Remember Flight 93: A True Story of American Courage by Richard Roy Blake 3.0 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

The story of Flight 93 on 9/11, the story of how a plane that was only a quarter full, thwarted the intention of terrorists to destroy the U.S. Capitol or White House, ought to have been one of the most inspiring, oft repeated, American legends. Sadly this is not the case. Most only know the name of one of the heroic passengers and crew and a single stirring line. Names they most probably do not know include Thomas Burnett, Jr., who in four phone calls to his wife in California realized the hijackers true intentions. They also probably do not know the name of United 93 Jason Dahl, who in his dying act pushed a button which caused the cockpit to broadcast unbeknownst to the terrorists. Or of Jeremy Glick, who in his last phone call clearly knew he was likely to die told his wife he loved her and their new baby, but that the passengers were going to hold a vote to decide whether they were going to try to storm the cockpit. He asked his wife, Lyzbeth, how she thought he ought to vote. Fewer still have probably heard the names of other heroes and heroines such as Cee-Cee Ross Lyles, Mark Bingham, Honor Elizabeth Wainio, Alan Beaven or Mickey Rothenberg. The passengers and crew that survived the initial hijacker takeover placed 35 airphone and two cellphone calls from Flight 93. The actions of the passengers and crew of Flight 93 did more to dissuade 9/11 style hijackings than the billions spent by governments in that same cause. Following the Battle of Britain Winston Churchill praised the brave RAF pilots who saved Britain from Nazi invasion, declaring that "never had so much been owed by so many to so few." That is, until Flight 93.

Living in a Nuclear World: From Fukushima to Hiroshima (History and Philosophy of Technoscience) by Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent (Routledge) Price verified 7 hours ago

The Fukushima disaster invites us to look back and probe how nuclear technology has shaped the world we live in, and how we have come to live with it. Since the first nuclear detonation (Trinity test) and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, all in 1945, nuclear technology has profoundly affected world history and geopolitics, as well as our daily life and natural world. It has always been an instrument for national security, a marker of national sovereignty, a site of technological innovation and a promise of energy abundance. It has also introduced permanent pollution and the age of the Anthropocene. This volume presents a new perspective on nuclear history and politics by focusing on four interconnected themes-violence and survival; control and containment; normalizing through denial and presumptions; memories and futures-and exploring their relationships and consequences. It proposes an original reflection on nuclear technology from a long-term, comparative and transnational perspective. It brings together contributions from researchers from different disciplines (anthropology, history, STS) and countries (US, France, Japan) on a variety of local, national and transnational subjects. Finally, this book offers an important and valuable insight into other global and Anthropocene challenges such as climate change.

Norse Mythology: Gods, Giants, and Giggles by Mya Dewitt 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

Pick up your runes and embark on a fantastical adventure through the nine realms (no horned helmets required, but a hearty appetite for mead and mischief recommended) At first glance, the word "Norse" invokes feelings of adventure, of powerful gods and goddesses, of mystical beings and ruthless Vikings. Your mind takes you to the northern landscapes filled with windy grasslands, clusters of villages, serpentine rivers, horned helmets, and deep, bellowing chants. You imagine axe-wielding warriors, hammer-wielding gods, tricksters, giants, and the undead interlocked in a constant battle of good vs. evil and honor vs. betrayal. All set against the unforgiving, craggy fjords, blanketed in snow. However, there's more to the Norse people, their culture, and their mythology than Hollywood wants you to believe. While the everyday Norsemen and women were far different than Thor, Odin, Freya, or Idunn, these stories of the gods, elves, dwarves, and giants shaped and influenced every strand of life, from nature to families, and even societies, such as... The reasons for rumbling thunder (yes, it's always Thor) to the seasons of change The unwavering values of perseverance, loyalty, and devotion whether one was a dwarf, an elf, or a human The greater impact of worship, sacrifices, and rituals that shaped Norse governance, kingship, and even language All this - and more - is at the core of this book. Cleverly penned to peel away the thin veils of pop culture, this guide to all things Norse mythology brings more than the stories of gods, heroes, and monsters. Inside, you'll discover: The tangled web of myth and reality that shaped the Norse people and their culture (these myths weren't just some bedtime stories!) • A beginner's guide to worshipping like the Vikings - dive into a rich pantheon of gods and goddesses with a speed dial to choose your patron god • Mishaps, mayhems, and a large serving of myths - win the favor of the gods and relive their divine ...

