Cryptography in World War I: The History of the Efforts to Make and Break Secret Codes during the Great War by Charles River Editors Price verified 5 hours ago

World War I stood apart in many ways from earlier wars, not least in the way that it reached to nearly every corner of the planet and involved a noticeable segment of humanity's collective resources. Battles erupted not only on land and the sea's surface as they had for centuries, but also in the ocean depths and the windswept heights of the sky. Nearly every conceivable terrain saw use as a battlefield: the neat farmland and small towns of Western Europe; the streets of major cities; thick forests; open steppes stretching for hundreds of miles; deserts in Africa; rugged mountain ranges; and many other regions of the globe. But one of the war's most crucial struggles happened in the realm of the unseen, inside the human mind and amid the invisible flow of radio waves. Every war is a battle of wits as intelligence-gathering, tactics, and strategies clash, from the level of individual action up to the grand, overarching schemes of generals and statesmen. Intelligence took on a freshly urgent aspect in the Great War, however, as the fates of offensives, armies, and nations came to hang on the struggle to decrypt vital enemy radio traffic and military communications. World War I was also the first major conflict in which new electronic means of transmitting and receiving messages became a major factor in political and military operations. The electric telegraph was developed in the first half of the 19th century, and by 1850, there were several telegraph companies around the world providing a service that allowed virtually instantaneous communication over long distances. This was a major breakthrough, but the telegraph depended on the availability of wires to transmit messages between stations, meaning that if these wires were broken or damaged, communications were cut off. Late in the 19th century, there was another new development, the telephone, though this too relied on wires to transmit and receive information. At the same time, there was a new invention that ...

Desperate Journey: Escape from Burma in 1942, through 900 miles of arduous, Japanese-occupied territory by Francis Clifford (Lume Books) 4.5 Stars (320 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

"This is a story of escape; a true account of how a dwindling group of soldiers made their way to safety through nearly a thousand miles of Japanese-occupied territory in the teeth of the monsoon." On 20th April 1942, Captain Thompson received word that the defensive line held by their Chinese allies had broken; orders or no orders, he knew they had to move. Separated from the rest of the Burma Army and weary from months of continuous fighting retreats, the survivors of his Karen Company began their long walk northwards. In the suffocating Burmese jungle the days turned to weeks, the weeks into months, and all the while the mental decay kept pace with their physical deterioration. And yet, with such indomitable men as Subedar-Major Kan Choke and Subedar Ba Gyaw at Thompson's side, his Company clung to each other and endured. When Fort Hertz finally came into view in August, the journey of nine hundred miles and untold maladies had left many of them little more than walking skeletons. Written in 1944 but remaining unseen for over thirty years, Desperate Journey is an extraordinary true story of human endeavour, of faith, courage, tenacity and mutual trust in the face of insurmountable odds. Praise for Francis Clifford: 'Not since Graham Greene was creating his adventures has there been a writer with such haunting quality, the sweet sound of sad beauty, which Clifford engenders' - New York Herald Tribune 'Mr. Clifford constructs an anatomy of fear, drawing in with fine, sharp lines the exposed and shrinking nerves' - The Times Francis Clifford is a pen name of Arthur Leonard Bell Thompson , a British writer of crime and thriller novels. He was born in Bristol, served with great distinction in the Second World War, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.

The Auschwitz Chapter is an historically complete, precise and definitive account of what took place at Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II, where crimes against humanity were perpetrated by Nazis against Jews, Slavs, Roma, political prisoners, homosexuals, and artists. And all humanity. This Auschwitz Chapter is taken from Lee Vidor's novel, Under Total Eclipse We Will Tremble Like Birds Without Song, which is an historically accurate fictional account of Europe under Nazi Occupation. Even though The Auschwitz Chapter is only a concise single chapter in the novel, more than 2 years were spent researching every existing published eyewitness account of imprisonment at Auschwitz, in order to ensure complete accuracy. It is not suitable for reading by those under 18 years of age. Many more reviews of Lee Vidor books can be found at http://www.goodreads.com/author/list/4938461.Lee_Vidor Lee Vidor states: 'I believe I missed no eyewitness testimonies and that the account here given is absolutely accurate in every detail. It is the most specific and accurate description of events and processes at Auschwitz which exists. Every single detail in The Auschwitz Chapter has been confirmed from more than one eyewitness source, from photographic evidence and court documents. I believe it is the single most reliable and harrowing piece of literary writing ever done on the subject of the events which took place in the Nazi concentration camps during World War II.' Although fictional, the piece contains many precise facts which are extremely difficult to uncover and which are coherently gathered together nowhere else with such accuracy and completeness. Herein lies its enduring value. The Auschwitz Chapter is available for publication, completely free of charge, to all academic text book publishers anywhere in the world, who wish to publish it unedited in an educational text. +++ New revised edition +++ First part of a two-volume novel set during the reigns of Amunhotep III and his son Akhenaten The young physician Senmut leads a quiet life that revolves entirely around his patients and his family. The peace is shattered when he finds the body of a stranger on his doorstep, whose obviously violent death is shrouded in mystery. The few tantalizing clues Senmut is able to gather only add to the confusion. Then Senmut is called upon to cure the ailing pharaoh as a matter of urgency to enable him to celebrate his second Sed-Festival. Senmut is at a loss why of all people he, the low-ranking nameless physician, is chosen for this daunting task. Is it really only because of his professional ability, or are there other, more sinister reasons he is unaware of? Why is he bound to absolute secrecy, and why are people trying to kill him? And has the dead stranger anything to do with any of this? The harder Senmut tries to find the answers to these questions, the deeper the mystery gets. Years full of uncertainty go by until the secret is finally unravelled. But there is a price to be paid, as the knowledge is connected with yet another task. A task that causes everything else he has done so far to pale into insignificance. The story is continued in "Curse of the Sun" (The Saviour of the Two Lands Book 2).

