In Praise of Folly by Desiderius Erasmus 4.3 Stars (187 Reviews)    Price verified 14 hours ago

This sixteenth-century religious satire by a Renaissance critic and theologian is "a masterpiece of humor and wise irony" (Johan Huizinga, Dutch historian). At the onset of his hugely successful satire of medieval European society, Dutch scholar Desiderius Erasmus invokes the goddess Folly, daughter of Youth and Wealth, who was raised by Drunkenness and Ignorance. She's followed by idolatrous companions, including Self-love, Flattery, Pleasure, and Laziness. Through Folly's wry and humorous speech, Erasmus denounces the superstitions and nonsensical eccentricities of his contemporary theologians and churchmen, monastic life, and the condition of the Catholic Church. An immensely influential humanist text, In Praise of Folly helped lay the groundwork for the Protestant Reformation and marked a transitional time between medieval beliefs and modern ideals.

A Year of Terror on the Streets of Phoenix: True Crime Cases of the Serial Street Shooters and the Baseline Killer (Serial Killers Book 11) by Jack Smith 3.9 Stars (64 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

Under the hot sun of Arizona, there is a killer on the loose in the street of Phoenix... Download FREE with Kindle Unlimited! The gunfire in Phoenix, Arizona, began in the late summer of 2005. For the next year, the shots would continue -- along with the robberies, rapes, and assaults. Phoenix realized it had a serial killer on its hands, but it wouldn't take long for investigators to discover the unbelievable truth: There was more than one killer, and they were operating independently of each other. The Baseline Killer targeted mostly women. He assaulted them and raped them at gunpoint. Eventually, he began to kill his victims. Named after Baseline Road, and originally called the Baseline Rapist, Mark Goudeau was their first serial killer. The second one was actually two, and sometimes three, men of mayhem. The Serial Street Shooters drove around shooting people and animals from the window of their car. Samuel Dieteman and Dale Hausner shot anyone who struck their fancy, sometimes multiple people in one night, and sometimes in the same night they would rob stores or light them on fire. Jeff Hausner, Dale's brother, tagged along for some of the first crimes. And then they were all caught, convicted, and given their sentences. One decade later, Phoenix was once again in the crosshairs of a madman as another serial shooter popped up. In fact, another several did. One was a man who drove around and shot people on the sidewalks, in their homes, standing by their cars. He was the Maryvale Serial Shooter, and his name was Aaron Saucedo. While Saucedo spent a year, from the summer of 2015 to the fall of 2016, shooting and killing people, he had some competition during his first active month. A man known as the I-10 Shooter had begun shooting at cars on the highway, although his attacks caused only one injury and no fatalities. Several copycat shooters turned up as well. In this book, we will delve primarily into the Baseline Killer and the ...

Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes (Open Road Media) 4.4 Stars (1,209 Review)    Price verified 11 hours ago

The seventeenth-century work of political philosophy that brought us the concept of the social contract. Considered by many to be as influential and provocative as Machiavelli's The Prince, Thomas Hobbes's Leviathan, written during the English Civil War, argues that only a people united under a strong sovereign can resist the forces of chaos. Exploring such concepts as the state of nature and the need to escape it, the value of a commonwealth, the advantages of a monarchy, and the role of religion in civil society, Leviathan is a controversial and challenging landmark in the history of political thought.

Going Off Globe: Mysterious Disappearances, Faked Deaths, and other Historical Anomalies by Cha Bowman 3.6 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

Perhaps you've heard of people who have gone off the grid. But what about those that have seemingly gone completely off the globe? Jimmy Hoffa for example, is one of the most infamous cases of human disappearance on record. He was a high-profile figure who vanished without a trace. Since his vanishing, there have been countless searches, excavations, and downright manhunts to figure out what happened to him, yet his case is still just as confounding as ever. Unable to find any remains, some have even suggested that perhaps Hoffa faked his own death. Is that possible? If you believe the case of "Brushy Bill," AKA Billy the Kid, you just might entertain the suggestion. Or what about the case of an actress who disappeared without a trace? The gossip columns had whispered with glee that she was having a fling with Kirk Douglas. Kirk denied all such claims. Nevertheless, it was as if this star-crossed starlet had fallen right off the globe. Much the same thing could be said for a whole Malaysian Airlines plane that vanished without a trace. To this day no one knows what exactly happened to MH370. Come along with us as we sift through a whole host of mysterious disappearances, faked deaths, and other historical anomalies.

Our Worst Strength: American Individualism and its Hidden Discontents by James F Richardson 4.9 Stars (10 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

We are all settlers on our own personal frontiers. It's our national way of life. Individualism. America has now taken individualism to its logical extreme like no other society on Earth. And the results are mixed. Radical autonomy without wisdom and lots of social support is a dangerous gift. It can even become a curse of self-destruction. This book explores how individualism affects the five major domains of American life that comprise 80% of our waking time - work, fun, food, friends, and family. Using fresh national research on older Americans' life experiences, his training as a cultural anthropologist, and his own awkward life experiences, Dr. Richardson has crafted a first-of-its-kind social history of the late 20th century and what it yielded to us as a nation. Part One - How to Make a Hyper-Individualistic Society in Seven Easy Steps Part Two - How It Became Awkward at Work Part Three - How We Got Lost in the American Fun-house Part Four - How We Came To Eat Whatever, Whenever Part Five - How We Turned Friends into Entertainment Devices Part Six - How We Shriveled the American Family Part Seven - The Future of Individualism in America Dr. Richardson argues that individualism is not an inevitable way of life. We can take our gifts of autonomy and calibrate them to a more community-oriented future. We have to truly understand what we have before we make changes we would regret as a country.

