UNDERSTANDING THE PSOAS MUSCLE: Free yourself from ongoing discomfort and pain through the integration of your whole being's health and happiness by Elizabeth Breckenridge 3.7 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified 49 minutes ago

Psoas syndrome is an uncommon, and often misdiagnosed, condition that can appear as refractory lower back pain (pain that stays even after treatment) accompanied by other symptoms. The condition occurs when the psoas muscle -- the long muscle (up to 16 inches) in your back -- is injured. The psoas muscle is located in the lower lumbar region of the spine and extends through the pelvis to the femur. This muscle works by flexing the hip joint and lifting the upper leg towards the body. A common example of the movement created from this muscle is walking. Psoas syndrome is a very rare condition. Other conditions -- disc herniation, arthritis, facet or sacroiliac pain -- are much more common. When those conditions are treated, often with physical therapy, the psoas muscle is also stretched and strengthened. This can help treat psoas syndrome without it ever being diagnosed. Busting Anti-Vax Myths! Seriously EXPERT Arguments for the Covid-Deniers in Your Life: The Great Covid Satire by Prof. Oisín MacAmadáin 4.7 Stars (88 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

NB: This book is a SATIRE. Prof. Oisín MacAmadaín is an expert, one of the best, in fact. Founder, sole lecturer and provost of The Termonfeckin Institute of Expertise in Ireland's beautiful Co. Louth, he knew that if there was one thing governments needed for their response to Covid, it was his enormous brains. Consequently, he has devoted every waking moment of the Covid Era to advising all government cabinets everywhere on the supreme value of masks, lockdowns, mandates and being vaccinated at least once a month. He was, at a certain point however, utterly horrified to learn of the existence of certain total thickos, tinfoil hat wearers and those who were generally of a conspiratorial disposition. Sensing that the mentally soft among us could be prone to believing any old kind of nonsense, he set out to write a book to counteract the nefarious mis-, dis- and downright crackpot information that is currently being spread among the nether regions of the internet. Do you have a neighbour or, heaven forbid, friend or family member, who regularly spews utter nonsense in your direction along the lines of their government being out to chip them or that a quack aromatherapy pill like vitamin D might save lives from Covid? Or perhaps you have been accosted by a random conspiracy theorist in the street who adamantly believes that everyone should add horse-dewormer to their morning coffee or that lockdowns aren't the pinnacle of scientific acumen that they clearly are and that whoever invented them should obviously win a Nobel Prize? This, at last!, is THE book you need in order to arm yourself with bulletproof arguments and put these poor deluded souls in their proper place once and for all! In it, you will learn: • How to counteract the views of fringe, far-right scientists who say that lockdowns mightn't be the best idea (!) • Why society under lockdown has arguably never been better for our general happiness levels or mental wellbeing • How to factcheck ...

Treatment For Bartholin Cysts And Abscesses by Nathaniel Weismann 4.3 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Since the discovery of Bartholin's gland in the 17th century there has not been any real beneficial scientific advancement on treatment of Bartholin's gland disorders. Current ways of treatment of cysts and abscesses of Bartholin's gland are not therapeutic and after rapture and drain recurrence is likely to happen. Traditional and modern medicine approaches the issue of Bartholin's cysts and abscesses in surgical way, even though clinical studies have shown that in large percentage of the cases presenting with these disorders bacterial populations are the main culprit. In plain words this means that the main cause for reoccurring Bartholin's gland cysts and abscesses in vast percentage of the presented cases are latent infections causing chronic immune response or the recurring inflammation of the Bartholin gland which then presents with the cysts and abscesses. In the eBook Treatment For Bartholin Cysts And Abscesses there is a therapeutic solution for Bartholin's gland cysts and abscesses.

