The Living Part of a Legend - Vol. 1 - An Encounter of the Most Profound Kind by M.G. Hawking 4.7 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Explore a Fabled Lost World of Knowledge and Power. Legends are the relics of a shipwreck; far more of the secrets of the past have been lost than preserved. Accounts of what truly exists in our world began long after the realities had faded from human memory -- legends arose to preserve those realities. Explore the secrets underlying one of the greatest of all ancient legends, that of a hidden society of highly enlightened masters living deep in the majestic Himalayan Mountains, revealing knowledge that for long millenniums has remained hidden under the most intense silence. On an extended trek in that vast wilderness, explorer M.G. Hawking encountered a tiny village nestled below massive ice peaks, a village called Siddhalaya. There he had the privilege of meeting extraordinary men and women -- introduced to him as "masters" and "adepts" -- possessed of knowledge and powers virtually unknown to the Western world. Transcribed directly from the archived journals and field notes of Hawking's five years in the Himalayan regions of Nepal and Tibet, in this book you'll discover detailed narratives of Hawking's experiences and conversations with true masters and sages, read first-hand accounts of the psychokinetic abilities he witnessed and explore in-depth descriptions of the esoteric knowledge that make such extraordinary abilities possible. Richly enlightening and inspirational, this book is an incomparable read for anyone on a spiritual path or seeking greatly expanded knowledge and personal power. The Living Part of a Legend, Volume One, Kindle e-reader page count 407 (estimated, actual page count varies depending on the reading device you're using: Kindle reader, tablet, smartphone, laptop or desktop computer). Australia in My Notebook: Where Were You When We Did This? (Traveling the World Book 3) by Charlie Hull Price verified 7 hours ago

Charlie and Sally Hull landed in Sydney Australia and flew out to Darwin, caught the bus to Katherine and then to Timber Creek, then headed back east to Alice Springs. They flew to Melbourne and took the bus to the capital city of Canberra and then back to Sydney. From Sydney they traveled to Strathfield and Katoomba and then returned to Sydney. From Sydney they flew back to the USA. All of this was accomplished in four weeks. They walked an average of seven miles a day, meeting people and snapping photos of what they saw--crocodiles, busy streets, sunsets on the ocean, street artwork and more. At every step they encountered problems, such as broken airplanes, a visa that would not go through, a passport that was not accepted, food allergies, sun rashes, canceled hotel reservations and more. But through it all, God protected and provided for them. This is their combined journal.

Discover an Astonishing True Story Of Daring and Courage: A Real-Life Tarzan's Solo Travel Journey Across The Coral Sea Michael Fomenko is no stranger to adversity. Shut out of the Commonwealth Games for financial and political reasons at the ripe age of twenty, Michael begins to question everything. Setting a new course for himself, he dreams of a feat that will require unimaginable determination. A powerful testament to the magnitude of human courage and resilience, The King of the Coral Sea is a gripping narrative adventure that artfully recounts Michael Fomenko's legendary voyage - paddling a dugout canoe over one thousand nautical kilometres from Cairns Australia to Dutch New Guinea. Faced with gruelling physical effort, saltwater crocodiles lurking beneath the waves, and the ever-present danger of storms and jagged coral reefs, Michael never expected to encounter an additional foe: the Australian Government. Hounded by the press and victimized by a government that saw a white man living in the bush to be a threat to the social order, Michael became determined to triumph against the odds and complete his incredible feat. Told with flowing prose, vivid imagery, and larger-than-life characters, best-selling author, Robert Louis DeMayo, invites readers to join Michael on his eighteen month-long solo journey, witnessing the strength and determination that carried him through his darkest moments. Authenticity - A Memoir & A Paradigm Shift - It’s Time to Go Legit: Excellence & Coolness Decoded by Christopher Brian Fello 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Deep inside, you know something. You know that something is holding you back. Now imagine being your best self on your best day. You are about to learn how to step into that mode. (This will happen. Please do send me an email when you "get it".) This book is counterintuitive. And if you know a thing or two about counterintuitive stuff, you know that THEY WORK. - The human condition is universal. It means that each of us experiences it. In this book, I fully discuss it from my viewpoint and reference experiences. I also offer a subtle but simple solution to the human condition. There are certain events in our lives that change our perspective. Some events change it lightly, but on the other hand, a few of them changes us fundamentally, on the deepest levels. These are what we call Paradigm Shifts. My diverse collection of experiences has netted me many of these perspective altering shifts. Three of them were ultimately fundamental and has changed how I think, behave and achieve forever. I wrote about all of them, the minor but sharp as well as the major and powerful ones. My aim is for you to see it too. Hence the cover of my book is like putting on a pair of electrically charged pilot shades. That's exactly what this book is. While and after reading this book, YOU WILL FEEL DIFFERENT. Like crackling isotope good. Remember that one great day in your life when everything just clicked? You'll find it again. And you'll learn to hold it--Once you learn that, it's time to become who you're meant to be. From the moment you were born to right now, you have arrived at this moment. Cue music: Born Ready-Zayde Wolf -- In this book, you will learn how to fundamentally shift your perspective and fill in the missing elements to: • Finally Stop Caring About What Other People Think • Activate Your True Confidence • Achieve The Flow State • Unleash Your Individuality • Uncover Your True Self • Transcend The Ego • Banish Negativity • Learn to ...

