Behind the Forgotten Front: A WWII Novel by Barbara Hawkins 4.1 Stars (195 Reviews)    Price verified 19 minutes ago

75 years after WWII headlines of Pearl Harbor, Normandy and Hiroshima hit the press, the China-Burma-India Theater was brought to light in Behind the Forgotten Front. It's 1942, and Harry Flynn leaves behind the love of his life to journey into East Asia, a world of tigers, elephants, and the Himalayan Mountains. He enlists to fight, expecting to find the thrill of danger and honor of military service. Instead, Harry is ordered to the Forgotten Front in the Indian subcontinent as an ordinary supply officer. There, General Joseph 'Vinegar Joe' Stilwell is constructing a 'road to nowhere' through Japanese-occupied Burma -- and he's willing to complete it at any cost. In an exotic world with Naga headhunters, opium-smoking Kachin tribesmen, and marauders who scorn both life and death, Harry must entrust his life to others if he is to survive the war. During a time when boys are forced to come of age on the battlefield, and where death and insanity seem to be the only ways out, Harry must find what makes his life worth living. The lessons learned in WWII apply to all wars where men walk away carrying unspeakable memories about the lives that could have been. Behind the Forgotten Front takes you to the overlooked battles in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II and shows you that history is about facts driven by the passions and sometimes the mistakes of real people.

The Diamond Rush: 10th Anniversary Edition by Jon Lymon 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 26 minutes ago

***NEW EDITION FEATURES BRAND NEW OPENING CHAPTER AND COVER ART*** Simon Remnant's not your average hero. Oh no. As far as heroes go, he's way below average. Absent father, absent-minded lover, unskilled and untrustworthy. None of them do his uselessness justice. So there are no expectations other than failure when he joins the mid-21st Century's equivalent of The Gold Rush - a race to get-rich-quick through plundering the dazzling fortunes offered by an asteroid brimming with diamond deposits. Remnant provides the brawn in a dubiously talented and totally incompatible crew of three aboard a ship that's not expected to make it higher than the treetops. Can he overcome his underdog status? And can he beat the mighty NASA to the asteroid belt and return home with a life-changing cut of the loot? Lymon's debut novel is an outlandish adventure that mashes the thriller and sci-fi genres into a pulp of highly entertaining, uniquely-told far, far, fetched fiction that'll leave you believing that even way below average heroes deserve to have their story told. PRAISE FOR THE DIAMOND RUSH: "A well crafted tale of the underdog." "OK, here's the thing that's amazing about this book. There are several instances of what? That's not possible. But the book is so good, you don't care." "Kudos, and good job."

The Second Sun: Volumes I & II by Kristof Morrow 4.5 Stars (30 Reviews)    Price verified 11 minutes ago

The plot of The Second Sun is an allegory for the financial inequality between the older and younger generations. There's an island paradise where there's elders living a second life after retiring from their human forms, and live amongst their chosen few, who also live for thousands of years in relative peace. However, only those welcome can actually approach the island and survive. Everyone else on earth is made to endure a game of thrones type world, except I omitted much of the overt cruelty you find in that series. I also forgo the notions of racism and sexism. l wanted to adopt the spirit of Tolkien, but expand that virtue of "anyone, no matter how small, can achieve great things," to every kind of human so it feels to be an adventure for everyone! I was diagnosed with Tourette's when I was 27, and so it's developed my understanding of the theft of agency and being marginalized for something I cannot control. It's also structured similarly to game of thrones, in that the first three chapters are different parts of the world with different characters, and you learn how they are related as the story progresses. The Second Sun is, above all things, an adventure made animate by hundreds of distinct characters across half a world, written to confess through prose and tale our tendencies poisoned by Dickensian bleakness, and to wholly ameliorate that cynicism by the light and courage of those who live and labor for a just peace.

The Year of Eric's Hat by Peter Sykes 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 11 minutes ago