The Disappearance of the Surcouf: The Mysterious Sinking of the Allies’ Largest Submarine during World War II by Charles River Editors Price verified 12 hours ago

It takes a special type of person to serve in a nation's navy, especially on long voyages that separate men and women from their loved ones, and no service is both loved and hated as that aboard submarines, for very few people ever serve on them on a whim. For one thing, the psychological impact of being trapped for long periods underwater in tight, cramped quarters is more than many people can stand. Also, submarine service is uncharacteristically hazardous; after all, if a surface vessel is sunk, the crew has a reasonable chance of escaping death in lifeboats or being rescued out of the water by another ship. Conversely, if a submarine is badly damaged while submerged, the crew's chances of survival are at best remote. Given that there's such little margin for error in a submersible, many submarine losses remain sources of intrigue and mystery, and during World War II, few sinkings were as controversial as the Surcouf, a Free French submarine that disappeared in the Caribbean in 1942. When the Surcouf launched in 1929, it was a technological marvel. This wasn't a conventional submarine at all, but a 3,300-ton, 300-foot-long submersible light cruiser. Armed not just with torpedoes but also a pair of eight-inch guns, the Surcouf had a range of over 10,000 miles and was equipped with a seaplane in a hanger and a prison capable of holding up to 40 prisoners. When it was launched, the submarine looked like something out of the novels of Jules Verne, and many people believed it would make all existing submarines (and many surface warships) obsolete. On paper, this seemed to be a completely new and potentially lethal form of naval vessel, but in reality, the Surcouf, like other attempts to create such a vessel, had some basic and fundamental flaws. In fact, by the time France found itself at war with Nazi Germany in 1939, the Surcouf was outdated and basically irrelevant, though it was still in active service with the French Navy. When France was defeated by Nazi ...

The Royal Family at War (Theo Aronson Royal History) by Theo Aronson 4.3 Stars (224 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

'This war', wrote Winston Churchill to King George VI at the height of the Second World War, 'has brought throne and people closer together than was ever before recorded.' Here is a full and fascinating account of that coming together. It is a study of the contribution made not only by George VI and his redoubtable Queen, but also by the entire royal family during those turbulent years, and of how that contribution strengthened and popularized the monarchy. This is a family saga; an account of the lives, as much private as public, of all the diverse members of what George VI called 'The Firm'. Together with the tireless efforts of the King and Queen, it deals with such aspects as the Duke of Windsor's flirtation with fascism, the mysterious death of the Duke of Kent, the activities of the Athlones in Canada and the Gloucesters in Australia, and the imprisonment of the Princess Royal's eldest son, Viscount Lascelles. Occasionally tragic, often amusing, always interesting, The Royal Family at War is a richly detailed panorama of the monarchy in one of its finest hours. Theo Aronson is the author of over twenty works of royal historical biography including Grandmama of Europe, The King in Love, Napoleon and Josephine and a biography of Princess Margaret. In the course of researching and writing these books he has interviewed major and minor members of Britain's royal family and members of the royal households, as well as various officials, servants, friends and others whose lives are in some way connected with the monarchy.

Lost World of the Himalayas, The Journals of Explorer M.G. Hawking by M.G. Hawking 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 11 hours ago

Composed from the journals of explorer M.G. Hawking's five years in remote areas of the Himalayas, this book transports the reader into a legendary lost world, a journey that leads to the discovery of the most refined and powerful knowledge possessed by the human race. Many years ago, on an extended trek into an inner region of the vast wilderness of the Great Himalayan Range, Hawking chanced on an unexpected find. In a majestic valley surrounded by towering ice peaks, he encountered a beautiful small village. In that community, called Siddhalaya by its residents, he had the privilege of meeting a number of truly extraordinary men and women. This encounter marked the beginning of sixty-two months Hawking spent in the Himalayan regions of Nepal and Tibet, during which time he kept detailed records of his adventures, experiences, and conversations with those highly enlightened individuals. Over the past several years the team at Wisdom Masters Press, in association with Hawking, has worked diligently to compose a series of books based on his journals and field notes. This was a daunting assignment; Hawking had accumulated hundreds of pages of hand-written journal entries and field notes, all of which had to be sorted and cataloged. Yet it was a fascinating if formidable task, one that could not have been accomplished without the assistance and encouragement of some of the extraordinary individuals Hawking met in the Himalayas, all of whom you will meet in the pages of our books. From the Author: "The knowledge of the masters is profound and powerful, and one hopes it will have relevance to others, will offer them insight and guidance, will greatly expand their knowledge and power, will be validated by their experience, or, at the very least, will stimulate them to search further on their own. The philosophy expressed by the masters reflects as well the broader context and search of our culture at this particular stage of its development. The evolutionary ...

The Lost City of Antarctica, Ancient Earth’s First Civilization by M.G. Hawking 3.1 Stars (29 Reviews)    Price verified 12 hours ago

Explore Evidence of an Ancient Lost City on the Antarctic Continent. For decades the archaeological community labored under the theory that human civilization began only following the last Ice Age. Contemporary discoveries have dramatically undermined that conjecture. Modern research has unearthed hidden cities one after another -- archaeology now reconstructs an unsuspected antiquity of man and paints a canvas of stunningly mysterious dimensions. Previous academic accounts of the origins of civilization have fallen forfeit to evidence from archaeological sites worldwide, including Thebes (c. 37,900 BC), Edfu (c. 18,000 BC), Turkey (c. 12,000 BC), Bolivia (c. 15,000 BC), Indonesia (c. 22,000 BC), and most intriguingly, in Antarctica. To explore these remarkable finds and their implications, the explorations in this book are organized as follows: ? Part I: The Ancient Civilizations -- Provides archaeological background and information regarding the pre-Younger Dryas Boundary event civilizations, circa 10,770 BC or earlier, and the known cataclysmic astronomical events that eradicated most evidence of prehistoric civilization from the historical record. Examines the ancient traditions and extant evidence of the accomplishments and technology of currently known ancient cultures. ? Part II: A Very Ancient City in Antarctica -- Provides a detailed account of the satellite imaging evidence for the remains of an extensive Paleocene civilization existing under the ice of Antarctica, including "intelligently-made structures, resembling some sort of pyramidal and rectangular buildings." Also examines the ice-core derived, isotopic record from the Paleogene and Neogene geologic periods indicating that the infrastructure of an advanced civilization existed on the Antarctic continent approximately 55.5 million years ago, and may have been inhabited for 300,000 or more years. Examines additional evidence of anomalous high-energy particles emitting from the Antarctic ice ...