Pain Perspectives: Finding Meaning in the Fire by Kay Louise Aldred 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

Pain Perspectives is an anthology that tells the stories of women's bodies and their experiences of chronic pain and illness. It also reveals the deep wisdom held within the suffering. The art, writing, and poetry from women around the world showcased in this book offers three clear messages. The first is that women are sick both metaphorically and physically. Lots of women. The second is that it is the patriarchal systems and structures in society are the origin of the sickness. Patriarchy hurts. The third is that the path of Goddess is both the medicine and the cure. Pleasure liberates. Read how Goddess and Goddess spirituality supports women to heal and find their voice, so that others may too. Praise for Pain Perspectives "Once again, Girl God books - and the courageous women who share what has been banished to the shadows, silenced, disparaged, and demonized - is a profoundly valuable gift to everyone who is being called to reintegrate our feminine receptive nature. Pain Perspectives is a beautiful sharing of how the pain of existing in a heart-and-soul deprived patriarchal paradigm has been endured - and has contributed to women's wisdom, gifts, and soul's evolution. A must read for anyone who has lived with pain, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. Pretty much everyone. The women who traveled to the depths, transmuted their pain, garnered the wisdom, and rose to inspire others is an authentic depiction of the energy of the Goddess returning through each and every one of us. I recommend taking your time to receive each story in this book, as deeply as it was shared." -Mary Lane, author of Divine Nourishment & Meena "When first approached to write an endorsement for this book I felt quietly confident. I have been a practitioner of Classical Chinese medicine and somatic therapies for forty years, and pain is my compassion language. I know pain in all its forms both professionally and personally. So, all good, right? But the collection of essays, ...

Do you know "Majestic 12"? A secret group nestled deep within the United States government that has acquired massive influence through their ownership of what has been claimed to be the biggest secret in human history! Download FREE with Kindle Unlimited! For years there have been rumors of a top-secret group of paranormal power brokers behind the scenes of the UFO phenomenon. This shadowy group is in deep not only with UFOs -- but more specifically their occupants. Documents were dumped on a couple of UFO researchers in the 1980s that told a startling story: aliens were not only real but that a secret governmental cabal had been convened to work as their intermediaries. Ever since these thought-provoking allegations have been made, the UFO community has been split right down the middle as to what should be believed. Some view the story of the Majestic 12 as a hoax, while others have become true believers. There is also a smaller but vocal minority out there who believes that the Majestic 12 mystery is somehow a combination of both. They contend that perhaps for unknown reasons, a bit of myth and reality have been mixed together. This is done maybe as a kind of trial balloon, to float some real details of the UFO phenomenon, while also mixing it with just enough bogus material to throw UFO investigators off track. This book does not make any definitive conclusion on which of these three options are most valid. But we do explore them all. Read on your favorite devices such as Kindle, iPhone, iPad, Android cellular phone, tablet, laptop, computer with Amazon's free Kindle App. Scroll back up and click the BUY NOW button at the top right side of this page for an immediate download!

Imelda: Steel Butterfly of the Philippines by Katherine Ellison 4.0 Stars (9 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Imelda Marcos - famous for her 1,060 pairs of shoes - was also one of the most powerful and controversial figures in world history. She was extraordinarily beautiful, charismatic, determined - and savage. "Imelda: Steel Butterfly of the Philippines," a uniquely unauthorized biography by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Katherine Ellison, describes the Philippine first lady's rise from near-poverty to unimaginable riches, her surprisingly tenacious attempt to take over as dictator, and her fatal grudge match with her chief political rival, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino. "The research here is superb, the writing is gripping and graceful." -The Washington Post After helping reveal Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos' multi-billion-dollar corruption in a Pulitzer-prize-winning newspaper series, Ellison returned to the Philippines, New York City, and Washington, D.C. to interview scores of Imelda's relatives, friends, bodyguards, "Blue Ladies," political rivals and allies, as well as every U.S. Ambassador to serve in Manila during the Marcos' 1965-1986 regime. Acclaimed by The Washington Post for its exceptional research and compelling writing, Ellison's book chronicles Imelda's journey from her modest upbringing on the island of Leyte to her powerful role beside her husband, who called her his "secret weapon." Fueled by fortunes in US aid, and for years extolled by US media, which compared the Marcoses to the Kennedys' "Camelot," the Philippines' "conjugal dictatorship" soon devolved into unrivaled extravagance, corruption, and harrowing human rights abuses. Delving into the intricacies of the Manila-Washington dynamics in the context of one of history's weirdest-ever binational relationships, Ellison also explores Imelda's voracious pursuit of US real estate, including the acquisition of New York's Crown Building; her meetings with Muammar Qadafy, Yuri Andropov, Fidel Castro and Madame Mao, and her attendance at such fabulous events as Iran's 2,500th-anniversary festival and ...

GUN TALK by Thomas H. Ward (Transcendent Publishing) 4.3 Stars (26 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

Free for Kindle Unlimited5 STAR REVIEWS There is something in this book for everyone. The Second Amendment is a lot more than words on a piece of paper. It is a type of thinking. It is a rational judgment made by free men that started long ago, before this country was founded. It came into full meaning at the battles of Concord and Lexington. The King ordered all guns to be collected. Guns were necessary tools for hunting and security and still are to this day. This is what started the Revolutionary War for freedom. This is why we have the 2nd Amendment. This is why it is important, because without it our country could become a dictatorship or worse. Greedy men will always seek power, fame, and riches at the expense of the common citizen. It was July 2nd as I was writing this book. I took a break to watch the American Revolution on TV, unfold in front of me, and I was spell bound. Then something occurred to me. The first battles were at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts. I wondered, who were these brave men, a militia of 400 that stood against the Kings Army, the most feared force on earth at the time. I wondered who were these new American Patriots? Who were these heroes that dared to defy the orders King George and risked their lives in doing so? They were nobody and they were everybody, from the farms and small towns of the new America. They were the everyday people: farmers, shop keepers, blacksmiths, and ministers... they were Americans like us.

China: The Untold Stories by Tony Pow Price verified 12 hours ago

China has been illustrated as a devil by our media. There are more myths than truths. This book debunks the myths, and let the reader decide whether they are myths or truths. I have updated a few of my articles and presented in this book. I hope the US would choose the right rights to treat China fairly. It is important not to lead us to a military war with China that would end up a nuclear war. I am a Chinese American and I have not paid by the Chinese government. I am optimist on our country, the USA. My wish is to co-prosperous with China and at least our actions would not hurt us. The Biblical Case for Private Gun Ownership (God and Government) by Gordan Runyan 4.5 Stars (22 Reviews)    Price verified 15 hours ago

10 page article. American culture is buzzing with heated debates on the Second Amendment, gun control, and the rights of individual citizens to use firearms to defend themselves. As Christian citizens hear those arguments and participate in them, it ought to be our priority to follow the principles of Scripture, rather than the opinions of man. This article from pastor Gordan Runyan is meant to arm you with the principles of the Word of God. If your right to defend yourself and your family is a right that comes from God, then no man and no government has the right to take that from you. What does the Scripture say? Is there a Bible verse that teaches a Second Amendment-style right to arms? Should believers even own guns, given all the current heat in the culture over them? Does the Bible teach a right to self-defense? This short study on the right of free people to fight for themselves and their homes will answer your questions.

