Ancient Greece: Greek Gods, Spartans, Greek Mythology and The Trojan Horse (Ancient Greece History Books) by Patrick Auerbach 4.0 Stars (24 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

About 2,500 years ago, Greece was one of the most important places in the ancient world. The Greeks were great thinkers, warriors, writers, actors, athletes, artists, architects and politicians. The Greeks called themselves 'Hellenes' and their land was 'Hellas'. The name 'Greeks' was given to the people of Greece later by the Romans. They lived in mainland Greece and the Greek islands, but also in colonies scattered around the Mediterranean Sea. There were Greeks in Italy, Sicily, Turkey, North Africa, and as far west as France. They sailed the sea to trade and find new lands. The Greeks took their ideas with them and they started a way of life that's similar to the one we have today. There was never one country called 'ancient Greece'. Instead, Greece was divided up into small 'city-states', like Athens, Sparta, Corinth and Olympia. Greek Gods The ancient Greeks believed there were a great number of gods and goddesses. These gods had control over many different aspects of life on earth. In many ways they were very human. They could be kind or mean, angry or pleasant, cruel or loving. They fell in love with each other, argued with each other and even stole from each other. The ancient Greeks built great temples and sanctuaries to their gods. They held festivals in their honour, with processions, sports, sacrifices and competitions. Stories of the gods' exploits were told to children by their mothers and to large audiences by professional bards and storytellers. People today still enjoy hearing stories about the Greek gods. Spartans Proud Xerxes, Emperor of Persia and King of Kings, invades Greece with a million soldiers. He commands thousands of ships and is supported by dozens of allies, among them the charming Queen Artemisia. At Thermopylae, a rocky mountain pass in northern Greece, the feared and admired Spartan soldiers stood three hundred strong. Theirs was a suicide mission, to hold the pass against the invading millions of the mighty Persian ...

1982 Lebanon War: A History from Beginning to End (Palestine Israeli Conflict) by Hourly History 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified one minute ago

Discover the remarkable history of the 1982 Lebanon War... Free BONUS Inside! The politics and recent history of the Middle East can seem baffling to outsiders. Nowhere was that more evident than during the Lebanon War that raged in 1982. Even contemporary reporting often made fundamental mistakes, and there was little general understanding of what was happening and why. This conflict involved a bewildering number of groups and influences from different parts of the world. The precipitating event was the attempted assassination of the Israeli ambassador in London, carried out by members of a Palestinian terrorist group. In response, Israel's armed forces, the IDF, launched an invasion of Lebanon in which the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) had established its own army. The IDF also found themselves fighting against the armed forces of Syria. Some Lebanese served in the forces directed by Syria, some fought with Palestinian groups, while others aligned themselves with Israel. The outcome was a savage and confusing war that brought misery and suffering to the majority of ordinary people of Lebanon and turned parts of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, into a war-torn wasteland. While the invasion of Lebanon was a military victory for Israel, it notably failed to bring peace or stability to this region. This is the complex and tragic story of the 1982 Lebanon War. Discover a plethora of topics such as • The Palestinian Liberation Organization • The Lebanese Civil War • Operation Peace for Galilee • Operation Mole Cricket 19 • The Siege of Beirut • Aftermath • And much more! Mysticism in Nepal and Tibet, The Himalayan Journals of M.G. Hawking, An Exploratory Anthology by M.G. Hawking 4.4 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified 4 minutes ago