Introduction to Biological Aging Theory by Theodore Goldsmith (Azinet Press) 4.0 Stars (52 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Why do we age? The answer to this question is critical to our ability to prevent and treat highly age-related diseases such as cancer and heart disease that now cause the majority of deaths in the developed world. For centuries aging has been considered an unalterable and therefore untreatable condition. We can find treatments for individual diseases but not for aging. Consequently, the effectiveness of medical treatment declines with age. New thinking backed by recent discoveries increasingly suggests that aging is itself a treatable condition and that treatments that delay aging can be found to treat or delay occurrence of age-related diseases. Anti-aging medicine is therefore possible. In addition, in order to understand (and find treatments for) age-related diseases we need to understand the biological mechanisms that cause the drastic increase in incidence with age. Different theories suggest very different disease mechanisms. This book provides an overview of biological aging theories including history, current status, major scientific controversies, current medical research, and implications for the future of medicine. Major topics include: human mortality as a function of age, aging mechanisms and processes, the programmed vs. non-programmed aging controversy, empirical evidence on aging, and the feasibility of anti-aging and regenerative medicine. Research and practice of anti-aging medicine is also discussed, Evolution theory is essential to aging theories. Theorists have been struggling for 160 years to explain how observed aging, deterioration, and consequent death fit with Darwin's survival-of-the-fittest concept. This book explains how continuing genetics discoveries have produced changes in the way we think about evolution that in turn lead to new thinking about the evolutionary nature of aging. Education Level: This book uses terminology like phenotype, diploid, introns, genome, and prokaryote, and is suitable for those having an ...

Searching for Dr. Harris: The Life and Times of a Remarkable African American Physician (Studies in Social Medicine) by Margaret Humphreys (The University of North Carolina Press) Price verified 4 hours ago

This is the untold story of Dr. J. D. Harris, an African American physician whose life and career straddled enormous changes for Black professionals and the practice of medicine. Born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Harris served as a contract physician to the Union Army and transitioned to a similar post under the Freedmen's Bureau, treating Black troops and freemen in Virginia. Margaret Humphreys narrates not only what we know about Harris, but offers context to his remarkable journey, including how incredible it was that a young man born into freedom in a slave state learned to read when literacy for Black people was illegal. He was one of very few African Americans to become a doctor before Howard Medical School opened in the 1870s, a fact that reveals both the structural barriers to medical education for Black Americans and highlights how those structures weakened in the 1860s. Drawing on census records, court records, Civil War and Reconstruction documents from the National Archives, African American newspapers, and more, this book is a revealing look at not only the history of medicine in the Southern United States, but of race and citizenship during one of the nation's most tumultuous eras.

Treatment of Functional Seizures in Children and Adolescents: A Mind-Body Manual for Health Professionals by Blanche Savage (Australian Academic Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 49 minutes ago

This treatment manual stems from a program developed by the mind-body team at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, a tertiary care paediatric hospital in New South Wales, Australia. The team's Mind-Body Program, organised as part of a consultation-liaison psychiatry service within the Department of Psychological Medicine, works with young people who present with functional somatic symptoms, including functional seizures. Also known as psychogenic non-epileptic seizures, stress seizures, or dissociative seizures, functional seizures are a subtype of functional neurological disorder. They are sudden, time-limited episodes of neural (brain) network dysregulation. Functional seizures can occur in young people who experience serious distress or high arousal, causing the neural pathways that support normal motor, sensory, interoceptive, emotional, and cognitive function to move into a state of overdrive. During a functional seizure, the young person typically experiences a loss of voluntary control of motor function, including shaking, jerking, twitching, loss of movement, or falling down (syncope/fainting-like episodes). The young person can also experience a change in consciousness - or even loss of consciousness - including zoning out, cognitive clouding, feeling weird or disconnected, or being unresponsive. This manual describes treatment interventions for functional seizures developed over the last 20 years through clinical trial and error, by translating research findings into clinical practice, and by evaluating treatment interventions through prospective cohort studies. It provides general guidelines, methods, and insights for clinicians as they approach the care of each individual patient. The goal of treatment is for young people to return to good health and to normal functioning and wellbeing. Therapists and other clinicians will need to adapt the ideas presented in this manual to their own specific clinical contexts - public or private; inpatient, day ...

