She idealizes her best friend, Lexus, who not only seems to lead the perfect life, but also catches the attention of John, the boy Kristen secretly loves. Kristen feels like an utter failure. She is unable to please her abrasive mother, and scared to confront Jack, her abusive stepfather. She is also unable to protect Nick from Jack, making her fell all the more helpless. Adding to her problems, she knows she will never be as beautiful as her best friend Lexus. Kristen finds solace in self-injury, and the company of Mr. Sharp, her imaginary friend who encourages her feelings of self-loathing. After a failed suicide attempt, Kristen is placed in the Bent Creek mental hospital, where she is diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. While in the hospital, she meets a group of peers suffering with their own mental illnesses, and a compassionate staff of doctors and counselors. From there, Kristen begins her journey to survival. She discovers the circumstances that brought her to this breaking point, struggles to understand her mental illness, and fights to be a survivor against her own worst enemy: her self-blame. Kristen's tale of endurance illustrates the complex illness of Borderline Personality Disorder. Readers - including those suffering from BPD and their friends and family - can glean insight into the illness from Kristen's humanity. Her story is an example of how, if we try to push the past away, we are either doomed to repeat it or let it haunt us to our graves.

HEAVEN SENT LOVE: FINDING PEACE THROUGH THE STORMS OF SORROW AND LOSS by Julie Lowry 4.2 Stars (13 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

Do you know anyone who has gone through a rough time, lost hope, had depression, lost a child, wanted to crawl in a hole, and never come out? We all know many people like that; perhaps we are that person. This book is about life, love, losing a child, sorrow, and the grieving that comes with it. You will feel connected to those in this book who share the most heartbreaking and painful moments they have ever been through. You will be able to feel empathy for them while you read about the torn pieces of their life as they begin to heal and come back into the world of the living. There are many stories of a child dying; from illness, drowning, being run over, stillbirth, falling from a cliff, plane crash, avalanche, suicide, and more. Writing a book was not my idea, but God prompted me many years ago that I was supposed to write this book. (He keeps updating the promptings over and over.) The purpose is so we can all experience the love, comfort, and healing that is ongoing for everyone.

What's Breath Got to Do With it: Synchronizing breathing with being by Offer Dan 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 9 hours ago

For your information You can find on the internet and download the complete eBook for free. Those who "laugh last" are the ones who postpone the last breath and breathe well until the day comes. My mom practiced Yoga and was a breathwork instructor. I started juggling my breath at the age of nine. Five decades later, I decided to write about my methods, personal experiences, and intimate memoirs, sharing my insights. The book is a culmination of persistent knowledge-seeking guided by science and cross-examined by personal observations; the approach sidesteps from the trodden path in presentation and interpretation. Even though Air is light, the subject of breathing can be heavy, burdened with myths and mystic words. I aim to simplify tangled topics yet deeply penetrate the matters discussed. The added humor should assist in digesting the fiber of understanding respiration. Here's a summary of what's covered: • Basic explanations of the biology and chemistry of breathing. • Indications to assess personal effects of different breathing practices. • Practical ways to evaluate an individual's breathing profile. • Breathing exercises for physical and mental wellness. • Breathing tools for responding to immediate situations. Chances are my breathing practices will affect you differently than they affect me. Therefore, I intend to provide you with the know-hows and ways to tweak my practices so they may better suit you as an individual. Along the way, I will answer many questions like the ones below. • Why do traumatic events register differently when screaming out as opposed to holding the breath? • How can synchronizing smiles with inhaling augment the effect of breathing exercises? • How can video recordings of night sleeping make mouth-taping redundant? • How does a 'breathing clock' improve body language synchronization when speaking to an audience? • How does 'Dying man's breathing' assist in overcoming cravings? • How can the ...

How to Become Smarter by Charles Spender (KDP) 3.4 Stars (50 Reviews)    Price verified 13 hours ago

*** Updated in November 2023 *** A shorter, less technical version of this book, "Become Smarter," is available: amazon.com/dp/B00CNUKV22 The book describes methods for improvement of mental abilities (cognitive enhancement). Some of the things it can help you to achieve include the following: • Depending on circumstances, use different lifestyles that improve one or another mental function. • Experience euphoria without drugs and come up with new ideas, when needed. • Slow down and prevent yourself from making rash, impulsive decisions, when necessary. • Sharpen your wit, become more talkative, and entertain people. • When necessary, lower your mood and increase emotional tension, which can reduce procrastination. • Increase your score on intelligence (IQ tests) or general aptitude tests. • Concentrate on reading and writing for many hours daily. • Increase your grade point average if you are a student or improve your job productivity if you are a knowledge worker. The proposed methods are brief cooling or heating of the body (water therapy) and three "smart diets," each suitable for a different type of task. The text also describes a "depressant diet," which is not a smart diet but can improve self-control and sleep. Readers don't need to use the strict diets on a permanent basis and the book recommends the conventional food pyramid most of the time. The text also discusses several useful social skills and studying/writing techniques as well as the role of luck in personal achievement. Most authors in this field will tell you that you should read more books, solve mental puzzles, buy their nutritional supplements, sleep well, and exercise in order to get smarter. In contrast, this book is proposing moderately cold hydrotherapy and a smart diet (which involves avoiding all dietary supplements). To give another example, most books on anger management say that you should try to change your thinking in order to overcome anger, while this ...

