Living in a Nuclear World: From Fukushima to Hiroshima (History and Philosophy of Technoscience) by Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent (Routledge) Price verified 8 hours ago

The Fukushima disaster invites us to look back and probe how nuclear technology has shaped the world we live in, and how we have come to live with it. Since the first nuclear detonation (Trinity test) and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, all in 1945, nuclear technology has profoundly affected world history and geopolitics, as well as our daily life and natural world. It has always been an instrument for national security, a marker of national sovereignty, a site of technological innovation and a promise of energy abundance. It has also introduced permanent pollution and the age of the Anthropocene. This volume presents a new perspective on nuclear history and politics by focusing on four interconnected themes-violence and survival; control and containment; normalizing through denial and presumptions; memories and futures-and exploring their relationships and consequences. It proposes an original reflection on nuclear technology from a long-term, comparative and transnational perspective. It brings together contributions from researchers from different disciplines (anthropology, history, STS) and countries (US, France, Japan) on a variety of local, national and transnational subjects. Finally, this book offers an important and valuable insight into other global and Anthropocene challenges such as climate change.

CLASH OF TITANS: The USA-China AI Warfare and the Faith of Human Civilization by AIMQWEST Corporation 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 minutes ago

In the dawning years of the 21st century, the geopolitical landscape is being reshaped by two colossal forces: the United States of America and the People's Republic of China. The ongoing tensions between these two superpowers, driven by trade disputes and territorial conflicts, particularly over Taiwan, have placed the world on a precarious edge. "Clash of Titans: The USA-China AI War and the Fate of Human Civilization" delves into the intricate web of political maneuvers, economic strategies, and military posturing that define this high-stakes rivalry, with a particular focus on the unprecedented AI arms race currently in full swing. As of May 2024, the conflict between the USA and China has intensified, spurred by a myriad of factors including trade imbalances, technological espionage, and the contentious issue of Taiwan's sovereignty. This book explores the roots of these tensions, tracing them back to the end of the Cold War and the subsequent rise of China as a global economic powerhouse. Through detailed analysis, the book examines how China's Belt and Road Initiative, its assertive military expansions in the South China Sea, and its strategic alliances with Russia and other BRICS nations have challenged the US-led world order. Central to this confrontation is the AI war -- a silent yet fiercely competitive struggle for dominance in artificial intelligence technologies. Both nations have poured vast resources into developing AI capabilities, with applications ranging from economic efficiencies to advanced military systems. The book scrutinizes the implications of this AI arms race, highlighting how AI-driven innovations are not only transforming economies but also revolutionizing warfare. The AI war introduces a new dimension to this rivalry, where autonomous weapons and AI-driven decision-making systems could lead to a new form of warfare. This book considers several potential scenarios for the evolution of the USA-China conflict over the next five ...

Contemplations: A Different Path To The Sacred by Aenga Besceawung 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 minutes ago

Contemplations is a radical departure from mainstream thought on matters of culture, religion, and philosophy for the simple reason that it offers to one who chooses to see as I have seen, an experiential, open, and earnest path to the Sacred in this time of spiritual deception, blind grasping for purchase on purpose, and chronic longing for a crumb of dignity and for a taste of meaning in life. Set your expectations from the beginning: Contemplations is not an instruction manual to health, wealth, and happiness. It does not moralize at you or wield the whip of shame to force you to conform. It will not give you the means to unlock mysterious or ethereal magic of ancients as all such things are lures for the simple, crutches for the foolish, and deceit for the gullible. Contemplations earnestly offers another path based upon experience and observation. It avails you of the choice to benefit from what you will build upon its teachings within your life rather than to be bound to only what is approved. It leads to a path of your own should you choose to make it so.

Bloomed to Be Messy: A Small Town Sweet Romantic Comedy (Messy Love on Mango Lane) by Dineen Miller 4.4 Stars (78 Reviews)    Price verified 25 minutes ago

She almost had it all. When she's forced to return home, will she find all the love she's ever wanted? I was this close to making my dreams come true. Hightailing it out of small-town Florida for the Big Apple, I went to art school and was in the running for the perfect job when the aunt who raised me died. Good news: She left me everything she had. Bad news: That includes her flower shop, which I have to run successfully for a year before I'm allowed to sell it. So now, I'm back where I don't want to be, trying to fix up a business that seems to be better at providing shelter for raccoons and cockroaches than making money. And that's when he shows up: Kade Maverick. The guy who bullied me in high school. Owner of the sparkling green eyes I've never been able to ignore. He's changed somehow. It's not just that he's got a scar on his face from a motorcycle accident. He's... vulnerable? He has a four-year-old niece he's caring for, and he's willing to do anything to help me fix up the store. As business starts to boom, we're getting close. Too close. Everything feels perfect. But I'm going back to NYC when my year is up, and he's just not a part of those plans. Right? Bloomed to Be Messy is the delightful first book in the Messy Love on Mango Lane closed door romantic comedy series. If you like heroines in over their heads, broody scarred men, and discovering you can go home again, then you'll adore Dineen Miller's happily-ever-after hijinks. The Travelling Scrub Suit by Jaime Wisnowski 5.0 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 5 minutes ago