Open by Marcus Engel 4.0 Stars (78 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

There's a tradition at Mercy Regional Hospital that the nurses take very seriously. The window blinds are always kept closed for a patient with a good prognosis. But for a patient who's not expected to make it, the blinds are left open so the soul can be set free when the time comes. Hope Wyatt, single mother, aspiring poet and new-to-practice nurse makes the mistake of closing the blinds on a terminally ill patient her first day on the job. Her colleagues quickly let her know what a tremendous foul-up she has made, and aren't in any rush to let her forget about it. When Hope's friend Will ends up in the ICU in a coma, she isn't sure if she should leave the blinds open or closed for him. Already struggling with the hard hand that life has dealt her, Hope tries her best to hold it all together and find some peace in the turmoil around her. Inspired by Saul, the husband of a cancer patient, and Marjorie, a fellow nurse on her unit, Hope adopts a new philosophy about coping with the emotional highs and lows of caregiving. One that gives her the strength to boldly defy the tradition of the blinds, and do what she knows in her heart is right.

Midwifery and Sexuality by Sam Geuens 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 3 hours ago

This first open-access book on midwifery and sexuality integrates sexual health into the care for the pregnant and postpartum couple. It addresses sexuality and intimacy from an education and prevention perspective instead of just focusing on treating problems, aiming to foster the development of sexual well-being and happy couplehood. Sexuality and intimacy are essential elements in the bonding of the couple and the parents-to-be. That process can be seriously hampered by sexual problems due to mutual misunderstanding, fear and sexual troubles (especially when the natural processes of conceiving, pregnancy and delivery are disturbed). In this phase of life, disruption of intimacy, sexuality and sexual relationship is a significant risk factor for developing couple and family problems. The need for such a book stems from the very limited attention given to this health area in the daily practice of most midwives and related healthcare professionals. An incredible and amazing performance. Learning Disability and Inclusion Phobia: Past, Present, Future (Routledge Advances in the Medical Humanities) by C. F. Goodey (Routledge) 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 hours ago

The social position of learning disabled people has shifted rapidly over the last 20 years, from long-stay institutions, first into community homes and day centres, and now to a currently emerging goal of "ordinary lives" for individuals using person-centred support and personal budgets. These approaches promise to replace a century and a half of "scientific" pathological models based on expert assessment, and of the accompanying segregated social administration which determined how and where people led their lives, and who they were. This innovative volume explains how concepts of learning disability, intellectual disability and autism first came about, describes their more recent evolution in the formal disciplines of psychology, and shows the direct relevance of this historical knowledge to present and future policy, practice and research. Goodey argues that learning disability is not a historically stable category and different people are considered "learning disabled" as it changes over time. Using psychological and anthropological theory, he identifies the deeper lying pathology as "inclusion phobia", in which the tendency of human societies to establish an in-group and to assign out-groups reaches an extreme point. Thus the disability we call "intellectual" is a concept essential only to an era in which to be human is essentially to be deemed intelligent, autonomous and capable of rational choice. Interweaving the author's historical scholarship with his practice-based experience in the field, Learning Disability and Inclusion Phobia challenges myths about the past as well as about present-day concepts, exposing both the historical continuities and the radical discontinuities in thinking about learning disability.

Digital Health Care in Taiwan: Innovations of National Health Insurance by Po-Chang Lee (Springer) Price verified 4 hours ago

