Backpacking with Bryn- OUZO NIGHTS by BRYN M PARRY 3.9 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

What happens when that dreaded day draws near signifying the end of student-life and the beginning of some kind of eternal paid employment existence? Well... I tend to phone up my old schoolmate Shaun and ask him if he'd like to go backpacking... for perhaps the last time ever. The jaunt in question involved the lugging of packs around Corfu, Athens, Crete and Santorini. As well as getting seriously stuffed with a series of outrageously good meals we managed to collect some vivid memories of awesome natural phenomena, take part in a real-life rescue, emerge victorious from an insane football vendetta with Club 18 to 30, got robbed again and, most unfortunately, gained a real feeling that the whiff of misogyny was out and about in the hot Hellenic air...

Digging for Roots: Travels in Iceland by Brian Borgford 4.2 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 15 minutes ago

In search of his family history, Brian Borgford travelled to Iceland to seek the origins of his ancestors. In his two-week trip Brian visited all the places described in his grandfather's memoir written over seventy years earlier. The magical sights in Iceland provided a link from days of Pagan worship to the days of mass migration from the harsh environment. Modern day Icelanders show a strong reverence for their history and culture. Icelandic Sagas still shape the thinking of the island's three hundred thousand residents.

Gateway of India: Discover India | Photojournals (Heritage of India Book 2) by David Riley 3.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 3 hours ago

Introduction Completed in 1924, the Gateway of India is an archway-shaped monument, built along the Arabian Sea in Bombay (now Mumbai). It was constructed to commemorate the landing of Queen Mary and King George V, on their Indian visit in 1911. Standing at 26 metres (85 feet) high, the arched structure was used as a symbolic ceremonial entrance to India, used by Viceroys and Governors of the British Empire ruling in India. Hence the name, "Gateway of India." The foundation stone of the stone structure was laid on March 31, 1913. The construction of the monument started in 1914, after the final design by George Wittet was sanctioned; and the building was completed in 1924. Since then, it has been one of the symbols of the city of Bombay/Mumbai. Today, it is treated as a historical monument and stands as one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city. History The original intention for building the Gateway of India, was to honour the visit of Queen Mary and King George V to Bombay in 1911, prior to the 'Delhi Durbar' (also known as Imperial Durbar) of December 1911. However, the structure wasn't ready during the time of their visit, and they only got to see a cardboard model of the structure; with the actual structure being completed only in 1924. The land on which the 'Gateway' was to be built, was earlier a crude jetty, used by the local fishing community. Plans were then made to renovate and reclaim pieces of land, to construct a ceremonial landing place for top British officials and other important people. According to the original plans, the Gateway of India would've been the first structure that anyone would see if coming to Mumbai by boat. The foundation stone of the structure was laid on March 31, 1913 and the construction according to George Wittet's plan began on March 31, 1914. Between 1915 and 1919, work to reclaim the land at Apollo Bundar (Port), took place; in order to reclaim the land where the new sea wall and the monument ...
