The Crusades: From Byzantium to Islam and then the State of Israel by Nehal Kaur Price verified 5 hours ago

In a world where fantasy novels captivate our imagination with tales of knights, castles, and epic battles, one might wonder: who needs fiction when history itself offers stories just as enthralling? Welcome to the saga of the Crusades, a series of religious wars that spanned centuries and changed the course of history forever. This book aims to take you on a journey back in time, to an era where the clashing of swords echoed across holy lands, and where the destinies of empires were rewritten by the hands of both the valiant and the villainous. As we delve into this complex tapestry, we will explore the intricate dynamics between the Christian and Muslim worlds, each with its own set of belligerents, strategies, and goals. You'll meet historical characters like Richard the Lionheart, whose courage became the stuff of legends, and Saladin, the Muslim general whose chivalry won the admiration of even his enemies. We'll scrutinize the motivations that fueled these monumental expeditions, from the devout to the downright opportunistic. But this is not just a tale of kings and warriors. We'll also shed light on the common soldiers, the footmen and archers, who left their homes with dreams of glory or salvation, often to face unimaginable hardships. Through their eyes, you'll witness battles of enormous scale, where the quality and size of armies could turn the tide in unexpected ways. So, young scholars and curious adults alike, prepare to be enlightened. The Crusades await, and as you'll soon discover, they are as riveting as any tale ever conjured by the human imagination. In our next chapter, we'll set the stage for the First Crusade, a campaign that promised salvation but delivered a labyrinth of moral complexities. Are you ready?

Planet X Nibiru is a hypothetical planetary body/star of enormous size that is supposedly on track for a near miss or collision with earth resulting in a doomsday tribulation. A reversal of the poles, referred to as a pole shift would occur due to its influence on the orbits of the planets in our inner solar system, interference disruptions within the asteroid belt, and the gravitational pull it would exert upon the earth. According to ancient Sumerian texts and myths, a race of aliens named the Anunnaki, from the planet Nibiru forewarned of its arrival resulting in a devastating global cataclysm in which 90% of the world's population will perish. This book examines the origins and characteristics of Planet X, earth changes, the pole shift, the Hopi Blue Star and Red Star Kachina prophecies, the most prominent conspiracy theories, and the biblical perspective to the Wormwood star. In addition, it addresses the global elite, The New World Order, preparations that are currently in progress to herald in this proposed apocalyptic event.

The Sailor King: The life of King William IV by Tom Pocock 4.3 Stars (46 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Of all the British monarchs who have claimed they ruled the seas, just one, King William IV, has been a truly professional seafarer. Known as the 'Sailor King' in his own lifetime, he saw himself as a naval officer who happened to become the sovereign, rather than a monarch who had been a naval officer. His life - here told as a whole, rather than dominated by his short reign - presents an appealing, if sometimes shocking, personality. William bounds from these pages like a character from an historical novel, albeit comic rather than heroic; from Captain Marryat rather than C. S. Forester. His career in the Royal Navy was fraught with crisis: rivalries, doomed love affairs, extravagance and rebelliousness. Often, he seems a Hogarthian character, or a nautical version of the Regency rake. Yet, while many mocked or despised him, some loved him. Overcoming the pressures and contradictions of a royal upbringing, William ended his days as a king who was not only loved but admired for setting an unstable monarchy on an even keel for the long reign of his niece, Victoria. Praise for The Sailor King: 'It is an excellent book and sheds a lot of light on the person of an easily neglected King. This proved an enjoyable reading experience and is recommended' - Amazon review Tom Pocock (1925-2007) served in the Royal Navy during World War II and became a war correspondent at just 19 years old. His career in journalism flourished and he ultimately became naval correspondent for both the Daily Mail and The Times. He wrote and edited a number of books and is particularly respected for his works on the life and times of Lord Nelson.

Why Did He Bother?: A Pastor's Account of God's Abundant Mercy, Love, and Grace by Allen Bujno 4.6 Stars (44 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

This is a unique, humorous, inspirational, encouraging, faith-building, faith-challenging story of endurance, perseverance, and reconciliation. It will make you laugh and it will make you think. Why does God bother to do the things He does in our lives? Why doesn't He just let us keep believing what we were believing, keep doing the things we were doing, continually making mistakes and using bad judgment? I believe God puts people into our lives on purpose; To strengthen us, to encourage us, to teach us, to correct us, to stop us and to point us in the right direction so we can become who we are and all we were created to be. The following stories are an attempt to show the extraordinary lengths the Lord went through, the situations I encountered, the people whose paths crossed my life and the key, often humorous, moments that occurred to teach me, to correct me, to stop me or point me in the right direction. People kept telling me to wtite these stories down. Well, I finally have.

