There are differences, including the fact that there is often no exchange of matter accompanying an exchange of energy in the form of heat. The topics we consider in this text include: diffusion, dispersion, and sorption. We cover both analytical and numerical solutions.

Hyundai and Kia Motors: The Early Years and Product Development by Donald G Southerton provides deep insights into the rise of the Korean car industry. From the 1960s to early 2000s, political and economic forces impacted the growth and development of the South Korean carmakers, including Hyundai and Kia Motors. In addition, the brands at times partnered for technology with Ford, Mazda, and Mitsubishi, along with world class designers like Giorgetto Giugiaro. Expanding rapidly the Korean brands soon looked to new international markets, including the U.S. Despite the failure of Kia Motors to survive the IMF Crisis, the merger with Hyundai led to integrated technology research, development, and manufacturing-- not to mention the economies of scale needed for the Korean automaker to compete globally with industry heavyweights such as Toyota, Ford, GM, and VW. On the Road with Bronco Billy - A Trucking Journal by Dale Olausen 4.0 Stars (17 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

What follows is an account of a ten day journey through western North America during a working trip, delivering lumber from Edmonton Alberta to Dallas Texas, and returning with oilfield equipment. The writer had the opportunity to accompany a friend who is a professional truck driver, which he eagerly accepted. He works as a statistician for the University of Alberta, and is therefore is generally confined to desk, chair, and computer. The chance to see the world from the cab of a truck, and be immersed in the truck driving culture was intriguing. In early May 1997 they hit the road. Some time has passed since this journal was written and many things have changed since the late 1990's. That renders the journey as not just a geographical one, but also a historical account, which I think only increases its interest. We were fortunate to have an eventful trip - a mechanical breakdown, a near miss from a tornado, and a large-scale flood were among these events. But even without these turns of fate, the drama of the landscape, the close-up view of the trucking lifestyle, and the opportunity to observe the cultural habits of a wide swath of western North America would have been sufficient to fill up an interesting journal. The travelogue is about 20,000 words, about 60 to 90 minutes of reading, at typical reading speeds.

Tesla Vs Edison: A Captivating Guide to the War of the Currents and the Life of Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison (Historical Figures) by Captivating History 4.1 Stars (106 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

Explore the War of the Currents and the Individual Lives of Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison Free History BONUS Inside! Two captivating manuscripts in one book: • Nikola Tesla: A Captivating Guide to the Life of a Genius Inventor • Thomas Edison: A Captivating Guide to the Life of a Genius Inventor Who was the real winner in the war of the currents? What happened to both of them? And what were their lives like from beginning to end? These are just some of the questions this book aims to answer so you can come to your own conclusion about the question; who was the better inventor, Nikola Tesla, or Thomas Edison? Obsessive, brilliant, and tortured, Nikola Tesla was lauded for his invention of the alternating current (AC), and other significant contributions to science. His claim that "harnessing the forces of nature was the only worthwhile scientific endeavor" both impressed and enraged the scientific community. Eventually, his peers could no longer dismiss his eccentricities and began to view him as a crackpot -- a potentially dangerous one. The part of this book that covers mostly Nikola Tesla includes topics such as: • Childhood • Education and Early Career • Patents and Politics • The Eccentric Genius • Tesla's Coil and the Niagara Contract • Influential Friends and the Lure of Flight • The Wardenclyffe Tower • 1914 and Beyond • And much more! Thomas Edison was born into a hard-working but attentive family. He struggled in school and became deaf at an early age. Born on February 11, 1847, Edison would become, arguably, the best-known American inventor of all time. His invention of the light bulb was one of more than 1,000 patents he held during his lifetime. Others included the phonograph, the electrical grid, and motion pictures. His work changed the way we see and hear the world around us. The part of this book that covers mostly Thomas Edison includes topics such as: • America Before Edison • ...

CNC Programming Skills: Live Tool Drilling Cycles on a Fanuc Lathe by S. K. Sinha 4.4 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

This is the third eBook in the series, "CNC Programming Skills." This book is a part of the recently-published book, "Computer-Aided Manufacturing: CNC Lathe, Probing & FMS," by the same author. Therefore, if one already has the CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) book, this book need not be purchased. The CAM book is in form of a handbook for CNC lathe, covering almost everything related to programming (G-code programming as well as macro programming), tooling and operation. A good number of jobs require machining by both lathe and milling machines. A flange with bolt holes is one example. While turning and facing are done on a lathe, the holes need to be drilled on a milling machine (or a drilling machine). Involvement of two different machines with independent setup requirement increases the cycle time as well as production cost, despite the fact that the operation on the milling machine is very simple. To address this issue, these days higher-end lathes come equipped with live-tooling arrangement, allowing certain milling-like operations such as drilling, boring and tapping anywhere on the face of the workpiece, as well as in the radial direction at any angular position. The live tools can also be used for operations like polygon turning, and polar and cylindrical interpolations. In this book. we will restrict our discussion to drilling/boring/tapping operations only. To facilitate these operations, a number of built-in canned cycles are available. We would be explaining these with suitable examples in quite detail so as to cover nearly everything a programmer needs to know about them. Refer to the CAM book for other applications, The following excerpts from the book would give some idea of the style of presentation in the book: Front/Side Drilling Cycles (G83/G87): On a milling machine, two separate G codes are available for full-retraction peck drilling (suitable for holes with large length to diameter ratio) and high-speed (partial retraction) peck ...