Stories from Gaza by Sebastiano Vottari 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 15 hours ago

This book is an intense exploration of daily life in Gaza, a region marked by decades of Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The author immerses himself in stories of ordinary suffering, courage and resilience, detaching himself from the common media narrative. Through personal and direct testimonies, the book illustrates the human and touching reality of those who live in an area of constant instability. Telling stories of families, women and children, the work highlights how conflict profoundly impacts everyday life, influencing hopes, dreams and the struggle for survival. From the stories: "Imagine losing the partner of your life, the love of your soul, the beat of your heart at a time when the occupiers have decided to take away your entire life" "There is still time to save thousands of children who scream every day and night in fear, terror, sadness and pain in a collective cry for help" "They had said goodbye to me in so many ways in the midst of the frenzy of the days and I hadn't been able to understand that it was goodbye. They left me halfway and we still had so many dreams and promises to come true" "The one you cried with, laughed with, the one you told all your secret stories to... How can a person psychologically accept the total absence of the love of his life?" "They are not just numbers... they have names, places, stories and tales, houses, jobs, dreams and desires. They had everything. There were many chapters of happiness that were never completed"

Still Water: The Founding of Newcomerstown, Ohio by Christopher Kincaid 3.5 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

Soon after the Delaware chief Netawatwees founded Newcomers-town, the town sat at a crossroads. For a time, Newcomerstown was a pivot of history. The town sat the center of Delaware negotiations with the differing Native American tribes, with England, and with the fledgling United States. The story of Newcomerstown and of early Ohio is a story of "almost." Ohio almost joined the United States as a Native American state. Newcomerstown almost achieved William Penn's ideals of Native American and European coexistence. But history shifted and the "almost" of a lasting peace disappeared.

Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana 4.5 Stars (563 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

In this nineteenth-century nautical memoir, a Harvard man sails around the tip of South America to California -- and returns with this classic tale of adventure. In 1834, nineteen-year-old Richard Henry Dana left Harvard University to enlist as a deckhand on a brig sailing from Boston to the California coast. For the next two years, he recorded the terrifying storms, awe-inspiring beauty, and dreadful hardships of the journey in a diary he would later expand into this riveting memoir of "the life of a common sailor at sea as it really is." Dana spares no detail in portraying the wretched conditions he endured and the cruelty of the ship's captain, but he also paints vivid, unforgettable pictures of natural wonders such as icebergs and schools of migrating whales. His descriptions of the missions and presidios of pre-Gold Rush California captured the imagination of the country when the book was first published in 1840, and they serve as valuable historical documentation to this day. An instant classic and inspiration for contemporaries such as Herman Melville, Two Years Before the Mast is one of the most remarkable and influential adventure stories in American literature. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

ALFRED THE GREAT: Myths, Legends & History by KIV Books 4.2 Stars (49 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

Alfred the Great was not likely to be king if the circumstances of his life did not happen. He was the youngest son of Aethelwulf, king of Wessex and he had four elder brothers who were in line to succeed in the throne. Yet, as if in an act of fate, his father and all his older brothers died during the invasion of the Vikings. You can say that greatness was in him and yet greatness was thrown into his lap as things turned from good to worse. One of the great hallmarks of his life was the defense of England against the Danes. Yet he was more scholar than warrior. In fact, one of the best things he was known for is the provision of education to the commoners in their native English language. In this book you will catch a glimpse into the life and struggles of Alfred the Great. The book covers his exploits, his weaknesses, and all the things that made him great. Like all historic figures from centuries past, his actual history has been blurred in a mixture of fact, fiction, myth, and legend. This book will try to reconstruct the high and low points of his life and retell the reasons why he is the only king in all of England to be called The Great.

VIKINGS: Myths, Legends & History by KIV Books 3.9 Stars (63 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

Wildly swinging axes and swords upon majestic boats, Vikings have been a long-appreciated symbol of rage and power. They have been romanticized as overbearingly-manly warriors that plunder, loot and pillage villages all for the sake of dominance. They've always been in modern media, but where did they come from? How did they start? What brought them to the apex of influence that still makes them relevant up to this day? Their colorful history starts in the form of a migration. These warriors started out as nomads looking for new places to inhabit to prolong their lineage. Mainly travelling by sea, they've been defined as pirates that went from shore to shore, trading and occupying the villages that lived on the patches of land they would visit. Said to have hailed from the countries of Sweden, Norway and Denmark, these seafaring people made their mark in the world from 700AD to 1100AD. That's more than 300 years of colorful and bloody history. The earliest accounts of known Viking activity date all the way back to the 11th century in Lindisfarne, an island lying along the northern edges of England. From there, the northern origins of these warriors were sculpted. This account wasn't a friendly one, though. The warriors were said to have looted and burned the church and other structures to the ground. Monks at that time were either killed or brought along as slaves when the Vikings were done with the area. That point marked the beginning of years and years of attacks and loots under the Viking flags. Even the origin of their name comes from a derivation of the Scandinavian term for "pirate" which is "vikingr". From that point, their influence spread all throughout Europe, cementing their names in the annals of scholars and monks during those times. While a large number of them pillaged and looted, other Vikings ended up as farmers and traders that settled in some of the lands they visited. Their influence spread over the European lands like an epidemic, reaching all ...

