He's got everything she ever wanted. She's got everything he's always needed. But when it comes to giving in to love, he's going to give her a run for her money. LILA A music contract. It's all I've ever wanted. And when my best friend and I hear that Olivia Johns and Connor Wheating -- country's newest It couple -- are on tour and taking auditions, we jump at the chance. When we arrive and have a run-in with an agent -- and she offers me a contract on the spot! -- I jump again. Then I find out there's a catch. I have to pretend to date one of the guys on the tour. Help to rehabilitate his (very, very bad) reputation. Hold his hand, smile for the cameras. The usual. And that doesn't sound like it should be hard. Until I find out that rock star is Rivers Shine. The music industry's resident bad boy... and the guy I accidentally slept with on my first night on the tour. The guy I saw right through. And the guy I think I might already be in love with. He's got everything. Brooding good looks, the most kissable lips I've ever seen, and a hard exterior hiding something a whole lot softer underneath. I don't think he is who he says he is. And I want to figure out what's really under that heartbreaking exterior. Regardless of whether it costs me the contract I want so badly. RIVERS Okay, I know how this all looks. Bad boy, good girl. Cue the photographers and their bylines. Get the feel-good story in place. My agent will finally get the redemption story she's been looking for all these years. But I've got a problem with that scheme. First off, I never go along with anyone else's plan. I've been around the business way too long to fall for every idea pitched at me, and I'm stubborn enough to know I can get my way if I demand it. And the second problem? Lila Potter. She's a good girl stuck in a bad scheme. Sunshine and rainbows being thrown up against a wall of shadow. Pure love and down-home goodness that are way too pure for the likes of me. The truth is, I ...

The Mountain Man and the Geek (The Mountain Men of White River Book 3) by Sena Sage 4.5 Stars (18 Reviews)    Price verified 30 minutes ago

Relieving myself behind a bush isn't my finest moment. But, a hot, rugged cop shining a spotlight on me during the act and seeing everything? Pretty sure I might die from humiliation. I've been looking forward to my mountain getaway for months. A quaint little town. Beautiful scenery. Fresh Air. And, best of all, I get to give a talk at the local university about my favorite subject: Insects. But as soon as I step foot in White River, everything starts going wrong. The hotel claims they lost my reservation, and there are no rooms available anywhere. Then there's a little run-in with the law. The "law" in this case is a hot cop who is determined to make me pay for the heinous crime of relieving myself behind a bush, which seems a little extreme. I mean, it's not like I was robbing a bank or something. Nature called, and there was no convenient place to answer. But Officer A-Hole acts like I'm on the FBI's most-wanted list and throws the book at me. The joke's on him, though, because throwing me in jail means he has to spend the weekend at the tiny local police station taking care of me. Getting arrested sucks, but at least I have a bearded beefy cop to look at while I'm sitting in the slammer. This is a short, cute, small-town Instalove romance with just the right amount of spice and a happily-ever-after ending.

The Need for Prayer: Prayer as a Relationship with God by Efstratios Papanagiotou (E.P. Metamorphosi Single Member P.C.) 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Prayer is a relationship with God. The starting point where the need for prayer begins is when we start to realize that without prayer, without a relationship with God, the pain of life is unbearable and that only through prayer can it become bearable. The final stage of prayer is that of Love; it is the stage where there is no longer any external or internal motivation to pray, as prayer spontaneously flows from within us, constituting in essence a Divine Gift: it is God who prays within us. So in the beginning we pray out of need, in the end we pray out of Love, and the intermediate course constitutes our struggle, our inner journey from ignorance to Love. A letter from a reader: "My dear brother Efstratios, I greet you. I have read the text that you sent me, and I must confess that I was fascinated by it. You have managed to gather in one volume all the basic teachings, admonitions and exhortations on the greatest and most profitable work of prayer. I did not feel that any aspect was missing from this volume, nor did I feel that there was any redundancy. I would ask you to forward it for printing at some priority because I firmly believe that the reading public has a great need to learn to associate with their Creator through the medium of prayer, especially in these difficult times we live in these days". The Rise of Trump: America's Authoritarian Spring by Matthew C MacWilliams (Amherst College Press) 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