Job Shop Leaders: Small Wins From a Factory Life by Torrence Smith 4.4 Stars (15 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

This book is about job shops. Inside is a combination of stories and practical tips from my experience. It's not theory. This is how I lost money, made money, kept my job, or got promoted. These are all the things I dug through the literature trying to find answers to. Job shops can be many different types of businesses. Factories, distributors, and government offices could all be considered job shops. Job shops are all those places where the work you do, and the volume of work varies from day to day, even custom design businesses where every piece is unique. There were seven challenges I struggled with that I couldn't find adequate answers to. We talk about it here by addressing: controlling lead times, eliminating knack points, Return on Invested Capital (ROIC), solving dynamic capacity, getting to full kit, order unevenness (Mura), and Minimum Viable Process (MVP). If you work in high volume mass production this probably isn't written for you. If you've never lost a night's sleep trying to understand how your business works, put this down. If you like big words and highly technical descriptions I'm not your guy. This book is for the searchers. Because if high-volume production is heavy metal, make to order is jazz. We're looking forward to this. Come on inside. QUESTION AND ANSWER WITH THE AUTHOR: Q: Where did the idea for this book come from? A: Hindsight is such a powerful tool. Sometimes it's good to hit rewind and see how something happened. I'm also afraid of forgetting. So this book serves as a notebook of past projects, observations, and struggles. Hopefully, in some small way, it is also recognition of the people with whom I worked. The factory is much maligned. There's no shortage of stories about people injured in them, or people seeking to escape them. I'd like to show that they are worthy of our efforts and our time. I believe we take joy in work, but the work must be challenging. And I've found that make-to-order factories and businesses fit ...

Clarity, Cut, and Culture: The Many Meanings of Diamonds by Susan Falls (NYU Press) 3.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

What our obsession with diamonds reveals about our material culture Images of diamonds appear everywhere in American culture. And everyone who has a diamond has a story to tell about it. Our stories about diamonds not only reveal what we do with these tiny stones, but also suggest how we create value, meaning, and identity through our interactions with material culture in general. Things become meaningful through our interactions with them, but how do people go about making meaning? What can we learn from an ethnography about the production of identity, creation of kinship, and use of diamonds in understanding selves and social relationships? By what means do people positioned within a globalized political-economy and a compelling universe of advertising interact locally with these tiny polished rocks? This book draws on 12 months of fieldwork with diamond consumers in New York City as well as an analysis of the iconic De Beers campaign that promised romance, status, and glamour to anyone who bought a diamond to show that this thematic pool is just one resource among many that diamond owners draw upon to engage with their own stones. The volume highlights the important roles that memory, context, and circumstance also play in shaping how people interpret and then use objects in making personal worlds. It shows that besides operating as subjects in an ad-burdened universe, consumers are highly creative, idiosyncratic, and theatrical agents.

Autonomous Trajectory Planning and Guidance Control for Launch Vehicles (Springer Series in Astrophysics and Cosmology) by Zhengyu Song 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 4 hours ago

This open access book highlights the autonomous and intelligent flight control of future launch vehicles for improving flight autonomy to plan ascent and descent trajectories onboard, and autonomously handle unexpected events or failures during the flight. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, space launch activities worldwide have grown vigorously. Meanwhile, commercial launches also account for the booming trend. Unfortunately, the risk of space launches still exists and is gradually increasing in line with the rapidly rising launch activities and commercial rockets. In the history of space launches, propulsion and control systems are the two main contributors to launch failures. With the development of information technologies, the increase of the functional density of hardware products, the application of redundant or fault-tolerant solutions, and the improvement of the testability of avionics, the launch losses caused by control systems exhibita downward trend, and the failures induced by propulsion systems become the focus of attention. Under these failures, the autonomous planning and guidance control may save the missions. This book focuses on the latest progress of relevant projects and academic studies of autonomous guidance, especially on some advanced methods which can be potentially real-time implemented in the future control system of launch vehicles. In Chapter 1, the prospect and technical challenges are summarized by reviewing the development of launch vehicles. Chapters 2 to 4 mainly focus on the flight in the ascent phase, in which the autonomous guidance is mainly reflected in the online planning. Chapters 5 and 6 mainly discuss the powered descent guidance technologies. Finally, since aerodynamic uncertainties exert a significant impact on the performance of the ascent / landing guidance control systems, the estimation of aerodynamic parameters, which are helpful to improve flight autonomy, is discussed in Chapter 7. The book ...