Sitting Bull: A Life from Beginning to End (Native American History) by Hourly History 4.3 Stars (406 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Discover the remarkable life of Sitting Bull... Free BONUS Inside! A prominent Lakota Sioux chief and medicine man, Sitting Bull was both a man of peace and a man of war as he sought to simultaneously fight and negotiate on behalf of his people during the westward expansion of the United States. It was his visions that inspired and led the Native American warriors to victory in the legendary Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. This triumph would, however, be short-lived, and Sitting Bull and his loyal band of followers would be forced to surrender their freedom only five years later. Sitting Bull led the Sioux Nation through some of their most turbulent times as they faced the loss of their ancestral lands and were forced to move to reservations -- reservations which steadily decreased in size according to the whims of the U.S. government and the discovery of new gold deposits. His death on the Standing Rock Reservation at the hands of Indian Agents in 1890 would help to spark one final uprising on the part of the Lakota Sioux, one that would culminate in the tragic massacre at Wounded Knee. Sitting Bull was one of the most important figures in the history of the Native Americans and their struggle against the government of the United States. This book reveals his incredible life and legacy in full. Discover a plethora of topics such as • The Death of His Father • General Sully's Campaign • The Great Sioux War Begins • Battle of the Little Bighorn: Custer's Last Stand • Life on the Run • Late Life and Death • And much more! The Road to Gomorrah: Britain's War 1939-1943 by Kenneth Duthie 4.4 Stars (22 Reviews)    Price verified 13 minutes ago

The Road to Gomorrah analyses some of the difficult decisions that Churchill had to make during the second world war. Churchill understood that Britain needed allies to prevail in a long war against Germany, so after Operation Barbarossa was launched in June 1941, Churchill aligned Britain with the Soviet Union. Until the Allies were ready to launch an invasion on the European mainland, Churchill had to do everything he could to make sure the Soviets kept fighting on the Eastern Front. The American government played their part by turning the United States into the "arsenal of democracy." After Harry Hopkins met with Stalin in July 1941, the Americans sent vast amounts of materiel to the Soviets via the Arctic Convoys. When Churchill visited Moscow in August 1942, he told Stalin that he intended to use Bomber Command to attack Germany's cities. The British were already committed to an area bombing campaign against Germany. On the evening of 24th July 1943, almost eight hundred heavy bombers took to the skies and headed east, across the North Sea. The Royal Air Force and the USAAF were working together to hit the Germans around the clock. American "Flying Fortess" bombers equipped with the Norden bombsight would continue the attack the next day. For the first time, the British bombers were carrying anti-radar technology that would neutralise the German defences. The destructive power of Bomber Command was about to be unleashed on the city of Hamburg. Operation Gomorrah was under way...

EL PARAÍSO ESTÁ BAJO LOS PIES DE LOS GOBIERNOS: DIRIGIENDO LAS NACIONES CON MAQASID (Spanish Edition) by Abdellatif Raji (Yaraak, LLC.) Price verified 7 hours ago

Hating Men: A Book of Revelations by Steffy Sota (Numeracy Press) Price verified 3 hours ago

Patriarchy is a society manufactured and controlled by males--The Fatherland. A society in which every legitimate institution is entirely in the hands of males and a few selected henchwomen. A society that is characterized by oppression, repression, depression, narcissism, cruelty, racism, classism, ageism, speciesism, objectification, sadomasochism, necrophilia, and the rest -- a joyless society ruled by the Godfather, the Son, and Unholy Ghost; a society fixated on proliferation, purgation, and perversion -- bent on the ultimate destruction of all life. Ours is an anti-female society -- a misogynistic "civilization" in which men collectively victimize women attacking us as a personification of men's own paranoid fears, as The Enemy. Within our society it is men who rape, who sap women's energy, and who deny women economic and political power. I hate them.

Neither Brussels nor Washington: Arguments for a British Foreign Policy (Libertarian Analysis Book 5) by Sean Gabb (Hampden Press) 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

"The British Government is little more than a branch of the Pentagon" So argues Sean Gabb in this controversial and stimulating book. He calls for a British foreign policy that is completely independent of both the European Union and the United States. He believes in particular that the British reliance, since 1940, on American support is both humiliating and dangerous. It has been one of the main causes for the growth of a police state, and has involved his country in a series of disastrous wars in the Islamic world. While aware of the challenges presented by European Integration, Gabb argues that the American Empire is an "existential threat" to Britain, and hopes for the decline and fall of that empire. Speaking for the world in general, he says: "We need to look forward to a world of renewed diversity, in which hundreds -- or perhaps thousands -- of nation states and other groupings can work out their destiny in ways consistent with their moral capacity and historic circumstances. This is not possible when American-backed death squads and remote control weapons of murder can be sent anywhere at the press of a button." This book is an open challenge to anyone who believes in a "special relationship" between Britain and America, or that American power is a force for good in international affairs. India-China Ladakh Standoff: The Diversion Power-Play between the Dragon and the Elephant by Anirudh Phadke 3.6 Stars (43 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

From the period of the British Raj, the border issues between both the present Asian big powers existed. The Simla Convention put forth by Henry McMohan failed to formulate a definitive border between India, China, and Tibet. It ultimately leads to the Chinese annexation of Tibet. Thus from the year, 1950 the Chinese started executing massive Salami Slicing strategy to achieve their cartographic expansion goals. In the present-day scenario, the border has become a trump card for the Chinese to gain an upper hand against India whenever it tries to achieve an objective that has India's national interest merged in it. This paper analyses the current Ladakh Standoff including the Galwan Valley face off that occurred during the de-escalation process on 15th June 2020. Both the Indian and Chinese perspective are argued with proper facts and figures. As a bonus part satellites images of the Galwan Valley is discussed with proper explanation. Note: This is not a lengthy e-book that covers the whole issue of Ladakh Standoff from the past till present. Instead this is a mere analysis of what, why, and how did the Standoff occurred. This is a more of kind of an Issue Brief. The opinions and views expressed are those of the author.