Theirs is a tale that transcends mere chronicles of war and governance, metamorphosing into an epic saga of ambition, valor, and an unyielding quest for immortality. As you turn the pages of this book, you will journey through the labyrinthine corridors of Byzantine power, where every whisper could be a death sentence and every alliance, a double-edged sword. Emperor Justinian, the architect of dreams, envisioned a Rome reborn from the ashes of its own decay. This book promises more than a historical recounting; it pledges to unveil secrets that have been shrouded in mystery for over a millennium. CROSSING OVER: Testimonies/Counters by Theodulo NKhoma 4.8 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

The book will help anyone to have faith in God. A boat or steamer crossing a river which has full of water crossing from one bank of a river to the other side of the bank on the banks there are people and trees. The book is about my life as I left work on early retirement. I also lost a dwelling in town. When I was at work, I trained at a bible school. I learned Pastor ology. I went to church to join as a pastor. I was there for only seven months then problems emerged at the village and I went there. I used to move from the village to cities and districts to locate relatives and friends for help but many friends deserted me. A book contains real life events. Real life stories. There was unsettlement in my life. The book covers a period of five years. It contains travels, problems and I was fighting to make ends meet. I was displaced but there was divine intervention. In divine intervention God communicated through visions, dreams, inspiration or revelations, voices or visits by angels. Crossing over is about trying to catch up in life where there was unsettlement and displacement in my life. I met many things as I moved from one stage to another. High light in the book. I was still writing. I used to go to cites to have my books printed. I could spend a whole day travelling. I could go to a publishing house and would be told to come another time to check if books were printed. When I got books, I could go to former friends where I used to work to sell books. These bought because they knew me. The money was for consumption. From fiends I would go to streets selling books. The first cross over is moving from a working life to do different things all together in order to make a living. I met several people and knew people from all walks of life. Buyers of books most of time wanted to be offered credit terms. In order to sell I had to do that. I went to town once more for in rainy season I could not build a house in the village. The allowance I was getting as ...

The Formation of Saudi Arabia: The History of the Arabian Peninsula’s Unification and the Discovery of Oil by Charles River Editors 3.8 Stars (31 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

*Includes pictures *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents At the conclusion of World War I, a once promised unified Arab state, which was to include the modern Hejaz, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine/Israel, Jordan and Iraq, did not materialize. Instead, the territories were divided between the French and British, but the British did reward the Hashemites by putting local leaders on the thrones of Iraq and Jordan. In 1924, when the revolutionary government of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk declared Turkey a secular state and abolished the Caliphate, the Sharif (now King) declared himself Caliph, and it appeared that a new Arab-based Caliphate centered on Mecca would emerge . However, this was also not to be, because the Saudis had reformed their power base in central Arabia. While the First Saudi state had been shattered in 1818 by Muhammad Ali Pasha, in 1824 another branch of the Saudi Clan had captured Riyadh, making it the capital of their more cautious Second Saudi State. Their growth had been slow for some time, but they took advantage of the crumbling Ottoman Empire to consolidate power and in 1925 attacked the Hejaz. With that, the Saudis stormed Mecca and drove out the Hashemite Clan. Like the Hashemites, the Saudi family consisted of Arabs, but the family came from the Nejd, an area of the Arabian Peninsula to the east closer to the Persian Gulf. In the late 18th century, the ambitious Muhammed bin Saud, the head of the family and the Sultan of Nejd, allied himself with a theologian named Muhammad ibn ?Abd al-Wahhab (1703-1792). Wahhab taught that Islam's weakened position (compared to the rising Christian powers of his era) was due to an internal weakness within the Islamic community. He taught that increasing numbers of Muslims had turned their backs on the teachings of the Prophet and had corrupted Islam with pagan influences. He was particularly scornful of Shi'a Islam or any practices that he did not ...

The CSS Alabama: The History of the Famous Confederate Raider that Sank Off the Coast of France during the Battle of Cherbourg by Charles River Editors 4.0 Stars (33 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the Alabama's raids and battles written by its sailors and captain *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "God helps those who help themselves." - The motto of the Alabama After the first year of the Civil War, the Confederacy was faced with a serious problem. While the South had enjoyed some stunning victories on land, they had been all but cut off from the world at sea. The more industrialized North had realized that in case of an extended war, the best way to defeat the Confederacy was to starve it of supplies. The rebels started the war with no real navy to speak of, and so the federal government quickly set up a blockade of all Southern ports and river mouths. By depriving the South of revenues derived from its main export, cotton, the North seriously injured the Southern economy. Without European intervention and the ability to build a navy that could rival the Union's, the Confederacy was mostly reduced to token resistance and using fast moving ships that could evade the blockade and import and export goods. Again, that was only partially successful, and today, the blockade runners are better known for their extracurricular activities; most notably, some of the crews also acted as privateers on the high seas, attacking U.S. shipping and taking any loot for themselves. The daring exploits of these commerce raiders caught the imagination of Southern soldiers and civilians and buoyed up morale, even as the war news turned increasingly grim. Among all the Confederate commerce raiders, by far the most famous was the CSS Alabama. The Alabama attacked American ships and eluded the U.S. Navy around the globe for more than two years, all without ever having docked at a Southern port. The Alabama conducted seven expeditions, raiding commerce in locations as diverse as the Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Atlantic Ocean, capturing dozens of prizes across tens of ...

