Taken by Werewolves (The Lost Princess of Howling Sky Book 1) by Kestra Pingree 4.2 Stars (533 Reviews)    Price verified 15 hours ago

I was sold to werewolves. They said I'm the Lost Princess of Howling Sky. I said I'm just Sorissa. They said I'm to be claimed by a lecherous prince and that I'll end some timeless war between werewolves, vampires, and humans. I made other plans. Then four powerful werewolves from a rival kingdom came out of nowhere, and I was stolen again. They call themselves Phantom Fangs. Now, they're taking me to their kingdom to keep me "safe." They probably intend for some other prince to claim me instead. But I'm going to change their minds. They're different from the other werewolves. They're kind, they listen to me, and they make my blood run hot. Can I trust them? Claim the princess, rule the world. -- The Lost Princess of Howling Sky is a high fantasy with dystopian elements. It's also a spicy romance and intended for readers 18+. Some characters are LGBTQ+. All books have been published; this series is complete.

Halloween Werewolf (The Holiday Shifter Mates Book 1) by Kestra Pingree 4.1 Stars (104 Reviews)    Price verified 15 hours ago

A wolf howls on the mountain. Austin's heart skips a beat. It's been a long time since he heard that sound. And it brings back memories. Some are good. Some are bad. It was the usual Halloween fun. Then it was two "werewolf" pelts flaunted on a viral video. All of it conjures up memories of Mateo, Austin's first love. When Mateo disappeared four years ago, Austin tried to let him go. He tried to forget about the "werewolves." But he couldn't. Mateo is one of them. That howling means Mateo is back. And Austin has no intention of letting him leave this time. -- The Holiday Shifter Mates is an LGBTQ+ steamy paranormal shifter romance series for adults. Each book works as a standalone novel with an HEA, but for the best reader experience, they should be read in order. Halloween Werewolf is a gay (MM) romance. All books have been published; this series is complete.

Sweden after Nazism: Politics and Culture in the Wake of the Second World War by Johan Östling 3.6 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 15 hours ago

As a nominally neutral power during the Second World War, Sweden in the early postwar era has received comparatively little attention from historians. Nonetheless, as this definitive study shows, the war -- and particularly the specter of Nazism -- changed Swedish society profoundly. Prior to 1939, many Swedes shared an unmistakable affinity for German culture, and even after the outbreak of hostilities there remained prominent apologists for the Third Reich. After the Allied victory, however, Swedish intellectuals reframed Nazism as a discredited, distinctively German phenomenon rooted in militarism and Romanticism. Accordingly, Swedes' self-conception underwent a dramatic reformulation. From this interplay of suppressed traditions and bright dreams for the future, postwar Sweden emerged.

Croatian Radical Separatism and Diaspora Terrorism During the Cold War (Central European Studies) by Mate Nikola Tokić 3.5 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

Croatian Radical Separatism and Diaspora Terrorism During the Cold War examines one of the most active but least remembered groups of terrorists of the Cold War: radical anti-Yugoslav Croatian separatists. Operating in countries as widely dispersed as Sweden, Australia, Argentina, West Germany, and the United States, Croatian extremists were responsible for scores of bombings, numerous attempted and successful assassinations, two guerilla incursions into socialist Yugoslavia, and two airplane hijackings during the height of the Cold War. In Australia alone, Croatian separatists carried out no less than sixty-five significant acts of violence in one ten-year period. Diaspora Croats developed one of the most far-reaching terrorist networks of the Cold War and, in total, committed on average one act of terror every five weeks worldwide between 1962 and 1980. Toki? focuses on the social and political factors that radicalized certain segments of the Croatian diaspora population during the Cold War and the conditions that led them to embrace terrorism as an acceptable form of political expression. At its core, this book is concerned with the discourses and practices of radicalization -- the ways in which both individuals and groups who engage in terrorism construct a particular image of the world to justify their actions. Drawing on exhaustive evidence from seventeen archives in ten countries on three continents -- including diplomatic communiqués, political pamphlets and manifestos, manuals on bomb-making, transcripts of police interrogations of terror suspects, and personal letters among terrorists -- Toki? tells the comprehensive story of one of the Cold War's most compelling global political movements.