This open access book introduces the National Health Insurance (NHI) system of Taiwan with a particular emphasis on its application of digital technology to improve healthcare access and quality. The authors explicate how Taiwan integrates its strong Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry with 5G to construct an information system that facilitates medical information exchange, collects data for planning and research, refines medical claims review procedures and even assists in fighting COVID-19. Taiwan's NHI, launched in 1995, is a single-payer system funded primarily through payroll-based premiums. It covers all citizens and foreign residents with the same comprehensive benefits without the long waiting times seen in other single-payer systems. Though premium rate adjustment and various reforms were carried out in 2010, the NHI finds itself at a crossroads over its financial stability. With the advancement of technologies and an aging population, it faces challenges of expanding coverage to newly developed treatments and diagnosis methods and applying the latest innovations to deliver telemedicine and more patient-centered services. The NHI, like the national health systems of other countries, also needs to address the privacy concerns of the personal health data it collects and the issues regarding opening this data for research or commercial use. In this book, the 12 chapters cover the history, characteristics, current status, innovations and future reform plans of the NHI in the digital era. Topics explored include: • Income Strategy • Payment Structure • Pursuing Health Equity • Infrastructure of the Medical Information System • Innovative Applications of the Medical Information • Applications of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Digital Health Care in Taiwan is essential reading for academic researchers and students in healthcare administration, health policy, health systems research, and health services delivery, as ...

Leaders of the Pack: Women and the Future of Veterinary Medicine (New Directions in the Human-Animal Bond) by Julie Kumble (Purdue University Press) 4.4 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Veterinary medicine has undergone sweeping changes in the last few decades. Women now account for 55 percent of the active veterinarians in the field, and nearly 80 percent of veterinary students are women. However, average salaries have dropped as this shift has occurred, and even with women in the vast majority, only 25 percent of leadership roles are held by women. These trends point to gender-based inequality that veterinary medicine, a profession that tilts so heavily toward women, is struggling to address. How will the profession respond? What will this mean for our students and schools? What will it mean for our pets entrusted to veterinarian care? Who has succeeded in these situations? Who is taking action to lead change? What can we learn from them to lead the pack in our lives? Leaders of the Pack, by Julie Kumble and Dr. Donald Smith, explores key themes in leadership and highlights women in veterinary medicine whose stories embody those themes. In it, Kumble and Smith cull over three years of interviews to profile a wide variety of women as they share triumphs and challenges, lucky as well as tough breaks, and the sound advice and words that inspired them to take their careers in unanticipated directions. By sharing unique stories that illuminate different paths to leadership and reflecting on best practices through commentary and research, Leaders of the Pack will allow more female leaders to create wider pathways to the top of their profession.

Aging by Design: How New Thinking on Aging Will Change Your Life by Theodore Goldsmith 3.6 Stars (55 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Why do we age? How do we age? These questions have baffled scientists for centuries and remain unresolved. The answer to the "how" question is critical to our ability to successfully prevent and treat age-related diseases like cancer and heart disease that now cause the majority of all deaths in the developed world. Because of major difficulties in directly experimentally determining causes of aging, the answer to the "why" question is critical to guiding research efforts directed toward identifying and altering processes involved in age-related diseases. Evolution theory plays a critical role in the "why" issue because it attempts to explain why each living organism has its particular design and therefore why different species display different aging characteristics and different life spans. This short book describes the history and current status of attempts to explain why we age extending from Darwin's 1859 theory to the present day. The author provides colorful and interesting descriptions of the theorists, their theories, the discoveries and the controversies that have led us to the current situation: Although there is very wide scientific agreement about most aspects of evolution theory, four different theories now exist concerning the fine details that apply to aging. These four theories lead to radically different concepts regarding the actual biological mechanisms behind the aging process and consequently the mechanisms behind age-related diseases. The book goes on to discuss observations and experiments that offer clues as to the nature of biological aging mechanisms. These include apparently non-aging animals, worm experiments, rat blood-exchange experiments, caloric restriction experiments, octopus experiments, and the discovery of genes that cause aging. Goldsmith then leads us through an analysis that concludes, based on the direct evidence and current status of the evolution theories, that programmed aging is the aging theory that best matches all ...

