SOLDIERS AND MARINES: A Novel of War (The Soldier's Wars Book 1) by Martin Archer 4.2 Stars (631 Reviews)    Price verified 14 minutes ago

This is a very good read. It is the first novel in an action-packed multi-book military saga that follows the life of a combat soldier from his early years in the Korean War to his middle age in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere in Israel and the middle east in wars that are in the immediate future. It is fast paced and action-oriented as casualties and a willingness to sign up for additional front line tours and new wars result in Roberts shouldering responsibilities far beyond his years. Fans of WEB Griffin, Larry Bond, Tom Clancy, and Harold Coyle will enjoy this great addition to military fiction. Peace and Conflict is the second book in "The Soldiers and Marines" series. It follows Chris Roberts as he serves a peacetime hitch in Europe broken by several assignments to Vietnam - first with the fabled Second Parachute Regiment of the Foreign Legion as it goes down at Dien Bien Phu and then as an observer of the military's effort to defeat the Viet Cong. The third novel "War Breaks Out" describes the role and decisions of Roberts and his men when the Marines, reserves, and National Guard troops rush to Europe to reinforce NATO and participate in the intense war of air and armor that might have occurred if Russia's paranoid leaders had decided to invade Germany and fight NATO instead of giving up power and freeing their satellite nations. The fourth and fifth novels of the saga are set in the near future and describe the decisions and intense combat that may be about to happen: "War in the East" describes what happens when the US sides with Russia when China invades Russia to retake its traditional lands in the Russian east. The fifth, "The Israel's Next War," describes the intense combat and agonizing decisions that occur when the rise of militant Islam and the threat of nuclear war results in a coalition of Islamic Countries launching a surprise attack on Israel that permanently changes the boundaries and nations of the Middle East. The first ...

Beast: Weird War Tales #1 by William R Rohn 3.8 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Not Suitable For All Audiences Going out looking for a lost patrol really didn't seem like such a good idea. The squad was tired and made up of the survivors of other units. But command was command. Dumb orders are what sergeants are paid to do. But there was something definitely strange about an empty village. At least one that hadn't been bombed into rubble. This one seemed untouched. When the villagers come out of hiding, they just aren't right. Something is hunting them to eat...

The Knights of the Cross by Henryk Sienkiewicz (E-BOOKARAMA) 4.2 Stars (19 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

"The Knights of the Cross" (or "The Teutonic Knights"; Krzy?acy in Polish) is a 1900 historical novel, an epic of medieval times and national destiny, ranked as one of the highest achievements from the pen of Henryk Sienkiewicz, the Literature Nobel Prize winner in 1905. "The Knights of the Cross" follows the adventures of Macko, a resourceful and wise veteran of war, and his young nephew, Zbyszko, the symbol of a maturing nation, as they struggle, along with the unified peoples of Poland and Lithuania, against the oppressive religious military Order (Knights of the Cross/Teutonic Knights). In a tavern inn Zbyszko falls in love with the lovely Danusia, who is traveling with the court of the Duchess Anna. He swears to her his knight's oath and promises to bring her 'three trophies' from the Teutonic Knights. Regarded as the most outstanding and prolific Polish writer of the second half of the nineteenth century, Henryk Sienkiewicz is perhaps best known for his epic historical novel "Quo Vadis", which depicts early Christianity and the persecutions. Sienkiewicz was known for his gigantic scenes, bright contrasts and the epic sweep of his works. He was a master in creating mass-action scenes and battles.

An ancient evil has awoken in the jungles of Vietnam and it's out for blood... The year is 1969. Yancy Lazarus -- bluesman, gambler, future world-class mage and fix-it man -- is just a dumb, unlucky kid serving with the 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines in Vietnam. With just a few weeks left to go until Yancy gets shipped back to the States, he's just trying to keep his head down and avoid a body bag -- no mean feat in Nam. But when his squad is tasked with conducting a routine patrol deep in enemy territory, everything goes to nine kinds of hell, and he quickly sees his chances at survival slipping away. When the radio operators start to pick up some funky, dirty ol' blues all the way out in the backcountry, it's a nice change of pace. At least until the men in Yancy's squad start losing their minds, turning on each other with murderous intent as the music works its deadly power within them. Convinced it's some kind of new psychological warfare initiative, the squad leader forces the men to push deeper and deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, obsessed with locating the music's source. What they find, however, isn't some new technology, but an ancient spirit awoken by the terrible war. Even worse, the music is changing Yancy too, awakening something buried inside of him. Only one thing is certain, nothing is ever going to be the same. See how it all began... "Hunter's writing is as low-down, gritty, and insidious as the blues Yancy Lazarus loves. Just like the mysterious music drifting through the jungle toward Yancy's squad, Siren Song will get under your skin and sink its hooks into your mind." -- eden Hudson, Bestselling Author of the Jubal Van Zandt Series, Path of the Thunderbird, and the Broken Bard Chronicles Author's Note: Siren Song is a novella-length story (26,000 words) and is not a full novel. DUTY: An Epic Novel of West Point and the Civil War (Duty, Honor, Country Book 1) by Bob Mayer (Cool Gus) 4.2 Stars (312 Reviews)    Price verified 14 minutes ago