Tanks for the Memories: The 712th Tank Battalion in World War II by Aaron Elson 4.8 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Aaron Elson bought a little Sony Recording Walkman to preserve his father's war stories. His dad passed away two weeks later, and Aaron never got to use it with him. A few years later, he found a newsletter from the 712th Tank Battalion addressed to his dad. He wrote and asked if anybody remembered Lieutenant Elson. He got a letter back inviting him to a reunion. He went, and brought the tape recorder. The rest is history. Oral history. After landing in Normandy three weeks after D-Day, the independent 712th Tank Battalion spent 311 days in combat, many of them on the front lines in support of the 90th "Texas-Oklahoma" Infantry Division. Thanks to its skilled drivers, excellent mechanics, accurate gunners, daring tank commanders and good officers, it became known as the "armored fist" of the 90th Division. These are the people you'll meet in "Tanks for the Memories," in their own words.

Kaleidoscope by Graham Wilson 3.7 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 14 minutes ago

A place of endless bright colours which fuse in my mind into a kaleidoscope. A remembered story of my family's life in a distant world, on aboriginal land in Australia's Northern Territory, a place like remote Canada or Alaska, where few others go. It is the landscape of Crocodile Dundee, myriad hues of billabongs, open grass plains, sunlit hills and purple storms, peopled by its many coloured children. In a changing world a missionary family and aboriginal community became part of modern Australia over 50 years. What is it about the Northern Territory that fascinates? If I mention its name in conversation and people stop to listen. Why, for nearly 200 years, has it drawn people to come, stay longer than they imagined and often, never leave? This our family's story, growing amongst the people, animals and places and colours of this this strange land, within an aboriginal community going through huge changes; citizenship, alcohol, uranium mining, land rights, outstation development, and community self-management. The role of my father in road transport including building a crossing of the East Alligator River, developing outstations for aboriginal communities, learning to fly on missionary wages and establishing an aviation service along with assisting the aboriginal peoples of this land to gain royalties from mining is a story that deserves to be told as a major part of NT history. Along with his tireless work the contribution of many others to the making of the Northern Territory is the fabric of this story. It also tells of my mother and fathers' lives and Christian beliefs which motivated their contribution to this change. It is a story of my memories and love for this remote and beautiful place, in which I lived as a child then worked as an adult and of many NT characters who gave me the memories. It is also the story of me working as an adult across many parts of the NT and about the hardy, outlandish characters that inhabit this place. It also tells ...

Greek Mythology: Doublepack - Greek Mythology & Greek Gods (Ancient Greece History Books) by Patrick Auerbach 4.0 Stars (33 Reviews)    Price verified 44 minutes ago

2 Manuscripts Book 1: Greek Mythology - The Ancient Myths and Legends of Greek Mythology Greek Mythology is the body of myths and teachings that belong to the ancient Greeks, concerning their gods and heroes, the nature of the world, and the origins and significance of their own cult and ritual practices. It was a part of the religion in ancient Greece. The Greeks were polytheistic in their religious beliefs. Polytheistic means they believed in and worshiped many different gods. Modern scholars refer to and study the myths in an attempt to shed light on the religious and political institutions of Ancient Greece and its civilization, and to gain understanding of the nature of myth-making itself. In Greek Mythology, the gods often represented different forms of nature. Their religion/mythology had no formal structure with the exception of various festivals held in honor of the gods. There was no sacred book or code of conduct to live by. The most powerful Greek gods were known as the Olympians. The Greeks believed the Olympians lived on the highest mountain in Greece, Mount Olympus. The Olympian gods included: Zeus, Hera, Apollo, Aphrodite, Ares, Artemis, Athena, Demeter, Hades, Hermes, Hephaestus, Poseidon and Hestia or later she was replaced in some lists by Dionysus. Greek Mythology is explicitly embodied in a large collection of narratives, and implicitly in Greek representational arts, such as vase-paintings and votive gifts. Greek myth attempts to explain the origins of the world, and details the lives and adventures of a wide variety of gods, goddesses, heroes, heroines and mythological creatures. These accounts initially were disseminated in an oral-poetic tradition; today the Greek myths are known primarily from Greek literature. The oldest known Greek literary sources, Homer's epic poems Iliad and Odyssey, focus on the Trojan War and its aftermath. Book 2: Greek Gods - The Gods and Goddesses of Greek Mythology The ancient Greeks believed there ...

