However, in this desolate land an unexpected ally crosses his path. Will he succeed before the hourglass runs empty? In the windswept wilds of the Black Hills resides Lila Malone, a spirited newspaper reporter bound by society's restrictive expectations. 1984 (Essential Orwell Classics) by George Orwell (Cedro Classics) 4.6 Stars (529 Reviews)    Price verified 25 minutes ago

The lexicon of 1984, which includes terms like Newspeak, Doublethink, Big Brother, and the Thought Police, has entered the English language as a representation of the horrors of dictatorship. Not least due to its logical consistency, George Orwell's account of Winston Smith's struggle against the all-pervasive Party has become a classic. It was first published in 1949, yet its importance hasn't diminished.

The Knights of the Cross by Henryk Sienkiewicz (E-BOOKARAMA) 4.2 Stars (19 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

"The Knights of the Cross" (or "The Teutonic Knights"; Krzy?acy in Polish) is a 1900 historical novel, an epic of medieval times and national destiny, ranked as one of the highest achievements from the pen of Henryk Sienkiewicz, the Literature Nobel Prize winner in 1905. "The Knights of the Cross" follows the adventures of Macko, a resourceful and wise veteran of war, and his young nephew, Zbyszko, the symbol of a maturing nation, as they struggle, along with the unified peoples of Poland and Lithuania, against the oppressive religious military Order (Knights of the Cross/Teutonic Knights). In a tavern inn Zbyszko falls in love with the lovely Danusia, who is traveling with the court of the Duchess Anna. He swears to her his knight's oath and promises to bring her 'three trophies' from the Teutonic Knights. Regarded as the most outstanding and prolific Polish writer of the second half of the nineteenth century, Henryk Sienkiewicz is perhaps best known for his epic historical novel "Quo Vadis", which depicts early Christianity and the persecutions. Sienkiewicz was known for his gigantic scenes, bright contrasts and the epic sweep of his works. He was a master in creating mass-action scenes and battles.

Rome has fallen, and in the empire's wake, Europe is fractured, ruled by barbarian tribes and petty kings. One such kingdom has never had a name. Nestled in a beautiful valley in the Iberian Peninsula, the Unnamed Kingdom is a harsh place. Slaves labour under threat of the whip, and all are at the mercy of the cruel king's whims. Eubulus, the Master of the Army, has long dreamed of more. Of true freedom, of a kingdom without kings. While serving the throne, he has sought revolution, though it has cost him dearly. Now, his daughter is due to die at the king's command. There is no more time to waste. The kingdom must fall. Telling the tale of the rise and fall of a post-Roman kingdom through the eyes of kings and slaves, The Unnamed Kingdom is a sweeping epic of romance, revolution and tragedy.

Faking The Game (Paradise Bay Billionaire Brothers Book 1) by Claudia Burgoa 4.3 Stars (733 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

From USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR Claudia Burgoa comes this page-turner fake-relationship-office romance. What happens when the guy who's afraid of love finds himself in it? Know what they say about never mixing business with pleasure? Yeah, no. The one about never sleeping with your boss? I ignored it too. I blame Aslan Spearman, the boss. He's a wealthy playboy who doesn't believe in happily ever after. He's demanding, a workaholic, and cynical. He'd rather have a root canal than be in a romantic relationship. Do you want to know a secret? I think he's afraid of love. So when he has to go to the Spearman family reunion in Hawaii with his girlfriend, he's in big trouble. That's what happens when you lie to your family about your relationship status. It wasn't important -- until now. What does he do? He comes to me, his VP of Operations and right hand for assistance. After all, I'm a problem solver. Except my personal life is complete chaos. So we make a deal. I'll be his girlfriend if he helps me solve my problems. It's a win-win situation, right? I mean, how hard can it be? It's not like I plan to fall in love.

