Beginning in 1930 the story centres on the life of six year old George Daniels, growing up with his brother and sister in a tied cottage. On Christmas Eve George is eagerly anticipating his birthday party, but a tragic accident decimates his family. Struggling to cope with what life throws at him in the years following, George finds a kindred spirit in Lottie, but her unexpected disappearance almost destroys him.