The Colours of Energy: Essays on the Future of Energy in Society [Tablet Version] by Gert Jan Kramer 4.2 Stars (17 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

In The Colours of Energy - Essays on the Future of Energy in Society, leading energy thinkers explore the future of energy in society. In 36 provoking and inspiring essays, they question established truths and chart possible paths towards a more sustainable future. They share their insights on how to provide energy to an increasingly affluent and growing world population within the boundaries of our planet. The 55 authors are thought leaders in industry, government and academia. Their thinking covers the full range of the issues related to energy transitions. Subjects are as varied as geopolitics, mobility, biomass, geologic climate records, nuclear energy and the ethics of oil recovery. Jorgen Randers (Club of Rome) draws lessons from his seminal The Limits to Growth. Amory Lovins (Rocky Mountain Institute) paints energy efficiency as a disruptive technology. Jeremy Bentham (Shell's scenario group) analyses how global carbon emissions may be reduced to a net zero. The book also contains a previously unpublished essay by James Lovelock ('Gaia hypothesis'), written in 1966 about the year 2000. Some essays focus on specific countries, which show how challenges and approaches differ from place to place. They analyse, for example, how Germany may cope with its excess of renewable power and how China could become the next world leader of green energy. Energy transitions offer a great deal of opportunities, but immense challenges at the same time, with few easy answers. These challenges merit an informed debate. This is the reason why Shell initiated this book and is publishing it for free. The book was edited by Gert Jan Kramer (Shell, Leiden University) and Bram Vermeer (science writer). It has a foreword by Ben van Beurden (CEO of Shell) and a preface by Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker (Co-President of the Club of Rome). Written in accessible non-technical language, The colours of energy is an essential read for anyone interested in the world of energy and energy ...

Netflix Nations: The Geography of Digital Distribution (Critical Cultural Communication Book 28) by Ramon Lobato (NYU Press) 4.3 Stars (23 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

How streaming services and internet distribution have transformed global television culture. Television, once a broadcast medium, now also travels through our telephone lines, fiber optic cables, and wireless networks. It is delivered to viewers via apps, screens large and small, and media players of all kinds. In this unfamiliar environment, new global giants of television distribution are emerging -- including Netflix, the world's largest subscription video-on-demand service. Combining media industry analysis with cultural theory, Ramon Lobato explores the political and policy tensions at the heart of the digital distribution revolution, tracing their longer history through our evolving understanding of media globalization. Netflix Nations considers the ways that subscription video-on-demand services, but most of all Netflix, have irrevocably changed the circulation of media content. It tells the story of how a global video portal interacts with national audiences, markets, and institutions, and what this means for how we understand global media in the internet age. Netflix Nations addresses a fundamental tension in the digital media landscape - the clash between the internet's capacity for global distribution and the territorial nature of media trade, taste, and regulation. The book also explores the failures and frictions of video-on-demand as experienced by audiences. The actual experience of using video platforms is full of subtle reminders of market boundaries and exclusions: platforms are geo-blocked for out-of-region users ("this video is not available in your region"); catalogs shrink and expand from country to country; prices appear in different currencies; and subtitles and captions are not available in local languages. These conditions offer rich insight for understanding the actual geographies of digital media distribution. Contrary to popular belief, the story of Netflix is not just an American one. From Argentina to Australia, Netflix's ...

Ecology of Angola: Terrestrial Biomes and Ecoregions by Brian John Huntley (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 4 hours ago

This open access book richly illustrates the first, and comprehensive, account of the country's biomes and ecoregions, the driving forces that account for their diversity and vulnerability, and the ecological principles that provide an understanding of the patterns and processes that have shaped landscapes, ecoregions, and ecosystems. Angola encompasses the greatest diversity of terrestrial biomes and is the second richest in terms of ecoregions, of any African country. Yet its biodiversity and the structure and functioning of its ecosystems are largely undocumented. The author draws on personal field observations from over 50 years of involvement in ecological and conservation studies in Angola and across Southern Africa. The vast recent literature published by researchers in neighboring, better resourced countries provides depth to the accounts of ecological principles and processes relevant to Angola and thus contributing to the understanding and sustainable management of its natural resources.

Knowing the Salween River: Resource Politics of a Contested Transboundary River (The Anthropocene: Politik—Economics—Society—Science Book 27) by Carl Middleton (Springer) 3.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 2 hours ago

This open access book focuses on the Salween River, shared by China, Myanmar, and Thailand, that is increasingly at the heart of pressing regional development debates. The basin supports the livelihoods of over 10 million people, and within it there is great socio-economic, cultural and political diversity. The basin is witnessing intensifying dynamics of resource extraction, alongside large dam construction, conservation and development intervention, that is unfolding within a complex terrain of local, national and transnational governance. With a focus on the contested politics of water and associated resources in the Salween basin, this book offers a collection of empirical case studies that highlights local knowledge and perspectives. Given the paucity of grounded social science studies in this contested basin, this book provides conceptual insights at the intersection of resource governance, development, and politics of knowledge relevant to researchers, policy-makers and practitioners at a time when rapid change is underway. - Fills a significant knowledge gap on a major river in Southeast Asia, with empirical and conceptual contributions - Inter-disciplinary perspective and by a range of writers, including academics, policy-makers and civil society researchers, the majority from within Southeast Asia - New policy insights on a river at the cross-roads of a major political and development transition