Meet Eric. Eric is a teenager. He has a disability and struggles with walking and speaking. But Eric has a very special gift. And a hat. Unbeknownst to his schoolmates and even to his family, Eric is both savant and sage. But Eric is better known for his crutches, awkward speech and his battered green top hat. His premature wisdom and burgeoning writing talent finally get showcased in his increasingly popular but anonymously-written column in the school gazette. Eric's simple musings on secular ethics and how to be happy are aimed at his fellow adolescents who, like Eric, are struggling with the universal challenges of impending adulthood and caught in the grips of a drug-fuelled gang war and a rapidly-escalating arms race. Try as he may, hat or no hat, Eric's journalistic efforts will not be enough to arrest the build-up of animosity nor halt another tragic school shooting. Only the untimely and violent deaths of two students will have the power to reunite a fractured academy and its supporting communities. Only then will Eric's enlightened suggestions be truly heeded: and his hat properly appreciated. A gripping and highly accessible work of contemporary inspirational fiction, 'The Year of Eric's Hat' combines a page-turning narrative with some age-old and practical guidance - on how we can all meet head-on the myriad of adult human problems without losing touch with our more childlike, better and happier selves. 'The Year of Eric's Hat' combines seamlessly the suspense of Lionel Shriver's 'We Need to Talk About Kevin' with the accessibility and wisdom of 'The Art of Happiness,' by HH The Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler. Peter Sykes has so far written and published three novels (Flying Babies, Sunday with the Devil, and The Happiness of Pyot). 'The Year of Eric's Hat' is Pete's fourth work of literary fiction. Pete was brought up in Africa and the Caribbean, lives in Spain and currently works, part-time and across the globe, as a Humanitarian Consultant. Pete ...

Left on Paradise by Kirk Adams 4.2 Stars (20 Reviews)    Price verified 11 minutes ago

Before Portland, there was Paradise. Following the stolen presidential election of 2000, 102 intrepid progressives, led by self-absorbed Hollywood star Ryan Godson and his kind-hearted wife Kit Fairchild, make good on their threat to abandon a corrupted society still under the spell of Puritan fanatics, Yankee traders, and southern slavers. Now, a new society will be founded: a new country among the nations. This will be a land in which feminists, liberals, environmentalists, multiculturalists, pacifists, socialists, communists, communitarians, and progressives of every persuasion will remain unthwarted by the opposition and oppression of Republicans, social conservatives, and constitutionalists. Left on Paradise is a sweeping epic about a band of idealists who have forsaken family and friend to build a perfect word on a remote island in the south Pacific. From the thrill of first hope to the brink of deadly catastrophe, Kirk Adams relentlessly puts the band of idealists in a world in which they can live out the iron logic of their beliefs and dreams -- unencumbered by conservative resistance or religious restraint. Yet, they bring to Paradise the moral limits of their own ideals and character and soon find that they themselves have brought evil to their Eden. With riveting twists and turns in the plot that mirror contemporary (and historical) American political experience, the author shares political fiction that speaks to the cultural questions and divisions that contemporary Americans face, even as he offers a vision of what must not be sought. It's May 2001 and the band of political pilgrims have sailed to a remote island in the Pacific to found a new country: a true State of Paradise. Numbering the same as the settlers of Plymouth and Jamestown, the idealists have marched straight out of the 1960s to build the Great Society suspended by Nixon, Reagan, and the Bush family. These pilgrims will show the world what it means to be Left on Paradise -- or so they ...

The Trouble with Girls by Kirk Adams (Kirk Adams Books) 3.9 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 11 minutes ago

Eric Eules is in trouble -- always. The sixth-grade graduate has a big problem -- and it isn't just that Woodland Hills neighborhood guru Burnout pushes him down a hippie path he can't possibly travel. Eric's problem is that he's at war with nearly every woman in his life at the very moment he has grown to desire nothing more than the love of one girl. That is, his mother assigns him never-ending chores, his aunt taunts him as a male chauvinist piglet, and his sisters protest his frequent tinkling on the toilet seat. Most of all, he must face down classmate and nemesis Skinnydip -- who stands between Eric and the new girl to the neighborhood, the beautiful Lori Bloom. The Trouble with Girls in an exciting coming of age story in which a growing boy first perceives how the true desire of his heart is something -- someone -- greater than playing baseball and riding bikes with his boyhood friends. Set in an Indiana suburb during the summer of 1972 -- a year of tumult and change in how men and women saw each other -- the clumsy and awkward twelve-year-old boy must navigate the perils of his own home and neighborhood. Maddened by first love, he must complete a series of Herculean labors to win the heart of she who now matters most to him. Return to a lazy Midwest summer when noisy boys played in ball fields and wooded lots, bicycled across town without supervision, and checked out books from the county bookmobile. Remember a quieter world without mobile phones and video games, a world where boys learned how to get along without the nagging oversight of their parents as they fought through problems themselves -- learning life-changing lessons even in their foolish and short-sighted solutions to thorny and complex concerns. See how boys scrounged for spending cash in old-fashioned families quick to provide love and discipline to their children, but slower yet to indulge mere boys anything more than food, clothing, and shelter. Still, The Trouble with Girls is far more ...