The author aims to invite the reader into the life and mind of an unlikely nursing candidate and how the nursing profession found her and propelled her throughout a multitude of tragedies and triumphs both personally and professionally. Beginning with the recollection of her first "stick" and first bed bath and recounting the awesome honor of assisting a grieving family after pronouncing a loved one's passing. The stories portrayed are both factual and educational, however the tone and manner are light and humorous and in several cases attempt to disclose a nurse's inner thoughts during specific situations that get her through the most difficult and challenging times. Beyond the professional experiences ; how strength and intimate knowledge of the workings of the health care system allowed for the overcoming of bureaucracies and challenges that ventured to extinguish her plight. The piece attempts to reveal the raw feelings and thinking of a nurse as she is and does in her vocation but more importantly... how she/he uses those exact same feelings and awareness to advocate and protect those she/he loves when all odds are against them. The story comes full circle when a young woman becomes a nurse against all odds, conquering a devastating eating disorder and domestic violence and finding a way to not only save herself but to make a difference if only in one life. Her experiences and her patients complete her in a way that she never thought possible, bringing closure and peace and a renewed sense of purpose that she had never anticipated.

Available Open Access digitally under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. Bringing together divergent approaches to justice theorising, this volume connects normative and philosophical theories with the more empirically focused approaches emerging today in the social and political sciences and policy scholarship. The chapters overview a variety of mainstream approaches and radical critiques of justice to illustrate their value in addressing the pressing problems of climate change and economic development. Stressing the value of assessing justice theories in light of the material conditions of our changing world, the book concludes with an in-depth synthesis of how these wide ranging approaches to justice will be useful for students, scholars and practitioners concerned with realising justice.

What's Breath Got to Do With it: Synchronizing breathing with being by Offer Dan 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 minutes ago

For your information You can find on the internet and download the complete eBook for free. Those who "laugh last" are the ones who postpone the last breath and breathe well until the day comes. My mom practiced Yoga and was a breathwork instructor. I started juggling my breath at the age of nine. Five decades later, I decided to write about my methods, personal experiences, and intimate memoirs, sharing my insights. The book is a culmination of persistent knowledge-seeking guided by science and cross-examined by personal observations; the approach sidesteps from the trodden path in presentation and interpretation. Even though Air is light, the subject of breathing can be heavy, burdened with myths and mystic words. I aim to simplify tangled topics yet deeply penetrate the matters discussed. The added humor should assist in digesting the fiber of understanding respiration. Here's a summary of what's covered: • Basic explanations of the biology and chemistry of breathing. • Indications to assess personal effects of different breathing practices. • Practical ways to evaluate an individual's breathing profile. • Breathing exercises for physical and mental wellness. • Breathing tools for responding to immediate situations. Chances are my breathing practices will affect you differently than they affect me. Therefore, I intend to provide you with the know-hows and ways to tweak my practices so they may better suit you as an individual. Along the way, I will answer many questions like the ones below. • Why do traumatic events register differently when screaming out as opposed to holding the breath? • How can synchronizing smiles with inhaling augment the effect of breathing exercises? • How can video recordings of night sleeping make mouth-taping redundant? • How does a 'breathing clock' improve body language synchronization when speaking to an audience? • How does 'Dying man's breathing' assist in overcoming cravings? • How can the ...

Twilight Zone Reflections: An Introduction to the Philosophical Imagination by Saul Traiger Price verified 7 hours ago

