Famous Political Assassinations Throught History by Ozias Marcovici Price verified 3 hours ago

Assassinations have been a plague on civilizations since ancient times. Human nature has chosen the path of eliminating rivals when peaceful ways of resolving a dispute did not lead to the desired outcome for an individual, clique or an entire system. Dr Ozias Marcovici's new book sheds light on political assassinations throughout history. The book is the result of painstaking research into the two possible outcomes of an attempt on one's life - the successful or sometimes failed ending. Richly illustrated, it reads like a good detective novel. Again, we can declare that the reality of life often exceeds fiction by far.

Legends of Hollywood: The Life of Claudette Colbert by Charles River Editors 3.7 Stars (67 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

*Includes pictures. *Includes Colbert's quotes about her own life and career. *Includes a bibliography for further reading. *Includes a table of contents. "I know what's best for me, after all I have been in the Claudette Colbert business longer than anybody." - Claudette Colbert The 1930s were the height of the classical Hollywood era, known for lavish studio productions by heavyweights like MGM, RKO, Warner Brothers, Paramount, and 20th Century Fox, which were operating at the height of their powers. Every major studio possessed a long roster of contract players, and films were released at such a rapid pace that it made for an especially competitive environment within the industry. Even while America remained in the throes of the Great Depression, the film industry continued to flourish, and movies easily supplanted the theater as the main attraction for American entertainment. Indeed, it would be no exaggeration to claim that the film industry reached its zenith during the decade precisely because it offered an affordable (if very temporary) escape from the anxieties of the economic woes of the era. Despite that competition, Hollywood's biggest star at the box office in 1938 was French actress Claudette Colbert, who had already won an Oscar for Best Actress in It Happened One Night (1934) and used her Broadway experience from the previous decade to become perhaps the industry's most famous screwball comedienne. The fact that Colbert had gotten that far was impressive, given that Hollywood loved to cast foreign actresses in stereotypical roles, and she once noted, "In the very beginning, they wanted to give me French roles... That's why I used to say my name Col-bert just as it is spelled instead of Col-baire. I did not want to be typed as 'that French girl.'" Far from being pigeonholed, Colbert went on to perform in dozens of films, earning several nominations for Academy Awards and acting in both comedic and melodramatic roles effectively. Even as her ...

Bloody Ground: Black Rifles in Korea by John Holway 4.2 Stars (24 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

Korea is "the forgotten war." But to those who fought in it, it was the "unforgettable war." If the names of all those killed were put on a wall, it would be larger than the Vietnam Wall. And Korea lasted only three years, Vietnam about ten. The agony of the winter of 1950-51 is an epic to compare with Valley Forge and the Bulge. Korea was also our last segregated war. This is the story of the black 24th Infantry Regiment, told in the words of the men themselves. Like all black troops since the Civil War, they were reviled by whites and their own commander for "bugging out" - running before the enemy. The charge can still be read in the Army's own official histories. Yet the 24th left more blood on the field than their white comrades - if they did bug out, they must have been running the wrong way. It's a good thing we weren't with Custer," one black GI muttered - "they'd have blamed the whole thing on us." The 24th won the first battle of the war, won its division's first Medal of Honor, and guarded the shortest and most vulnerable road to Pusan. If the port had fallen, the war would have been lost, leaving a red dagger pointed at Japan. It did not fall. That winter, after the Chinese attacked, the entire American army bugged out in perhaps the worst military disaster in American history. "That," said another black veteran, "was when I learned that whites could run as fast as blacks." This is the story of those unsung heroes, who helped turn the Communist tide for the first time. The men bring that forgotten war and their own unsung bravery to life in their own sometimes funny, often heart-breaking, and always exciting words.

Academy Award Winning Sisters: The Lives of Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine by Charles River Editors 3.5 Stars (122 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