Saints & Scoundrels: Colorful Characters of Arizona (Wild West History) by Julie McDonald 4.1 Stars (43 Reviews)    Price verified 43 minutes ago

I love my home state of Arizona! My family has been here for over 100 years. With some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet, it is indeed a land of color and contrast. Equally colorful are the many characters who have called Arizona home. John Shaw was killed in 1905 in a gun fight after robbing cowboys who were gambling in a saloon. He was buried where he fell and was dug up the next day by the same cowboys he robbed; to be given one last drink of whiskey. Arizona's lovable outlaw, Climax Jim, who escaped numerous prison cells. Dollie Wiley had a revolving door of husbands and her constant companions--diamonds and rat poison. Hi Jolly and his herd of camels in Western Arizona. The amazing Navajo Code Talkers and their role in World War II. The honeymoon disappearance of Glen and Bessie Hyde, and many more. Good men and bad women, bad men and good women. I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as I enjoyed writing them. Here's to FUN history!

A Thing Of Beauty: Bank of England Heist by John A. Shepherd Price verified 8 hours ago

Book 1 A Thing Of Beauty Book 2 Mr Gold I have always wanted to be a rich bitch, it didn't matter to me just how I achieved my aim, so long as I arrived in that glorious position of being able to cock-a-snoop at the world and my employer, including Victor. Foul or fair, who would care? Legal or otherwise for me would be well okay, as long as I could feel the thickness of the wedge. Here is my story, warts and all. I was safe from detection for the moment as I knew that the real reason would never really surface. The Bank of England had been so embarrassed by a few pensioners with little or no experience of such things could end up making them look so stupid, it was of course my only salvation. This had also been hushed up by the courts and most of the proceedings were conducted in camera. A matter of national security of all things, or so they said at the time. I declare that the evidence I shall give, will be the truth, the whole truth and nothing like the truth. So help me God. This publication is free from serious swear words

Thirteen Months and Thirteen Days: One WWII POW's Story by Tom Sullivan 4.2 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

"A lot has happened during these past twelve months. Things that I will remember all the rest of my life." Cpl. John Sullivan wrote these words from Stalag II B in January 1945. The worst was yet to come. Like thousands of other POWs in German controlled territory, Cpl. Sullivan would endure a forced march away from the advancing Allied Armies in brutal winter weather, with no certain prospect of shelter, food, or clean water. True to his word, he did remember his time as POW 8534. And like many Veterans of World War II he didn't share those memories often. More than a half century after the War's end, while facing the advance of Alzheimer's disease, he opened up to his son with details about his time in Italy, Austria, Germany, and the journey home to Wilmington, Del. Thirteen Months and Thirteen Days is one POW's story. His story.

Born into New China (Spring Grass Book 1) by Qiyin Emurian 4.0 Stars (19 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Born into New China (Spring Grass Book 1) covers the period of my life from early childhood to a teenager experiencing the beginning of the violence and uncertainty unleashed by the Cultural Revolution. I began my journey as a spirited child in a well-to-do family in Shanghai. The day I started primary school, I learned that my first name, Qiyin, meant spring grass in Chinese, blessing me to be like grass, not as charming as flowers but always alive and thriving. I became unusually bold for a girl. The book reveals the gradual changes to my life and to the lives of my family and friends as Mao Zedong issued directives for New China. With the start of the Cultural Revolution, my older brother and I, both ardent believers in Mao's words and policies, joined the Red Guards to sweep away all vestiges of capitalism and the Four Olds: Old Customs, Old Culture, Old Habits, and Old Ideas. I found myself with the power to make life-altering decisions about the lives of suspected traitors to the cause of class struggle, all the while a naïve teenager coping with the issues of adolescence.