Women in Love (Grapevine Press) by D H Lawrence (Grapevine India) 3.8 Stars (1,295 Review)    Price verified 4 hours ago

D. H. Lawrence declared in Women in Love, his masterpiece that presaged the erotic consciousness of the 20th century, "Let us hesitate no longer to state that the sensual passions and mysteries are equally sacred with the spiritual mysteries and passions." Gudrun and Ursula Brangwen, two sisters, serve as the main characters' eyes as Lawrence examines love, sex, passion, and marriage. The two very different sisters pursue passionate, scorching adventures with their lovers, Rupert and Gerald, while looking for more mature emotional relationships. They are intelligent, perceptive, and observant. Gudrun and Ursula's temperamental differences generate an ongoing discussion about their culture, their inner lives, and the riddles between men and women against a horrific World War I backdrop of coal mines, industries, and a devastated working class.

La doublure (French Edition) by Raymond Roussel (Bibebook) 4.4 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

Jack Slater: Orphan Train to Cattle Baron by Johnny Gunn (Wolfpack Publishing) 4.5 Stars (1,343 Review)    Price verified 8 hours ago

In the fall of 1872, following a buggy mishap that killed his parents, Jack Slater, ten years old, was flung to the streets of New York City, among thousands of misplaced, orphaned, or runaway children. He was saved by the Children's Aid Society that placed orphaned children with families on the frontier. These families welcomed the children and most found loving homes. Some grew up to become industrial, political, or community leaders. Slater did not find a loving home. Instead, he found himself at Pete Jablonski's farm in Fargo, Dakota Territory where abuse was a daily dose of reality. When outlaws rob a local mine payroll and kill four men in the process, Slater makes a mortal enemy of the Elko County Sheriff that takes Slater's life is an unexpected direction.

La vue (French Edition) by Raymond Roussel (Bibebook) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 9 hours ago

Le bacille (French Edition) by Arnould Galopin (Bibebook) 4.0 Stars (96 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

With Fire And Sword. Book I: The Uprising (Eastern Kingdom Series 1) by Henryk Sienkiewicz (apebook) 4.4 Stars (141 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

The main character of the book, the young nobleman Jan Skrzetuski, or Pan Jan for short, is caught in the middle of the beginning Cossack uprising under the legendary Bogdan Chmelnitzky. Along the way he also falls in love with the beautiful princess Helena, who is also desired by a Cossack officer. In the course of the book the conflict begins to take serious forms, Pan Jan meets most of the main characters on his travels and missions through Eastern Europe. Personal rivalries, chases on horseback, duels, drinking bouts, epic dialogues and great battles (which no normal European has ever heard of before) are also part of the book. As a reader, you live the tragic story of the kingdom, which in the end is destroyed by internal conflicts. This civil war, by the way, caused several million deaths - when reading the book it becomes clear why. Maybe it is necessary to warn potential readers that 17th century warfare in this region was extremely brutal and unless you can tolerate occasional descriptions of horrifying activities, perhaps you should not choose this novel. In the course of prosecuting this revolution or attempting to put it down local villages and Manor homes will be torched. There will be stories of widespread use of violence including the use of stakes, fire and torture to murder populations. Both sides will overindulge in the spilling of innocent blood. But if you can stand that you will be benefitted with excellent characterizations, an exceptionally tense and well-plotted love story intertwined with the basic plot. "The Uprising" is the first book of the epic trilogy WITH FIRE AND SWORD by Nobel Prize winner Henryk Sienkiewicz. It deals with the uprising of the Cossacks against the Poles in 1648. It is a world forgotten in Central Europe, which was ruled by a kingdom in personal union (Poland-Lithuania). The size of this first part of the first trilogy of The EASTERN KINGDOM Series is about 300 pages.