Advancing U.S. Latino Entrepreneurship: A New National Economic Imperative by Marlene Orozco (Purdue University Press) 4.5 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Advancing U.S. Latino Entrepreneurship examines business formation and success among Latinos by identifying arrangements that enhance entrepreneurship and by understanding the sociopolitical contexts that shape entrepreneurial trajectories. While it is well known that Latinos make up one of the largest and fastest growing populations in the U.S., Latino-owned businesses are now outpacing this population growth and the startup business growth of all other demographic groups in the country. The institutional arrangements shaping business formation are no level playing field. Minority entrepreneurs face racism and sexism, but structural barriers are not the only obstacles that matter; there are agentic barriers and coethnics present challenges as well as support to each other. Yet minorities engage in business formation, and in doing so, change institutional arrangements by transforming the attitudes of society and the practices of policymakers. The economic future of the country is tied to the prospects of Latinos forming and growing business. The diversity of Latino experience constitutes an economic resource for those interested in forming businesses that appeal to native-born citizens and fellow immigrants alike, ranging from local to national to international markets. This book makes a substantial contribution to the literature on entrepreneurship and wealth creation by focusing on Latinos, a population vastly understudied on these topics, by describing processes and outcomes for Latino entrepreneurs. Unfairly, the dominant story of Latinos -- especially Mexican Americans -- is that of dispossession and its consequences. Advancing U.S. Latino Entrepreneurship makes clear the undiminished ambitions of Latinos as well as the transformative relationships among people, their practices, and the political context in which they operate. The reality of Latino entrepreneurs demands new attention and focus.

Emerging Science for Sustainable Water Resources Management: A guide for water professionals and practitioners in India by Sunita Sarkar 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 4 hours ago

As a society, we are undergoing a number of interconnected changes, from burgeoning populations and rising standards of living, to widespread urbanisation and rapid environmental degradation, all under a changing climate. Together, these changes are having significant impacts on our freshwater systems. Rapid innovation is needed to adapt our water management practices and technologies in order to meet water requirements while maintaining and, where needed, restoring, the ecosystems that provide us with life sustaining services, so that the resource is also protected for the future. This book shows why and how emerging scientific knowledge and new technologies can support sustainable management and use of freshwater resources. It provides an introduction to what new science is out there, where it can contribute to sustainable water resources management, and what the next critical science gaps are that need to be filled. Designed to be accessible, yet comprehensive, the book is targeted at people interested in water resource management, but who may not be scientific experts in the various areas. The book takes an integrated, whole-system view, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral working and the need for practitioners and researchers to work together to co-design and co-development future projects. It combines current scientific understanding with cases studies of application in the real world and includes chapters covering topics including: · The management of agricultural water demand using soil moisture measurements; · Enhancement of flood risk management and drought decision-making; · Monitoring river water quality and restoring urban lakes; and · Improved river basin planning. While the research presented was conducted in an Indian context, the scientific developments and potential solutions outlined are applicable to other parts of the world facing similar water challenges. What News Have You Brought Us Today? (Words to Elate) by Dode Sescri 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Messengers are known to have been attacked for delivering bad news to their bosses and everyday reporters get attacked in their line of duty when gathering newsworthy pieces of information on behalf of the general public. Journalism is the only profession in the whole world where the primary job of the employees is to dig up dirt on others. Well nobody likes being publicly exposed however nice a person they are by nature, when something unfavorable about them gets aired they are naturally inclined to retaliate, which could mean causing harm to the people that dug up dirt on them in the first place. The downside of journalism is that a lot of news the reporters gather is always negative. When you turn on your TV to listen to the evening news, you are bombarded by an endless stream of bad news, so much misery and negativity is what fills the lives of these reporters. Some of those folks' lives completely changed once they became news anchors. And for this same reason, most news anchors begin their careers as very happy and cheerful fellows but unfortunately retire very dull and gloomy. The negative and heart-wrenching stories they have been airing for decades really get onto them and start to affect their way of thinking. It affects the way they see the people around them and the world in general. The first people to notice these changes are the family members of those journalists. They come to realize that something inside their loved ones started to change from the moment they became journalists, be it either field correspondents, news anchors, or investigative journalists. We are surrounded by a world filled with news of all kinds, the modern-day technologies bombard you with so much news in which you find it hard to distinguish facts from fiction. The word ''Fake News'' is not a Trump's invention. In fact many years before his coming into office, there was a growing mistrust by viewers towards the mainstream media, because some of the stories they aired turned ...

