopedic amount of information into this book. It is my expectation that it will become an invaluable reference guide for problem solving - to help families and educators who study child development.Just as importantly, the book can dispel some of the myths that have been shaped by almost 20 years of misinformation and misinterpretation. For example: Do children get smarter when they listen to music? The authors argue that this concept does not find scientific support. However, they note that music lessons can bring some benefits to children, as it helps them focus. After ten years of research, I whole heartedly agree with their conclusion that the best gift you can to do to your children is self-control, or self-mastery. They note that self-control and other higher brain functions (such as working memory, flexible thinking, and resistance to automatic responses) "contribute to the development of the most important [children's] basic brain function: the ability to control one's behavior in order to achieve a goal." Pointing out that self-control underlies many abilities, from socialization to school success, they argue:A similar finding from my own research led me to formulate seven life principles that enable children to excel emotionally, socially, and intellectually. All of these life skills are based on higher brain functions. It is important to note that Bud Brown debunk another myth by arguing that we promote self-control not by forcing children to sit still and chaining them to the table, but by encouraging them to play. They write: 'Probably it doesn't matter what interests your children; as long as they are actively involved in and focused on an activity, they will improve their ability to self-control and their prospects for the futureª. This book will be a welcome gift for you.

Dabbler in Drabbles, Volume Three: 300 short stories by Rhys Hughes (Gibbon Moon Books) Price verified 10 hours ago

A drabble is a flash fiction that is exactly one hundred words long. And here we have a cyclops who is writing them and telling them to his friend, a centaur. Three hundred drabbles. The stories are miniature adventures, comedies and tragedies, tales of space and time, accounts of voyages and discoveries, many of them ironic or paradoxical, some of them featuring robots and monsters and ghosts, but each one compressed into an easily-digested snack for the mind. And this is the third volume of four... "If I said he was a Welsh writer who writes as though he has gone to school with the best writing from all over the world, I wonder if my compliment would just sound provincial. Hughes' style, with all that means, is among the most beautiful I've encountered in several years." -- SAMUEL R. DELANY "Rhys Hughes seems almost the sum of our planet's literature. He toys with convention. He makes the metaphysical political, the personal incredible and the comic hints at subtle pain. Few living fictioneers approach this chef's sardonic confections, certainly not in English." -- MICHAEL MOORCOCK "It's a crime that Rhys Hughes is not as widely known as Italo Calvino and other writers of that stature. Brilliantly written and conceived, Hughes' fiction has few parallels anywhere in the world. In some alternate universe with a better sense of justice, his work triumphantly parades across all bestseller lists." -- JEFF VANDERMEER

EL PARAÍSO ESTÁ BAJO LOS PIES DE LOS GOBIERNOS: DIRIGIENDO LAS NACIONES CON MAQASID (Spanish Edition) by Abdellatif Raji (Yaraak, LLC.) Price verified 10 hours ago

Living in a Nuclear World: From Fukushima to Hiroshima (History and Philosophy of Technoscience) by Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent (Routledge) Price verified 44 minutes ago

The Fukushima disaster invites us to look back and probe how nuclear technology has shaped the world we live in, and how we have come to live with it. Since the first nuclear detonation (Trinity test) and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, all in 1945, nuclear technology has profoundly affected world history and geopolitics, as well as our daily life and natural world. It has always been an instrument for national security, a marker of national sovereignty, a site of technological innovation and a promise of energy abundance. It has also introduced permanent pollution and the age of the Anthropocene. This volume presents a new perspective on nuclear history and politics by focusing on four interconnected themes-violence and survival; control and containment; normalizing through denial and presumptions; memories and futures-and exploring their relationships and consequences. It proposes an original reflection on nuclear technology from a long-term, comparative and transnational perspective. It brings together contributions from researchers from different disciplines (anthropology, history, STS) and countries (US, France, Japan) on a variety of local, national and transnational subjects. Finally, this book offers an important and valuable insight into other global and Anthropocene challenges such as climate change.

Bringing together divergent approaches to justice theorising, this volume connects normative and philosophical theories with the more empirically focused approaches emerging today in the social and political sciences and policy scholarship. What's Breath Got to Do With it: Synchronizing breathing with being by Offer Dan 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified one hour ago

For your information You can find on the internet and download the complete eBook for free. Those who "laugh last" are the ones who postpone the last breath and breathe well until the day comes. My mom practiced Yoga and was a breathwork instructor. I started juggling my breath at the age of nine. Five decades later, I decided to write about my methods, personal experiences, and intimate memoirs, sharing my insights. The book is a culmination of persistent knowledge-seeking guided by science and cross-examined by personal observations; the approach sidesteps from the trodden path in presentation and interpretation. Even though Air is light, the subject of breathing can be heavy, burdened with myths and mystic words. I aim to simplify tangled topics yet deeply penetrate the matters discussed. The added humor should assist in digesting the fiber of understanding respiration. Here's a summary of what's covered: • Basic explanations of the biology and chemistry of breathing. • Indications to assess personal effects of different breathing practices. • Practical ways to evaluate an individual's breathing profile. • Breathing exercises for physical and mental wellness. • Breathing tools for responding to immediate situations. Chances are my breathing practices will affect you differently than they affect me. Therefore, I intend to provide you with the know-hows and ways to tweak my practices so they may better suit you as an individual. Along the way, I will answer many questions like the ones below. • Why do traumatic events register differently when screaming out as opposed to holding the breath? • How can synchronizing smiles with inhaling augment the effect of breathing exercises? • How can video recordings of night sleeping make mouth-taping redundant? • How does a 'breathing clock' improve body language synchronization when speaking to an audience? • How does 'Dying man's breathing' assist in overcoming cravings? • How can the ...