*Includes pictures. *Includes both actresses' quotes about each other and their careers. *Includes a bibliography for further reading. *Includes a table of contents. "Famous people feel that they must perpetually be on the crest of the wave, not realising that it is against all the rules of life. You can't be on top all the time, it isn't natural." - Olivia de Havilland "You know, I've had a helluva life. Not just the acting part. I've flown in an international balloon race. I've piloted my own plane. I've ridden to the hounds. I've done a lot of exciting things." - Joan Fontaine Olivia de Havilland is one of the last few living actresses who worked during the Golden Era of Hollywood, but also one of the most decorated, winning dozens of awards over the course of a 50 year career. Among those, she most notably won the Academy Award for Best Actress for To Each His Own (1946) and The Heiress (1949), more than a decade after she got her start as an 18 year old in Hollywood. Ironically, de Havilland was in California in part because the young British girl who had been born in Tokyo stopped in the States for medical treatment. Of course, de Havilland isn't well remembered for any of those accolades or other movies but because she played Melanie Hamilton in Gone With the Wind (1939), perhaps the most famous movie in American history. Although she was a veteran actress at the time, de Havilland's career hadn't progressed much since she started, and rumor has it that she eventually got the role after her own sister, Joan Fontaine, was asked to audition for the part and recommended Olivia instead. Olivia was ultimately nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and became a household name in her adopted country overnight. Having been typecast in light romantic comedies before Gone With the Wind, that performance ensured de Havilland subsequently had a long, productive and versatile career making everything from Westerns and dramas. Of those movies, ...

American Legends: The Life of Rock Hudson by Charles River Editors 3.5 Stars (140 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

*Includes pictures. *Includes Hudson's own quotes about his life and career. *Includes a bibliography for further reading. *Includes a table of contents. "I'm notorious for giving a bad interview. I'm an actor and I can't help but feel I'm boring when I'm on as myself." - Rock Hudson A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. In the middle of the 20th century, there was perhaps no leading man as famous and popular as Rock Hudson, who would star in both comedies and dramas on the way to being named one of the Top 10 Stars of the Year for eight years straight (1957-1964). Whether he was starring in a comedy with Doris Day or in a drama opposite Elizabeth Taylor, the tall, impeccably dressed actor couldn't help but make girls in the audience swoon, and he was recognized as one of Hollywood's biggest heartthrobs. The success of his peak years ensured that Hudson would remain a star over the course of 4 decades, and he appeared in about 70 films during his career. Today, however, Rock Hudson might be better known among contemporary audiences for his personal life. Acting in a more conservative era, Hudson struggled to keep his homosexuality out of the news for fear it would destroy his career, even though many of his Hollywood contemporaries were aware of it. After Hudson died of AIDS in 1985, perhaps the first major celebrity to die of the disease, details of his personal life began to be publicized, sometimes amidst messy legal battles. It soon became clear just what kind of pains Hudson took to keep his personal life private, and his friendships with men were highly scrutinized, as was his marriage to his agent's secretary, ...

The New York City Blackout of 1977: The History of the Power Failure that Led to Looting and Arson Across the Big Apple by Charles River Editors 4.0 Stars (52 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the blackout by NYC residents *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "Perhaps the most significant effects of the blackout were those felt by public and private organizations with responsibility for the economic and social activities of New York City and its inhabitants. In many cases, these organizations were ill-prepared for the blackout and much of the chaos, economic loss and individual inconvenience resulted from this lack of preparedness." - The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's "Impact Assessment of the 1977 New York Blackout Report" Throughout history, light has been associated with goodness and darkness has been a connotation for evil. This is no coincidence, given that many bad deeds that take place in the world under the cover of darkness. It's no surprise civilizations have always valued the ability to keep light present, even when the sun goes down and the world itself becomes dark. Beginning with the first discovery of fire, men and women have struggled with ways to tame it for their use so that they might have a sense of safety at night. Just as a roaring fire lit at the mouth of a cave would keep out four-legged predators, so it was widely believed that electric lights could discourage marauders of the two-legged kind. But what happens when the awesome - and occasionally awful - power of nature snatches light away from those who depend on it to feel safe? This question was answered in a most dismaying way in July 1977 when New York City was plunged into darkness for over 24 hours following a thunderstorm. New Yorkers across the city quickly learned that without the light, they could fall prey to looting and violence of just about every kind imaginable. It did not help that this disaster occurred at a time when the city was under more stress than usual due to a poor economy and frequent reports of a new murder by a serial killer calling ...