Revisiting Migrant Networks: Migrants and their Descendants in Labour Markets (IMISCOE Research Series) by Elif Keskiner (Springer) Price verified 9 hours ago

This open access book provides new conceptualisations on the networks of migrants and their descendants in accessing the labour market. Although references to social networks are common in discussions of migration, simplified ideas of co-ethnic networks often obscure the reality, for example confounding ties with co-ethnics and 'strong ties'. This open access book addresses key questions about the role of networks in migration contexts, particularly in relation to how migrants and their descendants, access the labour market and develop their employment trajectories over time. Rather than adopting a narrow essentializing ethnic lens, the research presented in this book explores intersectional identities of class, generation and gender. By focusing on the kinds of capital circulating between ties, including the dark side of social capital, the book offers insights into power dynamics and the potentially exclusionary dimension of networks. Taking a long term view, across generations, the research in this book shows how migrants and their descendants mobilize resources to tackle discrimination and enhance their position within particular labour markets. Drawing on robust quantitative and rich qualitative data, this book provides a primary source to students, scholars and policy-makers focusing on issues of migration, social networks, social mobility as well as labour market inequalities.

Reichenbach’s Paradise: Constructing the Realm of Probabilstic Common “Causes” by Leszek Wronski (De Gruyter Open Poland) 3.8 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified 15 hours ago

Since its introduction by Hans Reichenbach, many philosophers have claimed to refute the idea - known as the common cause principle - that any surprising correlation between any two factors that do not directly influence one another is due to some common cause. For example, falsity of the principle is frequently inferred from falsifiability of Bell's inequalities. The author demonstrates, however, that the situation is not so straightforward. There is more than one version of the principle formulated with the use of different variants of Reichenbach-inspired notions; their falsity still remains an open question. The book traces different formulations of the principle and provides proofs of a few pertinent theorems, settling the relevant questions in various probability spaces. In exploring mathematical and philosophical issues surrounding the principle, the book offers both philosophical insight and mathematical rigor.

Mobile Hollywood: Labor and the Geography of Production by Kevin Sanson (University of California Press) Price verified 15 hours ago

A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Contemporary film and television production is extraordinarily mobile. Filming large-scale studio productions in Atlanta, Budapest, London, Prague, or Australia's Gold Coast makes Hollywood jobs available to people and places far removed from Southern California -- but it also requires individuals to uproot their lives as they travel around the world in pursuit of work. Drawing on interviews with a global contingent of film and television workers, Kevin Sanson weaves an analysis of the sheer scale and complexity of mobile production into a compelling account of the impact that mobility has had on job functions, working conditions, and personal lives. Mobile Hollywood captures how an expanded geography of production not only intensifies the often invisible pressures that production workers now face but also stretches the parameters of screen-media labor far beyond craftwork and creativity.

Chasing Columbus to the Mother of All Worlds : A Standalone Bloodline Novel by Anthony Vincent Bruno 3.9 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

Was Christopher Columbus a hero, or a nonchalant fantasist who inadvertently delivered genocide to the shores of a naïve continent? Genoese born Marcus Tychon Triarius regards the 'Boss' as a man of enormous vison and courage. The youngster stows away aboard the Pinta, fleeing a European blood feud, but the New World is not distant enough for the man who murdered Marcus' father and who now seeks to kill Marcus, stranded somewhere beneath the canopy of the unforgiving Hispaniola wilderness. Marcus survives attacks by a demon in many guises and eventually marries a beautiful new arrival from Spain, unaware that his wife was sent his way by his father's aging murderer. Marcus happens across a cave of unblemished gold deep in the jungle interior and is determined to put it to good use, but the Conquistadors have other ideas. Sickness forces the Triarius family across the sea to Mexico where the Mother of all Worlds lays waiting in Guadalupe. When tragedy strikes anew, a man comes forward with a mysterious secret. Digital Health Care in Taiwan: Innovations of National Health Insurance by Po-Chang Lee (Springer) Price verified 15 hours ago