Jones And The Watchers Way: Jones T. Harver And The Watchers Way by Philip Darmstaedter 4.2 Stars (30 Reviews)    Price verified 11 minutes ago

Many people have heard of stories dealing with drug induced issues. Few could predict that a non-drug induced psychosis story would be in their grasp. In Jones and The Watchers Way - The first book of this life story series - Jones is a character based on my personal experiences, thoughts and feelings over four years with a spot of science fiction and self-help written into it. Our main hero Jones has landed in the psych ward. The mumbling watchers are outside, stuck in their own minds, still mostly homeless looking for a way to become free. They want to help. Well, most of them. As jones slowly learns how to speak with them across another plane, he discovers Nepharius. Jones' new realities mixed with lack of sleep and impending doom in a parallel universe loom ever closer as Jones desperately searches for a solution. What's real and what's not is a toss up. Jones was just another twenty-something searching to improve the world's future by communicating his sometimes crazy ideas into new consciousness. Meanwhile, he is simultaneously battling with realities of mundane life itself; his hobbies of music, money, a job, and late nights out partying. Jones's mind slips, stutters, and splits forward into a manic-filled journey. Undeterred, Jones plows ahead to further his personal development of his crazy ideas in whatever reality is working for him at the time, helping the Watchers and besting Nepharius. Deciphering reality is of course, sometimes tricky. But no worries. Jones wrote it all in his journal.

Dive into the mesmerizing world of ancient tales, where gods walk among mortals, heroes embark on epic quests, and the very fabric of reality is shaped by divine forces. Crafted for those craving deeper narratives than traditional children's versions, this book bridges the gap between simplistic retellings and academic texts. While the subtitle hints at its appeal to adults, rest assured it's equally suitable for teenagers, with no excessively mature or violent themes. Explore the book's structure as it navigates the genealogy of the gods in Part 1, akin to a world-building compendium, before delving into narrative-driven myths in Part 2, primarily drawn from Ovid's "Metamorphoses." The language is tailored for contemporary readers, complemented by extensive annotations for clarity. Additionally, the gods' names are elegantly transformed from Roman to Greek style for consistency. As we delve into the rich tapestry of Greek and Roman mythology, may it inspire, enlighten, and deepen our understanding of the human experience.

Asareer's belief solidifies, and divine anecdotes about Krishna continue to enthral him. While the chasm between the viewpoints of both friends keeps widening, Krishna attains a God-like stature and comes to be feared by his opponents and revered by his devotees and sages alike. Keepsakes of Grief: Poetry Noir 2004 - 2011 by Stephen Donald Huff Price verified 3 hours ago

I heard the call, the tone of it teasing, a broadcast chorus of incessant singing amid devilish choirs of insidious patter, the dry rasping of scales and portentous matter to cast shadows of sounds among us that must listen, beyond maddened distraction, inaudible vision. For I heard the call, the lies of it pleasing, then I followed it blindly where it would lead me. Beyond death and disaster through ranges of never, I learned listening is ruin and blindness is error. I cursed blackness of bruises, I despised the tender of capital expenditures and I as the lender. I heard the call, and I hated its message, for pipedream pursuits earn the wickedest of blessings, and the laziest among us are perhaps the smartest. The happiest of our number is the unhappy artist; they too quickly learned how nothing is of matter - not the singers, not the choir, not the subject of the patter. Often, the most popular modern poetry demonstrates a determined morbidity, and many of our most beloved poets perished by their own hands. Doing so, they left behind countless keepsakes of grief, but I will not label their passage as 'tragic'. I believe a martyr's suffering demands happy witness. Otherwise, why hang upon a cross?

The Sapphire Sea: A Matt Ransom Mystery by Bobby Underwood 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 11 hours ago

With its sexy mix of thrilling action and tangible sensuality, and a willingness to tackle subjects such as abuse and incest, suicide and faith within an entertaining sci-fi/mystery series often focused on global conspiracies in a world devoid of real love, The Sapphire Sea might just be the finest and most entertaining entry yet in the Matt Ransom canon. Big and sprawling -- there are over thirty pivotal and recurring characters -- yet almost uncomfortably intimate at times, the world of Matt Ransom is both intoxicating and addictive. By the seventh entry the world of Matt Ransom had moved from a dystopian Earth to one nearly fully recovered. In the previous entry, A Matt Ransom Christmas, readers were treated to intrigue as well as an ode to that most cherished of holidays. A startling story-line began to emerge that promised to rock this world to its foundations. That promise is fulfilled in The Sapphire Sea, a morally and sensually complex tearing down of everything readers thought they understood about this world. The Sapphire Sea remains true to all the intricate story-lines which preceded it, not to mention those all-important relationships, yet takes this most unique series in new and fresh directions. A Matt Ransom entry with one poignant moment after another, more achingly sensual encounters than can be counted, and a thrilling revenge and conspiracy story which moves like lightning despite being interwoven with the moral quandary Matt finds himself facing. The Sapphire Sea is the most ambitious Matt Ransom entry to date, which is saying a great deal. Stunning and heartbreaking, this one is so shocking, readers will find themselves asking: "Did that just happen?" A lot does happens here that could not have been anticipated by readers, including some deeply moving departures of beloved characters. A tearful yet uplifting ending make this one of the most memorable entries in the entire Matt Ransom canon.