The 'artist' dream remains exactly that. Spice is making HMP Broadhurst impossible to police. Greg is a loser. Kids? Yeah, right. No wonder prison officer Charlotte Croft is beginning to feel like she is the one who is incarcerated. But a close friend reminds her: Doves aren't meant to be caged. And unlike him, she's on the right side of the bars. Charlotte's barely had chance to spread her wings when the violent attack on her brother crash lands her into lawyer Vinny's life. Yet, nothing is going to stop her. Not the intense connection they share. Not when he has a wife. Not the fact her prison life and his top case are linked. Not how she's left questioning who else is corrupt. Not even a broken heart. About the only thing Charlotte Croft is now sure of is this: she only has one life... and she is going to live it. But everything has a price, even freedom. Just how much will she pay for hers? Jailbird will have you turning from the first page to the last. M & Dee: A Wanderlust Love Story, based on True Events. by Marianne Madson 4.1 Stars (26 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

"Have I become a ghost? All I hear is divorcee, adulteress whispered behind my back while you get high fives. Dee please tell me, you never told anyone... about Sam." The book blurb is from M and Dee, my groovy early seventies pop culture memoir. The reviews describe M and Dee as an authentic 70s sounding groovy read, which it should because it really happened. So, with that said, instead of me describing the book, below is what the readers have said about M and Dee. "Ah, the 70s. This book captures well the free spirited, hitch-hiking, back-packing, train riding, grass smoking, free loving, relationship developing era of the early to mid-70's. The story contains humor, insights, quirks, and romance, but in the end it is a tragedy of the most unusual kind. Don't try to figure out the ending. You can't." "Groovy Baby, the characters developed nicely and it really had a good vibe to it and the language was very authentic." "A modern day retelling of the classic star-crossed lovers tale." "I loved this story and really got into the groovy 70s scene which was so which was so poignantly depicted." Great wanderlust read. A bit of a sore throat: Throat cancer and its treatment: a patient's perspective. by Robert Leslie 4.2 Stars (24 Reviews)    Price verified 43 minutes ago

A patient's perspective on throat cancer and its treatment. I don't know your reason for looking at my book, but before going any further, I do hope it's not because you or a person close to you has cancer; it's a horrible disease. My story is about my own experience of stage 4 throat cancer and what I have learned by researching - I'm not an expert; this isn't a medical textbook and my description won't necessarily match how things go for other people, but it should give you some insight and forewarning of what to expect. Some of it was frustrating, some painful and surprisingly other parts which went far better than I expected. This book is what I would have been very happy to read before the start of my encounter with cancer. Despite the serious nature of the topic, I think you'll find plenty of moments which make you laugh. A review 5.0 out of 5 stars Highly readable and humorous medical memoir "I'm giving this book five stars because the subject is so important and because I loved the writing. Yes, it's a medical memoir; but much more than that. One of the first section headings is: 'Warning: this book may contain jokes.' I didn't expect that, given the subject matter, but Mr Leslie does not disappoint. There are many laugh-out-loud moments. This memoir of a serious health condition comes from an observant and witty raconteur, despite the distress he suffers from his diagnosis and treatment. Leslie, who constantly asks questions and does not accept pat responses, makes clear his debt to the NHS. This despite the occasional inefficiencies he points out. Between the jokes and the medical memoir there were good suggestions about ways the administration of the NHS might be improved; how to reduce the number of late diagnoses. Best of all is his take on how to read the reviews of hospitals and cancer services because nowadays we have more choice than heretofore; and more than most people realise. And he has ideas on how the NHS might persuade more patients ...