30 Reasons Why I am Great: How to Boost Self-Esteem Via Unusual Confession (UnBrokable*) by Brad Kong 1.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 8 hours ago

Free speech, right? No one seems to know how great I am, so I decided to write about it myself. My wife called me mini-Trump the other day; I was bragging about how decent a human being I am and told her my plan to write a book about it. We all know it's hard to be modest. Simultaneously, it is true that humans have desires to win respect; deep inside, we all are eager for more credits and admiration. Conversely, I learned that it's more difficult to get those nowadays, especially from ourselves. After the emergence of social media, comparing ourselves with those in the top-tier has been our daily lives. While we do not notice, we have a tendency to feel inferior more and more every day. But the truth is probably you and I are good enough or, furthermore, a few of us may be substantial.

Foundling by Linda Hope 4.4 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 24 minutes ago

I decided to call my book "Foundling" (an infant found abandoned) because this word has haunted me throughout my life. I am a foundling. All my life, I have been haunted by such feelings as defenselessness, loneliness, fear, hunger, a cold bed, and having no one around to tell you "I love you," no one around to give you advice, or protect you. Over time, I stopped thinking about all these feelings; I just got used to living without them. I learned to hide my tears; I forgot what joy and smiles were. You will meet a girl who finds it difficult to be a child, who does not know what love of trust and happiness are. How hard it is for this girl to understand and forgive her mother and her father when they finally decided to appear in her life. Over time, I realized that I was missing three common senses: 1. That someone to hug you wholeheartedly. 2. That someone to kiss you from the bottom of their heart. 3. That someone to tell you I love you. And only after that, do you begin to believe in yourself, hopes for your happy future, and of course, love those who helped you understand these three feelings. It's so scary to be foundling. If I write one thousand books about it, I will not be able to describe all the problems I have, all the hurtful feelings I experienced. In this book, I put 50% of the truth, and the second half of the book consists of my dreams of a happy life. If I wrote only the truth in this book, everyone who is reading it would have only one question: How is this possible? In Russia we have a proverb: "Where you were born, there you will be useful." Do not believe in this, look for the place that will bring you happiness and love. Every person has such a place, it just needs to be found. Such a short word, life, but it contains so many feelings of experiences that when describing only one day, you could write a whole book. Believe me, I've known a few of such days, so I have to share my experience with you. Because it is impossible to keep ...

Mark Twain: live a happy and simple life following Mark's advice: 300 quotes to inspire you by T.D. Snowgrass 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified one hour ago

300 funny quotes from Mark Twain. Do you need to keep some inspirational quotes or speeches to inspire you when you are down? What better way than this ebook to keep them all in one place? That way you don't have to look for them. Who better than the amazing Mark Twain to provide advice? He changed American literature forever! Plus: Mark Twain's bio. Mark Twain is the pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 - 1910). He was born and brought up in the American state of Missouri and, because of his father's death, he left school to earn his living when he was only twelve. He was a great adventurer and travelled round America as a printer; prospected for gold and set off for South America to earn his fortune. He returned to become a steam-boat pilot on the Mississippi River, close to where he had grown up. The Civil War put an end to steam-boating and Clemens briefly joined the Confederate army - although the rest of his family were Unionists! He had already tried his hand at newspaper reporting and now became a successful journalist. He started to use the alias Mark Twain during the Civil War and it was under this pen name that he became a famous travel writer. He took the name from his steam-boat days - it was the river pilots' cry to let their men know that the water was two fathoms deep. Mark Twain was always nostalgic about his childhood and in 1876 The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was published, based on his own experiences. The book was soon recognised as a work of genius and eight years later the sequel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, was published. The great writer Ernest Hemingway claimed that 'All modern literature stems from this one book.' Mark Twain was soon famous all over the world. He made a fortune from writing and lost it on a typesetter he invented. He then made another fortune and lost it on a bad investment. He was an impulsive, hot-tempered man but was also quite sentimental and superstitious. He was born when Halley's Comet was passing ...