Postfeminism and Health: Critical Psychology and Media Perspectives (Critical Approaches to Health) by Sarah Riley (Routledge) Price verified 5 hours ago

Winner of the 2021 BPS Book Award: Academic Text category, this groundbreaking book employs a transdisciplinary and poststructuralist methodology to develop the concept of 'postfeminist healthism,' a twenty-first-century understanding of women's physical and mental health formed at the intersections of postfeminist sensibilities, neoliberal constructs of citizenship and the notion of health as an individual responsibility managed through consumption. Postfeminist healthism is used in this book to explore seven topics where postfeminist sensibility has the most impact on women's health: self-help, weight, surgical technologies, sex, pregnancy, responsibilities for others' health and pro-anorexia communities. The book explores the ways in which the desire to be normal and live a good life is tied to expectations of 'normal-perfection' circulated across interpersonal interactions, media representations and expert discourses. It diagnoses postfeminist healthism as unhealthy for both those women who participate in it and those whom it excludes and considers how more positive directions may emerge.? By exploring the under-researched intersection of postfeminism and health studies, this book will be invaluable to researchers and students in psychology, gender and women's studies, health research, media studies and sociology.

A Life of Worry: Politics, Mental Health, and Vietnam’s Age of Anxiety (Ethnographic Studies in Subjectivity Book 17) by Allen L Tran (University of California Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 2 hours ago

A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Who, what, and how we fear reflects who we are. In less than half a century, people in Vietnam have gone from fearing bombing raids, political persecution, and starvation to worrying about decisions over the best career path or cell phone plan. This shift in the landscape of people's anxieties is the result of economic policies that made Vietnam the second-fastest-growing economy in the world and a triumph of late capitalist development. Yet as much as people marvel at the speed of progress, all this change can be difficult to handle. A Life of Worry unpacks an ethnographic puzzle. What accounts for the simultaneous rise of economic prosperity and anxiety among Ho Chi Minh City's middle class? The social context of anxiety in Vietnam is layered within the development of advanced capitalism, the history of the medical and psychological sciences, and new ways of drawing the line between self and society. At a time when people around the world are turning to the pharmaceutical and wellness industries to soothe their troubled minds, it is worth considering the social and political dynamics that make the promises of these industries so appealing.

Getting Low in Familial Hypercholesterolemia: Reducing LDL-C and a Lifetime of Cardiovascular Risk by Michael Davidson, MD, FACC, FACP, FNLA (Integritas Communications) 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

FH is marked by high levels of circulating LDL-C, leading to increased risk of premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Patients frequently remain undiagnosed, resulting in poor outcomes and failure to diagnose family members. Clinicians should be aware of the diagnostic criteria as well as the importance of genetic testing. FH generally responds inadequately to traditional lipid-lowering therapies such as statins and often necessitates more effective biologic therapies. A multidisciplinary approach is needed in treating FH, and clinicians should be aware of recent discoveries in lipid genetics, currently endorsed diagnostic criteria, and recently approved and emerging agents to treat FH.

Cross Cultural Doctoring. On and Off the Beaten Path. by William LeMaire 4.1 Stars (153 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

In Cross Cultural Doctoring you will read about my career as a successful obstetrician and gynecologist in academic medicine at a major university. You will read why I decided at age 55 to leave my position, jump into the unknown and get off the beaten path. I will relate how my wife Anne and I accomplished this and how I kept working for various lengths of time in a number of different cultural settings around the world and how we travel extensively between assignments. The book is written as a series of loosely connected anecdotes, some medical, some non-medical. Some are funny and some are not so funny. When appropriate I have added some reflections about our experiences. I try to convey to the reader the excitement we have felt about our adventure. I hope that the book will inspire readers, medical and non-medical, to consider at some point of their careers to take the step to get off the beaten path. Anne and I certainly have never regretted our choices and have never looked back. Reading this book may also inspire readers to write their own story. I hope that you will enjoy reading the book as much as I have enjoyed writing it. I am not interested in making money from this book. I wanted to make the book available for free, but Amazon does not allow that. Thus the book is priced at the minimum of 99 cents. May I suggest that the reader make a charitable contribution to Hospital San Carlos in Chiapas, Mexico, in lieu of the usually accepted fee for a book of this nature. Their website is given on the first page of the book.