An Exploratory Anthology: There has long been a deep desire felt by scholars, both past and present, to recover the silent secrets of the ancient cultures of Tibet and Nepal, to trace the background of their prehistoric spiritual development as derived from ever earlier cultures, and then to discover whatever modern manifestations might still exist in the remote margins of that mysterious world. This desire has exerted a powerful pull on the imaginations of Westerners -- historians, philologists, Tibetologists, philosophers, and psi researchers alike. Composed from the journals and field notes of explorer M.G. Hawking's five years in remote areas of the Himalayas, this book transports the reader into regions of our planet that in all history only a handful of people have experienced, a journey that leads to the discovery of the most refined and powerful mystical knowledge possessed by the human race. 'Mystical' adj. 1.1 Existing apart from and not subject to the limitations of the material universe; 1.3 Of hidden or esoteric meaning; 2.0 Inspiring a sense of spiritual mystery, awe, and fascination; 2.1 Concerned with the soul or spirit, rather than with material things; 2.2 Having a spiritual meaning or reality that is neither apparent to the senses nor obvious to the intelligence. Oxford English Dictionary, Oxford University Press, 2nd Ed., 1989. Experience has proven that this mystical knowledge offers the illumination and guidance necessary to create a superlative life, but of which few have a full appreciation. If truly understood through patient study, fully integrated into your core belief system, and practiced with unwavering diligence, this knowledge can wholly transform your experience of this world in every positive way imaginable. Many years ago, on an extended trek into a largely unexplored inner region of the vast wilderness of the Himalayas, Hawking chanced on an unexpected find. In a majestic valley surrounded by towering ice peaks, he ...

Liverpool to Kirkby Fields: A glimpse at life in a 1950-60s overspill town. by Kate Higgins 3.7 Stars (36 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

A tale of a personal account of a childhood spent in Kirkby, the first of the Liverpool overspill towns to develop - the story takes me back over 35 years to when my dad was employed during the second world war as a civil servant at the Royal Ordnance factory. With a population of around 3,000 made up mainly of farming people, the pretty little town was just a few years later to be developed into the new town with population figures reaching 50,000 at its peak. As I walk through Kirkby Park estate, 35 years since I left Kirkby, I recall the people, the events, Liverpool's working life and social life, and the humour which together made me and my seven brothers and sisters who we are today. I note the changes we lived through, the days when our telephone was the one in the red box on the corner of the road; our first television set; to today's technological world; scenes through the years of family life, school days where the remnants of Victoriana ran parallel with Beatlemania in the "Swinging Sixties", and of how mum and dad, quite amazingly, managed to take all ten of us on holiday each year.I recall local ghost stories told to me over the years and although my lifelong interest in the supernatural never produced any ghosts, I do relate what happened the moment I was told my mum had died, fifteen years after dad had also died, which led me to believe that he was there for her that day. We were inspired by mum and dad, with their legacy of love, selflessness, work ethics and honesty, and last but never to be forgotten, the ability to see the funny side.

Saints & Scoundrels: Colorful Characters of Arizona (Wild West History) by Julie McDonald 4.1 Stars (43 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

I love my home state of Arizona! My family has been here for over 100 years. With some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet, it is indeed a land of color and contrast. Equally colorful are the many characters who have called Arizona home. John Shaw was killed in 1905 in a gun fight after robbing cowboys who were gambling in a saloon. He was buried where he fell and was dug up the next day by the same cowboys he robbed; to be given one last drink of whiskey. Arizona's lovable outlaw, Climax Jim, who escaped numerous prison cells. Dollie Wiley had a revolving door of husbands and her constant companions--diamonds and rat poison. Hi Jolly and his herd of camels in Western Arizona. The amazing Navajo Code Talkers and their role in World War II. The honeymoon disappearance of Glen and Bessie Hyde, and many more. Good men and bad women, bad men and good women. I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as I enjoyed writing them. Here's to FUN history!

Siren's Song: The Allure of War by Antonio M. Salinas 4.3 Stars (33 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