Finding Home by Mathew Chase 4.1 Stars (30 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

While safety and peace seem like they should be birthrights, some of us are born into situations that simply don't allow for these niceties. With a father who sold drugs and a mother who depended on them, the world felt anything but calm to author Matthew Chase. Growing up in one of the toughest parts of Philadelphia, Matthew learned things in his first few years of life that most of us never have to learn, like how to survive hunger when there's no food in the house and no one there to notice... how not to cry or show fear while being beat with a shoe by a foster parent... how to mask any signs of vulnerability when passing the dealers and gangsters on the street... or how to fight when one or a bunch of kids jump you on your way home from school. Somehow, Matthew knew he had a choice. He could conform to the status quo and become a victim of the mentality generated by this environment, or he could find a way to break free and build a different kind of life. Joining the U.S. military at age 18 as an exit route from what he'd known forever seemed like a promising solution, but it carried an exacting price tag of its own. Matthew's childhood began to seem like it had been easy compared to the brutality of training and fighting in Iraq while witnessing the slaying of friends who had become like brothers. Would Matthew ever find home? Follow the author's journey through seemingly endless challenges and failures to understand how these selfsame circumstances mold him into a mature and courageous man. In Finding Home, pain and heartbreak are transformed to what they truly are - stepping stones to ultimate strength and personal freedom.

In 1894, the two men conspired to fake Pitezel's death for the sake of a $10,000 insurance settlement. But Holmes decided murder would be simpler. BHAI SAHIB RANDHIR SINGH (1878-1961) was an outstanding freedom-fighter and a great saint and theologian who has made a lasting contribution to the religious and cultural revival in Punjab, and was one of the first few Punjabi revolutionaries who staked their life and career to bring about political awakening and win freedom for their country. Son of a High Court Judge and educated in Govt. College and Mission College, Lahore, Bhai Randhir Singh ushered a moral and spiritual revival which set into motion what later on came to be known as Gurdwara Reform Movement. In the Rakabganj Affair (1913) it was his stern challenge to the British Government and stirring call to the people to organize resistance, which prevented the further desecration of the historic shrine. In 1914, he was the only non-emigrant Sikh leader who completely identified himself with the cause of the Ghadar Party and suffered imprisonment for seventeen long years. He is known to historians of this period as "Hero of the First supplementary Lahore Conspiracy Case''. He is the only Sikh Leader who, in the last hundred years or more, has been given 'Hukamnamas' and Robes of Honour by the (then) four Takhats of the Panth, in solemn recognition of his sacrifices and impact on his times. His deep and original expositions of various aspects of Sikhism (more than 30 books) are a lasting contribution to Sikh theology, philosophy and mysticism. He distinguished himself in Punjabi prose and poetry by an erudite and powerful grand style of his own. Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh Ji devoted his life to Kirtan from 1901 and it is due to this, that he attracted and made friends with many Gursikhs. Out of these, he has written about the life events of 23 deceased ones in this book. He considered it desirable to write only about those, who had completed their earthly sojourn, since it is difficult to predict about a living being in his future conduct. Grandfather Lost by Vella Munn 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Violent death mystery lasts for one hundred years In 1924, Homer Eon Flint, a thirty six year old multi-published writer and married father of three young children was found dead at the bottom of a canyon. According to a witness and the police, he was pinned under a taxi with a loaded pistol nearby. The media sensationalized his violent end. Some sources suggested he'd participated in an earlier bank robbery. Several friends even considered that he'd committed suicide because of his interest in the occult. The taxi driver--who died in prison--told police that Flint had hijacked the taxi at gunpoint and had driven away, only to die in an accident later that night. Then there's the belief held by Homer's family. He was a victim -- in the wrong place at the wrong time. Homer Eon Flint is considered one of the early twentieth century American pioneers in science fiction. His work such as The Devolutionist and The Emancipatrix have remained as pillars of the speculative fiction genre. The Blind Spot, co-written with fellow pioneer Austin Hall, has been reprinted nearly a dozen times. He was a well-known writer of pulp fiction -- some of his stories garnering payments of hundreds of dollars in the booming post World War I economy. Fellow writer Ralph Parker Anderson, when asked if Flint had died a criminal replied, "I do not accept the view that he was a robber. If he had committed a crime, it would have been a superbly clever one, not ordinary thievery." Modern writers and scholars tend to agree that Flint, who envisaged space travel and genetic testing when the automobile and movies were in their infancy, didn't commit a crime. There is more to the story -- one he didn't live to tell. His oldest granddaughter and fellow writer Vella Munn became obsessed with learning everything she could about the man who was taken from his family when her mother was only six. Not only was Vella given custody of the magazines that carried his published work and stacks of ...