The ascendance of Donald Trump to the presidential candidacy of the Republican Party has been both remarkable and, to most commentators, unlikely. In The Rise of Trump: America's Authoritarian Spring, Matthew MacWilliams argues that Trump's rapid rise through a bewildered Republican Party hierarchy is no anomaly; rather, MacWilliams argues, it is the most recent expression of a long-standing theme in American political life, the tendency and temptation to an ascriptive politics -- a political view that builds its basic case on ascribing to any relatively disempowered group (whether defined by race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, or other identifying category) a certain set of qualities that justify discriminatory treatment. The ascriptive tradition in American politics, though longstanding, has generally been kept to a relatively small minority -- a minority whose rights, perhaps paradoxically, have been protected by the principles of Madisonian democracy, even though central to its worldview is the need and urgency of limiting the rights of some. It has found champions in years past in such figures as Andrew Jackson, Huey Long, Joseph McCarthy, and Pat Buchanan. But in Donald Trump this tradition has found a significant new voice, one emboldened by deeper shifts in the American political landscape. Trump's swift and unsettling rise to the pinnacle of presidential politics may point toward the emergence of more significant and substantial questions about the future course of a democratic government committed to principles of equality and the freedom of expression, association, and conscience.

The Far Shore by Edward Ellsberg 4.6 Stars (577 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

June 6, 1944, D-Day: Allied forces took the beaches at Normandy -- and the naval engineering genius of Edward Ellsberg would play a crucial part. Before World War II, Edward Ellsberg had already established himself as a true innovator and master naval engineer, revolutionizing the salvage and rescue of sunken vessels like no one before. Then, having served his country for over a decade, he retired to private life. But his work was not finished. Within hours of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the aging and physically ill Ellsberg was on a train to Washington, DC, to offer his services once again. And they would be needed for the greatest military invasion in human history. In The Far Shore, Rear Admiral Ellsberg describes in detail the meticulous preparation and efforts behind the Normandy Invasion -- efforts that would keep the flow of men and materials streaming onto the beaches and into the heart of Europe. From dealing with the extremes of engineering possibilities to wrestling with the knowledge that countless lives would depend on the success of his intricate planning, Ellsberg would work himself into exhaustion to do his part. His achievements would eventually earn him the Distinguished Service Medal and lead to his appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Vividly described by a man who saw firsthand the horrors of war and the cost of victory, The Far Shore takes readers through the brutal surf, onto the bloody beaches, and into the mind of one of World War II's little-known heroes.

Intersections by Nicki Salcedo (Sentena Books) 4.8 Stars (12 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

Intersections are stories. I'm not a storyteller. I don't tell stories. Stories tell me. I've been told I'm not Southern, because I'm not Southern by birth or ancestry. But I want to be. I've lived some easy striking distance from Atlanta most of my life. There were those San Francisco years. I admit it. I left and brought my heart back with me. I came back for the trees and the grass and the stories. Intersections are connections. Intersections are people. Nicki Salcedo writes a weekly column called Intersections for Decaturish.com, a locally sourced news site based in Atlanta. Each week she watches the world and captures what she sees. She is drawn to opposites. When she sees snow and pollen, she looks for similarities. These columns are her observations. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, and always looking for a bit of goodness. Nicki is an Atlanta native. She is a novelist, blogger, and a working mom. Chances are good she is the room parent for your child's class at school, and she is doing a terrible job. Despite her West Coast education, she considers herself Southern by sensibility, if not by birth. Southern things include talking to ghosts, saying hello to strangers, and waving to drivers with nice manners. She loves Star Trek, football, poetry, church, romance novels. She will never ask for your permission or forgiveness. She finds something in common with just about every person she meets. That's the untold story. That's why she writes.

Searching for Elsie (Eagle Point Search & Rescue Book 2) by Susan Stoker 4.6 Stars (3,349 Reviews)    Price verified 50 minutes ago

When trust has been broken, it will take a special man to heal the rift and her heart. Once upon a time, Elsie Ireland thought she'd found the man of her dreams, only to learn her fairytale romance was just another cautionary tale. Beyond a perfect family image, her husband had little interest in Elsie, and even less in their son. Years later, she and nine-year-old Tony have landed in Fallport, Virginia. She's working two jobs and living in a motel, but Tony has a roof over his head and plenty of love. For Elsie, however, love isn't in the cards. She doesn't have the time to spare... or the trust. After serving his country as a Green Beret, Zeke Calhoun was happy to get out of the military and settle into small-town life as a bar owner. His position with Eagle Point Search and Rescue fulfills his need to serve and provides some of the best friends he's ever known. He didn't realize anything was missing until it was right under his nose every day -- his sweet, shy waitress, Elsie. It isn't easy to convince the independent, gun-shy single mom to let him in, and with memories of his own disastrous marriage still plaguing him, Zeke isn't fully certain he's the best bet for a healthy relationship. But one stolen kiss in a heightened moment, and he's a goner. Vowing that Elsie and Tony's lives are about to change for the better, Zeke is up for the challenge of proving not all men are like her ex. A task made significantly more difficult when a complication throws the couple's fledgling relationship off course -- then quickly spirals into a life-or-death situation no one saw coming. ** Searching for Elsie is the second book in the Eagle Point Search & Rescue Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

