How to Decode Sudden Unconsciousness: Exploring Medical Mysteries (Emergency Room Chronicles 2: The Ongoing Mission of Life Preservation Book 10) by Ella Medwise 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified one hour ago

Let me share with you a story about a patient we treated in the ICU. This man, 35 years old, had been feeling unwell for a week. Initially, he had fever, fatigue, and throat pain, which he thought was just a common cold. He went to a pharmacy and bought some cold medicine, but it didn't work well. His fever then continued to rise, reaching 40°C, and he felt extremely confused. His wife immediately brought him to our hospital's emergency department. It was summer, and the heat was unbearable. Our emergency department had treated several heatstroke patients in succession. So, when the emergency doctors saw the patient with high fever and impaired consciousness, they immediately considered the possibility of heatstroke or heat illness. They called me and said it might be heatstroke, requesting that I admit him to the ICU for treatment. Heatstroke is the most severe form of heat illness, and it can be fatal, with a mortality rate of at least 50%. None of us took it lightly. The key to treatment is to lower the patient's body temperature as quickly as possible, as excessively high temperatures can cause damage to tissues and cells, sometimes irreversibly. By the time I arrived at the emergency department, the patient's temperature had already dropped to 38°C, and his blood pressure and heart rate were stable. It seemed there was no imminent danger to his life. It almost seemed unnecessary to admit him to the ICU, and we were almost at full capacity, with only one bed left -- reserved for postoperative patients and not typically used for new admissions. However, the emergency doctors told me that it might not be heatstroke after all.