Egyptian Mythology: Egyptian Gods & Ancient Egypt (Ancient Egypt History Books) by Patrick Auerbach 4.1 Stars (23 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

2 Manuscripts Book 1: Egyptian Gods - The Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt Worshiped for over three-fifths of recorded history, ancient Egypt's Gods and Goddesses are among the most fascinating of human civilization. The lives of pharaohs and commoners alike were dominated by the need to honor, worship, and pacify the huge pantheon of deities. From lavish tomb paintings and imposing temple reliefs to humble household shrines, countless tributes throughout Egypt reflect the richness and complexity of their mythology. This book examines the Egyptian gods and goddesses - from minor household figures such as Bes and Taweret to the all-powerful deities Amun and Rethat made Egypt the most completely theocratic society of the ancient world, and made Egyptians, according to Herodotus, "more religious than any other people." Ancient Egypt has held humanity in its thrall for over 5000 years. The image of the Great Pyramids of the Valley of the Kings rising ghostlike from the white sands of the Sahara Desert is synonymous with the mysteries of the Ancient World. Ancient Egypt was remarkably advanced, especially considering its origins date back 30 centuries before the Common Era. From clocks to the 12-month calendar to agriculture and fashion, we continue to experience the echoes of Ancient Egypt in the world we live in today. Book 2: Ancient Egypt - A Guide to the Gods, Pharaohs, Dynasties, and Traditions of Ancient Egypt Ancient Egypt's impact on later cultures was immense. You could say that Egypt provided the building blocks for Greek and Roman culture, and, through them, influenced all of the Western tradition. Today, Egyptian imagery, concepts, and perspectives are found everywhere; you will find them in architectural forms, on money, and in our day to day lives. Many cosmetic surgeons, for example, use the silhouette of Queen Nefertiti (whose name means "the beautiful one has come") in their advertisements. Ancient Egyptian civilization lasted ...

Prohibition in the United States * * *Download for FREE on Kindle Unlimited + Free BONUS Inside!* * * Read On Your Computer, MAC, Smartphone, Kindle Reader, iPad, or Tablet. For thirteen years, from 1920 to 1933, the transportation and sale of alcoholic beverages were prohibited in America. This "Noble Experiment" was undertaken because its supporters believed that alcohol was the single major cause of both crime and poverty. They believed that prohibiting alcohol would lead to the end of poverty and slum housing in the United States and that prisons and jails would no longer be needed. However, the precise opposite proved to be true. Prohibition led directly to rising crime rates, widespread illegal behavior amongst ordinary Americans, and a loss of respect for laws, law enforcement, and for the apparatus of government. How could something based on such good intentions go so disastrously wrong? Inside you will read about... Alcohol in Colonial America Prohibition Propaganda The Noble Experiment Life under Prohibition Organized Crime and Corruption Repeal Day And much more! This book tells the story of the temperance movement in America, of its rise over a period of one hundred years to encompass the growing women's movement, and how it eventually attained its goal in 1920. It tells the story of Prohibition itself, of how people exploited loopholes in the law to continue drinking legally, and of how they simply ignored the law and drank illegally. It tells the story of the bootleggers and corrupt officials who made fortunes from Prohibition and the politicians who supported and attacked it. This is the story of a bold experiment undertaken for the very best of reasons which led to the worst of outcomes.

D-Day (World War 1 & World War 2 History Books) by Patrick Auerbach 3.7 Stars (65 Reviews)    Price verified 44 minutes ago