Toussaint L'Ouverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines: The History and Legacy of the Haitian Revolution’s Most Famous Leaders by Charles River Editors 4.2 Stars (34 Reviews)    Price verified 36 minutes ago

*Includes pictures *Includes a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "I was born a slave, but nature gave me a soul of a free man... " - Toussaint L'Ouverture The island of Hispaniola is the second largest island in the Antilles chain behind Cuba, and host to the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. Haiti, however, covering the western third of the island, is a French-speaking territory while the Dominican Republic, which occupies the other two thirds, is a Spanish-speaking territory. The Dominican Republic, although classified as a developing nation, has never been struck to the same degree by the malaise of poverty, corruption of its neighbor, languishing in the lower ten percent of nations ahead only of some of the most conspicuous failed states in Africa. Many historians and analysts have posed the question of why, and the answer seems to lie in Haiti's uniquely tortured history. Hispaniola entered the European record in 1492 when Christopher Columbus made landfall on its southern shore during his first trans-Atlantic voyage, and he named his discovery in honor of the Spanish Crown that had funded and sponsored the voyage. Leaving the crew of the wrecked Santa Maria on the island, he returned to Europe, leaving his men to establish the foundations of the settlement of La Navidad and the first beachhead of the European seizure of the Caribbean and the New World. Columbus would revisit the island three times, leading a vanguard of pioneer colonists to commence the exploitation of the New World. The indigenous people of Hispaniola, the Tainos and Arawak, initially greeted the landing with ambivalence, but as more and more of them were enslaved, and as their country was occupied, they entered a period of precipitous decline. Through a combination of disease, the violence associated with enslavement and general assimilation, they had virtually disappeared from the landscape within a century. In the meanwhile, as the ...

The Seven Years’ War: The History and Legacy of the Decisive Global Conflict Between the French and British by Charles River Editors 4.1 Stars (39 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

Some historians have called the Seven Years' War the first true world war, and they make a good point. In Europe, an alliance of Great Britain, the German state of Hanover (the ruling house of Britain was from Hanover) and Prussia fought a series of battles against an alliance of France, Austria and Russia, with the occasional involvement of some other European powers such as Sweden and Spain. The war was also fought in many other parts of the world, including in India, West Africa and the Caribbean, where both the French and the British had colonies. In addition to the fighting on land, battles were fought between ships on the high seas, and these naval battles were generally won by the British, who boasted the 18th century's best navy. Ultimately, this globally coordinated war involved five continents and at least 29 states and tribal confederacies, with a casualty toll in the millions and the maps forever altered. The war's origins stemmed from the rivalry between two sets of European powers that found expression in the War of the Austrian Succession of 1740-1748. In 1740, Charles VI was emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, a dysfunctional aggregation of practically independent states corresponding roughly to what is now Germany. He was of the House of Habsburg, as were preceding emperors, but he had no sons, and the Salic Law then in effect in Germany forbade female succession. Charles did not want to see the Habsburg family lands, which were vast, broken up. These lands included Austria, Bohemia, Silesia, Hungary, the Austrian Netherlands (Belgium), Milan, Mantua, Parma, and Tuscany, making the Habsburgs one of the richest and most powerful families in Europe. By an edict known as the Pragmatic Sanction, Charles abolished the Salic Law in Habsburg lands, allowing his daughter, Maria Theresa, to succeed him. However, the emperor was elected by the nine leading princes of Germany, and he could not secure that title for her (Maria Theresa's husband, Francis of ...

THE BATTLE IS ON: Testimonies/Encounters by Theodulo NKhom 5.0 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

This book is not an autobiography. The book is about several experiences that I had in life. Battles started from childhood. First of all, I was born prematually. I was born in seven months. Some people suggested to throw me away as a neck was almost falling off but mother refused. she went with me to a catholic priest. He called me Theodulo meaning man of God. My life was full of sicknesses from child wood. I had misfortunes from early in life. I started praying while young. I saw an angel while young. I had several problems with witches trying to eliminate me but God was with me. While still young I wondered if there was a power which was above witchcraft. I met several accidents and misfortunes yet as I prayed to God I went through. I went to a catholic seminary where I was often sick. But at a time of examinations I always passed. At the seminary I learnt many things about God. A priest there used to right song books. We used to put papers of songs together and unknowingly I got impartation on books. I read a new testament for the first time and started learning about what Jesus did. That was at the seminary. But before writing a school certificate examination when we were asked to choose whether to go to a major seminary. I chose not to go on. I left the seminary I went to a relative in Blantyre our largest commercial city to look for employment. I started working in 1972 but sicknesses multiplied. I started spending my money on medical expenses. These were battles. My young brother joined me in town. He started working but he was suddenly sick. A relative went to a witchdoctor but the witchdoctor demanded that I should be a guardian. This was against my will but I had nothing to do. Debts were accumulating. Poverty invaded me at a fast rate. A heavenly being and I believe it was Jesus appeared to me. The trip to India coincided with a promotion. In India for the first time I got a lot of money. I bought a number of things with the money. After that I was ...