Mining Gold and Manufacturing Ignorance: Occupational Lung Disease and the Buying and Selling of Labour in Southern Africa by Jock McCulloch (Palgrave Macmillan) Price verified 55 minutes ago

This open access book charts how South Africa's gold mines have systematically suppressed evidence of hazardous work practices and the risks associated with mining. For most of the twentieth century, South Africa was the world's largest producer of gold. Although the country enjoyed a reputation for leading the world in occupational health legislation, the mining companies developed a system of medical surveillance and workers' compensation which compromised the health of black gold miners, facilitated the spread of tuberculosis, and ravaged the communities and economies of labour-sending states. The culmination of two decades of meticulous archival research, this book exposes the making, contesting, and unravelling of the companies' capacity to shape - and corrupt - medical knowledge.

So You're Having Trouble Swallowing by Theresa Richard 4.6 Stars (29 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

So you're having trouble swallowing. You feel anxiety during mealtime or avoid eating in public. Maybe you've been told that you need a feeding tube, will never eat or drink again, or can only consume thick liquids and chopped up foods. Guess what? You're not alone. Far from it. It's estimated that over ten million Americans are evaluated for swallowing disorders (dysphagia) each year. But if this is so common, why does it feel so lonely, scary, and frustrating? So You're Having Trouble Swallowing dives into the facts and frustrations of dysphagia and dysphagia therapy. Theresa Richard, author and dysphagia expert, is a speech-language pathologist who is board certified in swallowing and swallowing disorders. She is also a life-long advocate for her son who lives with a swallowing disorder. After years of clinical practice and fighting for her family, she realized a common thread in the world of swallowing disorders: a large gap exists between research and clinical practice. This gap is harming patients. Using her frustrations and expertise to fuel the flame, Theresa decided to change the way people receive care for their dysphagia by writing this book for you- the patient or caregiver. This book will teach you the essential information about swallowing, testing, treatment options, and how to advocate for the best care available. Dysphagia is far more than "just a disorder." It's a life-altering diagnosis that impacts social gatherings, holidays, family meals, and freedom. It can lead to hospitalizations, high medical costs, and depression. It steals a part of your identity and robs you of one of life's greatest joys. But it doesn't have to. Use this book to guide your questions. Find the right information to charge your advocacy. Most importantly, learn through Theresa's expertise and personal journey to get several steps closer to enjoying meals with your family once again.

Fast Facts for Patients: Non-small Cell Lung Cancer with KRAS Mutation by A.-M. Baird (S. Karger) Price verified 3 hours ago

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is one of two main types of lung cancer. Some lung cancers spread to other parts of the body before they are diagnosed. A cancer that has spread is called 'metastatic'. New lung cancer treatments are being developed that directly target the gene mutations that control how cancers grow and spread. The most important gene mutations in cancer are called 'driver mutations'. In NSCLC, this includes KRAS mutations, which can be used as targets for treatment. There are new treatments designed for lung cancers with a KRAS mutation that are already available. And more are being developed. Treatments in development are tested in clinical trials. There are several different phases of clinical trials that people with cancer can take part in. This booklet aims to help patients with NSCLC understand their options so that they can talk to their doctors, nurses, and medical team about their cancer and its treatment. Table of Contents: ? What is non-small cell lung cancer? ? How can lung cancer develop? ? What is metastatic NSCLC? ? More about genes and cancer ? Oncogenes and cancer ? Driver mutations and biomarkers ? How your doctor knows your cancer is KRAS-positive ? More about KRAS ? What does having a KRAS-positive cancer mean for me? ? Talking to your doctor about your treatment ? About clinical trials and research ? Finding further information and support