General Dwight D. Eisenhower said: "You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world. Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened. He will fight savagely. But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The freemen of the world are marching together to Victory! I have full confidence in your courage and devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory! Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking." D Day was one of the biggest invasions that the United States has ever seen. With the help of some deception, the Germans were taken by surprise and forced to scramble and attempt to get the upper hand back. In this book, you are going to go through all the events that happened on D Day and hopefully come face to face with the reality of what truly happened that day. Not only that but also learn what some of the men felt when they were going through the battle. Glorious Revolution: A History from Beginning to End by Hourly History 4.1 Stars (209 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Discover the remarkable history of the Glorious Revolution... Free BONUS Inside! On August 28, 2019, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked Queen Elizabeth II to prorogue Parliament. She approved the request. The elaborate ritual of the queen granting the prime minister permission to do what he intended to do anyway demonstrates how the legacy of the Glorious Revolution of 1688 made the British Parliament, not the monarch, the ultimate source of power in government. But it was not always so. Under the Stuart kings, battles between Parliament and the throne were far from unusual, with no ceremonial rituals to preserve popular fictions regarding who was in power. King Charles I believed ardently in the divine right of kings and went to his execution firmly convinced that he was God's anointed. His second son, James II, believed the same. However, James II was a Catholic, and his succession to the English throne following the death of his brother Charles II set in motion a series of cataclysmic events which culminated in a largely bloodless revolution to bring James's daughter Mary and her husband, William of Orange, to the throne as Protestant sovereigns. Under the eleven-year Interregnum following the execution of King Charles I, Parliament got a taste of power, and ordinary men perceived that God might choose rulers from among their own class. The path to parliamentary supremacy over pedigreed royalty, although ultimately achieved without bloodshed, was strewn with religious intolerance, petty rivalries, titanic clashes of ideology, and a belief in the rights of Parliament to govern without royal interference. The evolution of parliamentary supremacy over royal birthright redefined human social evolution, laying the groundwork for a bold new experiment in government that would make democracy the crowning achievement of the modern age. About 2,500 years ago, Greece was one of the most important places in the ancient world. The Greeks were great thinkers, warriors, writers, actors, athletes, artists, architects and politicians. The Greeks called themselves 'Hellenes' and their land was 'Hellas'. The name 'Greeks' was given to the people of Greece later by the Romans. They lived in mainland Greece and the Greek islands, but also in colonies scattered around the Mediterranean Sea. There were Greeks in Italy, Sicily, Turkey, North Africa, and as far west as France. They sailed the sea to trade and find new lands. The Greeks took their ideas with them and they started a way of life that's similar to the one we have today. There was never one country called 'ancient Greece'. Instead, Greece was divided up into small 'city-states', like Athens, Sparta, Corinth and Olympia. Greek Gods The ancient Greeks believed there were a great number of gods and goddesses. These gods had control over many different aspects of life on earth. In many ways they were very human. They could be kind or mean, angry or pleasant, cruel or loving. They fell in love with each other, argued with each other and even stole from each other. The ancient Greeks built great temples and sanctuaries to their gods. They held festivals in their honour, with processions, sports, sacrifices and competitions. Stories of the gods' exploits were told to children by their mothers and to large audiences by professional bards and storytellers. People today still enjoy hearing stories about the Greek gods. Spartans Proud Xerxes, Emperor of Persia and King of Kings, invades Greece with a million soldiers. He commands thousands of ships and is supported by dozens of allies, among them the charming Queen Artemisia. At Thermopylae, a rocky mountain pass in northern Greece, the feared and admired Spartan soldiers stood three hundred strong. Theirs was a suicide mission, to hold the pass against the invading millions of the mighty Persian ...

1982 Lebanon War: A History from Beginning to End (Palestine Israeli Conflict) by Hourly History 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 14 minutes ago

Discover the remarkable history of the 1982 Lebanon War... Free BONUS Inside! The politics and recent history of the Middle East can seem baffling to outsiders. Nowhere was that more evident than during the Lebanon War that raged in 1982. Even contemporary reporting often made fundamental mistakes, and there was little general understanding of what was happening and why. This conflict involved a bewildering number of groups and influences from different parts of the world. The precipitating event was the attempted assassination of the Israeli ambassador in London, carried out by members of a Palestinian terrorist group. In response, Israel's armed forces, the IDF, launched an invasion of Lebanon in which the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) had established its own army. The IDF also found themselves fighting against the armed forces of Syria. Some Lebanese served in the forces directed by Syria, some fought with Palestinian groups, while others aligned themselves with Israel. The outcome was a savage and confusing war that brought misery and suffering to the majority of ordinary people of Lebanon and turned parts of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, into a war-torn wasteland. While the invasion of Lebanon was a military victory for Israel, it notably failed to bring peace or stability to this region. This is the complex and tragic story of the 1982 Lebanon War. Discover a plethora of topics such as • The Palestinian Liberation Organization • The Lebanese Civil War • Operation Peace for Galilee • Operation Mole Cricket 19 • The Siege of Beirut • Aftermath • And much more! Skull and Bones: The History and Mystery of Yale University’s Notorious Secret Society by Charles River Editors Price verified 4 hours ago