An epic series in the vein of HBO's Rome, following two ordinary men through extraordinary times; from West Point, through the Mexican War, and into the Civil War. Elijah Cord and Lucius Rumble swore oaths, both personal and professional. They were fighting for country, for a way of life and for family. They and their West Point classmates carried more than rifles and sabers into battle. They had friendships, memories, children and wives. They had innocence lost, promises broken and glory found. Duty, Honor, Country is history told epic and personal so we can understand what happened, but more importantly feel the heart-wrenching clash of duty, honor, country and loyalty. And realize that sometimes, the people who changed history, weren't recorded by it. The story starts in 1840, in Benny Havens tavern, just outside post limits of the United States Military Academy. William Tecumseh Sherman, Cord, and Benny Havens' daughter come together in a crucible of honor and loyalty. On post, in the West Point stables, Ulysses S. Grant and Rumble are preparing to saddle the Hell-Beast, a horse with which Grant would eventually set an academy record. On this day, all make fateful decisions that will change the course of their lives and history. We follow these men forward to the eve of the Mexican War, tracing their steps at West Point and ranging to a plantation at Natchez on the Mississippi, meeting Major Robert E. Lee at Arlington, and go to Charleston, SC. We travel aboard the USS Somers and the US Navy mutiny that led to the founding of the Naval Academy at Annapolis. We end with Grant and Rumble in New Orleans, preparing to sail to Mexico and war, and Cord with Kit Carson and Fremont at Pilot Peak in Utah during his great expedition west. This is book 1 in the Duty, Honor, Country series. (Formerly titled West Point to Mexico) "Will leave you spellbound. Mayer's long suit is detail, giving the reader an in-depth view of the inner workings of the Army ...

Could a German Count be the answer to the outfit's problems... or is his agenda more dangerous than anyone can imagine? Welcome Home: A Story of the Vietnam War by Piers Platt 3.7 Stars (702 Reviews)    Price verified 24 minutes ago

Jack Frost's father fought in WWII. His brother fought in Korea. So when Jack's own draft card arrives, there's no doubt in their minds that he'll do his duty, and fight in Vietnam. Jack loves his family, but he also knows that killing another human being is something he can never do. Welcome Home is the short story of one man's struggle to maintain his innocence amid the brutality of the Vietnam War, torn between his family's expectations, his loyalty to his brothers-in-arms, and his own moral code. Interview with the Author Q - What makes Welcome Home special? A - As a former Army officer and student of military history, I know that the guys who got drafted for Vietnam got a really raw deal. Aside from being sent to fight a war they didn't volunteer for, when they returned home, they were shunned by the American public. I wanted to write a short story set during the Vietnam War that asked: what if there was a soldier who felt obligated to serve his country, but felt he couldn't kill another human being? How would he deal with that personal conflict? Q - Why should readers give this book a try? A - It's a short, fast read, and will appeal to all fans of military fiction, historical fiction, and literary stories about army veterans and the challenging situations we can and do experience. Q - Have you written other books? A - Yup! If you're into stories about the military, you should definitely check out Combat and Other Shenanigans, the NY Times-bestselling memoir of my year in Iraq as a tank and scout platoon leader. Joining a group of American soldiers, led by Corporal Dane Shaw, refugees from the recent battle, they make their way across the desert to the city of Sfax, where Drew is to meet with the mysterious 'Monsieur Gascoigne'. They stumble across a small group of Arabs and Germans guarding a halftrack filled with treasure looted from murdered Jews and rescue their prisoner, the beautiful Frenchwoman Angelique DuBois. While driving to Sfax, Dane shares his Christian faith with his companions while trying to avoid a group of Arab raiders.