Ocean City HQ by Peter Glassman 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 11 minutes ago

"Congress approved the new mission for the SEALs. It was based on the evidence you and others have sent from Iraqi and Afghanistan interrogations that terrorists are here from overseas battlefields." Navy Captain Paul Spada and Congress thus set Islamic extremists in the US as military targets. It was the persistence of Navy SEALS like CDR Wilson Dakin that brought this about. The Navy SEALs become the combat arm of the CIA, DEA, and FBI, under the command of Captain Spada and CDR Wilson Dakin. Their mission is to eliminate all Islamic extremists who have infiltrated this country before they start killing American citizens. Dakin's Headquarters is in Ocean City, Maryland.Their actions begin in Boston's MIT, followed by a major confrontation in Las Vegas. The major US battle is yet to come and it's in Scottsdale, Arizona. A merge of al Qaeda, Taliban and ISIS assemble a pilgrimage of non-extreme Muslim worshipers to meet in Scottsdale. They are to face MECCA and show Americans they are indeed peaceable people. The jihadist plan is to kill all 100,000 thousand of them, to evoke terror, and polarize the world as pro-and-anti-Islam. It is a set up for war just like WWII with its fascists and anti-fascists-a new Axis and Ally confrontation which can result in WWIII.

The Truth Between Us (Bentwood Book 2) by Tammy L. Gray 4.6 Stars (444 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Nine years to win her. Three years to love her. And one decision that destroyed it all. April Duncan was raised with three clear truths: the family name is absolute, ambition and success rule over every emotion, and love always comes with strings attached. Image was everything in her carefully crafted world... until the mirror cracked. Sean Taylor was April's best friend, the one man who taught her it was okay to let her guard down and to rely on someone. She trusted him. She loved him. Which made his deception the darkest kind of cruelty. Now, nearly a year later, she's ready to leave her failed engagement in the past and get back her life and her estranged family, even if it means dating a man solely for his connections. She'll never again choose love over loyalty. Sean has spent his entire life breaking barriers, facing challenges, and never giving up. Until one impossible choice destroyed his future and left him no option but to flee from the woman who annihilated his heart. Now he's back in Bentwood and determined to make her hear the truth and rebuild the trust he shattered. But April has become a mere shell of the woman who claimed his heart long ago. Winning her back is more than just seizing a victory, because if he fails... the girl he's loved for a lifetime will disappear forever. The Truth Between Us is the second book in the Bentwood series. Each book can be read as a standalone, but it is recommended that you begin with book one to get the full experience among this tight group of family and friends.

HEIMAT by Paul Marzell 4.2 Stars (16 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

In 1929, four young German friends embark on a life-altering journey from the remnants of post-WWI Germany to the promise-filled streets of America. Dreaming of returning to their beloved hometown of Neisse as triumphant American citizens, their fate takes a dramatic twist in the heart of Berlin's teeming train station. A daring rescue of an American diplomat binds them in an enduring friendship, setting them on a path through the shattered illusions of the American dream, the harrowing depths of the Great Depression, and the challenging process of assimilating into a new culture. As the world plunges into the chaos of World War II, their lives diverge in ways they could never have imagined. Matthias finds himself in the paradoxical role of building ships in an American yard, aimed at the destruction of their homeland. Feliks, driven by a sense of duty, joins the US Army to fight against the Japanese in the Pacific, later aiding the Polish resistance in their homeland. Josef, caught in an ill-timed visit to Neisse, is swept into the ranks of the Wehrmacht, partaking in the invasions of France and Russia, and eventually coming face-to-face with Americans in the Battle of the Bulge. Meanwhile, Edo steps into the hallowed halls of the Nuremberg trials, contributing to the monumental task of bringing Nazi war criminals to justice. Their story is a tapestry of loyalty, betrayal, and the relentless grip of fate, weaving a compelling saga of friendship tested by war, ideology, and the quest for identity in a world coming undone. This is more than a tale of four immigrants; it is a poignant exploration of the human spirit caught in the tumult of history.