The Sustainability of Agro-Food and Natural Resource Systems in the Mediterranean Basin by Antonella Vastola 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 10 hours ago

This book is focused on the challenges to implement sustainability in diverse contexts such as agribusiness, natural resource systems and new technologies. The experiences made by the researchers of the School of Agricultural, Forestry, Food and Environmental Science (SAFE) of the University of Basilicata offer a wide and multidisciplinary approach to the identification and testing of different solutions tailored to the economic, social and environmental characteristics of the region and the surrounding areas. Basilicata's productive system is mainly based on activities related to the agricultural sector and exploitation of natural resources but it has seen, in recent years, an industrial development driven by the discovery of oil fields. SAFE research took up the challenge posed by market competition to create value through the sustainable use of renewable and non-renewable resources of the territory. Moreover, due to its unique geographical position in the middle of the Mediterranean basin, Basilicata is an excellent "open sky" laboratory for testing sustainable solutions adaptable to other Mediterranean areas. This collection of multidisciplinary case studies and research experiences from SAFE researchers and their scientific partners is a stimulating contribution to the debate on the development of sustainable techniques, methods and applications for the Mediterranean regions.

Artificiality and Sustainability in Entrepreneurship: Exploring the Unforeseen, and Paving the Way to a Sustainable Future (FGF Studies in Small ... by Richard Adams Price verified 9 hours ago

This open access edited volume explores the past, present, and future of artificiality and sustainability in entrepreneurship - the unforeseen consequences and ways to advance to a sustainable future. In particular, it connects artificiality, sustainability and entrepreneurship, intertwining artificial with the specific phenomenon of those novel digital technologies that provoke continuous and significant change in our lives and business. Unlike digital entrepreneurship research, which focuses on digital technology development and management, this book covers processes and mechanisms of sustainable adaptability of entrepreneurs, the business logic of start-ups, and the collaborative behaviours under the mass digital transformation, including the prevalence of artificial intelligence. Some of the questions that this book answers are as follows: How has entrepreneurship reacted to such challenges previously? What lessons have been learned and need to be carried forward? How can entrepreneurship and the artefacts of entrepreneurship respond to current challenges? What should be the mindset of the entrepreneur to assure sustainable adaptation? How to embrace and embed the new business logic?

Nowadays, the concept of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) is starting to replace the concept of MDGs (Millennium Developmental Goals). It is a global goal adopted by all United Nations member states. It emphasizes the idea that the development of every country can only be achieved by balancing other factors such as social, economic, and environmental sustainability. It is already clear how sustainable development works with environmental ethics and management. However, there are still issues regarding the sustainable development and human well-being. Sustainable development should focus on finding a way for society to meet their present needs for the long term without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their needs. This international seminar provides research results and literature regarding the topic of sustainable development concept, the dynamics of sustainable development and social change, and environmental sustainability. The international seminar, entitled 1st International Conference on Contemporary Sociology and Educational Transformation, listed speakers from several countries providing an overview on human and environmental resilience. This book contains a selection of papers presented at the conference.

Mixed-Criticality Industrial Wireless Networks by Xi Jin (Springer) Price verified 9 hours ago

This open access book introduces how to manage important tasks in industrial wireless networks. Important tasks must be completed on time and with guaranteed quality; that is the consensus reached by system designers and users. However, for too long, important tasks have often been given unnecessary urgency, and people intuitively believe that important tasks should be executed first so that their performance can be guaranteed. Actually, in most cases, their performance can be guaranteed even if they are executed later, and the "early" resources can be utilized for other, more urgent tasks. Therefore, confusing importance with urgency hinders the proper use of system resources. In 2007, mixed criticality was proposed to indicate that a system may contain tasks of various importance levels. Since then, system designers and users have distinguished between importance and urgency. In the industrial field, due to the harsh environment they operate in, industrial wireless networks' quality of service (QoS) has always been a bottleneck restricting their applications. Therefore, this book introduces criticality to label important data, which is then allocated more transmission resources, ensuring that important data's QoS requirements can be met to the extent possible. To help readers understand how to apply mixed-criticality data to industrial wireless networks, the content is divided into three parts. First, we introduce how to integrate the model of mixed-criticality data into industrial wireless networks. Second, we explain how to analyze the schedulability of mixed-criticality data under existing scheduling algorithms. Third, we present a range of novel scheduling algorithms for mixed-criticality data. If you want to improve the QoS of industrial wireless networks, this book is for you.

Machine Learning and Its Application to Reacting Flows: ML and Combustion (Lecture Notes in Energy Book 44) by Nedunchezhian Swaminathan (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 8 hours ago

