Backpacking with Bryn- OUZO NIGHTS by BRYN M PARRY 3.9 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

What happens when that dreaded day draws near signifying the end of student-life and the beginning of some kind of eternal paid employment existence? Well... I tend to phone up my old schoolmate Shaun and ask him if he'd like to go backpacking... for perhaps the last time ever. The jaunt in question involved the lugging of packs around Corfu, Athens, Crete and Santorini. As well as getting seriously stuffed with a series of outrageously good meals we managed to collect some vivid memories of awesome natural phenomena, take part in a real-life rescue, emerge victorious from an insane football vendetta with Club 18 to 30, got robbed again and, most unfortunately, gained a real feeling that the whiff of misogyny was out and about in the hot Hellenic air...

In search of his family history, Brian Borgford travelled to Iceland to seek the origins of his ancestors. In his two-week trip Brian visited all the places described in his grandfather's memoir written over seventy years earlier. The magical sights in Iceland provided a link from days of Pagan worship to the days of mass migration from the harsh environment. Modern day Icelanders show a strong reverence for their history and culture. Icelandic Sagas still shape the thinking of the island's three hundred thousand residents.

Gateway of India: Discover India | Photojournals (Heritage of India Book 2) by David Riley 3.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Introduction Completed in 1924, the Gateway of India is an archway-shaped monument, built along the Arabian Sea in Bombay (now Mumbai). It was constructed to commemorate the landing of Queen Mary and King George V, on their Indian visit in 1911. Standing at 26 metres (85 feet) high, the arched structure was used as a symbolic ceremonial entrance to India, used by Viceroys and Governors of the British Empire ruling in India. Hence the name, "Gateway of India." The foundation stone of the stone structure was laid on March 31, 1913. The construction of the monument started in 1914, after the final design by George Wittet was sanctioned; and the building was completed in 1924. Since then, it has been one of the symbols of the city of Bombay/Mumbai. Today, it is treated as a historical monument and stands as one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city. History The original intention for building the Gateway of India, was to honour the visit of Queen Mary and King George V to Bombay in 1911, prior to the 'Delhi Durbar' (also known as Imperial Durbar) of December 1911. However, the structure wasn't ready during the time of their visit, and they only got to see a cardboard model of the structure; with the actual structure being completed only in 1924. The land on which the 'Gateway' was to be built, was earlier a crude jetty, used by the local fishing community. Plans were then made to renovate and reclaim pieces of land, to construct a ceremonial landing place for top British officials and other important people. According to the original plans, the Gateway of India would've been the first structure that anyone would see if coming to Mumbai by boat. The foundation stone of the structure was laid on March 31, 1913 and the construction according to George Wittet's plan began on March 31, 1914. Between 1915 and 1919, work to reclaim the land at Apollo Bundar (Port), took place; in order to reclaim the land where the new sea wall and the monument ...

Oahu Travel Guide: Experience Only the Best Places to Stay, Eat, Drink, Hike, Bike, Beach, Surf, Snorkel, and Discover in Oahu Hawaii (Things to Do ... by Oscar Kahekalau 3.3 Stars (51 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

If you're ready to explore the island of Oahu, skipping the tourist traps and hitting only the best of what this beautiful location has to offer, then this book is for you! Read on your PC, Mac, smart phone, tablet, or Kindle device. Legend has it that the islands were collectively named after the Polynesian navigator who discovered them, Hawai'iloa. The other islands were named after each of his sons, and one of them was Oahu. Roughly diamond-shaped and divided by a chain of mountains, Oahu was formed by two shield volcanoes. This means that the lava they formed is mostly fluid, allowing it to spill below and form the main valley in the middle, and the two narrower ones facing the sea on either side. Fascinating, isn't it? The same can be said about Oahu and all it has to offer. There's Waikiki, which contains some of the most expensive real estate in the world; there's Pearl Harbor, though thank goodness the Japanese are no longer belligerent; there's spectacular scenery; and of course, there's the beaches and all the bare bodies to ogle (though some would be better off covered, admittedly). Tourism is the island's main industry, so whether its nature you're after, city life with its clubs and shops, or something to do with culture, Oahu has it and more. Here Is A Preview Of What You'll Learn... • Planning an Unforgettable Oahu Getaway • Choosing the Right Place to Stay • Where to Eat and Drink • Best Places to Hike, and Best Places to Bike • Top Five Beaches for Surfing, Swimming, and Snorkeling • Exploring the Local History • Much, much more! A Long Way From Nowhere: A Couple's Journey on the Continental Divide Trail by Julie Urbanski 4.1 Stars (836 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