The United States is still freshly reeling from the cataclysmic stock market crash the previous October, and is desperately attempting to claw its way out from the slippery pits of the Great Depression. 4,000 miles away, British Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald is struggling himself to prevail over a reality that is as irremediable as it is inextricable: preserving the Gold Standard and providing adequate aid to the poor and unemployed, the latter of which there were reportedly two million of by year's end. The situation in the United Kingdom is comparably dim, for not only had the British also been affected by the crash, they had yet to recover from the lasting wounds of the First World War. It would not be uncommon to see a mob of fuming men posted outside of a labor exchange or the so-called "instructional centers" introduced by Prime Minister MacDonald. These men were armed with not guns, but with placards the length of their torsos. "RELEASE US FROM HUNGER," one placard screamed in bold letters. "WE DEMAND WINTER RELIEF," read another. In another part of town, a number of impoverished families awaited their measly share of gruel, provided to them by a makeshift soup kitchen. The scenes became even more depressing following the setting of the sun. If one took a stroll through the streets of the "rough" neighborhoods, they would see countless silhouettes, large and small, camping out in alleyways, street corners, and embankments, huddled up in a futile attempt to escape the biting frost of winter. It was amidst this bleak atmosphere that a peerlessly profound young mind in South West England first envisioned a concept so momentous that it ultimately led to the creation of what is now considered the ...

The Case of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg: The History of America’s Most Controversial Espionage Trial by Charles River Editors 3.7 Stars (53 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the trial and testimony *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "This death sentence is not surprising. It had to be. There had to be a Rosenberg case, because there had to be an intensification of the hysteria in America to make the Korean War acceptable to the American people. There had to be hysteria and a fear sent through America in order to get increased war budgets. And there had to be a dagger thrust in the heart of the left to tell them that you are no longer gonna get five years for a Smith Act prosecution or one year for contempt of court, but we're gonna kill ya!" - Julius Rosenberg In 1947, President Truman had tried to assure Americans, "I am not worried about the Communist Party taking over the Government of the United States, but I am against a person, whose loyalty is not to the Government of the United States, holding a Government job. They are entirely different things. I am not worried about this country ever going Communist. We have too much sense for that." Nonetheless, shortly after World War II, Congress' House Committee on Un-American Activities began investigating Americans across the country for suspected ties to Communism. The most famous victims of these witch hunts were Hollywood actors, such as Charlie Chaplin, whose "Un-American activity" was being neutral at the beginning of World War II, but at the beginning of the Cold War, America was gripped by the Red Scare. The Red Scare would reach a fever pitch after Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy made waves in 1950 by telling the Republican Women's Club in Wheeling, West Virginia that he had a list of dozens of known Communists working in the State Department. The political theater helped Senator McCarthy become the prominent anti-Communist crusader in the government, and McCarthy continued to claim he held evidence suggesting Communist infiltration throughout the government, but ...

Jubilee: Book One of The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare Series by Conor Bender 4.5 Stars (119 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

Readers of After Dunkirk & Beneath a Scarlet Sky agree, Jubilee is an explosive World War II tale that weaves a story high over the skies of France and England and down on the beaches of Normandy. "JUBILEE is a top-flight World War II thriller that pulses with energy and intrigue... " - Michele Rubin, Cornerstones U.S. From the beaches of Dieppe to the skies over Scotland, from the sub pens of Saint Nazaire to the lofty halls of the War Office. Before OPERATION OVERLORD, there was OPERATION JUBILEE. A cataclysmic waste of life lost on the whims of the political animals of the War Office. Arthur Cutter passed his breaking point long ago. Barely old enough to buy a beer, he was recruited by the SOE out of Oxford. Now, forced to go back behind the lines for one last mission, his journey to retirement will bring him face to face with the French Resistance and will help shape the French theater of war. Hundreds of miles away and twenty thousand feet above him, Ian Faraday, a burned-out American RAF pilot, trains a new crop of pilots in Scotland. As the lines between training and combat blur over the skies of Edinburgh, Faraday must rediscover his edge and ensure his students have what it takes to dogfight the aces of the Luftwaffe. Back in France, Talia Crevier, a member of the French Resistance, struggles to be taken seriously as a member of the Maquis, and not judged by her gender and youth. Finally, there is Malcolm Parker, an American Ranger, sent on a covert mission to study the British Commandos. All their stories weave together in a tense tale of political intrigue, tragic loss, and high stakes as they are all maneuvered behind the scenes by shady political figures in the British War Office. Award-winning, bestselling author Conor Bender delivers a story that twists and turns and drives multiple heroes towards the beaches of Dieppe. Praise for Conor Bender and JUBILEE: "Operation Jubilee is the canvas Bender uses to show political infighting, moral ...

The Roots of Enlightenment: A HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE AGE OF REASON IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY EUROPE by Shoaib Rahman Price verified 11 hours ago

"The Empire of Reason," the distinguished American historian Henry Steele Commager calls the Enlightenment. The French called it the "L'Age des Lumieres," meaning the age of "Light"- understanding, discovery, and insight - a period of legendary thinkers. The period might very well be entitled the Age of Research because people "re-searched" the great questions about the nature of the human-animal, society, and cosmos. Another name might be "The Age of Titans." The works of such representatives of the Enlightenment as Jefferson, Franklin, Adams, Madison, Diderot, d'Alembert, d'Holbach, Condorct, Rousseau, Voltaire, Montesquieu, Condillac, Turgot, David Hume, Jeremy Bentham, George Berkeley, Adam Smith, Edward Gibbon, Johann von Herder, and Gottfried Leibniz recall the gift of the last of the Titans, Prometheus the Firebringer. It is from this Enlightened crucible that Atheism would emerge as a modern system of thought. The Enlightenment was an intellectual movement that swept through the West in the eighteenth century, accelerating by 1750 and cresting in Europe at the time of the French Revolution and somewhat later for the United States. The Enlightenment was strong in England, Holland, Scotland, the United States, and especially in France where it was more organized than elsewhere. The Enlightenment was a loose association of Atheists, deists, and liberal clerics; it was not a school or group which required a person to accept certain tenets. This book briefly discusses the French philosophes, the intellectual leaders of the Enlightenment of seventeenth and eighteenth-century Europe.