This open access book introduces and explains machine learning (ML) algorithms and techniques developed for statistical inferences on a complex process or system and their applications to simulations of chemically reacting turbulent flows. These two fields, ML and turbulent combustion, have large body of work and knowledge on their own, and this book brings them together and explain the complexities and challenges involved in applying ML techniques to simulate and study reacting flows. This is important as to the world's total primary energy supply (TPES), since more than 90% of this supply is through combustion technologies and the non-negligible effects of combustion on environment. Although alternative technologies based on renewable energies are coming up, their shares for the TPES is are less than 5% currently and one needs a complete paradigm shift to replace combustion sources. Whether this is practical or not is entirely a different question, and an answer to this question depends on the respondent. However, a pragmatic analysis suggests that the combustion share to TPES is likely to be more than 70% even by 2070. Hence, it will be prudent to take advantage of ML techniques to improve combustion sciences and technologies so that efficient and "greener" combustion systems that are friendlier to the environment can be designed. The book covers the current state of the art in these two topics and outlines the challenges involved, merits and drawbacks of using ML for turbulent combustion simulations including avenues which can be explored to overcome the challenges. The required mathematical equations and backgrounds are discussed with ample references for readers to find further detail if they wish. This book is unique since there is not any book with similar coverage of topics, ranging from big data analysis and machine learning algorithm to their applications for combustion science and system design for energy generation.

From Digital Twins to Digital Selves and Beyond: Engineering and Social Models for a Trans-humanist World by Franz Barachini (Springer) 3.5 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

This open access book aims at deepening the understanding of the relation between cyber-physical systems (CPSs) as socio-technical systems and their digital representations with intertwined artificial intelligence (AI). The authors describe why it is crucial for digital selves to be able to develop emotional behavior and why a humanity-inspired AI is necessary so that humans and humanoids can coexist. The introductory chapter describes major milestones in computer science which form the basis for the implementation of digital twins and digital selves. The subsequent Part I then lays the foundation to develop a socio-technical understanding of the nature of digital twins as representations and trans-human development objects. Following the conceptual understanding of digital twins and how they could be engineered according to cognitive and organizational structures, Part II forms the groundwork for understanding social behavior and its modeling. It discusses various perception-based socio-emotional approaches before sketching behavior-relevant models and their simulation capabilities. In particular, it is shown how emotions can substantially influence the collective behavior of artificial actors. Part III eventually presents a symbiosis showing under which preconditions digital selves might construct and produce digital twins as integrated design elements in trans-human ecosystems. The chapters in this part are dedicated to opportunities and modes of co-creating reflective socio-trans-human systems based on digital twin models, exploring mutual control and continuous development. The final epilog is congenitally speculative in its nature by presenting thoughts on future developments of artificial life in computational substrates. The book is written for researchers and professionals in areas like cyber-physical systems, robotics, social simulation or systems engineering, interested to take a speculative look into the future of digital twins and autonomous agents. ...

This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 2.5 license. This book provides an unprecedented synthesis of the current status of scientific and management knowledge regarding global rangelands and the major challenges that confront them. It has been organized around three major themes. The first summarizes the conceptual advances that have occurred in the rangeland profession. The second addresses the implications of these conceptual advances to management and policy. The third assesses several major challenges confronting global rangelands in the 21st century. This book will compliment applied range management textbooks by describing the conceptual foundation on which the rangeland profession is based. It has been written to be accessible to a broad audience, including ecosystem managers, educators, students and policy makers. The content is founded on the collective experience, knowledge and commitment of 80 authors who have worked in rangelands throughout the world. Their collective contributions indicate that a more comprehensive framework is necessary to address the complex challenges confronting global rangelands. Rangelands represent adaptive social-ecological systems, in which societal values, organizations and capacities are of equal importance to, and interact with, those of ecological processes. A more comprehensive framework for rangeland systems may enable management agencies, and educational, research and policy making organizations to more effectively assess complex problems and develop appropriate solutions.

Microplastic in the Environment: Pattern and Process (Environmental Contamination Remediation and Management) by Michael S. Bank (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 8 hours ago

This open access book examines global plastic pollution, an issue that has become a critical societal challenge with implications for environmental and public health. This volume provides a comprehensive, holistic analysis on the plastic cycle and its subsequent effects on biota, food security, and human exposure. Importantly, global environmental change and its associated, systems-level processes, including atmospheric deposition, ecosystem complexity, UV exposure, wind patterns, water stratification, ocean circulation, etc., are all important direct and indirect factors governing the fate, transport and biotic and abiotic processing of plastic particles across ecosystem types. Furthermore, the distribution of plastic in the ocean is not independent of terrestrial ecosystem dynamics, since much of the plastic in marine ecosystems originates from land and should therefore be evaluated in the context of the larger plastic cycle. Changes in species size, distribution, habitat, and food web complexity, due to global environmental change, will likely alter trophic transfer dynamics and the ecological effects of nano- and microplastics. The fate and transport dynamics of plastic particles are influenced by their size, form, shape, polymer type, additives, and overall ecosystem conditions. In addition to the risks that plastics pose to the total environment, the potential impacts on human health and exposure routes, including seafood consumption, and air and drinking water need to be assessed in a comprehensive and quantitative manner. Here I present a holistic and interdisciplinary book volume designed to advance the understanding of plastic cycling in the environment with an emphasis on sources, fate and transport, ecotoxicology, climate change effects, food security, microbiology, sustainability, human exposure and public policy.