Feeling Mediated: A History of Media Technology and Emotion in America (Critical Cultural Communication Book 31) by Brenton J. Malin (NYU Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 9 hours ago

New technologies, whether text message or telegraph, inevitably raise questions about emotion. New forms of communication bring with them both fear and hope, on one hand allowing us deeper emotional connections and the ability to forge global communities, while on the other prompting anxieties about isolation and over-stimulation. Feeling Mediated investigates the larger context of such concerns, considering both how media technologies intersect with our emotional lives and how our ideas about these intersections influence how we think about and experience emotion and technology themselves. Drawing on extensive archival research, Brenton J. Malin explores the historical roots of much of our recent understanding of mediated feelings, showing how earlier ideas about the telegraph, phonograph, radio, motion pictures, and other once-new technologies continue to inform our contemporary thinking. With insightful analysis, Feeling Mediated explores a series of fascinating arguments about technology and emotion that became especially heated during the early 20th century. These debates, which carried forward and transformed earlier discussions of technology and emotion, culminated in a set of ideas that became institutionalized in the structures of American media production, advertising, social research, and policy, leaving a lasting impact on our everyday lives.

Covid Conspiracy Theories in Global Perspective by Michael Butter (Routledge) 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 13 hours ago

Covid Conspiracy Theories in Global Perspective examines how conspiracy theories and related forms of misinformation and disinformation about the Covid-19 pandemic have circulated widely around the world. Covid conspiracy theories have attracted considerable attention from researchers, journalists, and politicians, not least because conspiracy beliefs have the potential to negatively affect adherence to public health measures. While most of this focus has been on the United States and Western Europe, this collection provides a unique global perspective on the emergence and development of conspiracy theories through a series of case studies. The chapters have been commissioned by recognized experts on area studies and conspiracy theories. The chapters present case studies on how Covid conspiracism has played out (some focused on a single country, others on regions), using a range of methods from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including history, politics, sociology, anthropology, and psychology. Collectively, the authors reveal that, although there are many narratives that have spread virally, they have been adapted for different uses and take on different meanings in local contexts. This volume makes an important contribution to the rapidly expanding field of academic conspiracy theory studies, as well as being of interest to those working in the media, regulatory agencies, and civil society organizations, who seek to better understand the problem of how and why conspiracy theories spread. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.

Augmented Humanity: Being and Remaining Agentic in a Digitalized World by Peter T. Bryant (Palgrave Macmillan) 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 6 hours ago

This open access book will examine the implications of digitalization for the understanding of humanity, conceived as a community of intelligent agency. It addresses important topics across a range of social and behavioral theories and identifies a range of novel mechanisms and their social behavioral effects. Across the book, the author highlights the expansion of intelligent processing capability brought about by digitalization and the challenges this exposes for integrating artificial and human capabilities. It includes the altered effects of bounded rationality in problem solving and decision making; related changes in the perception of rationality, plus novel myopias and biases. It also seeks to address cognitive intersubjectivity, learning from performance and agentic self-generation; and the novel methods and patterns of reasoned thought which emerge in a digitalized world; and how these mechanisms will combine in making and remaking the world of human experience and understanding. This book examines the problematics and prospects for digitally augmented humanity. In doing so, it maps the terrain for a future science of augmented agency. It will have cross-disciplinary appeal to students and scholars of applied psychology, cognitive and behavioral science, organizational psychology and management, business, finance, and digital cultures and humanities.