Conspiracy theories, and particularly the belief that elements of the world are secretly controlled by individuals or groups, have been around for as long as people have lived in groups. Perhaps that's inevitable - after all, those who are excluded from power are very likely to be inclined to see their position not as an outcome of their own choices or situation but because of the secret machinations of shadowy groups. This type of conspiracy theory isn't new. As far back as the final years of the Roman Republic, some Romans became convinced that powerful people were secretly conspiring to subvert the power of Rome's elected assemblies and planning to take control. It can be argued that this is the earliest documented conspiracy theory, but in that case, it was actually true. From the Catiline Conspiracy to the First Triumvirate, it is now clear that men like Julius Caesar, Pompey, Marcus, Crassus, and Catiline were in fact attempting to subvert the Republican system, and their attempts would lead to internal unrest and civil war. Ultimately, Caesar would indeed bring about the end of the Republic and the establishment of Imperial Rome, ruled by one man: the emperor. That's part of the problem with trying to look objectively at any conspiracy theory. Secret conspiracies and secret societies do exist, and throughout history, some were often specifically intended to acquire power and wealth. Meanwhile, virtually universal access to the Internet in the 21st century has led to the widespread dissemination of strange theories that would previously have been known by only a handful of people. When members of a secret society are some of the wealthiest and most powerful people in the world, it's easy to see why rumors persist about the group, and among such secret societies, few have engendered interest quit like Skull and Bones, an undergraduate senior society at Yale University. Its members have included American presidents and the CEOs of some of the largest ...

The Roman Civil Wars of the 3rd and 4th Centuries: The History of the Conflicts that Led to a Split of the Roman Empire by Charles River Editors 3.8 Stars (9 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

The 50 years following the assassination of Severus Alexander on March 19, 235 CE has been generally regarded by academics as one of the lowest points in the history of the Roman Empire. This stands in stark contrast to the previous 150 years, which included the reigns of the Five Good Emperors and has been universally praised as one of the high points of the empire. Severus Alexander was the last of the Severan emperors, and the subsequent years of crisis (235-285 CE) were characterized by a series of short reigns, usually ending in the violent death of the reigning emperor. At the same time, this period of time also saw the empire beset by threatening forces on all sides. The Romans faced a newly resurgent Persia in the east, as well as significant forces from German tribes on the Rhine and Goths along the Danube. The various conflicts would result in the unprecedented death of a sitting emperor in battle, which took place in 251 with Emperor Decius, and Emperor Valerian was captured in 260 CE. Diocletian's reign would see reforms put into place to achieve the desired end of the Imperial Crisis, and several of the emperors before him may well have had the ability to manage the reform process, but the army's power and willingness to use and abuse power ensured that few of them truly had a chance to really make their marks. It was the worst period in the history of the Roman Empire to that point, even as it forced the Romans to deal with belligerent foreign powers and problems created by the emergence of increasingly powerful and populous provinces. As Roman leaders vied with each other for power and constantly fought civil wars, Rome's famous roads fall into disrepair, the economy was crippled, the continent-wide trade system that had flourished in the previous years was replaced with a basic barter system, and there was a reduction in international trade. People became ever more fearful for their personal safety, and the Imperial Crisis saw an increasing trend ...