"First you will come to the Sirens who enchant all who come near them. If anyone unwarily draws in too close and hears the singing of the Sirens, his wife and children will never welcome him home again, for they sit in a green field and warble him to death with the sweetness of their song. "There is a great heap of dead men's bones lying all around, with the flesh still rotting off them. Therefore pass these Sirens by, and stop your men's ears with wax that none of them may hear." (Odyssey. Book 12, 188-191). Everyone dreams. However, some of us dream about a nightmare that is a timeless character in civilization: war. The Siren's Song of war has a hold upon much of mankind, in that some of us are drawn to it like nothing else. Some of us fantasize about this experience called war. We read books, watch movies, and play video games about combat. Some wonder if they'd be brave enough to face the enemy and stare death in its face. Others wonder what the sound of a bullet flying overhead makes or how it feels to lay eyes upon the enemy for the first time. Do you wonder what war is like? This is a story of one man who was captivated by the Siren's call to war. The Sirens of war awaited him in the Pesh River Valley of Kunar Province, Afghanistan. There in Kunar, he finally learned the truth about war. If you are curious about this nightmare, or perhaps lived through it yourself, you are welcome to share in this journey. You will walk amongst the training grounds and experience war. These are one man's reflections of combat, taken from his war journal and originally written within hours of firefights, while his ears were still ringing from the cacophony of battle that all warriors intimately know. You are invited to this Afghanistan, a place where savage beauty and death coexist in every moment and with every breath.

When the Airlines Went to War by Robert J. Serling 4.4 Stars (222 Reviews)    Price verified one minute ago

The Dramatic, untold Story of America's Civilian Air Warriors In the East, Japan had invaded China. In the West, Europe was being overrun by Hitler's war machine. And in the U.S., America's commercial airlines were stepping into a vital role that would make the difference between victory and defeat... From Robert J. Serling, one of America's most honored aviation authors, comes a dramatic chronicle of the glory days of the propellor plane, when the young, ambitious domestic airlines -- led by shrewd, independent-minded businessmen -- met up with military olive drab. It is the story of airline pioneers and pilots, mechanics and engineers, who overnight learned the art of night and transoceanic flying, moving cargo that included troops, ammunition and medicine, and were kept running by ingenious mechanics who borrowed from visiting planes. A must-read book for aviation fans and World War II history buffs, When the Airlines Went to War takes you inside the hulls of the transport planes, through harrowing, secret missions from Newfoundland to India and Guadalcanal, and into the top-level meetings between the airline owners and Roosevelt's White House that led to the development of the ATC (Air Transport Command) and the NATS (Naval Air Transport Service). A story of courageous pilots and remarkable flying feats, this is also a history of how a fledgling industry developed into a crucial military operation, and how it came out of the war not only victorious, but ready to change the shape and pace of air travel forever. Robert J. Serling has written about flying in fiction (The President's Plane Is Missing, Air Force One Is Haunted) and nonfiction; this is his seventh book on aviation. He and his wife live in Tucson, Arizona.

The bear and the swastika: Book 1 of the Axis Alternate series by Max Lamirande 4.1 Stars (186 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

The year is 1939. The World rocks with the news of the signing of the Germano-Soviet pact. A dark veil soon falls on Europe as Poland is invaded and destroyed by the overwhelming forces of the Wehrmacht and the Red Army. France and the United Kingdom can only sit by and watch the two military juggernauts obliterate the Polish state. No one believes the two totalitarian regimes can agree in the long term as their ideologies completely contradict each other. Russia wants influence in the Balkans, has eyes on Finland, and wants an opening to the Mediterranean. Germany needs Romanian oil to keep its war machine operational, and Hitler is adamant about not letting the Bolsheviks gain another inch of ground in Europe. At least not more than he has already given out in the treaty of non-aggression signed before the Polish campaign. The year is 1940. The French campaign unfolds with a disaster for the Allies, and the Germans win an incredible victory over the combined forces of the United Kingdom and France. British forces narrowly escape to their island with the remnants of their armies, and France surrenders. The Germans occupy half of the country. It seems that the swastika will conquer the world, especially with the Russian bear watching its back. All the while, the Battle of England rages between the Luftwaffe and the Royal Air Force. The fate of the last free nation of Europe hangs in the balance. Will the courageous Brits and their new Prime Minister Winston Churchill prevail? And then something happens in Asia. Russo-Japanese again attack each other at Khalkin Gol, as they did a year earlier. Only this time, Stalin feels quite secure with his German alliance and decides that he has had enough of Imperial Japan in Manchuria. Red Army troops are sent east while Japanese Imperial forces mobilize throughout the Empire. War is all but unavoidable between the two powers. Germano-Soviet talks are organized in August 1940. The subject is nothing less than the ...