This open access edited book brings together new research on the mechanisms by which maternal and reproductive health policies are formed and implemented in diverse locales around the world, from global policy spaces to sites of practice. The authors - both internationally respected anthropologists and new voices - demonstrate the value of ethnography and the utility of reproduction as a lens through which to generate rich insights into professionals' and lay people's intimate encounters with policy. Authors look closely at core policy debates in the history of global maternal health across six different continents, including: • Women's use of misoprostol for abortion in Burkina Faso • The place of traditional birth attendants in global maternal health • Donor-driven maternal health programs in Tanzania • Efforts to integrate qualitative evidence in WHO maternal and child health policy-making Anthropologies of Global Maternal and Reproductive Health will engage readers interested in critical conversations about global health policy today. The broad range of foci makes it a valuable resource for teaching in medical anthropology, anthropology of reproduction, and interdisciplinary global health programs. The book will also find readership amongst critical public health scholars, health policy and systems researchers, and global public health practitioners.

Knowledge and Action (Knowledge and Space Book 9) by Peter Meusburger (Springer) 4.4 Stars (10 Reviews)    Price verified 13 hours ago

This volume explores interdependencies between knowledge, action, and space from different interdisciplinary perspectives. Some of the contributors discuss knowledge as a social construct based on collective action, while others look at knowledge as an individual capacity for action. The chapters contain theoretical frameworks as well as experimental outcomes. Readers will gain insight into key questions such as: How does knowledge function as a prerequisite for action? Why are knowledge gaps growing and not diminishing in a knowledge society? How much knowledge is necessary for action? How do various types of knowledge influence the steps from cognition to action? How do different representations of knowledge shape action? What impact have spatial conditions for the formation of knowledge? What is the relationship between social and geographical space? The contributors consider rationality in social and economic theories as well as in everyday life. Attention is also given to action theoretic approaches and rationality from the viewpoints of psychology, post-structuralism, and human geography, making this an attractive book for students, researchers and academics of various backgrounds. This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license.

Social Exclusion in Later Life: Interdisciplinary and Policy Perspectives (International Perspectives on Aging Book 28) by Kieran Walsh (Springer) 3.8 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

Drawing on interdisciplinary, cross-national perspectives, this open access book contributes to the development of a coherent scientific discourse on social exclusion of older people. The book considers five domains of exclusion (services; economic; social relations; civic and socio-cultural; and community and spatial domains), with three chapters dedicated to analysing different dimensions of each exclusion domain. The book also examines the interrelationships between different forms of exclusion, and how outcomes and processes of different kinds of exclusion can be related to one another. In doing so, major cross-cutting themes, such as rights and identity, inclusive service infrastructures, and displacement of marginalised older adult groups, are considered. Finally, in a series of chapters written by international policy stakeholders and policy researchers, the book analyses key policies relevant to social exclusion and older people, including debates linked to sustainable development, EU policy and social rights, welfare and pensions systems, and planning and development. The book's approach helps to illuminate the comprehensive multidimensionality of social exclusion, and provides insight into the relative nature of disadvantage in later life. With 77 contributors working across 28 nations, the book presents a forward-looking research agenda for social exclusion amongst older people, and will be an important resource for students, researchers and policy stakeholders working on ageing.

Life Skills Education for Youth: Critical Perspectives (Young People and Learning Processes in School and Everyday Life Book 5) by Joan DeJaeghere (Springer) 3.5 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 13 hours ago

This open access volume critically reviews a diverse body of scholarship and practice that informs the conceptualization, curriculum, teaching and measurement of life skills in education settings around the world. It discusses life skills as they are implemented in schools and non-formal education, providing both qualitative and quantitative evidence of when, with whom, and how life skills do or do not impact young women's and men's lives in various contexts. Specifically, it examines the nature and importance of life skills, and how they are taught. It looks at the synergies and differences between life skills educational programmes and the way in which they promote social and emotional learning, vocational/employment education, and health and sexuality education. Finally, it explores how life skills may be better incorporated into education and how such education can address structures and relations of power to help youth achieve desired future outcomes, and goals set out in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Life skills education has gained considerable attention by education policymakers, researchers and educators as being the sine qua non for later achievements in life. It is nearly ubiquitous in global and national education policies, including the SDGs, because life skills are regarded as essential for a diverse set of purposes: reducing poverty, achieving gender equality, promoting economic growth, addressing climate change, fostering peace and global citizenship, and creating sustainable and healthy communities. Yet, to achieve these broad goals, questions persist as to which life skills are important, who needs to learn them, how they can be taught, and how they are best measured. This book addresses these questions.

The Practice of Texts: Education and Healing in South India by Anthony Cerulli (University of California Press) 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 13 hours ago

A free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org. The Practice of Texts examines the uses of the Sanskrit medical classics in two educational institutions of India's classical life science, Ayurveda: the college and the gurukula. In this interdisciplinary study, Anthony Cerulli probes late- and postcolonial reforms in ayurvedic education, the development of the ayurvedic college, and the impacts of the college curriculum on ways that ayurvedic physicians understand and use the Sanskrit classics in their professional work today. His fieldwork in south India illuminates the nature of philology and ritual in the ayurvedic gurukula and showcases how knowledge is exchanged among students, teachers, and patients. The result, Cerulli shows, is that the Sanskrit classics are presented and applied differently in the college and gurukula, producing a variety of relationships with these texts among practitioners. By interrogating the politics surrounding the place of the Sanskrit classics in ayurvedic curricula, this book reveals a spectrum of views about the history and tradition of Ayurveda in modern India.