Discover the remarkable life of Virginia Woolf... Free BONUS Inside! Virginia Woolf ranks among the most influential writers of the twentieth century. Embracing the Post-Impressionist times in which she lived, her novels reflect the artistic shift from romanticism to abstract. Plot mattered very little to Woolf. Her writing was a stream of consciousness outside of time and place. Her novels, including her best-known work, Mrs. Dalloway, invariably dwell on gender roles and the concept of reality. Woolf suffered from mental illness throughout her life. Her inner torment formed the basis of much of her writing. Virginia made multiple suicide attempts and was institutionalized several times throughout her life as she feared a loss of control due to her increasing depression and manic episodes. Her husband, Leonard Woolf, with whom she had mainly a platonic relationship, remained supportive of her until her death. An Exploratory Anthology: There has long been a deep desire felt by scholars, both past and present, to recover the silent secrets of the ancient cultures of Tibet and Nepal, to trace the background of their prehistoric spiritual development as derived from ever earlier cultures, and then to discover whatever modern manifestations might still exist in the remote margins of that mysterious world. This desire has exerted a powerful pull on the imaginations of Westerners -- historians, philologists, Tibetologists, philosophers, and psi researchers alike. Composed from the journals and field notes of explorer M.G. Hawking's five years in remote areas of the Himalayas, this book transports the reader into regions of our planet that in all history only a handful of people have experienced, a journey that leads to the discovery of the most refined and powerful mystical knowledge possessed by the human race. If truly understood through patient study, fully integrated into your core belief system, and practiced with unwavering diligence, this knowledge can wholly transform your experience of this world in every positive way imaginable. The Taj Mahal: The History of India’s Most Famous Monument by Charles River Editors 3.6 Stars (31 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

*Includes pictures. *Explains the Taj Mahal's construction history and cultural influences. *Includes footnotes and a bibliography for further reading. *Includes a table of contents. "Should guilty seek asylum here, Like one pardoned, he becomes free from sin. Should a sinner make his way to this mansion, All his past sins are to be washed away. The sight of this mansion creates sorrowing sighs; And the sun and the moon shed tears from their eyes. In this world this edifice has been made; To display thereby the creator's glory." - Emperor Shah Jahan's description of the Taj Mahal "The Taj Mahal rises above the banks of the river like a solitary tear suspended on the cheek of time." - Rabindranath Tagore, Bengali Nobel Laureate Poet "Rahul had wondered how someone could love their beloved so much that their dedication to them became one of the wonders of the world." - Faraaz Kazi, modern novelist Taj Mahal is Arabic for "crown of palaces", and the name could not be more fitting for one of the most instantly recognizable buildings in the world. Constructed over a span of about 20 years in the mid-17th century as a mausoleum for the wife of Emperor Shah Jahan, the Taj Mahal is aptly described by UNESCO, which designated it a World Heritage site, as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage". Indeed, the Taj Mahal is truly a global icon because it masterfully fused the artistic and architectural elements of several cultures, including Indian, Ottoman, Persian, and Islamic cultures across the region. While the marble dome is the first feature that pops out about the Taj Mahal, the careful layout of the entire structure is also incredibly impressive, and it took thousands of laborers several years to work on the other features, from the gardens to the calligraphy inscribed on the exterior. The Taj Mahal also includes other buildings, including a mosque and other tombs and mausoleums for people close ...

When a terrible force : War in the Pacific 1937 to 1951 (Modern History Book 2) by Blake Hamilton 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 2 hours ago

For my kids If you only learn two things from this book, please let it be the following. Firstly, extreme identity politics is a cancer that poisons your soul. Never let an ideology, race, gender, trend or religion consume your entire identity; otherwise, you will have no room left in your heart for the other. You are a complicated, loving and sometimes messed-up human being. Therefore, you must accept that empathy is the only thing dividing you from a stranger. Secondly, there is nothing wrong with defending yourself, but remember that there is always time to return to the negotiating table. The longer a conflict, the more it escalates, and the higher the cost of peace rises.

Liverpool to Kirkby Fields: A glimpse at life in a 1950-60s overspill town. by Kate Higgins 3.7 Stars (36 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

A tale of a personal account of a childhood spent in Kirkby, the first of the Liverpool overspill towns to develop - the story takes me back over 35 years to when my dad was employed during the second world war as a civil servant at the Royal Ordnance factory. With a population of around 3,000 made up mainly of farming people, the pretty little town was just a few years later to be developed into the new town with population figures reaching 50,000 at its peak. As I walk through Kirkby Park estate, 35 years since I left Kirkby, I recall the people, the events, Liverpool's working life and social life, and the humour which together made me and my seven brothers and sisters who we are today. I note the changes we lived through, the days when our telephone was the one in the red box on the corner of the road; our first television set; to today's technological world; scenes through the years of family life, school days where the remnants of Victoriana ran parallel with Beatlemania in the "Swinging Sixties", and of how mum and dad, quite amazingly, managed to take all ten of us on holiday each year.I recall local ghost stories told to me over the years and although my lifelong interest in the supernatural never produced any ghosts, I do relate what happened the moment I was told my mum had died, fifteen years after dad had also died, which led me to believe that he was there for her that day. We were inspired by mum and dad, with their legacy of love, selflessness, work ethics and honesty, and last but never to be forgotten, the ability to see the funny side.