Aces' Twilight: The War in the Air 1918 by Robert Jackson 4.2 Stars (285 Reviews)    Price verified one minute ago

The dawn of a new age of warfare and the men who made history... Spring 1918: in the skies above the Western Front a new science was taking shape in action. Unheard of only months before, aerial warfare was rapidly coming of age, bringing a new breed of heroes who would transform the face of battle for ever. Time was running out for the old rulers of the air - the Richthofens, Mannocks and McCuddens who had terrorised the skies unchallenged, secure in their individual genius and daring. New tactics, designs and men were taking to the air, and the newly-formed RAF was introducing a professionalism that would change the course of the war. This is the story of the men who fought in that fateful year - the men whose bitter struggle was to bring about the aces' twilight and the dawn of modern warfare. Robert Jackson was born in 1941 in the North Yorkshire village of Melsonby. A former pilot and navigation instructor, his active involvement with aviation lasted many years. Following his retirement from the RAFVR in 1977 as a squadron leader, he became a full-time aviation writer and aerospace correspondent and lectured extensively on strategic issues. He speaks five languages, including Russian, and has written more than forty nonfiction works on military affairs. He is also the author of the popular Yeoman series.

Remember Flight 93: A True Story of American Courage by Richard Roy Blake 3.0 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 15 hours ago

The story of Flight 93 on 9/11, the story of how a plane that was only a quarter full, thwarted the intention of terrorists to destroy the U.S. Capitol or White House, ought to have been one of the most inspiring, oft repeated, American legends. Sadly this is not the case. Most only know the name of one of the heroic passengers and crew and a single stirring line. Names they most probably do not know include Thomas Burnett, Jr., who in four phone calls to his wife in California realized the hijackers true intentions. They also probably do not know the name of United 93 Jason Dahl, who in his dying act pushed a button which caused the cockpit to broadcast unbeknownst to the terrorists. Or of Jeremy Glick, who in his last phone call clearly knew he was likely to die told his wife he loved her and their new baby, but that the passengers were going to hold a vote to decide whether they were going to try to storm the cockpit. He asked his wife, Lyzbeth, how she thought he ought to vote. Fewer still have probably heard the names of other heroes and heroines such as Cee-Cee Ross Lyles, Mark Bingham, Honor Elizabeth Wainio, Alan Beaven or Mickey Rothenberg. The passengers and crew that survived the initial hijacker takeover placed 35 airphone and two cellphone calls from Flight 93. The actions of the passengers and crew of Flight 93 did more to dissuade 9/11 style hijackings than the billions spent by governments in that same cause. Following the Battle of Britain Winston Churchill praised the brave RAF pilots who saved Britain from Nazi invasion, declaring that "never had so much been owed by so many to so few." That is, until Flight 93.

Living in a Nuclear World: From Fukushima to Hiroshima (History and Philosophy of Technoscience) by Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent (Routledge) Price verified 8 hours ago

The Fukushima disaster invites us to look back and probe how nuclear technology has shaped the world we live in, and how we have come to live with it. Since the first nuclear detonation (Trinity test) and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, all in 1945, nuclear technology has profoundly affected world history and geopolitics, as well as our daily life and natural world. It has always been an instrument for national security, a marker of national sovereignty, a site of technological innovation and a promise of energy abundance. It has also introduced permanent pollution and the age of the Anthropocene. This volume presents a new perspective on nuclear history and politics by focusing on four interconnected themes-violence and survival; control and containment; normalizing through denial and presumptions; memories and futures-and exploring their relationships and consequences. It proposes an original reflection on nuclear technology from a long-term, comparative and transnational perspective. It brings together contributions from researchers from different disciplines (anthropology, history, STS) and countries (US, France, Japan) on a variety of local, national and transnational subjects. Finally, this book offers an important and valuable insight into other global and Anthropocene challenges such as climate change.

Tanks for the Memories: The 712th Tank Battalion in World War II by Aaron Elson 4.8 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

Aaron Elson bought a little Sony Recording Walkman to preserve his father's war stories. His dad passed away two weeks later, and Aaron never got to use it with him. A few years later, he found a newsletter from the 712th Tank Battalion addressed to his dad. He wrote and asked if anybody remembered Lieutenant Elson. He got a letter back inviting him to a reunion. He went, and brought the tape recorder. The rest is history. Oral history. After landing in Normandy three weeks after D-Day, the independent 712th Tank Battalion spent 311 days in combat, many of them on the front lines in support of the 90th "Texas-Oklahoma" Infantry Division. Thanks to its skilled drivers, excellent mechanics, accurate gunners, daring tank commanders and good officers, it became known as the "armored fist" of the 90th Division. These are the people you'll meet in "Tanks for the Memories," in their own words.

Kaleidoscope by Graham Wilson 3.7 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

A place of endless bright colours which fuse in my mind into a kaleidoscope. A remembered story of my family's life in a distant world, on aboriginal land in Australia's Northern Territory, a place like remote Canada or Alaska, where few others go. It is the landscape of Crocodile Dundee, myriad hues of billabongs, open grass plains, sunlit hills and purple storms, peopled by its many coloured children. In a changing world a missionary family and aboriginal community became part of modern Australia over 50 years. What is it about the Northern Territory that fascinates? If I mention its name in conversation and people stop to listen. Why, for nearly 200 years, has it drawn people to come, stay longer than they imagined and often, never leave? This our family's story, growing amongst the people, animals and places and colours of this this strange land, within an aboriginal community going through huge changes; citizenship, alcohol, uranium mining, land rights, outstation development, and community self-management. The role of my father in road transport including building a crossing of the East Alligator River, developing outstations for aboriginal communities, learning to fly on missionary wages and establishing an aviation service along with assisting the aboriginal peoples of this land to gain royalties from mining is a story that deserves to be told as a major part of NT history. Along with his tireless work the contribution of many others to the making of the Northern Territory is the fabric of this story. It also tells of my mother and fathers' lives and Christian beliefs which motivated their contribution to this change. It is a story of my memories and love for this remote and beautiful place, in which I lived as a child then worked as an adult and of many NT characters who gave me the memories. It is also the story of me working as an adult across many parts of the NT and about the hardy, outlandish characters that inhabit this place. It also tells ...