This open access book introduces the National Health Insurance (NHI) system of Taiwan with a particular emphasis on its application of digital technology to improve healthcare access and quality. The authors explicate how Taiwan integrates its strong Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry with 5G to construct an information system that facilitates medical information exchange, collects data for planning and research, refines medical claims review procedures and even assists in fighting COVID-19. Taiwan's NHI, launched in 1995, is a single-payer system funded primarily through payroll-based premiums. It covers all citizens and foreign residents with the same comprehensive benefits without the long waiting times seen in other single-payer systems. Though premium rate adjustment and various reforms were carried out in 2010, the NHI finds itself at a crossroads over its financial stability. With the advancement of technologies and an aging population, it faces challenges of expanding coverage to newly developed treatments and diagnosis methods and applying the latest innovations to deliver telemedicine and more patient-centered services. The NHI, like the national health systems of other countries, also needs to address the privacy concerns of the personal health data it collects and the issues regarding opening this data for research or commercial use. In this book, the 12 chapters cover the history, characteristics, current status, innovations and future reform plans of the NHI in the digital era. Topics explored include: • Income Strategy • Payment Structure • Pursuing Health Equity • Infrastructure of the Medical Information System • Innovative Applications of the Medical Information • Applications of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Digital Health Care in Taiwan is essential reading for academic researchers and students in healthcare administration, health policy, health systems research, and health services delivery, as ...

The Cowboy Way by Tory Richards 4.1 Stars (15 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

Arson, murder, an escaped convict intent on revenge, and a scorned ex-lover complicate the lives of a rancher's daughter, and the arrogant, sexy foreman who wants her for his own. Excerpt - "I can take care of myself." Lacey finally tugged away from him. "And you owe me for that bottle of perfume." So much for their truce. She turned abruptly to leave. "You little hellcat." His tone was low; the words ground out between his teeth. Chase's hand encircled her arm, and he jerked her back to him. "You almost blind me with that stuff, and now you expect me to replace it?" He pulled Lacey even closer, until her breasts were crushed against his unyielding, naked chest. His hands were like steel bands around the flesh of her upper arms. She caught her breath, her heart slamming in her chest. The heat from Chase's body seeped into hers, drawing an immediate response. Lacey felt her nipples harden and tingle with excitement. Something hot flowed through her aroused body, pooling between her thighs. The palms of her hands flattened against his chest; the lower half of her body arched into his as lust took control of her emotions. Fear that Chase would realize what he was doing to her nearly crippled her. "Let me go." Oh God. Was that her weak, pitiful voice? Without warning, Chase's hand was at the back of her head, his fingers threading through her loose hair and twisting it into a knot. A soft cry escaped Lacey when she found her head jerked back. Lightning revealed the raw passion etched on Chase's chiseled face. The flaring nostrils, his prominent cheekbones, and tightly drawn lips left no doubts that he was as turned on as she was. The blaze in his eyes held Lacey's gaze captive. Filled with an unspoken promise of what was to come. She could barely take a breath when he began to lower his face. "I've been hard since the first time I laid eyes on you." She felt his warm breath against her face. "No... " Lacey's heart was about to pound out of her chest. ...

