Louie and Katherine must not only defend themselves and their resources from outsiders but fight against their own darker natures before Louie's strange gift fades away. SOLDIERS AND MARINES: A Novel of War (The Soldier's Wars Book 1) by Martin Archer 4.2 Stars (631 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

This is a very good read. It is the first novel in an action-packed multi-book military saga that follows the life of a combat soldier from his early years in the Korean War to his middle age in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere in Israel and the middle east in wars that are in the immediate future. It is fast paced and action-oriented as casualties and a willingness to sign up for additional front line tours and new wars result in Roberts shouldering responsibilities far beyond his years. Fans of WEB Griffin, Larry Bond, Tom Clancy, and Harold Coyle will enjoy this great addition to military fiction. Peace and Conflict is the second book in "The Soldiers and Marines" series. It follows Chris Roberts as he serves a peacetime hitch in Europe broken by several assignments to Vietnam - first with the fabled Second Parachute Regiment of the Foreign Legion as it goes down at Dien Bien Phu and then as an observer of the military's effort to defeat the Viet Cong. The third novel "War Breaks Out" describes the role and decisions of Roberts and his men when the Marines, reserves, and National Guard troops rush to Europe to reinforce NATO and participate in the intense war of air and armor that might have occurred if Russia's paranoid leaders had decided to invade Germany and fight NATO instead of giving up power and freeing their satellite nations. The fourth and fifth novels of the saga are set in the near future and describe the decisions and intense combat that may be about to happen: "War in the East" describes what happens when the US sides with Russia when China invades Russia to retake its traditional lands in the Russian east. The fifth, "The Israel's Next War," describes the intense combat and agonizing decisions that occur when the rise of militant Islam and the threat of nuclear war results in a coalition of Islamic Countries launching a surprise attack on Israel that permanently changes the boundaries and nations of the Middle East. The first ...

The Kraken Gate: The rise of a steampunk action hero by Philip Dickinson (Independent Publishing Network) 4.2 Stars (15 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Connie Derringer's day hasn't begun well. She's just blown up her place of employment and killed dozens of people, including two of her own team. Director Harman isn't having the best of days either. The project he's sunk millions of sovereigns into has just been blown sky-high, and now Chancellor Gordon, Head of the Republican Council is on his case. Chancellor Gordon doesn't need new problems. If the vaporisation of a city block wasn't bad enough, the uneasy truce between Emberland and their warlike neighbours has broken down. Against a backdrop of an escalating war against an enemy with air superiority, Connie Derringer must protect her client's invention against Nallian spies and saboteurs. Everyone wants a piece of the Koulomb Gate, but perhaps they'd be less keen if they knew about the alien creatures lurking on the far side of the portal. Great for steampunk fans and anyone who loved the series 'Tales of the Ketty Jay' by Chris Wooding including 'Retribution Falls', 'The Black Lung Captain' etc. Will be enjoyed by fans of Jules Verne's 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea' or 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'.

The Warden Threat: A Sci-Fi Counter-Fantasy Novel (Defying Fate Book 1) by D.L. Morrese (Fuzzy Android) 4.1 Stars (82 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Prince Donald, the idealistic third son of the king of Westgrove, believes he may be the only one capable of protecting his country from an invasion spearheaded by an ancient, massive, and magical stone warrior known as the Warden of Mystic Defiance. When he recovers a mysterious scroll he believes may allow him to take control of the Warden, he eagerly takes on the task. Donald, unfortunately, is woefully unprepared. His only understanding of such things comes from reading fictional tales of epic adventures and brave heroes. He dreams of being one, but to his dismay, his quest unfolds nothing like he imagined. The books in his library seriously understate the complexities and hardships involved, and the real world can be much more confusing and complicated than those in stories. Sometimes it is not easy to identify the villains, and what things seem may not always be what they are. The real threat to the kingdom may not even be what everyone seems to think it is. Most disturbing of all is the realization that the hero is not necessarily predestined to save the day. Heroes can fail. This lighthearted parody is unique -- a soft science fiction counter-fantasy, which pokes a fair amount of good-natured fun at the serious tone and dependence on magic common to many epic fantasy adventure genre novels. With its charming and truly likeable characters, witty, intelligent humor, and prose style blending positive science fiction and epic fantasy elements, The Warden Threat is a delight, perfect for readers of these genres yearning for something fresh and different. This book is also available in the omnibus edition Defying Fate, which includes both The Warden Threat and its sequel, The Warden War. Defying Fate is a Kindle exclusive.

The first and greatest adventure of Tarzan and the inspiration for a new feature film starring Alexander Skarsgård, Margot Robbie, and Samuel L. Jackson. Born to English aristocrats marooned in the dense West African wilderness, John Clayton, only heir to the Greystoke estate, is orphaned soon after his first birthday. Adopted by the she-ape Kala, he is given the name Tarzan, or White-Skin, and grows up among the apes, swinging from tree to tree and fighting the great beasts of the jungle. He has no memory of civilization, but discovers, in the books his parents left behind, the key to his strange appearance, and to his past. When a party of white explorers arrives, Tarzan finds himself drawn to them -- in particular, to the American Jane Porter. The star of twenty-four books written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, as well as countless film, television, and comic book adaptations, Tarzan forever remains the Lord of the Jungle. The question remains - should they prevail, will Flurry and Honja make it back to their own time? Interview with the Author Q: So, what makes the Flurry the Bear series special? A: My goal was to create a vast, epic world filled with various cultures for my readers to explore. There's so much more to my stories than what someone will get from one read through. I've developed many nations, tribes, cultures, cities, and languages to name only a few. Flurry's world has a rich history and a deep backstory to be discovered. I also have wanted to create my books to be appealing to children ages 7 - 14, but also be something adults would love to read for themselves. There's a lot there to be enjoyed by all ages. Lastly, I set out to create something that is full of action and adventure while still being family friendly. My stories teach various lessons that Flurry learns from each adventure. Q: What order should I read the books in? A: I've written my book series so that you can read the first four in any order. However, book five onward, I assume that the reader knows who everyone is and what had come before it. If you would like to see what my books are like, I frequently suggest that someone read The Book of Snow which is the fourth book in my series. It fills you in on what's come before. Then, you can always go back and ...

The Guardians of the Forest: Book One by Kelly Napoli 3.6 Stars (23 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

Kiethara is a descendant from a long line of powerful guardians who have been charged to protect a magical forest since the dawn of time. She prematurely took the place of her mother -- the previous guardian -- after she was defeated by a man known as Gandador; now, young Kiethara is forced into a position of power and danger. The Spirit of Aaron, the forest's first guardian, awakens to train her legendary powers, all the while hiding unknown truths and secrets of her past. When Gandador returns to destroy the reign of the guardians and rule the forest himself, he brings into the forest a whole new world, and Kiethara must keep in check her overwhelming emotions and experiences in order to control her magic and save the forest. Wickedly dark yet extremely moving, The Guardians of the Forest explores the burdens of responsibility and the prospects of failure. Kiethara must protect the world's source of power while developing her own, but guarding it becomes difficult when she finds herself kidnapped and taken out of the forest she is bound to protect. This Young Adult novel draws true-to-form parallels with a normal fifteen-year-olds life. Readers experience how Kiethara bears the weight of an entire world on her shoulders in a humorously sarcastic tone, relying on the friends she makes and the love she discovers to ease the fear of failure to deliver what she has been born to accomplish.
