A bit of a sore throat: Throat cancer and its treatment: a patient's perspective. by Robert Leslie 4.2 Stars (24 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

A patient's perspective on throat cancer and its treatment. I don't know your reason for looking at my book, but before going any further, I do hope it's not because you or a person close to you has cancer; it's a horrible disease. My story is about my own experience of stage 4 throat cancer and what I have learned by researching - I'm not an expert; this isn't a medical textbook and my description won't necessarily match how things go for other people, but it should give you some insight and forewarning of what to expect. Some of it was frustrating, some painful and surprisingly other parts which went far better than I expected. This book is what I would have been very happy to read before the start of my encounter with cancer. Despite the serious nature of the topic, I think you'll find plenty of moments which make you laugh. A review 5.0 out of 5 stars Highly readable and humorous medical memoir "I'm giving this book five stars because the subject is so important and because I loved the writing. Yes, it's a medical memoir; but much more than that. One of the first section headings is: 'Warning: this book may contain jokes.' I didn't expect that, given the subject matter, but Mr Leslie does not disappoint. There are many laugh-out-loud moments. This memoir of a serious health condition comes from an observant and witty raconteur, despite the distress he suffers from his diagnosis and treatment. Leslie, who constantly asks questions and does not accept pat responses, makes clear his debt to the NHS. This despite the occasional inefficiencies he points out. Between the jokes and the medical memoir there were good suggestions about ways the administration of the NHS might be improved; how to reduce the number of late diagnoses. Best of all is his take on how to read the reviews of hospitals and cancer services because nowadays we have more choice than heretofore; and more than most people realise. And he has ideas on how the NHS might persuade more patients ...

I RAN THE WORLD: If you could change the world, would you? by Chris Long 4.9 Stars (13 Reviews)    Price verified 15 hours ago

'Astonishing mix of inspiration, famous names, connections and heart breaking honesty of one man's desire to make the world listen, take notice and help change the world for the better.' Reader review 'I could not put this book down. I laughed, cried and was amazed in equal measure.' Reader review 'Read this from cover to cover in one sitting!! Can't believe this was 35 years ago, feels like yesterday! An amazing story of the biggest mass participation event in history - EVER - to raise money for the starving in Africa.' Reader review A truly remarkable and inspiring memoir by the man who founded and organised the largest mass participation demonstration the world has even seen. Inspired by Bob Geldof, Band Aid and Live Aid, Chris Long organised his game-changing event 35 years ago, before the internet, mobile phones and social media. Sport Aid and Run the World was huge and captured the imagination of Politicians, Heads of State, Royalty, Celebrities, Sports Stars and 19.8 million people in 89 countries. The event raised £32 million for charity and pressurised governments into cancelling US$150 million of African debt. This fascinating and racy memoir reveals the triumphs and tragedies behind that turbulent time. How he imitated Bob Geldof to ensure Birmingham's Olympic bid team got on board, convinced the head of UNICEF to partner Geldof and the Band Aid Trust, met Prince Charles and Princess Diana at Buckingham Palace and took tea with Margaret Thatcher at Number Ten Downing Street - not to mention how close he came to committing suicide along the way. Chris agonised over writing his book for three decades: laying bare the exultation, high notes and happiness behind his superhuman achievement; tempered with the blood, sweat, tears, depression and despair when it all came tumbling down. But he decided too many people were ignoring the current crises - climate change, the population explosion, the ongoing agony of refugees fleeing religious and ideological ...

After the Fire: Finding Life Again Within the Burn Scar (California Jackson Butte Fire 2015) by N M Reed 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 16 hours ago

After the Fire: finding life again in the burn scar. The Butte Fire Re-population, follow-up to Home Is Where the Horse Is: Surviving the Jackson Butte Fire Evacuation The follow up story of the Jackson Butte Fire disaster, "Home is Where the Horse Is: Surviving the Jackson Butte Fire Evacuation of 2015". When the fire broke out on September 10th 2015, the author was forced to evacuate her ranch in the woods and try to take as many of her animals and possessions with her in the 15 minutes provided by the county sheriff. The evacuation itself was a disaster. But the follow-up story is heart breaking. A week to week journal of all that happened between re-population and the final settlement with the power company 2 1/2 years later, the story unfolds like a bad adventure novel. Everything seems to go wrong, from illegal tree poaching to gun fights and running for their lives. But the author lives to tell the tale, of bare earth and flooding rain and mud slides, to the ground turning green again with over-abundant brush and grass growth. Horses escape, and the feral cat finds her way back outside, even without her feet. An amazing often hair-raising, and sometimes heartening tale of survival and persevering against all odds in the burnt out wilderness of Calaveras county, California after the Butte Fire disaster of 2015, when 74 thousand acres were blackened in a matter of hours and lives were shattered or lost.

The Claimant: Butcher or Baronet? by Paul Terry 4.6 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 13 hours ago

It's 1866 and from the dusty frontier town of Wagga Wagga comes a man who sets Victorian Britain alight - the likes of which have never been seen before or since. It's a tale so preposterous that it's still debated today. Tom Castro - or was he Arthur Orton? - an obese, toothless butcher who lives in a slab hut, suddenly comes forward and claims to be Roger Tichborne, the rightful Baronet of Tichborne Park, Hampshire, and head of one of England's oldest noble families. Incredibly, Roger's mother agrees. So sets in motion a journey that takes our Claimant on a rollercoaster ride of fame, glory, prison and penury, unleashes a 12th century curse, disturbs Queen Victoria, delights Mark Twain, immortalises our Claimant in wax at Madame Tussaud's, and strikes at the very heart of the English class system. And, at the end of a tumultuous life, a strange posthumous victory to the Claimant leads some to still ask - was he Roger Tichborne, a baronet, or Arthur Orton, a butcher?