A Knight at the Opera: Heine, Wagner, Herzl, Peretz, and the Legacy of Der Tannhäuser (Shofar Supplements in Jewish Studies) by Leah Garrett (Purdue University Press) Price verified 8 hours ago

A Knight at the Opera examines the remarkable and unknown role that the medieval legend (and Wagner opera) Tannhäuser played in Jewish cultural life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book analyzes how three of the greatest Jewish thinkers of that era, Heinrich Heine, Theodor Herzl, and I. L. Peretz, used this central myth of Germany to strengthen Jewish culture and to attack anti-Semitism. In the original medieval myth, a Christian knight lives in sin with the seductive pagan goddess Venus in the Venusberg. He escapes her clutches and makes his way to Rome to seek absolution from the Pope. The Pope does not pardon Tannhäuser and he returns to the Venusberg. During the course of A Knight at the Opera, readers will see how Tannhäuser evolves from a medieval knight, to Heine's German scoundrel in early modern Europe, to Wagner's idealized German male, and finally to Peretz's pious Jewish scholar in the Land of Israel. Venus herself also undergoes major changes from a pagan goddess, to a lusty housewife, to an overbearing Jewish mother. The book also discusses how the founder of Zionism, Theodor Herzl, was so inspired by Wagner's opera that he wrote The Jewish State while attending performances of it, and he even had the Second Zionist Congress open to the music of Tannhäuser's overture. A Knight at the Opera uses Tannhäuser as a way to examine the changing relationship between Jews and the broader world during the advent of the modern era, and to question if any art, even that of a prominent anti-Semite, should be considered taboo.

He doesn't need some fancy suit telling him how to run his business -- even if the advice is coming from the most stunning woman he's ever seen. Worse, she's right more than she's wrong. When he discovers that behind closed doors Kendra enjoys taking orders rather than giving them, their relationship takes a turn he never expected. But trouble is coming for Club Apocalypse. If Mark can't learn that sometimes even the Master must bend, he risks losing everything he's worked to build.

Biomineralization: From Molecular and Nano-structural Analyses to Environmental Science by Kazuyoshi Endo (Springer) 3.9 Stars (10 Reviews)    Price verified 14 hours ago

This open access book is the proceedings of the 14th International Symposium on Biomineralization (BIOMIN XIV) held in 2017 at Tsukuba. Over the past 45 years, biomineralization research has unveiled details of the characteristics of the nano-structure of various biominerals; the formation mechanism of this nano-structure, including the initial stage of crystallization; and the function of organic matrices in biominerals, and this knowledge has been applied to dental, medical, pharmaceutical, materials, agricultural and environmental sciences and paleontology. As such, biomineralization is an important interdisciplinary research area, and further advances are expected in both fundamental and applied research.

Jews in the Gym: Judaism, Sports, and Athletics (Studies in Jewish Civilization Book 23) by Leonard J. Greenspoon (Purdue University Press) Price verified 7 hours ago

For some, the connection between Jews and athletics might seem far-fetched. But in fact, as is highlighted by the fourteen chapters in this collection, Jews have been participating in-and thinking about-sports for more than two thousand years. The articles in this volume scan a wide chronological range: from the Hellenistic period (first century BCE) to the most recent basketball season. The range of athletes covered is equally broad: from participants in Roman-style games to wrestlers, boxers, fencers, baseball players, and basketball stars. The authors of these essays, many of whom actively participate in athletics themselves, raise a number of intriguing questions, such as: What differing attitudes toward sports have Jews exhibited across periods and cultures? Is it possible to be a "good Jew" and a "great athlete"? In what sports have Jews excelled, and why? How have Jews overcome prejudices on the part of the general populace against a Jewish presence on the field or in the ring? In what ways has Jewish participation in sports aided, or failed to aid, the perception of Jews as "good Germans," "good Hungarians," "good Americans," and so forth? This volume, which features a number of illustrations (many of them quite rare), is not only accessible to the general reader, but also contains much information of interest to the scholar in Jewish studies, American studies, and sports history.