Twilight Zone Reflections is the first book of its kind to explore the entirety of The Twilight Zone (1959-1964) as a series. It acts as both an introduction to the field of philosophy and as a complete guide to the philosophical issues illustrated throughout the original 1959-64 television series. Author Saul Traiger explores each of the 156 episodes, investigating the show's themes in metaphysics, epistemology, moral and political philosophy, and other topics in a way that is accessible to both seasoned philosophers and those outside academia. Each short chapter dives into a single episode and concludes with helpful cross-references to other episodes that explore similar philosophical problems and subjects. For example, a reader may be interested in questions about the nature of the mind and whether machines can think. By referencing this book, they could easily discover the thematic connections between episodes like "I Sing the Body Electric" or "The Lateness of the Hour," and learn how both episodes introduce the viewer to possible worlds that challenge us to consider whether our idea of the mind, and even our very personhood, extends beyond the human to robots and other artificial intelligences. Each chapter introduces fundamental philosophical questions such as these through the lens of The Twilight Zone and inspires additional exploration. Further readings are suggested for all episodes, making this volume indispensable to academics, students, and fans of the show. Each chapter is short and accessible, ensuring that this book is the perfect resource to accompany a complete series re-watch. The Twilight Zone considered questions that strike at the heart of philosophical inquiry, such as the nature of self, the existence of god, the possibility of an afterlife, the relationship between knowledge and mental illness, the nature of possibility, even the nature of imagination itself, and so much more. Traiger argues that each episode can serve as an entry ...

Environmental Knowledge, Race, and African American Literature (Literatures, Cultures, and the Environment) by Matthias Klestil (Palgrave Macmillan) 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified one hour ago

This open access book suggests new ways of reading nineteenth-century African American literature environmentally. Combining insights from ecocriticism, African American studies, and Foucauldian theory, Matthias Klestil examines forms of environmental knowledge in African American writing ranging from antebellum slave narratives and pamphlets to Charlotte Forten's journals, Booker T. Washington's autobiographies, and Charles W. Chesnutt's short fiction. The volume highlights how literary forms of environmental knowledge in the African American tradition were shaped by the histories of slavery and race, mainstream environmental writing traditions, and African American forms of expression and intertextuality. Turning to the Underground Railroad, debates over education and home-building, and the aesthetics of the pastoral and the georgic, Environmental Knowledge, Race, and African American Literature provides an original perspective on the African American ecoliterary traditionthat uncovers new facets of canonical and understudied texts and offers new directions for ecocriticism and African American studies.

This volume features new work on cinema in early twentieth-century Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Republican China. Looking beyond relatively well-studied cities like Shanghai, these essays foreground cinema's relationship with imperialism and colonialism and emphasize the rapid development of cinema as a sociocultural institution. These essays examine where films were screened; how cinema-going as a social activity adapted from and integrated with existing social norms and practices; the extent to which Cantonese opera and other regional performance traditions were models for the development of cinematic conventions; the role foreign films played in the development of cinema as an industry in the Republican era; and much more.

Surrender: How the Clinton Administration Completed the Reagan Revolution by Michael Allen Meeropol 4.3 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

Michael Meeropol argues that the ballooning of the federal budget deficit was not a serious problem in the 1980s, nor were the successful recent efforts to get it under control the basis for the prosperous economy of the mid-1990s. In this controversial book, the author provides a close look at what actually happened to the American economy during the years of the "Reagan Revolution" and reveals that the huge deficits had no negative effect on the economy. It was the other policies of the Reagan years--high interest rates to fight inflation, supply-side tax cuts, reductions in regulation, increased advantages for investors and the wealthy, the unraveling of the safety net for the poor--that were unsuccessful in generating more rapid growth and other economic improvements. Meeropol provides compelling evidence of the failure of the U.S. economy between 1990 and 1994 to generate rising incomes for most of the population or improvements in productivity. This caused, first, the electoral repudiation of President Bush in 1992, followed by a repudiation of President Clinton in the 1994 Congressional elections. The Clinton administration made a half-hearted attempt to reverse the Reagan Revolution in economic policy, but ultimately surrendered to the Republican Congressional majority in 1996 when Clinton promised to balance the budget by 2000 and signed the welfare reform bill. The rapid growth of the economy in 1997 caused surprisingly high government revenues, a dramatic fall in the federal budget deficit, and a brief euphoria evident in an almost uncontrollable stock market boom. Finally, Meeropol argues powerfully that the next recession, certain to come before the end of 1999, will turn the predicted path to budget balance and millennial prosperity into a painful joke on the hubris of public policymakers. Accessibly written as a work of recent history and public policy as much as economics, this book is intended for all Americans interested in issues of economic ...

The Far Shore by Edward Ellsberg 4.6 Stars (577 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

June 6, 1944, D-Day: Allied forces took the beaches at Normandy -- and the naval engineering genius of Edward Ellsberg would play a crucial part. Before World War II, Edward Ellsberg had already established himself as a true innovator and master naval engineer, revolutionizing the salvage and rescue of sunken vessels like no one before. Then, having served his country for over a decade, he retired to private life. But his work was not finished. Within hours of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the aging and physically ill Ellsberg was on a train to Washington, DC, to offer his services once again. And they would be needed for the greatest military invasion in human history. In The Far Shore, Rear Admiral Ellsberg describes in detail the meticulous preparation and efforts behind the Normandy Invasion -- efforts that would keep the flow of men and materials streaming onto the beaches and into the heart of Europe. From dealing with the extremes of engineering possibilities to wrestling with the knowledge that countless lives would depend on the success of his intricate planning, Ellsberg would work himself into exhaustion to do his part. His achievements would eventually earn him the Distinguished Service Medal and lead to his appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Vividly described by a man who saw firsthand the horrors of war and the cost of victory, The Far Shore takes readers through the brutal surf, onto the bloody beaches, and into the mind of one of World War II's little-known heroes.