Searching for Dr. Harris: The Life and Times of a Remarkable African American Physician (Studies in Social Medicine) by Margaret Humphreys (The University of North Carolina Press) Price verified 5 hours ago

This is the untold story of Dr. J. D. Harris, an African American physician whose life and career straddled enormous changes for Black professionals and the practice of medicine. Born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Harris served as a contract physician to the Union Army and transitioned to a similar post under the Freedmen's Bureau, treating Black troops and freemen in Virginia. Margaret Humphreys narrates not only what we know about Harris, but offers context to his remarkable journey, including how incredible it was that a young man born into freedom in a slave state learned to read when literacy for Black people was illegal. He was one of very few African Americans to become a doctor before Howard Medical School opened in the 1870s, a fact that reveals both the structural barriers to medical education for Black Americans and highlights how those structures weakened in the 1860s. Drawing on census records, court records, Civil War and Reconstruction documents from the National Archives, African American newspapers, and more, this book is a revealing look at not only the history of medicine in the Southern United States, but of race and citizenship during one of the nation's most tumultuous eras.

Top Models by Samuel Claesson (Sequoia Press) 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 34 minutes ago

There were a lot of talents in Hollywood in the 1950s, some of whom -despite being talented- faded into obscurity after a brief fling at stardom. I thought that it'd be great to pay tribute to seven whom appeared in films like Guys and Dolls (1955) while modeling for some prominent brands. June Kirby (1928-2022), Larri Thomas (1932-2013), and Pat Sheehan (1931-2006) are the blondes, and Suzanne Ames (1933-2013), Suzanne Alexander (1931-1975), Madelyn Darrow (1935-2015), and Jann Darlyn are the brunettes. They could act, sing, dance, and some became successful in the field of business. I conducted various interviews and compiled photographs to create a great publication dedicated to their careers.

The Girl With No Mouth by Edith Broadwater 4.2 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

The ups and downs of mental illness fully submerge and threaten to drown any who stand too close. Written during months of periodic psychosis, the full power of any and all emotion are felt overwhelmingly and seemingly permanent: despair and emptiness before an attempted prescription overdose, fear and hysteria from a powerful hallucination, the crazy that people hide behind saying that they're just sad when really -- they're being constricted by an invisible, impending doom that freezes their heart, squeezes their eyeballs, and turns fingers blue. This is a nonfiction book about addressing the ugly side of mental illness. The parts that nobody wants to talk about... or listen to... or...

Coping With Breast Cancer. by Ricky Sides 4.1 Stars (106 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

In the mid-nineties, my wife was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, which had metastasized to her lymph nodes. The essay "Coping with Breast Cancer" details what happened in the wake of that diagnosis. We decided to release this composition in the hopes of helping other couples confronted with this terrible disease. Here is a brief excerpt from Coping with Breast Cancer. In the fall of 1994 we were living the good life. We'd just bought our dream house and moved in the previous July and were looking forward to our first holiday season in our new home. Only one thing placed a cloud over our lives at that point in time. My wife had a mysterious bloody discharge from one breast. She had also lost a considerable amount of weight and I was beginning to become concerned. My wife was reluctant to agree to go to a doctor but finally I managed to elicit a promise from her that she would go to see a physician the day after Thanksgiving. That morning we got into our car for the drive to the doctor, never suspecting that our lives were about to be forever changed. I sat in the waiting room while my wife saw her gynecologist. I saw her come back out just a few minutes after she had been escorted back to the examination room. She was pale and said that the doctor had told her we had to go to the hospital at once for a mammogram and that the doctor was calling ahead to get her worked in that day. She broke down and cried on the drive to the hospital and expressed her sense of dread saying, "The doctor says she's afraid it might be breast cancer." That was the first time I heard the words breast cancer in relation to my wife. They were the scariest words I'd ever heard in my life. This is a 9,100 word essay, and not a full length book. The page count in 6 x 9 format is 37 pages.

Richard Owen: Scotland 1810, Indiana 1890 (The Founders Series) by Victor Lincoln Albjerg (Purdue University Press) Price verified 5 hours ago

Richard Dale Owen was born in 1810 in Scotland to a wealthy textile manufacturer and philanthropist. The youngest of eight children, Richard grew up at the family estate of Braxfield House, where he received his early education from private tutors. He would later go on to study chemistry, physics, and natural sciences, among other subjects, traveling between Scotland and Switzerland for his schooling. Owen arrived in the United States in 1828 to teach in New Haven, Indiana, where his father was running an experimental utopian community of happiness, enlightenment, and prosperity. He would later go on to be Indiana's second state geologist before enlisting in the army during both the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. Colonel Owen took command of 4,000 Confederate prisoners at Camp Morton in Indianapolis, where he established new daily routines and rules for supervision of the prisoners. Under Owen's command, prisoners were allowed to read books and form glee clubs, theatrical groups, and sports teams. He also created a camp bakery staffed by prisoners that proved to be a substantial cost savings, allowing for above-average rations for the prisoners under his watch. After his military service came to an end, Owen continued to serve as a state geologist as well as becoming a professor at Indiana University, teaching chemistry, language, and natural philosophy. After failing to help secure IU as Indiana's land-grant school, Owen was recruited to help establish Purdue University, west of Lafayette. The board of trustees selected him to serve as the University's first president on August 13, 1872. However, Owen and the trustees disagreed on many early initiatives, including his focus on agriculture and push for more comfortable living arrangements for students. After less than two years serving as president, where he never drew a salary, Owen resigned his position and returned to teaching at Indiana University, until hearing problems caused him to ...

