Hostel Hell: Homeless - a year spent with crazies, druggies, prostitutes, con men, gangsters and some really great people by Robert Leslie 3.7 Stars (230 Reviews)    Price verified 59 minutes ago

Hostel Hell, a real life story; my year of No Fixed Address spent with crooks, crazies, druggies, con men, prostitutes, streetwise survivors and a surprising number of really decent people. Previously a reasonably prosperous and successful business man, I was completely unprepared when an unwanted divorce led to the loss of my house and business, bringing on stress, depression, low self-esteem and, I'm ashamed to say, heavy drinking. But for all the feelings of frustration, inadequacy and hopelessness there were some compensations. I met a rich array of people, out-and-out crazies, druggies, smart crooks, devious prostitutes and heard some amazing stories. And to my great surprise a number of these individuals were kind, friendly and helpful. The experience changed my politics and view of the world. I wouldn't want to repeat it but am wiser for it. "Robert Leslie writes autobiografically about his time of homelessness, with much wit and humour, intelligence and a good dose of irony. But also with honesty, humbleness and warmth. One can feel that the very writing helped him get through the difficult, sometimes desperate experience of homelessness. As a writer he has found his very own, personal style, mostly a pleasure to read." "I found this a very entertaining and insightful book about homelessness and hostel life." "A very thought provoking yet entertaining read."

What Faith is Not: The Evils of Doctrine by Pieter Schoonraad Price verified 2 hours ago

Individual religious people can find meaning and purpose in their given religion and find that its doctrine provides them with a blueprint for how to live a moral and righteous life. It can be argued that, on a micro-scale, faith in a god has helped some people be less shitty and forced them to play nice with others. It can further be argued that for the individual, religious institutions have helped them through some tough times and provided necessary support when they needed it most. Another opinion is religions and their doctrines are fundamental tools that help people govern their lives. Whatever god you believe in, sits at the top and influences the rest of your beliefs and actions. A top-down influence on your moral behavior and day-to-day choices. To state it plainly; it tells people what not to do, and what is okay to do. The doctrine of the religion then becomes the rulebook for the religious and when they are in doubt they can consult a religious leader about it. The problem with that is twofold. First, which was a major theme in the previous book, religious leaders are often corrupt and morally bankrupt. If you blindly trust them and take them at their word because they claim God said so, you will be left being made a fool of. And that is the best-case scenario. The worst-case scenario is possibly raped, molested, or married off to a fat old pedophile. The second problem, which is the focus of this book, is the doctrine itself brought forth by religions. What are the rules they expect their followers to adhere to? What hoops do people have to jump through to get into heaven? And what happens if they do not? If the doctrine is fundamentally flawed, it does not matter how pure the intentions of the leaders or the followers are. How do we test the value of the doctrine of religions? Is it possible to argue and critically analyze if a religion's doctrine is helpful or harmful in the sense that it either frees people or traps them? Suppose we want to make ...