Misreading the Bengal Delta: Climate Change, Development, and Livelihoods in Coastal Bangladesh (Culture, Place, and Nature) by Camelia Dewan 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 7 hours ago

Perilously close to sea level and vulnerable to floods, erosion, and cyclones, Bangladesh is one of the top recipients of development aid earmarked for climate change adaptation. Yet to what extent do adaptation projects address local needs and concerns? Combining environmental history and ethnographic fieldwork with development professionals, rural farmers, and landless women, Misreading the Bengal Delta critiques development narratives of Bangladesh as a "climate change victim." It examines how development actors repackage colonial-era modernizing projects, which have caused severe environmental effects, as climate-adaptation solutions. Seawalls meant to mitigate against cyclones and rising sea levels instead silt up waterways and induce drainage-related flooding. Other adaptation projects, from saline aquaculture to high-yield agriculture, threaten soil fertility, biodiversity, and livelihoods. Bangladesh's environmental crisis goes beyond climate change, extending to coastal vulnerabilities that are entwined with underemployment, debt, and the lack of universal healthcare. This timely book analyzes how development actors create flawed causal narratives linking their interventions in the environment and society of the Global South to climate change. Ultimately, such misreadings risk exacerbating climatic threats and structural inequalities. Misreading the Bengal Delta is available in an open access edition through the Sustainable History Monograph Pilot, thanks to the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The Disarticulate: Language, Disability, and the Narratives of Modernity (Cultural Front Book 8) by James Berger (NYU Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Language is integral to our social being. But what is the status of those who stand outside of language? The mentally disabled, "wild" children, people with autism and other neurological disorders, as well as animals, infants, angels, and artificial intelligences, have all engaged with language from a position at its borders. In the intricate verbal constructions of modern literature, the 'disarticulate' -- those at the edges of language -- have, paradoxically, played essential, defining roles. Drawing on the disarticulate figures in modern fictional works such as Billy Budd, The Sound and the Fury, Nightwood, White Noise, and The Echo Maker, among others, James Berger shows in this intellectually bracing study how these characters mark sites at which aesthetic, philosophical, ethical, political, medical, and scientific discourses converge. It is also the place of the greatest ethical tension, as society confronts the needs and desires of "the least of its brothers." Berger argues that the disarticulate is that which is unaccountable in the discourses of modernity and thus stands as an alternative to the prevailing social order. Using literary history and theory, as well as disability and trauma theory, he examines how these disarticulate figures reveal modernity's anxieties in terms of how it constructs its others.

The Nature-Study Idea: And Related Writings (The Liberty Hyde Bailey Library) by Liberty Hyde Bailey Price verified 8 hours ago

In The Nature-Study Idea, Liberty Hyde Bailey articulated the essence of a social movement, led by ordinary public-school teachers, that lifted education out of the classroom and placed it into firsthand contact with the natural world. The aim was simple but revolutionary: sympathy with nature to increase the joy of living and foster stewardship of the earth. With this definitive edition, John Linstrom reintroduces The Nature-Study Idea as an environmental classic for our time. It provides historical context through a wealth of related writings, and introductory essays relate Bailey's vision to current work in education and the intersection of climate change and culture. In this period of planetary turmoil, Bailey's ambition to cultivate wonder (in adults as well as children) and lead readers back into the natural world is more important than ever.

Organizational Design by Alan S. Gutterman (Sustainable Entrepreneurship Project) 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 7 hours ago

An organization does not simply appear on its own; in fact, organizations are contrived social systems that are created by like-minded groups of persons in order to pursue and hopefully achieve a stated goal or purpose. Organizational design is concerned with the factors and issues that must be considered, and the rules and processes that must be implemented, with respect to the design, development, implementation and maintenance of a successful and effective organization. Organizational design is more than simply organizational structure -- the boxes and lines that are normally found on a traditional organization chart -- and extends outward to include a variety of other factors including information and reward systems; management and decision making processes; organizational culture, including mission, vision, values and norms; strategy, including the goals or purposes for which the organization exists; and the human resources who will do the work necessary for the organization to operate, survive and thrive. This book is intended to be a valuable resource for anyone who finds themselves operating in the important role of "organizational designer".