American Epoch: and the indoctrination of America's youth by Charles Henry Vessey 1.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 8 hours ago

American Epoch is an adventure into American exceptionalism. How did America become an exceptional nation? What makes America different from the other nations in the world? Why do people flock to the United States when given the opportunity? If America is such a great place, why are people with nefarious motives attempting to transform this country? Who are these people and what are their ultimate objectives? These and so many other questions are answered between the covers of this book. This book commences with a shocking expose of the anti-American propaganda being taught in America's classrooms. We have witnessed the result of the indoctrination occurring in American classrooms through the actions of professional athletes who kneel for the playing of the national anthem. Regretfully, this is but a symptom of a larger problem for America. Recent polls have recorded results showing huge percentages of millennials believe that socialism or communism are preferred economic systems to capitalism. Similar numbers of millennials think free speech should not be available to those with whom they disagree. These ideas are the results of public education and should shock everyone who reads this book. The book segues into America exceptionalism. American Epoch presents empirical evidence of American exceptionalism and its roots in the freedom and liberty enshrined in the founding documents of this country. American Epoch demonstrates how America was in the vanguard of eliminating slavery and providing women's suffrage. The book investigates why the United States leads the world in so many aspects of society, however, the story does not end with America leading the world in so many categories of life. The United States has sacrificed both blood and treasure for freedom and liberty throughout the world. These topics are ignored in the world of academia. Abraham Lincoln said the following in his speech at the Young Men's Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois on January 27, ...

The Role of the University in a Dysfunctional Society: A Book of Revelations by Steffy Sota Price verified 7 hours ago

I am a ghost writer. In life, I had one of the greatest reputations in the academic world. This thought made me retch. Fame is the thing I had most wanted from childhood; and after I got it, I had no understanding whatsoever of its basis -- why people responded to what I said. I felt only disgust with my public "noble" character. I did not consider myself a scholar: I knew no languages except English, and I didn't see the point of a systematic study of literature. I did not consider myself a critic, either, and I was surprised whenever I heard myself referred to as one. I hated Hudson; I disliked most of my colleagues; I disliked teaching graduate students. After a routine disagreement over the merits of a dissertation, I refused to teach in the Graduate School again. I was frequently depressed, I had writer's block, and I drank too much. I did not even like my first name. I wished that I had been called Quentin or Dick. I held myself a discreet distance from any group with which I might be too quickly identified -- professors, critics, liberals, curmudgeons, writers. I was all of those things, of course; I could not deny it. But I resented being understood under the auspices of anything so insufficiently nuanced as a rubric. I wanted to feel superior without betraying to others my sense of low self esteem. A lot of psychic energy went into the care and maintenance of my persona. It was the price I paid for a life of the mind. I think of my intellectual life as a struggle, not energetic enough, against all the blindnesses and malign obfuscations of the academic world. For me, a liberal is a person who believes that the right economic system, the right political reforms, the right undergraduate curriculum, and the right psychotherapy will do away with unfairness, snobbery, resentment, prejudice, neurosis, and tragedy. People's political opinions may be rigid; but they are not necessarily rigorous. Political opinions tend to float up out of some mixture of sentiment, ...

Why did I write this book? Because sometimes things need to be said and sadly in this world we live in today, we are being silenced. In this book, I get into the Plandemic. This idea that we had to shut down our entire world for a 99.75% recovery rate. We get into racism in America and why the media is fuelling the rage. We also discuss why the government is bribing Americans in to socialism through stimulus and tax incentives. These are scary times and we must take America back before it's too late.

By taking the reader through the offices in charge of the Afghan refugee crisis during the 2000s, in Geneva and in Kabul, the book shows the internal functioning of this international organization. It provides analysis of Afghan refugee policies from an original position, with the author being both agency official and anthropologist, and articulates multiple levels of analysis: the micropolitics of practices as much as the institution and the multi-scalar power relations that shape its environment.

The Distinction of Peace: A Social Analysis of Peacebuilding (Configurations: Critical Studies Of World Politics) by Catherine Goetze 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 15 hours ago

"Peacebuilding" serves as a catch-all term to describe efforts by an array of international organizations, nongovernmental organizations, and agencies of foreign states to restore or construct a peaceful society in the wake -- or even in the midst -- of conflict. Despite this variety, practitioners consider themselves members of a global profession. In The Distinction of Peace, Catherine Goetze investigates the genesis of peacebuilding as a professional field of expertise since the 1960s, its increasing influence, and the ways it reflects global power structures. Goetze describes how the peacebuilding field came into being, how it defines who belongs to it and who does not, and what kind of group culture it has generated. Using an innovative methodology, she investigates the motivations of individuals who become peacebuilders, their professional trajectories and networks, and the "good peacebuilder" as an ideal. For many, working in peacebuilding in various ways -- as an aid worker on the ground, as a lawyer at the United Nations, or as an academic in a think tank -- has become not merely a livelihood, but also a form of participation in world politics. As a field, peacebuilding has developed techniques for incorporating and training new members, yet its internal politics also create the conditions of exclusion that often result in practical failures of the peacebuilding enterprise. By providing a critical account of the social mechanisms that make up the peacebuilding field, Goetze offers deep insights into the workings of Western domination and global inequalities.

Governable Spaces: Democratic Design for Online Life by Nathan Schneider (University of California Press) 4.4 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. When was the last time you participated in an election for an online group chat or sat on a jury for a dispute about a controversial post? Platforms nudge users to tolerate nearly all-powerful admins, moderators, and "benevolent dictators for life." In Governable Spaces, Nathan Schneider argues that the internet has been plagued by a phenomenon he calls "implicit feudalism": a bias, both cultural and technical, for building communities as fiefdoms. The consequences of this arrangement matter far beyond online spaces themselves, as feudal defaults train us to give up on our communities' democratic potential, inclining us to be more tolerant of autocratic tech CEOs and authoritarian tendencies among politicians. But online spaces could be sites of a creative, radical, and democratic renaissance. Using media archaeology, political theory, and participant observation, Schneider shows how the internet can learn from governance legacies of the past to become a more democratic medium, responsive and inventive unlike anything that has come before.