The Languages of COVID-19: Translational and Multilingual Perspectives on Global Healthcare (Routledge Studies in Health Humanities) by Piotr Blumczynski (Routledge) Price verified 5 hours ago

This collection advocates languages-based, translational research to be part of the partnerships and collaborations required to make sense of, and respond to, COVID-19 as one of the major global challenges of our time. ? Bringing together scholars and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines, this volume is bound by a common thread stressing the importance of linguistic sensitivity, (inter)cultural knowledge and translational mediation in the frontline response to COVID-19. Featuring contributors from around the world and reflecting on the language used to frame COVID-19 in diverse cultural contexts of the Global North and Global South, the book proposes that paying attention to the transmission of ideas, ideologies, narratives and history through processes of translation results in a broadening of social, cultural and medical understandings of COVID-19. Spanning nearly 20 signed and spoken languages, the volume argues that only in going beyond an Anglophone perspective can we better understand the cultural, social and political facets of the pandemic and, in turn, produce a comprehensive, efficient global response to disease management. ? This book will be of interest to scholars in translation and interpreting studies, modern languages, applied linguistics, cultural studies, Deaf Studies, intercultural communication and medical humanities.

Putting Federalism in Its Place: The Territorial Politics of Social Policy Revisited by Scott L. Greer (University of Michigan Press) Price verified 4 hours ago

What does federalism do to welfare states? This question arises in scholarly debates about policy design as well as in discussions about the right political institutions for a country. It has frustrated many, with federalism seeming to matter in all sorts of combinations with all sorts of issues, from nationalism to racism to intergovernmental competition. The diffuse federalism literature has not come to compelling answers for very basic questions. Scott L. Greer, Daniel Béland, André Lecours, and Kenneth A. Dubin argue for a new approach -- one methodologically focused on configurations of variables within cases rather than a fruitless attempt to isolate "the" effect of federalism; and one that is substantively engaged with identifying key elements in configurations as well as with when and how their interactions matter. Born out of their work on a multi-year, eleven-country project (published as Federalism and Social Policy: Patterns of Redistribution in Eleven Countries, University of Michigan Press, 2019), this book comprises a methodological and substantive agenda. Methodologically, the authors shift to studies that embraced and understood the complexity within which federal political institutions operate. Substantively, they make an argument for the importance of plurinationalism, changing economic interests, and institutional legacies.

The Disarticulate: Language, Disability, and the Narratives of Modernity (Cultural Front Book 8) by James Berger (NYU Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Language is integral to our social being. But what is the status of those who stand outside of language? The mentally disabled, "wild" children, people with autism and other neurological disorders, as well as animals, infants, angels, and artificial intelligences, have all engaged with language from a position at its borders. In the intricate verbal constructions of modern literature, the 'disarticulate' -- those at the edges of language -- have, paradoxically, played essential, defining roles. Drawing on the disarticulate figures in modern fictional works such as Billy Budd, The Sound and the Fury, Nightwood, White Noise, and The Echo Maker, among others, James Berger shows in this intellectually bracing study how these characters mark sites at which aesthetic, philosophical, ethical, political, medical, and scientific discourses converge. It is also the place of the greatest ethical tension, as society confronts the needs and desires of "the least of its brothers." Berger argues that the disarticulate is that which is unaccountable in the discourses of modernity and thus stands as an alternative to the prevailing social order. Using literary history and theory, as well as disability and trauma theory, he examines how these disarticulate figures reveal modernity's anxieties in terms of how it constructs its others.

Diamonds and War: State, Capital, and Labor in British-Ruled Palestine by David De Vries (Berghahn Books) 3.2 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

The mining of diamonds, their trading mechanisms, their financial institutions, and, not least, their cultural expressions as luxury items have engaged the work of historians, economists, social scientists, and international relations experts. Based on previously unexamined historical documents found in archives in Belgium, England, Israel, the Netherlands, and the United States, this book is the first in English to tell the story of the formation of one of the world's main strongholds of diamond production and trade in Palestine during the 1930s and 1940s. The history of the diamond-cutting industry, characterized by a long-standing Jewish presence, is discussed as a social history embedded in the international political economy of its times; the genesis of the industry in Palestine is placed on a broad continuum within the geographic and economic dislocations of Dutch, Belgian, and German diamond-cutting centers. In providing a micro-historical and interdisciplinary perspective, the story of the diamond industry in Mandate Palestine proposes a more nuanced picture of the uncritical approach to the strict boundaries of ethnic-based occupational communities. This book unravels the Middle-eastern pattern of state intervention in the empowerment of private capital and recasts this craft culture's inseparability from international politics during a period of war and transformation of empire.