What is it like to hike the length of the Continental Divide Trail? For Matt and Julie, also known as Optimist and Stopwatch, life on the trail meant twenty-seven days without seeing another hiker, six bears encountered within fifteen hours, two sets of maps, a GPS, and a compass to find the trail, and both wildfires and massive flooding to add to the adventure. Hiking the trail also meant a dramatic shift in perspective, a strengthening of love and friendship, and a redefining of the journey. This is the story of the couple's 3,000 mile walk on the Continental Divide Trail, through New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. Both Optimist and Stopwatch play a role in narrating the story, revealing how differently they both think and act in the face of challenges but also how well they work together to complement each other. Few people know about the Continental Divide Trail and even fewer have hiked the entire length of it, creating an air of mystery surrounding the trail. Optimist and Stopwatch explore the many layers of the trail life on the Continental Divide Trail as they make their way over desolate terrain, eventually finding solace in the very aspects of the trail that made them question their desire to ever take on such a challenge.

Realm of the Adventurer: A Journey Beyond Boundaries by Patrick Malyszek (American Real Publishing) 4.8 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

"Your heart and soul are never more apparent until you are alone in the wilderness." - Patrick Malyszek As a young boy I always had a notion there was another side to life, a parallel life that was available to all but only a few that were graced with the ability to acknowledge and experience it. I wanted to find this parallel life and experience what it had to offer as compared to our regular everyday life... but I did not have a clue as to how to find and experience it. I would go into the forest every day regardless of the weather and spend hours and hours just thinking and exploring, trying to determine what the trigger was in order to experience this different side of life. What I learned is that you cannot use your regular life's experiences as the trigger. In order to really reach and experience the other side of life you must have not the ability, but rather the passion and desire to be a person that is willing to break their own social norms and challenge themselves with out of control experiences. These experiences create what I call a "bridge" from our common life to the life of an adventurer, which leads into what I have termed The Realm. A place of true love, support, and confidence. The transition from my common life, which is great by the way, to The Realm, which is mystic, is not an easy task and for most will never be achieved or experienced. But I made it, I found my "bridges" into The Realm. Yes! Bridges. There is not just one way to get into The Realm, there are actually hundreds of ways to get to that special place. My "bridges" into The Realm were found not by pressuring myself, which I had done for years, but through having an open mind to all things. I recall trying so hard but always finding myself a little lost and confused. It existed -- I knew that, but I could not grasp it. At times I would look to the world for the answer but knew deep inside that was wrong. Other times I would look to others for the "bridge" but every time I did ...

The Carshalton Pub Crawl: A History of its Inns, Taverns, Ale and Beer Houses by Colin Bartram 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified one hour ago

Carshalton began as a village to the south of London and has a rich history and legacy of public houses. The pub crawl is a British tradition of drunken revelry requiring several pubs in walking distance, for which Carshalton is well suited. The book, though, is a sober history of its pubs, that sheds light on Carshalton's journey from village to London suburb and on the evolution of the public house from inns and taverns, brewers and ale houses, through beer houses and hotels to the modern pub. We are introduced to many local characters and stories, both amusing and tragic, along the way. Drunken revelry is entirely optional!