Carlos Chagas, um cientista do Brasil = Carlos Chagas, scientist of Brazil (Portuguese Edition) by Simone Petragli Kropf (SciELO - Editora FIOCRUZ) 4.6 Stars (79 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Microplastic in the Environment: Pattern and Process (Environmental Contamination Remediation and Management) by Michael S. Bank (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 hours ago

This open access book examines global plastic pollution, an issue that has become a critical societal challenge with implications for environmental and public health. This volume provides a comprehensive, holistic analysis on the plastic cycle and its subsequent effects on biota, food security, and human exposure. Importantly, global environmental change and its associated, systems-level processes, including atmospheric deposition, ecosystem complexity, UV exposure, wind patterns, water stratification, ocean circulation, etc., are all important direct and indirect factors governing the fate, transport and biotic and abiotic processing of plastic particles across ecosystem types. Furthermore, the distribution of plastic in the ocean is not independent of terrestrial ecosystem dynamics, since much of the plastic in marine ecosystems originates from land and should therefore be evaluated in the context of the larger plastic cycle. Changes in species size, distribution, habitat, and food web complexity, due to global environmental change, will likely alter trophic transfer dynamics and the ecological effects of nano- and microplastics. The fate and transport dynamics of plastic particles are influenced by their size, form, shape, polymer type, additives, and overall ecosystem conditions. In addition to the risks that plastics pose to the total environment, the potential impacts on human health and exposure routes, including seafood consumption, and air and drinking water need to be assessed in a comprehensive and quantitative manner. Here I present a holistic and interdisciplinary book volume designed to advance the understanding of plastic cycling in the environment with an emphasis on sources, fate and transport, ecotoxicology, climate change effects, food security, microbiology, sustainability, human exposure and public policy.

Research as Development: Biomedical Research, Ethics, and Collaboration in Sri Lanka by Salla Sariola (Cornell University Press) Price verified 6 hours ago

In Research as Development, Salla Sariola and Bob Simpson show how international collaboration operates in a setting that is typically portrayed as "resource-poor" and "scientifically lagging." Based on their long-term fieldwork in Sri Lanka, Sariola and Simpson bring into clear ethnographic focus the ways international scientific collaborations feature prominently in the pursuit of global health in which research operates "as" development and not merely "for" it. The authors follow the design, inception, and practice of two clinical trials: one a global health charity funded trial and the other a pharmaceutical industry-sponsored trial. Research as Development situates these two trials within their historical, political and cultural contexts and thus counters the idea that local actors are merely passive recipients of new technical and scientific rationalities. While social studies of clinical trials are beginning to be an established niche in academic writing, Research as Development helps fill important gaps in the literature through its examination of clinical research situated in cultures in low-income settings. Research as Development is noteworthy for the way it highlights the critical and creative role that local researchers play in establishing international collaborations and making them work into locally viable forms. The volume shows how these clinical and research interactions bring about changes in culture, technologies and expertise in Sri Lanka, contexts that have not previously been written about in any detail.

IAEA Atlas of Cardiac PET/CT: A Case-Study Approach by Marcelo F. Di Carli (Springer) 3.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 hours ago

This open access book presents a wide portfolio of examples of positron emission tomography coupled with computer tomography (PET/CT) studies in various cardiac conditions in order to provide a rationale for the implementation of this technology in an array of clinical conditions. Cardiovascular diseases are a major contributor to premature morbidity and mortality worldwide. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are particularly affected by cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), with more than 75% of all CVDs deaths occurring in these countries. For this reason, target 3.4 of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda aims at a 30% reduction in premature mortality due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which include CVDs, by 2030. Among CVDs, ischemic heart disease (IHD) plays an important role and, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), it was responsible for 15.96% of global deaths in 2017. Between 2000 and 2017, the number of IHD deaths worldwide increased by 0.26% per year. Several imaging tools help to non-invasively diagnose, stratify risk and guide management in cardiac disease. They include nuclear cardiology techniques, using either SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) or PET/CT. While myocardial imaging with SPECT has been fully embraced by the cardiology community and is widely available worldwide, PET/CT introduction has been slower, due not only to its higher costs, but also to the limited availability of PET/VCT scanners, mostly utilized for oncological applications. This book is an invaluable tool for nuclear medicine physicians, cardiologists and radiologists.