Keeping the Heart: Lessons on Maintaining a Pure Heart in All Seasons of Life (Annotated, Updated) by John Flavel 4.5 Stars (72 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. (Proverbs 4:23) The heart of man is his worst part before it is regenerated, and the best part afterward. It is the seat of principles, and the fountain of actions. The greatest difficulty in conversion is to win the heart to God. The greatest difficulty after conversion is to keep the heart with God. Direction and help in this great work are the scope of the text wherein we have: • An exhortation: Keep thy heart with all diligence. • The reason or motive enforcing it: For out of it are the issues of life. In the exhortation we'll consider: • The matter of the duty. • The manner of performing it. For out of it [the heart] are the issues of life. In other words, the heart is the source of all vital operations; it is the origin of both good and evil, just as the spring in a watch that sets all the wheels in motion. The heart is the treasury, the hand and tongue are but the shops. The heart contrives, and the members execute: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh (Luke 6:45). About the Author John Flavel (c.1628-1691) was born into an England wracked by political, social, and religious upheaval. Two civil wars and unstable leadership framed the political landscape. Economic hardships and a resurgence of plague further distressed the nation. The church, too, was in turmoil. Flavel, a pastor of one of the many independent churches persecuted by the government, was forced from his church in Dartmouth. In secret and under stress, he continued preaching, writing, and shepherding his flock. He suffered the death of three of his four wives and at least one child. He continued preaching until his sudden death in 1691.

This open access book provides a detailed and up-to-date account of the relevant literature on the legibility of different kinds of typefaces, which goes back over 140 years in the case of reading from paper and more than 50 years in the case of reading from screens. It describes the origins of serif and sans serif styles in ancient inscriptions, their adoption in modern printing techniques, and their legibility in different situations and in different populations of readers. It also examines recent research on the legibility of serif and sans serif typefaces when used with internet browsers, smartphones and other hand-held devices. The book investigates the difference in the legibility of serif typefaces and sans serif typefaces when they are used to produce printed material or when they are used to present material on computer monitors or other screens and it explores the differences in readers' preferences among typefaces. The book's main focus is on the psychology of reading, but there are clear implications for education and publishing. Indeed, the book can be read with benefit by anyone concerned with communicating with others through written text, whether it is printed on paper or displayed on computer screens.

Integrationism and the Self: Reflections on the Legal Personhood of Animals (Routledge Advances in Communication and Linguistic Theory) by Christopher Hutton (Routledge) Price verified 6 hours ago

In recent years a set of challenging questions have arisen in relation to the status of animals; their treatment by human beings; their cognitive abilities; and the nature of their feelings, emotions, and capacity for suffering. This ground-breaking book draws from integrational semiology to investigate arguments around the rights of certain animals to be recognized as legal persons, thereby granting them many of the protections enjoyed by humans. In parallel with these debates, the question of the legal personality of artificial intelligence (AI) systems has moved to the forefront of legal debate, with entities such as robots, cyborgs, self-driving cars, and genetically engineered beings under consideration. Integrationism offers a framework within which the wider theoretical and practical issues can be understood. Law requires closure and categorical answers; integrationism is an open-ended form of inquiry that is seen as removed from particular controversies. This book argues that the two domains can be brought together in a challenging and productive synthesis. A much-needed resource to examine the heart of this fascinating debate and a must-read for anyone interested in semiology, linguistics, philosophy, ethics, and law. Beyond the Bonus March and GI Bill: How Veteran Politics Shaped the New Deal Era by Stephen R. Ortiz (NYU Press) 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

The period between World Wars I and II was a time of turbulent political change, with suffragists, labor radicals, demagogues, and other voices clamoring to be heard. One group of activists that has yet to be closely examined by historians is World War I veterans. Mining the papers of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion (AL), Stephen R. Ortiz reveals that veterans actively organized in the years following the war to claim state benefits (such as pensions and bonuses), and strove to articulate a role for themselves as a distinct political bloc during the New Deal era. Beyond the Bonus March and GI Bill is unique in its treatment of World War I veterans as significant political actors during the interwar period. Ortiz's study reinterprets the political origins of the "Second" New Deal and Roosevelt's electoral triumph of 1936, adding depth not only to our understanding of these events and the political climate surrounding them, but to common perceptions of veterans and their organizations. In describing veteran politics and the competitive dynamics between the AL and the VFW, Ortiz details the rise of organized veterans as a powerful interest group in modern American politics.