Diamonds and War: State, Capital, and Labor in British-Ruled Palestine by David De Vries (Berghahn Books) 3.2 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

The mining of diamonds, their trading mechanisms, their financial institutions, and, not least, their cultural expressions as luxury items have engaged the work of historians, economists, social scientists, and international relations experts. Based on previously unexamined historical documents found in archives in Belgium, England, Israel, the Netherlands, and the United States, this book is the first in English to tell the story of the formation of one of the world's main strongholds of diamond production and trade in Palestine during the 1930s and 1940s. The history of the diamond-cutting industry, characterized by a long-standing Jewish presence, is discussed as a social history embedded in the international political economy of its times; the genesis of the industry in Palestine is placed on a broad continuum within the geographic and economic dislocations of Dutch, Belgian, and German diamond-cutting centers. In providing a micro-historical and interdisciplinary perspective, the story of the diamond industry in Mandate Palestine proposes a more nuanced picture of the uncritical approach to the strict boundaries of ethnic-based occupational communities. This book unravels the Middle-eastern pattern of state intervention in the empowerment of private capital and recasts this craft culture's inseparability from international politics during a period of war and transformation of empire.

Mission AI: The New System Technology (Research for Policy) by Haroon Sheikh (Springer) 4.5 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

This open access book offers a strategic perspective on AI and the process of embedding it in society. ?After decades of research, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now entering society at large. Due to its general purpose character, AI will change society in multiple, fundamental and unpredictable ways. Therefore, the Netherlands Scienti?c Council for Government Policy (WRR) characterizes AI as a system technology: a rare type of technologies that have a systemic impact on society. Earlier system technologies include electricity, the combustion engine and the computer. The history of these technologies provides us with useful insights about what it takes to direct the introduction of AI in society. The WRR identifies five key tasks to structurally work on this process: demystification, contextualisation, engagement, regulation and positioning. By clarifying what AI is (demystification), creating a functional ecosystem (contextualisation), involving diverse stakeholders (engagement), developing directive frameworks (regulation) and engaging internationally (positioning), societies can meaningfully influence how AI settles. Collectively, these activities steer the process of co-development between technology and society, and each representing a different path to safeguard public values. Mission AI - The New System Technology was originally published as an advisory report for the government of the Netherlands. The strategic analysis and the outlined recommendations are, however, relevant to every government and organization that aims to take up 'misson AI' and embed this newest system technology in our world.

The Concierge Class: How an unseen army of fixers is undermining democracy on behalf of corporations and the rich. And what we can do about it. by Kit Sadgrove 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Every day, an unseen army is working to advance the aims of corporations and the rich. From accountants to trade associations, and from scientists to think tanks, the members of the concierge class serve their masters diligently, devising ways to help them evade taxes, change legislation, and sway public opinion. And the result is more profit for the rich, a widening of inequality, and a weakening of democracy. The Concierge Class is the first book to explain the inner workings of concierge capitalism. It shows how the affluent co-opt skilled professionals into hiding their cash, pushing their agenda, and whispering in the ears of politicians. The book reveals who is doing the wealthy's dirty work, how they do it, and the steps we can take to stop it.

Urban Living Lab for Local Regeneration: Beyond Participation in Large-scale Social Housing Estates (The Urban Book Series) by Nele Aernouts (Springer) 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 6 hours ago

This open access book provides an integrated overview of the challenges and resources of large-scale social housing estates in Europe and outlines possible interdisciplinary approaches and tools to promote their regeneration. It especially focuses on the tool of urban living labs, as promising in promoting new and more effective local governance and in including the different actors into the planning process. The book combines theory and practice, since it is the result of action-research conducted in different social housing estates all over Europe. Building on the results of the SoHoLab project (2017-2020), the book benefits from a multidisciplinary perspective, since the researchers involved belong to the fields of anthropology, urban planning, architecture, urban sociology. The project combined theoretical reflections with the installation and/or the consolidation of Urban Living Labs, run by universities, in large social housing estates in three European cities: Brussels, Milan and Paris.