Medicine, Science, and Making Race in Civil War America by Leslie A. Schwalm (The University of North Carolina Press) 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 4 hours ago

This social and cultural history of Civil War medicine and science sheds important light on the question of why and how anti-Black racism survived the destruction of slavery. During the war, white Northerners promoted ideas about Black inferiority under the guise of medical and scientific authority. In particular, the Sanitary Commission and Army medical personnel conducted wartime research aimed at proving Black medical and biological inferiority. They not only subjected Black soldiers and refugees from slavery to substandard health care but also scrutinized them as objects of study. This mistreatment of Black soldiers and civilians extended after life to include dissection, dismemberment, and disposal of the Black war dead in unmarked or mass graves and medical waste pits. Simultaneously, white medical and scientific investigators enhanced their professional standing by establishing their authority on the science of racial difference and hierarchy. Drawing on archives of the U.S. Sanitary Commission, recollections of Civil War soldiers and medical workers, and testimonies from Black Americans, Leslie A. Schwalm exposes the racist ideas and practices that shaped wartime medicine and science. Painstakingly researched and accessibly written, this book helps readers understand the persistence of anti-Black racism and health disparities during and after the war.

Kantianism for Animals: A Radical Kantian Animal Ethic (The Palgrave Macmillan Animal Ethics Series) by Nico Dario Müller (Palgrave Macmillan) 3.9 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

This open access book revises Kant's ethical thought in one of its most notorious respects: its exclusion of animals from moral consideration. The book gives readers in animal ethics an accessible introduction to Kant's views on our duties to others, and his view that we have only 'indirect' duties regarding animals. It then investigates how one would have to depart from Kant in order to recognise that animals matter morally for their own sake. Particular attention is paid to Kant's 'Formula of Humanity,' the role of autonomy and the moral law, as well as Kant's notions of practical reason and animal instinct. The result is a deliberately amended version of Kantianism which nevertheless remains faithful to central aspects of Kant's thought. The book's final part illustrates the framework's use in applied contexts, addressing the issues of using animals as mere means, the ethics of veganism and vegetarianism, and environmental protection. Nico Dario Müller shows how, when furnished with duties to animals, Kant's moral philosophy can be a powerful resource for animal ethicists.

This open access book aims to primarily support nurses as leaders and champions of multimodal, Interdisciplinary nutrition care for older adults. A structured approach to fundamentals of nutrition care across Interdisciplinary settings is combined with additional short chapters about special topics in geriatric nutrition. The book is designed to provide highly accessible information on evidence-based management and care for older adults, with a focus on practical guidance and advice across acute, rehabilitation, and primary and secondary malnutrition prevention settings. The cost of malnutrition in England alone has been estimated to be £19.6 billion per year, or more than 15% of the total public expenditure on health and social care. ^65 years. The importance and benefit of specialised nutrition care, delivered by experts in field, is well established for those with complex nutrition care needs. However, despite the substantial adverse impact of malnutrition on patient and healthcare outcomes, specialised management of this condition is often under-resourced, overlooked and under-prioritised by both older adults and their treating teams. As an alternative, timely, efficient, and effective supportive nutrition care opportunities may be appropriately implemented by nurses and non-specialist Interdisciplinary healthcare team members, working together with nutrition specialists and the older adults they care for. Practical, low-risk opportunities should be considered across nutrition screening, assessment, intervention, and monitoring domains for many patients with, or at risk of malnutrition. Whilst a variety of team members may contribute to supportive nutrition care, the nursing profession provide a clear focal point. Nurses across diverse settings provide the backbone for Interdisciplinary teamwork and essential patient care. The nursing profession should consequently be considered best placed to administer Interdisciplinary, multimodal nutrition care, wherever ...