Greek Mythology: Doublepack - Greek Mythology & Greek Gods (Ancient Greece History Books) by Patrick Auerbach 4.0 Stars (33 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

2 Manuscripts Book 1: Greek Mythology - The Ancient Myths and Legends of Greek Mythology Greek Mythology is the body of myths and teachings that belong to the ancient Greeks, concerning their gods and heroes, the nature of the world, and the origins and significance of their own cult and ritual practices. It was a part of the religion in ancient Greece. The Greeks were polytheistic in their religious beliefs. Polytheistic means they believed in and worshiped many different gods. Modern scholars refer to and study the myths in an attempt to shed light on the religious and political institutions of Ancient Greece and its civilization, and to gain understanding of the nature of myth-making itself. In Greek Mythology, the gods often represented different forms of nature. Their religion/mythology had no formal structure with the exception of various festivals held in honor of the gods. There was no sacred book or code of conduct to live by. The most powerful Greek gods were known as the Olympians. The Greeks believed the Olympians lived on the highest mountain in Greece, Mount Olympus. The Olympian gods included: Zeus, Hera, Apollo, Aphrodite, Ares, Artemis, Athena, Demeter, Hades, Hermes, Hephaestus, Poseidon and Hestia or later she was replaced in some lists by Dionysus. Greek Mythology is explicitly embodied in a large collection of narratives, and implicitly in Greek representational arts, such as vase-paintings and votive gifts. Greek myth attempts to explain the origins of the world, and details the lives and adventures of a wide variety of gods, goddesses, heroes, heroines and mythological creatures. These accounts initially were disseminated in an oral-poetic tradition; today the Greek myths are known primarily from Greek literature. The oldest known Greek literary sources, Homer's epic poems Iliad and Odyssey, focus on the Trojan War and its aftermath. Book 2: Greek Gods - The Gods and Goddesses of Greek Mythology The ancient Greeks believed there ...

Egyptian Mythology: Egyptian Gods & Ancient Egypt (Ancient Egypt History Books) by Patrick Auerbach 4.1 Stars (23 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

2 Manuscripts Book 1: Egyptian Gods - The Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt Worshiped for over three-fifths of recorded history, ancient Egypt's Gods and Goddesses are among the most fascinating of human civilization. The lives of pharaohs and commoners alike were dominated by the need to honor, worship, and pacify the huge pantheon of deities. From lavish tomb paintings and imposing temple reliefs to humble household shrines, countless tributes throughout Egypt reflect the richness and complexity of their mythology. This book examines the Egyptian gods and goddesses - from minor household figures such as Bes and Taweret to the all-powerful deities Amun and Rethat made Egypt the most completely theocratic society of the ancient world, and made Egyptians, according to Herodotus, "more religious than any other people." Ancient Egypt has held humanity in its thrall for over 5000 years. The image of the Great Pyramids of the Valley of the Kings rising ghostlike from the white sands of the Sahara Desert is synonymous with the mysteries of the Ancient World. Ancient Egypt was remarkably advanced, especially considering its origins date back 30 centuries before the Common Era. From clocks to the 12-month calendar to agriculture and fashion, we continue to experience the echoes of Ancient Egypt in the world we live in today. Book 2: Ancient Egypt - A Guide to the Gods, Pharaohs, Dynasties, and Traditions of Ancient Egypt Ancient Egypt's impact on later cultures was immense. You could say that Egypt provided the building blocks for Greek and Roman culture, and, through them, influenced all of the Western tradition. Today, Egyptian imagery, concepts, and perspectives are found everywhere; you will find them in architectural forms, on money, and in our day to day lives. Many cosmetic surgeons, for example, use the silhouette of Queen Nefertiti (whose name means "the beautiful one has come") in their advertisements. Ancient Egyptian civilization lasted ...

Greek Mythology: The Ancient Myths and Legends of Greek Mythology (Ancient Greece History Books) by Patrick Auerbach 4.1 Stars (54 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Greek Mythology is the body of myths and teachings that belong to the ancient Greeks, concerning their gods and heroes, the nature of the world, and the origins and significance of their own cult and ritual practices. Prohibition in the United States: A History From Beginning to End by Hourly History 4.3 Stars (429 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Prohibition in the United States * * *Download for FREE on Kindle Unlimited + Free BONUS Inside!* * * Read On Your Computer, MAC, Smartphone, Kindle Reader, iPad, or Tablet. For thirteen years, from 1920 to 1933, the transportation and sale of alcoholic beverages were prohibited in America. This "Noble Experiment" was undertaken because its supporters believed that alcohol was the single major cause of both crime and poverty. They believed that prohibiting alcohol would lead to the end of poverty and slum housing in the United States and that prisons and jails would no longer be needed. However, the precise opposite proved to be true. Prohibition led directly to rising crime rates, widespread illegal behavior amongst ordinary Americans, and a loss of respect for laws, law enforcement, and for the apparatus of government. How could something based on such good intentions go so disastrously wrong? Inside you will read about... Alcohol in Colonial America Prohibition Propaganda The Noble Experiment Life under Prohibition Organized Crime and Corruption Repeal Day And much more! This book tells the story of the temperance movement in America, of its rise over a period of one hundred years to encompass the growing women's movement, and how it eventually attained its goal in 1920. It tells the story of Prohibition itself, of how people exploited loopholes in the law to continue drinking legally, and of how they simply ignored the law and drank illegally. It tells the story of the bootleggers and corrupt officials who made fortunes from Prohibition and the politicians who supported and attacked it. This is the story of a bold experiment undertaken for the very best of reasons which led to the worst of outcomes.