After the Fire: Finding Life Again Within the Burn Scar (California Jackson Butte Fire 2015) by N M Reed 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 9 hours ago

After the Fire: finding life again in the burn scar. The Butte Fire Re-population, follow-up to Home Is Where the Horse Is: Surviving the Jackson Butte Fire Evacuation The follow up story of the Jackson Butte Fire disaster, "Home is Where the Horse Is: Surviving the Jackson Butte Fire Evacuation of 2015". When the fire broke out on September 10th 2015, the author was forced to evacuate her ranch in the woods and try to take as many of her animals and possessions with her in the 15 minutes provided by the county sheriff. The evacuation itself was a disaster. But the follow-up story is heart breaking. A week to week journal of all that happened between re-population and the final settlement with the power company 2 1/2 years later, the story unfolds like a bad adventure novel. Everything seems to go wrong, from illegal tree poaching to gun fights and running for their lives. But the author lives to tell the tale, of bare earth and flooding rain and mud slides, to the ground turning green again with over-abundant brush and grass growth. Horses escape, and the feral cat finds her way back outside, even without her feet. An amazing often hair-raising, and sometimes heartening tale of survival and persevering against all odds in the burnt out wilderness of Calaveras county, California after the Butte Fire disaster of 2015, when 74 thousand acres were blackened in a matter of hours and lives were shattered or lost.

Lionel Messi : FIFA world cup Qatar 2022: The amazing story of the boy who became a legend by Javier jurado Alvarez 3.8 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 43 minutes ago

"If I wasn't paid to be a professional footballer, I would willingly play for nothing." - Lionel Messi. The idea that a young man from Argentina standing five feet seven inches tall might develop into the best soccer player in the world defies sense. A person who has been diagnosed with growth hormone insufficiency and lacks the financial means to pay for the costly treatment to address that disease would also not be the best prospect to succeed players like Diego Maradona, Ronaldo, or Pelé in the title of "World's Best." But Lionel Messi consistently defies reason ever since he joined his first soccer squad at the age of four. In this book, Lionel Messi's journey from his modest origins in a small hamlet in Argentina to his record-breaking fifth Ballon D'Or award will be chronicled. We won't believe that Messi merely inherited a plethora of natural talent, despite the temptation being great. Instead, we will go back and examine the steps that he took to become, without a doubt, the greatest player in the annals of soccer. Everything you need to know about Messi, from his early years to his world-record-setting performances on the field, is provided here. It's Me or the Horse: Family, Friendship, Dogs, Divorce, Narcissists, Healing and the Chestnut Mare who gave me voice. by Wiley Davis 4.1 Stars (21 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

"I want you to stop horseback riding so that I don't have to work, and I can focus on writing my screenplay," my husband said at the celebration dinner for my new six-figure job. I had worked for months to get the offer, and it would finally allow me to take horseback riding lessons at the little farm up Topanga Canyon more than once a week. I had been aching to get back in the saddle, something I loved throughout my lifetime. Chad was a writer, director, and producer for reality TV, and I had a modest-paying job in content marketing. We lived a simple life in Santa Monica, but my new career changed everything. "You've married the wrong girl." I thought to myself but didn't dare say out of fear of the temper for which he held a reputation. It was never about the horse. It was the question of what I was willing to give up for an idea of us. It was the fallout if I betrayed the half-truths, mistruths, and denials that I grew up with and accepted as a good "Preacher's Kid". This was my breaking point and I had a choice. Lose me... or lose the horse. This is my story of the friendships and animals who helped me find my voice and the courage to heal. This book contains explicit material, including language, and sexual situations, and is suitable for adults. Reader discretion is advised.

The Real Napoleon - The Untold Story by John Tarttelin (A SOULADREAM PRODUCTION) 3.7 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

THE REAL NAPOLEON - The Untold Story "An impressive and powerful piece of work" - Rupert Heath, literary agent. "Fresh and convincing" Andrew Lownie, literary agent. "Many thanks for this, which I found fascinating and very much enjoyed reading - despite the fact, or perhaps precisely because, it debunks many of my own long-held opinions about Napoleon... you do write nicely, with great passion and in a compelling style... I'm perfectly happy with the premise that British history has tarnished Napoleon unfairly... " Robin Wade, literary agent. "Passionately argued - a book you must read" Jean-Claude Damamme, French historian. In this book Napoleon is shown for what and who he was and not as the caricature described by many bigoted 'historians', especially of the British persuasion. He was not short, he was often generous and he seldom forgot a friend, particularly those from his early days before he was famous. France was attacked in 1802, 1805, 1806, 1807, 1809 and 1814 - yet it is always Napoleon who is blamed for the so-called Napoleonic Wars, a misnomer if ever there was one. England with a mad King, a Prime Minister who was pickled in port, a Foreign Secretary who killed himself and a Prince Regent addicted to laudanum and alcohol - too umbrage that a genius across the Channel was ruling a country that had been Britain's enemy for decades. Napoleon, in the words of Napier - who served with British forces in the Peninsular and who was regarded as the finest historian of his day - was seen as the epitomization of the democratic forces that were swirling around Europe as a result of the American and French Revolutions. Hence the British Establishment wanted him destroyed at all costs. Thus millions in gold left the Bank of England to pay for Austrian and Russian armies to attack France. Even worse secret payments were made to assassins working for the Comte d'Artois, Louis XIII's infamous sibling, in order for attempts to be made on Napoleon's life. William ...