Marry Me For Money Book 1 by Ali Parker (BrixBaxter Publishing) 4.2 Stars (299 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

I need a wife. Now. It doesn't have to do with love and living the good life. This is all about getting the money my billionaire father left to me. And I'm running out of time. But who proposes to a stranger after the first date? Me. That's who. As if I have another choice. Luck is on my side though, and a beautiful model shows up in my office. Single? Gorgeous? Funny? All of the above. Our first date goes so well that I feel unsure about my decision to do this thing with her -- you know, fake it. I put it off and decide to do it later, to ask for her help after we get to know each other better. But I like her more and more each time we meet, and eventually, offering her a ring isn't for my dad's money -- it's because I want her more than anything else in the world. Besides, who's going to know if it's fake or real? And does it really matter? Yeah. It does. To her... This is book 1 of a trilogy. There is a cliffhanger at the end. You will have to buy book 2 and 3 to finish the story.

The eNotated Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll 4.4 Stars (38 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

Though most ebooks are simple conversions of paper books, "The eNotated Alice in Wonderland" is a completely new approach that takes advantage of ebook technology by providing comprehensive eNotations (electronic annotations), essays, and background information conveniently accessible through links and a active table of contents. Written by Pam Sowers, researcher, journalist, and long-time "Alice" fan, this background biographical, historical, and interpretive information reveals an "Alice" not visible to most readers. Says Sowers, "This book is for adults as well as children. 'Alice in Wonderland' is not simply a sweet children's story set in dreamland. It is much more complex. Themes include death, racism, politics, anger, confusion, logic and women's roles. Carroll wrote in a world controlled by Victorian sensibilities." One hundred fifty years ago, Charles Dodgson, joined a party boating from Oxford to Godstow that included three little girls, Alice Liddell and her sisters. In charge of entertainment, Dodgson told the girls a story that with Alice's encouragement became "Alice in Wonderland," published three years later under the pen name Lewis Carroll. Immediately popular and published in hundreds of variously illustrated editions reaching millions of readers over generations, "Alice" has over time become less accessible than it was to Carroll's Victorian contemporaries. Sowers's eNotations supply the tacit background Alice knew but we don't, revealing the humor, insight, and fun of this many-layered complex book. This eNotated Classics sesquicentennial edition of "Alice" contains more than 90 illustrations, most in color, from the most beloved editions of Alice as well as more than 360 eNotations, an introduction, two fascinating essays, an extensive bibliography, and a chronology showing where Carroll and "Alice" fit in their times. If you read Alice as a child, you'll be amazed on reading the eNotated edition how much you missed and can now ...

The Holy War (Updated, Illustrated): Made by Shaddai upon Diabolus for the Regaining of the Metropolis of the World (Bunyan Updated Classics Book 2) by John Bunyan (Aneko Press) 4.7 Stars (716 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

More than 100 Original Illustrations Bonus Content: The Life of John Bunyan, by William Brock For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the lords of this age, rulers of this darkness, against spiritual wickedness in the heavens. (Ephesians 6:12) What if you were able to see your life from a spiritual perspective and see the actual reality of the verse above? How does our enemy, Diabolus, plan and carry out his attacks? How do his demons help, and what are their objectives? Why and how must we petition Emmanuel to get His attention and help in this great, holy war? Written four years after The Pilgrim's Progress, John Bunyan followed up with this second allegorical classic, which has touched hearts and minds of readers for generations. The epicenter of this book is the town of Mansoul, its people (such as Conscience, Self-Denial, and Do-Right), and its gates (Eye-gate, Ear-gate, Mouth-gate, Nose-gate, and Feel-gate). The attack by Diabolus and his demons, all of whom have appropriate names, is carefully planned and executed. As still happens to men today, Mansoul fell hard. Emmanuel is of course willing to help, but can only do so on special, seemingly strict terms. As you watch this intense battle unfold, you'll be emboldened to fight with new vigilance, to guard the gates with tenacity, and to rely on Emmanuel's sovereignty like never before. It should be noted that John Bunyan focused not so much on biblical sequence or even perfect accuracy in every aspect. Instead, he honed in specifically on the spiritual battle being waged for each individual soul, filling in other details as needed to create the scenes. In this edition, we updated the text to clarify the meaning of each scene and inserted Bible verses in key areas to bring to light the depth and spiritual meaning of this powerful allegory. About the Author John Bunyan was born in November 1628, in Elstow, England. A celebrated English minister and ...