Sociological Thinking in Contemporary Organizational Scholarship (Research in the Sociology of Organizations Book 90) by Stewart Clegg (Emerald Publishing Limited) Price verified 8 hours ago

The ebook edition of this title is Open Access and freely available to read online. Though organizational scholarship traces its intellectual lineage from a diversity of sources, there is little doubt that in recent years a key divide has emerged amongst organization scholars and sociologists. For many, if not most, it has become unclear what role sociology is supposed to play in organization studies. Against this backdrop, the editors of Sociological Thinking in Contemporary Organizational Scholarship ask: what is "organizational sociology" today? This pathbreaking volume explores the new boundaries of organizational sociology to identify, discuss and challenge sociology's genuine contribution to organization studies. Mapping a community of scholars that transcends disciplinary limitations, chapters follow one simple epistemic logic: society happens in, between, across and around organizations. Breathing fresh life into a once lively dialogue on the social nature, characteristics and consequences of the field, this is a valuable resource for navigating of the varied sociological scholarship we witness amongst today's organization scholars.

Journey to Axiom by Saeed Aslam 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

As a five year old boy, I witnessed the horrors of war first hand during the 1965 war between India and Pakistan. Because my father was assigned to the Headquarters of Pakistan army, we lived on the base and faced relentless air attacks from the Indian air force. Seeing the devastation and death caused by war made me develop a deep rooted hatred for Indians. I wanted to grow up and join the Pakistani army and kill as many Indians as I could. Fate would have it that I never joined the military and ended up coming to the US for higher education instead. When I arrived in America, I met a Sikh from India named Kulbir Singh who did everything possible to be my friend, while I did my best to not like him due to the hatred I had in my heart towards Indians. But Kulbir made it impossible for me to hate him because he was such a wonderful person; so selfless, loving and a true friend. I was forced to reevaluate my feelings towards the Indians and I realized that our military was killing them at the same time they were killing us. I understood how wrong I was in my hatred and how this man's unconditional love as a friend forced me to see the light. I consider him one of my best friends until this day and he taught me such wonderful lessons in life; not only in the futility of hatred, but also the power of unconditional love. Now if the whole world can somehow see each other with a burning love for humanity, we will be able to end wars and bring peace to mankind.

Theorising Justice: A Primer for Social Scientists by Johanna Ohlsson (Bristol University Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 11 hours ago

Available Open Access digitally under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. Bringing together divergent approaches to justice theorising, this volume connects normative and philosophical theories with the more empirically focused approaches emerging today in the social and political sciences and policy scholarship. The chapters overview a variety of mainstream approaches and radical critiques of justice to illustrate their value in addressing the pressing problems of climate change and economic development. Stressing the value of assessing justice theories in light of the material conditions of our changing world, the book concludes with an in-depth synthesis of how these wide ranging approaches to justice will be useful for students, scholars and practitioners concerned with realising justice.

Pandemicide by David J. Bookbinder 3.9 Stars (27 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

What if the Trump administration's mishandling of the pandemic was not indifferent, incompetent, chaotic, or any of the other explanations offered by mainstream media? What if, instead, everything went according to plan? In this urgent analysis of the U.S. pandemic response, Bookbinder, a psychotherapist, uses the tools of his trade not to diagnose Trump, but to expose the motivations behind his administration's catastrophic handling of the pandemic. Bookbinder builds the case, brick by brick, that Trump & Company intentionally encouraged the virus' spread so that the people who are still dying disproportionately from COVID-19 - Blacks, Latinxs, Indigenous people, and the elderly, sick, and imprisoned - would continue to die. He calls it pandemicide. Using these same therapist tools, Bookbinder goes on to show how pandemicide fits into Trumpism's larger agenda: To move from nascent fascism to a fully realized Fascism 2.0. The essay ends with a call to action around what we need to do, now, to return our nation to sanity. Though many alarm bells have rung over the past four years, and they now ring with deafening volume, they have not been heeded because many Americans don't feel personally threatened. But this is personal. Trumpism is killing us. And so far, everything is going according to plan. It is late in the game, but the good news is that we can still stop the juggernaut that will be unleashed if Trumpism & Company have four more years. There is no more important task before us - no distraction, no entertainment, no project, no job, no creative endeavor, no family matter, nothing - than preventing our descent into a new Dark Age. Let us not look back on this pivotal moment as the time where our troubles began.

Water and Politics: Clientelism and Reform in Urban Mexico by Veronica Herrera 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 11 hours ago

Most of the world's population lives in cities in developing countries, where access to basic public services, such as water, electricity, and health clinics, is either inadequate or sorely missing. Water and Politics shows how politicians benefit politically from manipulating public service provision for electoral gain. In many young democracies, politicians exchange water service for votes or political support, rewarding allies or punishing political enemies. Surprisingly, the political problem of water provision has become more pronounced, as water service represents a valuable political currency in resource-scarce environments. Water and Politics finds that middle-class and industrial elites play an important role in generating pressure for public service reforms.

Environmental Knowledge, Race, and African American Literature (Literatures, Cultures, and the Environment) by Matthias Klestil (Palgrave Macmillan) 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 9 hours ago

This open access book suggests new ways of reading nineteenth-century African American literature environmentally. Combining insights from ecocriticism, African American studies, and Foucauldian theory, Matthias Klestil examines forms of environmental knowledge in African American writing ranging from antebellum slave narratives and pamphlets to Charlotte Forten's journals, Booker T. Washington's autobiographies, and Charles W. Chesnutt's short fiction. The volume highlights how literary forms of environmental knowledge in the African American tradition were shaped by the histories of slavery and race, mainstream environmental writing traditions, and African American forms of expression and intertextuality. Turning to the Underground Railroad, debates over education and home-building, and the aesthetics of the pastoral and the georgic, Environmental Knowledge, Race, and African American Literature provides an original perspective on the African American ecoliterary traditionthat uncovers new facets of canonical and understudied texts and offers new directions for ecocriticism and African American studies.