Edward Charles Elliott, Educator (The Founders Series) by Frank K. Burrin (Purdue University Press) Price verified 9 hours ago

A study of the 50-year career of Edward Charles Elliott is a study of the development of American education. Elliott had experience as a high school and college teacher, school system superintendent, state college system chancellor, and president of a Big Ten university, all during a period of change in American attitudes toward public schooling and rapid growth in education institutions. As president of Purdue University from 1922 to 1945, Elliott steered the school through years of expansion in size, prestige, and service. Student enrollment, staff, course offerings, buildings, and campus acreage more than doubled; the total value of the physical plant increased more than five-fold, and the schools of pharmacy, home economics, and graduate study were opened under Elliott's leadership. This book shows not only how Elliott helped make Purdue University what it is today, but documents educational trends from 1900 to 1950 and includes a lengthy bibliography of Elliott's writings to assist the student of higher education.

The Dean: A Biography of A.A. Potter (The Founders Series) by Robert B. Eckles (Purdue University Press) Price verified 5 hours ago

More than 20,000 engineering students at Purdue University have been touched in some way by the ides or the warm personality of Andrey A. Potter, who served for 33 years as dean of the Schools of Engineering at Purdue, the world's largest engineering institution. Awarded the honorary title of "Dean of the Deans of Engineering Universities" in 1949 by his alma mater, MIT, Potter has been a teacher for 48 years and a dean for 40. Among his thousands of colleagues at Kansas State, Purdue, and the professional societies he has headed, he is known with respect and affection simply as "the Dean." This book, illustrated with photographs, traces his life from his boyhood in Russia and his journey at age 15 to America where, he contends, his life really began. We see him as a student cutting lab classes to attend an afternoon concert of the Boston Symphony, as a young man growing a van Dyke beard to make himself look older for his first job as an engineer with General Electric, and as a new assistant professor at Kansas State, courting his schoolteacher-sweetheart in a horse and buggy. His contributions to the engineering profession are many. He was president of the leading professional societies, prepared an exhaustive state-of-the-art study of engineering, and enhanced the public service aspects of his field by participating in government advisory boards. Greatly admired for his work with the National Patent Planning Commission, where he protected the right of the inventor to the fruits of his ingenuity, he is also respected for his publications in his own area of research, power generation and super-critical steam. A selected bibliography lists his writings. At Kansas State and Purdue, he organized curricula to emphasize study that could be used by engineers to solve problems in agriculture and industry; this brought farmers and businessmen closer to the campus and more aware of the university's service to their state. He found deepest pleasure, however, not in these ...

Christian Leaders of the Eighteenth Century (Updated, Annotated): Eleven Biographies in One Volume by J. C. Ryle 4.7 Stars (149 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Biographies of George Whitefield, John Wesley, William Grimshaw, William Romaine, Daniel Rowlands, John Berridge, Henry Venn, Samuel Walker, James Hervey, Augustus Toplady, and John Fletcher. The reader will soon discover that I am an enthusiastic admirer of the men whose lives and ministries I have narrated in this volume. I confess it honestly. I am a thorough admirer of them. I firmly believe that, with the exceptions of Martin Luther and his contemporaries and our own martyred Reformers, the world has not seen any such men since the days of the apostles. I believe there have not been any who have preached as much clear scriptural truth, none who have lived such lives, none who have shown such courage in Christ's service, none who have suffered as much for the truth, and none who have done as much good. If anyone can name better men, he knows more than I do. My purpose in compiling these biographies was to present to the public the lives, characters, and work of the leading ministers whom God used to revive Christianity in England in the eighteenth century. I had long believed that these great men were not sufficiently known, and as a consequence, their value and merit had not been sufficiently recognized. I thought that the church and the world should know something more than they seem to know about such men as Whitefield, Wesley, Romaine, Rowlands, Grimshaw, Berridge, Venn, Toplady, Hervey, Walker, and Fletcher. For twenty years, I waited anxiously for some worthy account of these mighty spiritual heroes. At last I became weary of waiting, and I resolved to take the pen in my own hand and do what I could in the pages of this book. I now send forth this volume with an earnest prayer that God will pardon all its imperfections, use it for His own glory, and raise up in His church today men like those who are here described. Certainly when we look at the state of the church today, we may well say, "Where is the Lord God of Whitefield and of Rowlands, of ...