Stopping Napoleon : War and intrigue in the Mediterranean by Tom Pocock 4.1 Stars (94 Reviews)    Price verified 34 minutes ago

Following the Battle of Trafalgar, Britain had one objective: stopping Napoleon at all costs... After his defeat by Nelson at Trafalgar, Napoleon knew he could never invade England. Many thought he would try to take over the vast, crumbling Ottoman Empire, return to Egypt and even march on India. So the British concentrated on the Mediterranean: for a decade it became the scene of dangers, real or imagined, and of battles both on land and at sea. All was dictated by a fierce determination to stop Napoleon. Stopping Napoleon is a fast-paced, beautifully written account that should be read by all aficionados of the age of Nelson and Napoleon. Praise for Tom Pocock: 'Pocock has restored this neglected campaign to its true importance in this lively and important book' - Sunday Times 'Compendiously detailed, expert analysis... No detail escapes Mr Pocock' - The Spectator 'An enthralling read' - Brighton Argus Tom Pocock was the author of eighteen books (and editor of two more), mostly biographies but including two about his experiences as a newspaper war correspondent. Born in London in 1925, he was educated at Westminster School and Cheltenham College, joining the Royal Navy in 1943. He has contributed to many magazines and appeared on television documentaries about Nelson and the subject of another of his biographies, the novelist and imperialist Sir Rider Haggard.

There are many reasons why including strict gun laws in these countries, violent criminal gangs use guns, drug traffickers looking to protect their territories with high-power weapons, and gun trafficking itself is lucrative. It is very easy in the United States to purchase firearms at gun dealers (FFL), private sales, gun shows, flea markets and online. Many criminal organizations have individuals in the United States purchase large amounts of firearms later to be smuggled by land, air or sea from the U.S. to their nation. American firearms and ammunition are well made plus the United States has many imported firearms from other countries. Armed drug trafficking and the surge in violence in these nations is leading to an arms race between gangs and cartels in our hemisphere. The brutal violence in these nations will only impact the U.S. with more crime, more illegals and more drugs. This vicious cycle will never stop unless these crime syndicates are permanently dismantled while also dealing with the gripping drug addiction of millions in the United States and around the world.

Apologizing For Vietnam by Lisa Lieberman (Passport Press) 3.5 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

Shattered by the suicide of her cousin Allen, a Vietnam veteran, Lisa Lieberman embarked on a journey of understanding, reading memoirs and historical accounts of the Vietnam war in an effort to make sense of a war she'd only experienced second hand. Drafted in 1968, Allen served with the 4th Psychological Operations Group (PSYOP) at Tan Son Nhut airport, its Saigon headquarters. The unit came under heavy fire during PSYOP missions and Allen saw many of his comrades die. He shot himself in April 2002, six months after the US invasion of Afghanistan. Lieberman's reflections on Vietnam and on the moral injuries suffered by combatants like her cousin give all of us something to think about as the US teeters on the brink of another deadly war.

Academy Award Winning Sisters: The Lives of Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine by Charles River Editors 3.6 Stars (127 Reviews)    Price verified one minute ago

*Includes pictures. *Includes both actresses' quotes about each other and their careers. *Includes a bibliography for further reading. *Includes a table of contents. "Famous people feel that they must perpetually be on the crest of the wave, not realising that it is against all the rules of life. You can't be on top all the time, it isn't natural." - Olivia de Havilland "You know, I've had a helluva life. Not just the acting part. I've flown in an international balloon race. I've piloted my own plane. I've ridden to the hounds. I've done a lot of exciting things." - Joan Fontaine Olivia de Havilland is one of the last few living actresses who worked during the Golden Era of Hollywood, but also one of the most decorated, winning dozens of awards over the course of a 50 year career. Among those, she most notably won the Academy Award for Best Actress for To Each His Own (1946) and The Heiress (1949), more than a decade after she got her start as an 18 year old in Hollywood. Ironically, de Havilland was in California in part because the young British girl who had been born in Tokyo stopped in the States for medical treatment. Of course, de Havilland isn't well remembered for any of those accolades or other movies but because she played Melanie Hamilton in Gone With the Wind (1939), perhaps the most famous movie in American history. Although she was a veteran actress at the time, de Havilland's career hadn't progressed much since she started, and rumor has it that she eventually got the role after her own sister, Joan Fontaine, was asked to audition for the part and recommended Olivia instead. Olivia was ultimately nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and became a household name in her adopted country overnight. Having been typecast in light romantic comedies before Gone With the Wind, that performance ensured de Havilland subsequently had a long, productive and versatile career making everything from Westerns and dramas. Of those movies, ...