Handbook Of Climate Change And Agroecosystems: The Agricultural Model Intercomparison And Improvement Project (Agmip) Integrated Crop And Economic ... by Rosenzweig Cynthia & Hillel Daniel 4.2 Stars (62 Reviews)    Price verified 22 minutes ago

"Top agricultural scientists from around the world have taken up the challenge of sustainable agriculture, with the specific focus on integrating agronomic, climatological, biophysical and socio-economic perspectives and processes. Every chapter (of the Handbook) contributes to addressing the growing food-security challenges facing the world."Foreword by Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia UniversityClimate effects on agriculture are of increasing concern in both the scientific and policy communities because of the growing population and the greater uncertainty in the weather during growing seasons. Changes in production are directly linked to variations in temperature and precipitation during the growing season and often to the offseason changes in weather because of soil water storage to replenish the soil profile. This is not an isolated problem but one of worldwide interest because each country has concerns about their food security. The Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) was developed to evaluate agricultural models and intercompare their ability to predict climate impacts. In sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, South America and East Asia, AgMIP regional research teams (RRTs) are conducting integrated assessments to improve understanding of agricultural impacts of climate change (including biophysical and economic impacts) at national and regional scales. Other AgMIP initiatives include global gridded modeling, data and information technology (IT) tool development, simulation of crop pests and diseases, site-based crop-climate sensitivity studies, and aggregation and scaling.

Optimization-Based Energy Management for Multi-energy Maritime Grids (Springer Series on Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Shipbuilding and ... by Sidun Fang 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

This open access book discusses the energy management for the multi-energy maritime grid, which is the local energy network installed in harbors, ports, ships, ferries, or vessels. The grid consists of generation, storage, and critical loads. It operates either in grid-connected or in islanding modes, under the constraints of both power system and transportation system. With full electrification, the future maritime grids, such as all-electric ships and seaport microgrids, will become "maritime multi-energy system" with the involvement of multiple energy, i.e., electrical power, fossil fuel, and heating/cooling power. With various practical cases, this book provides a cross-disciplinary view of the green and sustainable shipping via the energy management of maritime grids. In this book, the concepts and definitions of the multi-energy maritime grids are given after a comprehensive literature survey, and then the global and regional energy efficiency policies for the maritime transportation are illustrated. After that, it presents energy management methods under different scenarios for all-electric ships and electrified ports. At last, the future research roadmap are overviewed. The book is intended for graduate students, researchers, and professionals who are interested in the energy management of maritime transportation.

AVENUE21. Connected and Automated Driving: Prospects for Urban Europe by Mathias Mitteregger (Springer Vieweg) Price verified 8 hours ago

This open access publication examines the impact of connected and automated vehicles on the European city and the conditions that can enable this technology to make a positive contribution to urban development. The authors argue for two theses that have thus far received little attention in scientific discourse: as connected and automated vehicles will not be ready for use in all parts of the city for a long time, previously assumed effects - from traffic safety to traffic performance as well as spatial effects - will need to be re-evaluated. To ensure this technology has a positive impact on the mobility of the future, transport and settlement policy regulations must be adapted and further developed. Established territorial, institutional and organizational boundaries must be investigated and challenged quickly. Despite - or, indeed, because of - the many uncertainties, we find ourselves at the beginning of a new design phase, not only in terms of technology development, but also regarding politics, urban planning, administration and civil society.

Energy-Efficient and Semi-automated Truck Platooning: Research and Evaluation (Lecture Notes in Intelligent Transportation and Infrastructure) by Alexander Schirrer Price verified 32 minutes ago

This open access book presents research and evaluation results of the Austrian flagship project "Connecting Austria," illustrating the wide range of research needs and questions that arise when semi-automated truck platooning is deployed in Austria. The work presented is introduced in the context of work in similar research areas around the world. This interdisciplinary research effort considers aspects of engineering, road-vehicle and infrastructure technologies, traffic management and optimization, traffic safety, and psychology, as well as potential economic effects. The book's broad perspective means that readers interested in current and state-of-the-art methods and techniques for the realization of semi-automated driving and with either an engineering background or with a less technical background gain a comprehensive picture of this important subject. The contributors address many questions such as: • Which maneuvers does a platoon typically have to carry out, and how? • How can platoons be integrated seamlessly in the traffic flow without becoming an obstacle to individual road users? • What trade-offs between system information (sensors, communication effort, etc.) and efficiency are realistic? • How can intersections be passed by a platoon in an intelligent fashion? Consideration of diverse disciplines and highlighting their meaning for semi-automated truck platooning, together with the highlighting of necessary research and evaluation patterns to address such a broad task scientifically, makes Energy-Efficient and Semi-automated Truck Platooning a unique contribution with methods that can be extended and adapted beyond the geographical area of the research reported.