Found, Lost, Paved and Sunk: Paradise by Jay Maclean 3.6 Stars (12 Reviews)    Price verified 51 minutes ago

Where is paradise on earth? Somewhere far from the maddening crowds, the cold, the politics, work, of course. People have been searching for their paradise for centuries, even before taxation was invented. The stories of those who wrote about their exploits often reveal more about themselves than the nature of the paradises they sought and sometimes found. Did you know that Sir Walter Raleigh was the world's first pusher of paradise real estate? Or that among the explorers of tropical paradises, the infamous Captain Bligh of the Bounty was quite humane and considerate? Or that Captain James Cook was the first westerner to get a tropical, full body massage -- and was pretty coy about describing it? That the original Shangri-La paradise was a mix of ascetic monks on top of a Tibetan mountain and a tropical village of loose women at its foot? That Thor Heyerdahl and his first wife honeymooned for a whole year in a remote tropical paradise, leading to his Polynesian migration theory and the Kon Tiki expedition? Found, Lost, Paved and Sunk: Paradise explores the mind set of artists, beachcombers, colonial administrators, developers, explorers, hermits, missionaries, mutineers, philosophers, scientists and writers, not to mention the native residents who were already living in the paradises they sometimes describe. Learn about the mechanics and problems of living in a paradise, dealing with neighbors both onshore and offshore, housing, water, and health. Learn about the fate of paradises under colonialism and climate change. Learn also about the opinions of other animals and plants; where is their paradise? The world is changing irreversibly. Where and how does paradise fit into its future? And finally, what does it all really mean? Found, Lost, Paved and Sunk: Paradise tells all. The book is punctuated with tongue-in-cheek tips for paradise seekers but is entirely factual and extensively referenced with about 200 sources, from exploits of early explorers and ...

Life on the Mississippi by Mark Twain 4.1 Stars (2,590 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

A stirring tribute to America's mightiest river by one of its greatest authors Before Samuel Clemens became Mark Twain, world-famous satirist and the acclaimed creator of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, he trained to be a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River. In this captivating memoir and travelogue, Twain recounts his apprenticeship under legendary captain Horace Bixby, an exacting mentor who teaches his charge how to navigate the ever-changing waterway. The colorful details of life on the river -- from the reversals of fortune suffered by riverboat gamblers to the feuds waged by towns seeking to profit from the steamboat trade -- fascinate Twain, and in his hands become the stuff of legend. Years later, as a passenger on a voyage from St. Louis to New Orleans, he vividly describes the stunning changes wrought by the Civil War and the steady advance of the railroads. A valuable piece of history and a revealing look at the origins of a national treasure, Life on the Mississippi is a true classic of American literature. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

OMAN (EN ANGLAIS) 2023/2024 Petit Futé by Dominique Auzias (Le Petit Futé) 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 4 hours ago

This sultanate is still a well-kept secret, a jewel with a case that has barely been opened. Yet it is perhaps the most attractive destination on the Arabian Peninsula. First of all for its pure and flawless landscape. Ochre sand dunes, arid or fertile plains, white sand beaches, turquoise water, steep cliffs, lush wadi, palm trees, coconut palms, more? Jagged mountain, deep gorge, perched village. Its people have a secular hospitality, its history goes back to the time when Mesopotamia, Egypt and Persia reigned supreme on earth, 3000 BC. Finally, for all that the country offers in terms of opportunities for discovery, encounters and adventure. It is a booming state that has experienced in less than 30 years an economic advance of several centuries. A development controlled for three decades by a sultan who knew how to take advantage of the wealth offered by black gold and gave the keys to unification: a name and a flag. The country has managed to keep its authenticity, punctuated by the daily rhythm of prayers. An omnipresent but tolerant religion, ibadism, a branch of Shi'ism, for the most stable, open and safe country in the region.