Twilight Zone Reflections: An Introduction to the Philosophical Imagination by Saul Traiger Price verified 12 hours ago

Twilight Zone Reflections is the first book of its kind to explore the entirety of The Twilight Zone (1959-1964) as a series. It acts as both an introduction to the field of philosophy and as a complete guide to the philosophical issues illustrated throughout the original 1959-64 television series. Author Saul Traiger explores each of the 156 episodes, investigating the show's themes in metaphysics, epistemology, moral and political philosophy, and other topics in a way that is accessible to both seasoned philosophers and those outside academia. Each short chapter dives into a single episode and concludes with helpful cross-references to other episodes that explore similar philosophical problems and subjects. For example, a reader may be interested in questions about the nature of the mind and whether machines can think. By referencing this book, they could easily discover the thematic connections between episodes like "I Sing the Body Electric" or "The Lateness of the Hour," and learn how both episodes introduce the viewer to possible worlds that challenge us to consider whether our idea of the mind, and even our very personhood, extends beyond the human to robots and other artificial intelligences. Each chapter introduces fundamental philosophical questions such as these through the lens of The Twilight Zone and inspires additional exploration. Further readings are suggested for all episodes, making this volume indispensable to academics, students, and fans of the show. Each chapter is short and accessible, ensuring that this book is the perfect resource to accompany a complete series re-watch. The Twilight Zone considered questions that strike at the heart of philosophical inquiry, such as the nature of self, the existence of god, the possibility of an afterlife, the relationship between knowledge and mental illness, the nature of possibility, even the nature of imagination itself, and so much more. Traiger argues that each episode can serve as an entry ...

Environmental Knowledge, Race, and African American Literature (Literatures, Cultures, and the Environment) by Matthias Klestil (Palgrave Macmillan) 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 12 hours ago

This open access book suggests new ways of reading nineteenth-century African American literature environmentally. Combining insights from ecocriticism, African American studies, and Foucauldian theory, Matthias Klestil examines forms of environmental knowledge in African American writing ranging from antebellum slave narratives and pamphlets to Charlotte Forten's journals, Booker T. Washington's autobiographies, and Charles W. Chesnutt's short fiction. The volume highlights how literary forms of environmental knowledge in the African American tradition were shaped by the histories of slavery and race, mainstream environmental writing traditions, and African American forms of expression and intertextuality. Turning to the Underground Railroad, debates over education and home-building, and the aesthetics of the pastoral and the georgic, Environmental Knowledge, Race, and African American Literature provides an original perspective on the African American ecoliterary traditionthat uncovers new facets of canonical and understudied texts and offers new directions for ecocriticism and African American studies.

Early Film Culture in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Republican China: Kaleidoscopic Histories by Emilie Yueh-yu Yeh 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 17 minutes ago

This volume features new work on cinema in early twentieth-century Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Republican China. Looking beyond relatively well-studied cities like Shanghai, these essays foreground cinema's relationship with imperialism and colonialism and emphasize the rapid development of cinema as a sociocultural institution. These essays examine where films were screened; how cinema-going as a social activity adapted from and integrated with existing social norms and practices; the extent to which Cantonese opera and other regional performance traditions were models for the development of cinematic conventions; the role foreign films played in the development of cinema as an industry in the Republican era; and much more.

Surrender: How the Clinton Administration Completed the Reagan Revolution by Michael Allen Meeropol 4.3 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 58 minutes ago

Michael Meeropol argues that the ballooning of the federal budget deficit was not a serious problem in the 1980s, nor were the successful recent efforts to get it under control the basis for the prosperous economy of the mid-1990s. In this controversial book, the author provides a close look at what actually happened to the American economy during the years of the "Reagan Revolution" and reveals that the huge deficits had no negative effect on the economy. It was the other policies of the Reagan years--high interest rates to fight inflation, supply-side tax cuts, reductions in regulation, increased advantages for investors and the wealthy, the unraveling of the safety net for the poor--that were unsuccessful in generating more rapid growth and other economic improvements. Meeropol provides compelling evidence of the failure of the U.S. economy between 1990 and 1994 to generate rising incomes for most of the population or improvements in productivity. This caused, first, the electoral repudiation of President Bush in 1992, followed by a repudiation of President Clinton in the 1994 Congressional elections. The Clinton administration made a half-hearted attempt to reverse the Reagan Revolution in economic policy, but ultimately surrendered to the Republican Congressional majority in 1996 when Clinton promised to balance the budget by 2000 and signed the welfare reform bill. The rapid growth of the economy in 1997 caused surprisingly high government revenues, a dramatic fall in the federal budget deficit, and a brief euphoria evident in an almost uncontrollable stock market boom. Finally, Meeropol argues powerfully that the next recession, certain to come before the end of 1999, will turn the predicted path to budget balance and millennial prosperity into a painful joke on the hubris of public policymakers. Accessibly written as a work of recent history and public policy as much as economics, this book is intended for all Americans interested in issues of economic ...
