The Annals of Petronius Jablonski: An Odyssey of Historic Proportions and Priceless Treasure of Philosophy by Petronius Jablonski (Chandelier Press) 3.3 Stars (16 Reviews)    Price verified 12 hours ago

When his classic Pontiac is abducted by a deity who lives in the depths of Lake Michigan, Petronius Jablonski is offered Enlightenment in compensation. To obtain it he must decipher the coded features of an odyssey. He neglects to share these minor details with his longsuffering girlfriend, Sandy, who accompanies him. Home-schooled by an eccentric father, Petronius holds the modern world in contempt, the demise of polytheism and eighteenth century English in general, the plague of democracy and "internets" in particular. Despairing of his ability to understand the journey and rarely paying attention, he engages the Reader's assistance. His propensity for digressions complicates the search for a solution while making a mockery of first person narration. He anticipates absurd questions and adds chapters in response, he accuses the Reader of being smitten with Sandy and makes her less attractive, and he revolutionizes Philosophy by superseding Occam's overrated Razor and Plato's much-ballyhooed Cave with the paradigm-shattering contributions of Petronius' Shovel, Petronius' Blender, Schadenfreude Before-the-Fact, Petronius' Garage, and Petronius' Wheelbarrow. As he subjects the Reader to increasingly demanding prerequisites it becomes clear he is wandering the remorseless hinterland between genius and madness, which raises questions about the accuracy of his chronicle. Sandy's terrified warning that he's behaving like his tragic father elicits rage: "What Cato did, and Addison approved, cannot be wrong." But is Petronius a victim of ancestral fate or wisdom? What if Truth is poison? Perhaps a 1969 Bonneville is more precious than "enlightenment."

Truths - The Andersen Saga: A Novella about Family, the Challenges of Single Fatherhood, and the Hope of Second Chances (The Andersens Book 9) by Jacie Middlemann 4.3 Stars (54 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

Truths is the ninth novella in the ongoing Andersen Family Saga. Livia Andersen was a woman who held her family together with a quiet smile and an iron will. It's only been months since her death and the four children she leaves behind continue to grapple with the shifting changes in their lives now that she's gone. But they are not alone in their grief. And secrets she kept carefully guarded for years have been revealed. Now it is not just her children who must come to accept that not everything in life will remain as it once was. Noah Andersen is still trying to come to terms with the recent revelations of all that had taken place twenty years ago and kept from him for all those years by his mother. Now he needs to share that information with his four children. While he might have some concerns about how they'll take the news he's even more concerned when he learns that their mother has suddenly taken an uncharacteristic interest in them. Since Marjorie rarely did anything without an agenda he meant to find out what that was and which of the kids she was targeting. Noah also knows that he needs help. He's already enlisted his brother to keep an eye on how the kids react to what's about to be shared with them. He also turns to a couple of the younger generation of the Andersen family for their insight and to help with his kids as their lives once again are forever changed. The Andersen Saga is a story of family. It is a story about joy and loss, hope and sorrow, betrayal and regrets, unconditional forgiveness, high expectations, and unwavering loyalty. It reminds that at the heart of who we are is the family we come from, the family who stands behind and beside us and at times against us. And who we become isn't just a result of those still with us but those too that we've lost along the way. It is about the twist and turns every family deals with, the conflicts from within, and the never ending desire for acceptance and respect. Truths is the ninth book in ...

Two unlikely companions meet in midair: 13-year-old Jeremy, sent against his will by his career-absorbed father to spend the summer with his bipolar mother, and Harry, one-legged and afflicted with mid-stage Alzheimer's, who escapes the confinement of home for what may be his last adventure. Their journey begins, trailed by Harry's wife and Jeremy's parents, who threaten to cut it short. It's a race against time and circumstance. "In Adrian Magnuson's Taking Flight a curmudgeon losing his memory and a snarky teen fleeing his parents find a common passion in bird watching. Endearing characters, delightful story and a poignant final scene give this book wings along with the beautifully depicted birds." -- Frances Wood, author of Brushed by Feathers: A Year of Birdwatching in the West "Taking Flight is an evocative and moving contemporary novel. It is, at every level, a story about love. For one character it is a coming of age tale, for the other the end of an age. Both are runaways, yet each ultimately is searching for home. I highly recommend this heart-touching, beautifully written book." -- Andrea Hurst, president of Andrea Hurst Literary Management "Filled with well-developed, real-life characters, Taking Flight's heart-breaking but satisfying story hits on all cylinders: action, comedy, and emotion." -- Terry Persun, award winning author of Sweet Song