From Hell to Health by Robert Black 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 6 hours ago

I wrote this book during a time while I was fighting to reclaim my health and my life. I have struggled with health for a long time now and it wasn't until I decided to go all in on health that things started to change. All of the things in here are my opinions and experiences and I don't claim that they will miraculously cure you, but they may help you take those steps you need to take, in order to heal yourself. I do not have any kind of training in the medical field, but I don't think you need that in order to heal yourself, all you need is a deep desire for something better than what you currently have. This book has a ton of mistakes in it and I left them there when proofreading since those mistakes took a lot of effort for me to put there as this book was written as I was still feeling very bad. I am not much of an author, but this was the best way I could think of to help others going through hell and hopefully find their way out. As well this book is quite long but I didn't want to edit anything as I probably would have ended up totally messing it up. Anyway, I sincerely hope that this helps and if not, then keep on searching for something that does. That is how you find health, by looking in the most obscure places and from people who you never thought would be able to help you, and you keep doing this until you finally claw your way back to health.

Feeling Gender: A Generational and Psychosocial Approach (Palgrave Macmillan Studies in Family and Intimate Life) by Harriet Bjerrum Nielsen (Palgrave Macmillan) 4.1 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book explores how feelings about gender have changed over three interrelated generations of women and men of different social classes during the twentieth century. The author explores the ways in which generational experiences are connected, what is continued, what triggers gradual or abrupt changes between generations - and between women and men within these generations. The book explores how new feelings of gender gradually change gender norms from within, and how they contribute to the incremental creation of new social practices.??? Nielsen suggests a new way of conducting psychosocial research that focuses on generational psychological patterns of gender identities and gendered subjectivities in times of change from a psychoanalytic perspective. Combining generational and longitudinal research, the book works with temporality as a theoretical as well as a methodological dimension. Theoretically it combines Raymond Williams' idea of "a structure of feeling" with the work of Eric Fromm, Hans Loewald, Nancy Chodorow and Jessica Benjamin.

A History of Intelligence and 'Intellectual Disability': The Shaping of Psychology in Early Modern Europe by C.F. Goodey (Routledge) 4.2 Stars (25 Reviews)    Price verified 13 hours ago

Starting with the hypothesis that not only human intelligence but also its antithesis 'intellectual disability' are nothing more than historical contingencies, C.F. Goodey's paradigm-shifting study traces the rich interplay between labelled human types and the radically changing characteristics attributed to them. From the twelfth-century beginnings of European social administration to the onset of formal human science disciplines in the modern era, A History of Intelligence and 'Intellectual Disability' reconstructs the socio-political and religious contexts of intellectual ability and disability, and demonstrates how these concepts became part of psychology, medicine and biology. Goodey examines a wide array of classical, late medieval and Renaissance texts, from popular guides on conduct and behavior to medical treatises and from religious and philosophical works to poetry and drama. Focusing especially on the period between the Protestant Reformation and 1700, Goodey challenges the accepted wisdom that would have us believe that 'intelligence' and 'disability' describe natural, trans-historical realities. Instead, Goodey argues for a model that views intellectual disability and indeed the intellectually disabled person as recent cultural creations. His book is destined to become a standard resource for scholars interested in the history of psychology and medicine, the social origins of human self-representation, and current ethical debates about the genetics of intelligence. Children's Exploration and Cultural Formation (International Perspectives on Early Childhood Education and Development Book 29) by Mariane Hedegaard (Springer) 4.6 Stars (9 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

This open access book examines the educational conditions that support cultures of exploration in kindergartens. It conceptualises cultures of exploration, whether those cultures are created through children's own engagement or are demanded of them through undertaking specific tasks within different institutional settings. It shows how the conditions for children's exploration form a web of activities in different settings with social relationships, local landscapes and artefacts. The book builds on the understanding of cultural traditions as deeply implicated in the developmental processes, meaning that local considerations must be reflected in education for sustainable futures. Therefore the book examines and conceptualises exploration and cultural formation through locally situated cases and navigates toward global educational concepts. The book provides different windows into how children may explore in everyday practice settings in kindergarten, and contributes to a loci-based, ecological, integral knowledge relevant for early childhood education.