Babysitter: An American History by Miriam Forman-Brunell (NYU Press) 4.7 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

On Friday nights many parents want to have a little fun together -- without the kids. But "getting a sitter" -- especially a dependable one -- rarely seems trouble-free. Will the kids be safe with "that girl"? It's a question that discomfited parents have been asking ever since the emergence of the modern American teenage girl nearly a century ago. In Babysitter, Miriam Forman-Brunell brings critical attention to the ubiquitous, yet long-overlooked babysitter in the popular imagination and American history. Informed by her research on the history of teenage girls' culture, Forman-Brunell analyzes the babysitter, who has embodied adults' fundamental apprehensions about girls' pursuit of autonomy and empowerment. In fact, the grievances go both ways, as girls have been distressed by unsatisfactory working conditions. In her quest to gain a fuller picture of this largely unexamined cultural phenomenon, Forman-Brunell analyzes a wealth of diverse sources, such as The Baby-sitter's Club book series, horror movies like The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, urban legends, magazines, newspapers, television shows, pornography, and more. Forman-Brunell shows that beyond the mundane, understandable apprehensions stirred by hiring a caretaker to "mind the children" in one's own home, babysitters became lightning rods for society's larger fears about gender and generational change. In the end, experts' efforts to tame teenage girls with training courses, handbooks, and other texts failed to prevent generations from turning their backs on babysitting.

The Wow Climax: Tracing the Emotional Impact of Popular Culture by Henry Jenkins 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

A spirited collection of essays that get to the heart of what gives popular culture its emotional impact Vaudevillians used the term "the wow climax" to refer to the emotional highpoint of their acts -- a final moment of peak spectacle following a gradual building of audience's emotions. Viewed by most critics as vulgar and sensationalistic, the vaudeville aesthetic was celebrated by other writers for its vitality, its liveliness, and its playfulness. The Wow Climax follows in the path of this more laudatory tradition, drawing out the range of emotions in popular culture and mapping what we might call an aesthetic of immediacy. It pulls together a spirited range of work from Henry Jenkins, one of our most astute media scholars, that spans different media (film, television, literature, comics, games), genres (slapstick, melodrama, horror, exploitation cinema), and emotional reactions (shock, laughter, sentimentality). Whether highlighting the sentimentality at the heart of the Lassie franchise, examining the emotional experiences created by horror filmmakers like Wes Craven and David Cronenberg and avant garde artist Matthew Barney, or discussing the emerging aesthetics of video games, these essays get to the heart of what gives popular culture its emotional impact.

The Essential Agus: The Writings of Jacob B. Agus by Steven T. Katz (NYU Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified one hour ago

Rabbi Jacob Agus' (1911-1986) intellectual production spanned nearly a half century and covered an enormous historical and conceptual range, from the biblical to the modern era. Best known as an important Jewish scholar, he also held important rabbinic, teaching, and public positions. Although born and raised within an orthodox setting, Agus was strongly influenced by American liberalism and his work displayed modernizing sympathies, reservations about nationalism--including some forms of Zionism--and often severe criticisms of kabbalah. Agus crafted a unique, quite American, modernizing vision that ardently sought to remain in touch with the wellsprings of the rabbinic tradition while remaining open to the intellectual and moral currents of his own time. The Essential Agus brings together a sampling of Agus' most important published and unpublished material in one easily accessible volume. It will be an invaluable resource for students and researchers seeking to experience Agus' intellectual legacy.

Reflections: The Life and Writings of a Young Blind Woman in Post-Revolutionary France (The History of Disability Book 5) by Therese-Adèle Husson (NYU Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 34 minutes ago

In the 1820s, several years before Braille was invented, Therese-Adele Husson, a young blind woman from provincial France, wrote an audacious manifesto about her life, French society, and her hopes for the future. Through extensive research and scholarly detective work, authors Catherine Kudlick and Zina Weygand have rescued this intriguing woman and the remarkable story of her life and tragic death from obscurity, giving readers a rare look into a world recorded by an unlikely historical figure. Reflections is one of the earliest recorded manifestations of group solidarity among people with the same disability, advocating self-sufficiency and independence on the part of blind people, encouraging education for all blind children, and exploring gender roles for both men and women. Resolutely defying the sense of "otherness" which pervades discourse about the disabled, Husson instead convinces us that that blindness offers a fresh and important perspective on both history and ourselves. In rescuing this important historical account and recreating the life of an obscure but potent figure, Weygand and Kudlick have awakened a perspective that transcends time and which, ultimately, remaps our inherent ideas of physical sensibility