New Social Mobility: Second Generation Pioneers in Europe (IMISCOE Research Series) by Jens Schneider (Springer) 3.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 8 hours ago

This open access book comparatively analyses intergenerational social mobility in immigrant families in Europe. It is based on qualitative in-depth research into several hundred biographies and professional trajectories of young people with an immigrant working-class background, who made it into high-prestige professions. The biographies were collected and analysed by a consortium of researchers in nine European countries from Norway to Spain. Through these analyses, the book explores the possibilities of cross-country comparisons of how trajectories are related to different institutional arrangements at the national and local level. The analysis uncovers the interaction effects between structural/institutional settings and specific individual achievements and family backgrounds, and how these individuals responsed to and navigated successfully through sector-specific pathways into high-skilled professions, such as becoming a lawyer or a teacher. By this, it also explains why thesetrajectories of professional success and upward mobility have been so exceptional in the second generation of working-class origins, and it tells us a lot also about exclusion mechanisms that marked the school and professional careers of children of immigrants who went to school in the 1970s to 2000s in Europe - and still do.

Saving and Investment in the Twenty-First Century: The Great Divergence by Carl Christian von Weizsäcker (Springer) 4.6 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

The economy of the 21st century in the OECD countries and in China, is characterized by a new phenomenon: the structural surplus of private savings in relation to private investment. This is true even in a situation of prosperity and very low interest rates. On the one hand, this excess saving is due to people's increasing inclination to save in light of rising life expectancy, driven by the desire to have sufficient assets in old age. On the other hand, the demand for capital is not increasing to the same extent, so that investment is not keeping pace with the rising desire to save. The resulting gap between the private desire for wealth and private investment can only be closed by increasing public debt. This open access book offers a new, capital-theoretical perspective on the macroeconomic relationship between desired wealth and investment, and it presents new empirical data on private wealth and its composition in the OECD plus China area. The authors arguethat a free economic and social order can only be stabilized if the wealth aspirations of individuals are met under conditions of price stability. This is not possible without substantial net public debt. A new way of thinking about the economy as a whole is required. By way of an in-depth theoretical and empirical analysis, the book demonstrates this new way of thinking and describes the current challenges facing economic policy. It will appeal to economists and students of economics who are interested in macroeconomic theory and its economic policy implications. An impressive, and convincing theoretical dive into the fundamentals behind secular stagnation, with very strong implications for actual debt policy. Public debt may be needed to improve welfare. - Olivier Blanchard, Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and Professor of Economics Emeritus at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Chief Economist at the International Monetary Fund from 2008 to 2015. Saving ...

The Wolf King: Ibn Mardanish and the Construction of Power in al-Andalus (Medieval Societies, Religions, and Cultures) by Abigail Krasner Balbale 5.0 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 5 minutes ago

The Wolf King explores how political power was conceptualized, constructed, and wielded in twelfth-century al-Andalus, focusing on the eventful reign of Muhammad ibn Sad ibn Ahmad ibn Mardan?sh (r. 1147-1172). Celebrated in Castilian and Latin sources as el rey lobo/rex lupus and denigrated by Almohad and later Arabic sources as irreligious and disloyal to fellow Muslims because he fought the Almohads and served as vassal to the Castilians, Ibn Mardan?sh ruled a kingdom that at its peak constituted nearly half of al-Andalus and served as an important buffer between the Almohads and the Christian kingdoms of Castile and Aragon. Through a close examination of contemporary sources across the region, Abigail Krasner Balbale shows that Ibn Mardan?sh's short-lived dynasty was actually an attempt to integrate al-Andalus more closely with the Islamic East -- particularly the Abbasid caliphate. At stake in his battles against the Almohads was the very idea of the caliphate in this period, as well as who could define righteous religious authority. The Wolf King makes effective use of chronicles, chancery documents, poetry, architecture, coinage, and artifacts to uncover how Ibn Mardan?sh adapted language and cultural forms from around the Islamic world to assert and consolidate power -- and then tracks how these strategies, and the memory of Ibn Mardan?sh more generally, influenced expressions of kingship in subsequent periods.

WebRTC, Web Real-Time Communications, is revolutionizing the way web users communicate, both in the consumer and enterprise worlds. WebRTC adds standard APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) and built-in real-time audio and video capabilities and codecs to browsers without a plug-in. With just a few lines of JavaScript, web developers can add high quality peer-to-peer voice, video, and data channel communications to their collaboration, conferencing, telephony, or even gaming site or application. Key topics such as signaling, security and privacy, and NAT traversal with ICE, STUN, and TURN protocols are covered. The third edition has an enhanced demo application which now shows the use of the data channel for real-time text sent directly between browsers. Also, a full description of the browser media negotiation process including actual SDP session descriptions from Firefox and Chrome. Precarious Times: Temporality and History in Modern German Culture (Signale: Modern German Letters, Cultures, and Thought) by Anne Fuchs (Cornell University Press and Cornell University Library) Price verified 8 hours ago

In Precarious Times, Anne Fuchs explores how works of German literature, film, and photography reflect on the profound temporal anxieties precipitated by contemporary experiences of atomization, displacement, and fragmentation that bring about a loss of history and of time itself and that is peculiar to our current moment. The digital age places premiums on just-in-time deliveries, continual innovation, instantaneous connectivity, and around-the-clock availability. While some celebrate this 24/7 culture, others see it as profoundly destructive to the natural rhythm of day and night -- and to human happiness. Have we entered an era of a perpetual present that depletes the future and erodes our grasp of the past? Beginning its examination around 1900, when rapid modernization was accompanied by comparably intense reflection on changing temporal experience, Precarious Times provides historical depth and perspective to current debates on the "digital now." Expanding the modern discourse on time and speed, Fuchs deploys such concepts as attention, slowness and lateness to emphasize the uneven quality of time around the world.