Understanding Willing Participants, Volume 2: Milgram’s Obedience Experiments and the Holocaust by Nestar Russell (Palgrave Macmillan) 4.1 Stars (54 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

Horrified by the Holocaust, social psychologist Stanley Milgram wondered if he could recreate the Holocaust in the laboratory setting. Unabated for more than half a century, his (in)famous results have continued to intrigue scholars. Based on unpublished archival data from Milgram's personal collection, volume one of this two-volume set introduces readers to a behind the scenes account showing how during Milgram's unpublished pilot studies he step-by-step invented his official experimental procedure -- how he gradually learnt to transform most ordinary people into willing inflictors of harm. The open access volume two then illustrates how certain innovators within the Nazi regime used the very same Milgram-like learning techniques that with increasing effectiveness gradually enabled them to also transform most ordinary people into increasingly capable executioners of other men, women, and children. Volume two effectively attempts to capture how step-by-step these Nazi innovators attempted to transform the Führer's wish of a Jewish-free Europe into a frightening reality. By the books' end the reader will gain an insight into how the seemingly undoable can become increasingly doable.

Children and Peace: From Research to Action (Peace Psychology Book Series) by Nikola Balvin (Springer) 4.7 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

This open access book brings together discourse on children and peace from the 15th International Symposium on the Contributions of Psychology to Peace, covering issues pertinent to children and peace and approaches to making their world safer, fairer and more sustainable. The book is divided into nine sections that examine traditional themes (social construction and deconstruction of diversity, intergenerational transitions and memories of war, and multiculturalism), as well as contemporary issues such as Europe's "migration crisis", radicalization and violent extremism, and violence in families, schools and communities. Chapters contextualize each issue within specific social ecological frameworks in order to reflect on the multiplicity of influences that affect different outcomes and to discuss how the findings can be applied in different contexts. The volume also provides solutions and hope through its focus on youth empowerment and peacebuilding programs for children and families. This forward-thinking volume offers a multitude of views, approaches, and strategies for research and activism drawn from peace psychology scholars and United Nations researchers and practitioners. This book's multi-layered emphasis on context, structural determinants of peace and conflict, and use of research for action towards social cohesion for children and youth has not been brought together in other peace psychology literature to the same extent. Children and Peace: From Research to Action will be a useful resource for peace psychology academics and students, as well as social and developmental psychology academics and students, peace and development practitioners and activists, policy makers who need to make decisions about the matters covered in the book, child rights advocates and members of multilateral organizations such as the UN.

Investigating the Body in the Victorian Asylum: Doctors, Patients, and Practices (Mental Health in Historical Perspective) by Jennifer Wallis (Palgrave Macmillan) 4.4 Stars (45 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book explores how the body was investigated in the late nineteenth-century asylum in Britain. As more and more Victorian asylum doctors looked to the bodily fabric to reveal the 'truth' of mental disease, a whole host of techniques and technologies were brought to bear upon the patient's body. These practices encompassed the clinical and the pathological, from testing the patient's reflexes to dissecting the brain. Investigating the Body in the Victorian Asylum takes a unique approach to the topic, conducting a chapter-by-chapter dissection of the body. It considers how asylum doctors viewed and investigated the skin, muscles, bones, brain, and bodily fluids. The book demonstrates the importance of the body in nineteenth-century psychiatry as well as how the asylum functioned as a site of research, and will be of value to historians of psychiatry, the body, and scientific practice.

This in-depth survey of salutogenesis shows the breadth and strengths of this innovative perspective on health promotion, health care, and wellness. Health and Wellbeing in Late Life: Perspectives and Narratives from India by Prasun Chatterjee (Springer) 4.4 Stars (20 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

This open access book takes a multidisciplinary approach to provide a holistic understanding of late old age, and situates the aged person within the context of family, caregivers, clinical and other institutions. All through the book, the author discusses preparedness for an aging individual as well as the society in the Indian context. The book highlights inevitable but mostly neglected health issues like depression, dementia, fall, and frailty and provides detailed analyses of solutions that are practicable in low resource settings. It also brings up intergenerational differences and harmony in the context of holistic care of older Indians. Alongside clinical perspectives, the book uses narratives of elderly patients to dwell on the myriad of problems and issues that constitute old age healthcare. Demonstrating cases that range from the most influential to the most underprivileged elderly in India, the book enlightens multiple caregivers -- doctors, nurses, and professional caregivers as well as family members -- about the dynamic approach required in dealing with complex issues related to late old age. The narratives make the book relatable and interesting to non-academic readers, with important lessons for gerontological and geriatric caregiving. It is also of use to older adults in preparing for active aging.