The Italian Diaspora in South Africa: Nostalgia, Identity, and Belonging in the Second and Third Generations (Routledge Studies in Development, ... by Maria Chiara Marchetti-Mercer (Routledge) 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 5 hours ago

This book investigates the experiences of second- and third-generation Italians living in South Africa, exploring how nostalgia for Italy influences their sense of identity and belonging. The Italian community in South Africa is a unique diaspora, with a complex history, including roots in Italian colonial activities in Africa, and in World War II. This book looks at how the descendants of these early migrants take pride in being Italian and value the Italian language. They also ascribe much importance to their family roots, and have often created a romanticized image of Italy, mostly based on childhood vacation visits. The longing for an imaginary idealized version of Italy is closely linked to their wider search for a sense of identity and belonging against the backdrop of South African society, currently still grappling with its own multicultural identity. Interdisciplinary by design, this book draws on insights from both cultural studies and psychology in order to shine a light on an important and under-studied diasporic community. The book will be of interest to scholars from across migration studies and the Humanities in general. Creation vs. Evolution - The Vedic Perspective by Vimal Sehgal B.Tech IIT Delhi 3.6 Stars (32 Reviews)    Price verified 15 hours ago

Topics are: What is Life? - Life vs. Matter Proof of God's existence Evolution Evolution of consciousness Moral implications In this book I have given the Vedic theory of Life which incorporates consciousness as the primary characteristic of life. I have given a scientific analysis of what life is and described the characteristics of both Life and Matter and their points of similarity and distinction. I have discussed evolution and then described an alternate theory namely the Vedic theory of evolution of consciousness as opposed to Darwin's theory of evolution of species. The theory of evolution of consciousness is based on creation of various species by God so as to accommodate the varied desires of an infinite number of living beings. The Vedic theory of evolution of consciousness marks the dawning of a new era in which consciousness will come to be incorporated as an essential item in our scientific theories about life and its origin. What is Life? What are the characteristics of life? Is life an evolved form of matter or is it distinct from matter? Is life simply a product of or combination of material elements? Is it possible for material elements that have no life at all to combine to give rise to life? How can matter which is devoid of consciousness give rise to life which is conscious? The effect must exist in the cause as well. These are some pertinent questions to ask when we analyse what life is. These questions are the basis of a scientific analysis of life and the debate: creation vs. evolution. The theory of evolution implies a denial of God. It is based on chance and necessity and not on the use of intelligence whereas we can see from our everyday experience that we create everything by the use of our intelligence. Therefore I have given proof of God so as to establish that God exists and He is the creator because His supreme intelligence and mystic power is required for the intelligent design of various species and the universe. Without ...

West African Agriculture and Climate Change by Abdulai Jalloh (International Food Policy Research Institute) 4.7 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

The first of three books in IFPRI's climate change in Africa series, West African Agriculture and Climate Change: A Comprehensive Analysis examines the food security threats facing 11 of the countries that make up West Africa -- Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo -- and explores how climate change will increase the efforts needed to achieve sustainable food security throughout the region. West Africa's population is expected to grow at least through mid-century. The region will also see income growth. Both will put increased pressure on the natural resources needed to produce food, and climate change makes the challenges greater. West Africa is already experiencing rising temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and increasing extreme events. Without attention to adaptation, the poor will suffer. Through the use of hundreds of scenario maps, models, figures, and detailed analysis, the editors and contributors of West African Agriculture and Climate Change present plausible future scenarios that combine economic and biophysical characteristics to explore the possible consequences for agriculture, food security, and resources management to 2050. They also offer recommendations to national governments and regional economic agencies already dealing with the vulnerabilities of climate change and deviations in environment. Decisionmakers and researchers will find West African Agriculture and Climate Change a vital tool for shaping policy and studying the various and likely consequences of climate change.

Yield Gaps and Potential Agricultural Growth in West and Central Africa by Jordan Chamerlin (International Food Policy Research Institute) Price verified 13 hours ago

The authors identify a set of development priorities for agriculture that cut across West Africa at both the country and regional levels to achieve economywide growth goals in the region. To do this we adopt a modeling and analytical framework that involves the integration of spatial analysis to identify yield gaps determining the growth potential of different agricultural activities for areas with similar conditions and an economywide multimarket model to simulate ex ante the economic effects of closing these yield gaps. Results indicate that the greatest agriculture-led growth opportunities in West Africa reside in staple crops (cereals and roots and tubers) and livestock production. Contributing the most to agricultural growth in the Sahel are livestock, rice, coarse grains, and oilseeds (groundnuts); in Coastal countries, staple crops such as cassava, yams, and cereal seems to be relatively more important than other subsectors; and in Central Africa livestock and root crops are the sources of growth with highest potential. Results also point toward an essential range of policies and investments that are needed to stimulate the productivity growth of prioritized activities. These include developing opportunities for regional cooperation on technology adaptation and diffusion, strengthening regional agricultural markets, exploiting opportunities for greater regional cooperation and harmonization, diversifying traditional markets, and enhancing linkages between agricultural and nonagricultural sectors.

Atlas of African Agriculture Research & Development: Revealing agriculture's place in Africa by Kate Sebastian (International Food Policy Research Institute) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 15 hours ago

The work of agricultural researchers and development workers in Africa has the potential to significantly improve the lives of the poor. But that potential can only be realized with easy access to high-quality data and information. The Atlas of African Agriculture Research & Development highlights the ubiquitous role of smallholder agriculture in Africa; the many factors shaping the location, nature, and performance of agricultural enterprises; and the strong interdependencies among farming, natural-resource stocks and flows, and the well-being of the poor. Organized around 7 themes, the atlas covers more than 30 topics, each providing mapped geospatial data and supporting text that answers four fundamental questions: What is this map telling us? Why is this important? What about the underlying data? Where can I learn more? The atlas is part of a wide-ranging eAtlas initiative that will showcase, through print and online resources, a variety of spatial data and tools generated and maintained by a community of research scientists, development analysts, and practitioners working in and for Africa. The initiative will serve as a guide, with references and links to online resources to introduce readers to a wealth of data that can inform efforts to improve the livelihoods of Africa's rural poor. Partisan Rhetoric and Polarization: The Year in C-SPAN Archives Research, Volume 10 by Robert X. Browning Price verified 14 hours ago

Partisan Rhetoric and Polarization: The Year in C-SPAN Archives Research, Volume 10 features chapters written from a variety of perspectives that address divisions in American politics. The topics range widely, including TikTok, abortion, the middle class, the January 6 riot, and partisan rhetoric in Congress. The unifying theme of the volume is that each author uses C-SPAN videos to examine how members of Congress and other elites speak and act on these issues. Two other thoughtful pieces examine Supreme Court justices speaking off the bench and emotional reactions in presidential debates. Partisan Rhetoric and Polarization provides context to understand how the partisan split in American politics is reflected and evidenced in even the highest political institutions: Congress, the presidency, and the Supreme Court.