Handbook of Computational Social Science for Policy by Eleonora Bertoni (Springer) 3.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

This open access handbook describes foundational issues, methodological approaches and examples on how to analyse and model data using Computational Social Science (CSS) for policy support. Up to now, CSS studies have mostly developed on a small, proof-of concept, scale that prevented from unleashing its potential to provide systematic impact to the policy cycle, as well as from improving the understanding of societal problems to the definition, assessment, evaluation, and monitoring of policies. The aim of this handbook is to fill this gap by exploring ways to analyse and model data for policy support, and to advocate the adoption of CSS solutions for policy by raising awareness of existing implementations of CSS in policy-relevant fields. To this end, the book explores applications of computational methods and approaches like big data, machine learning, statistical learning, sentiment analysis, text mining, systems modelling, and network analysis to different problems in the social sciences. The book is structured into three Parts: the first chapters on foundational issues open with an exposition and description of key policymaking areas where CSS can provide insights and information. In detail, the chapters cover public policy, governance, data justice and other ethical issues. Part two consists of chapters on methodological aspects dealing with issues such as the modelling of complexity, natural language processing, validity and lack of data, and innovation in official statistics. Finally, Part three describes the application of computational methods, challenges and opportunities in various social science areas, including economics, sociology, demography, migration, climate change, epidemiology, geography, and disaster management. The target audience of the book spans from the scientific community engaged in CSS research to policymakers interested in evidence-informed policy interventions, but also includes private companies holdingdata that can be used to ...

Europeanization in Sweden: Opportunities and Challenges for Civil Society Organizations (Studies on Civil Society Book 10) by Anna Meeuwisse (Berghahn Books) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 minutes ago

Notwithstanding its many successes since 1945, the project of European integration currently faces major difficulties, from financial crises and mass immigration to the departure of the UK from the European Union. At the same time, these challenges have spurred civil society organizations within and across Europe, revealing a shared public sphere in which citizens can mobilize around refugee rights, opposition to austerity policies, and other issues. Europeanization in Sweden assembles new empirical research on how these processes have played out in one of the continent's wealthiest nations, providing insights into whether, and how, the "Swedish model" can guide European integration.

An Academy at the Court of the Tsars: Greek Scholars and Jesuit Education in Early Modern Russia (NIU Series in Slavic, East European, and Eurasian ... by Nikolaos A. Chrissidis 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 6 hours ago

The first formally organized educational institution in Russia was established in 1685 by two Greek hieromonks, Ioannikios and Sophronios Leichoudes. Like many of their Greek contemporaries in the seventeenth century, the brothers acquired part of their schooling in colleges of post-Renaissance Italy under a precise copy of the Jesuit curriculum. When they created a school in Moscow, known as the Slavo-Greco-Latin Academy, they emulated the structural characteristics, pedagogical methods, and program of studies of Jesuit prototypes. In this original work, Nikolaos A. Chrissidis analyzes the academy's impact on Russian educational practice and situates it in the contexts of Russian-Greek cultural relations and increased contact between Russia and Western Europe in the seventeenth century. Chrissidis demonstrates that Greek academic and cultural influences on Russia in the second half of the seventeenth century were Western in character, though Orthodox in doctrinal terms. He also shows that Russian and Greek educational enterprises were part of the larger European pattern of Jesuit academic activities that impacted Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox educational establishments and curricular choices. An Academy at the Court of the Tsars is the first study of the Slavo-Greco-Latin Academy in English and the only one based on primary sources in Russian, Church Slavonic, Greek, and Latin. It will interest scholars and students of early modern Russian and Greek history, of early modern European intellectual history and the history of science, of Jesuit education, and of Eastern Orthodox history and culture.