Mishpachah: The Jewish Family in Tradition and in Transition (Studies in Jewish Civilization Book 27) by Leonard J. Greenspoon (Purdue University Press) Price verified 10 hours ago

Dictionary definitions of the term mishpachah are seemingly straightforward: "A Jewish family or social unit including close and distant relatives-sometimes also close friends." As accurate as such definitions are, they fail to capture the diversity and vitality of real, flesh-and-blood Jewish families. Families have been part of Jewish life for as long as there have been Jews. It is useful to recall that the family is the basic narrative building block of the stories in the biblical book of Genesis, which can be interpreted in the light of ancient literary traditions, archaeological discoveries, and rabbinic exegesis. Rabbinic literature also is filled with discussions about interactions, rancorous as well as amicable, between parents and among siblings. Sometimes harmony characterizes relations between the parent and the child; as often, alas, there is conflict. The rabbis, always aware of the realities of life, chide and advise as best they can. For the modern period, the changing roles of males and females in society at large have contributed to differing expectations as to their roles within the family. The relative increase in the number of adopted children, from both Jewish and non-Jewish backgrounds, and more recently, the shifting reality of assisted reproductive technologies and the possibility of cloning human embryos, all raise significant moral and theological questions that require serious consideration. Through the studies brought together in this volume, more than a dozen scholars look at the Jewish family in wide variety of social, historical, religious, and geographical contexts. In the process, they explore both diverse and common features in the past and present, and they chart possible courses for Jewish families in the future.

olam he-zeh v'olam ha-ba: This World and the World to Come in Jewish Belief and Practice (Studies in Jewish Civilization Book 28) by Leonard J. Greenspoon Price verified 7 hours ago

Dining on Leviathan. Discoursing with Socrates. Debating the nature of existence in the afterlife. These are among the topics authors address in this wide-ranging account of how Jews have conceptualized the world to come and structured their lives in this world accordingly. Some authorities portrayed the afterlife as an endless round of feasting and drinking of chazerie that would put the fanciest Las Vegas buffets to shame. There were visionaries who mapped out otherworldly climes populated by monstrous creatures. Others, decidedly more staid, saw the world to come as a location where neither food nor wine would be consumed; instead, it would offer the opportunity to bring moral certitude to questionable practices that could not be eradicated in this world. More down to earth are comparisons between Rabbi Akiva and Socrates, and analyses of influential thinkers like Moses Mendelssohn and Emmanuel Levinas. And more practical are discussions of how concepts of the afterlife serve to determine mourning practices, or more broadly, how humans should fashion their lives in the here and now. The chronological range of these chapters also is impressive. The earliest documents discussed are from Apocryphal literature, including apocalypses, that were composed from 400 BCE to 200 CE. There are creative analyses of rabbinic material and documents from the medieval period through the twentieth century. Evolving ritual and liturgical practices bring readers up to the early twenty-first century. Each of the thirteen authors whose works are brought together in this volume shows historical, cultural, and religious sensitivity both to the unique features of these differing manifestations and to the elements that unite them. For the readers of this volume, which is equally rewarding for general audiences and for specialists, the result is a carefully nuanced, creatively balanced exploration of the breadth of Jewish thought and practice concerning some of the most profound and ...

Next Year in Jerusalem: Exile and Return in Jewish History (Studies in Jewish Civilization Book 30) by Leonard J. Greenspoon Price verified 3 hours ago

Next Year in Jerusalem recognizes that Jews have often experienced or imaged periods of exile and return in their long tradition. The fourteen papers in this collection examine this phenomenon from different approaches, genres, and media. They cover the period from biblical times through today. Among the exiles highlighted are the Babylonian Exile (sixth century BCE), the exile after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple (70 CE), and the years after the Crusaders (tenth century CE). Events of return include the aftermath of the Babylonian Exile (fifth century BCE), the centuries after the Temple's destruction (first and second CE), and the years of the establishment of the modern State of Israel (1948 CE). In each instance authors pay close attention to the historical settings, the literature created by Jews and others, and the theological explanations offered (typically, this was seen as divine punishment or reward for Israel's behavior). The entire volume is written authoritatively and accessibly.