American Legends: The Life of Rock Hudson by Charles River Editors 3.5 Stars (140 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

*Includes pictures. *Includes Hudson's own quotes about his life and career. *Includes a bibliography for further reading. *Includes a table of contents. "I'm notorious for giving a bad interview. I'm an actor and I can't help but feel I'm boring when I'm on as myself." - Rock Hudson A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. In the middle of the 20th century, there was perhaps no leading man as famous and popular as Rock Hudson, who would star in both comedies and dramas on the way to being named one of the Top 10 Stars of the Year for eight years straight (1957-1964). Whether he was starring in a comedy with Doris Day or in a drama opposite Elizabeth Taylor, the tall, impeccably dressed actor couldn't help but make girls in the audience swoon, and he was recognized as one of Hollywood's biggest heartthrobs. The success of his peak years ensured that Hudson would remain a star over the course of 4 decades, and he appeared in about 70 films during his career. Today, however, Rock Hudson might be better known among contemporary audiences for his personal life. Acting in a more conservative era, Hudson struggled to keep his homosexuality out of the news for fear it would destroy his career, even though many of his Hollywood contemporaries were aware of it. After Hudson died of AIDS in 1985, perhaps the first major celebrity to die of the disease, details of his personal life began to be publicized, sometimes amidst messy legal battles. It soon became clear just what kind of pains Hudson took to keep his personal life private, and his friendships with men were highly scrutinized, as was his marriage to his agent's secretary, ...

The Survivor's Song: Under the Hammer and Sickle - Budapest to Montreal by Andrew Fodor 4.0 Stars (10 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

The first book of this two-volume series (Unarmed Soldiers: Budapest to Stalingrad and back) follows the author's three-years on the road with the Hungarian forced labor battalions during WWII, taking him from Budapest to the area of Stalingrad. Armed with only his wits, a smattering of courage, some unexpected help and lots of luck, he survived the brutal conditions with his joie de vivre and sense of humor intact. He had simply not allowed the fascists to break his spirit in the time of war, and, as he demonstrates in this volume, he certainly wasn't going to let the incompetent post-war communists do so either. In this volume, continuing to use the skill and inventiveness that helped him survive the war, he dabbles in forgery, distilling illegal liquor, commercial art, music, journalism, accountancy and much literary ado before finally realizing that the Great People's Republic didn't really need his expertise in order to make stupid decisions about the freshly-minted communist economy. These two books form a continuous stream but divide quite naturally into two sections, just as the history of Hungary did during and after the war. The reader should be aware that the events described at the beginning of this volume occur on the very next day after the previous book ends. Nevertheless, the two volumes can be read independently.

Toussaint L'Ouverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines: The History and Legacy of the Haitian Revolution’s Most Famous Leaders by Charles River Editors 4.2 Stars (34 Reviews)    Price verified 34 minutes ago

*Includes pictures *Includes a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "I was born a slave, but nature gave me a soul of a free man... " - Toussaint L'Ouverture The island of Hispaniola is the second largest island in the Antilles chain behind Cuba, and host to the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. Haiti, however, covering the western third of the island, is a French-speaking territory while the Dominican Republic, which occupies the other two thirds, is a Spanish-speaking territory. The Dominican Republic, although classified as a developing nation, has never been struck to the same degree by the malaise of poverty, corruption of its neighbor, languishing in the lower ten percent of nations ahead only of some of the most conspicuous failed states in Africa. Many historians and analysts have posed the question of why, and the answer seems to lie in Haiti's uniquely tortured history. Hispaniola entered the European record in 1492 when Christopher Columbus made landfall on its southern shore during his first trans-Atlantic voyage, and he named his discovery in honor of the Spanish Crown that had funded and sponsored the voyage. Leaving the crew of the wrecked Santa Maria on the island, he returned to Europe, leaving his men to establish the foundations of the settlement of La Navidad and the first beachhead of the European seizure of the Caribbean and the New World. Columbus would revisit the island three times, leading a vanguard of pioneer colonists to commence the exploitation of the New World. The indigenous people of Hispaniola, the Tainos and Arawak, initially greeted the landing with ambivalence, but as more and more of them were enslaved, and as their country was occupied, they entered a period of precipitous decline. Through a combination of disease, the violence associated with enslavement and general assimilation, they had virtually disappeared from the landscape within a century. In the meanwhile, as the ...