Incidental Archaeologists: French Officers and the Rediscovery of Roman North Africa by Bonnie Effros 4.4 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

In Incidental Archaeologists, Bonnie Effros examines the archaeological contributions of nineteenth-century French military officers, who, raised on classical accounts of warfare and often trained as cartographers, developed an interest in the Roman remains they encountered when commissioned in the colony of Algeria. By linking the study of the Roman past to French triumphant narratives of the conquest and occupation of the Maghreb, Effros demonstrates how Roman archaeology in the forty years following the conquest of the Ottoman Regencies of Algiers and Constantine in the 1830s helped lay the groundwork for the creation of a new identity for French military and civilian settlers. Effros uses France's violent colonial war, its efforts to document the ancient Roman past, and its brutal treatment of the region's Arab and Berber inhabitants to underline the close entanglement of knowledge production with European imperialism. Significantly, Incidental Archaeologists shows how the French experience in Algeria contributed to the professionalization of archaeology in metropolitan France. Effros demonstrates how the archaeological expeditions undertaken by the French in Algeria and the documentation they collected of ancient Roman military accomplishments reflected French confidence that they would learn from Rome's technological accomplishments and succeed, where the Romans had failed, in mastering the region.

The Logic of Causation is a treatise of formal logic and of aetiology. It is an original and wide-ranging investigation of the definition of causation (deterministic causality) in all its forms, and of the deduction and induction of such forms. The work was carried out in three phases over a dozen years (1998-2010), each phase introducing more sophisticated methods than the previous to solve outstanding problems. This study was intended as part of a larger work on causal logic, which additionally treats volition and allied cause-effect relations (2004).

Revitalizing Collegiality: Restoring Faculty Authority in Universities (Research in the Sociology of Organizations Book 87) by Kerstin Sahlin (Emerald Publishing Limited) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 4 hours ago

The ebook edition of this title is Open Access and freely available to read online. The higher education and research system faces a constant dilemma. On the one hand, research and higher education are run by autonomous, interrelated academic communities, often described as collegial governance. On the other hand, they are an instrument for the fulfillment of goals that are often external to the academic community. What, then, is the role of academics and academic knowledge in governance of higher education and research, and how does this reflect on and impact their aims and overall place in society? Fostered through joint workshops and an open dialogue, this double volume of Research in the Sociology of Organizations develops a deeper understanding of collegiality, examining through a unique comparative perspective how it is translated and practiced in different settings across the world. Considering ways in which collegiality can be revitalized, this second installment argues for reintroducing collegiality both in analyzing the development of higher education systems and research and in the actual governing of universities. Revealing the globalization, homogenization and variation that have come to characterize the collegiate system, Revitalizing Collegiality critically considers the state of and future of the higher education system, and how we can consciously shape it moving forward.

Edward Charles Elliott, Educator (The Founders Series) by Frank K. Burrin (Purdue University Press) Price verified 4 hours ago

A study of the 50-year career of Edward Charles Elliott is a study of the development of American education. Elliott had experience as a high school and college teacher, school system superintendent, state college system chancellor, and president of a Big Ten university, all during a period of change in American attitudes toward public schooling and rapid growth in education institutions. As president of Purdue University from 1922 to 1945, Elliott steered the school through years of expansion in size, prestige, and service. Student enrollment, staff, course offerings, buildings, and campus acreage more than doubled; the total value of the physical plant increased more than five-fold, and the schools of pharmacy, home economics, and graduate study were opened under Elliott's leadership. This book shows not only how Elliott helped make Purdue University what it is today, but documents educational trends from 1900 to 1950 and includes a lengthy bibliography of Elliott's writings to assist the student of higher education.

Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Social Knowledge Sciences and Education (ICSKSE 2022) (Advances in Social Science, Education and ... by Sumarmi Sumarmi Price verified 5 hours ago

This is an open access book. Each country in Southeast Asia has experienced numerous adversities, from pandemic and disasters, to inequalities and threats to democracy. Adding to these challenges, are our common experience of colonialism where its legacies still resonate in the present. Despite these challenges, Southeast Asia continue to participate in global commitments geared towards realizing sustainable development, democracy, and countervailing the imbalance global power relation. Furthermore, Southeast Asia has been the center of studies that critically examined the global power of knowledge production. Categories of 'developing, undeveloped, or third world' have been largely questioned, as these categories created more segregation and reflected Orientalist notion rather than acknowledging countries of Southeast Asia and others as a distinct entity. Under this backdrop, the conference will explore these important questions: what makes Southeast Asia resilient? Why? What brought Southeast Asia together as 'Southeast Asia'? What are the challenges for Southeast Asia today? How do we overcome them? How does Southeast Asia contest and cooperate with global powers within the international network? This conference will bring together academics, educators, activists, or even policy makers who work on Southeast Asia to discuss those questions. Experts within and outside the countries of Southeast Asia are welcome to share their research and knowledge on various issues about the region.