Expression. My Cancer: a Gut Feeling. by Kerry O'Brien 3.8 Stars (23 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

Reading a book about an individual's journey with a terminal bowel cancer diagnosis would ordinarily seem to be a rather depressing read. However, Kerry's light-hearted sense of humour and unending positivity and love of life shines through in her writing. In this very personal book, Kerry overcomes the stigma of talking openly about the symptoms and treatments for bowel cancer: there are graphic descriptions of some of the intimate details of bodily (mal)functions; reflections on her research into what may have contributed to her diagnosis and nutritional and other lifestyle changes she has found helpful. Kerry shares how she has made sense of her situation and developed coping strategies, in the hope of helping others. The insights gained from this book will be valuable for a broad range of readers: patients with bowel cancer, wanting to learn more about other patients' experiences; families and friends of bowel cancer patients (who perhaps feel uncomfortable asking those difficult questions); healthcare professionals who want a deeper understanding of their patients' emotional, as well as physical needs; researchers exploring the lived experiences of bowel cancer patients and writers investigating comparative healthcare provision for cancer patients. Kerry's book is an inspiring and readable story, written from the heart.

Borden of Yale: The Life and Legacy of William Borden - No Reserve, No Retreat, No Regrets by Mrs. Howard Taylor 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 34 minutes ago

The Inspiring Life and Legacy of William Borden, a Man of Unwavering Faith and Profound Impact William Borden was extraordinary in almost every sense. Born into wealth and privilege, he could have chosen to live a life of luxury and ease. Instead, he surrendered it all for a life of service to Christ. "Borden of Yale" is the riveting account of a man who exemplified what it means to be fully committed to God. Raised in Moody Church in Chicago and educated at both Yale and Princeton, Borden first felt the missionary call during a round-the-world journey gifted to him by his parents at the age of sixteen. The following year, he received a distinct call to dedicate his life to serving the Muslims of China, a decision that shaped everything he did from that point forward. Though a scholar in his own right, Borden's theological insights were not merely intellectual pursuits; they were living beliefs that propelled him into action. From leading Bible studies in dorms and founding the Yale Hope Mission to serving as a director at the National Bible Institute and spearheading evangelistic efforts that impacted the entire city of Cairo, Borden was unwavering in his commitment to share the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. As promising as his life appeared, Borden passed away in Egypt while en route to serve the Muslims in China. Thousands mourned, contemplating what might have been. Yet countless others have been inspired to follow in his footsteps to the mission field. William Borden was a visionary, a trailblazer, and an inspiration for all who seek to follow Jesus Christ. This is not just a book; it's an invitation to reevaluate what truly matters and to live wholeheartedly for the Lord.

End of the Road (The Rozzers Book 1) by Diem Burden (Shriven Books) 3.9 Stars (297 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

What is it about cops that we find so intriguing? Most people have strong views of the police, but how many of these views are based on evidence, and which are biased or stereotypes? What makes a person leave a perfectly normal life and join the police, putting themselves instantly into harms way, and suffering health issues that come with working a lifetime of shift-work, not to mention a messed-up social life? This is the true, short story of just such a person who ended up spending 12 years at the sharp end of policing in the beautiful city of Cambridge in the UK. It starts with a seemingly routine day in the life of young British soldier Diem Burden. His life is at a crossroads: his military career rapidly coming to an end with no idea of what to do post-army. With a new family to support, the pressure is mounting on him to find a way forward - and soon. Returning back to camp after an idyllic day out, the squaddie is thrown into a horrifying tragedy which puts him to the test, as well as those around him. Later, whilst trying to cope with the trauma of that dreadful event, a seed is quietly planted which, with a slight bit of nurturing, leads Diem along a certain path. If you thought being an unarmed British cop was tough, deciding to become one can be even tougher. Warning: Contains strong language and graphic descriptions of death and injury from the outset.