Yoga for Travel by Plane Train Bus Car by Lisa Shea 4.0 Stars (13 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

For many people, traveling is inherently stressful. There is the worry of not packing everything you need. The physical discomfort of being on the road. The illnesses of other travelers impacting your own health. Depending on where you go, there can be strange foods that your stomach is not quite willing to digest properly. Yoga can help with all of this. This book is designed to help you ease the stress of being on the road. By adding gentle movements to your travel routine you ensure your body gets the best possible chance to release those tense muscles and relax. That then boosts your immune system to ward off colds and germs. If you're in a situations where you're crossing time zones or dealing with other sleep issues, the meditation portion of this book can help immensely. Numerous studies show that meditation time is almost as good as sleep time for refreshing and refueling the brain. This book is a subset of my larger books on yoga and meditation. All of the books in this series are free. This book here is specifically aimed at techniques you can use when you travel. Namaste. This book Yoga for Travel by Plane Train Bus Car is intended to be free on all systems, to help those who are in need of support find a step toward a more contented life. If the system you are currently on requires a charge to download, all author's proceeds will benefit battered women's shelters. If you have never done yoga at all, I highly recommend you start with a live human being helping you in person. That person can ensure you hold the poses in a healthy, safe way. If you don't have access to a human, at least use a video of some sort to see the poses in motion. It's like learning the harp or learning to swim - you need to see how the whole body moves. My book then helps you understand my personal poses, to create an atmosphere of stress relief and forgiveness. Feel free to contact Lisa if you have any questions about her routine - she's happy to help!

PERFECT for Bill Bryson and Peter Mayle fans... think Peter Mayle meets George Carlin! Living the French dream... vineyards, sunflowers, lavender fields, glasses of wine and platters of fromage. The Gift of St. David: 'A tour of the Pembrokeshire Coast. by Geoffrey Peyton (BookRix) 3.0 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Because I am an avid rambler of the British countryside, someone suggested that I should take a walk along the coast of Pembrokeshire as it is a mirror image of my passion in hiking; that being the North Cornish Coast. I wasn't to be disappointed, and so I decided to spend a few days at the quaint village of Manorbier, which is just over 50 miles west of Swansea in South Wales. This was to be my finale of the year for treading Britain's natural countryside, and Manorbier became the autumn recluse for my finale of trekking for 2013 in the wilds of glorious Wales.

Conversational Portuguese Quick and Easy: The Most InnovativeTechnique to Master the Brazilian-Portuguese Language by Yatir Nitzany 4.2 Stars (23 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Have you always wanted to learn how to speak Portuguese but simply didn't have the time? Well if so, then, look no further. You can hold in your hands one of the most advanced and revolutionary method that was ever designed for quickly becoming conversational in a language. In creating this time-saving program, master linguist Yatir Nitzany spent years examining the twenty-seven most common languages in the world and distilling from them the three hundred and fifty words that are most likely to be used in real conversations. These three hundred and fifty words were chosen in such a way that they were structurally interrelated and, when combined, form sentences. Through various other discoveries about how real conversations work -- discoveries that are detailed further in this book -- Nitzany created the necessary tools for linking these words together in a specific way so that you may become rapidly and almost effortlessly conversant -- now. If your desire is to learn complicated grammatical rules or to speak perfectly proper and precise Portuguese, this book is not for you. However, if you need to actually hold a conversation while on a trip to Brazil or Portugal, to impress that certain someone, or to be able to speak with your grandfather or grandmother as soon as possible, then the Nitzany Method is what you have been looking for. This method is designed for fluency in a foreign language, while communicating in the present tense. Nitzany believes that what's most important is actually being able to understand and be understood by another human being right away. More formalized training in grammar rules, etc., can come later. This isn't a pronunciation book. Thus, this book is recommended for those with prior knowledge in pronunciation of the Portuguese language. However, for those who aren't previously familiar, this book does provide some basic tools to teach pronunciation. The main thing this book offers is the necessary tools to become conversational in a ...

It was the spring of 2014. My brother Sasha and I were spending a month roaming around the beautiful peninsula of Istria, in Croatia, where our mother was born. Friends at home in San Francisco raved about Croatia as a tourist destination. For me, Croatia was the place of disasters that started long before I was born, swept me and my family up, and caused our expulsion--which had continued until just a few years earlier. Could the tide have turned? I wanted to know. I wanted to go beneath the surface to learn what was happening in the countries of the former Yugoslavia, with which my family had such deep roots. This is the story of our time in Croatia, of conversations with and unique insights gained from interactions with the locals. Not everything, we learned, was quite as it seemed.