Silent Hill: The Terror Engine (Landmark Video Games) by Bernard Perron (University of Michigan Press) 4.3 Stars (130 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

Silent Hill: The Terror Engine, the second of the two inaugural studies in the Landmark Video Games series from series editors Mark J. P. Wolf and Bernard Perron, is both a close analysis of the first three Silent Hill games and a general look at the whole series. Silent Hill, with its first title released in 1999, is one of the most influential of the horror video game series. Perron situates the games within the survival horror genre, both by looking at the history of the genre and by comparing Silent Hill with such important forerunners as Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil. Taking a transmedia approach and underlining the designer's cinematic and literary influences, he uses the narrative structure; the techniques of imagery, sound, and music employed; the game mechanics; and the fiction, artifact, and gameplay emotions elicited by the games to explore the specific fears survival horror games are designed to provoke and how the experience as a whole has made the Silent Hill series one of the major landmarks of video game history.

Not Another Average Guy: An Exemplar For The Modern Man by A.P. Hovsepian 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 11 hours ago

Every boy needs a strong male figure in their life. Especially in the formative years. And yet, it's no secret that most of us were deprived of this very thing. No one was there to guide, shape and mold us into men. Our fathers may have been around, but few took it upon themselves to teach us what it meant to be a man. As a result, we've all suffered -- both directly and indirectly -- a great deal of unnecessary pain and frustration in adulthood; where life demanded the price of ignorance be paid (with interest!) While time travel is not a viable solution (yet), the next best thing is to learn these lessons now. Not Another Average Guy is an amalgamation of decades of wisdom, forged by trial and error in the midst of life's most difficult struggles; Struggles one too many men had to personally endure. It offers a gift most males crave from a young age: the gift of direction.

Desistance and Children: Critical Reflections from Theory, Research and Practice by Alexandra Wigzell Price verified 10 hours ago

Available open access digitally under CC BY-NC-ND licence. 'Desistance' - understanding how people move away from offending - has become a significant policy focus in recent years, with desistance thinking transplanted from the adult to the youth justice system in England and Wales. This book is the first to critique this approach to justice-involved children, many of whom are yet to fully develop an identity (criminal or otherwise) from which to 'desist'. Featuring voices from academia, policy and practice, this book explores practical approaches to desistance with children in the 'Child First' context. It gives new insights into how children can be supported to move away from offending and proposes reforms to make a meaningful difference to children's lives.

Race for Citizenship: Black Orientalism and Asian Uplift from Pre-Emancipation to Neoliberal America (Nation of Nations Book 23) by Helen Heran Jun (NYU Press) 3.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

Helen Heran Jun explores how the history of U.S. citizenshiphas positioned Asian Americans and African Americans in interlocking socio-political relationships since the mid nineteenth century. Rejecting the conventional emphasis on 'inter-racial prejudice,' Jun demonstrates how a politics of inclusion has constituted a racial Other within Asian American and African American discourses of national identity. Race for Citizenship examines three salient moments when African American and Asian American citizenship become acutely visible as related crises: the 'Negro Problem' and the 'Yellow Question' in the mid- to late 19th century; World War II-era questions around race, loyalty, and national identity in the context of internment and Jim Crow segregation; and post-Civil Rights discourses of disenfranchisement and national belonging under globalization. Taking up a range of cultural texts -- the 19th century black press, the writings of black feminist Anna Julia Cooper, Asian American novels, African American and Asian American commercial film and documentary -- Jun does not seek to document signs of cross-racial identification, but instead demonstrates how the logic of citizenship compels racialized subjects to produce developmental narratives of inclusion in the effort to achieve political, economic, and social incorporation. Race for Citizenship provides a new model of comparative race studies by situating contemporary questions of differential racial formations within a long genealogy of anti-racist discourse constrained by liberal notions of inclusion.

Reclaiming Socialism, or: Economic Democracy (Recovering a Stolen Word) by Brian Rush 3.9 Stars (37 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

Imagine getting up in the morning and going to work for a company that, just by virtue of the fact that you work for it, you own part of. Imagine that the company's president and other officers have to stand for election every year or two years, and you and all the other employees of the company vote them in or out. Imagine getting an accounting on a quarterly basis of the company's profitability and receiving a payout of your share of those profits - your due as a worker-owner. Imagine that you get tired of working for the company you own part of and decide to strike out on your own. Imagine that there are on-line services readily available where your skills demand high pay from independent clients, so that being self-employed and entirely your own boss is a matter only of doing the work. Or let's say that you and a number of friends have an idea for a new business. Imagine a non-profit organization or perhaps a government agency set up just for that purpose, ready to provide you and your friends a low-interest loan, free advice, and lots of other assistance so you can do that - as long as your new business is a workers' cooperative. Imagine a world in which nobody is obscenely rich and nobody is poor, and the average person makes about double - maybe triple - what most people make today. I can imagine that easily enough. Can you? Would you like to live in a world like that? I sure would. We're ready for it. We just have to believe it and reach for it, and reclaim the word that stands for it. That word is "socialism." It's being misused today to describe something it's not, a world of giant bureaucracies, stagnant economies, and secret police. That's not what it means. It means a world in which ordinary people - probably people like you - own the businesses that provide your livelihood, instead of the economy being owned by a few hogs on Wall Street who see you as their peon. That's what socialism is about. It's about finally freeing ourselves from the ...

Liberalism and Mass Shootings (A Christian Response to America’s Mental Health Crisis) by Roger Ball 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 11 hours ago

Are today's young people being psychologically conditioned to violence, sexual perversion, and suicidal hopelessness? Will mass shootings continue? Is the rise in same-sex attraction a closely related problem? Will violence continue to increase? Will deaths of despair continue to rise? Will America destroy itself from within? REVISED AND EDITED: America is now facing the worst psychological crisis in its history. What has changed over the past fifty-plus years that would produce such an outcome? How long will mass shootings (and school shootings) continue? Why do so many young people struggle with murderous and suicidal impulses (not to mention depression, anxiety, and same-sex attraction)? "I want to show how the problem of mass shootings, and America's mental health crisis in general, can be attributed to three primary causes: 1) the psychological effects of today's passive childrearing practices (producing low self-worth, insecurity, depression, self-doubt, anger, envious resentment, self-loathing, entitlement, loneliness, vindictive behavior, and same-sex attraction). Kids today are hurting on a much deeper level than anything seen in recent generations. They are also more unbridled than ever and likely to act upon distorted emotional urges and impulses. 2) the breakdown of the traditional family structure which produces these same psychological effects only worse. This has been accomplished primarily by extending sexual permissiveness throughout society, which has produced countless fatherless and dysfunctional homes. The majority of mass shooters and other violent offenders come from these environments. 3) the uncivilized means by which we bring about change in society (radical politics). This third element is what brings it all together. It is also a product of the first two. As most are aware, the spiritual seekers of the sixties (hippies) that brought us the sexual revolution were predominantly the children of gross neglect. This revolution is where ...