It's Not For Everyone by Rick Brindle (Amazon) 4.2 Stars (28 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

What do you do when your dream job turns into a nightmare? Rick Brindle was a third generation military child. His father and grandfather served their whole lives in the Army, and all he wanted to do was be a soldier. In 1989 he joined the RAF Regiment. But life in the Regiment was a world away from what he thought it would be, and it quickly became toxic. Facing a culture of bullying, beatings, verbal abuse and sexual harassment, the community he wanted to be a part of became more like a prison. Most people around him went along with the abuse. Some agreed with it, some joined in, while the chain of command routinely looked the other way. Set over thirty years ago, this is a story of surviving abuse that still resonates today. It's Not For Everyone is essential reading for anyone considering a military career. Sometimes funny, sometimes shocking, and sometimes sickening, it's one person's unprecedented true story of life in the RAF Regiment.

Nine Lives: Drunk Stoned and Stupid / Happy Joyous and Free by Bob Huppert 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 43 minutes ago

Nine Lives is the brutally honest journey of one man's journey from the Hell that is drug and alcohol addiction (Drunk Stoned & Stupid) to a life free from bondage (Happy Joyous & Free.) Randy called. That's possibly the hardest step to take toward recovery, reaching out for help. Randy had been driving around with a loaded revolver in his lap, trying to gather the courage to park somewhere and end his pain. Permanently. So why not make one last call? The details of the call don't matter. The only thing a man in that situation hears is, "I know how you feel. I felt that way myself." And he KNEW that I knew. It wasn't just "I feel your pain" bullshit. All my years of pain and destruction finally had a purpose, a reason, a meaning. "We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it." I finally understood. I had something to offer Randy that no one else in his life could offer. No one but another cocaine addict who had been through the whole nightmare and came out the other side could say or do anything that would have any effect on him. We talked for a long time, trading horror stories. 'I'll tell you my worst fuck-up if you tell me yours.'

In the spring of 2008, Coalition troops responded in-force to what quickly became one of the largest, bloodiest and most influential battles of the Iraq War. For nearly three months, American and Iraqi forces fought a vicious battle over the most densely populated district of Baghdad, against a ruthless and well-organized insurgent militia known as the Jaish al-Mahdi. Sgt. Ludwig's gripping narrative offers an unfiltered view of the Final Battle of Sadr City through the unforgiving sights of his machine gun. Eager to test his mettle and make a difference in the world, he enlists with the United States Army as an infantryman and gets assigned to a tight-knit unit of hardened veterans known as "Bull Company." Having already fought in the battles of Fallujah and Mosul, Bull Company embarks on a 15-month combat deployment to the front lines of Sadr City -- which culminates in a brutal mission to push deep behind enemy lines, capture a well-guarded militia stronghold, and hold their ground "for as long as it takes."

The Master of Suspense: The Life and Legacy of Alfred Hitchcock by Charles River Editors 3.7 Stars (65 Reviews)    Price verified 34 minutes ago