Saints & Scoundrels: Colorful Characters of Arizona (Wild West History) by Julie McDonald 4.1 Stars (43 Reviews)    Price verified 44 minutes ago

I love my home state of Arizona! My family has been here for over 100 years. With some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet, it is indeed a land of color and contrast. Equally colorful are the many characters who have called Arizona home. John Shaw was killed in 1905 in a gun fight after robbing cowboys who were gambling in a saloon. He was buried where he fell and was dug up the next day by the same cowboys he robbed; to be given one last drink of whiskey. Arizona's lovable outlaw, Climax Jim, who escaped numerous prison cells. Dollie Wiley had a revolving door of husbands and her constant companions--diamonds and rat poison. Hi Jolly and his herd of camels in Western Arizona. The amazing Navajo Code Talkers and their role in World War II. The honeymoon disappearance of Glen and Bessie Hyde, and many more. Good men and bad women, bad men and good women. I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as I enjoyed writing them. Here's to FUN history!

Siren's Song: The Allure of War by Antonio M. Salinas 4.3 Stars (33 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

"First you will come to the Sirens who enchant all who come near them. If anyone unwarily draws in too close and hears the singing of the Sirens, his wife and children will never welcome him home again, for they sit in a green field and warble him to death with the sweetness of their song. "There is a great heap of dead men's bones lying all around, with the flesh still rotting off them. Therefore pass these Sirens by, and stop your men's ears with wax that none of them may hear." (Odyssey. Book 12, 188-191). Everyone dreams. However, some of us dream about a nightmare that is a timeless character in civilization: war. The Siren's Song of war has a hold upon much of mankind, in that some of us are drawn to it like nothing else. Some of us fantasize about this experience called war. We read books, watch movies, and play video games about combat. Some wonder if they'd be brave enough to face the enemy and stare death in its face. Others wonder what the sound of a bullet flying overhead makes or how it feels to lay eyes upon the enemy for the first time. Do you wonder what war is like? This is a story of one man who was captivated by the Siren's call to war. The Sirens of war awaited him in the Pesh River Valley of Kunar Province, Afghanistan. There in Kunar, he finally learned the truth about war. If you are curious about this nightmare, or perhaps lived through it yourself, you are welcome to share in this journey. You will walk amongst the training grounds and experience war. These are one man's reflections of combat, taken from his war journal and originally written within hours of firefights, while his ears were still ringing from the cacophony of battle that all warriors intimately know. You are invited to this Afghanistan, a place where savage beauty and death coexist in every moment and with every breath.

When the Airlines Went to War by Robert J. Serling 4.4 Stars (222 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

The Dramatic, untold Story of America's Civilian Air Warriors In the East, Japan had invaded China. In the West, Europe was being overrun by Hitler's war machine. And in the U.S., America's commercial airlines were stepping into a vital role that would make the difference between victory and defeat... From Robert J. Serling, one of America's most honored aviation authors, comes a dramatic chronicle of the glory days of the propellor plane, when the young, ambitious domestic airlines -- led by shrewd, independent-minded businessmen -- met up with military olive drab. It is the story of airline pioneers and pilots, mechanics and engineers, who overnight learned the art of night and transoceanic flying, moving cargo that included troops, ammunition and medicine, and were kept running by ingenious mechanics who borrowed from visiting planes. A must-read book for aviation fans and World War II history buffs, When the Airlines Went to War takes you inside the hulls of the transport planes, through harrowing, secret missions from Newfoundland to India and Guadalcanal, and into the top-level meetings between the airline owners and Roosevelt's White House that led to the development of the ATC (Air Transport Command) and the NATS (Naval Air Transport Service). A story of courageous pilots and remarkable flying feats, this is also a history of how a fledgling industry developed into a crucial military operation, and how it came out of the war not only victorious, but ready to change the shape and pace of air travel forever. Robert J. Serling has written about flying in fiction (The President's Plane Is Missing, Air Force One Is Haunted) and nonfiction; this is his seventh book on aviation. He and his wife live in Tucson, Arizona.