Human Rights as Mashiach - A Jewish Theology of Human Rights by Shaiya Rothberg (City of Justice Press - Jerusalem) 3.7 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

[This is an E-Essay - About 20 Pages] It happens now and again that powerful new ideas change the course of history. I'm talking about a special class of redemptive ideas that push humanity to a higher stage of evolution, a stage in which we as a species are wiser and more loving and more just than we were before. One such idea was that all human beings are created in the image of God. Another was that faithfulness to God means abolishing slavery. I think that on the cultural horizon of the human species today there is such a new idea, an idea that could help redeem humanity from her present state of exile and destruction. That idea is the theology of human rights. While religion is sometimes the enemy of human dignity, it can also be a powerful force for its protection. When John Woolman, an American Quaker born in 1720, began preaching that faithfulness to God requires abolishing slavery, he ignited a religious passion that helped facilitate the global paradigm shift that outlawed human bondage across the planet. That religious passion united humanity's moral intuition with her awe in the face of God's creation; it wove the mysterious and enthralling presence of the divine into the love that humans can know for the other. The time has come to preach global moral responsibility: God commands that we enact a "human covenant" to protect and nurture all human beings. While all doctrines may be criticized and all laws revised, the confidence that humanity has placed in human rights establishes them as the foundation of that sacred effort. What we need is an inter-faith and multi-cultural theology of human rights constructed like a mosaic from the world's religious perspectives. We need a theology that will direct the religious energy of our species towards protecting and nurturing human beings. To that end, I offer the below particularistic Jewish contribution to human rights theology. It is more of a program for future study than a complete theology. But the ...

Armenophobia in Azerbaijan by Anzhela Elibegova 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 12 hours ago

The idea of this book came after the presentation of Azeri?hild project which represented a systematized compilation of works by Azerbaijani authors intended for children audiences along with a series of examples of works created by children themselves, which gave a clear demonstration of the gap between the real situation in the Azerbaijani society about anything relating to Armenia and the declared tolerance for diversity of cultures and religions. Naturally enough, we tend to label this hatred as armenophobia often without full awareness of the pivotal role it plays in shaping the ethnic identity of Azerbaijanis; such hatred channeled against all that pertains to Armenia stands as the nemesis of their psychological model and fuels the juxtaposition of us vs. them which is fraught with repercussions for Azerbaijanis themselves. The large archive compiled by the authors of this book a) serves as a thesaurus for an analysis of ongoing processes in the Azerbaijani society and b) allows building a temporal perspective on three levels by covering the past history, current situation and expected ramifications of the armenophobic policy pursued at the state level in Azerbaijan.

The Rise of Trump: America's Authoritarian Spring by Matthew C MacWilliams (Amherst College Press) 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 15 hours ago

The ascendance of Donald Trump to the presidential candidacy of the Republican Party has been both remarkable and, to most commentators, unlikely. In The Rise of Trump: America's Authoritarian Spring, Matthew MacWilliams argues that Trump's rapid rise through a bewildered Republican Party hierarchy is no anomaly; rather, MacWilliams argues, it is the most recent expression of a long-standing theme in American political life, the tendency and temptation to an ascriptive politics -- a political view that builds its basic case on ascribing to any relatively disempowered group (whether defined by race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, or other identifying category) a certain set of qualities that justify discriminatory treatment. The ascriptive tradition in American politics, though longstanding, has generally been kept to a relatively small minority -- a minority whose rights, perhaps paradoxically, have been protected by the principles of Madisonian democracy, even though central to its worldview is the need and urgency of limiting the rights of some. It has found champions in years past in such figures as Andrew Jackson, Huey Long, Joseph McCarthy, and Pat Buchanan. But in Donald Trump this tradition has found a significant new voice, one emboldened by deeper shifts in the American political landscape. Trump's swift and unsettling rise to the pinnacle of presidential politics may point toward the emergence of more significant and substantial questions about the future course of a democratic government committed to principles of equality and the freedom of expression, association, and conscience.

From Assessing to Conserving Biodiversity: Conceptual and Practical Challenges (History, Philosophy and Theory of the Life Sciences Book 24) by Elena Casetta 4.6 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

This open access book features essays written by philosophers, biologists, ecologists and conservation scientists facing the current biodiversity crisis. Despite increasing communication, accelerating policy and management responses, and notwithstanding improving ecosystem assessment and endangered species knowledge, conserving biodiversity continues to be more a concern than an accomplished task. Why is it so?The overexploitation of natural resources by our species is a frequently recognised factor, while the short-term economic interests of governments and stakeholders typically clash with the burdens that implementing conservation actions imply. But this is not the whole story. This book develops a different perspective on the problem by exploring the conceptual challenges and practical defiance posed by conserving biodiversity, namely: on the one hand, the difficulties in defining what biodiversity is and characterizing that "thing" to which the word 'biodiversity'refers to; on the other hand, the reasons why assessing biodiversity and putting in place effective conservation actions is arduous.

Congo's Children by Kem Knapp Sawyer (Pulitzer Center) 3.2 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 15 hours ago

Children in the Democratic Republic of Congo have seen their lives threatened, their families torn apart, their schools destroyed, and their futures compromised. Many are homeless -- abandoned street children, some accused of witchcraft, others born of rape or orphaned by war. But while children are the most vulnerable segment of a broken society, they are also among the most resilient. Congo's Children tells their stories, accompanied by vivid photography and video and drawing on reporting that has appeared in PBS NewsHour, The Washington Post, TruthAtlas, and other outlets. "The stunning photographs and deeply moving text of this book offer a fine introduction to the suffering -- and hopes -- of people in a part of the world we know far too little about." -- Adam Hochschild, author, King Leopold's Ghost "Here's the Congo that doesn't make the news clips or TV screens. The everyday Congo, with people managing to organize, create art, and educate each other despite the odds. A touching paean to the country's resilience." -- Jason Stearns, author, Dancing in the Glory of Monsters: The Collapse of the Congo and the Great War of Africa "The Sawyers' book on Congo's Children is a powerful tool for students of all ages to begin to understand complex issues of poverty and conflict through seeing how knowing people as individuals is a first step in protecting human rights and resolving disputes." -- John B. Hardman, president and chief executive of the Carter Center