*Includes pictures. *Includes Hitchcock's quotes about directing and explains the key themes and techniques associated with his films. *Includes a bibliography for further reading. *Includes a table of contents. "I am a typed director. If I made Cinderella, the audience would immediately be looking for a body in the coach." - Alfred Hitchcock, 1956 In the opening pages of his seminal book-length study of Alfred Hitchcock, Hitchcock's Films (1965), Robin Wood famously asked, "Why Should We Take Hitchcock Seriously?" Wood then proceeded to offer a detailed examination of Hitchcock's career to that point, arguing that the Master of Suspense belonged among the ranks of the preeminent directors in Hollywood, and that his films were among the most important in American culture. When Wood was asking that question, he wasn't asking it rhetorically and was arguing for Hitchcock's relevance, which seems strange today because Hitchcock is now a Hollywood icon. No one would even think of asking that same question today, as just about every American is familiar with Hitchcock's work in some way or another. Hitchcock is regarded as perhaps the most famous and influential director in history, so Wood's question back in 1965 at least demonstrates the evolution of Hitchcock's reputation and the critical reception of his career. Indeed, as revered as Hitchcock is today, it is telling that he was never awarded an Academy Award during his career (though he was given an honorary Oscar after his retirement.) Vertigo (1958), for example, is now considered one of the landmark films of the classical Hollywood cinema, but it was both a box office and a critical flop upon its release. Other Hitchcock films, such as Psycho (1960) and North by Northwest (1959), performed well at the box office but were not viewed as high art. Indeed, it was not until the rise of Film Studies as an academic discipline - a development that saw Hitchcock's films get co-opted by scholars of the horror and ...

ROOSEVELT AND CHURCHILL men of secrets (David Stafford World War II History) by David Stafford (Lume Books WW2 Non-Fiction History, A Joffe Books Company) 4.4 Stars (84 Reviews)    Price verified 34 minutes ago

A THOROUGH EXAMINATION OF THE VITAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TWO OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT STATESMEN DURING WORLD WAR TWO. 'However much they valued their special relationship, neither man allowed it to trump national goals. David Stafford's fascinating book is a useful reminder of how complicated the Grand Alliance actually was.' New York Times 'An intriguing book which makes a very good read.' Irish Independent 'A swift, well-documented assessment of the relationship's "volatile mix of friendship, rivalry and resentment".' Kirkus Reviews 'Much of this book upsets accepted views... Stafford has the precious gift of making technical subjects easy to follow; he writes clearly, and maintains a strong narrative flow. This is most readable history.' The Sunday Times Roosevelt and Churchill were titans of the twentieth century with a unique relationship. It was based on interlinked national histories, partially shared nationality (Churchill was half-American), love for the navy and a common belief in the superiority of Anglo-Saxon institutions. Above all, it was cemented by shared enemies: Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. On these foundations, Churchill and Roosevelt constructed a fighting alliance unlike any other in history. A Combined Chiefs of Staff, Anglo-American war-making boards, and an atomic alliance helped to deliver victory in 1945. The two men also developed an extraordinary personal relationship, communicating almost daily. Their camaraderie ended abruptly with Roosevelt's death on 12 April 1945, just hours before American and British troops liberated Buchenwald and Belsen. At the heart of this special relationship, hidden by layers of secrecy, was a far-reaching sharing of intelligence which would endure well beyond their own premierships. In this fascinating account, David Stafford draws on declassified information and his own specialist understanding of intelligence to illuminate the relationship between two men who, as leaders and allies, were ...

The Three Wives of Adoniram Judson: Ann Hasseltine, Sarah Hall Boardman, Emily Chubbuck aka Fanny Forrester (Missionary Biographies) by Julie McDonald 4.4 Stars (17 Reviews)    Price verified 43 minutes ago

While researching and writing, Adoniram Judson, America's First Foreign Missionary, I became very frustrated. The book was already longer than my normal 15-20 page, 30 minute read. How could I possible honor his three wives, keep the narrative running smoothly and not confuse the reader with too many characters? I came up with, what I hope, is a great idea! I decided to do an entirely separate book, featuring each one of Adoniram's amazing wives, her early background, and individual story. I really enjoyed being able to give each woman the respect due her. Each one played a major role in reaching the people of Burma, as well as inspiring many young women to follow in her footsteps, to go to unreached people groups around the world.

This classic study profiles serial killers, gentleman murderers, and every stripe of madman in between Benjamin Pitezel should never have trusted H. H. Holmes. In 1894, the two men conspired to fake Pitezel's death for the sake of a $10,000 insurance settlement. But Holmes decided murder would be simpler. He killed his partner, kidnapped three of his children, and tried to claim the insurance money as his own. The scheme unraveled and Holmes killed the children as well. When he was caught, the police had no idea they had captured one of the vilest murderers in American history. The Pitezel murders were only the tip of a very bloody iceberg. The chilling case of H. Irving understood the public's lurid fascination with murder, and in this seminal study he shows readers the many faces of evil.

His deep and original expositions of various aspects of Sikhism (more than 30 books) are a lasting contribution to Sikh theology, philosophy and mysticism. He distinguished himself in Punjabi prose and poetry by an erudite and powerful grand style of his own.