D-Day (World War 1 & World War 2 History Books) by Patrick Auerbach 3.7 Stars (65 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

General Dwight D. Eisenhower said: "You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world. Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened. He will fight savagely. But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The freemen of the world are marching together to Victory! I have full confidence in your courage and devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory! Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking." D Day was one of the biggest invasions that the United States has ever seen. With the help of some deception, the Germans were taken by surprise and forced to scramble and attempt to get the upper hand back. In this book, you are going to go through all the events that happened on D Day and hopefully come face to face with the reality of what truly happened that day. Not only that but also learn what some of the men felt when they were going through the battle. Glorious Revolution: A History from Beginning to End by Hourly History 4.1 Stars (209 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Discover the remarkable history of the Glorious Revolution... Free BONUS Inside! On August 28, 2019, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked Queen Elizabeth II to prorogue Parliament. She approved the request. The elaborate ritual of the queen granting the prime minister permission to do what he intended to do anyway demonstrates how the legacy of the Glorious Revolution of 1688 made the British Parliament, not the monarch, the ultimate source of power in government. But it was not always so. Under the Stuart kings, battles between Parliament and the throne were far from unusual, with no ceremonial rituals to preserve popular fictions regarding who was in power. King Charles I believed ardently in the divine right of kings and went to his execution firmly convinced that he was God's anointed. His second son, James II, believed the same. However, James II was a Catholic, and his succession to the English throne following the death of his brother Charles II set in motion a series of cataclysmic events which culminated in a largely bloodless revolution to bring James's daughter Mary and her husband, William of Orange, to the throne as Protestant sovereigns. Under the eleven-year Interregnum following the execution of King Charles I, Parliament got a taste of power, and ordinary men perceived that God might choose rulers from among their own class. The path to parliamentary supremacy over pedigreed royalty, although ultimately achieved without bloodshed, was strewn with religious intolerance, petty rivalries, titanic clashes of ideology, and a belief in the rights of Parliament to govern without royal interference. The evolution of parliamentary supremacy over royal birthright redefined human social evolution, laying the groundwork for a bold new experiment in government that would make democracy the crowning achievement of the modern age. Ancient Greece: Greek Gods, Spartans, Greek Mythology and The Trojan Horse (Ancient Greece History Books) by Patrick Auerbach 4.0 Stars (24 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

About 2,500 years ago, Greece was one of the most important places in the ancient world. The Greeks were great thinkers, warriors, writers, actors, athletes, artists, architects and politicians. The Greeks called themselves 'Hellenes' and their land was 'Hellas'. The name 'Greeks' was given to the people of Greece later by the Romans. They lived in mainland Greece and the Greek islands, but also in colonies scattered around the Mediterranean Sea. There were Greeks in Italy, Sicily, Turkey, North Africa, and as far west as France. They sailed the sea to trade and find new lands. The Greeks took their ideas with them and they started a way of life that's similar to the one we have today. There was never one country called 'ancient Greece'. Instead, Greece was divided up into small 'city-states', like Athens, Sparta, Corinth and Olympia. Greek Gods The ancient Greeks believed there were a great number of gods and goddesses. These gods had control over many different aspects of life on earth. In many ways they were very human. They could be kind or mean, angry or pleasant, cruel or loving. They fell in love with each other, argued with each other and even stole from each other. The ancient Greeks built great temples and sanctuaries to their gods. They held festivals in their honour, with processions, sports, sacrifices and competitions. Stories of the gods' exploits were told to children by their mothers and to large audiences by professional bards and storytellers. People today still enjoy hearing stories about the Greek gods. Spartans Proud Xerxes, Emperor of Persia and King of Kings, invades Greece with a million soldiers. He commands thousands of ships and is supported by dozens of allies, among them the charming Queen Artemisia. At Thermopylae, a rocky mountain pass in northern Greece, the feared and admired Spartan soldiers stood three hundred strong. Theirs was a suicide mission, to hold the pass against the invading millions of the mighty Persian ...

1982 Lebanon War: A History from Beginning to End (Palestine Israeli Conflict) by Hourly History 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Discover the remarkable history of the 1982 Lebanon War... Free BONUS Inside! The politics and recent history of the Middle East can seem baffling to outsiders. Nowhere was that more evident than during the Lebanon War that raged in 1982. Even contemporary reporting often made fundamental mistakes, and there was little general understanding of what was happening and why. This conflict involved a bewildering number of groups and influences from different parts of the world. The precipitating event was the attempted assassination of the Israeli ambassador in London, carried out by members of a Palestinian terrorist group. In response, Israel's armed forces, the IDF, launched an invasion of Lebanon in which the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) had established its own army. The IDF also found themselves fighting against the armed forces of Syria. Some Lebanese served in the forces directed by Syria, some fought with Palestinian groups, while others aligned themselves with Israel. The outcome was a savage and confusing war that brought misery and suffering to the majority of ordinary people of Lebanon and turned parts of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, into a war-torn wasteland. While the invasion of Lebanon was a military victory for Israel, it notably failed to bring peace or stability to this region. This is the complex and tragic story of the 1982 Lebanon War. Discover a plethora of topics such as • The Palestinian Liberation Organization • The Lebanese Civil War • Operation Peace for Galilee • Operation Mole Cricket 19 • The Siege of Beirut • Aftermath • And much more!