The Bible by King James version (E-BOOKARAMA) 4.1 Stars (22 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

When James I became King of England in 1603, having a Bible version dedicated to him was the farthest thing from his mind. But being a good administrator, when the Puritans presented him with a list of grievances they had against the Church of England, James decided to convene a conference to try to work out the differences. No real decisions of lasting worth were made at that conference except one: To create a new version of the English Bible. In 1611 the first copies of the new "Authorized Version" were released. Like every new Bible version before, it had to deal with people hesitant to give up their older versions. But it quickly overcame these trials, and within 25 years it had replaced the Geneva Translation as the version most used in Churches and for private study. And because of its excellence, the King James Version would become the only English Bible for almost three centuries.

Making Peace in an Age of War: Emperor Ferdinand III (1608–1657) (Central European Studies) by Mark Hengerer (Purdue University Press) 3.9 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 34 minutes ago

This English-language translation of Mark Hengerer's Kaiser Ferdinand III: 1608-1657 Eine Biographie is based on an analysis of the weekly reports sent by the papal nuncio's office to the Vatican. These reports give detailed information about the daily whereabouts of the dynasty, courtiers, and foreign visitors, and they contain the gossip of the court in addition to weekly analysis of some political problems. This material enabled the author to report on daily life of the dynasty and to analyze the circumstances under which policy was made, which has led to a balance between the personality of Ferdinand III and the problems with which he dealt. In this biography, Hengerer provides answers to the question: Why did it take the emperor more than ten years to end a devastating war, the traumatizing effects of which on central Europe lasted into the twentieth century, particularly since there was no hope of victory against his foreign adversaries from the very moment he came into power?

Eva and Otto: Resistance, Refugees, and Love in the Time of Hitler by Tom Pfister (Purdue University Press) 4.7 Stars (22 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

Eva and Otto is a true story about German opposition and resistance to Hitler as revealed through the early lives of Eva Lewinski Pfister (1910-1991) and Otto Pfister (1900-1985). It is an intimate and epic account of two Germans -- Eva born Jewish, Otto born Catholic -- who worked with a little-known German political group that resisted and fought against Hitler in Germany before 1933 and then in exile in Paris before the German invasion of France in May 1940. After their improbable escapes from separate internment and imprisonment in Europe, Eva obtained refuge in America in October 1940 where she worked to rescue other endangered political refugees, including Otto, with the help of Eleanor Roosevelt. As revealed in recently declassified records, Eva and Otto later engaged in different secret assignments with the US Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in support of the Allied war effort. Despite their vastly different backgrounds, Eva and Otto gave each other hope and strength as they acted upon what they understood to be an ethical duty to help others threatened by fascism. The book provides a sobering insight into the personal risks and costs of a commitment to that duty. Their unusually beautiful writing -- directed to each other in diaries and correspondence during two long periods of wartime separation -- also reveals an unlikely and inspiring love story.

Ike's Letters to a Friend, 1941-1958 by Robert W. Griffith (University Press of Kansas) 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

"Swede Hazlett was one of the people to whom I 'opened up.'" -- Dwight D. Eisenhower Dwight D. Eisenhower and E. E. ("Swede") Hazlett grew up together in Abilene, Kansas, and remained close, corresponding regularly from 1941 until Hazlett's death in 1958. The letters collected in this volume, many of them surprisingly revealing, contain Eisenhower's views on a wide range of diplomatic, military, and political issues. Taken together they constitute a remarkable inner history of Eisenhower's public career. Robert Griffith's introductory essay is a masterful account of the Eisenhower-Hazlett relationship and of the insights provided by their correspondence for understanding the Eisenhower years. Griffith's substantial headnotes give additional detail and context where necessary and provide a sense of narrative continuity to the correspondence. The Eisenhower who emerges from these pages bears little resemblance to the bumbling caricature produced by journalists in the 1950s. But neither does he fit the role assigned to him by so many people today, whether liberal critics of the Cold War, conservative opponents of Democratic fiscal policy, or White House aides attempting to "Eisenhowerize" Ronald Reagan. He is, rather, a complex and multidimensional historical figure whom we must study, on his own terms, if we are to fully understand our recent past. Meet the Man from Hobbtown by Dennis R Smith 3.9 Stars (17 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

In Dennis' words: "Meet the Man from Hobbtown is a record of my life, written now when, at the present date, I am eighty-eight years old. After being asked many times by my two daughters, Pamela (Smith) Hill, of Portland, Oregon, and Angela Smith, of Springfield, Missouri, I have finally yielded to their wishes and put in print a great part of my life. I have not done this for any financial benefit, but I hope that my entire family will appreciate this history, which has its start in the year I was born, December 11, 1929." The e-book version of this book was published posthumously. Dennis joined his beloved wife, Carolyn Smith, on August 31, 2023, after eight months apart. The family has opted to publish the book for free for anyone who wishes to know more about this incredible man.