Regularized System Identification: Learning Dynamic Models from Data (Communications and Control Engineering) by Gianluigi Pillonetto (Springer) 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

This open access book provides a comprehensive treatment of recent developments in kernel-based identification that are of interest to anyone engaged in learning dynamic systems from data. The reader is led step by step into understanding of a novel paradigm that leverages the power of machine learning without losing sight of the system-theoretical principles of black-box identification. The authors' reformulation of the identification problem in the light of regularization theory not only offers new insight on classical questions, but paves the way to new and powerful algorithms for a variety of linear and nonlinear problems. Regression methods such as regularization networks and support vector machines are the basis of techniques that extend the function-estimation problem to the estimation of dynamic models. Many examples, also from real-world applications, illustrate the comparative advantages of the new nonparametric approach with respect to classic parametric prediction error methods. The challenges it addresses lie at the intersection of several disciplines so Regularized System Identification will be of interest to a variety of researchers and practitioners in the areas of control systems, machine learning, statistics, and data science. This is an open access book.

The Sanitation Triangle: Socio-Culture, Health and Materials (Global Environmental Studies) by Taro Yamauchi (Springer) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 4 hours ago

This open access book deals with global sanitation, where SDG 6.2 sets a target of enabling access to sanitation services for all, but has not yet been achieved in low- and middle-income countries. The transition from the United Nations MDGs to the SDGs requires more consideration based on the socio-cultural aspects of global sanitation. In other words, equitable sanitation for those in vulnerable situations could be based on socio-cultural contexts. Sanitation is a system that comprises not only a latrine but also the works for the treatment and disposal of human waste. Sanitation systems do not function by themselves but have significance only through social management. The process of decision-making also largely depends on socio-cultural conditions, and the importance of sanitation needs to be socially acknowledged. The health benefits of sanitation improvement -- among the significant contributions of sanitation -- also need to be considered in the socio-cultural milieu. Further, the social-culture itself is affected, and potentially even created, by sanitation. In this context, more progress on the improvement of sanitation requires a more holistic approach across disciplines. In this book, we present the concept of the Sanitation Triangle, which considers the interconnections of health, materials, and socio-culture in sanitation, as a holistic approach, and the case studies based on the Sanitation Triangle by diverse disciplines such as Cultural Anthropology, Development Studies, Health Sciences, Engineering, and Science Communication. By the deep theoretical examinations and inter-dialogues between the different disciplines, this book explores the potentialities of inter-disciplinary studies on global sanitation.

An Introduction to the Mechanics of Incompressible Fluids by Michel O. Deville (Springer) 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

This open access book allows the reader to grasp the main bulk of fluid flow problems at a brisk pace. Starting with the basic concepts of conservation laws developed using continuum mechanics, the incompressibility of a fluid is explained and modeled, leading to the famous Navier-Stokes equation that governs the dynamics of fluids. Some exact solutions for transient and steady-state cases in Cartesian and axisymmetric coordinates are proposed. A particular set of examples is associated with creeping or Stokes flows, where viscosity is the dominant physical phenomenon. Irrotational flows are treated by introducing complex variables. The use of the conformal mapping and the Joukowski transformation allows the treatment of the flow around an airfoil. The boundary layer theory corrects the earlier approach with the Prandtl equations, their solution for the case of a flat plate, and the von Karman integral equation. The instability of fluid flows is studied for parallel flows using the Orr-Sommerfeld equation. The stability of a circular Couette flow is also described. The book ends with the modeling of turbulence by the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and large-eddy simulations. Each chapter includes useful practice problems and their solutions. The book is useful for engineers, physicists, and scientists interested in the fascinating field of fluid mechanics.

The Digital Shopfloor- Industrial Automation in the Industry 4.0 Era: Performance Analysis and Applications by John Soldatos 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 4 hours ago

In today's competitive global environment, manufacturers are offered with unprecedented opportunities to build hyper-efficient and highly flexible plants, towards meeting variable market demand, while at the same time supporting new production models such as make-to-order (MTO), configure-to-order (CTO) and engineer-to-order (ETO). During the last couple of years, the digital transformation of industrial processes is propelled by the emergence and rise of the fourth industrial revolution (Industry4.0). The latter is based on the extensive deployment of Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies in the manufacturing shopfloor, as well as on the seamless and timely exchange of digital information across supply chain participants. The benefits of Industry 4.0 have been already proven in the scope of pilot and production deployments in a number of different use cases including flexibility in automation, predictive maintenance, zero defect manufacturing and more. Despite early implementations and proof-of-concepts, CPPS/IIoT deployments are still in their infancy for a number of reasons, including:? Manufacturers' poor awareness about digital manufacturing solutions and their business value potential, as well as the lack of relevant internal CPPS/IIoT knowledge.? The high costs that are associated with the deployment, maintenance and operation of CPPS systems in the manufacturing shopfloors, which are particularly challenging in the case of SME (Small Medium Enterprises) manufacturers that lack the equity capital needed to invest in Industry 4.0.? The time needed to implement CPPS/IIoT and the lack of a smooth and proven migration path from existing OT solutions.? The uncertainty over the business benefits and impacts of IIoT and CPPS technologies, including the lack of proven methods for the techno-economic evaluation of Industry4.0 systems. ? Manufacturers' increased reliance on external integrators, consultants and ...
